MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 1997 VOYAGER UP A GRAVEL DRIVEWAY ABOUT 5-10 MPH. BOTH THE DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS INADVERTENTLY DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO COLLISION OF ANY KIND. MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER BOTH SUFFERED BRUISING AND FACIAL ABRASIONS FROM THE AIR BAGS. IT IS NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE STATING IT IS A MECHANICAL FAILURE. I FEEL THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD COVERED BY CHRYSLER FOR ALL PARTS AND SERVICE. *NM

AT THE COMPLETION OF THE WORK, THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS OK AND THEY DID NOT REPLACE IT. ACCORDING TO THE INFORMATION GIVEN TO ME BY A LOCAL CHYRSLER DEALER, THIS PROBLEM IS TYPICALLY CAUSED BY A FAULTY CLOCK SPRING, AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY WHEN THE WARNING LIGHT IS ON. THE CLOCK SPRING WAS REPLACED ONCE UNDER WARRANTY ON JUNE 6, 1997, AT 7922 MILES. MY COMPLAINT AT THAT TIME WAS A CRUNCHING SOUND THAT CAME FROM THE AREA OF THE STEERING COLUMN, WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED IN EITHER DIRECTION.

THE DASHBOARD AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT BEGAN TO STAY ON CONTINUALLY. UNDER WARRANTY, IN MARCH OF 2000, THE DEALER REPLACED BOTH THE AIRBAG AND THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY. THE PROBLEM APPEARED TO BE FIXED. HOWEVER, I BEGAN NOTING SEVERAL MONTHS AGO THAT THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WILL COME ON AT RANDOM TIMES. I SPOKE TO THE DEALER'S SERVICE REP AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE CLOCKSPRING WAS AGAIN DEFECTIVE. I HAVE LEARNED THAT CHRYSLER HAS REPLACED SOME 124,000 OF THESE AT CUSTOMER COST. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE AND CHRYSLER NEEDS TO DO A RECALL ASAP. DON'T LET THEM STALL FOR YEARS AS YOU LET THEM DO WITH THE ENGINE FIRE RECALL. I JUST HAD THAT DONE, SOME 2 AND A HALF YEARS AFTER THE PROBLEM WAS APPARENT.*AK
