Rear camera not available, even after latestsoftware upgrade.
Malfunction: Rear cross traffic alert, due to delayed processing by the underpowered IHU (so really likely an IHU issue) Safety put at risk: Alert received after cross traffic had already passed (due to said delayed processing) Reproduced by dealer: No, it's random and seems related to time since IHU reboot Inspection: No Warnings prior to failure: Nope, other than the IHU being more sluggish than usual Has happened on multiple dates, incident date is an approximate most recent. This has happened with the current 3.6.4 software.
The backup camera constantly fails, for 10+ minutes at a time and will just state that it is unavailable. This is quite challenging in urban environments. Polestar said it was fixed through a software update but the issue continues to come up frequently without warning. Yesterday it stayed unavailable/broken for 20+ minutes in the rain while I was driving with my kids which made it very hard to see/park.
Reversing camera is unusable. When shifting into reverse the reverse camera can black out or freeze. More commonly after the last software update the reverse camera has been lagging about a second behind the actual car location leading to severe disorientation.
I am reporting an ongoing safety-related malfunction with the rear camera and infotainment system that occurs several times per week and has been reported to Polestar previously, without resolution. When shifting into reverse, the rear camera consistently fails to display. The screen shows a “Rear camera unavailable” message, followed by a blank screen. Attempting to resolve the issue by shifting between drive and reverse, switching screens, or restarting the vehicle does not restore camera functionality. In multiple cases, parking the vehicle, exiting, and attempting again still results in a non-functional camera. After receiving the most recent recall update, the problem worsened significantly. Prior to the update, the issue occurred intermittently. Since the update, the rear camera fails to display approximately 95% of the time when shifting into reverse. This problem presents a substantial safety hazard by removing rear visibility during normal operation and parking maneuvers. Software updates have made no improvement, and the malfunction remains unresolved. I request investigation and remediation, as this is a persistent safety defect affecting normal vehicle operation.
Backup camera only works about 50% of the time. It frequently gives “camera unavailable” error
Rear view camera lags badly and will freeze when putting the car into reverse. Almost backed into a pole due to lag of the camera
Backup camera becomes not available when backing up multiple times.
The back up camera doesn’t work even after there was already a safety recall. It Constantly crashes and says “camera not available. The issue has been happening for months. Polestar has failed to address the issue even though they claimed that an earlier software update should have fixed it.
When putting the car in reverse, the rear view camera often fails to display, instead popping up a message reading "backup camera temporarily unavailable." This happens half or more of the time, and it has continued to occur despite installation of the latest version of the car's operating system (3.6.4) that was pushed to resolve the most recent recall for this problem.
Rear camera malfunction. When putting car into reverse, the rear camera screen showed an error saying the camera was unavailable. Putting the car back into drive and then reverse again did not resolve the issue. Changing screens then back to the camera did not resolve the issue. Parking, leaving the vehicle then trying again did not resolve the issue. Issue was only resolved with a system restart.
My car's cameras are now unavailable. Whenever I enter Reverse gear or maneuver close to an obstacle, the camera screen appears with the message "Camera temporarily not available." This condition was persistent tonight throughout a trip where I parked three times, and each time the camera failed to work. I need to reverse into my parking space at home due to its location on a busy road, and this was not possible to do safely tonight. Backing out onto the road later will be even less safe.
Back up camera failed when trying to back out front parking
Rear backup and 360 camera state system is unavailable.
Chinese made EV that does not comply with US standards of having a functioning backup camera. Every day my backup camera has been failing with the same error 'Camera is temporary unavailable'. This is even after the latest software update that was supposed to fix the issue.
Chinese made EV that does not comply with US standards of having a functioning backup camera. Every day my backup camera has been failing with the same error 'Camera is temporary unavailable'. This is even after the latest software update that was supposed to fix the issue.
Rear camera not available message and blank screen whenever car is placed in reverse. Update to software made no improvement.
COMPONENT: BACK OVER PROTECTION When placing car in reverse, rear camera comes on slowly. Intermittently, the rear camera will go out while backing up and the message “Rear camera temporarily unavailable “ appears on the infotainment screen. Update to 3.6.4 has not rectified the problem.
Rear camera routinely does not work and says unavailable when reversing.
When placing car in reverse rear camera comes on slowly, then often will go out while backing up and the words “rear camera temporarily unavailable “ will appear on the infotainment screen. The car was recalled as a result of this issue and the latest software update— 3.6.4– was supposed to correct the problem . I had the software installed by the dealer on September 4, 2025. Unfortunately, the issue continues on a daily basis even after this software was installed.
After updating the vehicle software per NHTSA Recall No. 25V-280, the rear camera system is still not stable. There have been several instances of the camera becoming "unavailable" since performing the software update meant to make the camera more reliable. Sometimes the camera will fail while the vehicle is in motion mid backing up. Additionally, the computing resources that were diverted from the infotainment system to "fix" the camera issue have made the infotainment system less reliable. This now results in multiple distractions while driving throughout the day to assess why the infotainment system is not operating as expected when input is provided. Severe delays with mapping. Pressing an app, but the app may or may not load which causes the driver to divert attention to the infotainment to reselect the app or confirm if the system is hung-up and requires a re-start. Additionally, there has been an increase in the speakers not working since the last software update. The speakers are not only for the stereo but provide turn signal indication and safety warnings for breaking and obstructions. There is no warning that the speakers are not working so sometimes one begins driving and only when a warning should be emitted or turn indication does the driver realize there is no audio. The driver must then reset the infotainment system to try and regain audio (my record is 9 restarts before the speakers begin working again). This is very dangerous to have to pull over to reset or be distracted while resetting the infotainment system (which takes over a minute for each start and requires pressing on the screen for approx. 20-30 seconds). This update did not improve the camera function and has made for many other dangerous compromises on the infotainment system which were not there previous to this update.
Often when putting the camera in reverse, a black screen appears saying the camera is unavailable. This has gotten progressively worse the longer I've owned the car. This increases the risk of hitting someone or something. Polestar has tried to fix this by software updates. No. Camera feed starts to lag first.
Reverse camera turns off while reversing if a phone is plugged in for android auto
The backup camera fails to load. A black screen with the error message "Camera is temporarily unavailable" displays. This error occurs regularly. Turning the camera off and on again, will sometimes rectify the issue, but not always. This error can/has occurred at anypoint While my car was in reverse gear. Most frequently the error occurs from the very beginning of trying to use it. However it has failed while I was in motion trying to use it. This report is being filed because of that latter type of failure. There was a recall notice for this exact issue. Polestar issued a software update (v3.6.4) to fix this issue. However, in my experience, the error has occurred more frequently after the software update.
ALL CAMERAS HAVE STOPPED WORKING. I ALSO CANNOT ACCESS THE REAR-AUTO BARKE CONTROL. I ALREADY REPORTED THIS TO NHTSA. THE DEALERSHIP LEFT ME 1 MESSAGE TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT, AND HENCE IGNORED MY RETURN PHONE CALLS.
The rear view camera (backup camera) does not work consistently. It often will not activate at all, and often the screen goes black in the middle of a reverse maneuver. I have had the car in for service multiple times, and Polestar has been unable to fix this issue. They say that it a known issue with no fix. This is a safety issue, especially when the reverse camera stops working as you are backing up.
Even after most recent software update to address rear view camera issue, the Camera Temporarily Unavailable issue persists…. presenting an ongoing hazard to persons and property.
Back up camera fails to start, limited rear view visibility. On latest software version, this has been consistently happening for the past year.
The contact owns a 2022 Polestar Polestar 2. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message “Back Over Prevention Camera Unavailable” was displayed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was recently taken to the dealer, and an unknown recall repair was performed. The contact stated that the repair was a software update; however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.
Mileage: 21,000
Back-up camera does not work reliably, even after the most recent software update. It will occasionally stutter, and sometimes show "camera is temporarily unavailable" while backing up.
The reverse camera goes black and shows camera not available daily.
Back over prevention. Shifted into R while in traffic to move back a bit, camera hangs for a bit then shows “camera temporarily unavailable” Vehicle is remedied by the recent 25V280000 recall via a OTA software update
Rear backup camera frequently says "camera not available" and does not work even after most recent software update.
The backup camera was unavailable when putting the car in reverse. I could not rely on the camera to show me what may be behind my car. No. No. No warning lamps, I have heard others report this issue but never experienced it myself. I have the latest update installed on my car that was supposed to fix this issue for others as well. Until today I had never encountered this, but after I decided to enable the digital key via the polestar app my first drive after returning to the car I experienced this issue. There may be a link to the digital key and the backup camera being unavailable. I may need to disable the digital key to avoid running into the camera issue.
Received a recall notice Recall 25V-280 related to the backup camera and rear visibility. On July 9, 2025 I took the vehicle to the Polestar repair facility in Westport CT for the identified software update. Before the the recall fix I received the "camera is temporarily unavailable" message approximately every one in ten backups and I could restore the camera view manually (push camera on main screen). After the repair the "camera is temporarily unavailable" appears more than half time and I cannot restore the camera manually. The repair has made the problem much worse.
Once in a while, seemingly random, the backup camera will report that it’s unavailable.
Even after 2 past recalls attempting to fix the backup camera, the camera screen keeps going black and says “Camera is temporarily unavailable.”
Rear view camera does not turn on while backing up
When putting the car into reverse, the camera would not display. The entire screen appeared frozen and no other buttons would operate.
The rearview camera often does not turn on while in reverse. The vehicle received the software update to fix this issue due to the recall. But the issue persists after the update was installed. The software patch did not solve this problem.
Backup camera refuses to engage when shifted into reverse approximately 10-15% of time. Display and controls seem laggy and delayed. Previously upgraded to car software to v3.6.4 about 4 weeks ago.
Rear backup camera stop working in the middle of reversing. It was supposed to be fixed with the latest update, but in continuous to happen..
Car received over the air update a week ago. Software version is now 3.6.4. Assumed it was to address NHTSA Recall RP1016 - Rear Backup Camera. Update has not addressed recall issues. Backup image still lags and images flicker at times when car is first put into reverse. Yesterday I put it into reverse and no image appeared at all. Instead got warning message: "Camera temporarily unavailable". Have had backup camera fail this way several time over past year. With current update camera actually seems to malfunction more often than it did before the update. This is a serious safety hazard because rear visibility is compromised by car's design. (One factor is large rear seat headrests cannot be removed.) Camera is always needed when backing up. Have not reported problem to Polestar.
Although software update recently performed, issue with rear view camera activation continues. Given significant infotainment lag following update, I suspect the underlying issue is underpowered hardware. Polestar has been trying to address issue via software, they have not been successful.
My rearview camera and infortainment system is having errors daily. Polestar claims OTA update will fix issue but im not receiving it to my car. Ive tried resetting system and still a major problem.
I continue to see the message that the camera is not available when backing and or parking. The earlier recall and software fix has failed. Running version 3.6.4
Despite receiving the recent software update intended to fix ongoing issues with the backup camera, the center stack remains woefully inadequate, hardware-wise, to properly handle all of the vehicle data. Sometimes now, the reverse camera is fine until halfway during my backup procedure when I'm halfway out in traffic and it suddenly shuts off. If anything the unpredictable nature of the failures makes this a worse problem than before. Before the software update I could at least sit in the car for a minute or two and then try backing up and it would work most of the time. Now, it works a good amount of the time but randomly fails.
Rear Camera Not working properly. Cant back up safely.
There was an earlier recall for the reverse camera failing while vehicle is put in reverse, which was fixed by a recent software update. While the frequency of the issue is reduced after update, it is still occurring randomly when car is reversing out of garage, instead of rear camera view, vehicle screen displays "Camera Temporarily Unavailable" message.
I'm still seeing a "Camera is temporarily unavailable" when reversing or driving forward using the 360 camera. I have downloaded the supposed fix of version "3.6.4" but it did absolutely nothing to alleviate this issue. Please make Polestar fix this issue, it's getting ridiculous how they keep failing to fix this.
The back up camera frequently goes unavailable. It happens probably 50% or more of the times I go into reverse. It sometimes happens as I'm actively backing up.
Frequently, when putting the car in reverse, the rear view camera is unavailable. In some instances it simply does not work. In other instances it will suddenly stop working while reversing, which is more dangerous. And worst of all, it will sometimes provide a static image while reversing such that it initially appears to be working but on further inspection the image is not a live view. This issue has gotten worse on 3.6.4.
Recent software update has not resolved recall 25V280000 that referred to rear camera not working properly in reverse. Problems have persisted (Camera Unavailable) while backing up.
Since purchasing the car, there have been constant issues and failure with the backup camera. Numerous software updates (including to P3.6.3) have NOT rectified the issue.
Rear-view camera sometimes does not work at all or is delayed when vehicle is put in reverse.
the rear camera is constantly unavailable. the latest software update (which was a recall) has made the reversing camera insurmountably worse. and when the “camera unavailable” glitch comes up, neither the collision avoidance or parking sensors work either. it’s time for Polestar to stop being cheap and offer processor upgrades to the older cars, which they provide to the newer cars that don’t have the problem anymore.
Rear view camera display often glitches out. Sometimes even showing a 360 view instead of the backup camera. This is gotten WORSE since the last software upgrade, 3.6.4. This has happened across many days and instances. Maybe unrelated, sometimes I get random camera views pop up into my tablet when I’m driving normally down the road. Super weird
When put in reverse the camera says not available even after the latest update. It impairs visibility when baking up
Rear camera displays unavailable when reversing intermittently despite software revision attempts to remedy.
The review camera when placing the car in reverse intermittently does not work, even after the latest recall was completed.
My vehicle is currently on software version 3.6.4. I recieved a recall notice for the "camera is temporarily unavailable" on my vehicle NHTSA Recall 25V-280. The car still has the same error, and ~30% of the time, the rear view camera is not functional. There were no incidents or injuries reported, but the car has very minimal rear visiblity, and I live in a highly populated community, and it poses a risk since I have VERY minimal visibility while backing out of my garage. I'm including a photo of this, I have also notified Polestar (Steve Degrazio) head of quality at polestar NA
Rear view camera does not work. Even after the “safety recall” update it is actually worse. Side view cameras never open up when they fold in after parking snd rentry to drive
The rear view backup camera fails to display often. It happens intermittently, and probably is related to the buggy car software. It needs to be fixed. The system reports “camera is temporarily unavailable” while reversing.
For reference, I have the 3.6.4 software update. The backup camera and 360 camera frequently flicker, so visibility is poor and limited. In addition, there are instances where it still says "Camera is temporarily unavailable" leading to complete failure of the backup camera. The most common time for these errors to occur is after accessing the car after it has been locked for a (longer) period of time. There are no other warnings or errors on the infotainment that indicate this issue other than the flickering and unavailable message.
Rear camera unavailable error when putting car in reverse. I installed the new software from the recall 3.6.4 but still continue to have this issue.
I received the latest software update 3.6.4 but I still have the issue with the backup camera becoming unavailable and not showing behind the car. It is not as frequent, but it is still occurring.
The backup camera constantly fails and malfunctions. When I put the car into reverse gear, the screen that's supposed to show the backup camera footage just displays "Camera is temporarily unavailable" on a black screen (see pictures I uploaded). It is not a one-time occurrence and happens repeatedly, especially when just starting the car. I looked online and many polestar 2 users have the same issue with the backup camera even after installing the latest software (which I did as well and did nothing to fix the backup camera issue). It is likely an infotainment system issue with the processor being too slow which seriously needs to be fixed. Yes, the car is available for inspection upon request. It clearly puts my safety and others at risk since I don't have backup camera visibility when backing up. This is especially dangerous when I try to back out in parking lots with pedestrians walking because I cannot see them without the backup camera. No, the vehicle has not been inspected There were no warning lights, just the black screen showing "Camera is temporarily unavailable"
On [XXX], the infotainment head unit (IHU) crashed and rebooted during driving. As a result of the IHU crashing, the rear and surrounding camera visualizations were unavailable for several minutes, limiting my view. The vehicle was on software version 3.6.4, the latest available version. As a result, the vehicle may have a non-compliance with the requirements of both the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 111 in the US and the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) 111 in Canada. This vehicle is available for inspection upon request and has a service request booked in the coming weeks for an unrelated issue. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone in regards to this issue. No warnings, messages, or other symptoms were present prior to failure. This is the second time this has occurred, with the first time being months ago on a prior software version. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Rear camera does not engage reliably in the first 10 minutes of operation of the car. Frequently glitches and displays “Camera Temporarily Unavailable.” This has not been remedied by either of the two previous recalls and software version 3.6.4 is currently installed on my vehicle. The update does not seem to have made a substantial difference in the frequency of the intermittent camera problem.
Since release, the Polestar two has had subpar backup camera experiences. It glitches, stops working, is slow to come up. Polestar has issued 2 safety recalls about it and neither one has given me a fully working backup camera. I have the model year 2022 Polestar 2, which I got in September of 2022 and this has been an ongoing issue. The software recall released in June of 2025 did not fix anything for me. It might be slightly better, meaning my camera now works 60 to 70% of the time. This is a problem with this car as the rear visibility is awful.
Reverse camera does not always come on or lag when shifting to reverse. The car still has not received the update from polestar that was supposed to have fixed the issue
Backup camera states unavailable when putting car into reverse. Gives clear warning message and a black screen. Potential risk of safety to myself, other motorists, and pedestrians.
The rear view reverse gear camera does not work consistently. A “camera unavailable “ message appears on the screen creating the need to stop reversing. This problem continues even after the software update to 3.6.4, which was supposed to fix the issue.
I am on car software version 3.6.4 which is above the recall notice. The notice says if you are on this software no recall is needed, but my rear backup camera still fail to come on all the time....
Backup camera continues to have problems and will not display any image. Screen will display “camera temporarily unavailable”. There was a recall for this already and OTA update 3.6.4 was supposed to be the fix. The problem remains after that update was successfully installed and refreshed. It is the same issue as happened previously. Backup camera view will stutter and freeze and then go out completely and display the camera unavailable text.
After applying manufacturer’s recall fix for “rear camera temporarily unavailable,” rear backup camera continues to be inoperative at times. Update 3.6.4 was applied by the dealer. This is most recent upgrade that was to correct this problem. Error has occurred several times but intermittent since update.
Even on latest software update rear view camera is unreliable. Flickers and says “Camera is unavailable”
Reverse camera does not or intermittently displays video and is unreliable. This makes reversing unsafe, since obstacles like people can not be seen. This problem is known and widepread among owners of this car. This component has be recalled as a software update, however that has been unaffective.
My car received the update Polestar said they would push out (3.6.4 is what I’m currently running) and I’m still having issues with the rear camera not working, and to be honest it’s like it’s actually gotten worse. I’m also having issues with other parts of the software of my car that I wasn’t before that’s requiring me to reboot the infotainment system more than I was before. It’s almost like the car doesn’t have enough processing power for the system to work effectively now. I called Polestar and they said I could book a service appointment and take it in which would be fine if the nearest service center wasn’t two and a half to three hours away from where I live (I live in Oklahoma City and the closest place I can take it to is to the Volvo dealership in Grapevine outside of Dallas as the Volvo dealership in Oklahoma City refuses to service it or even look at it even though both Volvo and Polestar use the same program VIDA for anything with their vehicles). They offered to come get my car and tow it down to Grapevine free of charge, but refused to give me a loaner vehicle while they had my vehicle, and that isn’t something I can do (as I drive at least 50 miles everyday to get to and for work). It’s very disappointing that a company that is part of another company that prides itself on safety and invented the seatbelt cannot get anything software related to work correctly.
BACKUP CAMERA SHOWS CAMERA NOT AVALABLE EVEN AFTER THE LATEST UPDATE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX IT
The backup camera connected to the infotainment system only works sporadically. 70% of the time it works, 25% of the time it will come back and State that the backup camera is not available, and the other 5% of the time the screen just keeps glitching. After almost a year of this issue there was a recall to correct the problem. The OTA update was applied a few weeks ago but the problem has not been corrected and still persist. This creates a huge safety risk as sometimes the screen just freezes. It is not reliable to tell if there is anything behind me for these reasons.
Rear view camera flickers and cuts out when in reverse.
Occasionally receive “Camera Not Available” screen when entering Reverse. Also occasional lag/stutter with backup camera. This is after addressing multiple recalls for this issue.
Following software update noted in recall information, backup camera still fails to display when vehicle is put into reverse regularly. Vehicle displays "camera not available" or displays 360 camera view rather than rear more often than not when starting reverse from park.
Despite getting the new software update intended to resolve the prior recall, my car will still consistently fail to show the rear camera view while backing up. Unfortunately Polestar did not resolve this issue with the 3.6.4 software update.
Multiple instances of the rear camera not appearing or improperly displaying the 360° instead of reverse camera when backing up or when the car is placed into reverse
My vehicle's rear view camera often fails to activate when I shift the transmission into reverse. Instead of displaying the camera feed, the infotainment system presents a persistent message stating, 'Camera is temporarily unavailable.' This issue significantly impairs my ability to safely maneuver the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of collision with objects or pedestrians due to the lack of visual information typically provided by the rear view camera system. This occurred after the second recall was performed for the issue.
My Polestar 2 was updated to software version 3.6.4 to address an issue with the rear view camera being unavailable when moving in reverse. This was supposed to solve a Safety Recall Notice, but today was the third time since the software update was applied that I received the Camera Unavailable error. This is in response to NHTSA RECALL 25V-280.
My vehicle's rearview camera occasionally fails to activate when I shift the transmission into reverse. Instead of displaying the camera feed, the infotainment system presents a persistent message stating, 'Camera is temporarily unavailable.' This issue significantly impairs my ability to safely maneuver the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of collision with objects or pedestrians due to the lack of visual information typically provided by the rearview camera system. This occurred after the second recall was performed for the issue.
The backup camera is often reported as being temporarily unavailable. This has been an ongoing issue with the software and the latest software update was supposed to fix it and it is still occurring on my vehicle regularly.
Rear camera fails to load even after recall software update. If loads sometimes will flicker/stutter/freeze
Even after updating to 3.6.4 software, the rear view camera remains unreliable. Currently the cameras are not working at all, any of them. Polestar will tell us to restart the UI and that may or may not fix the issue.
The rear view camera issue associated with Manufacturer Recall Number RP1056 has not been resolved after the update associated with this recall. My camera still states unavailable when putting the car into reverse. I am currently on polestar software 3.6.4
This is regarding the backup camera recall. I have updated to software P3.6.4 (the recall notice says P3.6.3 and above aren’t affected). However, the backup camera is still stuttering with extremely low frame rates and second-long lags, then switching to a black screen saying “camera unavailable”. This occurred two of the three times i have driven the car since the software update.
The reverse camera is still problematic even after software update that was supposed to fix it. “Camera unavailable” message consistently shows up while reversing. The infotainment system is dangerously slow, it can take multiple seconds between tap pin and the screen responding. This is insane for a car whose whole controls are in the screen and leads to distractions.
software update 3.6.4 did not fix backup camera issue, still shows as "not available"
Rear View Camera only works intermittently. Often times the display will report "Camera Not Available" when reversing. In addition, when the camera does work, the video will often freeze briefly or become choppy. The most recent recall software update which was supposed to correct this issue (3.6.4) has already been installed and the problem remains a regular occurrence.
When I put the car in reverse, I occasionally get a blank backup camera screen with an error message that reads, "backup camera temporarily unavailable." This is a longstanding issue that Polestar has attempted to fix through software updates, including the recent 3.6.4 OTA software update offered as the technical fix for a recall specifically for this issue. My car received that software update about two weeks ago, and the unavailable camera problem has persisted.
Monday, June 30, 2025 at 12:58 Eastern, I backed out of my garage and my car initially showed the rear-view backup camera. Within about 5 seconds, while I was still backing out, the camera cut out completely and displayed a message about the camera being temporarily unavailable. I waited several seconds - maybe 10 - and the camera came back on. This happens a fair amount. I've received Polestar's 3.6.4 update that supposedly has a fix. Unfortunately, the new update leads to this problem occurring 90% of the time versus the previous 15%.
When in reverse, the center display should display a live feed of the rear view camera, but the rear view camera very often displays a "Camera is temporarily unavailable" screen, which is an extremely dangerous failure while in reverse.
Even after the most recent software update to 3.6.4 the ream camera only works about 60 percent of the time.
I recently received the recall notice for my 2022 Polestar 2, regarding the defective/intermittently inoperative rear/back up camera. I updated the software to version 3.6.4, which according to the recall notice, should have corrected the default, but I continue to get the "Camera Temporarily Unavailable" notice when reversing.
After updating the 2022 Polestar to to the latest version (3.6.4), I thought the previous issue with the rear camera being unavailable while reversing would be fixed. This is not the case. I still experience the "rear camera not available" screen while I'm actively backing out of parking lots in malls. This is still a safety hazard for me and others around me. The update did not fix the rear camera issue. The center screen fills with a "Rear camera not available" text when I shift the car to Reverse gear.
The rare backup camera sometimes doesn’t come on when the car is put into Reverse. I am on latest software version 3.6.4
Rear backup camera regularly does not display on center console while backing up, flickering between showing the feed, freezing on a still image and showing a black screen with a message stating “camera not available”. This is a known issue that Polestar has attempted to fix multiple times with a software update. I have updated to the most recent software version 3.6.4, which was released in part with the intent to fix this camera issue, and the issue persists.
OTA update was installed to fix backup camera issue, however this is still unresolved: Photos attached
During backup the car, most of the time me the camera is temporarily unavailable.
My vehicle was recalled (NHTSA Recall No. 25V-280) and the software was updated. This is meant to fix issues with the rear camera not activating after the car is put in reverse. However this did not fix the issue. When I start the car in the morning and put it in reverse, the center console displays the message "Camera is temporarily unavailable" and the camera does not activate. This occurs about 40% of the time. Many other owners are still experiencing this issue after updating the vehicle. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The backup camera fails to work at times with a message: “camera is unavailable” This was supposed to be fixed in the 3.6.4 update that Polestar put out but the problem continues to persist
The backup camera has always been buggy but since the recent software update 3.6.4 which was supposed to fix those issues, it often doesn’t even work at all resulting in a “camera not available” error
I recently got the 3.6.4 software update that was supposed to fix the recall for the constant rear backup camera issues in the Polestar 2. The problem seems to have gotten even worse after the software update. I often have to wait 1-2 minutes while sitting in reverse for the camera to sometimes come on. If it does come on, I’ll start backing up, and halfway through the maneuver, the screen often goes black and says the backup cam isn’t available at this time. If I wait maybe 30 seconds, it sometimes comes back, but I can’t just stop in the middle of the street when I’m backing out of my driveway or a parking spot. The rear windshield already has very poor visibility, so I heavily rely on the backup cam to know what’s around me. Secondarily, the audio drivers seem to constantly malfunction, so I can’t hear any beeping that might come from the rear auto-brake/sensor functionality. Can’t even hear my turn signals when the audio is malfunctioning, too. No collisions or physical damage, but backing up feels like a significant safety hazard. My alley has small kids, and I need to be able to see behind my car. When the camera just freezes midway through backing out of my driveway, I’m kind of stuck. Polestar has released software updates to “fix” this twice, and it has only remained the same or gotten worse. I really think they need to do a hardware update on the central panel, as it seemingly can’t handle many functions that need some CPU power (e.g. it can also take upwards of a minute to load the map app)
This exists after the second recall fix for this issue was performed by a service center.
I recently received the new update (version 3.6.4) for our Polestar 2 that was supposed to fix the issue (recall 25V-280) of the rear view camera not working. It did not fix the issue in the safety recall. Since the update the rear view camera works even less often than it did before. I either get a black screen that says the camera is temporarily unavailable, or it displays the 360 view. It happens every day more often than not.
I just got the 3.6.4 update a couple weeks before receiving the recall letter from Polestar. To my surprise, the car is presenting the “Camera unavailable” way more often after the “fix”. Getting in my car and backing up, I get this error about 3 out of 5 drives, which is super dangerous. I have a toddler at home and feel I’m entitled to have a working backup camera as a safety device. Reddit has plenty of evidence that Polestar did nothing to fix the issue with this update: [XXX] Thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
When vehicle is put into reverse after latest recall update. Periodically it states rear camera is unavailable
The rear view camera consistently fails and gives a camera unavailable error. This is even after the most recent update from Polestar. This can create a very dangerous environment when backing up out of driveways, parking spots, etc.
The vehicles backup camera still does not consistently work despite receiving an over the air software update to remedy the initial recall of the backup camera not working all the time.
When I put the car in reverse I received a warning “Camera Temporarily Unavailable.” The backup camera did not work. This has happened multiple times since the software was updated to version 3.6.4 and as recently as this morning.
Intent of the recent recall was to make the rear view camera reliable, but it has not improved and often (30-40 percent of the time) shows "Camera Is Unavailable".
Even after software update 3.6.4 to fix recall for rear view camera, it is not working properly. This has happened multiple times since the update and many times since receiving this car in 2022.
Randomly the rear camera is unavailable, a software fix was supposed to solve this issue and was applied to my vehicle and it's still having the same error.
Polestar release version 3.6.4 update that when applied did not inform us that the one pedal drive was set. The vehicle prior to the update was set to 2 pedal meaning when the gas pedal was let go it would coast and slowly come to a stop. The one pedal immediately was enabled which is a safety as I was not aware and the software did not mention it being activated. It nearly caused me to have a safety issue driving home. The backup camera which has been recalled and polestar sent a notice to update the vehicle is still having failures. Polestar has been creating safety hazards with these software pushes without fully testing it.
I received a letter from Polestar claiming that software version 3.3.16 would resolve the "Camera is temporarily unavailable" while reversing. This issue has been recurring in my car for over a year.
While backing up, my vehicle collided with a an approaching vehicle due to reduced rear visibility. At the time of the incident, the rearview camera system did not display any image on the center screen. There were no warning messages or indicators alerting me to a malfunction prior to or during the incident. The loss of rear camera function put my safety and the safety of others at risk, as I was relying on the system for visibility behind the vehicle. Shortly after the accident, I received a safety recall notice from the manufacturer stating that a defect in the parking assist camera system may reduce rear visibility and increase the risk of a crash. The timing of the incident suggests that the defect may have been present and contributed to the crash, although I was not aware of the issue until after the accident occurred.
Reverse camera consistent either “Not Available” or image freezes.
Rear view camera is still broke with the newest firmware. Please hold the accountable
Backup camera not functioning when reversing. Error instead of imaging on screen
Camera error resulting in no rear camera feed when going in reverse.
The camera not unavailable error message continues to come up when the vehicle is in reverse, despite the update to 3.6.4. That update has not fixed the issue in any way even though Polestar claims that was the fix. This is still a dangerous issue
Backup camera not working. Says not available when backing up.
When reversing the car, the rear view camera will malfunction and there will be a message that says "camera not available." This does not happen every time but it does happen once in a few times, which makes backing up dangerous. Polestar has put out an OTA update to fix this but it still occurs for me. The problem hasn't been seen by a dealer, the police, or insurance, etc. No warning lights or any indications that there is anything wrong.
Despite completing the 3.6.4 version OTA update for the most recent recall, the vehicle still sometimes unable to turn on the rear camera when I shift to reverse. It shows the message "camera not available". That software update does not fix the issue and Polestar needs more attention to this issue because it's a safety concern.
My car has exhibited the "camera not available " for the rear camera infrequently, and despite this being addressed in a recall in the 3.6.3 software update, I still received a "camera not available " message today in normal operating conditions, on software 3.6.4. This issue seems to stem from the computer hardware used in earlier models of the Polestar 2, which presents a safety issue. Polestar should be required to replace this compute unit with the one used in more recent cars, where they clearly addressed this issue and are trying to brush this under the rug for early customers. Considering this is a mandatory requirement on all cars in the US produced since 2018, the decision to cheap out and use a cheap processing unit is inexcusable. This system should have been designed to have its own dedicated sub-system, just like the low latency system required for core car functions.
After the recent update to 3.6.4 my backup camera has failed about 20% of the time. This did not happen as often on the previous version of 3.4.4
A recent update was meant to correct a recall regarding an unavailable backup camera. I received the update, 3.6.4 but I still get camera not available issues frequently.
Rear backup camera is unreliable, even after the latest software update. It does not always turn on when going into reverse, instead displaying a "camera unavailable" message.
After the OTA update from the Polestar manufacturer, we still get the "Unavailable Reverse Camera" notification that has plagued this car for years now. The physical hardware was made to bare minimum standards and is unable to operate proficiently since adding multiple feature to the car. Most cars that are affected are the pre-facelift models with less ram in the center infotainment console. Most reliably produced by starting the vehicle in the reverse from it sitting overnight. And even more reliably produced when it needs to swap driver profiles based on the person's key, if it's not the same one used the last time it was driven.
Recall 25V-280 which involved a software update to resolve the camera issue did NOT resolve the issue in my car. When first put in reverse, I continue to frequently get blinking camera feed, delayed feed, and the message “camera is temporarily unavailable.” The software update P3.6.3 was meant to fix this to comply with the recall. This update did not provide any improvement and the safety issues continues.
I got the letter for polestar 2 back up camera recall, however my care was updated to 3.6.4 OTA before the letter came and I'm still getting the camera is unavailable warning when I put the car in reverse
Polestar has stated that software 3.6.3 and above address the rearview camera open recall issue, Manufacturer Recall Number RP1056, NHTSA Recall Number 25V280, however I installed 3.6.4 last week and I continue to have instances of reoccurence of the issue related to this recall campaign, "Camera Temporarily Unavailable" when entering reverse.
Backup camera was previously recalled. Polestar released version 3.6.4 and claimed it fixed the issue. However, it’s the same, if not worse, than before. “Camera currently unavailable” error message still displays upwards of 50% of the time after putting the car into reverse.
Backup camera often displays message "Camera Temporarily Unavailable". This has been an ongoing problem, and I have the most updated software 3.6.4. I received a recall notice (25V-280) that outlines this problem, but it states that my car is ineligible because I have the latest software. In fact, the problem is WORSE with the latest software. This issue happens virtually every time I put the car into reverse. On prior software versions, the problem existed but was not as pronounced.
When backing up the camera becomes unavailable. This is after a software update (v3.6.4) that was suppose to resolve the issue.
My car is on the latest update (3.6.4) and the rear back-up camera and related reversing safety systems still malfunction. The camera feed is choppy and stutters which is disorienting. Additionally, the camera will suddenly go from functional to a blank screen while relying on it to reverse. I believe this is due to Polestar's outdated processor included in the infotainment module. They've sent many software updates and none have worked. This puts pedestrians, other drivers and myself at risk when I am reversing. All components are said to be working properly by Polestar when they clearly don't. It's been this way since I purchased the vehicle in 2022.

This is related to safety recall 25V-280. My backup camera is still producing the “Camera temporarily unavailable” message with the latest software update 3.6.4. installed. Matter of fact it seems it has gotten worse since 3.6.4. to the point where it is reproduceable after each deep sleep. My vehicle is a 2022 Polestar 2 LRDM with no packages. The scenario that triggers the issue is: Car parked and locked overnight, unlock, get in, buckle up and put car in reverse. This process takes less than 4 seconds. The backup camera first flickers a few times then usually shows “Camera temporarily unavailable” message. I have started to capture this with my cell phone so I have evidence. It appears 3.6.4. is NOT a fix for the backup camera issues that triggered the recall 25V-280. I am not an expert but believe only a hardware upgrade with improved processing capabilities will fix this issue as all software fix attempts failed so far.
There was a recent software update 3.6.4 that has made my reverse camera, reverse parking sensor and rear cross traffic warning totally disappear. When I put the car in reverse, the camera doesn’t work at all. It doesn’t even appear - totally unusable. This is a new issue with this update - the rear camera previously worked most of the time (occasionally, I would get “camera unavailable” message but I don’t even get that now - completely nonfunctional now)
All Polestar 2 cars including mine have a critical failure in the cpu which prevents the backup camera from working correctly. When the car is placed into reverse the backup camera appears but flickers and ultimately goes out with a message stating “backup camera unavailable.” This is extremely dangerous and has not been fixed by any of their software updates. My car is currently on 3.6.4 which arrived over the air just a week ago.
Parking assist camera often does not turn on when car is placed in reverse. The "camera temporarily unavailable" message appears. This car has been updated with the V3.6.4 software "fix" for this problem. It has gotten worse since the installation of this new version. Failure of this system puts me and others outside of the vehicle in danger of collision and/or injury. User interface tablet and TCAM system have both been reset since installation of the V3.6.4 software update.
When initially starting to drive the car, the backup camera fails to activate when the car is put into reverse. If I stop and turn the camera off and then back on, it will begin functioning. I think the backup camera should just be on when the vehicle is in reverse.
Backup camera still failing after software update fix of 3.6.4. The screen still shows the message 'Camera is temporarily unavailable.' In one day it failed to initialize three times. Even repressing the camera button to force the rear view camera to work will fail again within seconds. This is dangerous because of the blind spots and all parking collision and rear cross traffic alerts also fail.
Backup camera issue still not resolved with the latest update that was required to fix the issue. Car still opens on surround view, stutters really bad, or says disabled which is dangerous and has led to many accidents. The only solution seems to be to replace the head units in these vehicles. There is no reason a $70k vehicle doesn’t have a properly powered head unit for what it does. Has been a constant issue since the release of the vehicle.
After the most recent update, there are still common rear view camera failures where the screen turns black. This has been the second software update to “fix” the issue without it being resolved.
I have installed the latest software update version 3.6.4 which was supposed to resolve the fault backup camera problem that has been persistent since the day I bought the car in 2021. The backup camera continues to fail to engage a majority of the times that I enter the car. Neither of the previous two recalls have been effective and the camera continues to consistently malfunction.
The backup camera frequently fails to come on. Screen displays "Camera is temporarily unavailable" on a black background. This can last for minutes. The car has SW version 3.2.8.
Backup camera is temporarily unavailable
backup camera says camera temporarily unavailable when put in reverse. Took the car to Dyer and Dyer Volvo to get latest software update but the issue happened multiple times after getting it fixed from dealership.
Backup camera is unavailable during reverse . Car has tiny rear windows so a backup camera must work properly when reversing
The infotainment in my vehicle has been flaky since I purchased in in Q1 of 2025. I have experienced: * Infotainment randomly restarting while driving * No audio (Includes turn signal, music, navigation, etc.) * Reverse camera occasionally fails when going into reverse. Just says "Camera unavailable". * Can't access climate controls * Consistently slow. Examples: [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Backup camera frequently says "unavailable" despite being on most recent software and reset of the system
The back up camera fails to show intermittently even with the latest update
The rear camera of my car frequently stops working, leaving me without a clear view behind. Though Polestar have attempted to improve this with OTA software updates, the problem has never truly gone away. The rear camera view is often "temporarily unavailable", it is also frequently lagging with frozen frames or video feed that misses frames. There are many reports of this available online as other owners post to ownership forums and subreddits.
When I reverse the car, the back up camera repeatedly goes black and says not available. In order to correct this I have to park the car in the midst of backing up and put in reverse again to reset the system. Very dangerous when backing up or out of spots when the camera goes black.
Back up camera cuts out randomly. Safety of others is decreased due to loss of visibility. Dealers have a software and hardware fix however it is not pushed out to the owners at large unless you come into a service for another reason. Unknown No.
The Polestar 2 has a vastly documented issue (e.g. online communities) where the backup camera fails to load, is choppy or flat out cuts to black in the middle of a maneuver. This is a massive safety issue for pedestrians and has not been fixed or even alleviated since NHTSA has first notified Polestar.
Rear backup camera failed to initialize upon reversing. The camera screen displays that camera is temporarily unavailable, requiring switching the camera off/on to reinitialize.
Backup camera fails regularly. The video will freeze/stutter or the camera will switch off and a ‘camera unavailable’ message is displayed. Pedestrians near the car are at risk of being hit if the camera fails while driving in reverse. The car has huge blind spots in the rear end. The dealership has told me they cannot fix the issue because all Polestar 2s have this defect and it must be fixed by a software update. There has been no update to fix this issue.
Rear camera does not work 100% of the time and becomes a black screen saying"camera access unavailable"
Back up camera does not function when putting car in reverse.
My 2022 Polestar 2’s rear camera regularly fails to operate, which limits my ability to safely reverse my vehicle. This is a persistent issue that has not improved despite successive software updates to the infotainment system. In sum, this is an unsafe and persistent condition warranting a recall.
Rear camera malfunction
The car at the most random times has the rear camera just suddenly fail and it'll say "Camera is temporarily unavailable". This is pretty difficult to work with as the rear view window is already really small and I'm unable to see much. This seems to be a pretty common issue when browsing online forums.
Upon having just entered the vehicle and putting it into reverse, the reverse camera fails to function, with a Polestar-provided dialogue, “Camera is Temporarily Unavailable”, in the main display.
The backup camera rarely loads after getting in the car making it difficult to safely back the car up with the limited rear window visibility.
Randomly on reversing, back view camera goes out with a message camera not available while vehicle is reversing. Becomes safety issue with no visibility on the back to reverse the car, it is random and would say occurs 20% of times in different places/environments.
My report is in regard to campaign number 24V477000, Rearview Camera May Not Display. Though the manufacturer purports to have corrected the problem through an Over-The-Air update, that has not been my experience. After I received the purported fix in mid-2024, the only noticeable difference has been that a message stating "Camera temporarily unavailable" replaces what was before a black display. I reported that I still experience this problem to the dealer, who in early 2025 manually updated my vehicle software to 3.3.16, but I still experiencing persistent daily issues with my rearview camera. The problem occurs most frequently immediately after startup. Based on the software changes from the recall that limits certain vehicle functionality during reversing (i.e., disabling map information in the gauge cluster) it is my firm belief that the vehicle lacks sufficient computing hardware to process the camera feed. I do not believe the vehicle is safe nor does it meet the requirements of FMVSS 1111. This problem has been present since I took delivery in January 2023. My understanding speaking with the dealer is that later-produced vehicles with upgraded computing hardware do not suffer from this issue. Therefore, I believe the manufacturer instituted the recall knowing that software alone would not be sufficient. In doing so, it is my opinion that the manufacturer has misled consumers about the safety and effectiveness of the recall.
When vehicle is shifted to reverse gear, the parking camera will not display and instead an screen showing "Camera is temporarily unavailable". Once in this screen the rear camera does not reset itself. Operator need to use one hand to toggle the camera view off and on again on the center screen display to re-gain visibility to the rear, which may pose a safety risk as it distract the operator during an reverse event and also limits rear visibility.
Backup camera would randomly stop working while the vehicle is backing up
Backup camera still not working despite recall last year with a software update solution. Currently on software 3.4.4 and still having "camera is temporarily available" or flickering almost every time I try to reverse.
Reverse camera failed completely probably as a result of OTA software update 3.1.9
The backup camera has frequent delays in activating -- approximately 5 seconds and regularly shows an error message with a black screen stating that the "camera is temporarily unavailable." I'm providing documentation from a November 22nd incident, but it happens more frequently.
I know there is a recall affecting the backup camera, and supposedly my car is not affected. But I have had this problem regularly since I have owned the car. Randomly, when I put the car in reverse, I get the message “Camera Temporarily Unavailable”, even though my VIN is not included in the recall. Please expand the recall and make Polestar come up with a fix. This is dangerous.
When putting the car in reverse, camera does not display video feed and shows the message "camera temporarily unavailable". This happened twice in a row when trying to parallel park. Later in the day the issue appeared to have resolved itself and has not reappeared.
Backup camera fails to activate instead a message on the screen appears saying 'Camera is temporary unavailable'. Without cameras it's difficult to see directly behind the car and around blind spots endangering pedestrians. This occurs at least once a week and I've started documenting the occurrences. According to dealer this is a known issue to Polestar. The dealer did update the software which has not fixed the issue. Polestar also recommended restarting the infotainment system and TCAM which takes several minutes and does not fix the issue. I've also experienced where the blind spot sensors fail to activate when the camera is unavailable and one time where the screen was stuck.
Since the latest software update, rear view camera is occasionally unavailable. I have the latest software installed on the car. Since this happens occasionally and I live about an hour away from the service center, I didn't take it to the service center. Before the latest software, the camera was going in and out when I was reversing, and this version of the software was supposed to fix the camera issues.
Recently, Polestar released a version of the onboard OS "Android Automotive" that was supposed to deal with an existing safety issue that has been reported to the nhtsa involving the rear view camera being unresponsive/blinking. The version of software released to address this is 3.1.9. Unfortunately, under this new software, the car's camera system has become completely unavailable, with the OS displaying "camera is temporarily unavailable".
Constantly displaying camera is temporary unavailable when I go in reverse. I am short and the hatchback feature makes it so I can’t see behind me. This happens multiple times a day. 9/10 times I can guarantee I get this message when I reverse
Polestar dealer performed the software update for the recall on 7/11/2024 and the error message "Camera is temporarily unavailable" started to display again on 7/23/2024 and no backup camera image was available which is a safety concern.
Rear back up camera keeps going in / out, freezing and I have almost hit cars/people because I thought the car was stationary (screen frozen). The screen flickers constantly making backing up very treacherous.
The contact owns a 2022 Polestar Polestar 2. The contact stated that while reversing, the contact became aware that the back-up camera display had failed to display an image and was flickering on and off. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

The rear view camera system constantly switches from rear view to 360 degree view. In rear view mode the screen will go black for several seconds then back to rear camera view. This behavior can repeat for minutes until it stabilizes and then shows the rear view camera without interruption. This puts pedestrian safety at risk during the periods when the screen goes black. This has been reported by many customers in popular forum posts. My vehicle has not been inspected yet.
There are two major mechanical problems: 1. The backup camera is unreliable and dangerous. It flickers horribly while in use, often blacking out for multiple seconds at a time. 2. The automatic braking feature is overly sensitive and occasionally slams the brakes when you're trying to park, making you think you've hit something. I've asked Polestar to fix both of these issues, or to at least disable the automatic braking. No luck.
The reverse camera functions intermittently, and frequently flickers or does not display an image.
The car's rear camera freezes up for a few second and then blacks out intermittently. An error code even appears, "Camera is temporarily unavailable." I am terrified that one of my kids (or someone else) is going to run behind the car and I won't realize it because the camera is frozen. I know other owners are experiencing this, too, and it's only a matter of time until it kills someone.
Modem failed on vehicle on 02/04/222. Vehicle went in for diagnostic service on that issue on 02/14/2022. Manufacturer installed new software update which added Auto Brake part of Cross Traffic Alert is to stop the vehicle in the shortest possible distance to avoid collision and did not tell me it was added or advise how to disable it. On the morning of 2/15/2022, while using due caution and circumspection, I attempted to back into my flat, level and unobstructed residential driveway. For no reason at all, a loud noise went off and, for no reason at all, this braking system, engaged immediately. I immediately experienced neck pain. The following morning, I pulled straight out of the same driveway and pulled "head first" into my garage. I then went to exit my garage with due caution and circumspection and with no obstacles of any nature behind my vehicle. Again, for no reason at all again, a loud noise went off and, for no reason at all, this braking system, engaged immediately. I again immediately experienced neck pain. The neck pain persisted resulting in my reporting the events to the dealership that morning and eventually the manufacturer that afternoon. I then sought chiropractic diagnosis and treatment. I was diagnosed with having experienced "whiplash" and have been undergoing treatment (at my expense) since 02/15/2022 and still have not fully recovered. Dealership advised me for the first time the afternoon of 2/15/2022 that this new breaking system was installed via a software upgrade on 02/14/2022. Dealership advised me that the new breaking system can be disabled manually on a "drive - by - drive" basis. This is dangerous because the auto must be in reverse gear to activate the time consuming 2 step disable process and operator must remember to disable during every use. Manufacturer advised me today that what I perceive to be a safety defect is "performing as designed" and that it will not be taking any remedial measures of any nature.

Parking sensors are susceptible to water getting in, causing malfunction.
