Polestar has not provided a remedy for over six months. This is a major safety issue during back up and has almost caused accidents already. The issue is the recall of the backup camera.
While driving, the center display screen has shut off and remains to be unfunctional. This screen is the primary way any collision warnings and rear view video. This car is not driveable and extremely unsafe without the display screen as there is almost no rear view visibility without it. The rear view video did not always work beforehand either, but this makes it completely unfunctional.
What component or system malfunctioned: Rear auto brake, but the underlying issue may be the underpowered processor / IHU Is it available to inspect? Only if you want to visit me in North Carolina, but you're welcome to look at the car. How was the safety at risk? After leaving a parking space (with a fairly tight exit), and placing the car in Drive and driving forward, there were two instances where rear auto brake activated (Despite driving forward) and caused sudden deceleration of the vehicle. Safety would have been at risk if this happened on a busy street; there were no damages or injuries because this happened on a quiet residential street with no traffic. Reproduction - has not been reproduced at all, it was a one-off. Reported to others - not yet, but I do plan to report it to the manufacturer. There were no warnings prior to the failure.
What component or system failed? The backup camera regularly fails to show the view behind the vehicle, with the message "camera not available". This appears to be connected with an overloaded / underpowered computer / IHU. Safety is put at risk because the rear visibility is limited when the backup camera is not functional, and the failure is a distraction to the driver. The dealer has seen the problem but says another firmware update to fix it might be coming at some point. The vehicle has not been inspected by anybody else, because it's a model/year-wide known issue. There were no warnings prior to the failure. This has occurred on many dates, including today.
What failed? There have been a couple instances of the screen (IHU) rebooting while just driving down the road. This temporarily disables the HVAC (including defroster) and turn signal sounds. It is unclear which ADAS functions are impacted. It is available for inspection upon request, if you visit me in NC. How was safety put at risk? Disabling the defroster could cause the windshield to fog up quickly, and the distraction of the IHU rebooting could cause the driver to focus on the issue instead of the road. Safety related ADAS functions may also have been impacted, that is unclear. This has not been confirmed or reproduced by a third party, it has only happened a couple of times and is fairly random. If I had to guess it's an OOM (out of memory) condition in the IHU caused by an under-spec'd IHU plus a memory leak somewhere. Has it been inspected by anybody else? Nope. Where there any warnings? The IHU was more sluggish than usual, but there were no other warnings.
When reversing the car, the backup camera is not available. So when I am backing up the car, the camera cutting out means that I can't see if there are any pedestrians or cars behind me. It has not been taken to a service center, as the nearest one is not currently possible to visit for me. It has not been inspected by manufacturer or anyone else, and there were no warning lamps or symptoms prior.
ALL CAMERAS HAVE STOPPED WORKING. I ALSO CANNOT ACCESS THE REAR-AUTO BARKE CONTROL. I ALREADY REPORTED THIS TO NHTSA. THE DEALERSHIP LEFT ME 1 MESSAGE TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT, AND HENCE IGNORED MY RETURN PHONE CALLS.
The backup camera will not work at all. In fact none of the cameras are working. My firmware/software is up to date. The service center can’t book me until 2 months from now. That’s too much time. It isn’t safe because the rear window is so small. This car was designed to work with cameras. The screen says “Camera is temporarily unavailable.”
Drove car to the grocery store 5 minutes down the street. Shopped for ~20 minutes, returned to my car and loaded my groceries in my trunk. Shut the trunk and returned the cart to the cart corral. Returned to the vehicle, unlocked via the door handle, put the car in reverse, and was greeted with a "Camera system unavailable" message. My car is on the latest OTA update 3.6.4, which is intended to fix the backup camera issues.
Backup camera often says its unavailable.
Backup camera routinely disappears with message that Backup camera is unavailable when car is started, which is when car is most commonly reversed. Processor is not adequate to perform the various tasks associated with car start-up and to simultaneously provide backup camera imagery. This happens approximately 80% of the time when the car is started and put in reverse. Car has most recent software installed. This continues to occur even after software update that was supposed to resolve this.
There have been two recalls to address the backup camera failing to initialize when the vehicle is put into reverse. After the most recent update, my camera fails to initialize even more than before.
There is a feature to create a scheduled charge for the vehicle. This feature is stuck on, turning it off on the vehicle does not override the feature on the phone. The phone will not disable it. As a result, I am unable to charge my vehicle (until the scheduled time, presumably). Additionally, the feature to reset the TCAM system is non-responsive, which is one of the supposed fixes, how am I able to reset the system if the command to do so does not respond? Power cycling the infotainment did not work. Force closing the app did not work.
The rear-view camera continues to be an issue and is worse with each software update that is installed, in an attempt to fix the camera. When entering the car and shifting into reverse, the rear camera does not show and states 'unavailable'. This issue has persisted for over a year. Given the small rear window and potential blind spots, the rear camera is an important safety tool. In addition, the latest fix has resulted in sensors not making an audible sound about 50% of the time (rear cross traffic, parking sensors, etc.). The issue with the camera not working started when the system was updated from android automotive operating system. Polestar continues to try and 'fix' this issue by removing features in the system to free up memory in the computer system, however this is not a software issue. This is clearly a hardware issue that needs to be addressed.
While backing up, my vehicle collided with a an approaching vehicle due to reduced rear visibility. At the time of the incident, the rearview camera system did not display any image on the center screen. There were no warning messages or indicators alerting me to a malfunction prior to or during the incident. The loss of rear camera function put my safety and the safety of others at risk, as I was relying on the system for visibility behind the vehicle. Shortly after the accident, I received a safety recall notice from the manufacturer stating that a defect in the parking assist camera system may reduce rear visibility and increase the risk of a crash. The timing of the incident suggests that the defect may have been present and contributed to the crash, although I was not aware of the issue until after the accident occurred.
My car is on the latest update (3.6.4) and the rear back-up camera and related reversing safety systems still malfunction. The camera feed is choppy and stutters which is disorienting. Additionally, the camera will suddenly go from functional to a blank screen while relying on it to reverse. I believe this is due to Polestar's outdated processor included in the infotainment module. They've sent many software updates and none have worked. This puts pedestrians, other drivers and myself at risk when I am reversing. All components are said to be working properly by Polestar when they clearly don't. It's been this way since I purchased the vehicle in 2022.
backup camera does not work even after polestar released software and i installed it
The backup camera has frequent delays in activating -- approximately 5 seconds and regularly shows an error message with a black screen stating that the "camera is temporarily unavailable." I'm providing documentation from a November 22nd incident, but it happens more frequently.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V477000 Recall was complete via a software update performed by the dealership to version 3.1.9. After the recall was successfully performed, I am continuing to experience an issue where the rear view camera image does not display. When putting the vehicle in reverse, I get an error on the infotainment screen : "camera is temporarily unavailable"
Recently, Polestar released a version of the onboard OS "Android Automotive" that was supposed to deal with an existing safety issue that has been reported to the nhtsa involving the rear view camera being unresponsive/blinking. The version of software released to address this is 3.1.9. Unfortunately, under this new software, the car's camera system has become completely unavailable, with the OS displaying "camera is temporarily unavailable".
When placing car into reverse the backup camera does not work and instead displays message "Camera is temporarily unavailable" Car was taken into Polestar service 5/24/24 for issue and IHU was reset and was told that issue is from a software glitch that will be addressed by an OTA update but no ETA. Problem returned less than a week later. Contacted customer service and told same thing but no estimate when a fix will be released. This is not acceptable and car is unsafe to back up due to blind spots from the cars design.
Software 3.1.2 broke the backup camera. Upon start, the backup camera now flickers on and off about 20 times before it stabilizes. This is especially problematic given the limited visibility of the rear view window, which makes backing out quite dangerous.
The rear view camera system constantly switches from rear view to 360 degree view. In rear view mode the screen will go black for several seconds then back to rear camera view. This behavior can repeat for minutes until it stabilizes and then shows the rear view camera without interruption. This puts pedestrian safety at risk during the periods when the screen goes black. This has been reported by many customers in popular forum posts. My vehicle has not been inspected yet.
Backup camera has consistently poor function and is a safety hazard. Camera often cuts out multiple times while backing up. Sometimes the camera will not display images at all. It is completely unpredictable and unreliable. This has been reported to Polestar during a service visit and they states camera operating normally. I have heard of numerous other Polestar owners experiencing similar issues with the backup camera with no resolution offered. This is a significant safety issue that needs to be addressed.
Backup camera is delayed when putting the vehicle in reverse. Delay can be up to 20 mins. Back up camera will display 360 view when putting the vehicle in reverse. Both scenarios occurs randomly, although consistent.
The rear view camera flickers on and off right after the first turn on in the morning or switching profiles. It appears to take a really long time (10 secs or more) for the system to boot up for the rear camera to work.
Windows Rattling noises, and many noises happening, POLESTAR said those noises are what they designed, not going to repair the noises
Vehicle becomes nonrespive and becomes disabled. The only way to get vehicle to function is by disconnecting the 12v battery and waiting for the car to reset and then proceed. This happened multiple times and the manufacturer is not taking care of the problem.
Vehicle is not safe if driver exits and passengers in vehicle. The vehicle doors, a/c, and operations cease while unlocked or locked with parties present. Safety risk for all ages in hot and cold climates. Deficient mobile app doesn't consistently connect to remotely turn on A/C which is displayed as C when you are set to F and passengers control or calculation if they could control becomes confusion with display off. Key in car changes nothing. One expects an on car to be on and a key in car to equal on if drivers exits.
Vehicle spontaneously displays eCall/SOS warning, promptly loses GPS signal, SOS functionality, and ability to unplug charger. Other telecommunications features are likely compromised. The error also disables the keys, and one's ability to open doors from exterior. Phone app loses connection to car. This has happened on three (3) separate occasions. The first two errors were cleared by a technician at the local service dealer, but the problem persists. The first issue occurred on July 16, 2022 and was cleared on July 18. The second issue occured on July 20th and cleared on July 21st. The third occurrence happened on July 24, 2022.
Occasionally while operating my Polestar 2, the TCAM module becomes unresponsive. Sometime it happens when I first turn it on and it is initially establishing communication, other times it's happened when driving under a steel bridge or overpass that temporarily blocks view of the sky. Particularly troublesome while navigating tricky interchanges where you actually need the guidance. Pressing and holding the 'home' button on the head unit for ~15 seconds until the whole car's infotainment/speedometer/etc. system does a hard restart has been enough to resolve for me each time it's happened (4x now). Additionally - and unsure if related or not? - I have received two phantom errors. One stating "Propulsion System. Service Required." After confirming online that this was a not uncommon issue, I proceeded to drive it anyway and it disappeared after 2 minutes and has not returned. The other error was a "low tire pressure" error when I got in the vehicle. I checked all tire pressures with a gauge I know to be accurate and confirmed that there were no low tire pressures and then 'stored' the existing tire pressures as accurate (I believe the vehicle only reports deltas from stored state, as the actual tire pressures are not shown anywhere in the infotainment system).
The Car loses GPS information and LTE connectivity repeatedly. Manufacturer has not done anything about it. If I am driving with GPS on, I can get lost as it loses connectivity while driving. Unable to call SOS or CONNECT features without LTE connectivity.
All connectivity goes away including emergency and SOS capability, and GPS.
TCAM/Navigation fails. GPS location got really flaky and jumped all over the map, and ultimately stopped working altogether. This TCAM failure seems like a common issue on the polestar forums. The safety concern is mainly the amount of confusion it caused since it was telling me to turn left or right in places where that wouldn't have been legal or safe (because it thought I was somewhere else).
Constant issues with the cars data connection causing an inability to operate certain functions of the car. This includes safety related actions like SOS and Connect. Aside from the possible safety issues, the dropping of data to the car prevents a multitude of features from being available to those in the vehicle. This happens on many occasions across a wide range of driving scenarios. The car is brand new and started this behavior less than 200 miles after purchase. There is a connection icon that shows a data error, with no other indicators from the vehicle. There have been times where I was unable to use navigation to get to my destination requiring use of my phone to complete the task. The dealer has been reluctant to address the issue and admit any widespread occurrence. I may be willing to have my car inspected depending on level of invasiveness.
3/3/22 TCAM went out no LTE no GPS no SOS no Roadside Assistance called dealer had appt for 3/5/22 to have repaired picked up that afternoon everything worked this afternoon 3/8/22 it all went out again will call dealer again tomorrow and miss more work due to this
4G LTE (TCAM) lost cellular signal, which controls all connectivity to car including entertainment, driver assistance, SOS and sometimes access to unlock/lock car
