IN 2013, MY 2000 GRAND PRIX HAD SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHILE DRIVING DOWN A CITY STREET. WHILE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, FLAMES WERE THEN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE WHOLE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND HAD TO RIP OPEN THE HOOD WITH POWER TOOLS TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. A WEEK PRIOR I HAD AN OIL CHANGE AND TWO NEW FRONT TIRES PUT ON. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS AND WAS TOWED TO A SALVAGE LOT.

I WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION WHEN SUDDENLY I NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOOD. SO ONCE THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND POPPED THE HOOD TO DISCOVER A SMALL FIRE THAT HAD BEGAN INSIDE THE ENGINE. AFTER FRANTICALLY LOOKING FOR ASSISTANCE A LOCAL RESIDENT USED A FIRE HYDRANT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. BY THE TIME THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT EXTENSIVE DAMAGE HAD BEEN DONE TO THE ENGINE. HE WAS MET AT OUR HOUSE BY A GM REPRESENTATIVE THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE FIRE INVESTIGATOR ADVISED US THERE HAD BEEN ANOTHER HE WAS SENT TO A COUPLE WEEKS BEFORE OURS. GM FINALLY RECALLED THE CAR 2 YEARS LATER IN 2006, SO I KNOW THEY KNEW ABOUT THIS ONE AS WELL. THE INFORMED US TO REBUILD OUR HOME AND THEY WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT INSURANCE DID NOT TAKE CARE OF, WHICH AMOUNTED TO 133,000. THE ALARM WOULD SOUND AND THE DOOR LOCKS WOULD AUTOMATICALLY LOCK HER IN THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE TAIL LIGHTS AND THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS. THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD ALSO FAIL SPORADICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. ALL THIS HAS BEEN DONE WITHIN THE LAST 10 MONTHS SINCE WE PURCHASED THE CAR ON PAYMENTS ON JUNE 1, 2009. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM NOT SURE AS OF THIS LAST REPAIR IF IT HAS CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. MY MAIN CONCERN IS IF I WERE DRIVING ON A WINDY MOUNTAINOUS ROAD WITH NO TURNOUTS AND THE CAR DECIDED IT WANTED TO STALL, WHERE WOULD I GO OR DO. THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW COMPONENTS WERE REPLACED. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING REGARDING THE SECURITY WARNING INDICATOR. THE COMPUTER CODE DETECTED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING PROPERLY. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 204,000.

I HAD MY WIRING HARNESS CATCH FIRE ON 2-2-03 WITHOUT WARNING. GM INSPECTING AND I AM STILL WAITING ON THEIR REPORT. HOWEVER, AFTER PICKING UP THE CAR FROM REPAIRS ON 2-15-03, I DROVE THE CAR 2-15 AND 2-16 AND TO WORK ON 2-17. UPON RETURNING TO MY CAR TO START IT, IT WOULD START AND THEN DIE IMMEDIATELY. THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE WIRING HARNESS GOING TO A/C COMPRESSOR WHICH RESULTED IN INTERMITTENT POWER PROBLEMS AND BAD AIR CONDITIONING. THE COMPRESSOR WOULD STOP WORKING WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RUNNING AND THE COOLING FAN IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WOULD ALWAYS BE RUNNING AT 50 DEGREE TEMPERATURES, WHICH IS ABNORMAL. DEALER SPICED IN NEW WIRES AND ADDED EXTRA PADDING TO MAKE SURE THAT IT DOES NOT WEAR THROUGH AGAIN.

WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MPH VEHICLE TOTALLY SHUTDOWN, IT WAS HARD TO STEER/NO LIGHTS, AND NO WARNING LIGHTS. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. CONSUMER HAS EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM 5 TIMES, BUT NOT AS BAD AS THIS TIME.*AK
I FEEL THIS VEHICLE HAS NUMEROUS SAFETY DEFECTS. THIS CAR IS TO NEW TO HAVE HAD THE ITEMS LISTED REPLACED. UNFORTUNEATELY THE DEALER CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATION. MY CHILDREN ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME AND I WILL BE TRADING THIS VEHICLE OFF VERY SOON. I HAVE ASKED 3 TIMES FOR A COMPONENT BOX AND KNOWONE CAN SEEM TO LOCATE ONE. I FEEL THE DEALERSHIP IS FALLING SHORT ON THEIR PART OF "OBLIGATED 36 MONTHS OR 36,000 MILES". THIS IS THE RESPONSE I AM GETTING FROM PONTIAC. UNFORTUNEATELY "ALABAMA" IS THE ONLY STATE THAT I KNOW OF THAT DOES NOT HAVE A LEMON LAW. IS THERE ANY OTHER OPTIONS THAT A CONSUMER HAS AND IF THERE IS WHAT ARE THEY?
