SAFETY DEFECT: Database Classification Failure - 2013 Ram Vehicles Vehicle: 2013 Ram 1500, VIN: [ENTER VIN ABOVE] Owner: [ENTER NAME ABOVE] Email: [ENTER EMAIL ABOVE] Phone: [ENTER PHONE ABOVE] Defect Description: The 2013 model year Ram vehicles suffer from a systematic database classification failure that prevents normal ownership operations and creates safety hazards. Due to the Dodge-to-Ram brand transition in 2013, these vehicles are not properly recognized in automotive databases used by: • Auto parts retailers (O'Reilly's, AutoZone, etc.) • Insurance companies and quote systems • Tire retailers and service centers • Emergency roadside assistance systems • Government vehicle registration systems Safety Implications: • Inability to quickly procure critical replacement parts during emergencies • Delays in obtaining proper insurance coverage • Emergency service complications due to vehicle misidentification • Forced manual workarounds that increase human error risk Consumer Impact: Vehicle owners are forced to spend excessive time and resources (phone calls, manual lookups, repeated explanations) to perform basic vehicle ownership functions. This constitutes an operational defect that prevents normal commercial transactions. Requested Action: NHTSA should require Stellantis to issue a recall to correct the database classification error across all automotive systems, or provide alternative identification mechanisms that ensure proper vehicle recognition. Root Cause: Stellantis' failure to properly coordinate database updates during the 2013 Dodge Ram to Ram transition, leaving vehicles in a "database orphan" state.
Noticed a tick from engine. The noise kept getting worse and worse. I was driving on beltway when engine lost power out of nowhere
Exhaust bolts at rear of exhaust manifolds spontaneously broke. This appears to be a well known issue with the 5.7L Hemi engines. Apparently the exhaust manifolds warp and the force is enough to break the bolts holding the manifold to the cylinder head. This manifests as a ticking sound when the vehicle is started, exhaust gas containing carbon monoxide is leaking near the firewall and could allow toxic gas into the cab of the vehicle. This represents a safety hazard due to sub-standard engineering.
Engine started to tick. Took it to Dodge after the check engine light came on, it started running rough, and truck started to throw random codes. Dodge tells me its the cam and lifters, which is a known problem for the 5.7 Hemi V8 motors of this era. Chrysler knows of the issue, and there's even a service bulletin regarding it, however Chrysler refuses to repair any of them that are out of warranty. This truck was purchased new by me in 2013, and has a little over 114,000 miles on it, with oil changes done regularly. There is no reason a $44,000, truck should be sold with manufacturer defects, let alone allow the manufacturer to reduse to repair their flawed design.
Vehicle has been serviced 7 times by Lithia Nissan with continuing issues last service date was May 22nd 2023 in which the following services were performed; Oil filter housing, 2 gaskets, installed OEM oil cooler and cleared codes, Pin fit issues with master switch, repaired pin issue. Vehicle has been serviced 2 times by Lithia Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat of Eugene address 2121 Martin Luther King Jr. BLVD. Eugene OR 97401 (541)686-2255 Last service date Oct. 2nd 2023 in which the following services were performed; Engine system repair, injector-fuel, cleared codes, Pin fit issues with master switch repaired pin issues. Vehicle serviced 1 time by Goodyear location 164 W 7th AVE Eugene OR 97401 (541)343-2501 service date Oct. 5th 2023 following service was performed; Replace Resistor Spark Plug, Spark plug- Iridium OE Exact plug, R&R Spark plugs, R&R spark plugs Ignition Coil set, Intake manifold set, cleared codes. Ongoing issues; unresolved by services performed 1.Check engine light 2.Airbag light 3.Hot temp light 4.Power train light 5.Parking brake does not work properly and will roll if not parked on a level surface 6.Master switch driver control will stop working unless I pop it out of the control panel disconnect it and reconnect it. 7.Defrost does not work properly in which makes it hard to see when driving and there is moisture building inside the cabin creating mold which is a health concern. 8.Vehicle will switch into different gears while driving when brake pedal has not been applied or used. 9.Vehicle sometimes shakes and stalls in drive and reverse.
This truck has been diagnosed by a Dodge dealership with catastrophic engine failure and has metal shavings in the engine. The safety of myself and others has been put at risk because the truck shut itself off at a stoplight.

I bought it in 2018 & 1 month later no radio, gps, backup any of the stereo system worked. The only thing that worked was volume. I took it in & they charged me $125 diagnosis & was gonna be over $600 for new system. I never got it fixed. In 2022 with only 122000 miles it had to go in the shop for an engine overhaul because of the problem with missing on 5th cylinder. I have never owned a Dodge Ram before & never will again. I have had nothing but problems with it. I made phone calls & wrote emails & the closest I got to a recall is 2014 was the cutoff year & mine is 2013. I did back into a dumpster because the backup camera doesn’t work in January of 2020. I had insurance with White’s Insurance out of Purdy but I don’t have the paperwork anymore.
On April 5 2022 I took my 2013 dodge ram 1500 5.7 2wd truck to get repaired it cost me $5000 to fix the lifters, cam ,oil pump , rocker arms ,push rods hoses, manifold bolts too cause they were stuck this is at 154,000 mile and like 40,000 mile later 9/25/23 it gives me a code p1416 misfire cylinder 6 / come again. Now the cam could be damaged too just to get the truck opened up again is $2600 Mechanic says the lifter could be deactivated or worse could of been damaging the cam ??? Now what Can you guys help me please
Truck will stall out pulling out in traffic with no signs of a problem. It happened to me today with my kid in the truck. This is unacceptable. This trucks are to expensive to have this. It also will surge and try to go without foot on gas. This is totally unsafe. Dodge needs to fix this.

The contact stated that occasionally the front end of the vehicle was shaking and vibrating while the vehicle lost motive power. The contact arrived at his destination and used an ODB scanner to retrieve DTC codes: P0303 (Cylinder #3 misfire), P0300 (Random misfire), and P219A (Engine Unbalanced). The contact stated that the failure had become a recurring failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the cam shaft needed to be replaced on the right side of the engine. The vehicle had not been repaired. Service power steering fault , power steering is intermittent and will throw a code and you will loss power steering until you reset ignition! Also exhaust manifold bolts seem to break alot
I believe the exhaust manifold is leaking as I can smell gas in the cabin and also truck makes a ticking sound that goes away after 30 seconds when it's warmed up. This seems to be a common issue with this type of truck and should be recalled.

Vehicle engine shuts off while driving especially on the freeway. There is some kind of problem with the lifters on this type of motor. Several people are having this problem.

5.7L Engine failed due to lifter roller bearing disintegrating and filling the engine with debris. This seems to have been a known issue anf has been going on for a long time. This is a danger to passengers when engine fails. Also, cost me $8000 dollars to have a remanufactured engine installed. I don't know how manufactures can get away with this without any kind of compensation to the injured parties.
Check engine light, replaced plugs & coil pack & had to have engine overhauled. $5000 later & now check engine light again valve cover leaks, needs evaporate solenoid & o2 sensor. Service air bag system light comes on. Only 120000 miles when started all this. 79000 miles when I bought in 2018 & the uconnect system, backup, radio & everything went out. It’s a lemon.
2013 Dodge Ram 1500 big horn 2wd 5.7 v8 160000 rebuild valves , rocker arms,push rods ,cam,gaskets, and lifters all damaged bad lifters ate the cam destroyed everything. About 5thousand dollars for the job . Please help seen this happening to other trucks and cars
Dodge ram engine under <100,000 miles has broke down. Dodge does not want to repair the engine.
The exhaust manifold bolts failed a second time, causing and exhaust smell and leak into the cab of the truck. Took it to a dealership who repaired the passenger side only, and now driver side needs repaired. Spoke with RAM only to be told that it is a Known issue but there is no recall, or plan to issue a recall to remedy the issue. There were no warnings by the truck.
Cam and lifters are a common problem on the 13-20 (maybe 21-present too) ram 1500s with 5.7L Hemi. I see this happen all the time with these trucks under 100k miles and even under 50k miles. I don’t think it’s the cam and lifters. I think the problem is more oil starvation type situation. And when they go out it’s costly.
The vehicle developed a ticking noise that was diagnosed by a certified mechanic as being a defective cam and lifter assembly. The engine was at risk of locking up and if not corrected, could have happened on any roadway. The only corrective action for this problem was to replace the engine. I consulted several mechanics in my area and all of them refused to simply rebuild the head. Instead, they all insisted that the engine be replaced. I did so at the cost of $9000. This needs to become a recall.

Electrical Power Steering (EPS) light turned on. Car is not drivable at this time. I understand that there is a known defect with the EPS in this make and model of the year.
The truck just shut off, couldn’t get it started or move it out of traffic. I was out of state and 560 miles from home. No warning lights, no issues just cut off!
My side boxes do not open with key button and do not unlock with button on key and my bolts broke on exhaust manifold on drivers side and passenger side 4 bolts total
The exhaust manifolds break on every truck. Leak exhaust gas. Tech told me every single truck has this problem how is it not a recall yet
Check engine light blinking. Bad lifter in motor causing the engine to shut down while driving, very very dangerous.
Exhaust manifold leak due to both rear studs breaking on each side of the engine. This is my 3rd dodge ram with the 5.7 liter engine that has had this problem. The other vehicle years were a 2003 Ram 2500 and a 2014 Ram 1500. With as many complaints about this problem, I am surprised there hasn't been a fix and a recall. So far, I am 3 trucks each with the same issue. I would think that two exhaust manifolds leaking in the engine compartment would pose as a safety issue by breathing the fumes sucked into the cab.

I AM VERY UPSET THAT RAM TRUCKS FROM 2011 TO 2014 HAVE CONSISTENTLY BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH THE 5TH CYLINDER, (CYL 5 MISFIRE) AND AS TO MY SURPRISE IS A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR ILL BE OUT OF AT LEAST OUT OF 3600.00 (THAT I DON'T HAVE, AND DEFINITELY CANNOT AFFORD A NEW VEHICLE) SPECIALLY WITH ALL THE ISSUES THAT ARE GOING ON WITH COVID-19 AND THE ECONOMY. NOT SURE HOW LONG THE REPAIRS WILL HOLD UP BECAUSE FROM THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS, THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL. MY TRUCK FAILED THE STATE INSPECTION BECAUSE 2 EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD BROKEN OFF AND WERE INSIDE THE CYLINDER HEAD WITH NO WAY TO GET THEM OUT. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO A MECHANIC UPON DISCOVERING HOW DEEP THEY HAD BROKEN OFF WITH NO SUCCESS AT REMOVING THE FIRST ONE AND THE MECHANIC WAS ALSO UNABLE TO REMOVE THEM. THEY HAVE NOW BEEN DRILLED OUT BY THE MECHANIC WHICH CREATED A COOLANT LEAK OUT OF ONE OF THE BOLT HOLES AND IT LOOKS LIKE I'LL NEED A NEW CYLINDER HEAD. I'VE READ IT'S A COMMON ISSUE AND NOW I'M EXPECTING THE DRIVERS SIDE TO DO THE SAME ANY TIME IF THEY AREN'T BROKEN ALREADY.

AS SOON AS I START THE ENGINE, A LOUD TICKING NOISE IS COMING FROM THE ENGINE. AFTER INSPECTING IT, I HAVE BROKEN EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLT THAT CAUSES EXHAUST TO EXIT AT THE HEAD. THE EXHAUST ESCAPES BEFORE IT REACHES THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND THE MUFFLER THUS CAUSING THE LOUD NOISE. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE RAM HEMI ENGINES. IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE "HEMI TICK". ALTHOUGH THIS HAS BEEN A WIDELY KNOWN ISSUE, RAM HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SPARTANBURG CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM (1035 N CHURCH ST, SPARTANBURG, SC 29303, (888) 404-4925) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 50,000.

REAR-MOST PASSENGER SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLT BROKE; IT SHEARED OFF AT THE HEAT SHIELD, CAUSING A LOUD TICK-LIKE NOISE EMITTING FROM AREA. ADDITIONALLY, EXHAUST FUMES ENTER INTO THE CABIN AS A RESULT OF THIS. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME AN EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLT HAS BROKEN (SHEARED OFF) ON MY TRUCK; THE FIRST TIME IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY; NOW, THE REPAIR PRICE QUOTE IS APPROX $800 BECAUSE OF THE EXPECTED TIME TO REMOVE THE BROKEN BOLT. THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AMONG RAM 5.7L V8-POWERED TRUCKS. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO EXHAUST FUMES ENTERING THE CABIN, AND A QUALITY DEFECT ARISING FROM POOR QUALITY COMPONENTS AND/OR IMPROPER TORQUING OF THE BOLTS DURING ASSEMBLY. FCA NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS! THE OLD SAYING, "IF YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR VEHICLE, IT WILL LAST" IS NOT TRUE FOR RAM TRUCKS BECAUSE OF POOR QUALITY CONTROL, SUBPAR PART QUALITY AND IMPROPER ASSEMBLY.

THE ENGINE HAS A TICKING NOISE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE. IT STARTS OFF VERY LOUD, THEN SMOOTHED OUT WHILE IDLING. IF DRIVING AND ACCELERATING THE TICKING IS LOUD ENOUGH TO HEAR IT INSIDE THE TRUCK. IT IS GETTING LOUDER AND LOUDER. I HAVE SERVICE DONE REGULARLY BUT CANNOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. HAS THIS HAPPENED WITH OTHER SIMILAR TRUCKS? THE TRUCK IS IN PERFECT CONDITION MINUS THIS TICK? ANY SUGGESTIONS?

TOOK IT BACK SAID EVERYTHING TESTED FINE. SECOND SHOP REPLACED UPWARD AND DOWNWARD SENSORS 1100.00. 5 MILES LATER SAME CHECK ENGINE CODE. THIRD SHOP SAID THE COULDNT FIND ANYTHING TO PICK IT UP 200.00. I TOOK IT TO DEALER. AT THIS POINT BAD GAS MILEAGE AND HESITAION...THEY KEPT IT TWO MONTHS AND STATED THEY HAD CHRYSLER ENGINEERS IN THE FIELD HELPING THEM. FINALLY 8 WEEKS LATER, I WAS TOLD THE ONLY THIN THEY THINK IT COULD BE WAS WIRING HARNESS. 1400.00 BUT CANT PROMISE THAT WILL FIX IT. IVE REPLACED THROTTLE BODY AND NUMEROUS PARTS TOTALING APPROX. 3500.00. LIGHT STILL ON. DRIVING BACK IT DIED! DEAD! THROTTLE BODY CONTROL MODULE SENSOR ERROR WAS SHOWING ON DASH. DIED WHILE DRIVING. TOWED IT TO THE DEALER I GOT IT FROM. NOW THEY ARE SAYING 3700.00 TO FIX IT. CAMSHAFT AND LIFTERS NOT ONLY THAT ..SO MANY HAVE THIS PROBLEM PARTS ARE ON BACKORDER FOR 3-6 MONTHS! THE BOLTS OR STUDS THAT HOLD THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD TO THE ENGINE BROKE OR SHEARED OFF. THIS PRESENTS A BREAK IN THE ABILITY OF THE ENGINE TO SAFELY TRANSPORT EXHAUST GASES TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. EXHAUST GASES ARE NOW INTRODUCED TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND THE PASSENGER CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. EXHAUST COULD BE SMELLED IN THE CABIN TO THE VEHICLE AT START UP WHICH MEANS THAT CARBON MONOXIDE COULD BE INTRODUCED TO THE CABIN. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. SECONDLY, WITH A EXHAUST LEAK OCCURRING AT THE ENGINE BLOCK, EXHAUST GASES ARE BYPASSING THE POLLUTION CONTROL EQUIPMENT WHICH MAY BE A EPA ISSUE. ISSUE HAS BEEN COMPLAINED ABOUT ON TRUCK FORUMS DATING ALL THE WAY BACK TO 2008 MODELS. SERVICE FOR THIS REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO AGE OF THE TRUCK AND MILEAGE 114,800.

MECHANIC STATED THE C CLIP ON THE LIFTER HAD BROKEN AND THE TRUCK WAS UTILIZING 7 CYLINDERS AND NOT 8. MECHANIC STATED HE COULDN'T PIN POINT A CAUSE FOR THIS TO HAVE HAPPENED, BUT THE REPAIR WOULD BE COSTLY. UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE NOT UNDER ANY WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, I WAS LOOKING ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF THIS WAS UNDER RECALL OR IF THERE WAS A REASONABLE CAUSE FOR THIS TYPE OF BREAKDOWN HOWEVER FOUND THAT MANY ON THE 2013 ENGINES ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE. I HAVE NOT YET CONTACTED CHRYSLER AND BASED UPON WHAT I HAVE READ IN COUNTLESS FORUMS, CHRYSLER'S NOT STANDING BY THE PRODUCT ANYWAY, SO I DECIDED TO FILE THIS COMPLAINT INSTEAD, I'M NOT SURE IF FILING THIS COMPLAINT WILL CHANGE CHRYSLER'S VIEW OF THE DEFECTIVE ENGINES OR NOT BUT SOMETHING NEEDS TO HAPPEN, THUS FAR NO LIVES HAVE BEEN TAKEN HOWEVER IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE ABOVE 50 MPH AND THE ENGINE LOOSES POWER OR SHUTS DOWN AS OUR VEHICLE DID IT COULD EASILY CAUSE LOSS OF LIFE. I WENT TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO SEE HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST TO HAVE THEM DO THE INITIAL REPAIR AND WAS QUOTED $600 TO OVER $2,000 FOR THEIR PROBLEM.

IN TURN, THE MANUFACTURER IN CANADA ADVISED THE CONTACT TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER IN THE USA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NO RESOLUTION. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT ISSUED AN ENGINE RECALL; HOWEVER, THEY ISSUED 27 TSBS ON THE ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE.
HYDRAULIC LIFTER FAILED IN 5.7L HEMI V8 ENGINE, CAUSING DAMAGE TO CAMSHAFT LOBE. VEHICLE UNDRIVEABLE. LIFTER (PART) BACK ORDERED FROM FACTORY FOR 1-2 MONTHS. THIS PART FAILURE IS ALL OVER THE INTERNET, IN RAM/CHRYSLER FORUMS AND CAR REPAIR WEBSITES. NHTSA NEEDS TO LOOK INTO A RECALL. FCA IS NOT STANDING BY CUSTOMERS. IN MY CASE, THEY REFUSE TO EVEN PROVIDE RENTAL ASSISTANCE DURING THE 1-2 MONTH REPAIR PERIOD, WHEN MY TRUCK IS TORN APART SITTING AT THEIR DEALER.

I HEARD ONLY A TICK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND THEY SAID THE OTHER SIDE WAS FINE. IN LESS THAN 1000 MILES AND AROUND 30 DAYS THE OTHER SIDE STARTED TICKING. I CALLED FIAT CHRYSLER AMERICA AND THEY CONTACTED THE SERVICE WRITER AT THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER THE REPRESENTATIVE SPOKE TO THE SERVICE WRITER SHE TOLD ME I SHOULD PAY THE $423 (APPROX) COST TO HAVE IT REPAIRED SINCE THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY OTHER RECOURSE. I WAS SURPRISED THAT AFTER I EXPLAINED THAT THE SERVICE WRITER SAID THIS WAS HAPPENING ON ALL RAM TRUCKS THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY RESPONSE OTHER THAN SAYING IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY. THE FACT THAT THERE WAS A BROKEN BOLT AND THE SERVICE WRITER SAID IT WAS ON ALL RAM TRUCKS THAT THEY SHOULD ADDRESS IT DUE TO DEFECTIVE MATERIALS. I JUST WANT THEM TO ACCEPT THAT IT IS DEFECTIVE MATERIALS AND FIX THIS ISSUE.

HE RECOMMENDED THAT IF YOU'VE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO NOTIFY YOUR STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL. I DID, THEY ASK I FILE IT WITH YOU. I'M NOT ANGRY WITH MY DEALER, OTHER THAN THE FACT THEY ASK ME TO NOTIFY CHRYSLER, AND I TOLD THE THEY SHOULD REPRESENT ME AS THEIR CUSTOMER WITH THE COMPANY. I'M 77 YEARS OLD, BEEN DRIVING OVER 60 YEARS. I'VE NEVER HURT ANOTHER PERSON IN A WRECK, BUT THIS PICKUP IS DANGEROUS. I HAD AT LEAST 1/2 TANK OF GAS EACH OCCURRENCE. I NOTIFIED THE DEALERSHIP ON 1/14/15, DEALERSHIP SAYS THERE ARE NO RECALLS AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT 2 WEEKS BEFORE THEY CAN CHECK OUT THE PROBLEM, WHICH I CONSIDER SERIOUS. OVER THE NEXT THREE MONTHS IT SLOWLY DEVELOPED AN SIGNIFICANT, ONE SECOND PLUS, HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A DEAD STOP. THE SERVICE MANAGER [XXX] AT JOHNSON DODGE TEST DROVE AND AGREED THERE WAS A HESITATION BUT COULDN'T/CAN'T FIX/ADJUST IT DO TO EVERYTHING BEING CONTROLLED BY COMPUTER MODULES. HE SAID, "UNTIL THEY, (RAM ENGINEERS), RELEASE A SOFTWARE FIX/UPDATE OR TECH BULLETIN, THERE WAS NOTHING HE/THEY COULD DO." THIS HESITATION IS SO SEVERE IT REQUIRES THE DRIVER TO ANTICIPATE THE DELAY AND THAN PRE-PRESS THE ACCELERATOR WHEN CROSSING A STREET IN HEAVY TRAFFIC OR OTHER SITUATION REQUIRING TIMELY ACCELERATOR RESPONSE.
