The electronic power steering rack failed. We have had consistent temperatures near 0°f, with highs rarely above freezing for the past couple weeks. The motor and circuit panel for the steering rack built up enough water to freeze solid and completely lock the steering, luckily in the yard so I didn't have to go get my wife from work. But I've had to sideline my work both to work on it, and so my wife can take my truck to her job as this is her truck. I thawed the unit and re sealed the seam by the motor, as well as the cover over the circuit panel. Some part of it appears to have shorted out as it won't work now that it's been thawed, and is giving a message on the dash to service power steering. No prior issues, or warnings that something was failing. Glad it didn't fail last week when my wife and one year old daughter were on the road visiting family hours away. I can barely afford to buy a vehicle any more, never mind take one to a dealer or other shop for repairs. Plus I'm an hour from any of them, and at least 2 weeks wait to get in. I did try to get an answer from a couple of them. I do all my own repairs. I just can't fathom how putting sensitive electrical components underneath a 4wd truck and relying on a half hearted dab of silicone to seal them against the elements is a good idea. What was wrong with good old hydraulic power steering. I'm waiting for a cost and timeframe to get a replacement currently.

The Electronic Power Steering system failed on my Ram 1500 and it became extremely difficult to steer the truck. It created a very unsafe condition to drive the vehicle and Stellantis doesn't cover this VIN in the existing safety recall for this steering system on other Ram trucks.

As I was driving onto the highway, my battery low voltage indicator came on and shortly after my power steering failed. I had this issue earlier this year in April 2025 and replaced the old battery with a new one but after this incident, I don’t think it’s the battery anymore. I believe it’s the Electric Power Steering system.

The drive shaft and both sides of the front half shaft are bad creating damage to front tires. Mechanic said it seems to be a big problem arrising with Rams that shouldn't be going bad.

I was on a 4 hour drive to Ohio and got to my hotel parking lot, started unpacking and my service power steering like came on. Took it into a shop just down the road and it was a struggle to turn it. they told me the rack and pinion went out. Glad I wasn't on the freeway when this happened.

Took Truck to Ram Dealership who duplicated problem. Dealership had to replace entire Electric Power Steering Rack. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY PROBLEM. I ALMOST RAN THE TRUCK OFF THE ROAD WHEN POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE ROUNDING A CURVE. BOTH 2015 AND 2016 RAM 1500 YEARS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR SAME PROBLEM - WHY NOT 2017???? I HAD TO PAY OVER $4,000.00 TO DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING RACK. WHY HAS 2017 MODELS NOT BEEN RECALLED YET?????

Was driving my truck and everything was working fine then the power streering just shut off making it very difficult to control the vehicle then proceeded to go off and intermittently at different times after that now it has been completely gone and not came back. It does same thing if you are pulling to left when it frees up causing a quick left hand turn . This is very dangerous as total loss of steering occurred . Luckily there was room to stop . Lost eps while pulling my Travel Trailer. Was able to get stopped without incident. Restarted vehicle and had eps. On another occasions ,started vehicle and no eps. This has become a problem any time the outside temperature is below 65 degrees. Can usually get eps after letting engine warm up.

At approx. 5:30 am, I exited the hotel to drive to my physician appointment. When I started the truck, a dashlight flashed (service power steering) and I had no power steering. They told me the Tie Rod, Axle, had broken. The Dealer then, told me that the truck would not align so they sent it to the Collision Center. The collision center told me that the truck had a bent frame and it did not happen due to the pothole. That the truck was a death trap and I need not to drive it that the dealer should not have sold me that truck. I went and talked to the Manager at Rick Chevrolet named Kerry and he said we could swap the truck, but I had to make a down payment of an excessive amount due to my credit. I did not know that this truck was a nightmare and I feel why should I have to pay for someone selling me a truck that can kill me and whoever is riding with me. I bought the truck because they are supposed to be safe. This is ridiculous and the dealership is not trying to help me out of this by putting me in a safe vehicle. I am paying for something that is going to cause me bodily harm or my life, and they want me to pay more to get into a safe vehicle. This truck should not have been sold and because it was, they need to take responsibility and swap me out of this death trap. Can you please look into this matter. IT read multiple codes as i have a code reader, checked power and fuses and everything was good but one code keeps coming up c2217 which seems to be associated with a recall for the 2015-16 and 2019 rams. my truck is stuck in my driveway and can not turn the steering wheel to drive safely. luckily i was not driving like some others have been.

The power steering went out while driving. I don’t know why. All I know is it’s not safe for that to happen. I guess that why the recall was about. If this were to happen to a smaller person, I'm not sure how they would be able to keep from going in the ditch or worse, rolling the truck. I'm honestly glad it wasn't my wife or kids driving the truck, this could have been way worse!

I was going maybe 25mph on wet gravel. I had just put the truck into part time 4x4 because it was starting to snow. With no warming maybe 4 min after part time was activated I got a warning ding and service power steering light and the truck wouldn't turn. I nearly lost control on the snow. Again no warning, it happened all at one and I was unable to control the vehicle. I stopped for maybe 5 min and turned the truck off... when I restarted it the steering worked long enough to turn around on the one way road before the steering once again went out.. no warning just couldn't turn and the light on the dash came on simultaneously. I limped down the mountain at about 10 mph with no power steering. I once again after 30 min or so shut the truck off. Once again when it restarted the power steering works as it should. I'm scared to drive it because it gives no warning before the steering wheele becomes almost impossible to turn. It has since worked on my last two short trips but for how long. And how fast will I be moving the next time it stops working.

Took to garage they analyzed saying battery and IBS sensor should be rep,aced along*with rack steering at a cost over $ 5000.00. So I climb under my truck to check out what they were saying. There wasn’t the corrosion described connections all look good. I went back to garage an had battery changed, greatly improved steering still a little stick no and then when turning. Next I’ll reset IBS sensor and hope this resolves completely. The no warning of failure will definitely cause accidents, lucky it was me driving and not my wife.

On Sunday March 27, 2022 my daughter and I were in my 2017 Ram 1500 Bighorn 5.7 liter Hemi, driving east bound on a major road leading from my neighborhood. I couldn’t control my vehicle at all. All of this happened and then it just went black, no speedometer, no gear shifter, and no steering control!! I want to remind you that I was driving with my child in the truck!! It is now at my local mechanic with the truck completely bricked. No power whatsoever, gear is stuck, and the key fob is stuck in ACC and they cannot get it out. This needs to be investigated asap. If I was in the highway we would have killed ourselves and possibly someone else. I lost all control over my vehicle due to some freak electrical issue Chrysler refuses to fix. Maybe a fat lawsuit will help. If you research the complaints on this vehicle, you will see this is not the first time this has happened. Does someone, or a family, have to die first before you will respond?!! This is on you Chrysler to do the right thing. Recall these trucks ASAP. I swear to you someone is going to die if you do not act now!! I’m a combat veteran who has been in actual combat, and this was one of the most terrifying incidents of my life, mainly because my babygirl was in there with me. I have had 2 incidences with my 2017 Ram. The 1st time it happened, I was driving with my wife and handicapped 33 year old son in the vehicle, and had made a left hand turn on to a fairly busy street near my home. In the midst of my turn, the "Service Power Steering" warning message came on the instrument cluster AND at that point the power steering locked up and basically I had to drive without it! It is extremely dangerous trying to maneuver, but I was able to make WIDE turns and get a few blocks to my home. When arriving home, I immediately called the dealer we bought the truck from and arranged for it to be towed and serviced. I had gone outside to start the truck several times to see if the warning and steering had rectified itself. By the time the tow truck driver arrived (2 hours later) he had me start the truck and it was completely fine! Within the next few days I began to notice an icon on the instrument cluster every time I started the truck of a red steering wheel with an exclamation mark. Even though the truck was driving fine at that point I decided to call the dealer and bring it in for service. They had it for several days and no "code" could be retrieved and it did not happen while they drove it. Fast forward a month or so(9-5-2021), and I was parked in a friends driveway. When I started the truck it happened again. Knowing I had a ways to travel, I started to turn the engine on and off several times. It went away and was fine and has been once again ever since, but the steering wheel icon upon starting the engine is still there. This defect is very concerning to me because of having to transport a handicapped adult! It is terribly dangerous because of the electronic steering going out. The Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system threw a code for a short circuit and the EPS system failed. I lost my power steering while on the road and was unable to safely operate my RAM. The power steering light indicator was on. This problem was serviced at Apple Chrysler Dodge in Hanover PA on July 21 2021, invoice attached, costing me $2653.43. THEN IT HITS RIGHT BACK WITHIN SECONDS IN THE WHOLE VEHICLE ALL THE LIGHTS COME ON EVERYTHING EVERYTHING I'M SO BRIGHT IT ALMOST BLIND YOU AND THEN ALL SUDDEN EVERYTHING CALM DOWN YOU'RE BACK TO NORMAL IN THE PICTURE I SENT IS WHAT THE SCREENS LOOK LIKE AFTERWARDS IT LOOKS LIKE WELL YOU'LL SEE.DOESN'T MATTER WHAT SPEED WHAT AREA ROAD CONDITIONS IT JUST HAPPENS RANDOM INTERVALS. IT'S ABOUT THE SCARIEST THING HAVING YOUR VEHICLE SHUT DOWN AT 60 TO 70 MILES AN HOUR QUITE OFTEN. I'VE TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME CONDITION. IT'S OVER THE THREE YEARS HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. AND THEY DO KNOW THAT IT IS AN ISSUE BECAUSE THEY HAVE AN UPDATE FOR SOME OF THE ISSUES SO THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ALLOWING PEOPLE TO DIE OUT THERE.
