The contact owned a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated while driving at 50 mph and there was a stopped vehicle in the middle of the road, in order to avoid crashing the contact veered to the right lane but crashed into the rear of a truck. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed. The contact sustained neck, shoulder, arm, and chest injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to an impound lot. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 14V047000 (Air bags, Electrical system). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and informed the contact to file for the class action lawsuit. The failure mileage was 90,000.

THE RPMS JUMP AROUND AND THE A/C MAKES NOISE AND LIGHTS FLICKER AT TIMES. THE CAR WILL JUST STALL IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION OR WHEN I'M TURNING ONTO ANOTHER ROAD. IT'S QUITE SCARY WITH CHILDREN IN THE CAR. MY MAIN CONCERN IS A LARGE SUV PUT IT IN REVERSE AND HIT THE FRONT OF MY CAR BEFORE ENDING UP ON THE HOOD NEAR THE WINDSHIELD. SHE WAS GOING PRETTY FAST AND PUSHED MY CAR PRETTY FAR BUT NO AIRBAG! THEN ON A SEPARATE OCCASION I WAS DOING 55 MILES WHEN A LARGE ANIMAL DARTED OUT IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT BETWEEN 70-75MPH WHEN I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND STRUCK THE GUARD CABLE, TRAVELING THROUGH OVER 200 FT OF IT. IN 2012 MY CAR KEY WAS STUCK IN THE IGNITION. THE NEXT DAY AFTER 450.00+ THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE IGNITION CYLINDER. A FEW MONTHS LATER BOTH AIRBAG LIGHTS CAME ON & STAYED ON. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME SINCE IT WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE AIRBAG & SAFETY THERE WOULD NOT BE A CHARGE FOR THE DIANOSTIC; WHEN I ARRIVED I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WOULD BE A 75.00 CHARGE. I LEFT THE DEARSHIP WITHOUT THE TESTING. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER THE OIL WAS CHANGED & I ASKED FOR A TEST TO CHECK THE AIRBAG LIGHT. WHEN FINISHED THE TECH SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE ISSUE WITH THE AIRBAG & I WOULD NEED TO TAKE IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. WE ARE A ONE CAR HOUSEHOLD SO I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL BEING WITHOUT A CAR WOULD HAVE MINIMAL IMPACT. WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THE RECALL I WAITED & HAD THE DEALERSHIP DUE A TEST IN CASE IT WAS SOMETHING AFFECTED BY THE IGNITION CYLINDER. LAST WEEK I TOOK IT TO THE SERVICING DEALERSHIP & ASKED THEY CHECK THE AIRBAG LIGHT. LATER I RECEIVED A CALL ADVISING THE AIRBAG SENSOR HAD SHORTED OUT & A NEW SENSOR WOULD COST 900.00+. I MENTIONED DISABLING THE AIRBAG & WAS TOLD IT IS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW TO DO SO. THE SERVICE TECH SAID IN KS SEAT BELTS ON CARS PURCHASED IN KS ARE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY FOR 10 YRS & 3 YRS FOR AIRBAGS. I SUGGEST THAT CAR CO.'S CONSIDER A LIFETIME OR LIFE OF CAR OWNERSHIP WARRANTY FOR BOTH SEAT BELTS & AIRBAGS. FEW HAVE CLOSE TO 1K TO SPEND ON REPAIRING/REPLACING AN AIRBAG SENSOR & IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO HAVE A LAW STATING THE AIRBAG CAN'T BE DISABLED BUT ITS OKAY TO KNOWINGLY PUT A CAR ON THE STREETS WITH A NON/POTENTIAL NON-WORKING AIRBAG. THE SEATBELTS & AIRBAGS WORK IN TANDAM TO PROTECT SHOULDN'T THEIR WARRANTIES ALSO BE TOGETHER? HAVING SEATBELTS & AIRBAGS COVERED FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR WILL SHOW THE PUBLIC IN LIGHT OF RECENT RECALLS CAR COMPANIES WILL DO WHAT IS NEEDED TO SHOW CONSUMERS THEIR & THEIR PASSENGERS SAFETY ARE A PRIORITY. *JS

THIS WAS NOT LIKE THIS PRIOR TO THE RECALL REPAIRS AND REPRESENTS SLOPPY WORKMANSHIP BY DEALERSHIP EMPLOYEES REPAIRING THE VEHICLE OR POOR DESIGN THAT WON'T STAY TIGHT. BY THIS BEING LOOSE, THERE COULD BE DAMAGE TO THE WIRES OR THE WIRES COULD COME UNPLUGGED INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS WOULD INCLUDE AIR BAG WIRES, KEY SWITCH WIRES, ETC. THERE WOULD ALSO BE A POSSIBILITY OF FIRE IF THIS PROBLEM ISN'T CORRECTED AS THE WIRES COULD SHORT OUT. I HAD THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO PRIOR TO THE RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT. THE AIR BAG LIGHT HAD BEEN GOING ON AND OFF EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. IT WAS FOUND AT THAT TIME THAT A ADD ON PASSIVE KILL SWITCH RELAY HAD BEEN PLACED IN THE AIR BAG RELAY LOCATION. NOT LONG AFTER THE KEY WOULD NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION AND THE CAR COULD NOT BE TURNED OFF WHICH IS WHEN I TOOK IT TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP WHO REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER IGNITION. NOW, THE AIR BAG LIGHT HAS BEEN COMING ON WHILE DRIVING AND THEN GOING OFF AGAIN. IT LOOKS LIKE GM IS STILL SELLING THE FAULTY IGNITIONS. I HAVE RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE. IT SAYS HOWEVER THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE WORKING PARTS WITH NO INDICATION OF WHEN THIS DEADLY PART CAN BE REPLACED. WHAT IS ONE TO DO? #1. KEY. IN 2008 THE KEY STARTED GETTING STUCK IN THE IGNITION WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE CAR OFF. THE CAR KEPT RUNNING. IT WOULD TAKE UP TO 10 TRIES BEFORE THE ENGINE STOPPED. EVEN THEN I COULD NOT ALWAYS GET THE KEY TO COME OUT RIGHT AWAY. I COULD NOT GET THE KEY TO TURN WHEN TRYING TO START THE CAR. THE KEY OFTEN WOULD ALSO GET STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND I COULD NOT GET IT OUT AND WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE IT IN. 2014 I COULD NOT GET IT TO COME OUT AT ALL AND AT ONE POINT THE CAR WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. MECHANIC REPLACED (AT MY EXPENSE) THE IGNITION. #2. WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR AN ADD ON OFFERED WAS A PASSIVE KILL SWITCH CALLED ID SYSTEM. REPEATEDLY THE AIR BAG LIGHT WOULD COME ON, AND THE ON-STAR SYSTEM ALSO NOTIFIED ME. IT WOULD GO BACK OFF. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER IN 2006 AND 2007 WAS TOLD SINCE THE LIGHT WAS NOT ON THEN THAT THEY COULD NOT/WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING. IN 2013 THE LIGHT WAS ALWAYS ON. I WAS ALSO HAVING OTHER ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS (SEE #3). I WENT TO AN AUTO ELECTRICAL SHOP. WHILE DIAGNOSING THE INITIAL PROBLEM THE SHOP FOUND THAT WHEN THE KILL SWITCH WAS PUT IN THE COMPANY HAD TAKEN OUT THE RELAY FOR THE AIR BAG AND PUT THE PUT THE ID SYSTEM RELAY IN IT'S PLACE. THE RESULT WAS THAT NEITHER WORKED. THE SHOP PULLED OUT THE KILL SWITCH RELAY AND REPLACED THE AIR BAG ONE. WHICH I PAID THE BILL FOR. NOW THE AIR BAG LIGHT IS STARTING TO COME BACK ON AT TIMES. I ASSUME THE AIR BAG IS NOT WORKING. #3. IN 2013 THE ALARM ON THE CAR STARTED GOING OFF BY ITS SELF.THAT DAY IT WENT ON AND OFF 5 OR 6 TIMES TILL I REALIZED IT MIGHT BE MY CAR. THE NEIGHBOR SAID THERE WAS NO ONE AROUND IT AT THE TIME. I DON'T TURN ON THE ALARM. I ENDED UP DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SATURN ION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE COULD NOT MANUALLY TURN OFF THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE IGNITION MODULE LOCKED ON ITS OWN. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE IGNITION CYLINDER WAS CORRODED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $400. SHE IS IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THE CYLINDER REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, WHICH MEANT THAT THE AIR BAG WAS INOPERATIVE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE AIR BAG SENSORS AT THE COST OF $800. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD PARTIALLY REIMBURSE HER IN THE AMOUNT OF $398.80. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000.

KEY CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM IGNITION AFTER CAR IS TURNED OFF. HAVE RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM. EACH TIME THEY LUBRICATE THE SYSTEM BUT IT DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. IT BEGAN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND STILL PERSISTS TODAY. WE CANNOT TAKE ANY MORE TIME OFF FROM WORK TO TAKE IT INTO THE SHOP TO BE TOLD THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE IGNITION SYSTEM OR THE TRANSMISSION/GEAR SHIFT MECHANISM THAT MAY BE THE ACTUAL PROBLEM. IN ADDITION, IN THE FIRST 18 MONTHS WE'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE, THE AIR CONDITIONING COOLANT HAS RUN OUT AND THEY CANNOT LOCATE THE LEAK, AND THE SUNROOF BROKE. FINALLY, ON ONE OCCASION THE CAR WENT OVER A BUMP AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH AND THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ACTED AS THOUGH THE CAR HAD A WRECK, CUTTING THE MOTOR AND SHOWING THE AIRBAG HAD DEPLOYED WHEN IT HAD NOT. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, THE CAR STARTED UP JUST FINE WITH NO ADVERSE AFFECTS. THE DEALER SAYS THEY'VE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING AND CAN'T THINK OF HOW/WHY IT HAPPENED. *JB
