The contact stated that after driving the vehicle to his residence and parking the vehicle in the garage, he observed that a puddle of gasoline had accumulated overnight underneath the vehicle from the fuel tank by the driver's side rear wheel. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. WE NOTICED THE SMELL OF GAS AND A PUDDLE OF GAS IN FRONT OF THE REAR TIRE ON THE DRIVER SIDE. I CRAWLED UNDER THE CAR AND LOOKED AT THE GAS LINES. THEY WERE CORRODED VERY BADLY FROM JUST IN FRONT OF THE TIRE ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE GAS TANK. THIS IS WHERE THERE ARE MANY BENDS IN THE PIPELINE WHICH PROBABLY CAUSED THE RUST PROTECTIVE COATING TO FAIL. THE GAS DRIPPED FOR QUITE A WHILE. I HAVE HAD CARS MUCH OLDER THAN THE SATURN WHICH DID NOT CORRODE THE GAS LINES. ONLINE SEARCHING SHOWS THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SATURN ION TO FAIL JUST IN FRONT OF THE REAR DRIVER SIDE. THIS HAS A HIGH POTENTIAL TO CAUSE A FIRE OR POISON SMELLS IF THE CAR WERE PARKED INSIDE. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO FIRE AND IT WAS NOT INSIDE MY GARAGE. I PURCHASED MY 2006 SATURN ION 3 IN 2008 FROM A DEALERSHIP. I HAVE HAD ALL THE RECALL ISSUES HAPPEN TO MY VEHICLE. 1) I HAVE REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND CYLINDER TWICE DUE TO THE CAR BEING UNABLE TO SHUT OFF. THIS HAPPENED IN 2008 AND AGAIN IN 2012. BOTH TIMES IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND REPAIRS WERE DONE BY GM DEALERSHIP. EVEN THOUGH THESE HAVE BEEN REPLACED I WAS TOLD THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE THOSE PARTS ARE FAULTY AS WELL. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS YET AND WILL LET ME KNOW WHEN THEY ARE AVAILABLE. 2) IN NOVEMBER 2013 MY VEHICLE SMELLED OF GAS AND WAS MAKING ME AND MY CHILDREN SICK. I HAD IT CHECKED OUT AT THE DEALERSHIP AND IT WAS THE FUEL MODULE. THIS WAS COVERED BY A NTSB WARRANTY EXTENSION. 3) MY VEHICLE WILL INTERMITTENTLY SHUT OFF OR LOSE POWER STEERING. WHEN I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP IN 2013 THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD NOT TOUCH IT IF THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. IT HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. 4) THIS ISSUE IS NOT MENTIONED IN ANY OF THE COMPLAINTS I HAVE READ HERE, BUT I HAVE SEEN OTHERS COMPLAIN ON THE INTERNET. BEGINNING IN JANUARY OF 2014 THERE IS A STRONG ODOR OF EXHAUST FUMES IN MY VEHICLE. MY PERSONAL MECHANIC SAID THERE IS A LEAK THAT IS GOING INTO THE CABIN. MY VEHICLE IS SLOW TO ACCELERATE AND FEELS SHAKY. THERE IS ALSO A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I HAVE TO DRIVE WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN AT ALL TIMES. RECENTLY, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND STAYED ON WITHOUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BEING PULLED. ALSO, WHEN SHE PUSHED THE SHIFTER KNOB, THERE WAS A NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING. ON MAY 14TH, I PARKED MY VEHICLE AND THE WINDOWS WERE DOWN. WE SMELT A STRONG ORDER OF GAS COMING FROM THE REAR OF MY SATURN. MY FRIEND LAID UNDER THE CAR WITH A FLASH LIGHT AND NOTICED GAS COMING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE FUEL TANK. HE HAD ME BRING IT IN TO HIM ON THE 15TH TO HIS AUTO HOBBY SHOP AND HE PLACED IT ON THE LIFT ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT ALL SIDES OF THE TANK HAVE PRESENCE OF GAS. HE TOLD ME HE NEEDS TO DROP THE TANK BECAUSE HE CAN'T SEE THE DIRECT SOURCE OF WHERE THE GAS IS COMING FROM. I WENT ONLINE AND SAW THAT THERE WAS A RECALL WITH SIMILAR DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS I HAVE NOTICED. WITHIN AN HOUR OF BRINGING THE VEHICLE HOME FROM GETTING THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED ON APRIL 25, 2014, I RECEIVED A FRANTIC CALL FROM MY DAUGHTER, PANICKED SHE HAD JUST BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. SHE STATES SHE WAS DRIVING HOME IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA AND THE CAR STARTED VEERING BACK AND FORTH UNCONTROLLABLY. THE CAR CAREENED INTO THE CURB DAMAGING THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AND TIRE. IT HIT WITH SUCH FORCE, THE VEHICLE RICOCHET BACK INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. MY DAUGHTER THEN SHIFTED IT INTO PARK, TURNED IT OFF AND ATTEMPTED TO EXIT. THE DOORS WOULD NOT OPEN AND COULD NOT BE UNLOCKED, MANUALLY OR WITH THE KEY FOB. 2 MEN DRIVING BY STOPPED AND ATTEMPTED TO HELP HER OUT OF THE VEHICLE, WITH NO LUCK. AS A LAST RESORT, SHE HAD TO BREAK OUT THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT WINDOW TO ESCAPE. I THEN CALLED DAYL GRAVES DEALERSHIP, AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO THEIR DEALERSHIP SO THEY COULD EVALUATE THE VEHICLE. IT IS CURRENTLY STILL AT THEIR DEALERSHIP. THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN HE LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED GAS WAS LEAKING FROM THE TANK. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HIS MECHANIC, WHERE HE WAS INFORMED THE GAS LEAK WAS ABOVE THE GAS TANK. WHEN THE MECHANIC DROPPED THE GAS TANK, IT WAS DISCOVERED THE LEAK WAS COMING FROM THE FUEL PUMP CONNECTOR HOSE. THE REPAIR SHOP REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP WITH A GM PUMP. *JB

WE SMELLED A VERY STRONG FUEL ODOR- VERY PROFOUND, OBVIOUS, CONFIRMED BY TECHNICIAN AT LOCKHART CADILLAC, GREENWOOD, IN. THERE IS A CURRENT RECALL OUT, RECALL NUMBER 09V41900. THIS RECALL IS FOR A FAULTY FUEL PUMP PLASTIC ASSEMBLY THAT CRACKS IN EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURES AND INCLUDES SEVERAL WESTERN AND SOUTHERN OR OTHERWISE TRADITIONAL "HOT WEATHER" STATES. GM KNOWS IT IS A PROBLEM BUT BECAUSE I LIVE IN INDIANA THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR BILL. THE MIDWEST HAS EXPERIENCED ON OF THE HOTTEST SUMMERS ON RECORD WHICH IS WHAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM. I CONTACTED GM AND GAVE THEM MY VIN TO SEE IF MY CAR WAS ONE OF THE AFFECTED. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NOT. I SEE THAT THE RECALL INCLUDES 2006 SATURN IONS IN NORTH CAROLINA, BUT APPARENTLY MY CAR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THE ISSUE WITH MY CAR IS EXACTLY THE SAME LISTED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE DONE MORE RESEARCH AND HAVE FOUND OVER 80 OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER SATURN ION OWNERS STATING THAT THEIR CARS ARE DOING EXACTLY THE SAME THING. BEGAN EXPERIENCING A STRONG ODOR OF RAW GAS AND FUMES IN AUGUST OF 2011. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY TO HAVE THE PROBLEM EVALUATED. UPON RAISING THE VEHICLE AND DOING A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE FUEL SYSTEM, RUN MARKS FROM GASOLINE COULD BE SEEN COMING DOWN FROM THE TOP OF THE TANK. AN EVAP TEST WAS PERFORMED AS WELL AND SMOKE COULD BE SEEN RISING OUT OF THE TANK AREA. THE TANK IS PLASTIC AND NO VISUAL CRACKS COULD BE SEEN. MY TECHNICIAN FELT THIS WAS UNUSUAL AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE. AFTER FURTHER DIGGING THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED A RECALL ON THE FUEL PUMP MODULE FOR MY YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. I WAS ADVISED TO RETURN TO THE DEALER TO SEE IF IT WAS COVERED WHICH I DID. I FOUND OUT THAT MY VEHICLE DID NOT FALL UNDER THE FACTORY RECALL. I RETURNED TO MY REGULAR MECHANIC TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RESOLVED. ONCE THE TANK WAS LOWERED ANOTHER EVAP TEST WAS PERFORMED. THE TEST REVEALED THAT THE FUEL SUPPLY LINES COMING OFF THE FUEL PUMP SENDING UNIT WERE LEAKING. THIS WAS WERE THE TWO HOSES WERE PRESS FITTED TO THE SENDING UNIT FROM THE FACTORY. THE ONLY MEANS OF CORRECTING WAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP MODULE. I HAD THE REPAIR COMPLETED USING AN OE FUEL PUMP MODULE. I FEEL AFTER READING THE PARAMETERS SET FORTH UNDER THIS RECALL THAT MY VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPAIRED UNDER THIS RECALL. I URGE NHTSA TO ONCE AGAIN EVALUATE THIS DEFECT. IN MY OPINION THESE DEFECTIVE PARTS WERE USED ON MORE VEHICLES THAN INITIALLY STATED. THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE AND HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS INJURY. *TR

I WAS PROVIDED WITH A COPY OF THE SPECIAL COVERAGE BULLETIN #09275A ADDRESSING THIS EXACT FAILURE. MY VIN FALLS WITHIN THE PARAMETERS BUT MY LOCATION (VIRGINIA) DOES NOT. THE APPROVED STATES ALL APPEAR TO BE SOUTHERN, HOT, STATES. THE RECENT TEMPS IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA/ DC AREA HAS BEEN VERY HOT OVER THE LAST TWO MONTHS. I TOOK THE CAR TO BE FIXED WHERE AFTER AN INSPECTION OF THE FUEL SYSTEM WHERE A LEAK WAS FOUND COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE TANK, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FINAL COST FOR AN AFTERMARKET PUMP, INITIAL INSPECTION, AND LABOR CAME TO $657 DOLLARS. I HAD A PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION ON THE VEHICLE BEFORE PURCHASING. THE MECHANIC NOTED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL STAIN ON THE TANK, BUT HE BELIEVED IT TO BE INACTIVE AND LEFTOVER FROM POSSIBLE PRIOR WORK DONE ON VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO A CRACK IN THE FUEL TANK LINE. THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE CONTACT HAD CONCERNS OF A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,200 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,595. I HAVE BEEN HAVING STARTING PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR (2006 SATURN ION) AND SMELLING GASOLINE. IT TURNS OUT THE HOSE CONNECTED TO THE FUEL PUMP WAS CRACKED AND LEAKING GAS. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. HE FEELS THAT THE ONE HOSE IS NOT CONNECTED AND HARNESSED PROPERLY AND THE VIBRATION TO THE HOSE EVENTUALLY CAUSED THE CRACK. I GOOGLED "SATURN 2006 ION FUEL LEAK" AND SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE. WHAT IS ALSO THE MAJOR PROBLEM HERE IS THAT THE HOSE IS CONFIGURED WITH THE FUEL PUMP ITSELF. SO, THE ENTIRE MECHANISM HAD TO BE REPLACED. IT COST ME 700.00 FOR A CRACKED HOSE BECAUSE THE FUEL PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED AND MY CAR ONLY IS 46,000 MILES. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. I DROVE FOR 2 WEEKS WITH A CAR THAT WAS LEAKING FUEL. SATURN MUST KNOW ABOUT THIS AND IS WAITING FOR THE SAME SITUATION TO HAPPEN, BUT FOR THE CAR TO BLOW UP INSTEAD. *TR

EMISSIONS LIGHT WOULD COME ON, SMELL OF GASOLINE, CAR WOULD SUDDENLY REDUCE TO HALF POWER WHILE DRIVING. WOULD HAVE TO PULL OVER AND GET OUT, REMOVE THE GAS CAP, LET THE FUMES OUT, AND CAR WOULD RESTORE TO NORMAL POWER. THIS WENT ON FOR A YEAR AND ONE HALF. SATURN AGENCY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. FINALLY SATURN DID SOME SORT OF BYPASS AND PROBLEM CEASED BUT CAR DROVE SLUGGISHLY. FEW MONTHS PASSED WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM.TWO WEEKS AGO STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. THE FUEL PUMP WAS LEAKING AND WAS REPLACED. CAR HAS SIGNIFICANTLY MORE POWER WITH NEW FUEL PUMP HOWEVER THIS WEEK THE EMISSIONS LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND HAS STAYED ON BUT NO LOSS OF POWER EXPERIENCED AS OF YET. AFTER CHECKING HIS VEHICLE AND SPEAKING WITH A TECHNICIAN HE WAS TOLD THE FAILURE OCCURRED FROM HIS FUEL PUMP LEAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HE WENT TO A DEALER TO PURCHASE THE FUEL PUMP. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SATURN ION. THE VEHICLE HAS A VERY STRONG GASOLINE SMELL INSIDE THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND OUTSIDE AS WELL. THERE IS ALSO A FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT IS A MECHANIC AND STATED THAT THE LEAK ORIGINATED FROM THE FUEL TANK. HE IS CONCERNED THAT THE LEAK COULD CAUSE A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD. EVER SINCE THE LEAK OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE NOW HAS TO BE CRANKED FOR A WHILE BEFORE THE ENGINE STARTS. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN TO ANY DEALER; HOWEVER, THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 51,000. PHONE INTERVIEW (AUGUST 4, 09): MR. HORNBACK REPAIRED THE FULE PUMP HIMSELF. HE SAID THAT ONE OF THE NIPPLES ON THE FUEL MODULE HAD CRACKED. MR. HORNBACK INSERTED A BRASS PIPE INTO THE BROKEN NIPPLE AND EPOXY IT IN PLACE. HE AGREED TO EMAIL ME PICTURES OF THE FUEL PUMP MODULE. HE BELIEVES THAT THE CRACKED NIPPLE WAS FOR THE FUEL 'RETURN' SIDE.

TOOK MY 06 SATURN INTO THE DEALER DUE TO STALLING. WAS TOLD BY THE MECH. THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS LEAKING THAT THE PLASTIC ELBOW HAD A CRACK IN IT DUE TO THE ROAD VIBRATION MY CONCERN IS THAT TIS IS A LINE THAT IS UNDER APPOS 20PSI LOCATED ABOVE THE EXHAUST PIPE AND DIRECTLY UNDER THE BACK SEAT. IF GAS IS BEING SPRAYED OUT OVER THE EXHAUST A SPARK IS ALL THAT IS MISSING TO HAVE A ROLLING FLAME THROWER. IN MY SIMPLE MIND THIS PART SHOULD NOT BE PRONE TO CRACKING BECAUSE OF NORMAL DRIVING.
