My 2007 Saturn Ion recently started leaking drops of gasoline near the driver side rear tire. It is either an issue with the fuel line or the tank. It has not been inspected by the dealership yet. I get a gas cap warning message, but I'm not sure if it is related.

My gas tank is leaking a good amount of gas and is dripping all over my exhaust. Major fire risk and also my wiring has been all messed up. When my brights are on, my speakers make an unbearable screaming noise and I saw that this was an issue for many saturn ion users. There was a recall on this car for the same gas tank/pump issue years ago. Can I get this issue fixed free of charge or has the recall expired?

TOOK TO DRAPER CHEVROLET WHO LOCALLY HANDLES SATURN RECALLS AND WAS TOLD THE GAS LINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND NOT COVERED BY SPECIAL CASE SCENARIO. THE REPAIR WAS QUOTED AT $568. REPAIR HAS NOT BEEN MADE. LEAKING FUEL IS AN IMMEDIATE HAZARD IF IN THE PRESENCE OF AN OPEN FLAME OR POSSIBLE ACCIDENTS. IT APPEARS THERE ARE A HUGE NUMBER OF CASES WHERE THE FUEL LINE HAS LEAKED ON THIS MODEL. IT SHOULD BE COVERED.

THE RECALL MENTIONED THAT IT WAS FOR CARS REGISTERED OR SOLD IN THE "HOT" STATES. THE DEALER WOULDN'T EVEN LET MY DAUGHTER DRIVE IT WHILE WAITING FOR PARTS. THIS RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE WIDESPREAD.

AT FIRST I HAD STARTING PROBLEMS. I LOOKED INTO THE IGNITION,SPARK PLUGS,COILS,PLUG WIRES. A G.M. DEALER SAID I HAD A CODE THAT SAID #3 CYLINDER MISFIRE. #3 CYL. SPARK PLUG WAS THE ONLY PLUG THAT WAS NOT RUNNING TO LEAN. AT THAT POINT MY TRANSMISSION STARTED SHIFTING ROUGH. WITH IN ABOUT 1.5 MONTHS THE ENGINE STARTED HARD STARTING. I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER, BOUGHT ONE FROM AUTO ZONE, CRAWLED UNDER CAR AND COULD NOT FIND A FUEL FILTER. MY G.M. DEALER DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. SO I EXPLAINED IT AGAIN. THEY CAME BACK WITH "IT MUST BE IN THE FUEL TANK. I HAVE CHANGED HUNDREDS OF FUEL FILTERS IN MY 50 YEARS OF BEING A MECHANIC. EVERY AUTOMOBILE I HAVE CHANGED THE IN TANK FUEL PUMP HAS HAD A SCREEN TO CATCH THE LARGE PIECES THAT MAY GET IN YOUR TANK, BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN A FUEL FILTER IN TANK. RETURNED CAR 3 DAYS LATER STILL SMELLING FUEL, AND SOUNDED LIKE THEY THREW PARTS ON AND DIDN'T ATTACH THEM. REPLACED FUEL MODULE. RETURNED CAR 1 WEEK LATER STILL SMELLS STRONG FUEL TO BE TOLD THAT FUEL PIPES ARE RUSTED THROUGH AND GAS IS STILL LEAKING FROM THAT. NOT COVERED. THEY NOW WANT $870.03 TO STOP THE REST OF THE FUEL LEAK. ONLY HAVE 61,000 MILES ON IT. HOW MUCH WILL BE PAID TO MY FAMILY WHEN I GET BLOWN UP IN MY CAR FROM THE LEAKING METAL PIPES? I BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT IS BEING OVERLOOKED AND COVERED UP WITH A NONSENSE RECALL OF AN UNASSOCIATED ASPECT OF THE FUEL SYSTEM. FUEL LINES HAVE ROTTED AND BREACHED CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK. THIS LEAK LOCATION IS ON THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, APPROXIMATELY 3 INCHES FROM THE EXHAUST SYSTEM , A CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE. THIS FUEL LINE FAILURE HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED BY THE BRADSHAW AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE DEPT. (864-879-3536), A GM FACTORY DEALERSHIP. BRADSHAW AUTOMOTIVE HAS CONFIRMED THAT THERE IS NOTHING WHICH I OR ANY OTHER OWNER OR OPERATOR OF THIS VEHICLE EITHER DID OR FAILED TO DO WHICH WOULD CAUSE OR CONTRIBUTE TO THIS CATASTROPHIC FUEL LINE FAILURE. EARLY IN 2013, WE NOTED SOME MOISTURE IN THE TRUNK OF THIS VEHICLE. IN LATE MAY, WE HUNG A "DAMP RID" DESICCANT DEVICE IN THE TRUNK AND NOTED THAT THE "DAMP RID" DEVICE RAPIDLY SATURATED WITH MOISTURE AND ALSO FORMED CLUMPS AND/OR CRYSTALS IN THE TRUNK OF THE AUTO. (THE "DAMP RID" IN THE TRUNK WAS SATURATED WITHIN TWO WEEKS, WHEREAS IT TAKES A COUPLE OF MONTHS WHEN HANGING INSIDE A CLOSET IN THE HOUSE 1-888-326-7743). THIS WEEK, I INSERTED A BRAND NEW 9 VOLT BATTERY INTO A KIDDE MODEL NUMBER KN-COEG-3 CARBON MONOXIDE/EXPLOSIVE GAS MONITOR AND PLACED THE MONITOR IN THE TRUNK. WITHIN 24 HOURS, THE MONITOR WAS CHIRPING. THE PEAK LEVEL OF GAS AFTER 24 HOURS IN THE TRUNK OF THE CAR WAS 10. (THIS HOUSEHOLD MONITOR CAN NOT DISCRIMINATE THE PRECISE TYPE OF GAS IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE). TODAY, I OPENED THE TRUNK AND CLEANED EVERYTHING OUT. THE SOURCE OF THE MOISTURE WAS CLEARLY NOTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE INSIDE OF THE TRUNK BECAUSE THE INTERIOR OF THE TRUNK WAS ACTUALLY MUDDY CLOSE TO A ONE WAY FLAPPER VENT/VALVE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE ONE WAY VALVE MEASURES AROUND 4 INCHES HIGH AND 6 INCHES LONG. I AM REPORTING THIS BECAUSE OF THE PROXIMITY TO THE GAS TANK FILLER CAP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, 12 VOLT AC DELCO BATTERY ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IN THE TRUNK, AND AUTO EMISSIONS FROM THIS SATURN AND OTHER CARS. I WAS DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY WHEN I LOST ALL THROTTLE RESPONSE. AFTER INVESTIGATING I FOUND IT HAD TO BE THE FUEL PUMP THAT QUIT. WHEN INVESTIGATING WHY THE FUEL PUMP QUIT AFTER A NEW ONE DID NOT FIX MY PROBLEM, I NOTICED THE WIRES GOT TOO HOT AND BURNED BLACK AND ACTUALLY BURNED THROUGH THE POSITIVE WIRE AT THE CONNECTOR GOING INTO THE FUEL TANK. HOT WIRES AND BURNING WIRES INSIDE A GAS TANK IS NOT A SAFE COMBINATION. TO TOP IT OFF, I HAD TO DRILL THROUGH THE CONNECTOR AND WIRE IN A PIGTAIL CONNECTOR PURCHASED FROM THE DEALER SINCE THEY WOULD NOT SELL ME THE WHOLE FUEL TANK COVER TO REPLACE IT PROPERLY. ONLY AFTER HAGGLING WITH DEALERS THAT WOULD NOT GIVE ME PART NUMBER OR SELL ME THE FUEL TANK COVER THAT THEY FINALLY GAVE ME THE PART NUMBER OF 25815572 BUT IT IS UNDER RESTRICTION TO SELL SO THAT IS WHY THEY SOLD ME THE "BACKYARD MECHANIC FIX". MY WORRY IS STILL THAT I HAVE MY FAMILY TRAVEL IN THE CAR AND I DO NOT WANT THIS THING CATCHING FIRE OR EXPLODING. IS THERE A DEFECT IN THE PART IS WHY IT ALMOST CAUGHT FIRE ON ME? ALONG WITH THIS ISSUE WAS A LOSS OF VACUUM IN THE BRAKE ASSIST CANISTER WHEN IT SAT IN THE DRIVEWAY ? WHEN YOU GOT IN THE CAR THE BRAKE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ROCK-HARD. THERE SHOULD BE 5 ? 10 PUMPS OF VACUUM IN THE CANISTER ON ANY CAR. THIS IS NOTICEABLE IN A STICK SHIFT (IT IS) OR ANY CAR YOU HAVE TO STEP ON THE BRAKE FOR THE INTERLOCKED STARTER. DEALER CHECKED ALSO SAID WAS NORMAL. THEN ABOUT TWO YEARS AFTER THE SMELL OF GAS STOPPED ALTOGETHER AND THE POWER ASSIST SEEMED NORMAL AS THE PEDDLE HAD POWER WHEN THE CAR WAS LEFT TO SIT. ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO THE GAS SMELL STARTED COMING BACK WHEN IT WAS PARKED ? THIS TIME FOR JUST A MINUTE OR SO ? INTERMITTENT. THEN ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO IT STARTED GETTING WORSE ? NOT JUST WHEN THE CAR WAS SHUT OFF BUT NOW GAS ODOR WITH CLOSED WINDOWS AT THE FIRST FEW LIGHTS YOU CAME TO AFTER STARTING THE CAR, WITH WINDOWS SHUT IN COLD WEATHER. NOW THE ODOR IS STRONG, SOMETIMES NAUSEATING AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS. THE BRAKE PEDAL ISSUE ALSO RETURNED IN FEBRUARY ON VERY COLD MORNINGS. I DO NOT KNOW IF A VACUUM LEAK AND A FUEL SMELL ARE RELATED HERE. I CANNOT SEE ANY LEAKING GAS OR SPOTS ON THE PAVEMENT AND I HAVE LOOKED A FEW DOZEN TIMES OVER THE TWO TIME PERIODS THIS PROBLEM(S) HAVE OCCURRED. A VERY STRONG SMELL OF GAS AND NO VISIBLE LEAK. BACK TO MY MECHANIC WHO FIXED IT (AND BY NOW I WAS LEAKING GASOLINE) AND HE ADVISED ME TO CONTACT GM AGAIN AS THE FUEL PUMP WAS CRACKED EXACTLY WHERE THE FUEL PUMP INVOLVED IN THE RECALL WAS. HE GAVE ME THE PART AND I DID CONTACT GM BUT WAS TOLD BY GM THAT THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE RECALL, THAT IT WAS VIN SPECIFIC. TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY I WAS TOLD BY THE PERSON WHO CALLED ME THAT SHE "WANTED TO ASSURE ME THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE, IT'S NOT INVOLVED IN THE RECALL." VEHICLE EXHIBITS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE DESCRIBED BELOW, BUT BECAUSE I DO NOT LIVE IN THESE STATES, MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. I FEAR THAT MY VEHICLE COULD START ON FIRE ANY DAY NOW AND GM WILL NOT CARE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD TO NOT ONLY ME, BUT OTHER DRIVERS AS WELL. A FUEL LEAK IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT I FEEL SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED. GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT AND SATURN ION VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ARIZONA AND NEVADA; AND MODEL YEAR 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT, PONTIAC G5 AND SATURN ION VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, NEVADA AND TEXAS. THE PLASTIC SUPPLY OR RETURN PORT ON THE MODULAR RESERVOIR ASSEMBLY MAY CRACK. IF EITHER OF THESE PORTS DEVELOPS A CRACK, FUEL WILL LEAK FROM THE AREA. 2007 SATURN ION 3 MANUAL SEDAN 1.) FUEL PUMP DELIVERY SYSTEM RECALL AND HAS BEEN REPAIRED AFTER A SERIOUS FUEL LEAK WAS DETECTED. 2.)PURGE FLOW SOLENOID- ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER THE PUMP DELIVERY SYSTEM WAS DETECTED BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED BECAUSE IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL. CAR GETS VERY LITTLE GAS MILEAGE BECAUSE THE FUEL TO OXYGEN RATIO BEING OFF. EVERY TIME I GO TO THE GAS STATION I CANNOT GET MY CAR TO START. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF I HAVE HALF OF A TANK OF GAS OR ALMOST ON EMPTY. IT TAKES SEVERAL TRIES AND ONLY STARTS AFTER I REV THE ENGINE BECAUSE THE FUEL TO OXYGEN RATIO AND THE FUEL PUMP FLOODS MY CAR AS SOON AS THE FUEL PUMP IS ENGAGED. I KNOW THAT AFTER THIS HAPPENS SO MANY TIMES THAT IT WILL CAUSE THE STARTER TO BURN UP IN MY CAR. 3.) IGNITION SWITCH- CANNOT TURN KEY ON AS IF THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED/ CANNOT TURN KEY OFF/ TAKE KEY OUT AND CAR IS STILL RUNNING! DISCONNECT BATTERY TO SHUT THE CAR OFF. 4.) ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING- ACTS AS IF THE POWER STEERING HAS A SHORT. WHILE DRIVING WITH SPEEDS AS LITTLE AS 15MPH IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOR HOOD OR 70MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AND ALL POWER STEERING IS LOST AND BECOMES ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE. AFTER SHUTTING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING THE CAR THE POWER STEERING WORKS BUT SHORTLY AFTER IT FAILS AGAIN. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I DRIVE MY CAR. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS ON AN EXIT RAMP ON THE INTERSTATE WITH A VERY SHARP CURVE. I COULD BARELY CONTROL THE VEHICLE. I DISCOVERED THAT MY CAR HAD A CRACK IN THE FUEL PUMP AFTER SMELLING FUEL AND NOTICING THAT I HAD LOST FUEL. AFTER TAKING IT TO GET LOOKED AT, THE MECHANIC SAID THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. WHEN LOOKED INTO FURTHER, HOWEVER, THE RECALL IS ONLY GOOD FOR CARS MANUFACTURED IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED TO A FEW STATES LOCATED IN THE SOUTH. AFTER RESEARCHING THE RECALL AND READING THE SUMMARIES, THOUGH, MY SCENARIO IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE SUMMARY PROVIDED. MY CAR HAS A TITLE FROM OHIO AND IS CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN OHIO. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT ONLY CARS IN CERTAIN STATES ARE ALLOWED THE RECALL. IF WEATHER IS THE DECIDING FACTOR, OHIO'S WEATHER FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, WHEN THIS PROBLEM STARTED, HAS BEEN HITTING 100 DEGREES. ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO, I STARTED SMELLING GAS EACH TIME I SHUT OFF MY CAR. ON FRIDAY, MY SON NOTICED GAS POURING FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR. MY STEPSON WORKS FOR GMC. HE REMOVED THE TANK AND INFORMED ME LEAKAGE WAS FROM FUEL PUMP. HE ALSO INFORMED ME OF A RECALL RELATED TO THIS MATTER. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THE RECALL WAS VIN SPECIFIC AND MY VEHICLE HAD NO RECALL FOR SAME. I SPOKE WITH GMC AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. I WAS ADVISED TO HAVE DIAGNOSTICS RAN BY LOCAL DEALERSHIP, JEFF WYLER GMC, BUICK, PONTIAC. I WAS TOLD THE COST WOULD BE $93.00 UNTIL I MADE THE APPOINTMENT. THEREAFTER I WAS INFORMED I WOULD BE CHARGED HOURLY AND THE COST WOULD BE MORE THAN $93 IF THE GAS TANK HAD TO BE REMOVED. I COULD HAVE THE CAR FIXED FOR THE COST OF THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE! I WAS FURTHER INFORMED EVEN IF THE ISSUE WITH THE CAR WAS RELATED TO RECALL #090226, GMC WOULD NOT NECESSARILY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COVERING COST OF REPAIRS AS THE RECALL WAS NOT FOR MY CAR. I FURTHER NOTED THAT CARS FROM OTHERS STATES WHERE INCLUDED REGARDLESS; HOWEVER, KENTUCKY AND OHIO WERE NOT INCLUDED. I LIVE IN KY AND PURCHASED THE CAR IN OHIO. I'M NOT SURE WHERE THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED. I UNDERSTAND I MIGHT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE CAR REPAIR AND HAVE NO ISSUES DOING SAME. I JUST WANT A FAIR DETERMINATION AS TO WHETHER MY CAR SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BASED ON CURRENT PROBLEMS AND NOT BASED ON A SPECIFIC VIN NUMBER.
