TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 SATURN L300. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL ODOR COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE MAINTENANCE AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM HAD A LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 03V231000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. VEHICLE: 2002 SATURN L100 WITH 80,800 MILES. DATE: DECEMBER 2013 TO JANUARY 2014 PROBLEM: FOR AT LEAST A MONTH I STARTED SMELLING GASOLINE FUMES COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE REAR AND SIDE AREAS OF VEHICLE AFTER HAVING DRIVEN IT AND STOPPING AND SHUTTING OFF ENGINE. AFTER INSPECTING UNDERNEATH VEHICLE, NO SIGNS OF LEAKING FUEL APPEARED. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE CARS' FUEL SYSTEM, I SUSPECTED THE LEAK WAS OCCURRING ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK AROUND FUEL PUMP OR FUEL LINES. SOLUTION: TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO A MECHANIC TO HAVE FUEL TANK REMOVED TO FIND PROBLEM OF LEAKING FUEL. AFTER IT WAS REMOVED, THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND. THE FUEL PUMP NIPPLE RETURN LINE WAS CRACKED AND BROKEN RESULTING IN LEAKING FUEL DOWN ONTO THE TOP OF THE TANK, CAUSING THE RESULTING FUEL SMELL. TOTAL COST TO REPLACE FUEL PUMP AND LABOR WAS $511.64. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT OR INJURY DUE TO A FIRE OR OTHER POTENTIAL ISSUES. 2002 SATURN L200. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO A STRONG FUEL SMELL IN VEHICLE. *TGW ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE INVOICE, THE DEALER FOUND THE SUPPLY LINE AT THE FRONT OF THE FUEL FILTER LEAKING FUEL. THE FILTER AND SUPPLY LINE WERE REPLACED. HOWEVER, LATER THAT EVENING, THE CONSUMER CONTINUED TO SMELL THE SAME STRONG ODOR OF GAS. THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY AND WAS INFORMED THAT FURTHER REPAIR WAS NEEDED AND IT WOULD REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL COST OF $ 900. THE TECHNICIAN DROPPED THE FUEL TANK AND FOUND FUEL AROUND THE FUEL PUMP AND FUEL WAS COMING OUT OF THE PORES OF THE PLASTIC AT THE TOP PUMP. THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 SATURN L100. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AS ENGINE POWER BEGAN TO REDUCE INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT MERGED TO THE SHOULDER, SHUT OFF AND THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT THEN SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACT AND ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE BRAKES, FUEL FILTER AND FUEL LINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 168,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 168,000.

I AM FOLLOWING UP ON A COMPLAINT WHICH I HAD FILED ABOUT A WEEK AGO. ODI ID NUMBER : 10407378. THE INCIDENT STARTED WITH A GASOLINE SMELL IN AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE REPAIR COST ME $900.00 TO FIX A FAULTY FUEL PUMP AFTER MY MECHANIC HAD PERFORMED A SMOKE TEST AND A PRESSURE TEST OF THE GAS TANK. I HAVE 72,200 MILES ON MY 2002 SATURN L200 SEDAN. I HAVE BEEN READING OTHER COMPLAINTS HERE AND IT IS VERY SAD THAT OUR AMERICAN CAR MANUFACTURERS ARE NOT STEPPING FORWARD TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEMS AND OTHERS. THE FACT THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED OR DIED FROM THIS INCIDENT AND OTHERS IS NO EXCUSE NOT TO ISSUE A RECALL. THIS IS IRRESPONSIBLE AND NEGLIGENT. I OWN A 2002 SATURN L200 WITH ABOUT 74,000 MILES. MY WIFE NOTICED A FAINT GAS SMELL COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. A VISUAL INSPECTION BY MY MECHANIC DIDN'T SHOW MUCH. HOWEVER WITHIN A FEW DAYS THE LEAK HAD GOTTEN MUCH WORSE SO THAT GAS COULD BE SEEN LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE TANK. I HATE TO THINK WHAT WOULD OF HAPPENED IF MY WIFE AND CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR AND THE GAS LEAKED A FEW MORE INCHES TOWARD THE MUFFLER. ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 I HAD THE FUEL PUMP MODULE (PART 22710031) REPLACED AT A COST OF $655.87. I SEE OTHER SATURN OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME DANGEROUS PROBLEM. WHY HAS THIS NOT BE RECALLED? THIS IS MY SECOND COMPLAINT ON THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2002 L200 SERIES SATURN. THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE WHILE DRIVING AND IT IS EVEN STRONGER AFTER PARKING. WHEN I HAVE MY OIL CHANGED THEY TELL ME THE GAS DRIPS DOWN ON THE MUFFLER...THIS IS DEFINITELY A FIRE HAZARD. I KNOW THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME PROBLEM. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW MANY OTHERS WERE REPAIRED WITHOUT FIRST MAKING A COMPLAINT. THIS HAS GOT TO BE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. IF YOU CAN RECALL A CHEVY BECAUSE THE LATCH ON THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOESN'T WORK, THEN THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE A TOP PRIORITY. THE MANUFACTURER COVERED $300 OF THE $650 REPAIR COST. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE FAILURE WAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,394 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 62,100.

I WAS VERY SURPRISED TO SEE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE ABOUT THE SMELL OF GASOLINE IN SATURNS. I TOOK MY CAR TO SATURN OF JOLIET WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED USED IN 2005. IT IS A 2002 L200 SERIES. THEY PUT IT ON THE RACK AND SAID THERE WAS A LEAK AT THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. THEY SAID IT WOULD COST ANYWHERE BETWEEN $500 AND OVER $900 TO REPAIR DEPENDING ON WHERE THE LEAK IS AND WHAT HAS TO BE DONE. I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN LIVING ON DISABILITY SOCIAL SECURITY AND CAN NOT AFFORD SUCH A HIGH REPAIR BILL. WITH ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, I WOULD CERTAINLY THINK IT IS A PROBLEM THAT CALLS FOR A RECALL. THIS MUST BE A DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 SATURN L-SERIES SEDAN. WHEN THE CONTACT DRIVES THE VEHICLE AND PARKS, HE SMELLS GASOLINE. HE CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD, BUT COULD NOT LOCATE ANY LEAKS. HE WALKED TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND THE SMELL OF GASOLINE INTENSIFIED. HE LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE, BUT COULD NOT LOCATE ANY LEAKS. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING 20 MILES IF THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO STATED THAT HE COULD TAKE THE VEHICLE TO BOUNDS AUTOPLEX. WHEN THE CONTACT ARRIVED, THE MECHANIC COULD SMELL THE GASOLINE; HOWEVER, HE COULD NOT LOCATE ANY LEAKS UNDER THE HOOD. THE MANAGER WAS NOTIFIED AND WAS ABLE TO LOCATE A LEAK ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK. THE CONTACT DECIDED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO AMERICAN AUTO, WHERE THEY REMOVED THE FUEL TANK AND IDENTIFIED THE LOCATION OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT IT WOULD COST $800 TO REPLACE THE TANK. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER REGARDING THE FAILURE AND THEY INSTRUCTED HIM TO HAVE THE TANK REASSEMBLED AND THEN BRING THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 88,000.

2002 SATURN L200 52,000 MILES I WAS DRIVING ON THE LOOP HERE IN LUBBOCK GOING ABOUT 65MPH WHEN MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER. MY CAR STARTED GOING VERY SLOW AND THEN CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CAR ALSO LOST POWER STEERING SO I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO GET ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO BE WORKED ON AND HE THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE THE FUEL PUMP. WELL HE CALLED LATER AND SAID IT WAS THE TIMING CHAIN AND IT HAD BROKE. HE WAS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS BECAUSE HE SAID IT SHOULD HAVE OUTLASTED THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE. NOT ONLY DID THIS BREAK, BUT WHEN IT BROKE, IT TORE UP MY ENGINE AS WELL. I THEN DID A SEARCH ON GOOGLE FOR "L200 TIMEING CHAIN" AND IT SEEMS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. NOT ONLY IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM, BUT SATURN WAS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND POSTED A BULLETIN TO THEIR SERVICE CENTERS. *TR
THERE WERE NO SPECIAL EVENTS (ACCIDENTS, UNUSUAL ROAD CONDITIONS, ETC) PRECIPITATING THIS PROBLEM. WE HAVE A 2002 SATURN L200 WITH 75.5K MI.S ON IT. WE HAVE BEEN INCREASINGLY SMELLING GASOLINE ODOR COMING FROM THIS CAR AFTER PARKING IT. I GOT UNDERNEATH THE CAR AND FOUND THAT LIQUID GASOLINE IS COMING FROM ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK AND SOAKING THE SIDES OF THE TANK. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER, THE SERVICE DEPT SEEMED FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID IT IS LIKELY A LEAKING FITTING ON THE FUEL PUMP; REQUIRING A NEW FUEL PUMP $400+. WE OWN AN 2002 FORD F-150 THAT HAD A RECENT RECALL ON A CRUISE CONTROL DEVICE THAT THEY SAID COULD CAUSE A FIRE AFTER ENGINE SHUTDOWN-WE HAD THAT RECALL DONE ALTHOUGH WE HAD NO PROBLEMS. THE GAS LEAK WE ARE HAVING ON OUR SATURN SEEMS MUCH MORE VOLATILE THAN THE FORD'S PROBLEM. THE ODOR HAS BAD ENOUGH THAT WE HAVE BEEN AFRAID TO PARK THE CAR INSIDE OUR GARAGE (NEAR OUR WATER HEATER), BUT NO RECALL. THIS SEEMS LIKE A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD THAT SATURN IS WELL AWARE OF (I FOUND MULTIPLE REFERENCES TO FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS ON THIS MODEL WITH THE 2.2L 4-CYL ENG ON THE INTERNET). ON SEPTEMBER 25, 2006, I TOOK MY 2002 L200 TO SATURN OF THE VALLEY WHERE I HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN OCTOBER, 2001, DUE TO A POSSIBLE FUEL PUMP LINE LEAK THAT HAD BEEN DISCOVERED ON THE PRIOR SATURDAY, 9/23/06, BY THE FIRESTONE FACILITY WHERE I HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE FOR SERVICING BECAUSE I COULD SMELL GAS COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. SATURN OF THE VALLEY DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP LINES WERE LEAKING AND THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AT THE TIME, THE VEHICLE''S MILEAGE WAS 75,202. SATURN OF THE VALLEY AGREED TO COVER THE COST OF THE PART BUT I PAID THE LABOR. PRIOR TO THE ABOVE EVENT, ON JANUARY 30, 2006, MY 2003 L200 WOULD NOT START. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO SATURN OF THE VALLEY WHERE I HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN OCTOBER, 2002. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A FAILED FUEL PUMP THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AT THE TIME, THE VEHICLE''S MILEAGE WAS 58,270. THE TOTAL COST OF REPLACEMENT CAME TO $553.79 INCLUDING PARTS, LABOR AND APPLICABLE TAX. SATURN OF THE VALLEY DID NOT OFFER TO COVER THE COST OF THE PART OR LABOR. SUBSEQUENT TO THIS, I WROTE TO SATURN CUSTOMER SERVICE AND REQUESTED THAT THEY COVER THE COST OF THE PART WITH REGARD TO THE 1/30/06, 2003 L200 FUEL PUMP FAILURE. I EXPLAINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILURE WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT, AS THE SAME PART FAILED ON BOTH OF MY VEHICLES OF THE SAME MODEL, ONE PRODUCTION YEAR APART, PURCHASED NEW AT THE SAME FACILITY, AT RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE. SATURN CORP. DENIES THAT THERE'S A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT ON THIS PART. HOWEVER, SATURN HAS DISCONTINUED PRODUCTION OF THE L SERIES MODEL VEHICLES. THIS IS HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS AND WARRANTS AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE IF A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT IS AT FAULT. *JB

CONSUMER CALLED COMPLAINING ABOUT HAVING FUEL LINE PROBLEMS. FUEL LINE CAME APART AND STARTED SPILLING GAS ALL OVER THE ENGINE. DEALER WAS CONTACTED, AND STATED THAT THEY HAD CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, AND THE MANUFACTURE ADVISED TO CHECK THE FUEL LINE CONNECTION. THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND OR EXPLAIN ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE.*AK
I HAVE A SATURN L-SERIES VEHICLE. RECEIVED A LETTER ABOUT A DEFECT RELATING TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY-FAILURE OF IGNITION CONTROL MODULE THAT MAY CAUSE DETERIORATION IN IDLE QUALITY, REDUCTION IN OVERALL ENGINE POWER AND THE VEHICLE MAY BE HARD TO START.CONTINUED OPERATION AFTER SUCH FAILURE MAY LEAD TO SECONDARY FAILURES OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, OXYGEN SENSOR AND EXHAUST RESONATOR. FAILURE OF RESONATOR FAILURE MAY LEAD TO AN UNDERCAR FIRE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. THE COMPANY STATES IN THE JULY 2003 LETTER, THAT PARTS AVAILABILITY IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO PERFORM REPLACEMENTS AT THIS TIME. PROBLEM: I HAVE HAD THE ABOVE SITUATION TAKE PLACE TWICE SINCE I HAD THE CAR. IT STARTS OUT WITH A ROUGH IDLE ESPECIALLY DURING DAMP AND/OR COLD DAYS. THE POWER OF THE VEHICLE IS EXTREME. IT EITHER SEEMS TO BE GASPING FOR FUEL ETC. OR THE OPPOSITE HAS OCCURRED, WHERE THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO HAVE BURSTS OF UNUSUAL POWER WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY.WHEN THE VEHICLE FINALLY FAILED ON THE TWO OCCASIONS, IT WAS HARD TO START, LOST POWER, THE FUEL DIDN'T SEEM TO GET THROUGH AND THE VEHICLE SHOOK VIOLENTLY.TREVOSE OF SATURN TOOK CARE OF THE REPAIRS AT THAT TIME. I WAS TOLD THAT " THERE IS NO GUARANTEE IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. I WAS TOLD TO THINK ABOUT EXTENDING MY CURRENT EXTENDED WARRANTY, AS IT WON'T BE COVERED IF IT HAPPENS AFTER THE CURRENT WARRSANTY RUNS OUT. SINCE THOSE TWO TIMES, I RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO SATURN IN TREVOSE AGAIN. I STATED THAT THE INITIAL SYMTOMS OF LOST POWER, ROUGH IDLE IN DAMP AND/OR COLD WEATHER WAS TAKING PLACE. BOTH TIMES I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS CHECKED OUT AND NOTHING IS WRONG. I DO NOT FEEL COMFOTRTABLE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. IT HAPPENED TWICE WITHOUT WARNING. EVEN THOUGH CERTAIN SYMPTOMS WERE PRESENT THE TIMES THE FAILURES TOOK PLACE, SATURN DID NOT TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY WHEN MENTIONED TO THEM. SINCE THOSE TWO TIMES, I HAVE PRESENTED THE SYMPTOMS TO THEM, AND THEY ONCE AGAIN TAKE THEM LIGHTLY. I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. *AK
