My low beam headlight started to intermittently go out for a while. Then it went out completely. I go to replace the bulb only to find that the bulb wasn’t the actual issue. The harness, wires, and socket to the bulb were blackened, burnt and melted. So now it all needs to be replaced. I’ve seen on several forums that has happened to so many people that have a car manufactured by GM. The original wiring is not quality enough for the heat and current that goes through there.

WHEN IT RAINS WATER IS LEAKING INTO THE VEHICLE & THROUGHOUT THE 2 YEARS I'VE OWNED IT THE RAIN HAS LEAKED IN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS DESPITE HAVING IT FIXED & CAUSES THE WIRING, LIGHTING & DETRIMENTAL/SAFETY SENSORS & ELECTRICAL PARTS TO BE DAMAGED. I BECAME ESPECIALLY WORRIED WHEN I LEARNED A FRIEND WITH A 2008 GMC ACADIA (IDENTICAL VEHICLE TO SATURN OUTLOOK) IS HAVING THE EXACT SAME WATER ISSUES. WITHIN A MONTH OR 2 OF HAVING THE LEAKING AND DAMAGED FIXED NEW SENSORS GET WET & ISSUES ARISE DUE TO LEAKING IN NEW/DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. I FIRST NOTICED IT LEAKING IN THE FRONT BY THE WINDOWS & SUNROOF & CAUSING THE RADIO SPEAKERS TO QUIT. WITHIN A SHORT WHILE AFTER FIXING IT THE HEADLIGHTS, TAIL LIGHTS & AIR CONDITIONING THEN STARTED CUTTING OUT & NOT WORKING. ONCE AGAIN I HAD THE ISSUE FIXED BUT NOW IT IS LEAKING IN THE DASH WHERE WATER CAN BE HEARD SLOSHING AROUND WHEN TURNING & OCCASIONALLY LEAKS INTO THE FRONT FLOOR BOARD. NOW THE 'STABILITRAK' & TRACTION CONTROL ARE ALL HAVING ISSUES AS WELL AS TRANSMISSION SENSORS MAKING MY CAR UNDRIVABLE AND UNABLE TO SHIFT FROM SECOND GEAR UNTIL THE CAR SITS IN THE SUN OR DRIES OUT FOR A FEW DAYS. THE SPEAKERS ARE ALSO NOT WORKING MAKING THE BACK UP CAM, AND EVEN THE WARNING DASH LIGHTS HAVE NO SOUND. ** AS MENTIONED BEFORE THERE ARE MANY ONLINE FORUMS THAT TALK ABOUT THIS LEAKING ISSUE IN BOTH THE SATURN OUTLOOK & GMC ACADIA'S. IT IS VERY WORRISOME THAT THINGS WILL SEEM TO WORK & SUDDENLY STOP WORKING DUE TO WATER LOG DAMAGE & WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT & HEADLIGHTS/TAIL LIGHTS FLICKER OR QUIT IT IS VERY SCARY & DANGEROUS. THE SERIOUS ISSUES WITH SENSORS (TRANSMISSION SENSORS & STABILITY) JUST BEGAN ON MY CAR RECENTLY & SINCE I'VE HAD THIS ISSUE FIXED SO MANY TIMES IT NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT.

DRIVERS SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT WIRING HARNESS AND PLUG HAVE MELTED AND I HAVE HAD REPLACED AND IT HAPPENS AGAIN. THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON, SAYING SERVICE AIRBAGS NOW. ALL THE SPEAKERS IN THE CAR HAVE QUIT WORKING, BUT IF YOU OPEN AND CLOSE DRIVERS SIDE REAR DOOR THEY WILL WORK UNTIL YOU HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD.

HEADLIGHT BULB KEEPS BLOWING OUT AND SOMETIMES WHEN CHANGED COMES ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY. HAVE CHANGED BULBS NUMEROUS TIMES BUT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. BULBS SEEM EXTREMELY HOT WHEN THEY BLOW. WE HAVE HAD IT REWIRED NUMEROUS TIMES BUT LOOKS LIKE WIRES FROM HARNESS ARE DIFFERENT GAUGES THAN REPLACEMENTS. THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE I NEVER KNOW WHEN I WILL BE WITHOUT A HEADLIGHT. THEY ARE DIM AND EVEN WHEN REPLACED BY SILVERSTAR ULTRA, THEY REMAIN DIMMER THAN MOST VEHICLES. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I CAN SEE THEIR HEADLIGHTS MORE THAN MINE WHEN THEY ARE BEHIND ME. I CANNOT SEE THE ROAD HARDLY AT ALL WHEN DRIVING WITH ONE HEADLIGHT.

PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT SUFFERS FROM INTERMITTENT OPERATION EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE HEADLIGHT BULB WITH A NEW BULB. WHEN IT DOES WORK, THE HEADLIGHT ONLY ILLUMINATES ON THE AUTO SETTING. IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE DRIVER SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT 3 TIMES. IT WENT OUT AGAIN A FEW WEEKS AGO AND I COULDN'T FIND ANYONE TO REPLACE IT FOR ME AT THAT TIME SO I HAD TO DRIVE IT WITHOUT THE LOW BEAM UNTIL TODAY. I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY A MECHANIC FEE TO HAVE IT DONE AND CANNOT DO IT MYSELF. A FRIEND OF MINE SAID HE COULD FIX IT TODAY SO THAT I COULD GO GET THE VEHICLE INSPECTED. ONCE HE WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE BULB AND BEGAN TO TRY TO GET IT OUT THE LIGHT CAME ON. WE WERE SURPRISED BUT DECIDED TO REPLACE IT WITH THE NEW ONE ANYWAY. SO ONCE THE NEW BULB WAS IN I DROVE IT TO A NEARBY INSPECTION SIGHT TO GET THE INSPECTION DONE. I PASSED INSPECTION AND CONTINUED ABOUT MY DAY. WHEN LEAVING WORK TONIGHT I REALIZED THAT THE HEADLIGHT IS OUT AGAIN. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR COSTLY REPAIRS OR TICKETS OVER THIS MATTER AND DON'T FEEL THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO IF THERE IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN THE HEADLIGHTS OR RELATED ITEMS. DRIVING LATE ONE NIGHT WHEN MY LOW BEAM LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING, I WAS LEFT WITH MY HIGH BEAM LIGHTS AND MY FOG LIGHTS ONLY. ENDED UP GETTING PULLED OVER BY A POLICE OFFICER ON MY WAY HOME, WHO ADVISED THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE WIRING IN SIMILAR VEHICLES.AFTER WRITING ME A WARNING, I WENT HOME WITH LITTLE LIGHT FOR DRIVING. WOKE UP THIS MORNING, ATTEMPTED TO CHECK FUSES AND BULBS, NO ISSUES NOTED. CAN SMELL A BURNT WIRE SMELL NEAR HEADLIGHT. DID MY RESEARCH AND APPARENTLY IS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM INDEED. WATER ALSO LEAKS FROM REAR SUNROOF GLASS AND DRIPS FROM THE REAR DOME LIGHT AND LEAKS TO THE 3RD ROW SEATS/REAR COMPARTMENT.

NEAR THE END OF MAY 2012, I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY WHICH SLOPES SLIGHTLY DOWNWARD, AND SUDDENLY WATER STARTED COMING OUT OF THE REAR OVERHEAD LIGHTS. WHEN THE CAR REACHED LEVEL GROUND THE WATER THEN CAME OUT OF THE PASSENGER-SIDE WINDSHIELD PILLAR AND THE SUNROOF AS WELL. I BROUGHT IT TO A GM DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THE SUNROOF DRAIN TUBES WERE CLOGGED. IT COST ME $90.00 TO HAVE THEM CLEAN IT OUT. THE CAR IS NORMALLY GARAGED, HOWEVER WE HAD DRIVEN IT DURING A RAINSTORM THE DAY BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. AFTERWARDS WE STARTED NOTICING SOME CRAZY THINGS HAPPENING TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF THE CAR. SOMETIMES THE RADIO WOULD STAY ON EVEN AFTER THE KEY WAS REMOVED AND OPENING THE DOORS (WHICH NORMALLY WOULD SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN.) SOMETIMES THE FRONT DOOR PANEL SPEAKERS WOULD NOT WORK AT ALL, OR ONE WOULD WORK OR BOTH WOULD WORK. RIGHT NOW THE DRIVERS SIDE IS NOT WORKING. THEN THE DAY AFTER THE CAR WAS OUT IN A TORRENTIAL RAIN STORM SOMETIME NEAR THE END OF FEBRUARY 2014, IT WOULD NOT START AT ALL. IT WAS COMPLETELY DEAD AND I HAD TO CALL AAA TO GET IT STARTED. THE AAA GUY SAID TO CHECK THIS CAR OUT ONLINE FOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, WHICH I DID AND FOUND VOLUMES OF COMPLAINTS STEMMING FROM THIS ISSUE, AS WELL AS SEVERAL GM TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS OR TSB'S AS THEY ARE REFERRED TO. I ONCE AGAIN BROUGHT IT TO THE GM DEALERSHIP WHICH KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE AND REPAIRED IT AT A COST TO ME OF $810.39. GM HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE DIRECTLY, NOR HAS COMPENSATED ANY OF THE CONSUMERS WHO OWN THE VEHICLES THAT ALL HAVE THIS PROBLEM, NAMELY SATURN OUTLOOK, GMC ACADIA AND BUICK ENCLAVE FROM 2008 - 2010. I FEEL THAT IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE AND UNETHICAL FOR THEM TO PASS THIS PROBLEM OFF TO THE CONSUMER. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE AND I WANT TO BE REIMBURSED, AND I'D LIKE THEM TO INSPECT AND REPAIR FOR FREE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AS WELL FOR OTHER DAMAGE. *TR

JAN 2014, TAKE CAR TO GET SAFETY INSPECTED AND GET TOLD THAT PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM IS OUT AND FAILED INSPECTION. FOUND EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS IN APRIL 2010, FRAYED WIRES AND SIGNS OF ELECTRICAL ARCING. *TR

LOW BEAM PASSENGER SIDE LIGHT WENT OUT AND I REPLACED THE LIGHT. TWO WEEKS LATER THE LIGHT WENT OUT AGAIN, I MOVED THE CONNECTOR AND THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. THE LIGHT WORKED FOR TWO WEEKS AND IT WENT OUT AGAIN. I WENT TO CHANGE THE BULB AND IT SMELLED LINE BURNT PLASTIC. I REMOVED THE BULB AND THE CONNECTOR WAS BURNT ON ONE OF THE SIDES. THE WIRE WAS BARELY HANGING ON THE SIDE THE CONNECTOR WAS BURNT. THE WIRE HARNESS SEEMS VERY FLIMSY AND VERY POOR QUALITY. I'M VERY SURPRISED AND DISAPPOINTED OF THE POOR QUALITY OF THE WIRING HARNESS. THIS CAN ALSO POSSIBLY BE A SAFETY HAZARD. *TR

THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL SHOWED NOTHING. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN AT JUPITER CHEVROLET IN DALLAS CHARGED US $770 TO REPAIR A WIRING HARNESS THAT THEY SAID WAS RUINED DUE TO A LEAK IN A DRAINAGE HOSE IN THE SUNROOF AND THAT THIS IS COMMON WITH THIS VEHICLE. LAST NIGHT WHEN I WENT TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE I NOTICED THE LEFT FRONT LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT WAS NOT WORKING. TOOK VEHICLE IN TO HAVE THE LIGHT BULB CHANGED AND THE TECHNICIAN SAID THE BULB SOCKET/WIRING WAS BURNT AND THE BULB WAS DAMAGED. THEY SAID I WOULD NEED A NEW BULB AND LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT WIRING HARNESS. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THIS PART HAS FAILED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW. THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT WENT OUT ON THE VEHICLE. I WENT TO AUTOZONE TO PURCHASE THE HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENT WHEN I WAS TOLD THAT IT COULD POSSIBLY BE TWO DIFFERENT HEADLIGHTS THAT I WOULD NEED TO BRING THE BROKEN ONE SO THEY CAN SELL ME A REPLACEMENT. I FOUND OUT THAT IT IS NOT VERY EASY TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT ON THIS VEHICLE AS SEVERAL OTHER PARTS HAVE TO BE REMOVED IN ORDER TO GET TO THE HEADLIGHT CONNECTOR. I FOUND INSTRUCTIONS AND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS FROM OWNERS INDICATING THEY HAVE REPLACED THE HEADLIGHT SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE YEAR ONLY TO BE TOLD BY DEALERS THAT THE HARNESS/CONNECTOR ARE BURNED AND THAT IS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. I PROCEEDED TO REMOVE THE UNDERLINER OF THE TIRE TO GET TO THE HEADLIGHT ON MY VEHICLE. AS SUSPECTED, THE CONNECTOR AND WIRE HARNESS WERE BURNED. I FOUND SEVERAL SERVICE BULLETINS INSTRUCTING DEALERS TO "CHECK AND REPLACE" THE HARNESS AND HEADLIGHT ON THESE VEHICLES. WHEN I CALLED SATURN I WAS INFORMED THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAD REPLACED THE HEADLIGHT IN MY VEHICLE ON APRIL 2011...HOWEVER THEY NEVER INFORMED ME OF THIS CHANGE. RIGHT NOW MY WIFE IS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE WITHOUT A HEADLIGHT AS SATURN IS REFUSING TO REPLACE THE BURNED HARNESS THAT I FOUND ON THE CAR. AT APPROXIMATELY 35000 MILES, THE PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLAMP STOPPED LIGHTING. I ASSUMED THAT THE HEADLAMP HAD BLOWN, AND LEFT IT ALONE UNTIL MY STATE INSPECTION WAS DUE, 2 MONTHS LATER. WHEN I FINALLY ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE BULB, I LEARNED THAT THE BULB WAS FINE, BUT THE HARNESS HAD FAILED, AND MY 36000 MILE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED.CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLAMP HAD MELTED, WHERE THE WIRES ENTER INTO THE LAMP BASE, AND ARE HELD INTO THE BASE WITH A POURED PLASTIC "BACKLIGHT" TYPE SEALER, LIKE THE TYPE SEEN POURED OVER CIRCUIT BOARDS, TO PREVENT TAMPERING. I ACCESSED THAT SOCKET, AND CUT THE FACTORY SOCKET OFF OF THE WIRE HARNESS. I REPLACED THE SOCKET WITH ONE THAT I PURCHASED ONLINE, WHICH WAS OF A MUCH HEAVIER GAUGE THAN THE INFERIOR GAUGE OF WIRE THAT CAME FROM THE FACTORY. IT IS NOW 1 YEAR LATER, AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAS OCCURRED ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. WHEN I HOLD THE FACTORY LAMP SOCKET IN MY HAND, AND BEND THE WIRES AT THE SOCKET BASE, THE BULB WORKS ONLY INTERMITTENTLY, AS IF THE COPPER WIRE INSIDE THE INSULATION HAS DEGRADED SO SEVERELY THAT A GOOD CONTACT CAN NO LONGER BE MAINTAINED. I HAVE NOT YET ORDERED A REPLACEMENT SOCKET FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE, AND DREAD THE LABOR THAT IS INVOLVED IN REMOVING THE TIRE, DROPPING THE FENDER COWL, CUTTING THE FACTORY HARNESS AWAY FROM THE FACTORY LAMP BASE, AND REWIRING THE NEW LAMP BASE TO THE FACTORY HARNESS.IT IS LABOR INTENSIVE, AND IT IS DANGEROUS. IT IS CLEAR TO ME THAT THE HEAT BUILD UP FROM THE BULB, IN COMBINATION WITH THE UNDERSIZED WIRING ENTERING THE BASE, HAS CREATED A MELT HAZARD, WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY ALLOWS MOISTURE INTO THE COPPER STRAND WIRE, ALLOWING THE COPPER TO CORRODE SIGNIFICANTLY, AND ULTIMATELY THE COPPER DISINTEGRATES COMPLETELY, LOSING ITS CONNECTION ALTOGETHER. *TR

THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME IN THE EARLY EVENING, REDUCING MY VISABILITY AND THE ABILITY FOR OTHERS TO SEE MY VEHICLE. ON 8/26/2011, I REPLACED MY DRIVERS SIDE HEADLIGHT BULB AND NOTICED A BURNT WIRE SMELL BUT DID NOT NOTICE ANYTHING VISUALLY, APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH LATER I NOTICED THAT MY LIGHT WAS OUT AGAIN THE NEXT DAY I BOUGHT A NEW BULB. I STARTED THE PROCESS OF CHANGING OUT THE BULB BUT NOTICED IT WAS BACK ON SO I STOPPED. ALL REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENT COST WERE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND I HAD TO PAY FOR ALL OUT OF POCKET COSTS. ON OCTOBER 3RD PASSENGER SIDE HARNESS BURNED OUT AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 100,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

MY HEADLIGHT BURNED OUT ON MY 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK. I TRIED TO REPLACE IT AND IT STILL DIDN'T WORK. I HAD A SHOP REPLACE IT THINKING THAT I TOUCHED THE BULB AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SOCKET/HARNESS WAS MELTED AND SOME OF THE WIRES BEYOND THAT WERE EXPOSED. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY AND WAS TOLD THAT EVEN IF FIXED, WOULD HAPPEN OVER AND OVER BECAUSE THE BULB IS TOO HOT AND MELTS THE WIRING. I THINK THIS IS A DESIGN ISSUE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF CLAIMS OF THIS HAPPENING EXACTLY THE SAME WAY SO IT IS A DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD BE DEALT WITH BY GM. I HAVE SINCE GOTTEN PULLED OVER AND ISSUED A CITATION FOR NO HEADLIGHT BUT DON'T HAVE THE OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY TO REPLACE ALL COMPONENTS AND PAY LABOR CHARGES OF 1.6 HOURS PLUS. THIS IS DANGEROUS DUE TO LOSS OF HEADLIGHTS FOR VISIBILITY, INTERMITTENT WORKING OF HEADLIGHTS, WHICH IF BOTH WENT OUT COULD LEAVE ME STRANDED WITH FOUR KIDS, AND THE EXPOSED WIRE COULD CAUSE AN ENGINE FIRE OR SHORT THAT COULD DAMAGE OTHER COMPONENTS OR THE WHOLE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE THAT OCCURRED IN MY 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK WAS A FAULTY DRIVER'S SIDE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE HEADLIGHT, WHICH RESULTED IN THE LOWBEAM HEADLIGHT BEING INOPERABLE. THIS OCCURRED ON MAY 8TH, 2011 AND WAS CONTINUOUS. I HAD THE WIRING HARNESS REPLACED AT MY COST DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUE OF ONLY DRIVING WITH ONE WORKING HEADLIGHT AT NIGHT AS WELL AS THE FACT IT'S AGAINST THE LAW IN THE STATE OF OHIO. ADDITIONALLY, I WAS TRAVELING TO CANADA AND DID NOT WANT TO RISK THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH OR COLLISION WITH AN ANIMAL DUE TO THE FAULTY LIGHT. I HAVE A 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK XR. THERE ARE NOW OVER 150 COMPLAINTS FILED WITH THE NHTSA REGARDING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND FAILURE OF THE LOW BEAM LIGHTS ON BOTH SIDES. MY PASSENGER SIDE FAILED AND WHEN REPAIRS WERE STARTED THE GM REPAIR SHOP NOTED THE WIRING HARNESS WHERE THE BULB IS INSERTED WAS BURNED (MELTED AND BLACKENED) AS IS THE CASE IN ALL THE COMPLAINTS I REVIEWED. GM ISSUED A TSB IN MAY 2009 ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM (TSB# 09-08-42-004) WHICH INCLUDED FILLING THE CONNECTOR CAVITY WITH NYOGEL GREASE AFTER REMOVING AND REPLACING THE HARNESS. MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY WITH JUST OVER 41,000 MILES. THE GM SHOP ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THEY HAVE SEEN OTHER VEHICLES IN THIS MODEL LINE WITH THE SAME FAILURE. HOWEVER THEY HAD NO DIRECTIONS TO COVER THE REPAIRS SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT I CALL GM CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE. THAT CALL RESULTED IN AN APPARENT LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM IN SPITE OF THE NUMEROUS NHTSA COMPLAINTS AND INTERNET DISCUSSIONS REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD A FAILURE OCCUR WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. I CAN ALSO EXPECT THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE WILL ALSO FAIL WHICH WILL RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL REPAIR COST BEYOND JUST REPLACING A BURNED OUT BULB. *TR

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK. THE CONTACT ENTERED THE VEHICLE AND WAS UNABLE TO ACTIVATE THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT PASSENGER SIDE. THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WOULD FUNCTION BUT NOT THE LOW BEAMS. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS WAS MELTED. THE WIRING HARNESSES WAS REPLACED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,000. *TR THE CONSUMER RECEIVED AN AIR BAG RECALL NOTICE. EVEN THOUGH THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS NOT ON, THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ANYWAY. SIX MONTHS LATER, THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED. MY PASSENGER LIGHT WENT OUT SO I FIGURED I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE BULB. THE NEXT NIGHT IT WAS WORKING AGAIN. IT WORKED FOR ABOUT TWO DAYS AND WENT OUT AGAIN SO I FIGURED THERE WAS A SHORT. I GOT INTO THE LIGHT FIXTURE AND LOOKED AT THE BULB AND IT LOOKED GOOD BUT I PULLED THE LIGHT OUT ANYWAYS TO CHANGE FOR NEW SINCE I WAS IN THERE ALREADY. TO MY SURPRISE THE FIXTURE HOLDING THE LAMP WAS COMPLETELY MELTED AND LOOKED LIKE THERE WAS ARCHING TO IT WITH THE PLASTIC MELTED ALL AROUND IT. PLUS SOME CORROSION ON SOME OF THE WIRES. I WORK FOR THE AIR FORCE ON F16'S SO I KNOW ALOT ABOUT THE CORROSION AND THE WAY IT LOOKS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT LOOKS FROM SEARCHING THE WEB HAPPENS IN A LOT OF THESE VEHICLES. UPON NOTICING A HEADLIGHT OUT ON MY WIFE'S 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK, IT WAS NOTED UPON DISASSEMBLY OF THE HEADLIGHT THAT THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT MELTING DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS TO THE PASSENGER SIDE HID HEADLIGHT FIXTURE. THE WIRING HARNESS WAS CHARRED AND BLACKENED IN THE AREA OF THE HEADLIGHT CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY. IT APPEARS THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT HEAT/ARCING DURING THE FAILURE EVENT. THE DAMAGED WIRING HARNESS CAUSED THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT TO BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL. THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 50000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS THE FIRST SUCH FAILURE FOR THIS VEHICLE, HOWEVER, UPON READING VARIOUS ONLINE POSTINGS ABOUT THIS MATTER, IT APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON FAILURE MODE IN THESE MODEL VEHICLES. THE HEADLIGHT WIRING HARNESS ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN REPLACED, ALONG WITH THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY DUE TO HEAT DAMAGE TO THE HEADLIGHT LAMP WIRING CONNECTOR. 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK, PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT IS ON AGAIN, OFF AGAIN. I REPLACED THE LIGHT BULB, AND USED THE CORRECT "BULB GREASE" IN THE SOCKET, BUT THE WIRE HARNESS THAT POWERS THE LIGHT BULB LOOKS TO BE TOO LIGHT IN GAUGE TO POWER THE HEADLIGHT. THE BULB WILL LIGHT SOMETIMES, BUT THEN GO OUT FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME, INDICATING A SHORT SOMEWHERE IN THE WIRING HARNESS. THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT THE HEADLIGHT IS OUT HAS INCREASED INCREMENTALLY OVER TIME. THE PROBLEM BEGAN ABOUT 7 MONTHS AGO, WHILE THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 34000 MILES ON IT, AND I HAD ASSUMED IT WAS A FAULTY LIGHT BULB. I NOW HAVE OVER 39000 MILES ON THE TRUCK, AND AM READING OF A SIMILAR PROBLEM THAT OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE ARE EXPERIENCING. I AM AFRAID THAT IF I BEGIN EXPERIENCING THE SAME LIGHT FAILURE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, I WILL LOSE ALL VISIBILITY AT NIGHT. HAVE REPLACED PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT BULB 3 TIMES IN TWO YEARS. AFTER LAST REPLACEMENT LASTED TWO DAYS I GOT UP INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY (AN ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TASK) TO SEE THAT THE WIRING INSIDE THE SOCKET WAS MELTED AND BURNT AWAY. I SUSPECT THAT THE WIRE SHIELDING LEADING TO THE SOCKET WAS NEVER THERE, FROM THE FACTORY. IT APPEARED THAT THE WIRE WAS LEFT UNSHIELDED AND ARCD OUT AGAINST THE METAL SOCKET RETAINER. THE PLASTIC COMPONENTS ARE ALL BUT MELTED AWAY FROM THIS GROUNDING. I WENT TO THE GM DEALER I MADE PURCHASE FROM AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS A "SERVICE ADVISORY", BUT NO RECALL. FURTHER, I'VE WAS TOLD THAT THEY ARE SEEING "A TON" OF THESE. I WAS TOLD OF DISASSEMBLY OF THE FRONT END TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. LASTLY, THE COST MIGHT EXCEED $300. THIS IS AN UNREASONABLE EXPENSE FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE AS SIMPLE AS CHANGING A BULB. I AM LEFT WITH NO RECOURSE BUT TO ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE WIRING MYSELF WITH THE BEST PARTS I CAN FIND. I CAN ONLY WONDER WHAT THE OTHER HEADLIGHT IS DOING UNDER THERE. I FEAR THAT THE FIRE HAZARD IS REAL AND TANGIBLE. I HAD UNDERSTOOD THAT SATURN'S REPUTATION WAS OUTSTANDING FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SUPERIOR PRODUCT ENGINEERING. BUT WE LOYAL SATURN OWNERS SEEM TO BE ON OUR OWN NOW. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON, THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF ILLUMINATION IN THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE WIRING OF THE CABLE HARNESS MELTED. THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT AND CABLE HARNESS WERE REPLACED. THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT FAILED AGAIN ON A DIFFERENT OCCASION AND WAS REPLACED AT THE DEALER. THE PRIOR REPAIRS WERE COVERED UNDER THE SERVICE WARRANTY. IN ADDITION, THE PASSENGER'S SIDE HEAD LIGHT AND CABLE HARNESS WERE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 30,000. I HAVE A 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK XR AND THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT HEADLIGHT HARNESS MELTED DUE TO OVERHEATING LIKELY CAUSED BY THE VERY SMALL GAUGE OF WIRE THEY USED IN THIS HARNESS. THIS OCCURRED ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 38000 MILES ON IT. I PURCHASED THE PART FROM THE DEALER, WHICH HAD A LARGER GAUGE WIRE, AND CRIMPED IT INTO PLACE. THIS WAS VERY DIFFICULT BECAUSE THERE IS LITTLE TO NO ROOM AROUND THE HEADLIGHT. MOST INTERNET FORUMS SUGGESTED THAT THE ENTIRE FRONT BUMPER MUST BE REMOVED FOR THIS FIX. IT CAUSED US TO NOT BE ABLE TO SAFELY OR LEGALLY DRIVE AT NIGHT. 2B. THE TRANSMISSION OFTEN DOES NOT ENGAGE, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ARE STOPPED AND THEN TRY TO CROSS TRAFFIC TO TURN LEFT. THIS HAS CAUSED SEVERAL NEAR MISSES AND ONE MINOR ACCIDENT FOR US. IT USUALLY OCCURS WHEN WE ARE STOPPED AND NEEDING TO SPEED UP TO MERGE OR CROSS TRAFFIC. 3A. I OWN A 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK, WHICH I PURCHASED NEW IN AUGUST OF 2007. IN FEBRUARY OF 2010, I NOTICED MY RIGHT LOW-BEAM HEADLIGHT/DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT WAS OUT. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL SATURN SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE HAD BEEN "SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE WIRING HARNESS" AND I SHOULD BRING IT IN FOR A REPLACEMENT HARNESS, SINCE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, WHICH I DID. IN APRIL 2010, THE LEFT LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT/DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT WENT OUT. I AGAIN CONTACTED SATURN AND ASKED IF, ASSUMING THIS WAS THE SAME PROBLEM, IT WOULD BE COVERED BY WARRANTY, SINCE THEY HAD ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT A PROBLEM EXISTED WITH THIS HARNESS (THE VEHICLE WAS ABOUT 2,000 MILES OVER WARRANTY BY THIS TIME). I WAS TOLD THAT, SINCE THERE HAD BEEN NO RECALL, IT WOULD NOT BE A WARRANTY ITEM, AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS MYSELF. SINCE THE SATURN DEALER IS ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY, AND IT WAS NOT GOING TO BE COVERED BY WARRANTY, I OPTED TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AT A SHOP MUCH CLOSER TO HOME. AFTER DETERMINING THAT THE BULB WAS FUNCTIONAL, THEY ORDERED A NEW WIRING HARNESS, AND INSTALLED IT IN LESS THAN AN HOUR (TO THE TUNE OF $171.44). I ASKED TO SEE THE OLD HARNESS, AND UPON INSPECTION, I OBSERVED THAT THE HOUSING AROUND ONE OF THE CONNECTION POINTS WAS CLEARLY BURNT AND MELTED. I HAVE HEARD OF NUMEROUS OTHER REPORTS OF THIS FAILURE, MUCH LIKE THE RECALLED WIRING HARNESS FOR THE HEATED WINDSHIELD WIPERS. MY VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN WELL CARED FOR AND SERVICED ACCORDINGLY. STARTING JAN. 31, 2010, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE A LOUD KNOCK. IT DID NOT MATTER IF I WARMED THE VEHICLE, OR IF IT WAS WARM WEATHER OR COLD. ON SOME INSTANCES IT SEEMED TO NOT ACCELERATE ON THE HIGHWAY AS IT SHOULD. OFTEN HESITATING TO "GO". IT HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS, FOR A TOTAL OF 21 DAYS OUT-OF-SERVICE CUMULATIVELY, SOON TO BE MORE. THE FIRST TIME THEY GAVE IT BACK THE NEXT DAY AS THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE NOISE. THREE DAYS LATER THE KNOCK WAS BACK. THE SECOND TIME IT WENT IN THEY HAD FOR 7 DAYS, COULD NOT DUPLICATE. 2 DAYS LATER BACK AGAIN...THE THIRD TIME THE DEALERSHIP LOCALLY HERE PUT A NEW TIMING CHAIN IN. THEY SAID IT WAS "SLACK". SATURN OUTLOOK XR HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT WHEN WIRE ON LEFT FRONT HEADLIGHT MELTED WIRING.. THIS HAPPENED IN JANUARY 2010 WHEN THE RIGHT FRONT WENT OUT AND MELTED THE WIRING. COST TO REPLACE THE ONE IN JANUARY $640.00 AND WAS TOLD TODAY TO REPLACE THE LEFT FRONT WILL BE $750.00. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SATURN OUTLOOK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON INSPECTION, HE NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER FRONT HEAD LAMP WAS INOPERATIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, AND A TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT WIRING HARNESS HAD MELTED AND CAUSED THE BULB TO FAIL. HE THEN ADDED THAT THE OTHER HEAD LAMP WOULD SOON FAIL.
