Saturn Sl Years to Avoid
The 1995 Saturn SL is the worst year to avoid, with elevated complaints about engine and transmission issues. The 1991-1998 models with the single-cam engine experienced more problems than dual-cam variants. Head gasket failures and oil consumption were common complaints across early years. The manual transmission was generally reliable, but automatic transmissions experienced premature failures in some examples. Coolant temperature sensor failures caused starting and running problems.
Best Saturn Sl Years
The 1991 model year represents Saturn's ambitious launch, with simple and maintainable mechanical systems. The 2000-2002 models benefit from years of refinement and improved build quality. The SL2 with the dual-overhead-cam engine offers better performance and reliability than the single-cam SL1. Look for examples that have been well-maintained by single owners.
