I am writing to report significant safety concerns regarding my 2008 Scion [include model, e.g., tC or xB]. After purchasing the vehicle, I discovered multiple serious mechanical and structural defects that make the car unsafe to operate on public roads. 1. Suspension/Struts – The struts are severely worn and are causing premature and uneven tire wear. This creates a major risk of tire blowout or loss of control while driving. 2. Motor Mount – The engine mount is missing screws and bolts, which results in excessive engine movement. This could lead to engine damage or failure while in motion. 3. Alignment – The vehicle’s alignment is completely off, causing the car to pull while driving and further worsening tire wear and handling. 4. Brakes and Rotors – The brakes are nearly nonfunctional, and the rotors are warped and damaged, severely reducing stopping power and increasing the risk of a crash. 5. License Plate Mount – The vehicle has no designated place to mount a rear tag/license plate, which makes it illegal to drive and difficult to comply with state requirements. 6. Missing Headlight – One headlight is entirely missing, significantly reducing visibility at night and making the vehicle a danger to myself and others Fuel System – The fuel system is contaminated and requires flushing. This is causing performance issues, engine hesitation, and raises concerns about potential engine damage or stalling. I have been quoted over $2,500 in repairs just to bring the vehicle to a safe operating condition by 4 mechanics I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether these issues represent a pattern of neglect, safety violations, or improper sales practices, especially if other owners have reported similar problems. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS BURNING OIL EXCESSIVELY WITHOUT WARNING. THE OIL HAD TO BE REPLACED THREE TO FOUR TIMES AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
I JUST PURCHASED MY SCION XB IN JANUARY 2019 AND WITHIN THREE WEEKS I HAD THE OIL LIGHT FLASHING SO I TOOK IT TO GET AN OIL CHANGE AT MIDTOWN TOYOTA IN CHICAGO. WITHIN A FEW WEEKS I NOTICED THAT MY OIL LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AGAIN SO I CHECKED MOTOR OIL AND CAME TO FIND OUT THAT I DIDN'T HAVE ANY OIL. I CALLED MIDTOWN TOYOTA WHERE I HAD MY CAR SERVICED AND ASKED HIM IF MY VEHICLE HAD A RECALL AS FAR AS THE OIL PROBLEM THAT I WAS HAVING? HE SAID YES THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE, HOWEVER THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED IN JANUARY 2018. NOW I'VE HAD THE CAR. NOW I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR TWO MONTHS WHICH I'M FINANCING AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT I WILL HAVE TO PAY OUT-OF-POCKET FOR THIS CAR TO GET THAT RECALL FIXED. I DO NOT FEEL THAT IT'S FAIR FOR ANY DEALER I DO NOT FEEL THAT IT'S FAIR FOR ANY DEALERSHIP TO SELL A VEHICLE THAT HAS RECALLS AND THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TAKEN CARE OF BY THE PREVIOUS OWNERS IN THE PAST. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT TOYOTA CAN DO FOR ME TO GET THIS RE-CAR FIXED FREE OF CHARGE AS I AM DONE NEW OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE?
ON 1/11/19 I TOOK MY 2008 SCION XB TO TOYOTA ONE OF OAKLAND FOR 150,000 MILE SERVICE (MY MILEAGE WAS 104,809 AT THE TIME.) AT THE APPOINTMENT, I EXPLAINED I NOTICED MY CAR USING MORE OIL THAN USUAL. I HAD THE 100,000 MILE SERVICE COMPLETED ON 8/10/18 AND NOTICED I HAD TO ADD ADDITIONAL OIL TO THE ENGINE SINCE THEN, APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 4 QUARTS. THE WEEKEND OF 11/11/18, I NOTICED THE OIL WAS LOW WHEN I CHECKED THE LEVEL, BUT THE OIL LIGHT NEVER CAME ON TO NOTIFY ME. THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT TOYOTA HAD AN EXCESSIVE OIL EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH EXPIRED LAST YEAR AND ASKED ME IF I WAS NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA. I HAD NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. I HAD BEEN NOTIFIED SEVERAL TIMES BY MAIL AND EVEN A PHONE CALL REGARDING THE TAKATA AIR BAG RECALL AND THE TRD BRAKE KIT RECALL BUT NEVER ABOUT THE EXCESSIVE OIL ISSUE UNTIL TOLD BY THE TECHNICIAN. THE TECHNICIAN SUGGESTED I CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND MAYBE THEY WOULD OFFER SOME CONSIDERATION SINCE I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA. I CALLED AND SPOKE WITH TWO REPRESENTATIVES, BOTH VERY NICE BUT WOULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE EXCESSIVE OIL EXTENDED WARRANTY, SINCE I HAD NO ISSUES UNTIL NOW AND THE WARRANTY WAS OVER. I REVIEWED THE TOYOTA WEBSITE AT HTTPS://WWW.TOYOHEADQUARTERS.COM AND FOUND A LETTER THAT HAD ALLEGEDLY BEEN SENT OUT TO ALL OWNERS OF VEHICLES WITH EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUES. I NEVER RECEIVED THIS LETTER. I ALSO FOUND THE TOYOTA EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT DATING BACK TO 2011 AND THEY HAD ISSUED A TSB WHICH AGAIN I NEVER HEARD ABOUT UNTIL NOW. I HAVE CONSISTENTLY BEEN TAKING MY SCION TO TOYOTA FOR REGULAR SERVICES AND NEVER WAS IT REPORTED TO ME. HAD I KNOWN EXCESSIVE OIL WAS AN ISSUE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ALERTED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE OIL LEVEL IN MY CAR. SINCE THE OIL LIGHT NEVER WENT OFF, I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG MY CAR HAS BEEN NEEDING MORE OIL.

MY SCION XB 2008 MODEL WAS RECALLED A COUPLE YEARS AGO FOR EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. AND I WENT TWICE FOR SERVICE AT THE TOYOTA OF NAPERVILLE, I WAS TOLD TO COME BACK AFTER A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MILES TRAVELED, SO THAT THEY COULD RECALL THE CAR THAT OBVIOUSLY HAD A PROBLEM WITH CONSUMING OIL. THIS WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO APPEASE DUE TO THE DISTANCE OF MY WORK FROM MY HOME. I HAVE TO TRAVEL 30 MILES A DAY. I HAVE BEEN REJECTED DUE TO THAT, BECAUSE I WAS OVER ABOUT 11-13 MILES EACH TIME. IN CONSEQUENCE OF THOSE EVENTS, I PUT OIL IN THE CAR EVERY WEEK SO THAT I COULD KEEP THE ENGINE RUNNING. DESPITE MY EFFORTS, THE ENGINE SEIZED RIGHT AFTER I PAID OFF THE CAR. I FEEL LIKE I WAS SWINDLED BY THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE LEAST THEY CAN DO IS REPLACE MY ENGINE. I NEED A CAR TO MAKE IT TO WORK TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY OF 5 AND THE WAY TOYOTA HAS TREATED MY ISSUE HAS BEEN UNSATISFACTORY AT BEST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.

WE ARE VICTIMS OF THE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE TOYOTA WAS HAVING WITH CERTAIN MODELS. WE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM UNTIL WE WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP COMPLAINING ABOUT LOW OIL AFTER WE HAD TO PUT OIL IN THE CAR AFTER WE HAD AN OIL CHANGE DONE. WE THEN FIGURED OUT THIS ISSUE HAD BEEN OUTSTANDING FOR YEARS BUT WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT THE ISSUE. WE CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY EXPLAIN THE WARRANTY EXPIRED LAST MONTH AND THEY WOULD NOT HELP US OUT AT ALL. HOW COULD THEY ABANDON A CUSTOMER WHEN A KNOWN ISSUE HAS OCCURRED. WE WERE TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT SEVERAL CARS HAD COME IN WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND THAT IT WAS COMMON. HOW COULD TOYOTA GET AWAY WITH A FAULTY PRODUCT AND NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. THEY HAVE LOST MY SUPPORT SINCE THEY WILL NOT SUPPORT ME. WE NOW HAVE A CAR THAT IS NOT WORTH ANYTHING BECAUSE OF THE COST OF REPAIRS. THIS FINANCIALLY SETS US BACK AND WILL NOW PUT MY FAMILY INTO A FINANCIAL BIND SINCE WE ARE FORCED INTO LOOKING FOR ANOTHER RELIABLE CAR TO COMMUTE TO WORK IN. THANKS FOR NOTHING TOYOTA.

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. QUALIFIED FOR WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT. OIL CONSUMPTION TEST CONDUCTED THROUGH DEALERSHIPS IS RIGGED. I HAVE CHARGED THE OIL USAGE IN MY CAR FOR OVER 24 MONTHS AND IT BURNS THROUGH IN EXCESS OF A QUART EVERY 800 - 900 MILES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SCION XB. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC LOT WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE ENGINE, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO FAIL. THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 151,000.

OIL CONSUMPTION. EVER SINCE THIS VEHICLE WAS NEW I HAD TO ADD OIL SEVERAL TIMES IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. WHICH I THOUGH WAS "ODD" BUT WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA ABOUT IT THEY TOLD ME IT WAS NORMAL FOR MY CAR TO CONSUME OIL. GOT A LETTER CALLED WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM SAYS TO BRING CAR IN FOR OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND IS CAR BURNS MORE THAN 1QT IN 1100-1300 MILES I WOULD GET IT REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY (NOT RECALL KEEP IN MIND). SO THE TEST SHOWED I BURNED 3/4 OF OIL IN 1300. I GET NOTHING FROM TOYOTA. NOT ENOUGH OIL CONSUMPTION FOR THEM TO DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND 3/4 IN 1300 MILES IS (A LOT) MEANS I HAVE TO ADD 4QTS OF OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES IF INTERVALS ARE 5000 MILES. THAT IS RIDICULOUS!!! I AM BASICALLY DOING A OIL CHANGE MY SELF BY BURNING & ADDING BECAUSE 4QTS IS THE CAPACITY OF THIS CAR. TOYOTA SET THE STANDARD OF THIS TEST BEYOND REASONABLE ON PURPOSE. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT WILL QUALIFY FOR ANY REPAIRS TO THE PISTON RINGS OR BLOCK WOULD BE PEOPLE THAT NEGLECTED THEIR ENGINES BY NOT ADDING OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AND DAMAGING THE ENGINE MORE THAN THE GOOD GUY CONSTANTLY ADDING TO SAVE OUR CAR!!! TOYOTA IS NOT A GOOD COMPANY FOR REASONS LIKE THIS. I WILL STICK WITH HONDA IN THE FUTURE. HONDA DOES NOT PLAY THESE STUPID GAMES WITH PEOPLE. MY SCION HAS BEEN CONSUMING EXCESSIVE OIL SINCE IT WAS BRAND NEW AND TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT ISSUE SINCE THEY ISSUED A TSB ON IT AND FREE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. DUE TO THIS PROBLEM THIS CAR IS NOT A GOOD CAR TO OWN. I STRONGLY SUGGEST PEOPLE WITH SIMILAR PROBLEM TO COME FORWARD AND LET THE WORLD KNOW HOW RIDICULOUS TOYOTA IS HANDING THE OIL CONSUMPTIONS ISSUE.

THE CONTACT HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

I OWE A 2008 SCION XB. I HAVE NOTICE THE OIL CONSUMPTION OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS USE MORE AND MORE EACH TIME. I HAD ASKED THE PLACE I GET SERVICE AT ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY HAD TOLD ME ABOUT TOYOTA HAVING A PROBLEM WITH DIFFERENT MODELS HAVE PROBLEMS USING OIL. I HAVEN'T SEE ANY OIL LEAKS OR HAS MY MECHANIC.
"TOO MUCH OIL CONSUMPTION" EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN 2008 I NOTICED TOPPING OFF MY OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. OVER THE YEARS I ADDED MORE AND MORE. I CALLED TOYOTA SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY TOLD BE AN ENGINE SHOULD CONSUME OIL AND IT IS NORMAL. BUT THIS IS TOO MUCH. I NEVER IN MY LIFE HAD TO ADD SO MUCH OIL TO A NEWER CAR. RIGHT NOW I AM ADDING ALMOST A QUART EVERY 1000 MILES. I HAVE 110K MILES. THIS CAN GET DANGEROUS IF YOU ARE ON A LONG TRIP AND RUN OUT OF OIL AND ENGINE CAN SEIZE UP AND STALL. LUCKILY I ALWAYS CARRY EXTRA OIL WITH ME. IMAGINE HOW MUCH MONEY I SPENT ON OIL THROUGH THE YEARS. I AM NOT HAPPY AND THIS WILL BE MY LAST TOYOTA I EVER OWN.

FINALLY, AFTER PAYING FOR AN OIL CHANGE WAS TOLD TO LET THE ENGINE RUN AND COME BACK IN WHEN EITHER THE OIL LAMP CAME ON OR IT WAS TIME FOR AN OIL CHANGE. LAMP CAME ON BEFORE MILEAGE WAS THROUGH SO WENT BACK TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT OUR CAR "QUALIFIED FOR RECALL PROCEDURE." WAS NOT GIVEN DATES OR ANYTHING, JUST TOLD WE WOULD BE CONTACTED WHEN THE PARTS CAME IN. THE CAR SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE, ENGINE SHUDDERS AND FEELS LIKE ABOUT TO STALL EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. CALLED DEALERSHIP TO LET THEM KNOW AND GIRL ON PHONE SAID THAT IF REPAIRS WERE NEEDED BEFORE PARTS CAME IN, IT WOULD BE OUT OF MY POCKET, AND THAT LOANER CAR WOULD ALSO BE AT MY EXPENSE. FINALLY GOT WORD THAT PARTS ARE IN AND NOW SHOULD BE SCHEDULED SOON FOR REPAIRS. WILL NEVER BUY FROM TOYOTA AGAIN.

VEHICLE THAT HIT SCION FAILED TO STOP FOR A RED SIGNAL AND COLLIDED INTO SCION HITTING FIRST THE RIGHT FRONT CORNER OF PASSENGER SIDE, THEN HIT AGAIN HEAD ON. AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. WE HAVE 2 WITNESSES THAT SAW THE ACCIDENT AND ALL WITNESSES INCLUDING THE POLICE OFFICER NOTICED THE AIR BAG WAS NOT DEPLOYED. STOPPING CAUSED WHAT LITTLE ENGINE OIL WAS IN PAN TO MOVE OUT OF AREA OF SENSOR TRIGGERING LOW OIL WARNING. ADDED OIL UPON ARRIVAL AT HOME; DIPSTICK DID NOT SHOW ANY OIL. THIS CONTINUED AFTER MULTIPLE OIL CHANGES AT SCHEDULED INTERVALS. CONSUMPTION IS APPROXIMATELY 1-2 QUARTS IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES, APPROX 5K MILES. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST PERFORMED. VEHICLE PASSED, BUT WAS TOLD THAT IN ORDER TO QUALIFY AS AN OIL CONSUMPTION VEHICLE, THE CAR WOULD HAVE TO CONSUME 1 QUART PER 1000 MILES. WITH ONLY A 4 QUART CAPACITY, THE CAR WOULD BURN ALL OIL PRIOR TO THE 5K OIL CHANGE FREQUENCY LEADING TO A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE - SEIZE. I HAD TO PAY FOR AN OIL CHANGE TO HAVE THE TEST PERFORMED. I WAS TOLD THAT MY OIL CONSUMPTION WAS NORMAL, WHICH I DO NOT ACCEPT AS FACT. THIS SCION XB WAS PURCHASED AS A CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE FROM A DEALERSHIP. I AM ANNOYED THAT THE ONUS FALLS UPON ME TO PROVE THAT MY CAR CONSUMES OIL, ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT IT DOES NOT MEET THE UNREALISTIC CRITERIA. I HAVE BEEN A TOYOTA OWNER SINCE 1982. I WILL NEVER BUY A TOYOTA VEHICLE AGAIN AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE SCION BRAND TO ANYONE. I DO NOT BELIEVE TOYOTA BUILDS QUALITY VEHICLES ANYMORE. *TR

I PURCHASED THE SCION XB 2008 NEW AND HAVE HAD ALL OIL CHANGES AND RECOMMENDED SERVICE PERFORMED TIMELY. AT APPROX. 45,000 MILES (BUT AFTER THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, (I AM A LOW MILEAGE DRIVER) I NOTICED THAT IT HAD CONSUMED TWO QUARTS OF OIL WITHIN AROUND 1500 MILES AFTER THE OIL CHANGE (RECOMMENDED TO PERFORM EVERY 5000 MILES). I HAD AN OIL CHANGE AND TOOK A ROAD TRIP SO THAT I PUT MORE THAN A 1000 MILES ON IT IN ABOUT 10 DAYS, AND WHEN I WAS ON A STEEP INCLINE THE CHECK OIL LIGHT CAME ON. MY MECHANIC SAID IT WAS POSSIBLE THAT THE OIL HAD NOT BEEN FILLED PROPERLY AFTER THE CHANGE AND TOPPED IT OFF. IT WAS LOW AGAIN WHEN I HAD IT CHANGED AT THE 51,000 MARK; AFTER ABOUT 1,500 MILES IT NEEDED TWO QUARTS OF OIL WHICH WAS ADDED. AFTER ANOTHER 1,500 OR SO MILES IT NEEDED ANOTHER TWO QUARTS OF OIL, WHICH I ADDED. I CONTACTED TOYOTA, AND WITHOUT RECITING THE INITIAL RUNAROUND, THEY SET UP AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AFTER CONFIRMING IT WAS NOT LEAKING OIL. THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST IS NOT COMPLETED - IT MAY NOT BE A TRUE REFLECTION OF OIL USAGE AS IT SEEMS TO BE WORSE WHEN DRIVEN A LONG DISTANCE AT ONE TIME WHICH WILL PROBABLY NOT HAPPEN DURING THIS 1,000 MILE CYCLE. I THEN GOT A NOTICE IN THE MAIL THAT THEY HAD A PROGRAM TO REIMBURSE OWNERS FOR THE PARTS (NOT THE LABOR) IF THEY BELIEVED THE VEHICLE MET CERTAIN (UNSPECIFIED) CRITERIA AFTER THE OWNERS HAD THE REPAIRS DONE FOR THE DEFECT WHICH, APPARENTLY, THEY ALREADY KNOW SPECIFICALLY EXISTS AND HOW TO FIX IT. THE NOTICE SAID THEY ARE MAKING AS MANY REPLACEMENT PARTS AS POSSIBLE BEFORE ENCOURAGING US TO GET OUR VEHICLES REPAIRED. MY NUMBERS ARE NOT EXACT BUT THE INFORMATION IS GENERALLY ACCURATE. 1. INCIDENT THE DRIVER WAS DRIVING THE 2008 SCION XB ALONE ON EAST-BOUND I-80, APPROACHING CARQUINEZ BRIDGE, VALLEJO, WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPPED WORKING. THE DRIVING SPEED WAS ABOUT 70 MPH. TIME OF THE INCIDENT WAS AROUND 12:45 A.M. ON DECEMBER 25, 2014. HE WAS DRIVING ON THE 1ST LANE, AND TO THE BEST OF HIS KNOWLEDGE, THERE WAS ONLY ONE COMPACT CAR PASSING NEARBY, WHEN THE CAR STOPPED ALL OF A SUDDEN . HE TRIED TO REACH OUT FOR A TOW TRUCK WITHOUT SUCCESS, BUT LATER ON HE REMEMBERED HE WAS AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF A CLASSIC MEMBERSHIP CARD REGISTERED IN THE NAME OF HIS MOTHER. BUT HE DID NOT HAVE THE CARD ON HIM AT THAT TIME, BUT GAVE HIS NAME TO AAA TO PROVE HE IS AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER. FINALLY, THE AAA TOW TRUCK ARRIVED ON THE SCENE AROUND 1:45 A.M. HE TOWED IT TO HOME, AND DAYS LATER HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC SHOP, EAST BAY AUTO LOCATED ON NORTH TEXAS STREET. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND SAID THE ENGINE GOT BROKEN AND THE CAR NEEDED REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE. 2. SCION SIDE ON FEB. 10, 2015, THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE RECEIVED A LETTER OF WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION FROM SCION. THE OWNER DID NOT TAKE AN INITIATIVE TO CALL SCION BEFORE RECEIVING THIS NOTIFICATION. THE NEXT DAY, THE VEHICLE OWNER CALLED SCION AND FILED A CLAIM FOR ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION. CASE #[XXX]. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP AT SCION ARRANGED FOR TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN VACAVILLE TO INSPECT AND DIAGNOSE SCION XB TO SEE IF THE ENGINE FAILURE WAS DUE TO EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION. AFTER AROUND 50K MILES, I NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE OIL WAS ABOUT A QUART LOW WHEN TAKING IT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE. AT THE TIME I WAS TOLD PRETTY MUCH WHAT THE OWNERS MANUAL STATES ABOUT OIL CONSUMPTION. I'VE OWNED MANY VEHICLES IN THE PAST, OLD AND NEW, AND NEVER HAD ONE THAT USED THIS MUCH OIL. IF ANY OF THEM DID USE OIL, IT WAS A SMALL ENOUGH AMOUNT THAT YOU CAN'T TELL FROM THE DIPSTICK. SO, WITH THEIR EXPLANATION I MOVED ON. AS TIME WENT ON, IT SEEMED MORE AND MORE OIL WAS BEING USED BY THE ENGINE. NOW AFTER THE WARRANTY WOULD NO LONGER COVER SUCH A THING, I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST, WHICH I DID NOT DO SINCE ANY PROBLEM THEY DISCOVER WOULD COME OUT OF MY POCKET. AS TIME PROGRESSES, THE VEHICLE IS AT THE POINT WHERE I HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL EVERY WEEK AND ADD OIL. I LEARNED THAT IF I WAIT FOR THE NEXT OIL CHANGE @ 3000 MILES, THERE IS NO OIL LEFT IN THE ENGINE. WHAT'S EVEN MORE DISTURBING IS THAT THERE IS NO INDICATION ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THAT ANYTHING IS WRONG. I WOULD SUSPECT THE OIL LIGHT WOULD COME ON AT SOME POINT, BUT NEVER HAVE I SEEN THIS LIGHT, OR ANY OTHER LIGHT COME ON INDICATING AN ISSUE. TO SUM IT UP, THERE ARE NO LEAKS, THE ENGINE WILL CONSUME ALL OF THE OIL WITHIN 3000 MILES IF NOT MONITORED, AND THERE ARE NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING A PROBLEM. *TR
