I am writing to report significant safety concerns regarding my 2008 Scion [include model, e.g., tC or xB]. After purchasing the vehicle, I discovered multiple serious mechanical and structural defects that make the car unsafe to operate on public roads. 1. Suspension/Struts – The struts are severely worn and are causing premature and uneven tire wear. This creates a major risk of tire blowout or loss of control while driving. 2. Motor Mount – The engine mount is missing screws and bolts, which results in excessive engine movement. This could lead to engine damage or failure while in motion. 3. Alignment – The vehicle’s alignment is completely off, causing the car to pull while driving and further worsening tire wear and handling. 4. Brakes and Rotors – The brakes are nearly nonfunctional, and the rotors are warped and damaged, severely reducing stopping power and increasing the risk of a crash. 5. License Plate Mount – The vehicle has no designated place to mount a rear tag/license plate, which makes it illegal to drive and difficult to comply with state requirements. 6. Missing Headlight – One headlight is entirely missing, significantly reducing visibility at night and making the vehicle a danger to myself and others Fuel System – The fuel system is contaminated and requires flushing. This is causing performance issues, engine hesitation, and raises concerns about potential engine damage or stalling. I have been quoted over $2,500 in repairs just to bring the vehicle to a safe operating condition by 4 mechanics I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether these issues represent a pattern of neglect, safety violations, or improper sales practices, especially if other owners have reported similar problems. I TURNED ON MY CAR AND WAS SLOWLY BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL ICON LIT UP. THE STEERING SUDDENLY BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN AND I WAS BARELY ABLE TO PARK THE CAR ON THE STREET. I'M UNABLE TO USE THE CAR FOR ANYTHING ELSE AS I CAN BARELY STEER AT ALL.

POWER STEERING SHUT OFF AND THE LIGHT IS ON ON THE DASHBOARD WITH THE BREAK LIGHT TOO. CAR WAS OK AND THEN START TO DRIVE IT ON HIGHWAY AND ALL AT A SUDDEN THE STEERING LIGHT WENT UP AND HE BRAKE LIGHT TOO AND IT SHUTED OFF THE POWER STEERING
POWER STEERING WENT OUT. GOOGLE SEARCH SHOWS IT IS HAPPENING TO MANY 2008 SCION XB OWNERS. FROM PARKED, TURN KEY TO START, POWER STEERING NO LONGER WORKS AND WARNING LIGHTS FLASH. TOO MANY 2008 SCION XBS ON THE ROAD TODAY ARE ENCOUNTERING THE SAME PROBLEM, AND SHOULD BE FIXED AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER.

I WAS BACKING UP INTO THE GARAGE WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST ALL THE USE OF THE POWER STEERING
VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO LOCATION AND PARKED. WHEN I RETURNED TO THE VEHICLE, RESTARTED AND BEGAN TO PULL AWAY, STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND ALL ASSIST IN THE STEERING DISAPPEARED MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. HAD TO HAVE STEERING ECM REPLACED.

ELECTRONIC STEERIN MODULE LOCATED UNDER THE DASH ARE A DANGER TO PEOPLES LIVES AND CAN GO OUT WITHOUT WARNING AND CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOSE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. ALSO THESE MODULES ON A 2008 MALIBU, 2009 SATURN AND MANY OTHER VEHICLES ARE KNOWN TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTUERS OF THE AUTO HAVE ISSUED A TSB ON THIS ITEM WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL. IF THIS MATTER IS NOT TAKEN CARE OF ASAP SOMEONE WILL LOSE THIER LIFE! JUST A MATTER OF TIME! I HAVE 35 YEARS MECHANIC EXPERIENCE ON VEHICLES AND 27 YEARS EXPERIENCE ON JET ENGINES WITH THE GOV. THESE SAME TYPE MODULES ARE BEING USED ON CURRENT MODEL VEHICLES OF ALL MAKES AND SHOULD BE DEEMED UNSAFE! ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO HABDLE YOUR VEHICLE AFTER FAILURE IS A DANGER TO LIVES AND MANUFACTUERS ARE AWARE OF THIS. THEY WOULD NOT HAVE ISSUED TSB'S IF THEY WERE NOT AWARE! STARTED THE CAR AFTER BEING PARKED OVERNIGHT AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND IT HAD A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER STEERING. I TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA SPECIALTY MECHANIC AND HE DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING ECU HAD FAILED AT IT COULD ONLY BE FIXED PROPERLY AT THE DEALERSHIP.

ON 9/14/15 AROUND 7AM MY POWER STEERING WAS WORKING GREAT, BUT 30 MIN. WHEN I TURNED MY CAR ON I SAW THE STEERING WHEEL WARNING INDICATOR HAS TURNED ON. NOT KNOWING ANYTHING I DROVE MY CAR TO AN AUTOBODY TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE ELECTRIC MECHANISM THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED AND TO BRING MY CAR INTO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. LATER THAT DAY I DROVE MY CAR TO THE DEALER WITH A REALLY STIFF STEERING WHEEL. THE NEXT DAY THE DEALER CALLED AND TOLD ME THAT THE POWER STEERING WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS INOPERATIVE, SO I HAD THEM REPLACE THE PART AND THE TOTAL HAS PUT A HOLE IN MY WALLET. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR SINCE JULY 2007 AND IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN 10 YEARS YET THAT PART IS NOT FUNCTIONAL ANYMORE.

I TOOK IT TO SEARS AND THEY DIAGNOSED THAT IT WAS THE ECU. I WAS TOLD BY SEARS THAT I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO BRING IT TO A DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. I DROPPED IT OFF ABOUT AN HOUR AGO AND AM WAITING TO GET HIT WITH THE REPAIR COSTS. *TR

IT WILL BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO HAVE A WRECKER SERVICE PICK UP THE VEHICLE AND HAUL TO THE DEALER. *TR

I WAS DRIVING MY CAR DOWN THE ROAD AND, ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE POWER STEERING COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING WHICH REALLY CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR INJURY OR FATALITY SINCE IT CAUGHT ME COMPLETELY BY SURPRISE. I WASN'T VERY FAR FROM MY SCION DEALER AND I CAREFULLY DROVE RIGHT OVER THERE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE POWER STEERING ECU COMPUTER HAD FAILED (THE CAR HAS ELECTRONIC STEERING) AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A VERY HIGH COST ($800). SO, MY CAR IS SITTING AND WAITING FOR A NEW COMPUTER WHICH THEY DIDN'T HAVE AND HAD TO ORDER. THIS IS A TERRIBLE AND VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY PROBLEM. I'M A FAIRLY STRONG MALE AND WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR, BUT IF AN ELDERLY PERSON OR SOMEONE SMALL AND NOT STRONG WAS DRIVING, THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT OR FATALITY. THIS ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT HAPPEN (ESPECIALLY IN A CAR LIKE MINE WITH AROUND 73,000 MILES) AND IS, IN MY OPINION, AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WHICH NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AND COMPENSATION NEEDS TO BE MADE BY THE MANUFACTURER FOR REPAIRS INVOLVING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED PROBLEM INVOLVING 2008 SCION XB CARS, AND MANY OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED IT AS AN INTERNET SEARCH CLEARLY SHOWS. SHE WAS COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED AND SCARED OUT OF HER MIND WHEN SHE MADE IT HOME(HER CALLS TO ME ON CELL WEREN'T COMING THROUGH FOR SOME REASON). WE PURCHASED THIS CAR USED, BUT HAD BEEN VERY WELL MAINTAINED AND HAD ONLY 24K MILES ON IT, SO DIDN'T THINK AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WAS NEEDED. UNFORTUNATELY, IT HAD 71K ON IT AT THE TIME OF INCIDENT. TOYOTA DOWNPLAYED IT AS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. IT ONLY TOOK ME 4 MINUTES TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS.

WE CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW PROBLEMATIC THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING CAN BE. WE ARE FILING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE SAFETY IS OUR MAIN CONCERN AND THE STEERING PROBLEM IS LIFE THREATENING. AS WE STARTED THE CAR, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY STIFF AND DIFFICULT TO TURN. IMMEDIATELY WE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP. WE SPOKE WITH THEIR SERVICE MANAGER AND HE CONFIRMED THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT UNKNOWN AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. WE ASKED FOR A PRICE ESTIMATE AND HE SAID THAT WITHOUT WARRANTY IT WILL BE PROXIMATELY $800.00. WE TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A VERY WELL EXPERIENCE MECHANIC. HE CONFIRMED THAT THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND IT SHOULD BE TAKEN DIRECTLY TO DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. MY XB WAS BOUGHT ON APRIL 2008. 1.ON NOVEMBER 2009, THE VSC LIGHT WAS ON. DEALER FIXED IT BY REPLACING #3 IGNITION COIL. 2.ON DECEMBER 2009, THE VSC LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN, THIS TIME DEALER REPLACED #2 IGNITION COIL. 3. ON MARCH 2011, THE VSC LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN AND DEALER REPLACED #1 IGNITION COIL. 4. ON SEPTEMBER 2011, THE ELECTRIC STEERING LIGHT WAS ON AND STEERING WILL NOT TURN. THIS TIME I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I OWN 2008 SCION XB WHICH CURRENTLY HAS 87000 MILES ON IT. 4 WEEKS AGO TODAY I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND FROM 1ST GEAR TO SECOND GEAR THE CAR JERKED HARD AND ALL VSA, ABS, CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON, AND CAR WOULDN'T SHIFT OUT OF GEAR AND STEERING BEGAN TO ACT FUNNY. I HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO MECHANIC IN FEAR OF DRIVING IT ANT FURTHER. MECHANIC RAN DIAGNOSTIC ON CAR AND CODE READ TRANSMISSION SENSOR NO GOOD. THEY REPLACED AND PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURRING, LIGHTS ON AS WELL. MECHANIC HAD 3 OTHER MECHANICS COME AND EVALUATE AND AS WELL INQUIRED WITH LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHO SUGGESTED ONLY THAT IT MAY BE WIRING HARNESS BELOW BATTERY WHICH IS A RECURRING PROBLEM, ALSO THAT THEY WOULD GLADLY LOOK AT THE CAR FOR 90 PER HOUR! MECHANICS LOOKED AT HARNESS AND ALL LOOKED TO BE IN GOOD WORKING SHAPE. THE CAR IS STILL PARKED AND NOT REPAIRED 4 WEEKS LATER. *TR

I BOUGHT A 2008 SCION XD IN SEPTEMBER 2008. 6 WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR, I TOTALED IT WHEN STEERING ON AN ON-RAMP TO THE HIGHWAY. IT SPUN THREE TIMES AND FINALLY STOPPED AFTER HITTING THE GUARDRAIL. I WAS ALONE. I GOT WHIPLASH. I AM A VERY EXPERIENCED DRIVER BUT THE CAR LOST ABSOLUTE CONTROL AT A LOW SPEED (UNDER 25 MPH) BUT ON WET BLACKTOP IN THE FALL IN NEW ENGLAND.. THE CAR WAS $30 FROM BEING CLASSIFIED AS A TOTAL. THE BODY SHOP WAS OWNED BY THE DEALER - NOT SURE IF THE $30 DISCREPANCY HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT. THEY ALSO SAID THE FRAME/UNIBODY WAS SLIGHTLY OFF AND LEFT ME WITH A TOTALLY VALUELESS CAR WITH 3,000 MILES ON IT. SINCE THEN I DO NOT TRUST THE STEERING OF THE CAR. IT DOES SEEM TO SWIM AT SPEEDS OVER 55 - 60 MPH - ALMOST A HYDROPLANING FEEL TO THE STEERING ON DRY PAVEMENT. I WONDER WHAT IT WILL TAKE FOR IT TO BE RECALLED? *TR
