The passenger airbag light in my 2018 Subaru Forester intermittently turns off and on, even when the seat is occupied. The vehicle has never been in a crash, and the airbags have not deployed. This issue raises serious safety concerns, especially since it may prevent the airbag from deploying in an accident while a passenger is in the seat. I raised this concern to a local Subaru Dealer, and they shared Subaru has not issued a recall on this make/model and the dealership has not provided a lasting fix. I believe this may be a defect in the occupant detection system or seat wiring.

Sep 4, 2025

The passenger seat Occupant Detection System (ODS) sensor failed, turning off the airbag and illuminating the SRS light. This is a known safety defect covered by Subaru recall 19V701 / WUM-98 for 2015–2018 Foresters built through August 1, 2017. My vehicle, a 2018 Forester XT Touring (VIN [XXX] ), has the same defect but Subaru and NHTSA do not list it as part of the recall. I waited nearly a year for the replacement seat to arrive, and Subaru of America only offered $500 goodwill assistance. I paid about $900 out of pocket for the repair. Given that this is a critical airbag safety system, I believe this vehicle should have been included in the recall population. Passenger seat occupancy detection sensor failure. Known recall for the issue from same year 2018, my vin not included. Delaership stated 5300 dollars to repair. Subaru of America to provide goodwill gesture of 2000 dollars. Remaining amount is 3500 to repair ODS.

My airbag warning light comes on intermittently. My mechanic found it is due to a recalled part but my vin number is not listed on the recall even though it meets the criteria. Subaru Safety Recall WUM-98 NHTSA Recall ID 19V 70. The person in the passenger seat's safety is at risk if the airbags don't deploy in the event of a crash.

May 30, 2025

Subaru recall WUM98 was issued in 2019 to replace the ODS harness on my 2018 Subaru Forester. The part replacement was completed in in April 2020. The harness failed again in Oct 2024. It was replaced for the 2nd time. Now, my passenger air bag light is on for the 3rd time, and the dealership is indicating that the ODS mat is the culprit (not the harness). Subaru is not covering this under any open recall. Note that Subaru currently has an open recall WRA-24 for certain 2020 - 2022 Forester & Outback models to replace all (four) of the Occupant Detection System sensors in the front passenger seat. Since Subaru is saying that the issue in recall WRA-24 is the same as my issue, it is my belief that other models should also be included in this recall. It should also be noted that for WRA-24, they still don't have parts for many of the vehicles that need the seat assembly replaced, which may indicate supply issues. I was also told that Subaru does not have the seat assembly for my vehicle. The length of time for Subaru to get parts is unacceptable. Recall WRA-24 was issued by letter on May 21, 2024. It is my belief that they should also cover costs for rental vehicles until the issue is fixed.

Intermittent failure of occupant detection system on front passenger seat which turns off airbag even though an adult is sitting in the seat. The occupant detection system wiring harness was recalled and replaced in 2020. I believe there is a continuing issue with this recall either not being a complete solution or being repaired with a defective part or new part that did not solve the issue. This is a critical occupant safety issue. This issue has occurred multiple times and continues to be an issue.

I am the second owner of this vehicle and lately my passenger airbag sometimes doesn’t turn on due to a harness connected to the occupant plate being faulty. When the issue first occurred I contacted my local Subaru service center and explained my situation and told them I had seen there was a recall for my exact issue. They informed me that the repair had already been done on my vehicle and the only solution offered was to pay a $140 diagnostic fee to see if that was the actual cause of my airbag not turning on. I took it to my local mechanic shop named Peet’s Garage and they confirmed there was an issue with the harness and my vehicle had a code for my passenger side airbag. I contacted Subaru customer advocacy since the affected part had a past recall. I was told since the repair was done in 2020 it’s no longer their responsibility and was refused further assistance . I now have a 50/50 chance of having a passenger airbag working in my car and if I want it to be repaired I’ll have to pay out of pocket. There has been multiple complaints from other consumers online being affected by this issue on the same make and model and Subaru is still refusing to take further action. This is a very serious safety issue and not a cheap repair as the only solution made available by Subaru is to replace the entire seat cushion and wiring when all they did was replace the effected harness.

2018 Subaru Forester Safety air bag recall I drive my grandchildren in front passenger seat. There’s a safety recall. No incident yet. What has to happen before this air bag problem is fixed?

Mar 19, 2025

THE ODS is not properly determining the status of the right front seat occupant. The airbag warning light is illuminated, and the front passenger airbag is deactivated even with a person sitting in the passenger seat. The ODS is also unable to determine if someone is in the seat and triggers the seatbelt alert when anything (even a purse) is on the seat. This exact issue was part of a Subaru recall WUM-98R, for 2015-2018 Subaru Foresters produced between January 20, 2015 – August 01, 2017. Subaru is claiming my vehicle doesn't qualify as it was not part of the recall even though I having the same issues as the recall and I own a 2018 Subaru Forester. Furthermore, as listed in the recall if a vehicle is part of the recall and is brought in for inspection "The part identification label affixed to the yellow sensor mat wiring harness is the focus of this inspection. If the date code is 18074 or BEFORE AND has the supplier code 6578 (RED box in photo) on it, the harness is NG must be replaced. Proceed to Harness Replacement Procedure as outlined below." The date code on my label is before 18074 and the supplier code is 6578. I am asking for your assistance in holding Subaru accountable to add my vehicle to the recall.

The contact owns a 2018 Subaru Forester. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light illuminated, and the air bag was not activated message was displayed. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70, 000.

Per the dealership, the occupant detection wiring harness resulting in the passenger side not activating despite a passenger sitting in the car. This causes a risk to the passenger as the airbag is not activated and the warning light goes on. This problem has been confirmed by the Subaru dealership. There is currently a recall for this issue for this particular issue and vehicle, however the VIN is not included. Additionally, when I look at the product campaign bulletin it outlines how to identify if there is a faulty harness. The harness ID falls in the vehicle within the the range of numbers that classifies it as a faulty harness. Despite this, Subaru refuses to replace it at their cost as the VIN is not covered by the recall notice.

Oct 2, 2024

The sensor in the seat has been intermittently working for years and finally quit. It costs close to $2000 to fix and there is no way to switch the air bag to stay on. It seems this is an issue with other 2018 Subaru foresters and for some reason the recall did not apply to my VIN.

Sep 17, 2024

This is related to the ODS recall (October 3, 2019 NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V701000) where the sensor mat harness was replaced. Turns out the ODS sensor mat also needs to be replaced. The issue was happening intermittently throughout 2024 and I have brought the car in for service but the part is on back order for 2 months now.

Sep 9, 2024

The passenger-side front airbag Occupancy Detection System harness failed on my vehicle. The dealer charged me for a replacement, even though this part was recalled. They said they could not perform the repair free of charge because the recall was not listed for my VIN. I attempted to contact Subaru 12 days ago to request reimbursement, but I did not receive a response. I do not have the old part available, but I do have a photograph of the supplier code and date code on the harness. The codes are within the affected range, as indicated in recall bulletin WUM-98R (NHTSA ID 19V-701) Evidently, Subaru has failed to identify all of the vehicles affected by this defect. Passenger safety was put at risk because the airbag system would disable itself whenever somebody sat in the front passenger seat. Because the problem was intermittent, and because Subaru failed to notify me of the defect, this led to a delay in getting it repaired. The dealer diagnosed the issue and determined that the harness needed to be replaced. Whenever the failure occurred, the airbag trouble light turned on and the message "passenger air bag off" was displayed, even if there was a passenger in that seat.

Aug 17, 2024

The malfunction identified in NHTSA campaign number 19V701 has been continually malfunctioning again, beginning about a year ago. This is happening within a relatively short time after it was supposedly fixed. (Subaru's number for this recall is WUM-98). It is the exact same problem as previously identified in 19V701.

Aug 9, 2024

My 2018 Subaru Forester has a faulty passenger air bag sensor, which has been diagnosed by my local Subaru dealer, with a repair cost of $1,500+ for labor and parts. It has intermittently turned on and off again, but after getting a separate issue fixed by my dealer, they diagnosed this problem, and every time the car is turned on, the warning light is constantly displayed, and the passenger seat airbag light shows "OFF" even when someone is in the passenger seat. Upon research, this is a known and common issue with other Subaru Foresters with heated seats in the same model year (my Forester does have heated seats), but my VIN is not included in the Subaru recall for this specific repair. This greatly puts the passenger in my car at risk, as the sensor does not recognize that a person is in the seat while they are riding, and if we were to be in an accident, their airbag would not deploy. I am frustrated that this is a known, common safety issue that affects my model and year of car, but my VIN is not included on the recall list. I would expect that my car should also be included in the recall and fixed by the dealer at their expense as it is clearly documented many times on other 2018 Subaru Foresters.

The passenger seat, passenger air bags, and occupant detection system are failing. YES! Available for inspection. Passenger occupants are put at risk riding in my passenger seat as the seat does not detect if the seatbelt is on, or even if someone is sitting in the seat. The AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY WHEN INTENDED! Issue was first brought to [XXX] at Subaru in Pasco WA, where they “could not do anything because it was not YET a recall.” As of [XXX], it has been confirmed by an ISC (Subaru of Hermiston, OR) My vehicle has been there since!!! They have not been able to fix the issue or get the part. There is no date of when the part is expected to available. We have been working with Subaru Customer Advocates who have extended my loaner car out 30 days, but after that. I will be OUT OF A SAFE vehicle. I have three children and NEED my passenger seat to be working effectively and SAFELY! Yes, there were warning lights that came on. The lights were on the dash. The red square with an “i” next to odometer and a red passenger air bag symbol below the other light that popped up. I have pictures and videos dated between June 2023 to March 2024 of the lights coming on. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2018 Subaru Forester. The contact stated that the front passenger’s side air bag warning light was intermittently flashing on the instrument panel with or without an occupant seated in the front passenger’s seat. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a diagnostic test was performed; the diagnostic test discovered that the occupant detection system mat was defective and needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V701000 (Air Bags) which was linked to the failure; however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was then notified of the failure and confirmed that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.

I receive a warning light and the passenger air bag does not turn on when I have a passenger in the front seat.

Apr 14, 2024

Airbag on passenger side stopped working last November . Subaru says it’s the switch in the seat and the seat needs replacing at a cost of approximately $1300. This should be part of the recall and be paid for by Subaru.

Mar 28, 2024

Vehicle Airbag light on Dash and is available for inspection upon request. Safety is at risk due to Airbag SRS system being disabled and bas will not deploy due to malfunctioning component. Vehicle has the symptoms of "Subaru recalled certain 2015-2018 Foresters equipped with heated seats, due to faulty wiring in an airbag sensor. If the wire's connection loosens, the front passenger airbag may deactivate even though the seat is occupied, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. This was remedied by replacing the ODS (Occupant Detection Sensor) in the passenger seat. Vehicle will be brought to dealer for inspection, however, myself and others on forums with 2018 Subaru foresters with heated seats apparently fall outside of the recall, but experience the same issue. Warning lamps appeared and system was scanned, airbag module tested ok.

Mar 28, 2024

Not sure why my car is not being recalled for occupant detection harness. Subaru telling me it’s the vin number, that’s not the problem it’s I have a defective harness according to Subaru product bulletin wud-98r harness with date prior to 18074 is defective and needs to be replaced free of charge. My harness has a date of 17293. My car has all the criteria of the recall. This started back in April 2020 with warning light on and off same with airbag indicator. Now the warning light is on constantly and airbag is off constantly

Mar 15, 2024

The passenger airbag warning light had appeared intermittently but now is continuous, indicating that the passenger airbag will not function when someone is seated there. The car was taken to the dealer and I was told that the seat bottom would need to be replaced. There is a recall WUM-98 on this very issue for 2018 Foresters with heated seats which my car has. Neither the dealer nor Subaru of America has explained to me why my car is not included in this recall. This is a serious passenger safety issue and the recall should be expanded since it is clearly a vehicle defect.

Feb 25, 2024

In early October, 2023, the red airbag inoperative light (airbag "off") came on the dashboard when someone is sitting in the passenger seat. This was an intermittent issue with the light coming on at times and off for several days before reappearing. On , the vehicle was brought to the Suburu dealer (Subaru of Auburn, WA) for testing and repair. Suburu technicians tested the seat sensor unit and determined is was at fault. (see uploaded work order) Part number 64139SG200VH was ordered [XXX] as no local dealers had stock of this particular part number. At the time of the order, I was informed that the part would be available in December, 2023. I queried Suburu of Auburn in mid-December and they indicated a new date of February, 2024 for availability of the part. On [XXX], I visited the Suburu dealer and was told the part is still "on back order" with no firm date of delivery. My concern is this is a safety related issued that has no definitive time frame for rectification. This renders the vehicle unsafe for front passenger occupancy. Dec 16, 2023

Our Subaru began experiencing intermittent issues with the warning light for the occupant detection wiring harness (ODS) in October 2023. The vehicle was inspected by Duteau Subaru of Lincoln NE on October 19th 2023 who determined the issue was a malfunctioning of the seat sensor for the occupant seat and was told I would have to replace the entire seat base to correct the issue. I understand that this issue has already been recalled in Subaru Foresters produced from January 20 2015 to August 1 2017 in recall NHTSA ID 19V-701; however, my forester was produced in March 2018 outside the recall dates. Upon inspection of the ODS sensor mat the tag specified in the recall (photo attached) matched the producer (6578) and dates specified prior to 18074 (17321) in the recall so we were wondering why our car was not part of the recall if all parts by that producer were recalled prior to production date code 18074? When I contacted Subaru of America to determine why our car was not also recalled I was told that recalls are VIN specific and set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and no further action was going to be taken to replace the defective seat sensor.

Dec 5, 2023

Around 83,000 miles my passenger safety air bag warning sensor started coming on and off intermittently. It would happen both when a passenger was in the seat and when no one was in the seat. There have been no previous issues. I immediately scheduled my car to be diagnosed at the Subaru dealership and they notified me the passenger occupancy sensor pad is faulty and that it would cost $1,483.47 to replace. The dealer stated that the passenger airbag might not deploy if the sensor is not replaced. This puts the safety of the passenger at risk. I researched and found that there was a recall with 2016-2018 Subaru Forester SUV's with heated seats. Recall WUM-98. However, when I called Subaru they said that there were no open recalls on my car.

Oct 11, 2023

We took the car in for servicing because the SRS light went off. Upon inspection, the Subaru service department found that the SRS sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. They said if not replaced, there is a chance the airbag would not go off in the event of an accident. The part is backordered until January, but Subaru won't ok a rental or car loan until the part arrives. Their solution is to inform us that there is nothing they can do until the part arrives, and released our vehicle with instructions to not have anyone in the passenger seat until then. This cannot be a safe and appropriate course of action.

Aug 23, 2023

When there is a passenger in my Subaru Forrester, the Occupant Detection System deactivates the passenger airbag. When I researched the issue, I noticed there is a recall for Foresters but my specific vehicle doesn't fall into the recall. When reviewing Product Campaign Bulletin on the NHTSA website, the Harness Label Inspection Procedure states to inspect the label and if its has supplier code 6578 AND the date code before 18074, the harness must be replaced. My Forester has both the supplier code and the date code before 18074 but my vehicle doesn't have a recall associated with it so the Subaru service center won't replace it. I'm currently driving with a deactivated airbag and that can't possibly be safe. Please NHTSA, widen the recall!

Aug 11, 2023

The SRS passenger warning light comes on intermittently. Sometimes with a passenger the indication is the air bag is "ON" and everything seems to be fine. Sometimes with a passenger we get the message that the "SRS SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE CHECKED". And sometimes we get that message even without a passenger. This started at around 80K miles.

Jul 21, 2023

I'm unsure why this 2018 Forester wasn't one of the many manufactured that year recalled for an intermittent passenger seat air bag sensor malfunction since the focus of that recall remains the problem with this particular Forester: it has heated seats and displays an intermittent on/off passenger seat air bag light while a passenger is seated in that seat. The malfunction has been occurring for the past several years, however, our attempts to document and diagnose it have occurred much more recently. We took it to a dealership on 5/9/23; despite keeping it overnight and making numerous attempts to duplicate the problem (at a cost to us of $142) they were unable to do so. However, on 6/27/23, as I drove my wife a distance of approximately 150 miles and she sat in the front passenger seat, the airbag light displayed “off” almost the entire trip. Also, she and our son traveled about 400 miles between 16-19 June; he drove, she sat “front right”. During that trip the sensor light showed intermittently on and off and my wife was able to take time and date stamped photos of the sensor light from her point of view in the passenger seat; both when it was on and when it was off. I reported "all of the above" to the dealership and received a reply referring me to the "apparent" minimum weight limit needed for a passenger to trigger the sensor (100 lbs; I've seen 75), together with the explanation that "electronics" could interfere with operation of that sensor. Although my wife at times weighs just under 100 lbs, that weight limit doesn't explain why the sensor light is INTERMITTENTLY on and off on the same trip. At the very least, since she's now always concerned about failure of the airbag to inflate in the event of an accident, a recall/replacement/addition to the previously issued recall applicable to the exact same malfunction should be required. Based on dealership response, it will take an order from you before any additional repairs/replacements are made.

Airbag light has come on stating that they will not deploy. Upon looking my vehicle (2018) has the passenger side airbag product with supplier code 6578 and date code 17346 meeting the NG status per bulletin released by NHTSA in October of 2019. I purchased my vehicle 1/2021 from a certified Subaru dealer who did not fix this product despite being notified of the faulty part in December of 2019. However, my VIN does not flag the recall (recall WUM-98, recall number 19V70100). Currently my airbags are not working. It has periodically happened in the past but then would fix itself and the light would go off. Now it has maintained staying on.

My 2018 Subaru Forester should be included in a recall and subaru is denying that this recall exists. My SRS air bag light is on. NHTSA 19V-701 is for Subaru Forester's concerning the passenger airbag being off while the passenger seat is occupied. The recall stops with Forrester's built after August 2017. My Forrester has this problem but was built in October of 2017 so Subaru says it is not covered! That's ridiculous. The exact recall problem not being honored because of some Subaru created arbitrary date? Subaru should repair this for me. I reported it to them and they never followed up as they indicated they would. Since I'm driving the "safest car in America" according to Subaru, my passenger airbag should work while someone is riding in the passenger seat!

May 9, 2023

My srs airbag system has just started going on and off. What I read is there is recall for this. 2018 with heated seats caused by faulty wiring. Yet when I put in my vin shows no recalls. Filed complaint with Subaru they stated basically go get it fixed and will notify you if there is a recall.

May 3, 2023

Since purchase in 2019, Subaru indicates that front passenger seat air bag will not turn on unless passenger is 65 lbs or more. My passenger seat air bag registers "on" if I place any item such as 1 gallon Milk (full bottle from store) in the passenger seat and furthermore, the Warning chime for passenger seat belt (not buckled) will sound continuously until I buckle the seat belt? Our local Subaru dealer will not look at issue unless we are willing to pay $100-$200 for diagnostic test? And then warns us we will have to pay labor and parts costs if sensor is found defective.

The contact's mother owns a 2018 Subaru Forester. The contact stated that the front passenger's side seat belt warning light failed to illuminate and alert the passenger to fasten the seat belt. The air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the front passenger's side seat and sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that a credit towards the repair would be provided. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.

The airbag SHOULD automatically turn on and off when someone is in the passenger seat. Most of the time when there is a passenger in the seat the airbag won't turn on, so we're driving around with no airbag in the passengers seat This sounds like the issue with NHTSA 19V701 but we are not covered in that vin range. This vehicle was also equipped with heated seats.

The contact also stated that the taillights were inoperable. While his wife was driving at an undetermined speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost power steering functionality. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the taillight bulbs were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 90,400.

The passenger sensor light is on and Subaru says I need to replace the seat. There was a recall for certain vehicles but my Vin was not part of the recall - however, if the issue persists why isn't the recall expanded? Do we really want drivers like me to have to replace seats because Subaru is not living up to the standards - due to their faulty wiring? Please expand the recall.

I have had a airbag light on for the passenger side of the car for a long time. Subaru said it is from water damage. I do not recall water damage - I didn't drive through a flood. I understand there is a recall on 2015-2018 Subaru Foresters with and has heated seats but even though my car falls within those parameters my VIN shows up as not being recalled. Something seems fishy!

Air bag sensor in passenger seat doesn't recognize when someone is in it therefore keeping it from activating in the event of an accident. There was a recall (Subaru # WUM98R, NHTSA campaign # 19V701) for that problem for 2015-2018 model years which mine is and with heated seats which it also has. Subaru told me there is no open recall based on the VIN and won't repair without being paid for. There are many reports of the exact same thing across both the internet and NHTSA's own site. It's quite obvious there is a problem with more vehicles than being admitted to by Subaru. The repair for a potential death causing issue shouldn't be the burden of the consumer.

It's quite obvious there is a problem with more vehicles than being admitted to by Subaru. The repair for a potential death causing issue shouldn't be the burden of the consumer.

The passenger airbag is disabled when my light weight wife is riding in our 2018 Subaru Forester. There is a recall for this issue including 2018 models but it looks like Subaru thinks the fault is caused by heated seats. We don't have heated seats - so maybe that's why our VIN doesn't register ??? However it is definitely a safety problem that Subaru must fix. I don't want to get embroiled in a lawsuit if my wife ends up injured in an accident.

I have been getting an airbag warning light for the past few months. I took it into my local Subaru dealer and they confirmed that the issue was the passenger recognition system. The system will recognize a passenger and turn the airbags on sometimes, and sometimes it will not. This puts the passenger’s life at risk in the event of an accident and the airbags don’t deploy.

Similar to recall notice WUM-98R (NHTSA 19V-701). Passenger seat occupancy sensor is intermittent indicating no passenger when one is present or, at times, indicating a passenger when none is present causing the seat belt warning and air bag system to malfunction. Currently, this occurs about 80% of the time. When I queried the internet about this issue, I found the referenced recall. Subaru claims that my vehicle is not included in the recall group. I have asked them to review this claim.

We went it because the ODS (Occupant Detection System)/SRS (supplemental restraint system lit up on our dashboard. I took it in to Subaru of America after seeing that there were no VIN specific recalls on this issue. They immediately said they would cover the parts but we would have to pay for the labor. I then checked for recalls again and found that there was this exact same issue with 2015-2018 Subaru Foresters accounting for almost 370 thousand vehicles but apparently not ours. Obviously the car was no longer safe to drive as we weren't sure if the airbags would trigger in the event of the crash so we are paying out of our pocket to fix the issue but this seems like the old recall needs to be extended to cover other 2018 Subaru Foresters as well because from what I've seen on complaints here and on message boards, the problem is widespread. Hopefully, the NHTSA can investigate and see that the issue is further reaching than the initial 370 thousand vehicles. It's also important to note that 370 thousand subaru foresters between 2015-2018 is about half the amount sold in the US. If this issue affected that many vehicles on the road, it seems like the issue could be further widespread.

Repeatedly the passenger air bag turns off even when car is in motion (warning lights turn on) with passenger in front seat. We have heated seats but apparently are not part of the recall that covers other Foresters with the exact same problem. Anytime we are in the car and it is deactivated it puts the passenger at risk if an accident would occur. This is extremely dangerous and can lead to death from a problem that the company appears to be aware of. It used to be we could turn the car off, have the passenger get out, restart the car, and the sensor will work, but now that does not happen. We would love to get rid of this vehicle but that is not an option at this time.

Passenger air bag light came on two weeks after the 3 year warranty expired. Vehicle was purchased on August 4th 2018 and light came on last week on Tuesday August 24th. No previous issues. Passenger air bag is deactivated even with passenger in the seat. Resetting ECU and other basic troubleshooting did not solve the issue. Wiggled wires and connectors under seat and light went off but came back on during driving. Upon research, this is a known issue with my car that has heated front seats, which mine does. However, for whatever reason, my car VIN is not associated with the recall. ODS issue. The NHTSA campaign number is 19V701

Passenger side airbag sensor malfunctioning, vehicle has heated seats. Sometimes when passenger is seated the passenger airbag does not turn on and the airbag malfunction light comes on. There is a recall for the same issue for the same year model Subaru Recall #19V701000. However, my particular Subaru does not fall within the date range listed on original recall, though it appears to be the exact same problem based on the description.

THE SEAT BELT ALERT WAS ACTIVATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SUBARU OF KENNESAW (905 ERNEST W BARRETT PKWY NW, KENNESAW, GA 30144) HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER DIAGNOSED AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A WIRING HARNESS CONNECTION FAILURE, BRAKE PEDAL SENSOR AND THAT THE SEAT BOTTOM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE FELT UNSAFE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND REQUESTED THAT THE MANUFACTURER BUY BACK THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

(THESE TRIPS INCLUDED BOTH CITY AND HIGHWAY DRIVING.) THE DEALER (ADVENTURE SUBARU OF MENTOR, OHIO) WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE THIS PROBLEM. MORE TROUBLING THOUGH, THE DEALER STATED THAT A SCAN REVEALED NO ACTIVE OR RETAINED ALARM CODES. THIS CAR WAS BUILT AFTER THE END DATE OF RECENT NHTSA CAMPAIGN 19V-701, BUT THIS PROBLEM IS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THAT CAMPAIGN.

HOWEVER MY VEHICLE I DOING THE EXACT THING THAT THE RECALL IS FOR, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG TURNS OFF, LIGHT COMES ON AND AN SRS AIRBAG WARNING MESSAGE COMES ON. TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A TROUBLE CODE FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG THAT THEY JUST CLEARED. SIX MONTHS LATER AND NOW NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, VEHICLE IS DOING THE SAME THING, TURNING THE AIRBAG OFF, ERROR MESSAGE COMING ON. I FEEL AS THOUGH SUBARU DIDN'T INCLUDE ALL OF THE CORRECT VIN NUMBER OF VEHICLES THAT WERE AFFECTED. IT CREATES A SAFETY ISSUE FOR THE PASSENGER, BEING THAT THE AIRBAG TURNS OFF AND WILL NOT WORK IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. I ALSO DON'T FEEL LIKE I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY TO FIX SOMETHING THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM WITH OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME YEAR MODEL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM JUST CAUSE MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT INCLUDED. THEY SHOULD EXTEND THE VIN'S TO ALL 2018 MODELS. *TR

NHTSA RECALL 19V-701 (SUBARU RECALL WUM-98) INCLUDES ONLY FORESTERS WITH SEAT HEATERS MANUFACTURED FROM 1/20/15 - 8/1/17. MY FORESTER WAS MANUFACTURED ON 6/6/18 AND IS NOT CURRENTLY INCLUDED. PAGE 3 OF PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WUM-98R REVISED 11/20/19 (COPY ATTACHED) STATES IF THE DATE CODE ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION WIRING HARNESS IS 18074 (74TH DAY OF 2018) OR BEFORE AND THE SUPPLIER CODE IS 6578, "THE HARNESS IS NG AND THE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED". AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE ATTACHED PHOTO (IMG_1295), THE DATE CODE ON THE HARNESS LABEL IN MY VEHICLE IS 18019 (19TH DAY OF 2018), THE SUPPLIER CODE IS 6578, AND THE SUBARU PART NUMBER (64084SG020) MATCHES THE PART NUMBER ON THE DEFECTIVE HARNESS LABEL ON PAGE 3 OF WUM-98R. ALSO, HOW CAN THE CUT OFF DATE FOR DEFECTIVE WIRING HARNESSES (74TH DAY OF 2018) BE 7 1/2 MONTHS AFTER THE LAST RECALLED VEHICLE WAS PRODUCED ON 8/1/2017? WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE DEFECTIVE WIRING HARNESSES MADE IN THAT 7 1/2 MONTH PERIOD ? AFTER SEVERAL EMAILS TO SUBARU CUSTOMER SERVICE, SUBARU STILL REFUSES TO ADMIT THAT THE WIRING HARNESS IN MY VEHICLE IS DEFECTIVE, STATING ONLY THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 1/20/15 AND 8/1/17, EVEN THOUGH ACCORDING TO PAGE 3 OF WUM-98R THE HARNESS IS CLEARLY DEFECTIVE. NOTE ALSO THAT PAGE 3 OF PART 573 SAFETY RECALL REPORT 19V-701 CLAIMS THE WIRING HARNESS DEFECT WAS CORRECTED ON 2/19/2018, AND LISTS 17 RECALLED PART NUMBERS, BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE PART NUMBER IN THE PHOTOGRAPH OF THE DEFECTIVE HARNESS LABEL ON PAGE 3 OF WUM-98R (AND THE HARNESS LABEL IN MY VEHICLE). THIS RECALL CLEARLY WARRANTS FURTHER INVESTIGATION BY NHTSA.

A MONTH LATER THE CAR STARTED TO DO THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ON AND OFF AGAIN. CAR BACK AGAIN TO DEALER BUT THEN LIGHT WAS GONE OFF. YESTERDAY, SEP 23, 2019 CAR WAS DROPPED AGAIN AT DEALER WITH LIGHT ON AND THE CAR STILL ON, IN ORDER NOT TO LOSE THE SITUATION AT RESTART. ANY ITEM, CELLULAR, TABLET, COMPUTER, BATTERY, BAGS, PURSUES, SHOPPING ITEMS, PAPERS, DOCUMENTS ON THAT SEAT WILL POSSIBLY CAUSE THE SITUATION AGAIN AND THEY WONT COVER IT UNDER WARRANTY. EVER SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT HAS SHOWN 'OFF.' THE NHTSA SITE SHOWS NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE. SOME OF THOSE PEOPLE WERE ADVISED BY SUBARU SERVICE TECHNICIANS THAT THEY MUST HAVE SPILLED SOMETHING ON THE SEAT, AFFECTING THE SENSOR. I WAS TOLD THE SAME WHEN I TOOK MY CAR IN. SUBARU TECHS RAN A DIAGNOSTIC THAT INDICATED NO ERROR CODES. I DISCOVERED ON MY OWN THE APPARENT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. I HAVE DOGS AND CUSTOMARILY PLACE A TOWEL ON ALL SEATS TO KEEP THEM CLEAN. WHEN I REMOVED THE TOWEL MY HUMAN PASSENGER WAS SEATED ON, THE AIR BAG INDICATOR SHOWED 'ON.' IF YOU LOOK AT THE 2018 SUBARU MANUAL, THIS IS MENTIONED IN SECTION 1-56. IN ADDITION TO NOT USING SEAT COVERS, CUSHIONS, ETC., THE PASSENGER IS ADVISED TO TAKE OFF 'UNNECESSARY ITEMS' OR SIT IN THE BACK SEAT TO ENSURE THE AIR BAG WILL ACTIVATE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW, ONE WHICH SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO SUBARU SERVICE TECHS AND CUSTOMERS' ATTENTION.

THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED IT SINCE IT WAS IN THE WARRANTY PERIOD BUT BLAMED US FOR IT MALFUNCTIONING SAYING THAT WE MUST HAVE GOTTEN THE SEAT WET, CAUSING THE SENSOR TO FAIL. WE TOLD THEM THAT WE HADN'T EVER GOTTEN THE SEAT WET. ONE YEAR AND 3 MONTHS AFTER WE'D GOTTEN OUR FORESTER BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP AFTER THE AIRBAG SENSOR REPAIR, A PASSENGER THAT SAT IN THE SEAT BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION THE FACT THAT THE PART OF THE SEATBELT THAT SITS TO THE LEFT OF THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WAS LOOSE. WE TOOK IT TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND THEY TOLD US THAT THE TECHNICIAN HAD REINSTALLED THE SEAT BELT INCORRECTLY AFTER THE AIRBAG SENSOR REPAIR AND THAT IT WAS MISSING A PART AND THAT'S WHY IT WAS LOOSE AND NOT ANCHORED PROPERLY. THEY WERE ORDERING THE PART AND IT WOULD ARRIVE WITHIN A WEEK. WHEN WE RETURNED A WEEK LATER THEY INFORMED US THAT THEY ORDERED THE WRONG PART AND NOW WE'D HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER WEEK FOR THE SEAT BELT TO BE ANCHORED PROPERLY. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DRIVE MY FORESTER FOR ALMOST 6 MONTHS NOW DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUES OF DRIVING WITHOUT THE GUARANTEE OF AIRBAGS DEPLOYING. THE DEALERSHIP HAS NO ANSWER AS TO WHEN SUBARU WILL EVEN START CREATING THIS NEW PART. I AM SURPRISED IT IS NOT A RECALL SINCE IT IS AN AIRBAG ISSUE, AND THE DEALERSHIP STATED THEY HAD AT LEAST 7 OTHER CUSTOMERS CURRENTLY WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I HAVE NOW BEEN WITHOUT MY NEW VEHICLE AND DRIVING A LOANER CAR FROM THE DEALER. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO END IN SIGHT AS TO WHEN THIS ISSUE WILL BE FIXED OR EVEN ADDRESSED BY SUBARU.

THE PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG HAS NOT BEEN WORKING FOR ABOUT 9 MONTHS MAKING IT DANGEROUS FOR A PASSENGER (OR NOT AVAILABLE FOR PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANCY). THE PARTS HAVE BEEN ON ORDER FOR MONTHS BUT STILL NOT DELIVERED. THERE ARE MANY OF THESE ON BACKORDER INDICATING TO ME A SIGNIFICANT SAFERY PROBLEM.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 SUBARU FORESTER. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND FLASHED ON AND OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PRIME SUBARU HYANNIS (508-778-5066, LOCATED AT 24 RIDGEWOOD AVE, HYANNIS, MA 02601) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SEAT WAS WET. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE AIR BAG INDICATOR, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED WHEN A PASSENGER OCCUPIED THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SENSOR UNDERNEATH THE SEAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE PART WAS BACK ORDERED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 14,000.

SOME TIME IN AUGUST 2018 I NOTICED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WOULD RANDOMLY COME ON INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY NEW 2018 SUBARU FORESTER WAS TURNED OFF EVEN WHEN AN ADULT PASSENGER WAS SEATED. I CALLED THE DEALER WHO AT FIRST COULDN'T EXPLAIN IT. IT HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW TIMES, AFTER WHICH I NOTIFIED THE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THE PASSENGER SIDE INDICATOR SWITCH WAS LIKELY FAULTY, AND AROUND OCTOBER 1, 2018 THEY ORDERED A REPLACEMENT PART. THE INDICATOR LIGHT COMES ON RANDOMLY (INDICATING THE BAG IS TURNED OFF) WHEN AN ADULT IS IN THE SEAT - I HAVE HAD THE PASSENGER SHIFT POSITIONS WHICH SOMETIMES TURNS IT BACK ON; I HAVE PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, HAD PASSENGER GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND GET BACK IN, TURN ON THE ENGINE AND SOMETIMES THAT TURNS THE BAG BACK ON. SOMETIMES THE INDICATOR SHOWS THE BAG IS ON (WITH PASSENGER IN SEAT) BUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DRIVE, THE BAG WILL SUDDENLY TURN OFF AND WE HAVE TO DO THE "IN-AND-OUT" DANCE TO GET THE BAG TO TURN ON AGAIN. AT LEAST ONE TIME, THE BAG TURNED ON WHEN NO ONE WAS IN THE SEAT! THESE THINGS HAPPEN SOMETIMES WHEN THE CAR IS STILL IN PARK (BUT ENGINE TURNED ON), AND SOMETIMES WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION. TOTALLY RANDOM. THIS OCCURS (SO FAR) DURING CITY DRIVING. THE DEALER ORIGINALLY SAID THE PART WOULD PROBABLY ARRIVE MID OCTOBER, THEN LATE OCTOBER, ETC. I CALLED SUBARU HQ AND TALKED TO THEM ABOUT THE ISSUE. THEY WILL "ATTEMPT TO EXPEDITE" BUT SAID THE PART IS "ON BACK ORDER" WITH ETA MID NOVEMBER, THEN LATE NOVEMBER "MAYBE," BUT THEY REALLY AREN'T SURE WHEN THEY CAN GET THE PART. IN THE MEAN TIME, I AM NERVOUS ABOUT DRIVING WITH PASSENGERS IN THE FRONT SEAT WITHOUT PROPER PROTECTION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. I HAVE BEEN IN TOUCH A NUMBER OF TIMES WITH BOTH THE DEALER AND SUBARU HQ IN NJ REGARDING THIS ISSUE.

THE FORESTER HAS AN AUTOMATIC SYSTEM THAT TURNS OFF THE AIRBAGS FOR THE RIGHT SIDE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT WHEN NO-ONE IS SITTING THERE OR WHEN THEY DO NOT WEIGH ENOUGH TO ACTIVATE THE SYSTEM. SHOULD A PERSON NEED TO SIT ON A CUSHION IN THAT SEAT FOR WHATEVER REASON, THE SYSTEM DOES NOT THINK ANYONE IS THERE AND TURNS OFF THE AIRBAGS. I KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT NEED VARIOUS CUSHIONS FOR BACK SUPPORT OR OTHER HEALTH RELATED REASONS OR BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHORT TORSOS AND FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE SITTING HIGHTER. IF THEY USE THEIR PILLOWS OR CUSHIONS, THEY ARE NOT PROTECTED BY THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. IF THEY DON'T USE THEIR CUSHIONS, THEY ARE IN PAIN. I HAVE CONTACTED SUBARU AND THEY SAY THEY CANNOT CHANGE THE SYSTEM. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN THAT PASSENGERS WILL USUALLY USE THEIR CUSHIONS TO AVOID PAIN AND HOPE THERE IS NO ACCIDENT THAT WOULD NEED AIRBAG PROTECTION. IN MY OPINION, THERE SHOULD BE AN OVERRIDE TO THE AIRBAG DISABLE SYSTEM SO ADULTS NEEDING SEAT CUSHIONS CAN STILL BE PROTECTED BY THE AIRBAG SYSTEM.

FOR 2 MONTHS SINCE MAY 19, 2018, THE AIRBAG WARNING SENSOR LIGHT GOES ON MY DASHBOARD WHILE DRIVING AND THE PASSENGER AIRBAG 'OFF' WARNING LIGHT ALSO GOES ON ' SEE ATTACHED PHOTO. THIS OCCURRENCE HAPPENS ALMOST EVERY TIME I DRIVE MY VEHICLE. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TWICE FOR REPAIR BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. SUBARU ' STARLINK PROGRAM HAS NOTIFIED ME WITH NUMEROUS EMAILS THAT I SHOULD HAVE THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE FIXED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. AFTER NOT RECEIVING ANY SATISFACTION FROM THE DEALER, I CALLED AND WRITTEN TWICE TO SUBARU USA HEADQUARTERS IN CHERRY HILL, NJ EXPLAINING THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE OF HAVING NO ACTIVE PASSENGER AIRBAG WHILE DRIVING. THEY STATED THAT A PART HAS TO BE ORDERED TO REPAIR THIS SERIOUS ISSUE BUT IT HAS NOW BEEN 4 WEEKS SINCE MY INITIAL CALL TO HEADQUARTERS WITH NO RESULTS. I FEEL THAT THEY ARE STALLING AS THERE MAY NOT BE AN EASY FIX AVAILABLE. I'M EXTREMELY CONCERN TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT AN ACTIVE PASSENGER AIRBAG PROTECTION FOR THE SAFETY OF MY WIFE IF WE WERE IN AN ACCIDENT AND THERE WAS NO AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT.
