It is a known issue with subarus of this year that the engine will stall at random intervals when stopping, weather at a stop sign or stop light, warm or cold, fast stops or regular stopping. There is no consistency to it, completely random. There are no warning lights that appear, I have not taken this car to the dealer because after purchasing it I cannot afford to take it to the dealer. I purchased this car used for my elderly parents and this is a disturbing problem that could get them hurt or killed. Why has this KNOWN issue not been recalled? there are multiple service bulletins reported to NHTSA addressing this issue but no recall?
Vehicle has an automatic transmission and it stalls when stopping. There is no warning light on the dash. This happens more frequently when the vehicle is warm, in early operation it may only hesitate or run rough while stopping. A warm a stop is more likely to stall the vehicle than a slow stop. Hard braking at operating temperature will stall the vehicle without fail. This has been happening since I bought it and it occurs with each drive every day.
The contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that on numerous occasions while driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle hesitated. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that while shifted in reverse, the vehicle inadvertently shifted into drive independently. The contact turned off and restart the vehicle. The contact then stated that he was able navigate the vehicle back onto the road. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the warranty had expired but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 196,000.

The car will die/stop working at stop signs and at abrupt stops. The problem has been confirmed by a Subaru dealer, and it is a known safety concern, as Subaru put out a safety bulletin but came up short in actually recalling the cars affected. It has been confirmed as a faulty torque converter by a dealership service department. There have been no warnings or messages prior to the problem happening. It is a HUGE safety concern, as the car will die at lights and busy intersections, causing traffic to stop abruptly. It is an accident waiting to happen!!! Because my vehicle is out of warranty, Subaru will not cover the cost of replacing this DANGEROUS system failure.
Recently, while driving home in traffic, with the car in drive while braking, my car stalled in the middle of the road. Since then, it has happened 4 times. Upon breaking while the car is in Drive, the car stalls and Check Engine Light, Battery, Engine Oil, Oil Temp, AWD, and Traction Control Warning Light come on. When I shift the car into Park, turn off the car, and restart, the lights go away and the car runs smoothly. This is a huge safety concern when the car fails while I am actively driving and has almost caused accidents. I took the car to the dealership and they said that it needs a new torque converter (see Subaru Service Bulletin 16-90-13R https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10140492-9999.pdf). This is a huge safety liability and this issue should be recalled as the car stalling in the middle of traffic is dangerous.
Outback started jerking forward with an increase in RPMs and noise from engine. Malfunction was very alarming and could result in a traffic accident...especially at higher speeds and in traffic. No warning lamps/messages indicated from vehicle. Took vehicle to Subaru dealership and rode with mechanic. Was told by dealership that a new CVT (transmission) is needed at a quoted cost of $9,000+ (with only 110k miles on the vehicle). Found that a warranty extension was offered by Subaru (2017 CVT Warranty Extension Bulletin Number 16-107-17R) for customer complaints about this issue but not a recall. Contacted Subaru of America. Subaru of America offered minimal assistance and would not honor the extended warranty due to just falling outside of extended warranty period (due to driving fewer-than-average miles per year).
CVT was given a warranty extension. Subaru is aware that this is a KNOWN issue, otherwise they would not have given a warranty extension. A loud squealing occurs and a the RPMs increase when driving. This occurs in slower speed areas as well as on the highway. This is a dangerous problem as the transmission could give out while driving on the highway or interstate. The driver would then be forced to slow to a lower mph and possibly cause an accident. Since this is a known problem with this year, a recall should be given for Subaru to repair this CVT problem in all models. At the very least, if a person calls in to have this problem resolved, they should repair the problem since it's a known issue.
Purchased used Subaru 10/28/2021. While driving on highway the engine is running and trying to brake at the same time. Its frightening, It seems like the vehicle will stop at highway speed and my family & myself could be injured if not killed. I am taking my newly purchased vehicle for the second time to Post Oak Acura, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74145. Researched on my own the signs of highway driving & the engine attempted to stop. Many complaints located on line with with the final diagnosis of a "faulty failing torque convertor".
We have a engine stalling problem on a 2010 Subaru outback when braking it is a known problem with the transmission failing and Subaru extended a warrantee to 100,000 miles or 10 years but did not notify owners. Now at 110000 miles we are having similar problems. I don't think we should be penalized for driving less miles per year but have same issue. They admitted a problem but refuse to cover it.
11/21/2020 AT OIL TEMP LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT, AND VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL LIGHTS COME ON WHILE DRIVING AFTER AROUND 30 MINUTES ON A MAJOR ROUTE (NOT HIGHWAY) AFTER ALREADY BEING "FIXED" BY A DEALERSHIP. AT THE END OF AUGUST I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER BECAUSE ALL 3 LIGHTS HAD COME ON AFTER I HAD ARRIVED NEAR MY PLACE OF WORK. I HAD DRIVEN FOR 35 MINUTES ON THE HIGHWAY AND CRUISING LOCAL STREETS FOR A SPOT WHEN THEY CAME ON. WHEN I FIRST GOT BACK TO MY VEHICLE AFTER WORK (I HAD PARKED AND WAS WAITING UNTIL END OF DAY TO DEAL WITH IT) AND TURNED ON MY CAR - NO LIGHTS. I WAS NEARLY HOME WHEN ALL 3 CAME BACK ON (35 MINTUES OF HIGHWAY DRIVING). TOOK TO DEALER THAT WEEKEND WHERE THEY REPLACED ENGINE AIR FILTER, CABIN AIR FILTER, CVT- VALVE BODY AND BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FOR $1934.97 ON 9/21 THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON AFTER DRIVING FOR AROUND 20 MINUTES ON A 2 LANE ROUTE. DEALER HAD THE CAR FOR 1 WEEK AND ALL THEY COULD FIND / DO WAS CHANGE A BRAKE LIGHT BULB.

THE CAR MUST BE PUT BACK IN PARK AND TURNED BACK ON EVERY TIME IT STALLS. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN REAR ENDED MULTIPLE TIMES BECAUSE OF THE ABRUPT STOPPING CAUSED BY THE FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER.

THIS IS A SEVERE TRAFFIC SAFETY ISSUE AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH IF LARGE VEHICLE OR 18 WHEELER ETC IS FOLLOWING CLOSE ON HIGHWAY AND SUBARU DIES UPON BRAKING AND UNABLE TO KEEP MOVING AFTER BRAKES APPLIED. WE HAVE E-MAILED SUBARU HEADQUARTERS AND THEY REPLIED AS NOT THEIR PROBLEM. WE HAVE HAD A 50 YEAR PROFESSIONAL MASTER MECHANIC BUSINESS STATE THAT IS THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS FAULTY AND NOT ALLOWING THE CVT SYSTEM TO WORK AS SHOULD WHEN BRAKING AND VEHICLE WILL DIE. THERE IS PAST TSB ON THIS ISSUE BUT NO RECALL. DO NUMEROUS SUBARU OWNERS NEED TO NEEDLESSLY DIE IF NOT ALREADY BEFORE SOMEONE TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SERIOUS VEHICLE SAFETY ISSUE? AFTER BRINGING IN TO DEALER WAS ADVISED THE CVT CHAIN WAS SLIPPING AND ONLY THING THAT COULD BE DONE IS PURCHASE A NEW TRANSMISSION OR VEHICLE. THE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT WAS AT A COST OF 7900 DOLLARS AND NO OTHER OPTION WAS PROVIDED TO IMPROVE SAFETY IN THE VEHICLE. I MADE NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO HAVE SOA PROVIDE DETAILS ON WHAT MAINTENANCE COULD BE DONE TO TO PROTECT/EXTEND THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE FAILING TRANSMISSION OR IF THE TRANSMISSION COULD BE REBUILT TO IMPROVE SAFE OPERATION. SOA RESPONSE CONTINUES TO BE THEY WILL DISCUSS A LOYALTY PROGRAM FOR A NEW LEASE OR CAR BUT THE ONLY OPTION IS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ENTIRELY.

I WENT TO TIMMONS SUBARU IN LONG BEACH CA.I TOLD THEM ABOUT THE TSB-16-90-13R AND THAT MY VEHICLE IS DOING EXACTLY WHAT THAT BULLETIN IS SHOWING. I WAS INFORMED OVER AND OVER MY VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I KNEW THAT A WANTED THEM TO DO THE TSB. THEY REFUSED BECAUSE THEIR MECHANIC SAID IT NEEDED A NEW CVT TRANSMISSION AND THEY COULD NOT DO THAT WORK. THE OUTBACK WAS SHAKING AND VIBRATING AND HAVE LOW RPMS LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL. I DID NOT TRUST TIMMONS MECHANIC SO I TOOK TO MCKENNA SUBARU IN HUNTINGTON BEACH . THEY DID THE TSB AND NOW IT WORKS GREAT. IT DID NOT NEED A NEW CVT TRANSMISSION AND TIMMONS MECHANIC LIED TO ME AND WANTED TO UPSELL A NEW CVT TRANSMISSION AND WHEEL BEARING IN HIS REPORT. THEY REFUSED TO LISTEN TO ME REGARDING THE TSB.

SUBARU REFUSES TO ASSIST IN COST OF SIGNIFICANT REPAIR AS IT WAS DIAGNOSED 3 WEEKS OUT OF WARRANTY DESPITE THEIR PLEDGE TO CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE STRONGLY CONSIDERED FOR A RECALL AS A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE TO SUBARU.

AFTER SOME RESEARCH, THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ISSUED FOR UP TO 100K OR 10 YEARS THROUGH JULY 30, 2018. HOWEVER, THE ISSUE DID NOT START UNTIL AUGUST OF 2018 AND MY CAR WAS WELL OVER 100K AT THAT TIME. THERE ARE SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS IN HAVING A CAR DIE REPEATEDLY.

THE CONTACT DECLINED TO PAY FOR THE $1800.00 FEE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 1-373-484-69104 HOWEVER NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. I WENT ON A FEW SUBARU THREADS ONLINE AND SAW THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING. A NEW TORQUE CONVERTER WAS ORDER FROM SUBARU WHICH HAD A DIFFERENT PART NUMBER FROM THE ORIGINAL. SUBARU ADVISED THAT UPGRADES WERE MADE DUE TO PREVIOUS FAILURE ISSUES WITH TORQUE CONVERTER. TOTAL COST OF PARTS AND LABOR WAS $1238.78 AND WAS DONE ON 06/20/2017. FEW WEEKS AFTER WORK WAS DONE I RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM SUBARU REGARDING EXTENDED WARRANTY ON TRANSMISSION WORK AND REIMBURSEMENT IF JOB ALREADY DONE. I SUBMITTED MY CLAIM AND WAS DENIED BECAUSE MY CAR HAS A PREVIOUS SALVAGE HISTORY. I FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT A SALVAGE HISTORY VOIDS THE WARRANTY BUT I FEEL THE TORQUE CONVERTER PROBLEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE THROUGH A SAFETY RECALL. A FAILURE OF A PART THAT CAN CAUSE A CAR TO STALL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE. NEW UPGRADED TORQUE CONVERTER BY THE MANUFACTURER PROVES THEIR ACKNOWLEDGMENT THAT THE PREVIOUS PART HAS A FAULT. I AM NOT DISPUTING THEIR WARRANTY POLICY BUT DISPUTING THAT TORQUE CONVERTER FAILURE POSES A SAFETY ISSUE AND I AM REQUESTING A REIMBURSEMENT OF MONEY SPENT IN WHICH SUBARU HAS DENIED. THERE WERE ALSO 2 SOFTWARE UPDATES THAT WERE RELATED TO THE BRAKE AND TRANSMISSION SAFETY AND OPERATION. WE WERE CHARGED FOR ALL 3 EVEN THOUGH IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY RECALL.

I HAVE BEGAN TO KEEP A VIDEO LOG OF ALL THE TIMES THE VEHICLE WILL STALL DRIVING FROM MY HOME TO WORK AND OTHER TRIPS. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT SUBARU NEEDS TO ADDRESS. IT APPEARS THEY WERE MADE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE IN 2014 BUT DID NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT UNTIL 2017 AND EVEN THEN THEY ARE NOT DOING A RECALL BUT A "EXTENDED COVERAGE". THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS IT CAN HAPPEN WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC (FOR EXAMPLE) AND IT HAPPENS REPEATEDLY, UNEXPECTEDLY AND RANDOMLY. I URGE THE NHTSA IN THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TERMS TO ISSUE MANDATORY RECALL AND REPAIR ORDER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT LOSS OF LIFE AND SERIOUS INJURY. I GOOGLED THE TERM "TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER" FOR 2010 SUBARU OUTBACK AND FOUND THIS TO BE A COMMON COMPLAINT. I FEEL THIS SUBARU SHOULD BE RECALLING VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM AND FIXING IT. THE CONDITION IS SIMILAR TO COMING TO A STOP IN A MANUAL TRANSMISSION EQUIPPED VEHICLE WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH PEDAL. I INITIALLY ATTRIBUTED THIS TO THE NEW TIRES AND SLIGHTLY OVERLY INFLATED TIRE PRESSURE. I PRECISELY ADJUSTED THE TIRE PRESSURE AND SPENT THE NEXT FEW MONTHS WAITING FOR THE TIRES TO "SETTLE IN" AND SMOOTH OUT. MY WIFE STARTED DRIVING THE CAR REGULARLY AND DID NOT MENTION ANY ISSUE ABOUT THE RIDE. I DROVE THE CAR SEVERAL TIMES AFTERWARDS AND ON EACH TRIP FOUND THE CAR VERY VERY UNCOMFORTABLE TO DRIVE. THINKING THAT THE CAUSE OF THE SHAKING WAS THE OEM TIRES, I REMOVED THE CONTI CONTISPORT TIRES AND REPLACED THEM WITH MICHELIN DEFENDER XT'S FROM COSTCO. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, I NOTICED THAT THE TIRES WERE NO SMOOTHER THAN THE OEM'S. I HAD COSTCO REMOVE AND REBALANCE THE TIRES. THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKE AND VIBRATION REMAINED EVEN AFTER THE REBALANCE. HE TOLD ME TO HAVE THE ALTERNATOR CHECKED OUT. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER ON JANUARY 27, 2012. THEY RAN THREE DIFFERENT DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT FINE. I AM SO AFRAID THE CAR WILL CUT OUT ON ME AND I WILL LOSE CONTROL ON THE ROAD. SUBARU OUTBACK 2010 WITH CVT TRANSMISSION BOUGHT NEW. NUMEROUS FAILURES. THE TRANSMISSION FIRST FAILED DUE TO A SOLENOID OPEN CIRCUIT THAT DISABLED THE CAR. CODE P2762 ( LAST WEEK IN MARCH, ABOUT 2,600 MILES). THAT WAS FIXED. AFTER THIS EVENT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD ON OCCASION DISENGAGE WHILE STILL ON DRIVE. WHILE DRIVING SLOWLY AND AFTER APPLYING BRAKES TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN. THE GAS PEDAL WOULD BE DEPRESSED, THE ENGINE WOULD ROAR BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. THE TRANSMISSION WOULD RE-ENGAGE AFTER SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL OR PARK AND BACK TO DRIVE. THE FIRST TIME THIS EVENT WAS REPORTED TO THE SUBARU DEALER A NUMBER OF CODES CAME UP; C0057, C0045, C0231, C0232, C0282. SUBARU TOLD THE DEALER TO ERASE THE CODES AND RE-PROGRAM THE SOFTWARE. THIS EVENT HAS OCCURRED THREE TIMES SINCE THEN (LAST WEEK OF JULY 2010, ABOUT 9,000 MILES). THE NEXT TIME WAS LAST WEEK IN AUGUST, ABOUT 10,200 MILES. SINCE THE SOFTWARE WAS RE-PROGRAMMED NO CODES APPEAR EVEN THOUGH THE EVENTS ARE IDENTICAL. THIS EVENT HAPPENED AGAIN IN DECEMBER 2010. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER (1/27/11). NO CODES WERE FOUND. THIS FAILURE ALSO RECURRED WHENEVER HE WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH. THE STALLING HAS OCCURRED ABOUT A DOZEN TIMES IN THREE MONTHS. THE ENGINE TRIES TO STALL UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS ABOUT 50% OF THE TIME, I.E. THE DASH LIGHTS COME ON, AND THE A/C COMPRESSOR AND FAN CUT OFF. THE PROBLEM OCCURS PRIMARILY WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONING IS ON, AND THE TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 85 DEGREES. THIS IS FAR MORE PREVALENT WHEN THE A/C IS RUNNING. TODAY (SUN 7/25) I WAS APPROACHING A RIGHT TURN, THE A/C WAS RUNNING. I STARTED THE PROCESS OF SLOWING DOWN THE CAR BY FULLY DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH AND BRAKING. WHEN I STARTED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO ENTER THE TURN I BARELY COULD DO SO. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THE ENGINE THIS TIME STALLED. GENERALLY YOU CAN HEAR THE ENGINE SHUDDER BEFORE A STALL, IN THIS CASE IT DID NOT. IT ALMOST RESULTED IN THE VEHICLE HITTING A POLE WITH MY TWO YOUNG CHILDREN INSIDE. THE CAR RESTARTED RIGHT AWAY AND I WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATIONS. DURING THE COURSE OF THIS SAME DAY ON AT LEAST TWO MORE OCCASION I FULLY DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH TO EITHER SLOW THE CAR OR COAST AND THE CAR SHUDDER INDICATING A POTENTIAL STALL BUT THE CAR COMPENSATED. I NOTICED THAT THE MAJORITY OF TIMES AS I WOULD ENGAGE THE CLUTCH TO DOWN SHIFT THE TACK WOULD DROP AND THE CAR WOULD SHUTTER AND THE TACK CAME BACK UP. THE TIMES WHEN THE TACK DROPPED AND THEN DIED IT DID NOT SHUTTER. THE PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ON. I THEN HAD A NEAR COLLISION SHIFTING FROM 4TH TO 3RD IN A BUSY T-INTERSECTION AND CALLED SERVICE THE NEXT MORNING, 6/10/10 AND SCHEDULED TO TAKE THE CAR IN ON 6/14/10 AND DID NOT USE THE AIR CONDITIONER AT ALL. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DUPLICATED THE PROBLEM AND HAD A SUBARU ENGINEER LOOK AT IT. THEY ERASED THE CAR'S MEMORY AND WILL HAVE A PROGRAM WRITTEN TO HOPEFULLY FIX THE PROBLEM. SINCE THE PROGRAM WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR A LONG TIME THEY ARE GIVING ME THE CAR BACK TO DRIVE AND BELIEVE THAT SINCE THEY ERASED THE CAR'S MEMORY THAT MAY FIX THE PROBLEM.
