The contact owns a 2011 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the passenger’s side seat near the hip area between the passenger and the door had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The dealer referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer confirmed that due to the mileage on the vehicle, the manufacturer was not obligated to assist with the repair. The failure mileage was 230,000.

Loss of steering wheel electronic functions including paddle shifters radio volume and Airbag light illuminated. Looked up faults and found NHTSA campaign ID 10V283000 which describes cable damage from Subaru manufacturing. According to Subaru and NHTSA, our vehicle was manufactured 2 months after "Affected" vehicles. Subaru unwilling to work on problem as it is not listed in affect vehicles, yet clearly the problems found are exact match to campaign list. I will seek outside confirmation of failure and then request NHTSA to update the affect vehicles list so Subaru can fix a safety issue for all affected vehicles.

MY 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK IS PART OF THE AIRBAG RECALL. I HAVE PHONED SUBARU 6 TIMES AND THEY REFUSE TO FIX MY AIRBAGS. THE REASON IS THAT I LIVE ON A SMALL ISLAND IN HAWAII THAT DOES NOT HAVE A DEALERSHIP OR EVEN A CAR REPAIR SHOP. THE VEHICLE MUST BE SHIPPED TO OAHU TO BE FIXED AND SUBARU REFUSES TO DO THIS.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE SUBARU IN MISSOULA, MT IN OCTOBER OF 2019 TO FIX THE TAKATA AIR BAG RECALL. IN JULY OF 2019 I RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I CALLED THE NUMBER ON THE RECALL NOTICE 855-371-5406. I WAS INFORMED THAT SUBARU HAD PUT IN THE SAME NON-WORKING, UNSAFE PARTS THAT WERE IN THE AIRBAG PRIOR TO THE 2019 RECALL. SUBARU DID THIS TO BUY TIME TO GET THE PARTS NEEDED TO ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM IN STOCK. TAKATA TOLD ME THIS. FOR NEARLY A YEAR I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AROUND THINKING THAT MY PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WAS SAFE. SUBARU WILL NOT ADDRESS THIS BUT THEY DO WANT TO INCONVENIENCE THEIR CUSTOMERS A SECOND TIME. SUBARU CUSTOMERS SHOULD HAVE BEEN INFORMED. INSTEAD, SUBARU WAS DECEITFUL AND NOW INTEND TO STEAL MORE TIME FROM THE CUSTOMERS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM THAT THEY SAID WAS 'LIFE THREATENING.'

THE CONTACT CALLED THE GANLEY SUBARU OF BEDFORD LOCATED AT 123 BROADWAY AVE, BEDFORD, OH 44146, AND THE TECHNICIAN DECLINED TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT A CASE NUMBER. THE CONTACT WAS NOT GIVEN A CALLBACK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 113,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HIS WIFE WAS ATTEMPTING TO PARALLEL PARK THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED COLLIDING WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS WIFE SHIFTED TO DRIVE, THE ENGINE REVVED AND SHE LOST CONTROL THE VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTO BODY REPAIR FACILITY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO RAFFERTY SUBARU (4700 WEST CHESTER PIKE, NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA 19073 PHONE: (610) 353-6900) WHO STATED THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND A CAUSE FOR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED APOLOGETIC GESTURES REGARDING THE MATTER, HOWEVER, A CASE WAS NOT OPENED. THE CONTACT STATED THEY FOUND THAT THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN HIS STATE OF RESIDENCY REGARDING THE SAME FAILURE HIS WIFE HAD EXPERIENCED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000. *BF*JB

THE DEALER THAT PRODUCED THESE TROUBLES REFUSE TO SUPPORT THE COST OF REPAIR.

TAKATA RECALL. I RECEIVED NOTICE AND RESPONDED. CALLED SUBARU DEALERS AND SOONEST THEY CAN SCHEDULE IS NOVEMBER 2019. ROUGHLY 7 MONTHS OUT. THIS RECALL IS A BIG DEAL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED IN A TIMELY MATTER. 7 MONTHS IS TO MUCH. WITHIN A MONTH IS ACCEPTABLE.

TAKATA RECALL - ALSO, WIPER MOTOR SAFETY RECALL. I'VE ATTEMPTED TO WORK WITH SUBARU TO GET THESE TWO RECALLS ADDRESSED, AND MADE TWO PHONE CALLS IN EARLY APRIL, AND AFTER BEING TOLD TO WAIT AND BE CONTACTED BY AN APPROVED DEALERSHIP, THERE WAS NO FOLLOW-UP AND NO APPOINTMENT SET. AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS OF WAITING I CONTACTED SUBARU AGAIN, THIS TIME THROUGH EMAIL ON MAY 20TH, AND WAS AGAIN TOLD TO WAIT TO BE CONTACTED BY THE CLOSEST APPROVED DEALERSHIP, WHICH IS MORE THAN 40 MILES AWAY IN MY CASE. THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS, SUBARU HAS MADE NO ATTEMPT TO ACCOMMODATE THE DISTANCE OR TIME REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE REPAIR. STILL, I'VE DONE AS THEY ASKED AND WAITED TO BE CONTACTED BY MY CLOSEST APPROVED DEALERSHIP (CHATHAM PARKWAY SUBARU), AND AGAIN THERE WAS NO FOLLOW-UP. I'VE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO GET THESE RECALLS ADDRESSED SINCE APRIL 4TH, AND HAVE GROWN INCREASINGLY FRUSTRATED WITH HOW DIFFICULT ITS BEEN TO GET THEIR ATTENTION. TAKATA RECALL. A SUBARU DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE AIRBAG (ACCORDING TO THEIR SERVICE RECORDS). HOWEVER, SUBARU CORPORATE CONTINUED TO SEND ME RECALL NOTICES. NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED. 1) THEY REPLACED MY AIRBAG AND FORGOT TO TELL SUBARU. OK OUTCOME 2) THEY REPLACED MY AIRBAG, AND UPDATED A DIFFERENT CAR WITH SUBARU (WHICH WON'T GET RECALL NOTICES ANYMORE). PASSENGERS IN THAT CAR AT AT LETHAL RISK NOW. 3) THEY DIDN'T REPLACE MY AIRBAG, AND ACTUALLY PUT THAT AIRBAG INTO A DIFFERENT CAR. MY PASSENGERS ARE AT LETHAL RISK NOW. I ASKED THE SERVICE PERSON TO INVESTIGATE, BUT HE JUST SAID "IT'S DONE, DON'T WORRY" AIRBAG REPLACEMENT WAS NOVEMBER 2016. THE LAST SERVICE WAS THIS WEEK.

I TRIED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT THE FIRST WEEK IN MAY AND THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THEY CALLED ME. I'VE BEEN WAITING A YEAR. AT 33 WEEKS, THIS IS THE FARTHEST SHE'S EVER COME ALONG IN A PREGNANCY. IF THIS BABY COMES, THEN IT MEANS SOMEONE IN OUR FAMILY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SIT IN OUR CAR IF WE ALL GO OUT TOGETHER. TAKATA RECALL. SUBARU AND TAKATA AIRBAG PROBLEMS. MY OUTBACK HAS A RECALL AND I CALLED SUBARU CORPORATE ABOUT A WEEK AGO. I TALKED TO SOMEONE BECAUSE MY WIFE IS PREGNANT AND DRIVES OUR 4 YEAR OLD GIRL IN THE CAR. MY WIFE DOESN'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR (THE DETAILS OF THE RECALL ARE OUTLINED BELOW). IT MAY BE UP TO 3 MONTHS UNTIL THEY GET THE PART TO FIX IT. I WAS TOLD BY SUBARU CORPORATE TO GO TO THE LOCAL SUBARU DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULD GET US A CAR FROM THEIR FLEET OR A RENTAL FROM ENTERPRISE. WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP I WAS PUT ON A WAITING LIST. I CALLED BACK TO CORPORATE - THEY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEN I WAS TOLD THAT THE DEALERSHIP DOESN'T USE ENTERPRISE AND ONLY HAS THEIR OWN FLEET. I ASKED IF WE COULD GET A RENTAL CAR AND GET REIMBURSED AND THEY SAID NO. NO RESOLUTION YET.

THE PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG INDICATOR, WITH AN ADULT SITTING IN THE SEAT, RANDOMLY SHOWS THE AIRBAG ON/OFF. THERE IS NO CONSISTENCY TO WHETHER THE AIRBAG WILL SHOW AS FUNCTIONING, WHICH MAKES THE SYSTEM NON-FUNCTIONING BY ANY MEASURE. THIS IS A KEY SAFETY FEATURE THAT SUBARU ADVERTISES AND SELLS VEHICLES BY AND IT SIMPLY DOES NOT FUNCTION. SUBARU HAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE AND THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLAIMS THAT THEY CANNOT FIND AND ERROR CODE INDICATING THERE IS AN ISSUE. THE IMPLICATION BEING THAT I AM MAKING UP THE ISSUE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SIMILAR ISSUE TO WHAT WAS OUTLINED IN THE 2012 SUBARU IMPREZA AIRBAG SENSOR RECALL. BOTH CASES INVOLVE THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR FAILING WITH AN ADULT SITTING IN THE SEAT. IF YOU NEVER KNOW IF THE AIRBAG IS GOING TO WORK, IT IS A FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM. THIS ISN'T A PROBLEM THAT IS GOING TO BE RECOGNIZED OR FIXED WITHOUT A MANDATORY RECALL OR A LAWSUIT.

I DROVE THE CAR STRAIGHT TO MY SUBARU DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR HAD FAILED. I WAS ALSO TOLD THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT WAS TO REPLACE THE SEAT AT WELL OVER $1000. I WAS STILL LEFT WITH THE PROBLEM OF THE SEAT BELT CHIME. THE DEALERSHIP WOULDN'T DISABLE THE CHIME SO I SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR A SOLUTION. WHAT I FOUND IS THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2011 OUTBACKS. I DID ALSO FIND OUT HOW TO DISABLE THE SEAT BELT CHIME. BECAUSE THIS IS SUCH A COSTLY REPAIR AND A COMMON PROBLEM, I HAVE TO BELIEVE THERE ARE MANY SUBARU OWNERS DRIVING AROUND WITH UNPROTECTED PASSENGERS HAVING DISABLING THEIR SEAT BELT CHIMES AND HAVING NO AIR BAG PROTECTION. IN FAIRNESS TO SUBARU, I CONTACTED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY OFFERED TO SPLIT THE COST OF THE REPAIR. I TRIED THIS SEVERAL TIMES AS I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION. THOUGH THE LONG OFF RAMP DID SLOW ME DOWN, AT ABOUT 15 MPH (I THINK) I PLOWED THE LEFT FRONT OF MY CAR INTO THE FORD RANGER IN FRONT OF ME. THIS IMPRESSIVELY CRUSHED THE LEFT FRONT SIDE OF MY CAR AND MY AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE POINT OF IMPACT WAS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FRONT BUMPER, BUT IT HIT AT THE UPPER 2-3 INCHES OF THE BUMPER. SPECIFICALLY, IT TURNS ON AND OFF FREQUENTLY WHEN MY WIFE (APPROXIMATELY 120 POUNDS) IS SEATED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG ACTIVATION SENSOR. MY WIFE, WHO WEIGHS APPROX. 125 LBS, OFTEN SITS IN THAT SEAT. THE AIR BAG SENSOR LIGHT MIGHT GO ON, OR IT MIGHT NOT. SOMETIMES SHE CAN SHIFT HER WEIGHT AND HAVE IT COME ON. OTHER TIMES IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT SHE DOES, IT WILL NOT GO ON. WE CAN BE RIDING ALONG WITH THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, FOR NO REASON, IT WILL GO OFF. THEN, INEXPLICABLY, IT MIGHT, OR MIGHT NOT, COME BACK ON. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A LOCAL SUBARU DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS THE WAY THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IS MADE AND THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. THEY SAID THAT IT IS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW FOR THEM TO MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS AND THAT I SHOULD JUST MAKE SURE MY WIFE WEARS HER SEAT BELT WHEN WE'RE DRIVING. THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG ACTIVATION SENSOR. MY WIFE, WHO WEIGHS APPROX. 125 LBS, OFTEN SITS IN THAT SEAT. THE AIR BAG SENSOR LIGHT MIGHT GO ON, OR IT MIGHT NOT. SOMETIMES SHE CAN SHIFT HER WEIGHT AND HAVE IT COME ON. OTHER TIMES IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT SHE DOES, IT WILL NOT GO ON. WE CAN BE RIDING ALONG WITH THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, FOR NO REASON, IT WILL GO OFF. THEN, INEXPLICABLY, IT MIGHT, OR MIGHT NOT, COME BACK ON. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A LOCAL SUBARU DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS THE WAY THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IS MADE AND THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. THEY SAID THAT IT IS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW FOR THEM TO MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS AND THAT I SHOULD JUST MAKE SURE MY WIFE WEARS HER SEAT BELT WHEN WE'RE DRIVING. I HAVE TOLD THE SUBARU DEALER(S) THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT SAYS "OFF" UNLESS THE PASSENGER WEIGHS OVER 150 LBS OR SO. THE DEALER(S) DENY KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. HOWEVER, IT IS ON A SUBARU BLOG AND THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT. THE DEALER IS UNABLE TO TELL ME IF THE AIRBAG IS WORKING OR NOT. MY BRAKE PEDAL MAKES A CLICKING NOISE WHEN I RELEASE THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE SUBARU DEALER TOLD ME HE KNEW THIS HAPPENED TO ALL OF THE 2010 MODELS BUT DIDN'T REALIZE IT WAS HAPPENING TO THE 2011 MODELS AND HE SAID THERE IS NOTHING HE CAN DO ABOUT IT UNTIL SUBARU COMES OUT WITH A RECALL. THE SENSOR TURNS OFF INTERMITTENTLY WHEN MY WIFE SITS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT (5 FT, 4 INCHES, 110 LBS). IT WILL ALSO TURN OFF WHEN SHE SHIFTS HER SITTING POSITION. THE SENSOR WILL REMAIN OFF, REGARDLESS OF HOW SHE IS SITTING, FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME (80+ MILES) OR UNTIL I RESTART THE CAR. I SPOKE WITH TWO SUBARU DEALERS AND THEY SAID THAT THEY HAVE SEEN THIS ISSUE WITH LIGHTER PASSENGERS AND DON'T THING A RECALIBRATION WILL HELP DUE TO THE SENSOR'S SENSITIVITY. *TR

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. WE BOUGHT IT DUE TO HIGH SAFETY RATINGS AND OTHER FEATURES. THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHILE MY WIFE (WHO IS 115 LBS) SITS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THE FRONT AIRBAG SENSOR SWITCHES THE AIRBAG ON AND OFF RANDOMLY. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND HAD IT INSPECTED. THEIR FINDINGS WERE THAT THE CAR IS WORKING AS DESIGNED. THE AIRBAG IS TURNING OFF WHEN HER WEIGHT IS NOT IN AN EXACT SPOT. I LOOKED UP THE PROBLEM ONLINE AND HAD MULTIPLE HITS FOR COMPLAINTS FROM OWNERS OF THE SAME CAR (AND THE 2010 MODEL). WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO MAKE SURE MY WIFE SITS UP STRAIGHT WITH HER LEGS EXTENDED AND THE SEAT FULLY UPRIGHT AND BACK TO HELP THE AIRBAG SENSOR GET A MORE ACCURATE READING. OBVIOUSLY IT IS NOT REASONABLE TO EXPECT A PERSON TO SIT UNMOVING FOR AN EXTENDED LENGTH IN A CAR. ALSO, IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION, HER WEIGHT WOULD NATURALLY SHIFT AND THUS THE AIRBAG MAY NOT DEPLOY. TO ME, THIS NEGATES THE SAFETY RATING FOR THE FRONT PASSENGER AND DISCRIMINATES AGAINST SMALLER ADULTS WHO RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. MANY OF THE COMPLAINTS I READ HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH ADULTS UP TO 140 LBS, AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLICATED THE PROBLEM WITH A MAN WEIGHING 125 LBS. *TT

THE PASSENGER AIRBAG DOES NOT TURN ON WHEN ADULT FEMALE ~120LBS IS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. MINIMUM WEIGHT TO CONSISTENTLY ACTIVATE AIRBAG SEEMS TO BE ABOUT 140LBS. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY RE-CALIBRATED THE PASSENGER SEAT WEIGHT SENSOR BUT THIS DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF RANDOMLY WHEN I AM SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I AM 5'3 110LBS. THE SENSORS WERE RECALIBRATED WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. EVEN IF YOU SIT IN ONE SPOT AND NOT MOVE THE SENSOR WILL TURN ON AND OFF RANDOMLY. THE DEALERSHIP STILL DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF INDICATOR WOULD ILLUMINATE INTERMITTENTLY WHENEVER THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANTS WEIGHT WAS 100 POUNDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURE; HOWEVER THERE WAS NOT A REMEDY FOR THE REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AIR BAG INDICATOR RANDOMLY SHOWED THE STATUS 'ON' OR 'OFF' WHEN THE SEAT WAS OCCUPIED BY AN ADULT PASSENGER. NO PATTERN COULD BE IDENTIFIED FOR THE INDICATION ALTHOUGH WE TRIED EVERY PERTURBATION OF SITTING, FASTENING SEAT BELT, CLOSING DOOR, STARTING ENGINE, ETC. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR(S) WAS REPLACED AS DEFECTIVE, NOW THE INDICATOR NEVER INDICATES 'ON', ALWAYS 'OFF' REGARDLESS OF ACTIONS AS ABOVE. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED A SECOND TIME, THIS TIME IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SENSOR(S) WERE BEING INHIBITED BECAUSE OF SEAT COVERS DISTRIBUTING THE WEIGHT IN SUCH A WAY AS TO 'FOOL' THE SENSORS. IT TOOK A 180 LB. PERSON TO ACTIVATE THE SENSOR, [A 170 LB. PERSON DID NOT] WITH THE SEAT COVERS ON, THE SENSORS APPEARED TO OPERATE CORRECTLY WITHOUT THE SEAT COVERS. THIS RAISES THE QUESTION OF WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION, ARE LARGE BUTTOCKS REQUIRED GIVEN THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE WEIGHT SENSORS IN THE SEAT, HOW ABOUT A SMALL FRAMED 120 LB ADULT. THE ANSWER IS CLEAR, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG SHOULD ALWAYS BE ON UNLESS MANUALLY TURNED OFF BY THE USER. SUBARU MUST PROVIDE A PROGRAMMING OPTION TO THE OWNER TO DEFAULT THE AIRBAG STATUS TO ALWAYS 'ON'. MY TOYOTA AND HONDA BOTH PROVIDES A KEY LOCK OPTION TO DISABLE THE UNIT, DEFAULT IS, AND SHOULD BE REQUIRED, TO BE 'ON'. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND SUBARU IS OPENING THEMSELVES TO CLASS ACTIONS, AND HEAVEN FORBID THE FIRST ACCIDENT WHEN THE UNIT FAILS TO DEPLOY BECAUSE IT WAS NOT ARMED BECAUSE OF QUIRKY WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS. I BELIEVE THAT A PREVENTIVE RECALL SHOULD BE ORDERED IF SUBARU DOES NOT UNILATERALLY PROVIDE AN ALWAYS 'ON' DEFAULT OPTION FOR THE VEHICLE.

THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AIRBAG INDICATOR LIGHT SHOWS OFF EVEN THOUGH OCCUPANT IS WITHIN LIMITS STIPULATED VERBALLY BY SUBARU SALESMAN. PASSENGER AIRBAG IS OFTEN TURNED OFF, EVEN THOUGH A PERSON IS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THIS IS REPEATABLE. OFTEN, WHEN MY PASSENGER (120 LBS, 5'7" TALL) SITS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, THE AIRBAG REMAINS IN THE OFF POSITION (AS IF NO ONE IS SITTING IN THAT SEAT). I'VE NOTICED THAT WHEN THE PASSENGER SITS, AND PUTS THEIR FEET DIRECTLY ON THE FLOOR, THE PASSENGER'S KNEES AND UPPER THIGH RIGHT ABOVE THE KNEE DO NOT MAKE CONTACT WITH THE SEAT. WHEN SITTING IN THIS POSITION, THE AIRBAG WILL REMAIN IN THE OFF POSITION. WHEN THE PASSENGER SITS, WITH LEGS FULLY EXTENDED, SO THAT THE KNEE AND UPPER THIGH MAKE BETTER CONTACT WITH THE SEAT, THE AIRBAG IS ENABLED. WITH THE RIGHT COMBINATION OF PASSENGER LENGTH, AND POSITION OF THE PASSENGER'S LEGS WHILE SITTING, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE AIRBAG TO REMAIN IN THE OFF POSITION, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A FULL-SIZED ADULT SITTING IN THAT SEAT.
