My CVT Transmission started having problems with the Valve Body inside the transmission. On acceleration from a complete stop my vehicle would start "bucking" hard causing a violent back and forth rocking or "jerking" of the drive train and vehicle. I did not request a inspection of the failed Valve Body when I paid to have it replaced. The life and safety of myself and others are at severe risk of injury or death resulting from a complete failure of the Valve Body component when driving on highways or other roads because without any warning the vehicle will come to a complete stop which would cause a rear end collision possibly at highway speeds. Also I'm concerned about the Torque Converter having a failure because of the intense pressure from the failed Valve Body with the constant "bucking" on acceleration. I took my vehicle to both a independent transmission shop and a Subaru Service Center and the Independent Transmission Shop told me I needed a new transmission and the Subaru Service Department kept telling me they didn't know what was causing my vehicle symptoms. Subaru of America extended the warranty on my vehicle to 100,000 miles because of the problems with their CVT Transmissions but because I bought my vehicle used with over 100,000 miles on it they refused to either pay for 50% or 100% of the replacement cost. No warning Lights came on but when the Valve Body completely fails then the warning lights will illuminate. My Subaru Case Number that was DENIED is (Case# 250820-1801058) for Subaru extended warranty for CVT Transmission.

Torque converter issue that causes stalling similar to a manual transmission vehicle. The issue should have been a full recall but instead was only a "bulletin." For my own safety, I am stuck paying several thousand dollars for an issue the manufacturer is aware of but refused to cover by full recall. It is not just wear-and-tear, and is a danger to myself and other drivers on the road. And because the previous owner(s) were negligent in making sure the vehicle was repaired under warranty, I'm left paying a giant, unexpected bill. Does that seem like the right thing to you?
When coming to a stop the RPM's drop and the engine will stall, similar to not engaging the clutch on a manual transmission. Luckily there has not been a crash to date but the condition has worsened to the point it is no longer safe to drive and must be repaired. This is a known safety flaw with the torque converter and Subaru denied any responsibility or assistance in the quoted $2,400 repair.
Coolant leak, steering power fluid leak, break pad leak, gasoline line leak, seat heater, clicking noise after turning off car, leaking seats and rear view mirror also leaking, steering wheel expanding due to possible air bag, heater and ac vents lose and also chemical smell/gas/coolant coming from front and back of car, sunroof not secured. Every wiring wet, charger port in middle compartment wet when plugging something in. Everything auto does not work. Car sounds like something is constantly leaking air or gas somewhere, even when off. My safety was at risk by having severe chemical burns on my skin everywhere, hair falling out due to exposure, almost passing out while driving due to inhaling components, low visibility due to auto dimming in rear view and side mirrors. The problem has not been confirmed due to me being in a financial bind at the moment. The car has not been inspected. due to financial problems I am not able to get the vehicle looked at. There were no warnings except for the blue temp light came on but immediately will shut back off. Car also severely vibrates when turning on. They started appearing around against of 2024
Bought vehicle from Carvana, immediately noticed transmission shudder issues when driving near 50 mph. Brought vehicle in to multiple repair facilities. It had warped brakes, bad calipers, needed a new torque converter at least and the repair shop recommended a total transmission replacement. The whole vehicle shakes when driving near that speed or braking.
Seems like a transmission problem on my Subaru Outback. While braking to a stop the car shudders and then the engine stalls creating a hazardous situation. I'm forced to put the car in park and restart the engine. This sounds like a common issue with the tourque converter on these cars. This problem happens on a near daily basis unless you drive with such extreme caution you can sometimes avoid the issue.

The car shudders when we come to a stop, sometimes cuts off completely. I am told this is a faulty torque converter. This is my 5th subaru, so I love the car, but, I have a family now, and I am not sure this is a safe vehicle for them to be in, please help me!!
Transmission failure at 55mph my couldn't shift and the motor revved up all the way to the redline mark and wouldn't stop when I tried to stop it the reaction control lights came on the cruise control light was flashing the emergency break light was flashing every light on my dash was flashing there was a terrible vibration in the steering wheel the Transmission was humming really loud and just got worse the car just kept going and not stopping I could have hit someone another person a car I could have hit anything instead I choose the ditch and cornfield the car has been looked at by a repair shop and everything has been duplicated by them the problem hasn't gone away or changed all the codes were cleared and as soon as it starts up they all came back signaling the transmission and torque converter the sounds are still there also upon start up the engine starts fine but the car can't be driven can't get above 15 mph without vibration and loud noises and the motor revving up without notice this is very dangerous you can't control the car
My mechanic tells me my Outback's K frame/engine cradle is rotting out where the control arms are attached. This is obviously a common problem with this run of vehicles, and leads to catastrophic failure. Further, the rear brake lines have rotted, and the geniuses ran them above the fuel tank, which would have to be dropped in order to repair. I believe this is a common enough problem to warrant investigation.
Vehicle engine/transmission/torque converter dies when coming to a stop. This is especially an issue when having to stop suddenly and get going again quickly as the vehicle has to be put in neutral, restarted, and put back in drive. It is a safety issue at traffic lights, traffic signals, and in stop and go traffic that has resulted in a multitude of near-miss rear end collisions that put my life and my families lives in danger. There is a service bulletin from Subaru (Bulletin Number: 16-90-13R; Revised: 02/15/18) that addresses a similar issue, but fails to mention the vehicle engine dying and the inherent safety issues that comes with the engine shutting off.
October 2019 Torque Converter failed, with unexpected stall outs & difficulty re-starting at stops. This was potentially dangerous, as driver could not get out of way of approaching vehicles.
The left front engine cradle collapsed due to rust while driving. this caused the car to swerve to the left, and when the brakes were applied, it also swerved left. The car was almost undriveable. The failure put the driver of the car at risk, and luckily it happened in city driving, and not on the highway. The engine cradle is a component of the frame of the car, and should not be rusting out after 130,000 miles. This is why I think this model may need to be subject to investigation and possible recall. The Subaru Dealer (Cityside Subaru) looked at the car and confirmed that the left front cradle collapsed due to rust. They say the repair would cost $2800. There was no warning or indication prior to failure. In fact, we have had this vehicle continuously serviced at the dealership since 2011, and since 2016 we have spent over $16,000 in repairs, including various front wheel components. I would have expected the dealer to notify us if there was a potential problem. Because they didn't I feel this is a catastrophic failure that could be dangerous in any situation, especially at high speeds.

As I was driving my car it began to shudder. The lights on my dash turned on (engine, traction, oil, and break). I was in the middle of the road in ongoing traffic. The car behind me was able to swerve around in time. Cautiously, I was able to take the car to a mechanic. The valve body on the car needed to be replaced. This is typical for this year of Subaru. The dealer verified the issue and quoted me on the price.
While driving the car and stepping on the breaks really to avoid something in the road, the engine stalls and loses power requiring the driver to turn the key and restart the vehicle. My safety is a risk because if this happens on the street or highway with other vehicles around it could cause a major accident. This issue has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service however, a call to my local dealership confirmed they have heard of this issue in the past and suggested it was the torque converter. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance or others. There were no warning lamps or any other indicators of this issue prior to the issue. They first started to appear a few years after owning the vehicle.
The valve body malfunctioned causing improper gear shifts. The vehicle would breifly stop acceleration at 20 mph, before forcefully shifting into 2nd gear. For 2 years there were no warning lights, codes or messages, nor would it reproduce the malfunction when a mechanic inspected it. The issue progressed to the point of not shifting into 1st gear and having no acceleration at a stoplight. At this point warning lights and codes were produced indicating the value body was the source of the issue. Although I was able to avoid an accident, there were several near incidents of being rear ended.

2011 Subaru Outback has low rpm/idle stalling condition. This has caused a very dangerous safety issue while in traffic on the highway , while slowing in traffic. Several times I narrowly escaped an accident. This condition can prove deadly. There is currently a TSB 16-90-13r. This is not a recall and it should be. All years 2010-2012 especially on the Subaru Outback have been affected. The fix is a very expensive Torque converter replacement. The issue is so bad, Subaru changed the torque converter design for 2013, so again I say, why no recall and fix from Subaru? Thank you
A/C Compressor locks up, and serpentine belt flies off and stops power steering. Stalls due to this locking up.
Transmission failed on my 2011 Subaru Outback as I was entering the freeway, putting me in a very dangerous situation and at risk for being hit by other drivers. I didn't know it was transmission failure until I took it to a service center and they told me my transmission had failed and would need to be either rebuilt or replaced. Multiple dash warning lights came on as the car was stalling out. The repair cost me $5,600 to rebuild. The dealer said they would only replace it at a cost of $8,900. Neither dealer or Subaru customer service were helpful. I've taken very good care of the car, done routine maintenance and it only had 119,000 miles on it. The transmission shop said they are seeing a number of failures with the CVT transmission.
Vehicle has under 90k miles been regularly maintained and serviced. While driving engine light came on for engine overheating. Stopped driving vehicle. Called local Subaru dealer for diagnostic. Diagnostic revealed several unknown problems including transmission needs to be replaced. Since vehicle has under 100 k miles and is only 11 years old. I could not believe that this problem occurred ( note transmission replacement is over $8000). I took the vehicle in for a second opinion to local AAA shop. They informed me that Subaru issued a technical service bulletin for that year model Outback about the very problem I am having. After an online search of information about this problem I found several owners with the same problem and NO admission or assistance from Subaru. This is an expensive fix for a problem Subaru which Subaru is aware. This is a very dangerous problem because the vehicle will die on the road while in traffic that could cause high risk of an accident with injuries and possibly death. I have written to Subaru North America for assistance. So far no response. I believe this a possible recall because most of the complaints noted the problem occurs around 100K miles. And Subaru has done nothing to mitigate this problem.
Car started stalling when coming to a stop. No warning lights before or after. No check engine light or codes. Subaru dealership diagnosed it as torque converter without inspecting the car. Torque converter replaced by independent shop solved issue.
While driving the car on or about 12/21/2021 at about 6 or 7 pm at night, I experienced a catastrophic failure of the transmission. The car lost drivetrain power and began to shudder and limp along the road. All the warning lights on the dashboard lit up at once. Fortunately, I was not on a highway, and I was able to safely pull over to the side of the road. But the incident did leave me unsettled and distressed especially as it was happening. There were no warning signs or indications of something was amissed prior to the failure. At a Subaru dealership service, I learned with the valve body and the torque converter need to be replaced at an expensive cost (almost $4,000). This is a problem that Subaru is aware of and has done little to address it before the failure occurs in affected vehicles at large. I feel this is a serious safety issue that needs to be proactively remedied before failure can occur. My car only has 160,000 miles and responsibly driven. Normally, such a car should not have experienced such a catastrophic failure in the transmission as mine did even at that accrued mileage. I also later learned that this is a prevalent problem on this particular car model, so much so that many dealership service departments are performing this type of repair at least once a week. For this problem to be this relatively widespread means there some sort of defect or design flaw in the system itself. There seems to be a high rate of incidence for a critical part on a vehicle that should normally and typically last the lifetime of the vehicle.
When coming to a stop, the transmission's torque converter does not disengage, causing the engine to stall. This was diagnosed by two independent repair shops and there is an open TSB from Subaru that addresses this problem. However, when slowing down at an intersection, the sudden stop can be dangerous.
I have a 2011 Subaru Outback with ~`40k miles. After buying the vehicle in late 2020 I began to notice the vehicle shuttering and shaking when coming to a complete stop or when I begin to reverse and when the vehicle shutters there is a significant RPM drop. The shuttering issue occurs randomly and is concerning but the bigger issue is that the vehicle has also stalled after coming to a hard stop twice in the last year. When braking hard from 60 mph to avoid vehicle the vehicles engine stalled out. When this occurred I had to place the vehicle in park then restart the engine. As of today I have never seen a warning message or anything that would let me know that there was an issue. When researching the topic I found that this is a known issue by Subaru related to a faulty thrust washer in the CVT and a TSB, 16-90-13r was issued but was not directly communicated to the customer. The warranty was extended to 100k miles but the vehicle was purchased at 128k miles and I was told that the repair would not be covered since it fell outside the extended warranty. Thankfully when the car stalled there was not a vehicle behind me and I was visible on the road but this issue poses great risk to safety since one loses power to the vehicle. Also, the symptoms of the failure would leave the average driver to think it was a more common issue ( pad, caliper, tire balance) which would be misdiagnosed.

Torque Converter failure. When trying to stop, the car would stall out (not safe in busy intersections or when cars are behind you). No warning came up except momentarily when the stalling occurred. I have taken my car in to Subaru for all recommended servicing and repairs and directed based on mileage and service team recommendations. My vehicle was taken to my local Subaru service facility (Bruce Titus Subaru of Tacoma) for inspection after the stalling issue. Dealer confirmed the problem prior to repair (torque converter failure necessitating replacement). Torque converter failure is an all too common problem with the year and make of my car (2011 Subaru Outback) and Subaru of America put out an extended warranty coverage to rectify the complaints I presume. This was extended out to 10 yrs past the manufacture date or up to 100,000 miles. By car is ~ 7 months past the 10 year mark but still under 100,000 miles. Subaru of Americal is only willing to repay me $1000 back as a good will gesture (total pre tax was $2,321). This is a problem with so many of the Subaru's out there with CVTs. This was frightening to have happen and is beyond frustrating that people are having to pay out of pocket for issues that Subaru is well aware of but only willing to fix if a car has a failure in there extended warranty time frame. This SHOULD have been a recall for all cars due to safety!!!

I was driving at 65mph on highway in a like new 2011 Subaru Outback with 146,000 miles when the transmission valve body crapped out. This caused a severe shutter and loss of power like a missed gear, but thankfully I was able to coast off the highway without using the gas or without crashing. The drivetrain lost power unexpectedly again pulling into the parking lot off the highway. This action appears to be a major safety issue. I believe there is a manufacturing defect in one of the closed system parts that caused this perfectly maintained & repaired, vehicle in immaculate baby'd condition to fail. Vehicle is in perfect condition, and all maintenance in manual have been done as outlined by Subaru. My concern is the safety. Warning Lights were: Blinking Park Light Blinking AT Oil Temp Blinking Cruise Solid Check Engine Solid Traction Control The codes that were pulled were: P0700, P2764, C0057, C0054 Subaru of America has been notified of the issue.

When coming to a stop the motor almost dies. When I went to start going into a roundabout the engine stalled and chugged like I wasnt in the right gear. It is an automatic... No warning lights or anything.
Transmission was repaired with a new valve body at 119,000 miles. This was as a result of the TSB 16-90-13R released by subaru. The car now has 137K miles on it, and in researching the issue, the torque converter was not replaced when the work was done. Now the torque converter has fully failed and has damaged the transmission to where it needs replaced. The vehicle cannot be repaired under warranty despite the release;atively recent partial warranty repair. This car was stalling multiple times before it finally failed. We were quoted $6936 to replace transmission, but this is more than the car is worth.
This past week, I purchased a 2011 Subaru Outback for my daughter to have what I have always understood as a safe car. The car is nearly stalling on occasions when you come to a complete stop and at times when you are nearly stopped. The major incident is the engine shut off with me when I had to stopped quickly, nearly causing an accident when I had to put the car in neutral to start it back up. I was able to replicate it several times since then in places like empty parking lots....going as slow as 10 mph before putting on the brakes. No warning lights associated with this issue. I have not been to a dealer, but through research, I have seen that there is a faulty design in the transmission/torque converter (thrust bushing). I understand there is a TSB showing that Subaru would fix this problem, but only for vehicles under 100k miles (extended warranty). Our vehicle has 156k, but I don't see why mileage has to determine if a faulty design from the factory is replaced or not. It appears the original owner (I don't know them) either didn't have it fixed before 100k, it was fixed and has reoccured again, or the problem didn't manifest itself until after 100k and they decided to just sell/trade it. Nonetheless, this is not an acceptable problem for a car to have...especially for new drivers. I don't want to have to sell this car, because I really like Subaru's products, but I cannot have my children driving/riding in a car with this potential for causing a preventable accident. THE INSTALLED CVT TRANSMISSION HAS DEVELOPED A LEAK AT 115,000 MILES OR LESS. THE ONLY SOLUTION OFFERED BY SUBARU AS A MEANS TO REPAIR THE SEAL LEAK IS TO INSTALL AND ENTIRELY NEW TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $7,000. THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT BAD - THE SEAL IS. THERE WAS A WARRANTY EXTENSION SPECIFICALLY DUE TO THIS ISSUE WITH THIS CVT TRANSMISSION AND MODEL YEAR - AND WE ARE ONLY JUST OUT OF THE COVERED PERIOD. THE CVT WAS INCORRECTLY DESIGNED INITIALLY, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR INJURY OR ACCIDENT DUE TO NOT ADDRESSING THE ISSUE IS HIGH. SUBARU HAS NOT OFFERED ANY SOLUTION AT THIS POINT, AND HAS SUGGESTED THAT WE 'BUY ANOTHER MODEL'. THANKS FOR NOTHING. A POWERTRAIN ON A SUBARU SHOULD LAST - AND IS REPUTED TO LAST - UPWARDS OF 200,000 MILES. WE GOT A LEMON.
OUR 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK HAD A RADIATOR LEAK WITH NO WARNING SIGNAL. THE CAR OVERHEATED, THE RADIATOR CRACKED, AND WE BLEW THE HEADGASKET. ONLY AFTER THE DAMAGE WAS DONE DID A WARNING LIGHT COME ON. THE CAR ONLY HAS 100K MILES AND HAS BEEN CAREFULLY MAINTAINED.

SUBARU IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND HAS EVEN ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. THEY ALSO EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE CVT BECAUSE OF SO MANY COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE BUT HAVE NOT ISSUED A RECALL. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND STALLING IN TRAFFIC COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY AND DEATH. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS DEFECTIVE TORQUE CONVERTER.

THIS STARTED HAPPENING WITHIN LAST TWO MONTHS AND IS INCREASING IN FREQUENCY; CAR NOW HAS 121 000 MILES. IT IS A VERY UNNERVING EXPERIENCE AND RAISES SAFETY CONCERNS. I HAVE SCHEDULED A SERVICE CALL WITH LOCAL DEALERSHIP TOMORROW BUT NOTICED ON SUBARU'S SITE SIMILAR CONCERNS FROM OTHER DRIVERS.

WHEN DRIVING THE 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK AND COMING TO A STOP, THE VEHICLE WILL SHAKE AND/OR SHUDDER AND WILL OFTENTIMES STALL OUT. THE DEALER CLAIMS THAT WE NEED TO REMOVE THE ENGINE AND REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THIS SEEMS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE ON THE 2011 OUTBACK AND THERE HAS BEEN A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS. THIS IS NOT SAFE AS THIS CAN HAPPEN ON HILLS OR IN WINTER ON SNOWY/ICY ROADS SO SHOULD BE ELEVATED TO A RECALL. THE CAR MEETS THE 10 YEAR TIME-FRAME OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE EXTENSION BECAUSE OF THE MILES WHICH WERE 132,000. I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR PUT MAYBE $1000 MILES ON IT BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION STARTED GIVING US PROBLEMS. THERE IS A DOCUMENTED ISSUE WITH THE SUBARU 2011 CVT THAT REQUIRES A RECALL, NOT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. LOOK ALL OF THE INTERNET ON CUSTOMERS HAVING THEIR CVT TRANSMISSION FAIL AT JUST OVER 100,000 MILES AND BEING STUCK WITH $7000 REPAIR BILLS.

SUBARU OF AMERICA'S CORPORATE CALL CENTER AND TWO SEPARATE DEALERSHIPS (PRIME SUBARU MANCHESTER NH, CLAY SUBARU NORWOOD MA) PROVIDED WRONG INFORMATION ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS THAT CONFLICTED WITH THEIR TSB 11-104-11. THEY AFFIRMATIVELY SAID THAT THERE WAS NEVER AN UPDATE FOR THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE AVAILABLE FOR THE VEHICLE AFTER IT LEFT THE FACTORY. THIS IS COMPLETELY INCORRECT AND THUS I SPENT 2 YEARS TROUBLESHOOTING A KNOWN ISSUE, HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON DIAGNOSTIC FEES, AND I EVEN REPLACED THE TORQUE CONVERTER AS IT WAS AFFLICTED WITH THE SQUEAL DESCRIBED IN TSB 16-101-16R AND WE COULDN'T RULE OUT THAT ISSUE. THE SYMPTOM IS AN ERRATIC SHIFTING PATTERN, ESPECIALLY WHEN SLOWING DOWN FOR A RED LIGHT THEN SPEEDING UP WHEN IT TURNS GREEN. I DID MY OWN RESEARCH TO DISCOVER THIS TSB VIA ONLINE POSTS AND DOWNLOAD IT FROM THE NHTSA WEBSITE. KRISTEN WEAVER WAS THE ASSOCIATE I SPOKE TO AT SUBARU OF AMERICA ON 5/29/2020. SHE DENIED THAT THE TSB APPLIES TO MY CAR EVEN THOUGH IT CLEARLY SAYS ON THE TSB THAT ALL MY11 OUTBACK 3.6R ARE EFFECTED. PRIME SUBARU IN MANCHESTER NH PERFORMED THE TORQUE CONVERTER REPLACEMENT AND SHOULD HAVE UPDATED THE TCM AT THE TIME, BUT THEY SAID THERE WAS NO UPDATE AVAILABLE. CLAY SUBARU IN NORWOOD MA ALSO SAID AFFIRMATIVELY THAT THERE WAS NEVER A TCM UPDATE AVAILABLE. MILFORD SUBARU IN MILFORD NH FINALLY APPLIED THE UPDATE AT MY SPECIFIC REQUEST AND CONFIRMED THAT PRIME SUBARU SHOULD HAVE DONE SO WHEN THEY DID THE TORQUE CONVERTER UPDATE, AND THAT THEY DID NOT.

I HAVE BEEN REPORTING PROBLEMS WITH MY TRANSMISSION SINCE 2012 TO MY REGULAR DEALERSHIP, STAR SUBARU WHEN THE CAR HAD JUST 23,472 MILES ON IT. AT THIS POINT, I BELIEVE THAT I HAVE BEEN WRONGFULLY DENIED WARRANTY COVERAGE. THEN AGAIN, IN 2017, WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, I BROUGHT MY OUTBACK TO STAR SUBARU COMPLAINING THAT WHILE DRIVING SLOW, THE CAR TENDS TO 'JUMP' MID-DRIVE, ALMOST LIKE SOMEONE REAR ENDED YOU. THE CAR AT THIS POINT WAS AT ABOUT 94,467 MILES, UNDER THE 100,000 MILE WARRANTY LIMIT. AFTER NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS I FINALLY RECEIVED A TEST DRIVE WITH A SUBARU MECHANIC AT STAR SUBARU IN BAYSIDE, QUEENS, NY. HE CONCLUDED THAT IT NEEDED TRANSMISSION PARTS, A TORQUE CONVERTER/VALVE BODY. AT THAT POINT I WAS SET TO HAVE IT REPLACED ONCE THE PARTS CAME IN. WEEKS WENT BY AND I HEARD NOTHING. I CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA WHO WAS ABLE TO SET ME UP WITH EAST HILLS SUBARU. THE SOA PERSON WAS VERY HELPFUL WITH THE TRANSITION. THEY PERFORMED THEIR OWN DIAGNOSTIC, AND THE CONDITION AT THE TIME WOULD NOT REPLICATE. UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN THIS 'JUMP/SLAM' HAPPENS, IT DOES SPONTANEOUSLY. WE CANNOT MAKE IT HAPPEN, NOR DO WE EVEN KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. IT WAS ALWAYS VERY SPORADIC. SOMETIMES IT WOULD HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 65, OR SOMETIMES LESS THAN 5MPH. ON A LONG TRIP BACK FROM VERMONT, THERE WOULD BE A LARGE REVVING SOUND, AND THEN IT FELT AS IF SOMEONE HIT US FROM BEHIND. ONCE AGAIN, I TOOK THE CAR TO SUBARU, ONLY TO BE TOLD THEY SIMPLY COULDN'T 'REPLICATE THE PROBLEM', AND THEREFORE WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP US. ON APRIL 3RD 2019, I BRING MY CAR IN AGAIN TO EAST HILL SUBARU. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THEY DO RECALL. THEY ALSO TROUBLESHOOT THE CHECK ENGINE CODE, WHICH NOW COMES UP CLEARLY AS P1710 TORQUE CONVERTER TURBINE 2 SPEED SIGNAL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION. NOW IT'S NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.THE PRICE TAG IS VERY HIGH, ALMOST $6,000! *TR

AFTER GOOGLING THIS ISSUE, I FOUND OUT THAT IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM THAT SUBARU HAS ADMITTED TO IT AND OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY (UP TO 100,000 MILES) ON SOME 1.5 MILLION OF THEIR CARS. WELL, MY CAR WAS JUST OVER THE 100K MILE MARK SO I WAS TOLD I WAS OUT OF LUCK. OF COURSE THIS IS A $4,000+ REPAIR DONE AT THE DEALER. AND IF THE TORQUE CONVERTER CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE CVT TRANSMISSION THEN YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE ENTIRE CVT REPLACED AT A COST OF $8,000! THE DRAIN THE TRANSMISSION TO SEE IF ANY METAL FLAKES ARE IN THE FLUID. IF THERE ARE THEN YOU'LL NEED TO GET A NEW CVT TRANSMISSION. ACCORDING TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THEIR VEHICLES REPAIRED IT IS THE TORQUE CONVERTER. SUBARU ISSUED AN EXTENSION TO THE VEHICLE WARRANTY TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIR UP TO 100,000 MILES WHICH DOES ME NO GOOD BECAUSE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, I WAS WELL OVER THE 100,000 MILES. COST OF THE REPAIRS ON AVERAGE IS $2200.00. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT IF THERE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH A VEHICLE WHERE DRIVER/OCCUPANT SAFETY IS AT RISK, THE CAR MANUFACTURER HAS TO RECALL THE PRODUCT. AFTER THEY INSPECTED IT THEY ASKED ME IF THIS WAS MY FIRST CVT AND I SAID YES, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE CAR NEEDED TO LEARN MY DRIVING HABITS SO THEY DID A 'RE-LEARN' ON THE CVT WHICH I HAD TO PAY FOR OUT OF POCKET. AT THIS TIME I HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY OR THE CVT TRANSMISSION THE SUBARU RELEASED IN 2014. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISCLOSED WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FILED TO NHTSA AND SUBARU OF AMERICA ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I RECENTLY PURCHASED MY OUTBACK USED (SECOND OWNER) AT 145,000 MILES IN LATE MAY 2019. EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED 8 MONTHS PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECK FOR ANY OUTSTANDING RECALLS UPON MY PURCHASE. CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA WHO ADVISED IT WOULD NEED TO GO TO A "AUTHORIZED SUBARU DEALER" FOR DIAGNOSIS BEFORE THEY COULD HELP US. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT SUBARU EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THESE VEHICLES FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM TO 10 YEARS, 100,000 MILES. THE PERSON I SPOKE TO AT SUBARU, MARTINA BROWN INDICATED THAT ONCE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO REVIEW THE CLAIM AND HELP US OUT, SO WE DROVE THE CAR TO OUR LOCAL SUBARU DEALER. CAR WAS DRIVING FINE WHEN IT WAS DROPPED THERE. AFTER DIAGNOSIS, IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, BUT THEY REFUSED TO DO IT AT NO COST. IN FACT, THEY OFFERED US 1K TOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A NEW SUBARU. WHAT A JOKE, I CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE THEY WOULD HAVE THE AUDACITY TO MAKE AN OFFER LIKE THAT. WE'D ALREADY BEEN OFFERED WAY MORE THAN THAT AS A TRADE FOR A NEW VEHICLE ELSEWHERE, BUT DIDN'T TAKE THE OFFER BECAUSE WE WERE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT SUBARU WOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND FIX IT. THE CAR IS UNDER THE 10 YEARS, BUT OVER THE 100,000 MILES. I FEEL THAT SUBARU SHOULD FIX IT AT NO COST SINCE THEY KNEW THIS WAS AN ISSUE. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE AS IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO PAY FOR THESE REPAIRS. I'VE CONTACTED SUBARU AS THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 100K MILES HOWEVER, MY CAR HAS JUST SLIGHTLY MORE THAN THAT. IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND CREATES ANXIETY TO DRIVE IN TRAFFIC NOT KNOWING IF YOUR CAR WILL SIMPLY STALL OUT AND HAVE SOMEONE HIT YOU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AND COMING TO A STOP, EXCESSIVE FORCE HAD TO BE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, IN ORDER TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE INTERMITTENTLY OCCURRED. THE CRUISE CONTROL, OVERHEAT, BRAKE AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN AT A STOP SIGN IF THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS NOT STEADILY BEING DEPRESSED THE BRAKE WOULD DISENGAGE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ELECTRONIC EMERGENCY BRAKE FAILED TO OPERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND VALVE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED CONTINENTAL SUBARU DEALER (907) 562-2722, 4900 OLD SEWARD HWY, ANCHORAGE, AK 99503) WHERE IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. BULLETIN NUMBER 16-90-13R. SUBARU IS AWARE THAT 2010-2012 OUTBACK AND LEGACY MODELS HAVE A FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO SHUT DOWN/STALL WHENEVER YOU ARE BRAKING. I FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY WHEN BRAKING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND THE CAR SHUT OFF WHILE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. I WAS BRAKING AND THE CAR SHUTTERED AND THEN TURNED OFF COMPLETELY. I ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED. I ALSO FOUND THROUGH RESEARCH THAT IT COULD RUIN MY CVT TRANSMISSION. I HAVE AN OFFER FROM SUBARU OF AMERICA FOR A $2000 CREDIT TO TRADE IN MY CAR ON A NEW SUBARU. THE DEALERSHIP THAT PERFORMED THE WARRANTY WORK ALSO OFFERED ME %50 COVERAGE SINCE IT WAS CLOSE TO THE 12 MONTH WARRANTY THEY OFFER ON WORK. I DO NOT WANT A NEW CAR, I WANT MY CAR TO BE ABLE TO LAST. 18,000 MILES ON A TRANSMISSION IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH AND A CONSUMER SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXPECT AT LEAST 75,000 MILES OR 3 YEARS. THESE CVTS ARE FLAWED, AND SUBARU CUSTOMERS NEED TO BE TREATED BETTER THAN THIS, AT LEAST FROM CORPORATE. SUBARU DESERVES TO RECALL THIS PART AND TAKE CARE OF THE ISSUE. AT THE VERY LEAST THE CONSECUTIVE TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD BE WARRANTIED AS A NEW PART AND NOT CONSIDERED PART OF THE CURRENT VEHICLE POWER TRAIN MILEAGE WARRANTY. I'VE BEEN A LOYAL SUBARU OWNER FOR 12 YEARS, DRIVING 3 DIFFERENT CARS. UNFORTUNATELY, SINCE IT HAPPENED 11 DAYS AFTER THEIR WARRANTY EXPIRED THEY WON'T FIX IT UNLESS WE PAY $4000+ OR TRADE IT IN FOR A BRAND NEW CAR WHICH WE CAN'T AFFORD. IF THEY KNEW THIS WAS AN ISSUE TO PROVIDE A WARRANTY ON IT THEN THEY SHOULD REPAIR IT FOR FREE AS THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AS-IS. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL.

MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING FROM MARYLAND TO NEW YORK CITY LATE AT NIGHT. ALL OF A SUDDEN, WE HEARD A GRINDING NOISE AND WITHIN 30 MINUTES OUR CAR COMPLETELY BROKE DOWN. NO WARNING LIGHTS EVER CAME ON IN THE CAR INDICATING THERE WAS A SERIOUS ISSUE. WE HAD JUST GOTTEN OFF THE VERRAZANO BRIDGE. HAD THE CAR STOPPED ON THE BRIDGE, WE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED, IF NOT KILLED. WE CAME TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS A FULL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE SUBARU DEALER IN NEW YORK INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO TRANSMISSION FLUID LEFT IN THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL, BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY SIGNS OF A LEAK. THE VALVE BODY WAS REPAIRED IN SEPTEMBER 2017 AND AT THAT TIME IT WAS COVERED UNDER SUBARU'S EXTENDED CVT WARRANTY. AT THE TIME OF THAT REPAIR WORK, THE SUBARU SERVICE CENTER WHO DID THE WORK CONFIRMED THAT THEY HAD ADDED SOME TRANSMISSION FLUID TO THE CAR. WE CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA TO SEE IF THEY WOULD HELP US WITH THE COST OF A NEW TRANSMISSION, SINCE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAD ONLY JUST EXPIRED ON JULY 31, 2018 (OUR CAR BROKE DOWN ON AUGUST 28) AND BECAUSE WE HAD ALREADY HAD TRANSMISSION WORK DONE LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. SUBARU OF AMERICAN VERY RUDELY INFORMED US THAT THEY HAVE "ZERO FINANCIAL OBLIGATION TO US" AND WOULD NOT BE HELPING US WITH THE COST OF REPAIRS ($7000 TO REPAIR). WE ARE BESIDE OURSELVES WITH HOW THIS HAPPENED TO OUR CAR. HOW CAN WE HAVE A FULL TRANSMISSION FAILURE LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER TRANSMISSION WORK WAS DONE ON THE CAR AND HAVE NO WARNING LIGHTS COME ON IN THE CAR INDICATING THERE WAS AN ISSUE? HOW DID ALL OF THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK OUT OF OUR CAR WITHOUT US KNOWING, AND HOW IS IT THAT SUBARU IS UNABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE LEAK? NOW 3 WEEKS AFTER THE "EXTENDED WARRANTY" PERIOD HAS EXPIRED THE TRANSMISSION APPEARS TO HAVE FAILED. WAS CHARGED OVER $200 FOR THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO RESET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. CURRENTLY WAITING TO SEE IF SUBARU CORPORATE WILL STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT; IN ANY EVENT THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE WIDESPREAD AND POSSES A HAZARD TO MOTORISTS SINCE THE AFFECTED VEHICLES CAN STOP, STALL, OR LOOSE POWER WHILE ON THE ROAD WITH LITTLE TO NO WARNING.

I'VE TAKEN IT TO AUTHORIZED SUBARU DEALERSHIPS AND THE ORIGINAL ONE I PURCHASED FROM TO NO PREVAIL. TODAY I WRITE WITH THE ISSUE OF MY CVT. THE FACT THAT I RECEIVED A ONE YEAR OR 100,000 MILES FROM DATE OF YEAR MADE IS OR WHICH EVER COMES FIRST IS COMPLETE CRAP. BUT I'M GETTING THE RUNAROUND FROM DIFFERENT SUBARU DEALERS AND SUBARU OF AMERICAS HOTLINE ON HOW THIS IS ADDRESSED SINCE I HAVE OVER 100K MILES AND WHETHER OR NOT THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS COVERED IN THIS WARRANTY. I HAD CAR MAINTAINED PROPERLY AT ALL RECOMMENDED SERVICE INTERVALS. THESE PROBLEMS STARTED AFTER 100K AND OCCURRED WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. ESSENTIALLY, THE AUTOMOBILE WENT FROM FULLY FUNCTIONAL TO THIS SITUATION (SUDDEN STALLING DURING OPERATION) WITHIN A WEEK. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET, I FOUND A SUBARU SERVICE BULLETIN #16-90-13 DESIGN CHANGE TO LOCK-UP TYPE TORQUE CONVERTER LINKED TO A DESCRIPTION OF AN ISSUE LIKE THIS. WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE I MENTIONED THE SERVICE BULLETIN TO THE SERVICE COORDINATOR AND HE KNEW ALL ABOUT IT. THEY TESTED THE CAR AND THIS WAS CONFIRMED TO BE THE PROBLEM. MY CAR HOWEVER IS OUT OF WARRANTY. IT IS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD - NOT EVEN PAID OFF YET- BUT HAS >60,000 MILES. THE REPAIR IS NOT COVERED AND WILL BE CLOSE TO $1800.00. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE A RECALL. AFTER BRAKING MODERATE TO HARD WHEN THE VEHICLE COMES TO A STOP THE CAR STALLS WITHOUT FAIL. A FEW WEEKS LATER ON MARCH 10, 2015 WE BROUGHT THE CAR BACK AFTER IT OCCURRED SEVERAL MORE TIMES. THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T EVEN NEED TO DO A ROAD TEST, THEY KNEW THE PROBLEM WAS A FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER. WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE THIS IS A COMMON DEFECT FOR THIS MODEL. THEY ALSO SAID THE TRANSMISSION (CVT) MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS SAME PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED TO OTHERS WE KNOW WHO HAVE THE SAME CAR. OUR OUTBACK HAS 74K MILES ON IT NOW. THE WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 70K MILES. WE STILL OWE PAYMENTS ON THE CAR AND NOW WILL NEED TO SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX IT. I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT AN ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR IN MY CAR ON JANUARY 13, 2014 AS THIS IS A SAFETY MATTER. THE ROAD CONDITION WAS DRY AND THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 40 DEGREES. FIRST I BACKED OUT OF MY GARAGE ONTO THE ROAD, THEN SHIFTED TO THE D POSITION AND DROVE ABOUT HALF A MILE FORWARD. I NOTICED THAT THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN AS USUAL WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS I WAS APPROACHING THE FIRST INTERSECTION. I HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL MUCH FURTHER THAN USUAL. I DID NOT SLOW DOWN TO A COMPLETE STOP, MADE A RIGHT TURN AND CONTINUED TO DRIVE. I DECIDED TO PAY CLOSER ATTENTION TO THE BEHAVIOR OF THE CAR DURING THE NEXT BRAKING PERIOD. I DROVE ANOTHER QUARTER MILE AND I HAD TO APPLY THE BRAKES AGAIN AS I WAS APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN AS USUAL AGAIN, SO I HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR TO MAKE A COMPLETE STOP. WHEN THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED MOVING I HEARD A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE AND THE TACHOMETER ARROW WAS MOVING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN 2000 AND 5000 RPM. IT SEEMED AS THOUGH THE CLUTCH WAS STILL ENGAGED EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AND THE CAR WAS NOT MOVING. THIS CONTINUED FOR 5-10 SECONDS UNTIL I SHIFTED INTO THE N POSITION AS I CONTINUED TO HOLD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE SQUEAKING SOUND DISAPPEARED AND THE TACHOMETER ARROW WENT DOWN IMMEDIATELY. I SHIFTED BACK INTO THE D POSITION AGAIN WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR BEHAVED NORMALLY. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT APPEARED SINCE THAT TIME. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO A SUBARU SERVICE DEALER AT NORWOOD, MA 02062 ON JAN. 27, 2014, BUT THEY DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG (CUSTOMER #[XXX], INVOICE [XXX], MILES 31340). THE ISSUE STARTED AT AROUND 25,000 MILES. MY 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK, UPON SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE OR FROM PARK TO DRIVE FROM A COLD START, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD PAUSE FOR A SECOND OR TWO THEN WOULD EXHIBIT A LOUD BANG/CLUNK AND THE CAR WOULD LURCH FORWARD. WARMING THE CAR FOR SEVERAL MINUTES (~5-10 MINUTES) DID NOT SOLVE THE ISSUE. I READ OTHERS WHO HAD THE SAME ISSUE SO AT 28,622 MILES (~1.5 MONTHS FROM THE FIRST INCIDENT) I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE SUBARU SERVICE/DEALER. UNFORTUNATELY THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE ISSUE, LIKELY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY DID A TRANSMISSION RELEARN BEFORE TRYING TO TEST THE TRANSMISSION. THE CAR WAS FINE FOR ABOUT 2 DAYS AFTER RECEIPT FROM SERVICE, BUT THEN THE BANG/CLUNK/LURCH BEGAN AGAIN, ON AND OFF, UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS MENTIONED EARLIER (I.E., COLD START, SHIFTING INTO DRIVE, ETC.) UNTIL ITS FAILURE ON APRIL 22 (MILEAGE ~33,400, ~3 MONTHS AFTER BRINGING THE CAR TO THE SUBARU SERVICE/DEALER NOTED ABOVE). THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING 45 MPH, AFTER I HEARD A BANG FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL CONTROLLABLE, BUT ONLY FIRST GEAR WORKED. THE CAR TODAY (APRIL 23) IS AT THE SERVICE STATION TO DETERMINE IF IT IS A TRANSMISSION ISSUE OR A COMPUTER ISSUE. *TR

THE CONSUMER THEN NOTICED THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN DRIVE. THE CONSUMER STATED ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL, THE KEY WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO COME OUT OF THE IGNITION, UNLESS THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN PARK AND THE ENGINE WAS OFF. THE CONSUMER STATED ON AUGUST 6, 2011, WHEN HE RETURNED TO HIS VEHICLE, HE ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED SUBARU. THE SUBARU EMPLOYEE STATED THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM THE KEY OR THE SECURITY SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE BATTERY HAD BEEN REPLACED AND THE VEHICLE WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. ABOUT TWO MONTHS LATER, THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A SIMILAR PROBLEM, BUT AFTER THREE ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE STARTED. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT GO OUT, UNLESS THE KEY WAS REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION.

I DO NOT KNOW IF I AM NOT SETTING THE BRAKE BEFORE EXITING OR AM NOT DEPRESSING IT FULLY BEFORE EXITING OR WHY IT DID NOT STOP WHEN I HIT IT REPEATEDLY. I CARRY A WEEDOUT, OTHER PEOPLE I HAVE TALKED TO CARRY ICE PICKS AND TROWELS FOR GETTING THE SNOW OUT. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME SINCE DEC 2010, WHENEVER DRIVING IN WET SNOW. I HEARD IT DISCUSSED ON CAR TALK, SO I KNOW IT IS A COMMON COMPLAINT. 2) MANUAL TRANSMISSION LINKAGE IS NOW EXPOSED ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE 2011. THE CAR GETS STUCK IN ONE GEAR AND WILL NOT SHIFT. HAPPENED IN 2ND AND 4TH. I GOT IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REMOVED STICKS AND GRAVEL FROM THE LINKAGE. THEY SAID THEY HAD MANY 2011 MANUAL TRANSMISSION SUBIES IN THAT WEEK WITH STICKS AND GRAVEL IN THE LINKAGE DUE TO THE BAD WEATHER. I COULD NOT GO UP HILLS OR START FROM A STOP WHEN IT WAS STUCK IN 4TH. I COULD NOT DRIVE OVER 20MPH WHEN STUCK IN 2ND. I COULD NOT REVERSE EITHER WAY. THIS IS NOT SAFE, ESPECIALLY WHEN DRIVING IN SNOW AND TRAFFIC IN THE MOUNTAINS. I ASKED THE DEALER IF THEY COULD PUT ON SOMETHING TO COVER AND PROTECT THE LINKAGE AND THEY SAID NO, EVER SINCE SUBARU WENT TO 6 FORWARD GEARS THE LINKAGE IS EXPOSED AND THEY CANNOT ADD ANYTHING TO COVER IT. I THINK THE 6 FORWARD GEAR MANUAL TRANSMISSION OUTBACKS SHOULD BE RECALLED, AND THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO 5 GEARS FORWARD AND PROPERLY COVER UP THE LINKAGE. *TR

MY CAR HAS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, SO I ENGAGED THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE TO HOLD THE CAR SO I COULD GET MOVING AGAIN WITHOUT ROLLING BACKWARDS. HOWEVER, THE PARKING BRAKE ON MY CAR AUTOMATICALLY DISENGAGES AS SOON AS THE GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED (OR EVEN, ACTUALLY, TOUCHED AT ALL). BECAUSE OF THE VERY STEEP INCLINE, BY THE TIME I HAD ENOUGH REVS TO ENGAGE THE CLUTCH, MY CAR HAD ROLLED BACK INTO THE STREET BEHIND ME. FORTUNATELY NO VEHICLE WAS PASSING AT THE TIME, THOUGH A SERIOUS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE NEEDS TO BE MANUALLY DISENGAGED IF THE DRIVER SEATBELT IS UNFASTENED, PRESUMABLY AS A REMINDER TO FASTEN THE SEATBELT. IN THE FUTURE IN A SIMILAR DRIVING SITUATION I WOULD BE TEMPTED TO UNFASTEN MY SEATBELT BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE STEEP HILL START, WHICH WOULD BE THE LESS DANGEROUS OF TWO DANGEROUS OPTIONS. I EMAILED SUBARU TO POINT OUT THE PROBLEM AND ASK WHETHER IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO MODIFY THESE VEHICLES SUCH THAT THE PARKING BRAKE IS ALWAYS CONTROLLABLE BY THE DRIVER. MY CONCERN WAS DISMISSED, SEEMINGLY WITHOUT MUCH CONSIDERATION. WHEN COMING TO A ROLLING STOP AND THEN STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR AS OUR 2011 OUTBACK WAS TURNING, THE NEW VEHICLE, WITH 9 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, EXPERIENCED A BRIEF HESITATION FOLLOWED BY A HARD TRANSMISSION CLUNK AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD A FEW FEET BEFORE DRIVING NORMALLY. THIS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES DURING ROLLING STOPS BOTH WHEN GOING FORWARD AND WHEN TURNING A CORNER. WE FEEL THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITHIN 17 HOURS OF PURCHASE AND, AFTER THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 10 DAYS, WE WERE INFORMED THAT, WHILE THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM, THERE IS NO CURRENT FIX FOR THE ISSUE AND HAVE NO ESTIMATE AS TO WHEN THERE MIGHT BE ONE. IN RESEARCHING ONLINE, WE DISCOVERED THAT A VERY SIMILAR, IF NOT IDENTICAL, PROBLEM WAS REPORTED BY OWNERS OF THE 2010 OUTBACK MODEL AND A SUBARU SERVICE BULLETIN (11-94-09R) DATED 01/05/10 WAS ISSUED ANNOUNCING THAT 'ECM' REPROGRAMMING FILES' WERE AVAILABLE TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM. *TR
