Nov 2, 2025 Fire

A fire started under the hood of my car while I was driving. There were no warning lights on in my car and the temperature gauge was in the middle where it usually is. Earlier in the day, I smelled gas, but I thought it was a different car as the smell of gas went away after a car that had a lot of exhaust coming out was no longer in sight.

Car stalled in traffic. The engine was cranking but it would not start. Had AAA tow off the road and to my home. Car sat for 10 days waiting for a fuel pump (thought this was the problem). After sitting for 10 days the battery was totally dead! New fuel pump installed battery was jumped but could not start the car. After 2 hours on the charger the battery still did not have enough energy to turn over the engine. Car is in a certified service shop (Wilhelm). Battery replaced and same starting issues with the new battery and the new battery is discharging at a very high rate even though the car is not starting. Bought the car used in 2023 so I have no knowledge of the history of the car. Service provider running factory diagnostic testing but so far no determination as to cause of the high rate of discharge. Verified that the fuel pump is fully operational. What we know is that with a fresh fully charged battery and a working fuel pump the car will not start and remain running. The engine stops and the battery drain is excessive.

Hi: When I was driving yesterday, the engine warning light and brake warning light both turned on. The car was like frozen on the road cannot be moved no matter how to press the gas pedal. The police helped to call tow and move my car out of the road. The tow driver left my car at a flat parking lot. On the lot, when I tried to restart my car, the car started to shake side to side and up and down. I can feel some part is dislocated and one piece of heavy thing was swaying in the car. The engine warning light was on for two times during the last two years. First time when I sent the car to the dealership, they performed the check and fixed it by free. The customer service person told me the problem is the sensor failing and the fixing was free. So, I guess it is the system defect and the manufacture already knew it. So the repairing was free. However, with one year, the situation happened again. The second time I sent the car for fixing, the service person told me it was the same problem of sensor failing but they charged me around two hundreds dollar for the second time fixing. Yesterday, the same situation happened again with the brake warning light on at the same time. It is almost another one year after the second time I sent car for repairing. My most concern is the car completely suddenly stopped during the driving. If I was on the highway, serious collision may happen and I am already passed away.

Dec 15, 2023 Crash

On 12/6/2023, as I slowly turned right into a parking space, my car suddenly surged forward and accelerated without my input to the gas pedal. The brakes did not work, and there was no resistance from the brake pedal when I repeated to push it. The car continued to accelerate for about 80 ft as I focused on steering to avoid hitting other cars parked in the lot. The car ran over a curb, up a grassy area, and crashed into a row of trees. The airbag did not deploy. I sustained neck muscle strain/whiplash, and bruises to my chest and right knee. My safety was at risk, as well as anyone or anything that was in the car's path since I had no control over the acceleration or the brakes. The car is a 2020 Subaru Outback with about 44000 miles. It is in a body shop and they have not yet determined if it is safe to work on. So far, they have observed the engine race when the car was turned on. There were no warning signs prior to the acceleration. When I called the Subaru dealer service department, I was told that they never heard of this before and it had to have been my fault. They said I could bring it in after the body damage is repaired, and that I can pay for a diagnotic report. However, they expect that the report will not show anything.

A well-known failure of the Thermal Control Valve (TCV) occurred, which disabled many or most of the safety features on the car in addition to crippling the heat output in the cabin. Additionally, depending on which way the valve sticks, it could overheat the car and ruin the engine, or worse. Car is under 4 years old and repair estimate is nearly $1900. There is a technical safety bulletin [XXX] that outlines a redesigned TCV. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Dec 14, 2023

Thermo Control Valve assembly has failed resulting in loss of use for the following: Rear Automatic Brake, Eye Sight lane keeping, loss of heat in cabin and failure of coolant to circulate within engine possibly leading to engine failure, loss of cruise control and check engine light coming on. Reference TSB [XXX] . Without cabin heat vehicle is not useable in current cold temperatures (Currently 22 degrees Fahrenheit in Ohio on December 14, 2023). Dealer has confirmed part failure. Issue must be addressed to continue operating vehicle so I paid $1185.87 out of pocket to repair. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The factory 2020 Subaru Outback Wagon is built with a Thermo Control Valve that is, essentially, made out of a composite plastic. As this part is part of the engine cooling system, it is placed under both heat and pressure. While it controls the anti-freeze to the heater core in the passenger compartment, it is also attached under cover to metal fittings. While the car now has about 90,000 miles, this control valve cracked and began to leak anti-freeze on top of the engine. Without cooling, the engine would likely be ruined. Thus, the car required immediate service. When a fault like this occurs, by the way, the Subaru Eyesight System shuts down taking with it various safety features. I had the defective part replaced and it's replacement is not made of composite plastic but, rather and more appropriately, metal. It is my belief that the selection of the orignal part was a design defect ignoring the potential for differential expansion of the parts when exposed to such temperatures. Failure was inevitable. It is worth noting this is not an inexpensive repair as numerous parts have to be removed to access this valve. Likewise, the service representative made note that numerous other customers have had to have the same service.

Sep 17, 2023 Crash

I was driving and car accelerated without warning. Hit partially open garage door, only stopped after hitting and damaging back wall of garage. Significant damage to car, items in the garage and garage wall. There was no warning whatsoever. As of yet the car has not been assessed as to the cause of the malfunction.

While we were at a speed of about 55 mph on a state highway, I had just selected cruise control when all the lights went on in the dash--including the warning lights for the brake, the check engine light--and power shut down in the vehicle as if we'd run out of gas. We were able to keep a very slow speed of about 20-25mph, but had to activate the 4-way flashers to alert other drivers that we were losing speed. We managed to get over to the shoulder and call for a tow. We feel this was a catastrophic failure of the vehicle, which endangered both of us. At least we still had power steering. At the dealer, the techs advised us that the issue was likely due to a failure of the electronic thermostat control. The car was in the shop for a week, and was repaired at no cost to us. The thermo control valve and all related parts were replaced. If not under warranty, this would have cost over $2K. We had no warning that this component was failing.

At one year and 7,358 an engine oil leak had to be repaired, and still seepage and monitor is recommended. Then at three years and 28,175 the coolant bypass valve failed and was repaired. Both problems were covered by warrently, but as I live 60 miles from the dealer it was a hassle. I bought the car new in March 2020. I can not recommend Sabaru to people who ask about it and it is highly unlikely I would purchase another Subaru. However it is comfortable and practical and do not plan to sell or trade it for another car at this time. Now at four months after the latest repair it appears to be doing well, and I monitor the oil level.

While driving on the NYS Thruway (I90), I started to pass a Tractor Trailer, I put my blinker on and began moving to the right to pass. There were 2/3 cars in back of me also passing. I was using cruise control and I began to put my foot on the accelerator to finish my passing and move over to the right hand lane to let the other vehicles pass me. However, upon accelerating, my car started to drop power, multiple lights displaying simultaneously indicating a potential problem. (Eyesight Assist, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Brake & Engine Lights), the vehicle started jerking back and forth and I lost all but maybe 5 miles of power. My choice at that time was put my blinker on and try and move to the right - letting the Tractor Trailer pass me on the right and HOPE there was not another vehicle behind so I could move over safely at that crawling speed or go to the left into the gully. This could have been a multiple car collision and maybe fatalities due to the speed and loss of control of my vehicle. After towing to the nearest dealer, they determined it was the Thermo Control Valve. I see now that there is a "service bulletin" and design change of this component and that other Subaru drivers have been affected the same way. This is a very serious situation. I ask, why no recall from Subaru. I have been without my vehicle now for 4 days and may not have it back until next week. I am very fearful of driving that vehicle again.

I just purchased a Outback XT with the 2.4l turbo engine. After more researching with owning the car I discovered these cars with this engine can have a oil pan leak due to the bad RTV sealant applied to the lower oil pan from the factory. I went outside to go look under my car to see if this issue is occurring to mine. To discovery my car has a small oil leak from the rear of the oil pan. it has 31k miles. Further research shows the WRX whom has the same engine also has an issue with RTV falling apart within the oil pan and having the oil pick up tube sucking up the gasket in small pieces. These pieces are then and can get stuck at the top of the tube where a small screen is and can STARVE the engine from oil! MULTIPLE pictures of various shops have shown this LITERALLY. This is a big issue and is common for these engines to have this from the factory many YouTube, forums, blogs are saying this! Search " '22 WRX RTV oil pan pick up tube issue" , "Subaru 2.4l Turbo oil pan leak" , "Subaru 2.4l Oil peak up with RTV" This MUST BE CORRECTED it can cause SEVERE engine failure. THIS NEEDS to be RECALLED IMEDIATELY!

Feb 25, 2023

When we started vehicle, a wide array of systems shut down including cruise, Eye Sight, lane detection, auto high bean, adaptive light cornering - essentially anything “automated” or assisted - along with the heating. The car ran at a higher RPM at idle - 2000 vs a usual 700-800 - and rough shifted at speed. Again, as if the automatic transmission lost its sync. The water temp gauge was also off. Have since learned this was the “thermo control valve” and somewhat of a known fault on Outbacks of this year. We were lucky to reach home from the long trip we were on and to the dealership. At the dealership, the service team did not admit this was wide spread. Nor did they tell us there is an updated part from Subaru available. They intend to install the OEM part, which concerns us that in another 40-50k we will face the same $2k problem. We are unlucky that we just went over 60k miles, so this will not be covered under Subaru’s 60k drivetrain warranty. That Subaru is covering a cooling system problem under the guise of being drive train tells me they know they have something to keep quiet.

Check engine light came on with error code p26a5 which seems to be known issue with the Thermo Control Valve.

Jan 27, 2023 Crash

I pulled into my driveway, came to a stop and planned to back up a short distance to be nearer the front walkway. Before I could shift into reverse the car started to accelerate forward. I slammed my foot onto the brakes which had no effect on the acceleration. The car stopped when the lower bumper hit and ran up onto a large boulder on the edge of the driveway. The car was partially wedged on the top of the boulder but I was able to back it off the boulder, park and turn off the car. I have scheduled an appointment with the service department on February 1st, at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle in June 2020. Of note, I had a routine oil change and service check at this dealership on January 16 with no engine problems noted.

On Dec. 20, 2022, my Outback totally stopped working while sitting at a red light, causing traffic to be forced to maneuver around my car. A kind policeman put out flares until the tow truck arrived. I could not shift into park, nothing electric would work, except the radio continued to play and the flashers worked until it all died. I could not turn the radio off and the seat would not adjust. The electronic screen flashed on and off until it went totally black, after about an hour. This vehicle only has about 21,000 miles on it and was under warranty until 3 weeks prior to the incident. Every time I took it to the dealership, I explained that the electronics had glitches. They always said it was fixed but it never was right. The TomTom navigation system was totally unreliable from day one; the screen went blank and the radio would not work at all, as well as all the screen functions, without warning. The screen would read out that I should keep my hands on the wheel, although both hands were on the wheel. Over and over it had problems which were not resolved.

•Driver’s window failing to properly and completing retract. This has been particularly troublesome in the bitter cold of Northern Minnesota. On each visit to Subaru I have requested that the window be repaired. All efforts have been unsuccessful. •Battery failure without cause or prior warning signs. On previous visits the Service Center failed to address and resolve the battery problem that I brought. In my most recent visit they referred me to a Legal Settlement action which prevents them from further addressing the battery issue. I brought the vehicle in twice for repair/replacement of the battery. Not resolved. •Eyesight Driver Assist malfunction. Upon presenting the issue, the Service Manager suggested that the cause was sunlight hitting the sensors and he did not work on the issue. Even when I noted that the problem happened in the evening as well as during the daytime, no response. •Check Engine Warning Indicator signifying any number of important malfunctions while also causing Cruise Control, Eyesight, RAB, and other critical, electronic systems to deactivate. More importantly, the Subaru Service Center informed me that there is a life-threatening risk associated with the underlying cause of this Check Engine light appearing, and, consequently, they would not permit me to drive the car from the Service Center until necessary repairs and part replacements were made. I have been waiting over two months for the automobile to be repaired and returned to me. I had previously brought the vehicle in specifically for this issue. At that time the Service Center failed to correct the problem and suggested it would disappear on its own (the warning light would turn off after a number of ignition starts). When I requested that they clearly understand the problem and fix the lighlight warning, the manager refused to continue to work on the vehicle.

The problems I have had or currently have with my vehicle are as follows: 1. On or about November 17, 2022, multiple dash lights, including the check engine light, came on while idling in a parking lot. I turned the engine off for a few minutes and when I restarted the car the lights didn't come back on. I took no further action at that time 2. On November 17, 2022, when starting the engine for the first time that day, numerous lights came on on the dash. The engine was idling and there appeared to be some braking/stuttering not initiated by the driver of the car when it was being driven. The car was returned to our home garage after being driven approximately 1/10 of a mile and another vehicle was driven that day. The Subaru dealer advised to drive the vehicle to his shop in Miami. We took it to Subaru on November 20 and they fixed it that day. The technician said that “The technician completely placed the sensor and told us that the car was fixed. 3. On November 29, 2022, many dash lights, including the check engine light, came on when starting the vehicle for the first time during the day. The engine was more or less idling. The car was driven and the lights eventually went out on their own while running errands. We took the interior to the Subaru dealer. They said the battery would need to be replaced and adjustments made and we returned the Outback to the Subaru dealer on November 29, 2022 for maintenance. They changed the battery and the star/stop and returned the car 3 days later 4. You were driving on the interstate when you started to brake accidentally. This occurred on southbound I-95 just north of boca raton with 2 children in the car as passengers. All the dash lights came on including the check engine light. Less than 10 seconds later, the car began to brake against the driver's will. The interior slowed to 20 mph in less than 100 yards. The vehicle continued to resist my attempts to accelerate.

the car brake, with the foot on the gas all the lights came on and it stopped on the street (traffic being stuck) it's a car safety problem it can cause a serious accident if I end up on I-95, if something happens to me they will be responsible for it I have everything the records and photos of everything that happened to the car Check . what happens to that car with the same failures over and over again in 2 months 3 time on the dealer with the same problem I buy this car on October 2022 and over and over again the same problem

Dec 15, 2022

On Saturday 12/10/2022 at approximately 5PM, I was driving my 2020 Subaru Outback on the left lane of a highway in South Miami at a speed of 65+ miles per hour when the vehicle lost all power. The vehicle’s Eye Sight" system alerted me to "Keep your eyes on the road”, then all of the instrumentation on the dashboard lit up. I was able to maneuver my vehicle through traffic to the relative safety of the right shoulder of the highway. I tried to restart the engine and that was a futile effort. The electrical failure in the vehicle also impacted the hazard lights and now my car was engulfed in darkness on the highway, making a bad situation even worse. I contacted Subaru Starlink and they promised a tow truck within in an hour but later revised the estimate to 11PM. Meanwhile there are 4 women occupants in my vehicle and all are in our 60's. Subaru could not and would not provide us safe transportation off the highway at that time of night due to "liability issues". In the end, I was able to secure my own tow truck and transported my car to a Subaru dealership and transported myself and my passengers to safety. The Subaru dealer informed me that my experience is a known issue with Subaru and that the root cause is a defective valve. This valve is on back order and its availability is impacted by supply chain issues. My car remains at the dealership and I have been provided with a loaner vehicle in the interim. There is no ETA on the repair or when I will have my car back.

Vehicle just quit running going down the road called roadside assistance after approximately two plus hours no help policeman comes along and said need to move car so he called a tow service and within minutes tow truck comes and tows my vehicle to Subaru dealership in Des Moines Ia. This happened last Sunday come Monday morning I get a call about my car they look into the problem told me I had a bad thermal control valve and parts would not be here until December. I asked if I could have it towed to dealership in Bellevue Nebraska where I live they said call Subaru of America and I did I explained the situation to them and they gave me a case number then said they would call the next day it didn’t happen called them back and they say working on it we’ll it’s been a week and still no call back and I don’t know where the car is I feel I’m being blown off

The contact owns a 2020 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle began to jerk and then stalled. The check engine warning light and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was unable to veer to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and continued driving; however, the failure reoccurred that same day. The contact veered to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle. The contact was able to drive to her residence; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the Engine Control Module (ECM) was malfunctioning. The dealer reset the warning lights; however, the failure had recurred more increasingly. The vehicle was then towed to a second dealer, Subaru of Pembroke Pines (16100 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33027) where the fuel pump and high-pressure fuel pump were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The dealer then replaced the Engine Control Module (ECM). The vehicle was not fixed and remained at the dealer since July 12, 2022. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and followed up with the dealer. The contact was awaiting a call back from the manufacturer. A case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 9,846.

1.car accelerated on its own—very scary. (Took the car to Cochran Subaru of Monroeville, but they said nothing was found wrong.) 2. The very next day, the real door would not latch and car would not lock. I reported these two issues to 1-800-SUBARU3. My case # is: 220610-163479 3. we did a “software” update bc we received a recall notice—it was completed at Cochran Subaru of Monroeville sometime in the fall of 2021, in March of 2022 while on vacation in Fla, the radio BLARED on its own, then stopped working altogether for a week or so—then just started working again.

On 3 separate occasions, my transmission has switched from automatic mode to manual “Auto-stick” mode on its own with no input from me. There were no warning lamps or error messages, and the gearshift was still firmly in Drive. This has resulted in 3 near-miss accidents because the car landed in 1st gear even though I was going about 30 mph each time. From my experience driving manual transmission vehicles, I know what happens when a moving vehicle is suddenly jammed into 1st gear—it comes to an immediate, violent stop. On all 3 occasions, I was lucky not to have other cars behind me. But I know I won’t be so lucky forever. Sooner or later, I will be rear-ended when this happens. I have taken the car to the dealership twice for inspection. They told me that they had never heard of nor seen any vehicle doing what I described. Technicians drove it 7 miles and reported no incidents. I knew it was unlikely to happen on command since it has occurred 3 times in 32,000 miles. They told me that Subaru requires dealerships to reproduce issues before undertaking any repairs. Therefore, they returned the vehicle and told me that it absolutely could NOT change modes unless I had bumped or moved the gearshift. Less than 2 weeks later, the defect happened for the third time. I returned to the dealership and insisted they look further into the problem. I involved the Service Dept manager so that my complaint might be taken more seriously. There is an open recall on the transmission for slipping but they said the 2 issues were unrelated. This time they kept the car for a week and drove it 46 miles. They connected a diagnostic computer to the transmission while driving it. But again, I was told since they witnessed no problems, they could do nothing more. I showed them a blog on Edmunds.com from Subaru owners reporting this exact issue beginning in 2011. Owners have taken this to Subaru many times but new cars still do this. Please help. I’m at my wit’s end. Thank you.

3 weeks ago the all of the warning lights came on. Had vehicle towed to dealership. Could not find out what was wrong. Saw there was a lot of carbon build up which was unusual since there is only 26,000 miles on vehicle. After a week a dealership a cleaning took it home. Went back the next day. They inspected and stated it was the spark plugs and needed new fuel injectors. Had replaced. Everything still covered. Picked vehicle up finally after 17 days of it being there. When picking it up the paper work stated the vehicle had cylinder 1 misfires 30-45 times in a 3 hour period. But was assured the vehicle was repaired and fully inspected and 100% safe. Within 24hrs of driving the vehicle. The next morning we drove to school and with after the second light we smelled smoothing rolled windows down and but was sure if it was us. Then had slowed down to turn at the next light to turn to pull over but didn’t get that opportunity before a boom and smoke and flame came and i rushed out of the car and took immediate action and got my 4 year old out of her car seat. Before the whole car was up in flames. I have heard that similar vehicles had similar issues but have had other repairs to deal with it.There was no lights that came on in the vehicle to warn us that something was wrong so thought the smell was from outside. Insurance and the auto maker are inspecting but i had to alert the automaker the dealership wasn’t going to. They stated that the insurance and automaker will just compare notes.

The EyeSight system will randomly not load at times and need to be reset for Rear Automatic Braking and other EyeSight safety features to become available. This usually only occurs within 30 seconds of engine startup but always occurs when plugging in a phone with Android Auto (a phone with Apple Car Play has never been used for verification). Warning message is displayed on driver's side message center stating EyeSight, RAB, and other safety features are not available. Reproduction of problem is difficult as it seems random.

My car stalled at a stop light when I attempted to go when the light turned green. The car was in auto shut off mode so the engine was not running at the time. When I took my foot off the brake to go, the car didn’t restart and started shaking and all the lights on the dash came on. There was also a piercing warning sound and the infotainment screen showed that the “eyesight “ and all other driver assistance program were off but my audiobook continued to play. I tried restarting the car but it would not restart. I put the car in park and tried to get it to turn off but it wouldn’t. Since I was at a light and cars were behind me, I put on my hazards and waited a few minutes and got the car to restart and to get that noise to stop, sounded like a siren. My fuel warning had just come on but it indicated that I had 50 miles so not sure if it has anything to do with it?

The sixth time the car has failed to start due to dead battery. 3 of the 6 were times when the car was driven less than 5 miles and only turned off for a short duration.

11/10/21 first incident: vehicle stalled in middle of dangerous busy road intersection: would not start. After about 15-20 min, it restarted. Drove to Dealer who reported: "battery low, taking too many short trips running down the battery. Many codes found. all referring to low battery". 11/16/21 second incident in remote beach parking lot. After a 30-45 min walk, vehicle would not start. solenoids clicked, engine turned over a few times, but would not start. 15-20 min later, was able to start. Drove to dealer and left vehicle. Tech wondered if problem was maybe not the battery, possible loose wire, but none found immediately. Left car with them. 11/17/21: Dealer called: "bad fuel pump overheating and stopping. once cooled down would run again." Ordered a new part will be here in 2 days. I am not sure of their explanation since the car had a long time in the cold for fuel pump to cool down. If they are right, then the fuel pump must be defective from manufacturer.

The contact owns a 2020 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while enter a freeway the speed suddenly reduced to approximately 15 MPH. The vehicle failed to exceed 15 MPH. Additionally, the vehicle lurched forward and would not immediately stop while depressing the brake pedal. During the failure several warning lights had illuminated including the check engine, brakes, and stability control. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who reprogrammed the computer however, the failure continued. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 23,000.

Battery died at only 10months old. Left stranded for over 4 hours in remote area since we were camping when it happened. Nothing had been left on in the vehicle. Was able to eventually get a jump start and get vehicle to dealer for check. They found battery deeply discharged and recharged but battery died again 2 weeks later. Battery replaced that time. Fear this could happen while driving if i forget to turn off the auto stop/start system or even cause the car to stall while driving and result in loss of braking or control.

The contact owns a 2020 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving 65 mph when multiple warning lights were illuminated and a "Stop Driving the Vehicle" message was displayed. The contact stated he was able to drive to a nearby gas station. The contact stated while inspecting under the hood, he noticed the drive belt was shredded. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the drive belt to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated in February of 2021, the tailgate failed to open with the key fob or manually. The contact stated after opening the tailgate, it failed to latch and close properly. The contact stated the tailgate ajar warning light was illuminated. The local dealer was called and made aware of the failure. The dealer informed the contact to disconnected the battery. The contact followed the instructions and stated the tailgate was functioning properly but in May of 2021, the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to Royal Moore Subaru (1326 SE Enterprise Cir, Hillsboro, OR 97123: (503) 640-5660) where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,500.

IN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP OF MY 2020 SUBARU OUTBACK, I HAVE EXPERIENCED MANY GLITCHES IN THE OPERATION OF THE ELECTRONICA SAFETY DEVICES. THE LATEST HAS BEEN RETURNING TO THE CAR AND FINDING THE BATTERY FULLY DISCHARGED DESPITE NOTHING BEING LEFT IN THE “ON POSITION“. YESTERDAY, AFTER FULLY CHARGING THE BATTERY, FOUR HOURS LATER THE BATTERY WAS FOUND TO BE FULLY DRAINED. I BOOSTED THE CAR AND BEGAN TO DRIVE IT WHEN AT THE FIRST TRAFFIC LIGHT THE AUTO-START-STOP FEATURE SHUT THE CAR OFF AND I COULD NOT RE-START IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION.

MY 2020 SUBARU OUTBACK IS EQUIPPED WITH THE “AUTO-START-STOP “FEATURE. FROM THE BEGINNING THIS FEATURE WOULD ROUTINELY NOT FUNCTION, DISPLAYING THE ICON INDICATING AUTO START STOP WAS DISENGAGED. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO UTILIZE THIS FEATURE I LEARN TWO MORE DELIBERATELY HOLD DOWN FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND I COULD ENGAGE THIS FEATURE AT TIMES. NINE TIMES OUT OF 10 THE AUTO START STOP FEATURE DOES NOT ENGAGE WHEN I STOP IN DRIVE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BREAK AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR AT A STOP SIGN. VERY OFTEN, THE FEATURE TURNS OFF MY ENGINE AND IMMEDIATELY RESTARTS WITH A RUMBLING OF THE ENGINE AND AN ABRUPT “KICK“ TO THE STEERING WHEEL. EVEN WHEN THE FEATURE ENGAGES AND SHUTS OFF THE ENGINE AS EXPECTED, THE DURATION OF STOP MODE IS A LIMITED TO NO MORE THAN 20 SECONDS WHICH DEFEATS THE ORIGINAL INTENDED PURPOSE OF FUEL CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS REDUCTION. OCCASIONALLY AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, SUCH AS WHEN WAITING TO MAKE A LEFT IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC, THE FEATURE DOES NOT ENGAGE AT FIRST STOP AND AFTER INCHING FORWARD AND READY TO MAKE THE TURN THIS FEATURE WELL ABRUPTLY STALL THE ENGINE AND STRAND ME MOMENTARILY IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

ON 3 OCCASIONS THE CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER BEING DRIVEN. THE DASHBOARD LIT UP, RADIO WORKED, BUT NO STARTER OR ENGINE NOISE. SUBARU SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR OR BATTERY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON SUBARU PROBLEM.

AUTO ON-OFF FUNCTION SHUTS OFF ENGINE WHEN VEHICLE STOPS IN TRAFFIC FOR ANY REASON. THE ENGINE IS TO RESTART WHEN DRIVER STEPS ON ACCELERATOR...HOWEVER THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. MANY TIMES THE ENGINE FAILS TO START WHICH CAUSES THE DRIVER TO BELIEVE THE ACCELERATOR NEEDS MORE PRESSURE. WHEN THE ENGINE DOES FINALLY START THE CAR LEAPS FORWARD SINCE IT IS STILL IN FORWARD GEAR. THIS FORWARD LEAP IS VERY DANGEROUS SINCE ITHE LEAP IS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. MOST DRIVERS TURN OFF THIS FUNCTION HOWEVER THE DRIVER TURN OFF SELECTION IS VOIDED ONCE THE CAR IS TURNED OFF. THE DRIVER MUST REMEMBER TO CANCEL THIS AURO-OFF FUNCTION EVERY TIME THE CAR IS STARTED SUBARU HAS RECEIVED MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS FUNCTION AND HAS DECIDED TO RELOCATE THE OFF-ON ICON TO A FRONT SCREEN RATHER THAN THE PREVIOUS 3RD SCREEN. THE CORRECT FIX WOULD SEEM TO BE ONCE THE DRIVER SELECTS TO SHUT OFF THIS FUNCTION IT SHOULD NOT OVERRIDE THE OFF SELECTION UNLESS INITATED BY THE DRIVER. ONCE I SHUT OFF MY RADIO IT STAYS OFF UNTIL TIRNED ON AGAIN. SUBARU SERVICE PROGRAM WRI-20 JANURARY 2021

WIFE REPORTED CAR STALLED WHEN MAKING A TURN AFTER STOPPING. WHILE TURNING SHE SAID IT FELT LIKE THE CAR WAS NOT GETTING ANY GAS AND HAD NO POWER. SHE LET THE VEHICLE ROLL TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. SHE SAID IT TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS FOR THE CAR TO START BACK UP. THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES TODAY DURING A TRIP TO THE DENTIST IN THE CITY OF LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA. I CALLED TERRY SUBARU OF LYNCHBURG WHEN SHE GOT HOME AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME TO BRING IT IN TOMORROW TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2020 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH EXITING THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHAKE THEN STALLED. THE CHECK ENGINE, OIL AND BATTERY WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK QUICKLY. THE CONTACT WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE WITH NO SHOULDER. THE CONTACT WAITED THIRTY SECONDS TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE STARTED TO SHAKE AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO RESTART. THE TOW TRUCK OPERATOR ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO REYNOLDS' SUBARU (268 HAMBURG RD, LYME, CT 06371) HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE REMAINED AT THE DEALER. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE DEALER INFORMED HER THAT NATIONAL SUBARU INFORMED THEM TO RETURN THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT SHE DIS NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE SHE TRANSPORTED HER GRANDCHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE REMAINED AT THE DEALER FOR TWO WEEKS AND A DAY STILL UNREPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND A CASE NUMBER WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,950.

THERE IS NO WAY TO DISABLE THE AUTO START/STOP SYSTEM. IN FLORIDA THE TEMP CAN GET OVER 95 DEGREES. AFTER 10-15 SECONDS OF THE CAR BEING OFF THE CAR STARTS TO HEAT UP. MY WIFE WHO HAS BREATHING PROBLEMS STARTS HAVING PROBLEMS. I HAVE ASK THE DEALER TO PERMANENTLY DISABLE THIS FEATURE BUT THEY SAID NO. YOU CAN DO IT EACH TIME YOU START THE CAR BUT IT IS SEVERAL SCREENS DEEP ON THE INFORMATION SYSTEM. PEOPLE WHO DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR OFTEN (LIKE MY WIFE) WOULD HAVE TROUBLE TURNING THIS FEATURE OFF AND COULD PASS OUT SITTING AT A LIGHT. I RECOMMEND SUBARU OFFER A WAY TO DISABLE THIS FEATURE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE BREATHING ISSUES. AT A VERY MINIMUM THEY NEED TO MOVE THE DISABLING OF THIS FEATURE ON EVERY START TO THE MAIN INFORMATION SCREEN WHERE ANYONE CAN FIND IT.

BATTERY IS INADEQUATE FOR THE ELECTRONICS IN THIS CAR AND WILL BE DEAD IF NOT DRIVEN OFTEN. AFTER BEING A UNABLE TO START MY CAR TWICE WITHIN A MONTH, THE SERVICE MANAGER ADMITTED THIS WAS A DESIGN FLAW, THERE IS NO OTHER UPGRADE OR REPLACEMENT FOR THE BATTERY AND THAT THE FACTORY RECOMMENDATION IS TO DRIVE THE CAR EVERY OTHER DAY. THIS MEANS THAT WHEN I TRAVEL AND LEAVE MY CAR IN AN AIRPORT PARKING LOT FOR A WEEK OR MORE, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO START THE CAR WHEN I RETURN. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME TO DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE POST AT THE AIRPORT, THEN RECONNECT THE POST WHEN I RETURN. I AM A 65-YEAR OLD WOMAN AND NOT A MECHANIC. THIS CAR IS UNRELIABLE AND IS A SAFETY RISK FOR ME WHEN I RETURN TO A PARKING LOT LATE AT NIGHT AND MY VEHICLE WILL NOT START. IT HAS LESS THAN 5,000 MILES. *TR
