I AM FILING THIS REPORT AS A MATTER OF CAUTION AND NOT DUE TO A FAILURE THAT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED. I OWN THIS PARTICULAR MODEL MOTORCYCLE AND HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF SEVERAL SUBFRAME FAILURES. THESE FAILURES ARE DUE TO A DEFECT RESULTING IN AN ACTUAL BREAKAGE OF THE REAR SUBFRAME. THE BREAKAGE IN THE SUBFRAME PRESENTS A SERIOUS HAZZARD TO THE DRIVER AND ANY POTENTIAL PASSENGER. I HAVE A CONCERN THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAS MADE A CHANGE IN LATER MODEL YEAR MOTORCYCLES, KNOWING THIS SITUATION EXISTED, BUT HAS NOT RECALLED THE QUESTIONABLE SUBFRAMES THAT ARE IN USE ON THOUSANDS OF MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURED AS 1999 AND 2000 YEAR MODELS. WENT RIDING ON A SATURDAY AND NOTICED MOTORCYCLE WAS HANDLING VERY WEIRD AND IT ACTUALLY SEEMED TO BE "LONGER" THAN NORMAL. WHEN I GOT HOME I NOTICED THE BACK HALF OF MY MOTORCYCLE WAS SEVERAL INCHES LOWER THAN NORMAL AND THE REAR TIRE WAS LESS THAN AN INCH FROM THE REAR FENDER. AFTER AN INSPECTION OF MOTORCYCLE, THE SUBFRAME BROKE ON BOTH SIDES, CAUSING THE BACK HALF OF THE BIKE TO FALL OVER 4-6 INCHES. THE FAILURE PUT A HOLE IN MY EXHAUST AND BURNED A GOOD PORTION OF THE STOCK BODY WORK. AFTER A LITTE RESEARCH, SUZUKI HAD A RECALL ON THIS PART IN EUROPE...NOT THE US...AND WITH THE 2001 MODELS, THE PART WAS REPLACED WITH STEEL. I AM IMPACTED BECAUSE NO AFTERMARKET LUGGAGE MANUFACTURER WILL PRODUCE LUGGAGE FOR A MOTORCYCLE WITH KNOWN REAR SUBFRAME FAILURES. SUZUKI'S POSITION ON THIS ISSUE IS COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE; THEY SAY THE GSX1300R WAS 'NOT DESIGNED TO CARRY LUGGAGE'. THIS IS LIKE A CAR MANUFACTURER SAYING, AFTER THE FACT, THAT YOU CANNOT USE A ROOF RACK, OR A TRUCK MANUFACTURER SAYING YOU CANNOT TOW A TRAILER. THE GSX1300R WAS MCN 1999 SPORT TOURING MOTORCYCLE OF THE YEAR; NOW SUZUKI SAYS IT CANNOT CARRY LUGGAGE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SUZUKI FORCED TO RECALL / REPLACE ALL OF THE ALLOY SUBFRAMES WITH THE AVAILABLE STEEL SUBFRAME.
