The contact owns a 2016 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 MPH and making a right turn there was an abnormal sound coming from the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. The contact stated then started to smell a burning rubber odor. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact became aware that the front passenger’s side wheel had seized in a right turn position and was rubbing against the wheel well. The contact had the vehicle towed to the residence. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE20020 (Suspension). The failure mileage was 60,348.

Car was making a rattling noise and no indication on the car indicating that it was a suspension issue. Drove for a few months without realizing that it was a suspension and hence a safety problem. Took it to the Tesla Service Center and they diagnosed as a suspension problem and said that it was unsafe to drive the car. The repair at Tesla to replace the links (aft, fore, sway bar) and spring/damper assembly was $5809.71;

I was backing out of a parking space and the front driver side fore link broke. Internet search reveals this is a known issue associated with Tesla Model S during the period mine was manufactured (February 2016), caused an investigation & service bulletin from the NHTSA, and a recall in China, hence I wanted to report this occurence.

on 5/20/25, I had my Tesla repaired as I had suspension issues. They repaired my car to rectify my suspension for both my front and rear tires. Then on 6/12/25, I was driving on the highway and going about 70-75 mph when I heard a huge pop. No warning indicators came on and something did not feel right. I figured nothing else came of it. I was about 30 miles away from home and when I got home, my tire was pushed inward. I was concerned on whether this was related to a bad repair since it was so soon to my previous repair and they indicated that they did not touch that area. After they saw my video, they indicated that the lower control arm of my rear tire broke and they indicated that this was just a damaged component. My biggest concern is that if this issue was not related to the repair work done a month ago, this could be bigger issue as I could have been very concerning that this part broke when I was driving at high speeds and I think it's warranted to check on the quality of the component. In my 40 plus years of driving, I have never experienced this happened to me. If you need documentation or video of how the tire and the axle looks, I can forward it to you. The vehicle has only been inspected by the Tesla Dealership service center and as stated earlier, there weren't any warning signs or messages that showed as I specifically was looking for it when I heard the loud pop.

In December of 2023, my RIGHT rear axle broke when I accidently hit a curb. The car was repaired at the Tesla collision center. On last Tuesday, November 12, 2024, I heard a noise while braking. I continued to drive, but next time I needed to use brakes, I had a sensation that the brakes were failing, and I wouldn't be able to stop. The brakes eventually engaged, and I was able to stop the vehicle. I went on an expressway and drove as slowly as possible, maintaining a long distance from the vehicles in front of me and using regenerative braking as much as possible, being aware of a possibility of brakes failure. I got home safely on that day, however, the next day, when I was backing out of the garage, I heard a screeching noise. When I inspected the vehicle, I discovered that the LEFT rear wheel was misaligned, looking exactly like the right rear wheel after the right rear axle broke. Although this defect hasn't been inspected by a technician yet, I am virtually certain that it's the same problem that I had before, now occurring on the opposite side. This means that I was likely driving with a broken axle, which could've resulted in a serious accident. As I mentioned, this is the second instance of the same defect affecting my vehicle, which, in my opinion, is indicative of a serious manufacturing defect that needs to be addressed. The vehicle hasn't been repaired yet and is available for inspection. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the failure.

I was slowly backing up to charge my car and heard a thump then my wheel was rubbing against the wheel well. When I looked under the wheel to see what was happening, I discover the metal suspension had snapped off. This was the front passenger side.

2016 Model S started making clunking sounds when turning and braking. Tesla service center inspected the vehicle and observed visible defects on the front left and right fore and aft links. Tesla recommended replacement of and quoted almost $2000 for parts and labor, including inspection fee. Vehicle only has 89000 miles and never had high impact incidents over obstacles.

while parking the vehicle, a loud shot gun like noise eminated from the front of the car. The car was being driven at less than 5 mph. After this there was loud noises from the front of the cars suspension. The car seemed unsafe to drive farther. I took it to the tesla service center the next day driving at a very low speed. they replaced the right and left front contol arms and charged me $1204.98 on October 26, 2023. The vehicle had 77,626 miles at that point. I queried them as to why this would ocurr at such low mileage and vehicle age? I got not response other than these things happen and the car is out of the normal warranty and the extended warranty. I paid the invoice since i agreed to the repair estimate earlier.

The lower control arm on my left rear tire broke. Specifically, the aluminum of the knuckle joint snapped. This occured in my driveway while backing up. This caused extensive damage to the rest of the rear left suspension.

While backing out of a parking spot, I turned my wheels and went over a small depression in the drive for drainage. As my front tires went through the dip I heard a loud clank like something had broken. Then every bump I went over there was a knocking near the driver's side front tire. I took it in to Tesla and the service agent knew exactly right away what had happened because he said he has seen the same exact thing several times before. They explained that it was unsafe to drive and needed to be fix it immediately. When given the estimate they said only the driver's side Fore Link assembly broke but would need to replace both sides. I got a bill for $2150.61.

When I was driving in the parking lot and turned to park at a parking spot I heard a sound from the passenger side front wheel. After I heard the sound the wheel felt stuck and was not moving freely. There were two other passengers in the car along with the driver. This is the second time that this happened. It happened first on Oct 2021 when the car's mileage was 51k and the second time when the mileage was 77k. The Model S was purchased in 2016. Tesla service center fixed it the first time and the repair listed the following 1>Fore Link Assembly LH(1041570-00-B) 2>Washer Nordlock(1033093-00-A) 3>Nut HF M14x1.50 ZnNi NL Insert(1004358-00-C) Tesla charged me $495 for it. The second time this happened the damage was a lot more extensive and Tesla recommended I take the car to a Tesla-approved body shop. I took the car to Brooks Automotive in Fremont and they charged me $10,000 for the repairs. My insurance refused to pay for the damages after I filed a claim with the insurance. Tesla refused to pay for it claiming it was not a manufacturing defect and the car was not under warranty. This car is driven by me and my wife and neither of us are rash drivers. We did not hit any debris on the road or remember an incident that could have led to this happening not once but twice. The car has been driven normally and used for normal family activities on public paved roads.

The fore link assembly on the drivers side of the car failed while pulling backwards out of a parking space at low speed. There was a loud snap and then the front suspension collapsed and the tire contacted the inside of the wheel well. I will attach a picture of the aluminum piece that I found on the ground and I also have the piece in the case you would like it. Tesla did not cover the cost of repair although they replaced both the right and the left fore link (sound like this is a very well documented failure Tesla TSB-17-31-001)

Was merging onto the the highway when all of a sudden, my passenger rear suspension gave out nearly causing me to crash into highway traffic. The wheel almost came off completely causing $14K of damage that I was responsible for paying for.

Halfshaft and Control arm broke while backing up from a Walmart store. Tesla dealer diagnosed it but the repair was not covered. I had to pay out of pocket but this could have been prevented it the car was recalled.

Front air suspension failed while driving on the highway at 70 MPH while traveling from El P Paso, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico in July on 2023. front end of the car hit the ground and could not steer without tire grinding into the wheel well. Upon getting the car inspected for the problem, it was found that the front left air suspension had malfunctioned and because of the way the air suspension works, neither right or left side of the suspension would hold air and keep front of the car off the road. Cost of repairs was $1258.95 which Tesla refused to admit there was a design flaw that would render the car undrivable.

I was backing into a spot and felt the fromt.left tire pull.I then took it too tesla and they told me that the front left fore link was broken. This is a manufacturer issue why are they not responsible.

This is the third lower control arm to fail in this vehicle. Left front, left rear and now front right. All failures are the same, cracked castings at the ball joint or bushing. This vehicle has had to be towed in all three times as the wheel is no longer property connected to the frame and is undrivable without vehicle damage. Seriously, NHTSA needs to stop worrying about FSD and go investigate these suspension failures. At 50K miles, this is unacceptable and extremely dangerous. Luckily my failures have happened at slow speeds. If these failures happen at high speed, total loss if steering is possible. Please go after Tesla for these defects. These parts must be redesigned and replaced on Model S vehicles on the road today.

The driver's side front suspension control arm (aka "fore link") spontaneously snapped. This occurred when I started the car in the garage, and began to slowly back out. The terrain was level and smooth, and my speed was under 5mph. One piece of the assembly fell from the car and is in my possession. The car was rendered undriveable.

while backing out from the garage at speed below 5 MPH I heard loud snapping sound from the front suspension, then immediately rubbing sound of the front passenger tire against the wheel well. Had the car towed to Tesla dealer in Burlingame CA, and upon inspection has been advised that Front Fore link assembly left and right have to be replaced at my expense since vehicle is out of warranty, yet only has 20k miles on it. If this happened while driving on the freeway the consequences would have been much more dire as reflates to safety. There was absolutely no warning signs that these critical parts are about to fail- absolutely shocking, yet Tesla refused to accept responsibility and Goodwill the repair cost. I am attaching the Tesla service invoice and the pictures of the broken fore link piece I have found underneath the car.

The right front suspension "Lower Fore Link" broke under braking. The Fore Link broke/separated from the ball joint connecting it to the right spindle/upright, causing loss of directional and braking control. The damaged Four Link is available for inspection. Once the Fore Link broke, any braking caused the wheel to move rearward and contact the body wheel arch liner. Once the body contacted the tire, it rode up on the rotating tire, causing the front end to rise and bounce up and down. Under my situation, with my advanced driving experience, I was able to bring the car to a stop before hitting the cars stopped ahead. But under more severe braking conditions, or lower experienced driver, the car might not be able to stop in time, putting me, my passengers, and those of any cars in front of the car at risk. This problem is documented by Tesla Technical Service Bulletin SB-17-31-001. The vehicle and defective component has been inspected by the local Tesla Service Center in Carlsbad CA, but not by any police/insurance/other representative. There were no warnings in advance of the failure.

The front suspension has failed at 124,947 miles and this is unheard of in a 6 year old car. There have been issues with this model S 2016 which Tesla is unwilling to recall and replace. The rear suspension had to be redone in 2021 with less than 100,000 miles

Right rear suspension lower control arm part # 1021416-00-D broke on bushing mount with no warning while driving the car at 40 mph,… this part is available for your inspection and looks like corrosion may have played a part in this failure. This failure could have caused an accident as the car became uncontrollable especially if it failed while driving on a freeway. The dealer manufacturer/Tesla replaced this part and inspected it. No warning of this parts failure was given by the vehicle.

This vehicle had the driver side lower suspension connector link crack and fail at the lower ball joint at 22K miles. Now at 50K miles, the rear drivers side lower control arm has failed in the same way, In both cases, this is either due to a design defect or manufacturing defect. I have included pictures of both the front and rear links.

While pulling out of a parking space at less than 5 mph the front left suspension fore link broke, resulting in damage to the wheel liner. The left front wheel could be described as loose or wobbly and resting at less than 1 cm from the rear side of the wheel liner, making turning nearly impossible. If this had happened at a higher speed it could have been catastrophic. There was no warning measures on the vehicle but a series of unusual metal grinding noises could be heard immediately after the break. The vehicle was placed on a flatbed and towed to the local Tesla, Inc. repair location where it was inspected and repaired. All 4 front lower fore links were replaced both on the left and right side for a total cost of approximately $2000.

While driving, left front lower fore link broke. Front wheel became lose in the fender well. Smashing the wheel front and back in the well, whilst pulling the car very hard to the left. Front link completely broken. Inspection shows, two rear links cracked and ready to break . Telsa knows about this in Safety Bulletin SB-17-31-001 . They did not notify us. And additionally refuse to fix it unless we pay over $10,000 in repairs. I purchased this car brand new. Has never been wrecked, well serviced and well maintained.

Tesla vehicles suffer excessive “toe-in” wear on all tires. Tesla claims it is a function of the vehicle being heavy and that it is “normal” Tires have to be replaced every 12-24 months as a result of the inner portion showing cord, wire, and losing air. The tread on the rest of the tires appears to have 1/8 to 1/4 inch of usable tread however all tires have to be replace as a result of the toe in. Vehicle was repeatedly aligned by Tesla but that did not alleviate the issue. Presents a real danger as the portion of the tire dangerously worn down is on the most inner side of the tire. Not easily visible.

While driving with Auto Pilot engaged on the highway, traffic slowed and AP applied the brakes at a light to moderate level. I immediately heard a loud squeal come from the front passenger wheel area that stopped when braking stopped. No warning lights or messages showed but I could tell I had reduced steering response after disengaging AP. I was able to get off the highway and navigate to a nearby service center, where they told me that a ball joint had sheared off. The squeal was a result of the tire contacting the wheel well. The service estimate called for replacement of right and left fore link and aft link assemblies of the front suspension. A web search revealed that Tesla was aware that "Some Model S and Model X vehicles may have been manufactured with front suspension fore links that may not meet Tesla strength specifications," per service bulletin SB-17-31-001.

Drivers side suspension fore-link failed while driving. There was no warning, simply a loud "clunk" sound. I was able to limp the vehicle home, and then to the service center several days later. The fore-link completely failed while driving to the service center, causing the wheel to interfere with the inner fender, requiring us to stop. The dealer replaced the fore-link, however, we were required to pay for the replacement. There is currently a TSB for this issue, however, Tesla indicated that our VIN wasn't included, despite being within the dates of manufacture listed on the TSB. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10110741-9999.pdf Do I have any recourse to get Tesla to reimburse me for the cost of replacing my fore links? When backing up in a level parking lot, heard a loud crunch (something like rolling over a large plastic beverage bottle). Subsequently, heard frequent "scraping" sounds when turning. Took to Tesla for service - technician diagnosed "broken lower driver side forelink" - replaced (at cost of $701.36 to me). Technician reported "inspected passenger side forelink and did not need to be replaced." Tesla did NOT give me the replaced (broken) part.

While backing out in my driveway, which has a gentle slope, the front suspension link broke and the front part of the chassis/fender scraped against the driveway surface making scraping sounds of friction and damage underneath the front fender. It is certainly a safety issue and I am glad I was still near home and not on the road, especially highway. I could see a broken metal part on the driveway which I showed the service personnel. The car has barely 45000 miles on it. It is used solely for city driving on mostly flat roads (including Cupertino to Palo Alto office commute). I bought the car in August 2018 from a certified used car dealer with 18000 miles on it. The car was not driven that much during the pandemic closure for about 1.5 years. There was never a service reminder sent by Tesla. So this is completely unwarranted that a critical part like suspension link will randomly break apart! I see that this is an issue known to NHTSA (https://www.reuters.com/article/tesla-safety-investigation-idINKBN2871ES), but I did not receive any recall notice from Tesla. Therefore the service station is charging me full money for the broken fore link as well as the yet unbroken fore link on the other side, and suggesting that I replace the aft links too. This seems totally unfair that the customer has to pay large sum for a mechanical failure known to Tesla.

The contact stated while driving approximately 15 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed to avoid hitting an animal and the suspension detached from the vehicle as wheel well the front driver’s side wheel was loosened and the wheel rail liner was fractured. The contact stated that no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that he was able to drive the vehicle back to the residence. The local Tesla Service Center was contacted; however, the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The dealer informed the contact that the suspension needed to be replaced but the part was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 44,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, he heard an abnormally loud sound come from the driver’s side wheel. The contact pulled over and inspected the wheel but did not see an issue. The contact stated that he continued driving and while driving approximately 35 MPH, the driver’s side wheel detached and went into the wheel well. The vehicle then began to steer slowly to the left independently and the contact was able to get the vehicle into a parking lot. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to his place of employment. The local Tesla dealer was contacted however, the cause of the failure not yet determined. The dealer informed the contact that the driver’s side control arm needed to be replaced but the part was not available. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the contact was informed that the failure was not related to the control arm, but that the wheel well and the front fascia lower valence needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,466.

I purchased a used 2016 Tesla Model S in September 2021, with 58,961 miles. Within a month, a strange scraping sound can be heard as I was backing out of my driveway, it was the metal piece that was connected to the wheel. Somehow it had broken off and was bent in a position where it was grinding my brake pads down to unsafe levels. Telsa said it was caused by making a 'sharp turn' and is not covered under warranty. The work to fix costed $1450.03 to replace brake pads and wheel that was cracked. But didn't disclose in the invoice what was causing the scraping sound. They claimed that when they drove the vehicle they could not hear any scraping sound. Based on Tesla's TSB report, this is a known defect and Tesla should have repaired it without charging me. But they would rather have me believe that I was a terrible driver.

My car has only 50,000 miles but suspension is making noise. Tesla dealer is saying they need to replace the Links - Front Suspension - Lower - Aft -LH/RH. Tesla is charging me $1,828.87 to replace these links. I see in the internet that lot of 2016/2017 made cars has this defect. I strongly believe this is manufacturing defect and Tesla is responsible for fixing this issue for all effected customers. I appreciate if you can investigate into this issue.

Lh suspension fore link broke causing tire to rub inner wheel well while driving at around 30mph resulting in damage to tire and wheel well liner .... car was not able to be driven ..... Tesla service center was not willing to repair under warranty or good will even though they issued a tsb regarding certain 2016 model s cars having suspension parts that were not up to Tesla quality standards and could result in failure

I could hear a noise in the front suspension while driving. Upon returning home the front driver side suspension collapsed while I was parking the car. The front suspension link broke and the wheel was rubbing against the arch liner. I was lucky that the failure occurred at very low speed but the damage could have been significant if it had happened just a few minutes earlier, while driving.

Drivers side fore links broke under warranty. Per Tesla Service bulletin SB-17-31-001 filed February 17, 2017 for automobiles manufactured between January 19 and May 25, 2016, if one of the fore links break both should be replaced. Per the attached invoice and scree shots, Teslas service center in Raleigh is refusing to follow the bulletin citing that the vehicles ein is not eligible but showing no proof. Attached is an email from that shows the car finished manufacturing on May 8,2016. I'm requesting Tesla to follow their service bulletin and include replacing the passenger side fore link as part of their warranty service.

Suspension Component: RH Front Aft Control Link - I will provide the damaged/exploded part via FEDEX to your office. Event happened while backing out of garage, was under 5miles speed and hence nobody was injured or put at risk. Could have gone worst if this would have happened at higher speed/highway. There was no prior warning, corrosion and/or indication alerting of wear & tear on the part that was broken. This car has very low mileage (44k miles over 6 yrs) for some major component to fail like this without notice.

I was traveling on HWY 98 in Florida, headed home to Austin, TX from vacationing. I was with my wife and three young children. I stopped at a stop light, and when I went to reaccelerate, the car lurched. I pulled over and discovered I could barely turn and the suspension was making a terrible sound. I was able to maneuver into a parking lot and determined that my front driver's side fore link had cracked and was no longer holding. There is an existing Service Bulletin (SB-17-31-006) that should have covered this. My car is in warranty, and I have had it serviced before the accident, but after the publishing of the SB and Tesla never notified me that the links should be replaced. This was a tremendous hassle, and posed a very serious safety issue, because the broken link can protrude through the wheel well can cause the wheel to lock up.

Suspension control arm failure on front left and right. It happened twice on two separate occasions while driving. Before failure it was making a creaking sound. It failed while driving on both occasions. The first failure happened pulling out of the driveway. The second failure happened driving down the street and it certainly put myself and others on the road at risk. Speed was fairly slow when it failed ~20 mph. Nevertheless, it was a busy street with cars going fast around us. The upper control arm broke on both occasions. The car is driven as one would expect. Around town and regular highway driving. No other accidents, off-roading, no notable potholes, etc. Unfortunately, even after recent repairs it is again making the same sounds that it made right before the previous failures. Tesla is refusing to fix the defects. This is likely the same issue as the recall in China.

The Driverside Front suspension fore links completely failed and broke off, and separated and it made the Tire shift towards the the wheel arch liner and rub against it which damaged the tire and the wheel arch liner. And it caused the Front suspension LINK bushing to become damaged as well when the FRONT SUSPENSION FORE LINK broke ( the metal completely broke in half & became separated from each other ) because the two links are connected together to the front suspension arm wishbone on top when I was driving down a residential street going 20 mph, there was a small dip in the road so I slowed down to about 5 mph and after the dip I noticed this loud sound coming from my front tire & wheel. I think it was already cracked and the dip made it come off. Because that small dip could not of had the torque & power to do that to the metal on the front suspension Fore link. I own 2016 TESLA MODEL S 75. I researched and Many teslas are having the same problem!! Tesla even put out a service bulletin SB-17-31-001 stating “Some Model S and Model X vehicles may have been manufactured with front suspension fore links that may not meet Tesla strength specifications. In the event of link failure, the driver can still maintain control of the vehicle but the tire may contact the wheel arch liner.“-years affected 2016 OMG Which exactly happened to my 2016 TESLA MODEL S 75!! Now I found there’s a class action lawsuit vs Tesla and NHTSA INVESTIGATION about the same exact matter! My car is not driveable, I called Tesla roadside to get it towed to Tesla service center, they told me I would have to pay for the tow!! I made a service appt but it’s not until another 7 days! I’m waiting to find out if Tesla will cover the cost to fix it?? 🤞

Driver side fore link failure, driver side suspension collapsed on the tire. The car came to an immediate stop. The car did go up in the air for some time before stopping. Since the driver side fore link failed, Tesla said that they have to change both the fore links.

The contact owns a 2016 Tesla Model S. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH, he heard a popping sound coming from the vehicle. The contact exited the vehicle and inspected the vehicle but found no failure. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact continued driving however, at 5 MPH he heard another popping sound. The contact called a local towing company to have the vehicle towed to the dealer. While attempting to place the vehicle on the flatbed, the contact was informed that a large metallic part had fractured and detached from the vehicle. The dealer’s diagnostic result was that the driver’s side front lower fore link collar had broken off the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired out of pocket. The mechanic was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

Car was being pulled out of parking spot and front suspension failed. TESLA rode side service took car to TESLA dealer. TESLA said car was too heavy for parts and now the knuckles and the fore links for the front suspension need to be replaced. The car had a full alignment in February and everything was good. The right Front Lower Control Arm broke off. When I applied the break (abruptly) at the light ( driving speed ~35mph and the street was wet), the front right wheel was bouncing and making a weird noise. I managed to drive home and found out that the control arm has broken off. I did some research and realized that this is a common problem with Tesla vehicles. I am wondering if this is a recall issue. This is a safety issue and I think Tesla needs to recall and fix this problem.

The contact owns a 2016 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 - 35 MPH, a loud bang noise was heard, then the front passenger’s side tire kicked back and damaged the wheel. Upon inspection, the contact saw that the front passenger’s side control arm was fractured. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

While backing out of a parking stall I felt a large vibration. I could tell something wasn't right. I pulled out of the parking lot and checked my tires and brakes as every time I pressed the brake pedal I felt the vibration. I couldn't tell what was going on, but the car was not driving correctly. I slowly drove to a nearby tire center when they diagnosed it as a broken control arm on the driver's side. No collisions took place before or after, nor was a pot hole or other road hazard hit before.

I have had to bring the car in for vibration in the front drivers wheel/tire over 3 times in less than 5 years. A part of the suspension was replace once or twice and I was told that I needed several tires replace less than 10,000 miles of wear. The problem has returned again with both vibration and noise, yet I can't get an appointment for 3 weeks after I reported the issue. I can't find any of my receipts for these repairs as they don't communicate in a way that is useful to humans and there is little record of it.

Pulling my car out of my driveway, I heard a loud pop noise and the steering wheel refused to turn. Attempting to turn the wheel at all resulted in a grinding noise because the entire front driver side wheel was shifted backward and was resting on the rear of the wheel well liner. I had the vehicle flatbedded to the Tesla service center and they told me one of the fore links had failed. They blamed it on an impact or pothole, neither of which actually happened. After researching online, I've come to find there have been many documented failures of this same part - for no reason at all. Tesla even recognized they had a manufacturing issue and even issued a recall in China. This could have been a very dangerous situation. There was no warning, no cause, and the car has only 50k miles. I asked them to save the parts as I'm sure upon expert examination, they would prove to be defective.

The contact stated that the failure caused damage to the passenger’s side front fender. The contact took the vehicle to a Tesla service center where the mechanic discovered a defective front fore link. Due to the failure, the driver’s and passenger’s side fore links were replaced at the service center's recommendation. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

May 1, 2021 Heard some noise from front of car and then went away. Loud noise coming from the right front side of car when we back up from parking spot. Car literally cannot move an inch but we had to move car out of traffic. No warnings from the car. We saw the right front tire literally touching the back liner. Tesla towed car to Tesla service center which is almost 3 hours away from home. Weekend road trip cut short. Service center was closed. Rental car companies nearby closed. Uber voucher not enough to cover fee. Service found RF fore links broken, and RF fender liner damage and replacement of 2 front tires and alignment. Estimate of $1602.90. Back in 2020 September, I heard soft noise coming from left front. Tesla took care of it under warranty. But we asked if they should inspect and replaced the right side. They refused. Now manager said that it’s wear and tear and refused to cover under warranty when it’s still under 50,000 miles. I asked them about condition of back links and they did not inspect or given estimates for replacement for back links after 7 requests. Manager told me it’s super pricy labor alone is around $700. We feel it’s a serious safety concern. We were lucky this didn’t happen on a highway. The parts definitely broke pre maturely. Also has to file with warranty department with written letter to dispute the charge now. What a hassle. They should recall asap.

AS I WAS PULLING OUT MY PARKING SPACE AT WORK AT ABOUT 2 MILES AN HOUR I HEARD A LOUD THUMP AND I THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS UNDER MY TIRE. AFTER GETTING OUT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED A 2-3" PIECE OF ALUMINUM NEXT TO MY FRONT LEFT TIRE. I ATTEMPTED TO PULL THE CAR BACK INTO MY PARKING SPOT AND THE LOUD NOISE CONTINUED. I LEFT THE CAR AT WORK OVERNIGHT AND INSPECTED IT THE FOLLOWING MORNING AND NOTICED THAT THE SUSPENSION ARM WAS BROKEN. LUCKILY THIS DID NOT HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING AS THIS COULD HAVE KILLED ME. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON A TESLA FORUM, I LEARNED THAT THIS EXACT BREAK OF THE SUSPENSION ARM IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMMON ON THE S AND X MODELS WITH SOME PRETTY SCARY CONSEQUENCES. TESLA NEEDS TO DO A RECALL ON THIS BECAUSE IF THEY DON'T THERE WILL BE LIVES LOST.

CAR SUSPENSION FELT LOOSE AND WEIRD. UNDER NORMAL DRIVING (CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS), CHANGING LANES OR GOING OVER ROADS WITH SLIGHT CROWN OR RUTS CAUSED THE CAR TO SUDDENLY PULL AND SHIFT ERRATICALLY (ABOVE AND BEYOND THAT EXPERIENCED IN OTHER CARS). IT FELT AS IF THERE'S SOMETHING NOT RIGHT WITH THE FRONT SUSPENSION. WHEN THIS HAPPENED ON HIGHWAYS WHILE USING AUTOPILOT (EXPERIENCED AT LEAST THREE TIMES), THE CAR SWERVED LEFT AND RIGHT ERRATICALLY (AFTER CHANGING LANES) IN AN EFFORT TO RE-CENTER ON THE LANE WITHOUT SUCCESS, AND I HAD TO TAKE OVER MANUALLY IN OVER TO AVOID FROM FLIPPING OVER OR AN ACCIDENT. TESLA SERVICE CENTER INSPECTED THE CAR IN LATE 2019 AND SAID EVERYTHING IS NORMAL. THEY PERFORMED A 4-WHEEL ALIGNMENT BUT DID NOT IMPROVE THE BEHAVIOR. THIS BEHAVIOR HAS GOTTEN WORSE OVER THE PAST YEAR AND IS VERY CONCERNING. I ONLY HAVE A LITTLE OVER 30K MILES ON THIS CAR, AND THEREFORE DO NOT EXPECT SUSPENSION FAILURE AT THIS LOW MILES.

THERE WAS NO SOUND OR ANYTHING, THE CAR JUST STOPPED BECAUSE THE WHEEL WAS JAMMED IN THE WHEEL WELL. I CAME TO FIND OUT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM/FORELINK HAD FAILED. IT CRACKED AND SEPARATED AT THE STEERING KNUCKLE. TESLA WAS OK ABOUT FIXING IT, THANK GOODNESS THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY OR IT WOULD HAVE COST THOUSANDS TO REPLACE BOTH SIDES FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NEVER FAIL. I COULDN’T LEAVE THE OTHER SIDE IN PLACE KNOWING THIS IS COMMON DEFECT AND THAT MY FAMILY’S SAFETY WAS IN JEOPARDY. THANKFULLY THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN WHILE DOING 65 MPH ON THE FREEWAY. TESLA BEGRUDGINGLY REPLACED BOTH SIDES UNDER THE WARRANTY. BUT, THEY DIDN’T REPAIR IT CORRECTLY. I’VE REPEATEDLY TOLD THEM THE TIRE RUBS AGAINST THE FRONT WHEEL WELL, AND IT DIDN’T BEFORE, BUT THEY SAID IT DOESN’T RUB. EVEN THOUGH, I HAVE PICTURES SHOWING THE TIRE AGAINST THE WHEEL WELL, WITH NO SPACE IN BETWEEN. I ALSO HAD TO ASK THEM TO PUT ALL THE RETAINING CLIPS IN PLACE REPEATEDLY, BUT THEY STILL LEFT AT LEAST 4 OUT. ALL THIS HAPPENED AT THE SERVICE CENTER IN BUENA PARK, CA. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TERRIBLE AND THERE IS NO WAY TO ESCALATE PROBLEMS BEYOND THE SERVICE ADVISOR YOU DEAL WITH. SO, BASICALLY I’M STUCK NOT REALLY KNOWING IF IT CONTINUES TO BE A SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE TESLA REFUSES TO COOPERATE AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE TO COMPLAIN TO. ONLY THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE HAD THE ISSUE, BUT THE ESTIMATE INCLUDES A REPLACEMENT OF THE PARTS FOR BOTH FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE. WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL, THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WOULD TILT UP AND DOWN. ALSO IN DRIVE AND REVERSE, THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WOULD HIT THE WHEEL WELL. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE VEHICLE WOULD MAKE SOUNDS AS WELL. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE IN AND THEY FOUND THAT THE UPPER CONTROL ARM HAD SNAPPED AND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD BEEN DAMAGED AS WELL. THEY SAID IT WAS A RESULT OF THE VEHICLE GOING OVER A SEVERE BUMP OR NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 38,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN OVER EXTREME CONDITIONS. WHEN LOOKING AT THE PART, IT LOOKS MORE LIKE A RESULT OF A MANUFACTURING DEFECT (STRESS FRACTURE) RATHER THAN NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. FORTUNATELY WE DID.M NOT EXPERIENCE COMPLETE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING, AS IT POTENTIALLY COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC.

I WAS DRIVING MY TESLA MODEL S IN THE LEFTMOST LANE OF THE NORTHBOUND FLORIDA TURNPIKE AROUND 8 PM. I WAS FOLLOWING THE TRAFFIC AND I BELIEVE MY SPEED WAS AROUND 70 MPH. I WAS IN FULL CONTROL AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN SELF-DRIVING MODE. SUDDENLY, AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE CAR STARTED SWERVING. I TRIED TO STEER IT, BUT THE CAR FAILED TO RESPOND TO MY INPUTS TO THE STEERING (THE STEERING WAS NOT LOCKED). WITHIN SECONDS, THE CAR CRASHED INTO THE MEDIAN, AND FROM THAT IMPACT, CUT ACROSS THE HIGHWAY AND CRASHED NEXT INTO THE GUARD RAILS AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, AND FROM THE IMPACT OF THAT CRASH, TURNED AROUND AND STOPPED IN THE RIGHTMOST / CENTER LANE. ON JANUARY 23, 2018 I HAD AN INCIDENT WITH MY TESLA WHERE I HIT A SMALL POTHOLE (11' WIDE BY 18' LONG AND 2' DEEP) AT A MODERATE SPEED OF ABOUT 40MPH. (I HAVE PICTURES OF THE ROAD THE POTHOLE IN QUESTION.) I LOST SOME CONTROL OF MY CAR SWERVING INTO THE ONCOMING LANE FROM THE IMPACT, BUT MANAGED TO PULL OVER ABOUT A COUPLE OF HUNDRED YARDS AFTER THAT WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT. I THOUGHT I HAD BLOWN A TIRE SINCE I HAVE LOW PROFILE TIRES ON THE LARGER RIMS ONLY TO FIND THE TIRE WAS STILL INFLATED. HOWEVER THE WHEEL WAS OFF CAMBER AND I NOTICED THAT IT HAD DAMAGED SOME OF THE WHEEL WELL ON FURTHER INSPECTION.I EVENTUALLY GOT EVERYTHING FIXED (ABOUT FOUR WEEKS LATER) AND THE BILL WAS $4200.00 WHICH I PAID. HOWEVER, AFTER MUCH THOUGHT AND CONSIDERATION, I BELIEVE THE CONTROL ARM IS OF A FAULTY DESIGN AND THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY TESLA. IN FACT, I HAVE A PICTURE OF THE CONTROL ARM WHILE IT WAS ON THE CAR AND I AM IN POSSESSION OF IT AND ALL THE DAMAGED PARTS. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT MY TESLA SHOULD HAVE SUFFERED SO MUCH DAMAGE FOR A RELATIVELY SMALL POTHOLE AND BELIEVE THE HEAVY LITHIUM BATTERY COUPLED WITH THE IMPROPERLY ENGINEERED CONTROL ARM CAUSED THE PROBLEM. I ALSO NOTE MINE IS NOT THE ONLY COMPLAINT OF THIS NATURE AS I HAVE SEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS IN ONLINE BLOGS AND FEEL THAT THIS MAY BE A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH TESLA'S CONTROL ARMS. THIS FAILURE HAS BEEN REPORTED ON MANY OTHER TESLAS. THE CAST ALUMINIUM STEERING KNUCKLE HAS FRACTURED WHICH IS INDICATIVE OF A CASTING FLAW. THE WHEEL HAS BEEN SLICED APART ALMOST CERTAINLY DUE TO CONTACT WITH A BROKEN SUSPENSION PART WHILST THE CAR WAS STILL DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THESE CARS ARE ARRIVING IN THE WRECKING YARDS IN HUGE NUMBERS CONSIDERING HOW RELATIVELY FEW TESLAS HAVE BEEN SOLD. YOU HAVE SEVERAL OTHER REPORTS OF THESE BOLTS SNAPPING WITHOUT ANY GOOD REASON. EXAMPLE: NHTSA ID NUMBER: 11074328 SNIP**THE LEFT FRONT FORE LINK BALL JOINT SNAPPED LIKE GLASS DURING NORMAL DRIVING. LUCKILY I WAS GOING AT RELATIVELY LOW SPEED ON A SIDE STREET. THIS ALLOWED THE SUSPENSION TO ALLOW THE WHEEL TO SLAM INTO THE FIREWALL AND IT LOCKED UP CAUSING THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO HIT A CURB. AS AN ENGINEER THIS SCARES THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ME, AS IF IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ON A HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY TURN, THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY. EVEN WITHOUT AN UNDERSTANDING OF ADVANCED METALLURGY, IT'S CLEAR THAT A HARDENED STEEL BALL JOINT SHOULD BE STRONGER THEN THE SURROUNDING ALUMINUM ALLOY PARTS ON EITHER SIDE THAT IT ATTACHES TO. IT LOOKS LIKE A GLASS ROD HIT WITH A HAMMER. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED TO ANOTHER 2014 IN OUR FAMILY ABOUT A YEAR AGO, AND I CHALKED IT UP TO RANDOM FAILURE. BUT NOW 2 FAILURES? THE TREAD ON BOTH FRONT TIRES IS BADLY WORN DOWN ACROSS THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE TREAD. IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT THIS WEAR WAS CAUSED FROM NORMAL DRIVING AS THE CAR IS NOT VERY OLD. IT IS ALSO UNLIKELY THAT THE WEAR WAS CAUSED DURING THE MOTION OF THE CAR DURING THE ROLLOVER EVENT. THE TIRES WOULD HAVE HAD TO ROTATE HUNDREDS OF TIMES TO WEAR AWAY THE TREAD. IT IS MOST LIKELY THAT THE SUSPENSION COLLAPSED WHILST DRIVING CAUSING THE TIRES TO RUB AGAINST THE WHEEL WELLS.
