While driving on the freeway in the fast lane at 75 MPH I80W, the car began a loud humming sound that came from the rear. My passenger and I noted that it was significant sound that we took a video to record the sound. I was the driver and I noticed that the sound increased as I accelerated. Then without any warning the car began to decelerate and no longer accelerated. The car slowed considerably to 35 MPH and it became a major safety issue because I had to cross all lanes of traffic at this slow speed. It was only after the car had completely shut down that the warning messages began to display. I reached the side of the road and we waited for the tow truck driver for about an hour. Subsequently, the car was towed to a Tesla dealer near my home. I was informed that the drive unit needed to be replaced with an explanation of internal failure, costing over $7000. However, the root cause of the internal failure was never explained or investigated even at my request stating that they do not take apart the drive unit. This incident occurred after driving 7hrs of heavy rainfall for 2 days. A quick google search of "2016 Tesla model S drive unit failure" reveals plenty of Tesla owners that had similar issues.

The center touchscreen in my Tesla Model S developed a yellow discoloration and later began leaking a sticky fluid from the edges of the display. This fluid appears to be seeping from inside the screen and emits a noticeable odor. The touchscreen is the primary interface for controlling most of the vehicle’s safety-critical systems, including the backup camera, gear selection, climate control, lights, and driver assistance settings. The leak causes visible streaking and distortion on the display. This directly impacts the rearview camera feed — making it harder to see obstacles or pedestrians when reversing — which is a federally mandated safety feature under FMVSS 111. The problem worsens in hot weather and may result in fluid dripping onto electronics below, creating an electrical hazard or sudden display failure while driving. This appears to be a known design flaw in which the adhesive or seal inside the display fails over time. The issue can impair visibility of safety alerts, rearview camera images, and vehicle status, posing a significant safety risk to occupants and others.

THE CENTER TOUCHSCREEN IS LEAKING A STICKY GLUE-LIKE SUBSTANCE AND HAS VISIBLE BUBBLES FORMING INSIDE THE SCREEN. THIS AFFECTS VISIBILITY AND OPERATION OF ESSENTIAL VEHICLE FUNCTIONS LIKE HVAC, NAVIGATION, AND DEFROST CONTROLS. THIS ISSUE IS WORSEN WITH HEAT EXPOSURE. THE SCREEN ALSO FREEZES RANDOMLY.

While the car is parked and locked the rear driver side door opens in its own. The door handle does not present itself and is scheduled for repair. This is new and started happening today. Despite how many times I close it. It opens on it own. The door is locked when this happens. Door sitting still. Plugged in to charge and locked. The door opens on its own. It unlatches, Does not fully open.

on 5/20/25, I had my Tesla repaired as I had suspension issues. They repaired my car to rectify my suspension for both my front and rear tires. Then on 6/12/25, I was driving on the highway and going about 70-75 mph when I heard a huge pop. No warning indicators came on and something did not feel right. I figured nothing else came of it. I was about 30 miles away from home and when I got home, my tire was pushed inward. I was concerned on whether this was related to a bad repair since it was so soon to my previous repair and they indicated that they did not touch that area. After they saw my video, they indicated that the lower control arm of my rear tire broke and they indicated that this was just a damaged component. My biggest concern is that if this issue was not related to the repair work done a month ago, this could be bigger issue as I could have been very concerning that this part broke when I was driving at high speeds and I think it's warranted to check on the quality of the component. In my 40 plus years of driving, I have never experienced this happened to me. If you need documentation or video of how the tire and the axle looks, I can forward it to you. The vehicle has only been inspected by the Tesla Dealership service center and as stated earlier, there weren't any warning signs or messages that showed as I specifically was looking for it when I heard the loud pop.

The infotainment unit in the car that controls functionality, I.e. navigation used to monitor battery availability is malfunctioning because of glue seeping from the unit and causing the screen to go black intermittently while driving creating a safety hazard for the driver and others due to a distraction. When this happens the driver loses visibility to navigation and other controls central to the vehicle functionality. Tesla is aware of this manufacturing defect that is a safety concern because it requires the driver to not focus on the road.

The passenger door handle and locking mechanism was not functioning properly. The front passenger door handle was not presenting. Also, every time I parked the car or unlocked the car, the door would pop open. Also, while in drive and when the car was in motion the passenger door would pop open unexpectedly. Safety is put at risk as the door would pop open while the car was in drive and in motion. The problem was reproduced several times and the Tesla service center acknowledged the problem and fixed it. They charged me $477. There were no warning signs.

The car drove itself away without being summoned. It was parked in a parking lot, it reversed itself and started driving and stopped at next stop sign. Someone alerted me thankfully and I went to retrieve the car from stop sign.

The main screen has been going black approximately every 2 minutes while I am driving. It flashes off and then back on. I lose my backup camera, and all access to other features such as defrost, which can be scary, not to mention distracting. This issue started in May 2023, and I brought the car in. An upgrade to the 64gb eMMc (originally was an 8gb chip) was performed in May. I believe Tesla was asked to, but would not, recall cars with this issue; they would only upgrade the chip. In August, 2023 we had issues again. They "reflashed" the unit and it was ok, but only for a couple of weeks. In addition to the recall, I have a warranty, but they will not replace the the computer unit without charging repairs to me. They tell me the hardware is outdated and the only true fix is to upgrade (at my cost - $2,000) to the "Infotainment" system. Since the upgrade to the 64mb chip has not worked, I believe they are required to do more, but they are telling me they will not, unless I pay. For some owners, I believe the upgrade was sufficient, but it has not been my experience. I have tried to reach someone above the service center manager, but it is impossible to get to a person. I have filled out contact forms on their website, with no response. I believe Tesla is putting my safety at risk because they will not perform what they know is the only true remedy.

The trunk on our Tesla has become locked shut and the emergency release will not work. This seems To have been caused by the software getting buggy from reversing as the trunk was closing. After this the trunk seems to be in an error state and wouldn’t register as closed. After opening it it the. Wouldn’t shut at all following multiple attempts via the key fob. Button. And touch screen. After closing manually it still did not register as shut and is now completely inoperable. Seemingly disabling multiple systems in autopilot and as mentioned can not even be opened via the manual emergency release

At low speeds, the rear control arm on the driver side disconnected from the wheel causing instability and a near accident. When looking into this issue, it appears it may be more common than what is published. This could have caused a serious accident if I were going highway speed.

I’ve been complaining about my mcu1 glitching, freezing and my rear view camera not working since June 2022. I also filing a complaint because I have the fsd package on my 2016 mcu1 car and that has not been delivered after a 6 year wait. They released fsd to the mcu1 platform. But less than 50 cars got it and that very software got recalled. They have fixed every other platform but mcu1 since. I truly believe there is a issue with mcu1 hw3. I’ve complained several times about my mcu under warranty about these issues and they said the only fix is mcu2 . Which means they couldn’t fix it under warrranty. That’s a breach of warranty. I almost hit a elderly gentleman a few weeks ago because I was backing up and my screen went black. This has been happening and tesla knows all about it. But Tesla says the only fix is the paid mcu2 upgrade for 2500 dollars. Tesla has been really deceptive and is trying to force it customers to their upgrade. This has been a ongoing issue with many loyal customers. Pretty much anyone that has a 2016-17 tesla s or x with mcu1. Losing basic functionality shouldn’t be a issue but here we are. Please look into this I’m sure you find several others just like me. Thanks for your help.

On Friday, June 2, 2023, I was traveling at highway speed in the left lane south on Interstate 15 just south of Temecula, California. With no warning my vehicle speed started dropping quickly, and did not respond to pressing the accelerator pedal. I immediately started moving lanes to the right, as my speed quickly decelerated to 30 mph. Luckily, I was able to make it to the shoulder safely. There was an exit up ahead, so I continued to drive as my speed continued to decelerate, in the hopes that I could make the exit and have a safe place in which to stop and contact Tesla service. I was able to make that exit, but by the time I got there my speed had decelerated to 20 mph, and as I continued up the exit to a wider shoulder, the car rolled to a stop and would not move again. The car battery had been fully charged before I left home, and the indicator showed over 180 miles of range available. I contacted Tesla, and followed their instructions to attempt to reboot the car, but was not able to. I then arranged for a tow to the Tesla Service Center in Temecula, where the car is now, and we are awaiting a diagnosis. A similar event happened to us in this vehicle in December of 2022; however, at that time the max speed of the car was able to be maintained at 60 mph, and we were able to make it to our destination safely (10-15 minutes of driving.) Once we arrived at that destination and stopped the car, the car would not restart, and it was towed to a Tesla service center in Burbank, CA where repairs were made. The car has functioned normally until yesterday. I feel this incident definitely put myself, and other drivers at risk. A car suddenly dropping speed to 30 mph on a freeway is very dangerous, and should I have been in a situation where I was not able to change lanes quickly and get off the road, a serious accident could have occurred. Tesla Model S touchscreen (MCU 1) continue to respond extremely slowly. Sometimes this means that the rear camera does not respond / turn on when the car is in reverse. Camera has been previously replaced under warranty. However, the issue remains. Have had several past appointments with various errors including black screen resets at random times and lack of responsiveness which impacts required safety features like the rear camera, but also convenience features such as climate control, radio, navigation, etc. Tesla continues to push for customers to pay for an upgrade to MCU 2. However, it seems that these safety features should work correctly in a consistent manner without the customer being required to pay.

The glue that was used on the screen of the Tesla has been leaking and the service center refused to pay for the repairs. The glue is now exposed into the car and outside of the screen and is toxic. I am now breathing toxic glue and its giving me and my family headaches when we are inside of the Tesla.

Sometimes with no cars in sight 3) braking from a high speed to 35 or 40 mph - would have definitely caused a crash if auto close behind me 3) all incidents have been reported to teslas with time date stamps and they have never gotten back to me and ignored all my warnings that this will cause an accident ( which I now see it has ) I can get a date and time on some if needed. There is fluid a fluid leak in the main large display and edges of driver display. The large display leak is obscuring driver view of display information. Driver side display is distracting and appears to move. Tesla verified that this problem exists in most of these vehicles, of this age, but it is not covered by warranty. Apparently, the fluid origin was from the breakdown of the adhesive used to attach glass. She could not assure me that the fluid would not leak out of glass screens or if the fluid was toxic to touch or inhalation. Despite the number of cars affected, there was never a recall, but many were fixed during another recall of a different display problem. The replacement of the screens will cost over $2000. Tesla was very much aware of this problem. There were many people affected and most were trusting Tesla’s replaced speech. Very sad.

Tesla notified me that my vehicle had been recalled due to a faulty eMMC in the media control unit. My vehicle is affected. I am having problems with the media control unit. I went to schedule service to get the replacement under the recall, and Tesla sent me a notice that my vehicle is not eligible for parts replacement unless the media control unit screen is completely blank. When this happens, it is an immediate safety issue. I do not believe Tesla is complying with the spirit of the recall. Parts should be replaced BEFORE a safety issue occurs. Tesla invited me to file a complaint if I feel that they are not complying with the NTHSA. So that is what I am doing.

"My safety concern is with the 17 inch screen. Originally in the information about the car before it was purchased, the manufacturer said that the screen would tilt left or right to give the drive better a better view and access to the touch screen. I have talked to service about this issue and they have said they do not plan to retrofit our cars with the motors to make the screen move. This is now working on the same car that is one year newer. We were promised this and I believe this issue with the screen not moving is a serious concern. You cannot see the screen as well or touch it as well because it does not tilt towards the driver. Please investigate this problem, it is dangerous."

To whom it may concern, On July 26, 2021, my Tesla was hijacked remotely and controls were overridden while I was on the highway (I almost crashed). This happened sometime between 11:30am and 4pm. I reported the issue to the NY State AG consumer affairs office. In December 2021, the car suddenly turned off and locked me out. It was then towed to another State and I’ve been unable to get it back in my possession. Regards, Gaetano

I have recently been made aware of pending requests and investigations re the Tesla autopilot system and ‘phantom braking.’ The issue is much broader than the 2020-2022 models. I experience this on an almost daily issue when I use the autopilot features with my FSD package. It has always been a common issue amongst all models of Tesla owners and discussed in group chats on Tesla owner forums (see eg., https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/phantom-braking-discussion.233400/) I have reported it to Tesla when I’ve gone in for other service and the response is always ‘yeah we are aware and working to fix it,’ or something to the effect acknowledging an issue they are investigating. I can’t give you a specific date but I didn’t record it- I just know it happens quite often, even on the highway with no car in front of me. The car does more than slow- it brakes hard and jarring. I learned there is no point telling Tesla when because they review the footage over the last few days before service and see no errors to fix despite knowing that it’s an issue. I hope you expand your recall and simply request that whatever is causing it, all modes and all years can be repaired. It’s too dangerous to use.

Tesla 17 inch touchscreen blacks out repeatedly and then cycles and turns back on. This is more common in hot environments after charging. Sometimes it happens more than 10 times in a short drive. Per a similar recall in newer 2021 vehicles this means the cars can lose rearview camera displays, settings that control windshield defrosters and indicators. I have had the eMMC replaced per the prior recall, but this issue continues to happen after multiple Tesla Service Center visits.

I took my car in for the tesla video card replacement voluntary recall. After the "repair," my display screen acts erratically and visually becomes distractive. So far the service centers are trying to UPSELL me a new system to replace the current "repaired" system for $1500. I have had no luck with them taking responsibility for this issue. The big screen flickers the navigation screen and also distorts the items on the screen. As of yet, they keep saying this is normal function/behavior and all I have been asking is to have the screen operate as it is intended. (which it was prior to the chip update). Also, I believe the issue is also affecting the audio in the car.....at times the sound has become distorted and think that sound is absent from the turn signals. I know the audio system must have been impacted by their "repair" because initially the system sounded twice as clear than before the chip upgrade.

The recent upgrade of the Tesla MCU UI (User Interface) firmware from V10 to V11 has significant User Experience problems creating a less safe vehicle. Standard pieces of automotive functionality have been moved off the main screen and into sub-menus. Two weeks ago, my car was forcefully or accidentally (may be my fault) updated to the V11 UI. To my dismay the window defrost button was moved from a single press on at the bottom of the touchscreen to multiple precise presses. I experienced how unsafe this is while driving in northern New Mexico on a snowy curvy mountain road after sunset departing Bandelier National Monument. The front windshield began fogging up as I reached 50 mph on the one lane 55mph speed limit road. Previously, a quick glance at the screen would be sufficient to make sure my finger was over the correct button. But now, the defroster button is hidden. I'm in the middle of a turn, my window is quickly fogging up, and I need the defroster ASAP. I didn't have time to take my eyes off the road for multiple seconds to make sure I was using the touchscreen correctly and wait for the slow UI animations to run. So, I did an unsafe, but least worst thing and stopped in the middle of the road. I enabled the defroster and continued the trip, but was shocked I needed to risk being rear ended to enable the defroster. These changes have not been thought through from a safety perspective. The goal seems to make the UI pretty, at the expense of safety. I could enable the defroster on previous vehicles without taking my eyes off the road at all, because they had physical buttons. The V10 defroster button location was simple to locate with a glance. The V11 defroster button requires multiple seconds and is now a significant safety hazard. I dislike the V11 firmware for many other reasons, but this is the most clear safety issue. Note: The defroster can be turned on via voice control, but it is not available in areas without mobile/cell service.

Sir/Madam, I own a Tesla Model S 2016 year car. I bought it in Nov 2018 from Tesla dealership. The car had free super charging and all warranty. In a parking lot entrance, someone rear ended my car and affected car back bumper and slight dent on quarter panel. The other car may not have traveled more than 5 miles as he was turning inside parking lot. The insurance company totaled my car saying Tesla won't provide parts quickly to repair. Since they can't wait, they totaled the car. Insurance company gave the car to us after deducting salvage value. Tesla didn't do body work in our area. So I took it to another shop and repaired the bumper and quarter panel. Due to pandemic we couldn't get rebuilt title quickly. Since my car was fully insured, insurance company said we can drive the car. While we were waiting for rebuilt title, I continue to use super charging and other work from Tesla. Once the salvage title entered into the DMV system, Tesla had access to it and since then, they removed all warranty and super charging. I am a realtor and use this car very much for my business. I explained to Tesla officers the need to have super charging, but they are saying once the car has rebuilt title, they will remove super charging capability. I told them I was using super charging it after my car was fixed, but they didn't care. I asked them if they can inspect the car for safety issue and they don't want to do it. Now my problem is I couldn't super charge even in other providers super charging location also. I provided all the details about the fix, rebuilt title etc. Even if they don't want to provide warranty, I certainly need super charging for free or by paying fee. I am wiling to do any safety check they want me to do. I am doing all other services in Tesla dealership only. I hope your department could intervene and help with situation.

Tesla has released new Firmware 11 software, Version 2021.44.25.2, for the Master Computer Screen which is what controls all the software controlled functions of the vehicle. During the update, which was not communicated in advance of the update, Tesla did a complete USER INTERFACE change & redesign. This materially changed how the vehicle functions from a usability standpoint and a safety standpoint. With the said User Interface update and change (Again, Complete redesign), Tesla changed locations of "buttons" to activate functions required for safety. One major change (Among too many to be able to list in a Safety Complaint) was Window Defroster/Defogger, to keep windows clear of fog & frost. Tesla has moved buttons and options which were directly accessible with a single touch and no menu changes, and has moved said changes into sub-menu's. Doing this now requires the driver to take their eyes off the road, and at least one hand off the wheel for an extended length of time to navigate sub-menu's to find the placement of the button to activate defrosters. Instead of a fraction of a second glance to hit the button, now requires 2-5 seconds of looking to find it. Same goes for heat/ac controls. Further, the redesign materially changes the functionality of the vehicles menus, and completely changes the functionality of every and all options under the menu's. Again, Tesla did this with no prior notification that such a change would be taking place. Further, Tesla service will not reverse the software changes. Tesla, with this update, has focused more on a stupid "Holiday Light Show", and providing more games to the driver. I do not want a stupid light show or games. I want my vehicle to operate how it was advertised in a usability manor that does not decrease safety.

I backed my tesla out of my driveway on 12/17. I could see as I backed into the street another car at the stop sign waiting to turn left. I was blocking part of the road so as the car was in reverse moving back, I put my tesla in "D". I clearly saw the D. I stepped on accelerator seeing they were patiently waiting and I wanted to get out of their way. As I touched gas I was in shock-I kept going in reverse! The car dash said "D" and in my shock i pressed down on the gas more. I ended up accelerating more in reverse and smashed right into a parked car on the street! I knew I was swerving back and steered into the middle of the street I thought. I never heard the warning sign on my car because it was in D. I didnt see the car in my rearview mirror and in the shock of the speed and my correct into the middle of the road, I dented my neighbors front left bumper only. Thankfully I didn't damage their lights. It only did a small scrape in the front right rear side of my model S. I did replicate the problem one more time on camera about 15 minutes later. But I was in such shock the camera drops below the road so it has my voice on it and I didn't want to hit someone else again. This is very dangerous to accelerate backwards when the dash says "D". I've taken the tesla in many times for the screens freezing. They say its memory issues and want me to pay 2500 to upgrade the internal parts. This puts my kids and anyone at risk if they're behind me when Im shifting to drive and drive off. There again were no warnings before the crash because the car was in D.

IN HOT WEATHER MY DASHBOARD DISPLAY SHOWS SIGNS OF MELTING AND THEN FAILS TO DISPLAY ANY INFORMATIONSUCH AS SPEED, MILEAGE CAPACITY, ETC. WHEN THE WEATHER IS COOL THIS DOES NOT AHPPEN.

NHTSA has asked Tesla to recall faulty EMMC base boards, but even after repeated service requests with proof of of center console going completely blank while driving, backup camera failure from time to time, voice commands unusable and now maps going completely blank, Tesla refuses to change the board and says their system does not show signs of wear and due to limited parts availability they won't perform replacement. They have been updating firmware to delete processes to slow down 'wear' as per their definition so that they can get around NHTSA direction.

The car sped up automatically after slowing down (when the accelerating padel was release) due to the coming red light, I tried to apply brakes but it did not work, i immediately put the car in parking which stopped the car, I got the error similar to "Could not activate the emergency brake and move the car to the side" I was lucky that there was no one in the front of my car when i happened otherwise it could have resulted into an accident I was able to drive the car after 10 minutes.

I was stopped at a red light, left signal on, when the car suddenly accelerated forward through the intersection in an aggressive 0-60 kind of start. I braked safely and was about to execute a U-turn a minute or two later when the car bolted forward again. There was no traffic other than the car behind me at the light, thankfully. There were no warnings or other signals and the car was not operating in AutoPilot. I reported the incident immediately to Tesla and the car is now out of state in their custody while an escalated investigation is conducted. They have, however, told us that the car is safe to drive and that it is not possible for this to have occurred. They also assert that all sudden acceleration cases to date have been related to AutoPilot and all have been driver error.

My Vehicle is part of the eMMC Media Chip Recall. I have tried repeatedly in past 6 months to have Tesla repair my vehicle, which continues to suffer screen blackouts daily during operation. These blackouts render my backup camera blank, creating a major safety concern. Each time I schedule an appointment, Tesla will cancel and tell me they do not have the part. They are not complying with the NHTSA recall. I cannot in good faith believe their excuse that part is unavailable given the massive volume of cars they are producing quarterly.

Car's central console locks up or goes blank while driving. This creates a driving hazard as drive must take his eyes off the road and try to restart the console. Tesla sent out a notice by mail in March that a recall was issued and that Tesla would replace the defective parts. Tesla sent a secondary notice in April. They will not take calls concerning this issue and have not provided an estimated repair date. No communication on this recall has been made by Tesla for 90 days.

This model's Main Computer Unit (MCU) is malfunctioning by spontaneously rebooting thereby disabling major functions of the vehicle including the rear camera that is enabled when driving the car in reverse. This is a safety hazard since rear visibility is completely disabled during the reboot of the system. As the NHTSA is likely aware, this problem has been previously reported and Tesla has previously issued a voluntary recall for this problem. It resolves the problem by installing a larger memory chip (a daughterboard) on the main board to prevent these functions from being disabled. My vehicle was included in this voluntary recall and was expedited to receive the recall after I reported this problem (the problem I reported is apparently different from the one that was the main impetus of the recall). However, the installation of the upgraded memory chip DID NOT resolve the problem that I have been experiencing and the safety hazard persists. I was told at the time of the voluntary recall service appointment that this installation would likely solve the problem that I was experiencing but it has not done so. I have reported these results to Tesla and they claim that they are working on a software update to eliminate the problem but they have not provided any timing for the availability of this software update and I continue to experience the effects of the problem on a regular basis. The dealer is aware of the problem and the vehicle was inspected in connection with the voluntary recall. No warming messages are provided in connection with this problem. The MCU also known as the touchscreen in the Tesla simply unexpectedly reboots until the the functions are restored, a process that takes several minutes to occur.

The multi-media screen when blank and would not reboot in Dec. 2020. It had gone blank before many times over the years (more than I think most cars) but always I was able to reboot the car/computer. I had complained a couple of times at the service center going back a few years and got advice to reboot. Lately it had been happening quite frequently. This time it would not work. I called Tesla and the rep asked if the turn signals worked and I confirmed that they did not. He indicated that this was a safety issue and I should not drive the car and schedule a repair asap. Meanwhile, I had already received a notice in the mail of a volunary repair that Telsa would do if the screen went out and woudl not rebooot. I was able to get an earlier appointment than the 2 week one that was offered by going into the Tesla service center (as they had advised I could try to do). I was later told that they would not voluntarily repair this for me and I would have to pay. It took them a number of days to get back to me on this. Tesla service center rep and manager indicated that even though the end result of my issue was the same -- no screen, no rear back up camera, no turn signals, no defrost presumably -- my issue was caused by a defective audio chip for the display and not the defective multi-media chip. I had the same safety issues but they required that I pay out of pocket fo the repair. They explained that Tesla had figure out a less expensive way to swap out the mulit media chip but for the audio chip it required a full replacement of the panel or something and that cost them more. I asked about who can i escalate this to and was told I woudl hae to write the legal department. I wrote the legal department on March 12, 2021 to request a refund. They have still not written me back or even acknowledged my letter. Since I wrote my letter to Tesla, my undestanding is that NHTSA has required Tesla to issue a recall to repair a blank screen chip issue.

THE VANITY MIRRORS CAN EASILY FELL OFF FROM THE SUN VISORS. I GOT THIS PROBLEM, AND FOUND THE HEAVY MIRROR IS GLUED BY WHITE DOUBLE SIDED ADHESIVE TAPE WHICH WILL LOSS ADHESION AT HIGH TEMPERATURES. THEN THE MIRROR FELL BECAUSE OF GRAVITY. ALTHOUGH, THERE IS A PLASTIC MIRROR COVER, THE COVER HAS VERY FRAGILE THIN SPIN AXLES. I DID NOT WITNESS THE WHOLE PROCESS, BUT SINCE I DO NOT USE THAT MIRROR SO THE MIRROR COVER SHOULD NOT BE DAMAGED BEFORE THIS HAPPED. SO I GUESS THAT IN MY CASE THE FALLEN MIRROR SMASHED THE COVER, AND THE COVER AXLES ARE BROKEN AND SO THE COVER GOT OPENED AUTOMATICALLY AND LET THE MIRROR CAME OUT. THERE ARE AIRBAGS BEHIND THE SUN VISORS, SO THE FALLING MIRRORS AND COVERS ARE NOT ONLY A RISK FACTOR FOR DAILY DRIVING BUT ALSO MAY CAUSE SEVERE INJURY WHEN THE AIRBAGS ARE ACTIVATED. I DO NOT USE THAT MIRROR, I ONLY USE THE SUN VISORS, SO THIS IS DEFINITELY A CAR DEFECT. THE FALLEN MIRROR IS NOT SHOWED IN MY PICTURES. WHEN I FOUND THE PROBLEM, THE COVER WAS NOT COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE SUN VISOR, SINCE I CANNOT CLOSE IT ANYMORE AND IT SEEMS LIKE WILL FALLING SOON, SO I PULLED IT OFF.

MY CAR MCU SCREEN HAS HAD PROBLEMS SINCE JUNE 2020 WITH BEING BLANK THAT WOULD NOT RECOVER WITH REBOOTING OR HARD RESET. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TESLA SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES DURING MY WARRANTY PERIOD. UNFORTUNATELY, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED AND I TOOK THE CAR IN AGAIN IN DECEMBER 2020 WHEN MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND TESLA CHARGED ME $200 TO REPLACE THE MCU/EMMC. I CONTINUED TO HAVE THE PROBLEM AFTER THE REPAIR. THE LAST TIME WAS ON 1/7/21. TESLA CLAIMED THAT MY PROBLEM IS NOT RELATED TO THE EMMC PROBLEM AND I AM NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE REFUND. EVEN THOUGH THEIR REPAIR WAS REPLACING THE MCU AND THE EMMC WITH A 64 GB CARD WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE REPAIR FOR THE ISSUE BEING RECALLED. WHEN MY MCU SCREEN WAS BLANK, I COULD NOT LOCK THE CAR DOORS, USE THE AC, START THE CAR, OR USE ANY FUNCTIONS ON THE SCREEN.

MY CENTER CONSOLE AND MCU CONTINUES TO LOCK UP AND RESET. I HAVE ALERTED TESLA SERVICE CENTER MANY TIMES TO THIS ISSUE AND THEY TELL ME I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE UPGRADE OF THE MCU. THEY ACTUALLY KNOW THEY HAVE A PROBLEM AND TELLING ME THAT MY CAR DOES NOT FALL IN THAT CATEGORY FOR A RECALL. I REALLY THINK THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO CULL OUT THE FOLKS THAT ARE NOT PERSISTENT, AND FOR SOME REASON THEY STATE THAT I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM. THE 2016 TESLA MODEL S MCU HAD BEEN SLUGGISH AND OFTEN TIMES FREEZES. THIS IS POTENTIALLY A RISK FOR DRIVING AS I CANNOT ACCESS OR SEE ANYTHING ON THE SCREEN. LOTS OF TIMES THE FRONT SCREEN AND THE MCU SCREEN TURNS OFF. I CALLED TESLA AND THEY DELETED THE ENTIRE HISTORY CACHING, BUT THAT WORKED FOR A BIT, BUT THEN WAS SLOW AND SLUGGISH. THE MCU WILL GO OUT A WEEK LATER. OFTEN TIMES, I WOULD GET IN THE CAR AND THE CAR WILL NOT BOOT UP FOR A COUPLE MINUTES. TRYING TO CHANGE SETTINGS ON THE MCU WOULD BE AN SLOW PROCESS. SOMETIMES THERE WERE GLITCHES WHERE YOU CANNOT SEE ANYTHING ON THE SCREENS LIKE THE SPEEDOMETER WHICH MAKES DRIVING DANGEROUS. MY CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND I PURCHASED THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THEY WOULDN'T CHANGE THE MCU. I ENDED UP PAYING $2700 OUT OF POCKET TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE MCU. THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPEN ON LESS THAN A 4 YEAR OLD CAR WHEN I DID THIS. EVEN WITH TESLA EXTENDED WARRANTY, THE MCU WAS NOT COVERED.

MAIN ONBOARD COMPUTER CONSISTENTLY FREEZING AND CRASHING. REGULARLY MUST POWER CYCLE THE VEHICLE TO GET MAIN SCREEN TO BOOT. MAPS, NAVIGATION AND ALL CONTROL FUNCTIONS ACCESSIBLE VIA THE CENTER SCREEN ARE INACCESSIBLE WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE. BACK UP CAMERA, DEFROSTERS AND OTHER FUNCTIONS ALSO BECOME DISABLED WHEN THE SCREEN FREEZES. TESLA TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE REQUIRED A REPLACEMENT MCU AND ORDERED THE PART. HOWEVER, AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE ISSUE. INSTEAD THEY CLEARED THE DATA CACHE, TURNED OFF MY POWER SAVER MODE FUNCTION(THAT WAS NOT ACTIVE BUT WAS ENABLED) AND TOLD ME TO RESET THE CAR OR BRING IT BACK IN IF IT PERSISTS. THEY WERE UNWILLING TO DIAGNOSE FURTHER. I HAVE MAJOR SAFETY CONCERNS OPERATING A VEHICLE THAT RELIES ON ITS TECHNOLOGY TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. I'D LIKE THIS INVESTIGATED MORE CLOSELY. RYAN SMITH, THE SERVICE MANAGER AT TESLA REFUSED TO SHARE THE DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS, AND SAID THAT IF THE PART (MCU OR ITS COMPONENTS) FAILS THEY WILL REPLACE IT, BUT THAT IT HASN'T FAILED. THE ONLY MANUAL FOR OPERATION OF MY CAR IS ON SCREEN. THE CAR COMPUTER WILL NOT LOAD THE SCREEN FOR THE MANUAL SO WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO ACCESS ANY SAFETY OR OPERATION MANUALS FOR MONTHS. I AGAIN TOOK MY CAR TO TESLA SERVICE THIS WEEK AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THEY HAVE NO FIX. THERE IS NO OTHER OPERATION MANUAL AND TO WAIT FOR A FIRMWARE UPDATE THEY MAY HELP BUT THEY ARE NOT SURE. THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE THE MCU. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER FULL WARRANTY. WE SUSPECT THE ISSUES WITH LOADING THE MANUAL IS RELATED TO FAILURE OF THE TOUCHSCREEN/MCU. WE HAVE HAD INCREASING EPISODES OF OUR SCREEN GOING DARK REQUIRING US TO PULL OVER AND NOT DRIVE UNTIL COMPUTER REBOOTS. WE ARE UNABLE TO USE OUR BACK UP CAMERA WHEN THE SCREEN IS BLACK. I HAVE HAD THE SCREEN GO BLACK ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. IT TAKES MULTIPLE TRIES TO REBOOT IT. THE LOCAL DEALER SAID THAT I HAD TO KEEP TRACK OF WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND REPORT IT WITHIN 30 MINUTES TO THEM FOR DIAGNOSIS. I WAS HAVING THE SCREEN REPLACED FOR A DIFFERENT ISSUE (BUBBLES IN THE SCREEN) AND ASKED THEM IF THEY WOULD REPLACE IT WITH A NEWER SCREEN AND REPLACE THE MCU UNIT. THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD ONLY REPLACE THE SCREEN WITH A REFURBISHED UNIT THAT IS THE SAME AS THE ONE I HAVE. I HAD ANOTHER FAILURE YESTERDAY (11/30/2020) WHEN I WAS OUT OF TOWN. THE CAR WAS PARKED AND THE SCREEN WOULD NOT ENGAGE. I TRIED REBOOTING SEVERAL TIMES OVER AROUND 20 MINUTES. THE SYSTEM FINALLY REBOOTED. I SENT THIS IN TO THE LOCAL DEALER WITHIN 15 MINUTES. THEY HAD SAID THAT I NEEDED TO REPORT FAILURES WITHIN 30 MINUTES FROM THE OCCURRENCE . THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE OVER 12,000 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. WHEN THE SCREEN IS BLACK AND INOPERABLE THE BACKUP CAMERA IS NOT ENGAGED. YOU SHOULD REQUIRE THAT TESLA ISSUE RECALLS FOR MCU REPLACEMENTS AND SCREEN REPLACEMENTS WITH THE NEWER UPGRADED MODEL.

THE CAR HAS HAD 25 OVER THE AIR FIRMWARE UPDATES AND HAS UNDERGONE TWO SEPARATE COMPLETE FACTORY RESETS SINCE MY INITIAL COMPLAINT TO TESLA IN JULY 2019. SYMPTOMS PREVENT AUDIO FOR TURN SIGNALS AND AUTOPILOT FROM WORKING PROPERLY. PREVENT BACKUP CAMERA FROM OPENING OR DISPLAYING PROPERLY. MAKE USING THE BUILT IN NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS DIFFICULT AND OFTEN DANGEROUS, CAUSING DRIVER DISTRACTION. WHEN THE MCU REBOOTS WHILE DRIVING IT TAKES NEARLY 15 MINUTES FOR THE NAV SYSTEM TO RESTART. MY TEGRA BASED MCU'S EMMC SHOWS ROUGHLY 2400 / 3000 AVG BLOCK ERASES, AND 81 RESERVED BLOCKS, NOT MEETING THE NEW THRESHOLDS SET BY TESLA ENGINEERING FOR REPLACEMENT (WHICH, FOR MY H8G2D APPRENTLY REQUIRE LESS THAN 65 RESVERED BLOCKS REMAINING). THE SYSTEM HAS REGULARLY SHOWN SQUASHFS ERRORS DUE TO CORRUPTED MEMORY.

THE MCU (MASTER CONTROL UNIT) IS THE 17" TOUCH SCREEN DISPLAY THAT CONTROLS MOST OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN PLAGUED OVER IT'S LIVE WITH FREEZE UP'S AND REBOOTS. APRIL 2019, SCREEN LOCKED UP AND WOULD NOT RESTART, WHICH CAUSED VEHICLE TO LOOSE PROPULTION, POWER ASSISTED BRAKES, POWER STEERING, WINDOW CONTROLS (HAD TO USE EMERGENCY MANUAL RELEASE TO EXIT VEHICLE, THEN GO BACK IN AND SQUEEZE BETWEEN THE SEATS TO GET MY DISABLED SON OUT OF THE BACK AS THE BACK DOOR HANDLES DID NOT OPERATE EITHER AND HAD TO TRY AND FIND THE WELL HIDDEN MANUAL RELEASE HIDDEN UNDER THE CARPET WITH NO MARKINGS TO GET THE REAR DOOR OPEN AND HIM OUT OF HIS CAR SEAT). VEHICLE ALSO WOULD NOT GO IN TO PARK, I HAD TO USE MY SHOES (WITH STEEL TOE) UNDER THE WHEELS TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM ROLLING DOWN AN INCLINE. THIS ALSO PREVENTED THE HOOD FROM BEING OPENED TO POTENTIALLY PULL THE POWER TO THE VEHICLE TO FORCE A RESET AS THE RESET BUTTONS DID NOT WORK. ALSO TRUNK WOULD NOT OPEN AND HAD TO CLIMB THROUGH THE INSIDE TO GET TO THE MANUAL RELEASE FOR THE TRUNK TO GET DIAPERS FOR MY DISABLED SON WHILE WE WAITED 4 HOURS FOR A TOW. ONCE DOORS WERE SHUT, NO WAY TO GET BACK IN. HEAD LIGHTS ALSO WOULD NOT TURN OFF. HAD IT TOWED TO TESLA SERVICE OF HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS FROM MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WISCONSIN. THEY SAID THE HEADLIGHTS STAYED ON ALL NIGHT, AND THAT THE CAR "FIXED" ITSELF THE OVERNIGHT SOME HOW. NO ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WOULD BE PROVIDED. THAT WAS THE WORST FAILURE, HOWEVER, IT STILL LOCKS UP AND REBOOTS AT RANDOM TIMES AS IT'S IN USE. EITHER WHILE DRIVING (WHEN THAT HAPPENS I LOOSE TURN SIGNALS AND OTHER SAFETY FEATURES AS WELL AS ABILITY TO CONTROL VEHICLE SETTINGS) OR WHILE PARKED PREVENTING IT FROM BEING DRIVEN.

I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR INTO THE A TESLA SERVICE CENTER TO HAVE THE ISSUE REPAIRED. THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS AND KEEP DELAYING THE REPAIR. THE DEFECTIVE MCU IS A KNOW ISSUE, I AM SURPRISED TESLA WILL NOT REPLACE THE UNIT WITH A NON DEFECTIVE UNIT AND WILL ONLY REPLACE IT WITH REFURBISHED PARTS. ALSO, FOR A KNOW DEFECT THAT AFFECTS THE SAFETY OF THE CAR, WHY WONT TESLA KEEP AN AMPLE STOCKPILE OF BOARDS TO REPAIR THE ISSUE. ALL THEY ARE DOING IS PUSHING THE ISSUE FURTHER DOWN THE LINK WITHOUT ANY INTENTION TO PROPERLY FIX THE DEFECTIVE MCU.

WEB BROWSER AND SCREEN RENDERING WERE INCREASINGLY DELAYED. ALL HAPPENED THE DAY AFTER FULL SELF DRIVE UPGRADE WAS INSTALLED ON 6/26/2020 WITH 30K MILES. THE EMMC FLASH MEMORY IS FAILING, LEADING TO THE MAIN SCREEN BLACKING OUT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BOTH WHILE DRIVING AND WHEN AT STOP AND WHEN THE CAR IS BOOTING UP. THIS PREVENTS ADJUSTMENT OF SEVERAL COMPONENTS INCLUDING CLIMATE (FANS, DEFOG, AC), MANUAL LIGHTING, CRUISE CONTROL/AUTOPILOT, ETC. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR OVER A MONTH, PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE. TESLA IS TELLING US WE HAVE TO REPLACE THE FLASH MEMORY (~$500, BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THE PROBLEM WON'T REOCCUR), OR REPLACE OR UPGRADE THE MCU (~$1500-2500). THE CAR WAS RECENTLY UPGRADED TO FULL SELF DRIVE HARDWARE (PAID FOR IN 2016) AND OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THAT THIS CONTRIBUTES TO THE MEMORY DYING, SO WE CONTEND THIS DESIGN FLAW SHOULD BE REPAIRED BY TESLA FOR FREE.

I FREQUENTLY NEED TO FOLLOW A REBOOT PROCESS ON VEHICLE START IN ORDER TO DRIVE. THE DELAY IN OR NEED TO REBOOT PRIOR TO VEHICLE STARTUP HAS BEEN OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY IN RECENT MONTHS. I'VE ALSO EXPERIENCED GARBLED DISPLAY GRAPHICS WHILE DRIVING, REQUIRING THE NEED TO REBOOT (ONE OR MORE TIMES) TO OPERATE VEHICLE FUNCTION. I WAS DRIVING 1MI UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT OF 35MPH. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS AROUND FREEZING, AND A WET SNOW HAD BEGUN 5-10MIN EARLIER, WITH MINIMAL ACCUMULATION. I KNOW EXACTLY HOW FAST I WAS GOING BECAUSE I HAD CRUISE CONTROL ON. I WAS NOT ON AUTOPILOT. JUST CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN THE INTERSECTION AND STOP LIGHT CAME INTO VIEW, I TAPPED THE BREAK TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL, AND THEN DEPRESSED THE BREAK TO SLOW THE CAR. NOTHING HAPPENED. THE BREAKS WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE CAR USED TO CHARGE BETWEEN 107 TO 110 KW PER HOUR AND NOW TOPS IS 60S AND 70S. I UNDERSTAND NORMAL BATTERY DEGRADATION BUT THIS IS NOT IT. I CALLED TESLA YESTERDAY 11 /26 /2019, TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. THE SERVICE REP MENTIONED THAT THE LAST UPDATES MAY HAVE ROLLED OUT FIXES FOR BATTERY LONGEVITY AND HEALTH. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE IN AUTOPILOT MODE GOING 50MPH SOUTHBOUND IN THE LEFT LANE ON A DIVIDED 2 LANE HIGHWAY, ROUTE 1 IN DELAWARE. IT WAS CLEAR AND SUNNY, NO FOG. ALL THESE CONDITIONS ARE PREFERRED WHEN USING AUTOPILOT ON MY VEHICLE. A WHITE FORD F150 PERPENDICULAR TO MY CAR WAS BETWEEN THE MEDIAN IN A TURNABOUT TO GO NORTHBOUND WITH ITS TRUCKBED ABOUT 1 FOOT INTO MY LANE. AUTOPILOT DID NOT ALERT ME TO THIS CAR, NOR DID IT SLOW DOWN OR VEER IN ORDER TO AVOID IT (TWO FEATURES ENABLED ON MY VEHICLE AND ADVERTISED BY TESLA). I WAS UNABLE TO GRAB THE WHEEL IN TIME TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT. I FEEL THAT THE AUTOPILOT'S FEATURE OF WORKING WITHOUT THE HANDS ON THE WHEEL LULLED ME INTO A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY AND I MOST CERTAINLY WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS TYPE OF ACCIDENT HAD I NOT HAD AUTOPILOT ON MY VEHICLE. I AM SO THANKFUL I WASN'T KILLED OR INJURED, I FEEL THAT THE WAY AUTOPILOT IS HANDLED IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD REQUIRE HANDS TO BE ON THE WHEEL AT ALL TIMES. I HAD NEARLY COMPLETED THE PARKING MANEUVER WHEN THE CAR RACED FORWARD, JUMPED A CURB, KNOCKED DOWN A HANDICAPPED PARKING SIGN, TRAVELED ACROSS A WALKWAY AND SMASHED INTO THE FRONT OF THE BUSINESS. THIS HAPPENED SO FAST, I DIDNT REALIZE WHAT OCCURRED UNTIL I COULD GATHER MY THOUGHTS AFTER THE INCIDENT. NO AUDIBLE OR VISUAL WARNING OF AN IMPENDING COLLISION WERE HEARD OR SEEN. NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. FORTUNATELY NO ONE INSIDE THE BUSINESS, NO PEDESTRIAN NOR MYSELF WERE INJURED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A TRAJIC ACCIDENT. THIS IS ANOTHER COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TESLA AUTOPILOT. HERE IS A VIDEO OF AN OWNER USING AUTOPILOT HANDS FREE AT HIGH SPEED ON A FREEWAY AND INCHES AWAY FROM MANY ONCOMING CARS ON AN UNDIVIDED ROAD. HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=PIQYOOP5PYC RATHER THAN KEEPING HER HANDS ON THE WHEEL SHE INSTEAD GIVES THE WHEEL A REGULAR TWEAK EVERY ABOUT ONCE A MINUTE BUT THE REMAINDER OF THE TIME HER HANDS ARE NOWHERE NEAR THE WHEEL. THIS IS JUST ONE OF MANY VIDEOS SHOWING OWNERS DRIVING IN DANGEROUS WAYS. I BELIEVE THAT THESE OWNERS HAVE BEEN DUPED INTO HAVING MISPLACED CONFIDENCE IN THE AUTOPILOT AND THAT THE SITUATION HAS BEEN MADE WORSE BY TESLA USING NHTSA APPARENT ENDORSEMENT OF THE AUTOPILOT. NHTSA HAS STATED THAT TESLA AUTOPILOT IS 40% SAFER THAN A HUMAN DRIVER BASED ON THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS WHICH RESULTED IN AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT ACCORDING TO DATA SUPPLIED BY TESLA. THE PUBLICATION OF THIS FINDING HAS CAUSED OWNERS TO HAVE HIGH CONFIDENCE IN THE AUTOPILOT. MIGHT I POLITELY ASK - WHAT IS THE SAMPLE SIZE? IF THE SAMPLE SIZE WAS FOR EXAMPLE 100 AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENTS THEN THAT IS A RATHER LARGE NUMBER OF CRASHES IN PROPORTION TO THE NUMBER OF CARS ON THE ROAD. IT IS ALSO FAR TOO LOW A SAMPLE TO PROVIDE STATISTICALLY RELIABLE RESULTS. WHENEVER A CRASH OCCURS TESLA CLAIMS THAT THE AUTOPILOT WAS NOT ENGAGED AT THE TIME. THIS IS PROBABLY TRUE BECAUSE THE AUTOPILOT WILL DISENGAGE IF THE OWNER TOUCHES THE WHEEL OR THE BRAKE IN THE INSTANT BEFORE IMPACT. AT 3:20 IN THE VIDEO YOU CAN SEE THE OWNER GRAB THE WHEEL AFTER THE AUTOPILOT CROSSES DOUBLE LINES. PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT FURTHER LOSS OF LIFE.

REPEATED CLAIMS THAT AUTOPILOT IS 40% SAFER THAN A HUMAN DRIVER MAKE MATTERS EVEN WORSE. WHEN A CRASH DOES OCCUR TESLA WILL CLAIM THAT THE CAR WAS NOT ON AUTOPILOT. THIS IS TECHNICALLY CORRECT SINCE THE AUTOPILOT WILL DISCONNECT MOMENTS BEFORE IMPACT IF THE BRAKE OR STEERING WHEEL IS TOUCHED. PLEASE HALT THIS RECKLESS EXPERIMENT.

TESLA HAS RELEASED A VERSION OF ITS "ENHANCED AUTO PILOT" THAT IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE FOR PUBLIC USE. IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN TESTED. (1) ON LOCAL ROADS, AT LOW SPEED, IT'S AUTO STEERING FUNCTION WILL OFTEN DRIVE ACROSS A DOUBLE YELLOW LINE WITH NO WARNING. EVEN A SMALL TURN WILL CAUSE THIS. (2) ITS TACC (TRAFFIC AWARE CRUISE CONTROL) CAN NOT CONSISTENTLY SEE BUSES DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF IT. THE BUSES ARE MOVING IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS THE TESLA AND NOT STOPPED. TESLA'S LATEST RELEASE SEE NOTHING IN FRONT AND WILL RE-END THE BUS IF NO ACTION IS TAKEN. THIS IS ANOTHER COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TESLA AUTOPILOT. FORUM MEMBERS HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING HOW EASY IT IS TO DEFEAT THE AUTOPILOT "NAGS" BY HANGING A WEIGHT ON THE STEERING WHEEL. THEN THE OWNER'S SON TAKES OVER AND HE HAS CLIPPED A PINK WEIGHT TO THE CENTER SPOKE OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CAR IS THEN DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES ON NARROW WINDING ROADS WHILST THE DRIVER FOOLS AROUND PAYING ZERO ATTENTION TO THE ROAD. WHEN HE ENTERS A LONG STRETCH OF STRAIGHT ROAD HE NEED TO NUDGE THE WHEEL BECAUSE THE INERTIA OF THE WEIGHT HAS LITTLE EFFECT. OWNERS ARE LEAD TO BELIEVE THAT THE AUTOPILOT IS 40% SAFER THAN A HUMAN BECAUSE NHTSA HAS PUBLISHED THIS AS A FACT (BASED ON DATA SUPPLIED BY TESLA) OWNERS NOW FEEL JUSTIFIED IN DEFEATING THE NAGS WITH A STRATEGICALLY PLACED WEIGHT AND FEEL CONFIDENT THAT IT IS ENTIRELY SAFE TO DO SO. COMPLAINANT, A PHYSICIAN, HAD TAKEN DELIVERY OF A 2016 TESLA MODEL S ON DECEMBER 22, 2016. THE FOLLOWING DAY, SHE PULLED INTO HER DRIVEWAY AT HOME AND BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. WITH HER FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN FROM A STOPPED POSITION TO SPEEDS OF BETWEEN 40-60 MPH. THE VEHICLE PLOWED THROUGH THE BRICKS OF HER DRIVEWAY, THROUGH SHRUBS SEPARATING HER PROPERTY FROM HER NEIGHBOR, WENT THROUGH AND ACROSS THE NEIGHBOR'S YARD AND ONTO AND ADJOINING STREET, WHERE IT COLLIDED WITH A TRUCK.

THE TESLA AUTOPILOT IS NOT ONLY A FEATURE THAT DOES NOT WORK, IT IS SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS. THE NEW VERSION 8 SOFTWARE IS ACTUALLY MORE DANGEROUS THAN VERSION 7. THE CAR REGULARLY STEERS OUT OF ITS LANE AND DOES NOT DETECT CARS TO EITHER SIDE THAT ARE LESS THAN 2 CAR LENGTHS IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE SAME DEFECT APPLIES TO CARS ON ITS REAR WINGS. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE CARS HAVE EITHER CUT IN FRONT OF MY VEHICLE OR HAVE COME VERY CLOSE TO THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THE CAR ADJUSTING OR BRAKING AT ALL. I HAVE GIVEN THE FEATURE MANY OPPORTUNITIES (>100) AND CAN SAY FOR CERTAIN THAT IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT ON A SIGNIFICANT PERCENTAGE OF OCCASIONS, IF I HAD NOT INTERVENED IN TIME. THE EMERGENCY BRAKING FEATURE IS ALSO INEFFECTIVE, AND ONLY WORKS IN VERY LIMITED CIRCUMSTANCES. I CAN COMPARE THIS TO THE AUDI SYSTEM, WHICH IS EXCELLENT AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL. THE ISSUES ARE HARDWARE RELATED WHICH TESLA HAVE JUST UNDERSTOOD, ANNOUNCING THAT FUTURE CARS WILL HAVE HARDWARE THAT WORKS. EXISTING VEHICLES WILL ONLY GET SOFTWARE UPGRADES THAT WILL NOT CORRECT THE ISSUES. I HAVE VIDEOS THAT SHOW CARS ARE NOT DETECTED, SO CAN PROVE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX WITH SOFTWARE. THIS MUST BE CONSIDERED A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE SO THAT THE FEATURE CAN BE CORRECTED AND THE SAFETY IMPROVED TO ACCEPTABLE LEVELS. I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE AUGUST, 2016 AND THE ISSUES I HAVE DESCRIBED HAVE OCCURRED BETWEEN AUGUST AND NOVEMBER., 2016. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT NOW AS THE SYSTEM IS LABELED 'BETA' SO I WAS AWARE THAT IMPROVEMENTS WERE NEEDED. THIS IS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TESLA AUTOPILOT. THIS REPORT HAS JUST BEEN POSTED ON THE TMC FORUM. AS WE WENT UP A HILL, THE CAR WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AT 50 MPH. THE SALESPERSON SUGGESTED THAT MY FRIEND NOT BRAKE, LETTING THE SYSTEM DO THE WORK. IT DIDN'T. THE CAR IN FRONT OF US HAD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE SALESPERSON THEN SAID, "BRAKE!". FULL BRAKING DIDN'T STOP THE CAR IN TIME AND WE REAR-ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF US HARD. ALL AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. I MENTION THIS FOR THE OBVIOUS REASON THAT AP ISN'T AUTONOMOUS AND IT MAKES SENSE TO HAVE NEW DRIVERS USE THIS SYSTEM IN VERY RESTRICTED CIRCUMSTANCES BEFORE ACTIVATING IT IN A BUSY URBAN AREA. THE SALESPERSON WAS UNDERSTANDING AND APOLOGETIC. WHEN I CALLED TO MAKE SURE IT WAS CANCELLED, THEY SAID THEY WERE AWARE OF MY SALESPERSON'S NOTES IN THE SYSTEM, BUT DIDN'T MENTION IT UNTIL I ASKED AND ONLY AFTER ASKING MY WHY I CANCELED. THEY PROMISED TO SEND ME AN EMAIL CONFIRMATION OF THE CANCELLATION. IT DIDN'T ARRIVE. THIS EVENING I RECEIVED A CALL FROM TESLA. THEY WANTED TO KNOW IF I WANTED TO CANCEL(!). THE PERSON WAS TOTALLY UNINTERESTED IN THE CRASH, EVEN AFTER I ASKED IF SHE KNEW ABOUT IT (FROM THE SYSTEM NOTES). TOTALLY FLAT. THEY SENT ME A CANCELLATION EMAIL, BUT DIDN'T SPECIFY THAT THE DEPOSIT WOULD BE REFUNDED. THIS ISN'T COOL AND I CANNOT BELIEVE A COMPANY WITH THIS MUCH POSITIVE P.R. WOULDN'T HAVE MOVED THIS WAY UP THE LADDER IMMEDIATELY TO MAKE SURE THAT SOMEONE WHO'D ALREADY ORDERED A CAR AND WAS INTRODUCING A POTENTIAL BUYER WAS TAKEN CARE OF. THIS CRASH COULD EASILY HAVE RESULTED IN DEATH OR INJURY. PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO STOP THIS DANGEROUS EXPERIMENT.

AS USUAL THE CAR DIDN'T START STOPPING IN TIME AND THEN WHEN IT DID BEGIN TO STOP IT DIDN'T APPLY THE BRAKES HARD ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY STOP IN TIME. EVEN THE COLLISION WARNING WENT OFF JUST AS I BEGAN MANUALLY HITTING THE BRAKES. I DON'T KNOW HOW WE PASS THIS INFO TO TESLA BUT THAT SURELY WAS NOT OPTIMAL. AP IS DEFINITELY SMOOTHER IN TERMS OF ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION, BUT I CAN'T USE IT AS I SERIOUSLY FEAR FOR MY LIFE. NOT GOOD. [XXX], TUESDAY AT 5:17 AM WELL - FINALLY UPDATED AND TOOK A 200 MI TRIP. AESTHETICALLY PLEASING TO ME BUT FUNCTIONALITY TOOK A COUPLE OF STEPS BACK. RUNNING AP I HAD 3 OCCASIONS WHERE AP SWERVED ANOTHER DIRECTION. I AM CONFIDENT THAT HAD I NOT BEEN HOLDING THE WHEEL THERE WAS GREAT POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT. SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHEN THE CAR QUICKLY SLOWED DOWN AND CAME BACK UP TO SPEED WITH NOTHING NEARBY. NAVIGATION WAS ALL MESSED UP. HAD ME DOING LOOPS AND CUTBACKS ADDING MANY MILES HAD I BLINDLY FOLLOWED IT. NOT EVEN GOING TO MENTION THE AUDIO AND LACK OF WAYPOINTS, ETC....AND THE NEW FREQUENCY OF THE NAG IS ANNOYING. THIS IS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TESLA AUTOPILOT UPGRADED VERSION 8.0 IT IS CLEAR FROM THE MANY YOUTUBE VIDEOS ALREADY POSTED THAT OWNERS ARE NOW PLACING EVEN MORE TRUST IN THE AUTOPILOT BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT THE RADAR AND OTHER ENHANCEMENTS MAKE IT SAFER THAN BEFORE. ALSO THE MESSAGE TO HOLD STEERING WHEEL IS STILL BEING IGNORED AND OWNERS ARE OPERATING HANDS FREE FOR MORE THAN 3 MINUTES AT A TIME WHILE FIDDLING WITH THE DISPLAY SCREEN AND TAKING THEIR EYES OFF THE ROADS. HE ASSURES THE DRIVER THAT THE AUTOPILOT IS PERFECTLY SAFE AND ALLOWS HIM TO TAKE HIS HANDS OFF THE WHEEL AND DRIVE WHILE DISTRACTED. HE EVEN REACHES OVER AND PUTS HIS HANDS THROUGH THE SPOKES OF THE STEERING WHEEL TO PERFORM AN AUTOMATIC LANE CHANGE WITHOUT EVEN GLANCING IN THE MIRROR. ON IH90 BETWEEN GILLETTE WY AND BILLINGS MT ON AUG 8, 2016 I WAS DRIVING AT 75 MPH WITH AUTOSTEER ENGAGED. THE DAY WAS CLEAR, IT WAS ABOUT 9AM, AND THE ROAD LANES WERE CLEARLY MARKED. AS I WAS GOING AROUND A MODERATE CURVE (NO SPEED REDUCTION SUGGESTED) IN THE RIGHT LANE, THE CAR SUDDENLY VEERED TOWARD THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I HAD MY HAND ON THE WHEEL, BUT THE RIGHT TWO WHEELS WENT PAST THE RUMBLE STRIP AND ONTO THE SHOULDER BEFORE I COULD BRING THE CAR BACK ONTO THE ROAD, DISENGAGING AUTOSTEER. IF AUTOSTEER HAD CONTINUED THE CONTROL THE CAR, I AM CERTAIN WE WOULD HAVE LEFT THE ROAD AT HIGH SPEED AND CRASHED THE CAR. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO CRASH, AND WE CONTINUED ON OUR JOURNEY. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO TESLA AT THE TIME IT OCCURRED. AT THE TIME WE WERE ON A 26 DAY ROAD TRIP ACROSS COUNTRY. I HAD PREVIOUSLY NOTED THAT AUTOSTEER HAD TRIED TO VEER THE CAR TO THE RIGHT, BUT NOT AS AGGRESSIVELY AS THIS INCIDENT. EACH TIME IT OCCURRED, HOWEVER, I HAD TO DISENGAGE AUTOSTEER AND TAKE BACK CONTROL OF THE CAR.
