1. The Horn Button in NOT located in the center of the steering wheel but is located as a separate button off to the side and therefore is difficult to located in times of emergency when it is needed. 2. Where the button is located it is not intuitive in times of panic and emergency to try and located where to press the horn button. If you happen to be turning the wheel, it is almost impossible to find the button. 3. On future Tesla X models. Tesla the Manufacture decide to relocate the horn back to the center of the steering wheel. 4. We have had several close calls and missed accidents partly due to the fact we could not located the horn button in times of emergencies. 5. It seems like it would be a simple fix for the manufacturer to install an updated steering wheel for the safety of all occupants and other drivers.

Tesla has taken the horn away from the traditional center of the steering wheel and put a ridiculously small button on the side of the steering wheel. Most times when you need to use your horn it’s because of a sudden, unanticipated situation. It’s intuitive to hit the center of the wheel. It’s absolutely impossible to find the tiny button in that situation. One has to take their eyes off the road and look for the button. By the time it is located the situation is over. I understand Tesla has corrected this on their current vehicles and gone back to the traditional center of the wheel. But that does not help owners of the affected autos. They should be required to offer a solution, like a stand alone button that can be attached to the center steering wheel. The current configuration is flat out unsafe.

The horn is in a place that is difficult to find in hazardous situations rather than in the center of the steering wheel like every other car on earth. We have found it dangerous many times

All trailer hitches installed on Tesla Model X and Model Y vehicles do not meet the standards for towing in the US. These hitches are from Bosal, a European manufacturer, and there is no way to safely tow most trailers in the US including Home Depot, UHAUL, Airstream, boat trailers, etc. and meet the manufacturer safety specifications. Model X and Model Y owners on the road today are not following Tesla's manual and are using a tow ball adapter way outside the safety spec for the Tesla hitch. This poses a serious safety concern which could lead to failure of the hitch and the trailer detaching from the car while in motion. This poses as serious safety concern for the drivers, passengers, and everyone around the vehicle in tow. Please investigate this. I quick look at the Tesla manual specifications and the standard 18" height of trailers in the US makes it clear there is a serious issue here. Please investigate asap. I have contacted Tesla at least 10 times and nobody there is taking action on this issue.

I’m writing to formally report a persistent issue with Tesla’s air conditioning system. Despite repairs performed last year and reassurances that a software update would resolve the issue, my AC still fails to cool so regularly temperature staying above 100. Today, while driving, the interior temperature reached 102°F, making it unsafe and extremely uncomfortable driving with kids on back seat.

May 13, 2025

While entering an intersection, a vehicle with a stop sign decided to to not stop. I went to use the horn in my 2023 Model X, and slamming the airbag with my hand did nothing. EVERY car in the WORLD has the horn as the center via the airbag. Tesla must recall ALL vehicles without a horn in the center. Lack of use of the horn severely impairs my ability to operate my vehicle.

Apr 30, 2025

In multiple cases in California. The small button for the digital horn was impossible to reach or activate an emergency situations. This occurred to me and my wife while I’m parking lots and on roads when other vehicles threatened to hit us. The mechanical horn was removed as a cross cutting measurein the model X and it is a major safety hazard.

Mar 22, 2025

On my 2023 Tesla Model X, the horn button is a capacitive touch button among several other buttons and it is difficult to use on a daily basis and impossible to find in an emergency. Yesterday, another car was drifting into my lane on the highway traveling at 70 MPH and I could not locate the horn in time to alert them. I had to drive evasively to avoid a serious accident. This has happened at least 7 separate times already. 2024 Tesla Model Xs now have the button in the center of the steering wheel where it is on every other car I have ever driven. Yesterday, I contacted Tesla service about this critical safety issue and demanded the replace my steering wheel with a center horn button because of the document safety issues. They refused. There needs to be a recall forcing Tesla to replace these defective steering wheels with the new and safe design before people get killed.

Mar 3, 2025

The Horn location is not in center of steering wheel, rather a small button on the right side of the wheel. Cannot be found without looking down for button during a turn. Someone is going to get hurt.

Jan 29, 2025

This is a serious safety concern regarding the full self driving auto pilot for this vehicle. While traveling on a clear day on [XXX] at around 1630 hrs on [XXX], with the full self driving auto pilot engaged, the vehicle on 2 separate occasions attempted to lane change across the center divide and into the opposite traffic lane; both time required immediate corrective action on my part. This was a very scary experience. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Summon mode did not detect a pole where the car parked under a shed and ran into it resulting in damages to the driver’s door and side fender. Contacted Tesla through the app and was only told to take it to a bodyshop.

Jan 2, 2025

The horn button is dangerously placed. It is near impossible to activate in an emergency situation and has been worthless when I needed it. Nearly got hit a number of times that could have been avoided if horn was operable in the center button. THERE SHOULD BE A FREE RETROFIT

Dec 24, 2024

My model year Model X has a poorly designed horn function on the steering wheel. In several instances, I try to push the middle of the wheel out of habit and reaction, but there’s no mechanical push horn! Tesla installed a small tiny non-tactile horn button off to the side. It’s easily missed and you need to find a small pinky sized area to push. This is unsafe. So much so, that the 2024 and newer Tesla have an actual horn function in the middle of the wheel like every other car. Please make Tesla retrofit these horn function to the newer type which is much safer!

Dec 24, 2024

Vehicle not paying attention, nearly swerved into my vehicle and in the moment, unable to find the horn button. Instinctively went for center of wheel but there is nothing here - have to search for small button on right

Dec 14, 2024 Crash

Horn button is a safety issue. 2023 TeslaX is dangerous without a center horn. Went into a ditch to avoid an errant truck because I looked down to find the tiny button. Blinker buttons are completely ineffective when making a turn, major safety issue. Need a stalk for blinkers.

Dec 12, 2024

The button horn on the side of steering wheel is unsafe in emergency situations. Searching for a button on the steering wheel is dangerous because you only have a split second to alert others. The button horn for the newer models of the same vehicles have a horn in the center for safety reasons. Therefore a recall should be implemented for the manufacturer to retrofit the models that was released with the button horn on the side of the steering wheel.

Dec 7, 2024

The 2023 Tesla Model X does not have a physical horn in the center, rather a small touch sensitive button located on the side on the steering wheel. The button does not even have any physical bump to make it easy to find without looking. This is a huge safety issue. When in near collision conditions requiring other drivers to be alerted to the vehicle's presence, there is no time to look down to press the button. It is not in an intuitive location and the location of the button changes as the wheel is turned making it even more difficult to find. Tesla has made it clear that this is an issue by changing the steering wheels on the 2024 plus models to include a physical center horn, however refuse to recall and replace the current steering wheels under warranty. On multiple occasions the horn could not be sounded in time or at all when other drivers move into the lane unsafely or need to be alerted to the vehicle's presence to avoid potential collisions. This is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed. Thank you.

Dec 3, 2024

Touch horn button on steering wheel is difficult to use when in an emergency situation or when trying to get the attention of another vehicle’s driver on the roadway or parking lot. The 2003 Tesla Model X does not come equipped with a center airbag or mechanical horn on the steering wheel. It’s very difficult to find or feel the touch horn button when you’re in a panic situation. This is a definite safety issue and a major design flaw on behalf of Tesla.

Dec 2, 2024

The horn on this car is a small button on the steering wheel. I have had many incidents when i needed to honk the horn in an emergency situation and i had to either take my eyes off the road (too dangerous) or forgo using the horn to try to warn the other drivers of a potential accident,

Dec 2, 2024

The turn signal is located with 2 small buttons on the steering wheel. In several incidents i have been unable to activate the turn signals while merging into traffic because the steering wheel was being rotated to enter a cloverleaf freeway entrance and i could not locate the turn signals without taking my eyes off the road. Therefore cars near me could not know my lane merge intention.

Nov 23, 2024

The horn button on the steering wheel is extremely dangerous. It is too hard to find it with my thumb in time, and has almost caused me to get into multiple accidents. When others cannot see me while yielding to traffic, I tried to honk and because there was no center haptic horn, I had to slam on the breaks. The horn should be in the center of the steering wheel. It is extremely unsafe as a tiny button because you cannot find it in time during an urgent traffic incident.

Oct 22, 2024

The implementation of buttons on the steering wheel for turning signals and horn is a safety concern. Those buttons are capacitive type touch switch, no tactile feedback. Often hard to locate when not driving in a straight line. The buttons also hard to read under some light conditions, and easy to activate by mistake. This could could increase the safety risk of the driver.

Sep 28, 2024

The steering wheel horn is a small button on the side rather than on the middle of the steering wheel. Because of this, in an emergency where I was about to be hit in a T-bone vehicle accident, I tried to hit the horn to alert the other driver but was not successful in doing so. I find it dangerous to not have the horn available on the middle of the steering wheel, or at minimum a more easily accessible button.

Sep 27, 2024

Regarding the horn location on the steering wheel: When the steering wheel is not straight, it's difficult to locate the horn button without looking down. It isn't even a physical button. The driver has to use the finger tip to feel for it. In an emergency, there's no time for this. There have been numerous near-miss accidents due to the need to look down to find the horn button. It's purely luck that we haven't had a serious accident. The horn's position is both ridiculous and dangerous. Some Tesla owners have complained to the NHTSA about the horn's location. Tesla company told me that they couldn't change to horn button to the center where the airbag is just like the rest of the world. This is a matter of saving lives. They refuse to make any correction.

Aug 28, 2024

HORN BUTTON PLACEMENT ON STEERING WHEEL IS EXTREMELY SMALL AND NOT ON THE CENTER OF THE STEERING WHEEL. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIND AND ACTIVATE IN AN EMERGENCY. ALSO HAARD TO PINPOINT WHILE TURNING.

Aug 13, 2024

The horn on this vehicle is a tiny haptic button on the right side of the steering wheel instead of being a large (or multiple) big real buttons in the middle of the wheel. This is a glaring safety issue because it's very difficult to find. The difficulty compounds when under stress or when turning the wheel tightly in a parking lot. At that point it's almost impossible to find the button. Before purchase Tesla told me that I'd be able to swap this steering wheel out for an updated one with a practical horn for $250. I've contacted Tesla monthly for almost a year and I keep getting the same run-around --- that they are not currently allowing the swap.

Jul 22, 2024

Unable to locate the touch area for the horn in an emergency situation. A couple of times I had a vehicle backing into me, and could not find the horn. In an emergency situation, you need to keep your eyes on the object and not be looking around the steering column where to touch. After dark, it is totally impossible to find. I find it to be a significant safety concern. Now that Tesla is finally releasing ‘24 model X with the center horn I personally think Tesla should replace non-center horns/wheels at no charge if customer desires. Thank you for your assistance in this manner to create a recall.

Jul 21, 2024

In this model, horn is a small touch button to the right side of center. In the event of emergency- this cannot be easily located. I almost had a crash trying to take off my eyes from driving to find the small horn touch button. The horn should be moved to center of steering- like they finally did for 2024 models.

Jul 17, 2024 Crash

Description of the Problem: Component/System Failure: On [XXX], while using the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature of my Tesla Model X, the vehicle experienced severe phantom braking and unexpectedly veered off the road near Rio Vista, Antioch, CA. The failure appears to be related to the FSD system, braking, and steering. The vehicle is currently in Tesla’s possession and available for inspection upon request. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) Safety Risk: The malfunction put my safety and the safety of others at significant risk. The sudden phantom braking and veering off the road could have caused a serious accident. Fortunately, there were no immediate external damages or injuries, but the incident highlighted a critical safety failure. Reproduction/Confirmation: The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by an independent service center. Tesla has had the vehicle for over three weeks, claiming to conduct a diagnostic check, but has not communicated any findings. Inspection: The vehicle has been inspected by Tesla, but no results have been shared. No inspections have been conducted by the police or insurance representatives as there was no collision or external damage. Warning Lamps/Messages: There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure. The incident occurred suddenly and without prior indication of a malfunction. Summary: The incident highlights a severe malfunction in the Full Self-Driving system of my Tesla Model X, posing significant safety risks. Tesla’s lack of communication and failure to provide a loaner vehicle during the extended diagnostic period is unacceptable. I am requesting NHTSA’s assistance in addressing this safety concern and ensuring a thorough investigation.

Jun 29, 2024

Horn placement on steering wheel is a small button to the right of the airbag, which is difficult to engage, rather than in the center like nearly all vehicles for the last 50 years. I have had several incidents where I need to use the horn to warn another driver and rarely can find it when needed. Very dangerous and I feel lucky it hasn’t resulted in an accident.

Jun 27, 2024

After a recent service call, the driver door that automatically opens when I approach the car with my phone app opens really quickly and big. It used to only opens a small gap. I asked the service center and the said it is due to software updates and it is not adjustable. The problem is that it doesn’t detect ongoing traffic when car parked on the street. The door also hit me twice so it was not able to detect me approaching at certain angles. It is not open in angles consistently that I think it can cause cars crashing into the my car’s door at street parking. I’ve asked tesla service center yo report the problem to corporate but do not trust that they would treat it seriously.

Jun 24, 2024

Safety hazard / concern over Horn Button on steering wheel as well as Turn Signal buttons. Not having a center horn has been challenging and dangerous as instinct is to press the center of the wheel and not look for the horn button in quick road hazard situations, merging traffic, etc.

Jun 23, 2024

The 2023 Model X is not equipped with a real horn, only a button on the side of the wheel. Yesterday someone veered into my lane and I was unable to find the button in time almost causing a collision. It's idiotic that they were allowed to not include a physical horn. The 2024 model year fixed this but they offer no free retrofit.

Jun 19, 2024

Horn button on steering wheel in the 2023 Model X is difficult to access when trying to warn another vehicle of an unsafe manuver such as a lane change without noticing my vehicle next to it. In my specific incident, a driver on my left tried to change lanes and nearly collided with me as I had to visually locate the small button (1 of four buttons on the right top of the steering wheel) then press it which takes much more time than hitting the center of the steering wheel with the palm of your hand to alert the other driver with my horn. I instead had to hit the breaks and narrowly avoided a collision. This delay in finding the 1-2 centimeter button is a design problem that has been address in the 2024 Model X by Tesla which added a phyical push horn to their steering wheel like every other automobile. This a safety design issue that will lead to accidents and needs to be addressed.

Jun 18, 2024

The 2023 Model X has a very small off center horn button unlike every other car I have ever owned which had the horn in the center airbag area. I have had several occasions where I needed to alert a driver trying to merge into my occupied lane and failed to do so because my muscle memory could not find the horn were it is expected to be. Even if I do remember that the horn is a tiny button on the "right" side of the steering wheel, the right side is in a random location based on your current position of the steering wheel making it almost impossible to find the button while turning the wheel to avoid it situation you are trying to alert. Tesla has since corrected this issue in the 2024 model but they should be forced to recall existing models with this poorly designed steering wheel and horn position. It is a major safety issue which can easily lead to accidents that could have been avoided.

Jun 17, 2024

Horn button is not in center of steering wheel. This makes sounding of the horn by a driver less accessible in an emergency or urgent situation to avoid a collision, accident, or pedestrian. Please request a recall for a standard center horn location I'm the steering wheel.

Jun 16, 2024

It has been hard for me to signal right and left in a timely manner due to the fact that the turn signal stall has been replaced with two buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. To make this new design even more complicated to learn, when the steering wheel is turned 180 degree (ie when parking or exiting a parking space) the right/left signal buttons are on the opposite side of the wheel and in reverse positions. Second, the only way that I know of to honk the horn, is to press a small button on the right side of the steering wheel. My wife and I have never been able to honk the horn in a timely fashion because this is not how anyone has ever learned to operate the horn on a car, which is supposed to be a bump on the center of the steering wheel. Tesla should be required to replace these controls with standard controls that do t require a new training program and hours of drills to make them instinctive.

Jun 15, 2024

Due to the location of the horn on the 2023Tesla Model X it poses a serious problem in an emergency. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The location of the horn on the steering column is a serious danger in an emergency due to its design and location making to hard to access in a emergency situation How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? there have been several close calls with other drivers merging over and there is not enough time to apply the horn due to its location. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? i know at least one other tesla model x owner who has reported this same issue to Tesla Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The problem is due to the poor design which puts the horn in a bad location with the potential of causing an bad incident.

Jun 5, 2024

the horn on the 2023 Tesla x is horribly positioned, and a real safety concern.

Jun 2, 2024

I was driving in the slow lane of a 3-day (each direction street). On my right were cars parked on the street. A car in the 2nd lane was coming up and passing me and it decided (without signaling) to turn into my lane. Scared I tried to press the horn, but pressing the large padded center of the steering wheel is not the horn. Frantically, as the car kept moving into my car, I slammed my hand on the center of the steering wheel, but no sound. Finally I slammed on the brakes, not knowing if I would be hit by the car behind me. The stupid horn on the Tesla is just a small button in one corner of the steering wheel that moves around as the steering wheel is turned. This is an incredibly dangerous and mostly useless location for a car's horn. Please please require Tesla to provide a center-of-steering wheel horn and not some tiny, off-center, difficult-to-find-in-an-emergency horn button. I believe Tesla has recognized how dangerous this is and changed the steering wheel design on 2024 cars, but for all of the prior cars, this danger remains. Please require Tesla to fix this dangerous condition. Thank you.

May 26, 2024

This model is designed with a small button on the steering wheel to activate the horn- I have attached 2 pictures of the horn button ( not a standard horn in any way) to show how small and non- standard it is. In the event the driver needs to use the horn, the driver needs to take his eyes off the road/traffic conditions to locate the small horn button. Also if the car is not traveling in a straight line and the steering wheel is turned to either side, it is even more difficult to locate the small horn button as the wheel is not positioned straight up. I have had several situations since I purchased the car in 11-23 where I needed to sound the horn to warn a pedestrian, a car that was pulling out of an intersection when I had the right of way, and a bicycle that crossed out of a bike lane into my traffic lane. In each of these instances I was not able to make the horn sound quickly and when you are in an unsafe driving situation the last thing you want to do is take your eyes and attention away from what is going on in front of you to look for a small horn button. I feel strongly this is a safety issue that is an accident waiting to happen. I understand through readers forums that Tesla has updated and retrofitted some models with the standard center wheel/ airbag type horn activator, but also was told that does not apply to my vehicle. I have asked Tesla service if there is a fix for the issue and their response was to contact customer service. I have not had any response from Tesla in regards to my concerns.

May 25, 2024

The steering wheel has a small button for the horn to honk instead of the actual big center . This is very dangerous , when coming close to an accident and need to alert the other driver , i simply cannot honk the horn as its instinct to press the center of a steering wheel. Instead they made it this little small button on the steering wheel which would be impossible to press in A stressful situation

May 11, 2024

The Tesla Model X uses a small capacitive touch horn button which is impossible to locate and press in an emergency. I was driving and was about to be hit by a drifting vehicle and nowhere to move. I tried to honk the horn, but could not find it since it is not a normal center horn. Almost collided with the other vehicle. This design is extremely dangerous and should have never been allowed. It should be recalled before it causes injuries or deaths.

May 3, 2024 Crash

Car garage door activation software. My Tesla car activated the garage door, opening it while I was getting ready to back into the garage, as it was supposed to do. After I initiated backing into the garage, the Tesla, on its' own, activated the door to close as I was backing into the garage. The garage door came down onto the top of the spoiler on the rear of my Tesla Model X. I did not activate the door opener on the control panel. While backing up, I could not see the door in the process of closing. I have a video of the incident. I contacted Tesla and was told they would not cover the damage.

Apr 27, 2024

We bought our tesla model x on or about June 6th 2023, on or about march 22nd our right rear tire developed a leak, we took it to les Schwab tires to have it checked our and they discovered it was a cracked wheel, they said it was a defective wheel and that we should take it to tesla to get replaced as they have seen 3 others in the last 2 weeks. We took it to tesla and they said they would not warranty any wheels as they have never warrantied any before. They said it was due to road impact but there is no sign of any impact visible other than the crack. Around that same time our passenger door window button fell inside the door panel so we scheduled an appointment to have it fixed and had been advised it would be covered. My wife took it to them on or about April 19th and one guy said it probably wouldn't be covered then the other service adviser stated that it would be warranty as we have not had the car for even a year but then the service manager refused to fix it and wanted us to pay over $1,000 to fix it. They said it was from abuse that it broke but not sure how you abuse a switch push down on it with your finger to activate switch. Now on Saturday April 27th we have developed another tire loosing air, now the left rear due to another cracked wheel. Now I did more research online and have found numerous people with the same problems and having 3-4 of their factory wheels breaking. This is also on top of the car wearing out the inside edge of the tire while the center and outer part of the tire has lots of life left in it meaning that the alignment is not properly set but tesla says that it is normal because it is a performance vehicle. Not sure that I would consider a 6 passenger sub a performance vehicle

Apr 25, 2024

The horn's position on the steering wheel is not fixed, leading to instances where it fails to alert other vehicles or passengers in potentially dangerous situations. For example, there was one occasion where a vehicle approached from the opposite direction, necessitating the use of the horn, but I struggled to locate it as the steering wheel was turned at a 90-degree angle. Additionally, the horn button itself is quite small. The turn signal indicators have caused issues in multiple scenarios due to difficulty in locating the switch. This often occurs when needing to signal a quick left-right or right-left maneuver, especially when the steering wheel is already turned in the opposite direction

Apr 20, 2024

The horn button is a hazard to use when in an emergency and wheel is turned. Such as a u-turn and someone makes an illegal right and i have no time to find the horn button when wheel is upside down on a u-turn. This is unsafe and should be replaced with a horn that is in the center of the steering wheel like most cars.

Apr 17, 2024

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to address this issue. As you may already be aware, the honk button is not centrally located on the steering wheels of Model X or S vehicles. This has led to several instances where cars backing up in parking lots have nearly collided with my vehicle because I instinctively honk to alert them. Tesla has recently redesigned the honk button, moving it to the center instead of the touch thumb button on the right side. I strongly urge Tesla to consider replacing the steering wheel to place the honk button at the center for improved safety. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.

Apr 16, 2024

The steering wheel only has a flat tiny horn button that is impossible to use in an urgent situation effectively rendering the car with no horn in higher velocity scenarios. Finding the horn button (which not only is not raised but actually not a button) while driving to honk the horn is a near impossible task. I’ve had several close calls where I couldn’t get to the horn in time. Fortunately I was able to avoid an accident. The steering wheel needs to be replaced with a horn pad or button that is immediately accessible in an urgent situation.

Apr 10, 2024

The Tesla yoke steering wheel - the placement of the horn button being a haptic button on the right side of the steering wheel poses a great safety issues when trying the horn and unable to locate it. Whether the steering is in the straight position or turning it, it is almost impossible to honk the horn in an emergency. In the past month, I almost ran over a pedestrian that did not look going into the crosswalk and I was unable to honk, and a car that made a lane change on the freeway and I couldn't locate the horn. This is a GREAT safety issue which the NHTSA should make a recall for Tesla to change the yoke to the updated design at no charge since the updated design has the horn in the midde. There is a reason Tesla did this and they should go back and retro fit the yoke with the horn button to the newer design.

The car allows you to set favorite channels and change them from the left scroll wheel on the steering yoke/wheel. It works for FM radio, but stopped working last November for XM radio. After 9 contacts with Tesla, they have not corrected the defect. In order to change the favorited channels, it requires 3 or 4 taps on the screen - which requires removing your eyes from the road for 4-6 seconds. When it works properly, tapping the scroll wheel left or right changed the channel to next or previous favorited channel. I neatry went off the road last week trying to change the XM radio to the next favorite. This did work on both my previous model Tesla sedans from 2013 until 2023. It worked on this car for several months, but stopped working in November 2023. Nine requests to Tesla for repair have have not been successful in any action.

Apr 4, 2024

This wasn't just one incident, but many incidents since I got the car on [XXX]. The horn is not in the center of the steering wheel where it is on every other car. It is a tiny button on the steering wheel that is impossible to find if you are turning the wheel and even harder to find when someone is going into your lane and is about to hit you or when they are backing out of a space and you have no time to look for the tiny button. I've come close to getting in many accidents because of this. Tesla has since changed the steering wheel/Yoke so the horn is where it should be (in the center of the steering wheel) but they are not replacing the old dangerous ones. Horn is not in the center and rather a button. This makes it very hard to hit in an emergency. Please make them replace all past and new steering wheel with this issue.

Mar 28, 2024

My steering wheel doesn't have a usable horn functionality. There is a subtle button on the side of the wheel, which isn't even a physical button, and it's very small in size. My wife and I had a few situation already where we couldn't do a horn signal quickly enough and we barely escaped an accident in those cases. The existing horn button is very hard to use, it's placed non-intuitively, it's impossible to find without looking at the steering wheel, and it's very hard to use when the steering wheel isn't positioned straight. All other cars I driven over my lifetime had a horn right in the center of the steering wheel, which is the most obvious and usable placement, given the urgency of the situation when drivers are supposed to use it.

Mar 26, 2024

While operating my vehicle, it is required to use turn signals to indicate turning intention to other drivers. Even after thousands of miles of use, the 'Capacitive touch' buttons on the steering wheel that Tesla has are unsafe, unusable, and infuriating. These buttons are difficult to locate, difficult to engage with and impossible to use quickly or reliably. Every Tesla without turn signal stalks should be recalled. I often press the wrong button, no button, or just have to simply give up on signaling because it is impossible to safely or reliably use the buttons provided. Turn signal stalks are easier, faster, more reliable, and thus safer. Please help end this nonsense by requiring tesla to fix this. thank you.

On an occasional basis, and during a critical event, it is imperative that the operator of any vehicle be able to quickly, and reliable use the horn. This is needed to alert other drivers of dangerous situations, or bring attention to those around the vehicle. After driving this vehicle several thousand miles, I have determined that the horn 'button' is not something anyone can commit to memory or use safely when needed quickly in an emergency. Muscle memory of all cars is 'push center for horn'. The 2021-2023 Tesla Model X uses a button that is touch sensitive and nearly impossible to operate quickly or reliable in an emergency situation. Tesla has corrected the issue with the 2024 Model X, however that leaves thousands of cars not repaired. Please require Tesla to correct this asinine oversight.

I took delivery of a Tesla Model X Plaid in December. The turn signal and horn buttons on the steering wheel vs. stalks is a major safety concern to me. Finding the buttons, espcially in an emergency situation is next to impossible without looking down to find them. Obviously looking down is the last thing any driver should have to do during an emergency. Please pressure Tesla to do something about this critical safety issue.

The horn in the Tesla Model X is very hard to operate in real world driving environments because it is a haptic button that’s is placed amount other haptic buttons. Several times over the past few months I have been unable to safely operate the horn in situations where another driver was coming into my lane or otherwise I required the use of the horn in an emergency situation. I had to take my eyes off the road in order to look for the haptic button and remember where it was placed. In my opinion, Tesla over-engineered the horn and made it unsafe to operate for the driver

The problem is with the design of the steering wheel. The turn signals are buttons on the left side of the steering wheel, but when you have to signal a turn while on a curve or anytime the steering wheel is not in the original or “home” position it is difficult to signal my turn. And depending on the position of the wheel, the buttons to signal a turn may be upside down or pointing in the wrong direction. Also, the horn is another button and is difficult to reach and find quickly among the other four buttons it is hidden among. The instances I have needed to use the horn to quickly to alert another driver of where I am, I haven’t been able to find the horn button in time. It’s a problem that it isn’t the center of the steering wheel where I instinctively reach for it

Every time I put vehicle in reverse, the main screen display which shows vehicles and objects behind and surrounding the vehicle turns almost completely white. I reached out to Tesla and booked a service appointment and was told that the issue I was experiencing was a result of a software upgrade. When I challenged the service advisor to explain how this was an upgrade, he said there was a issue with the software that had been released and that it would improve over time. It has been about two months now and nothing has improved. The safety features of the car when reversing are severely compromised and yet Tesla is unwilling to sort it out.

I would like to report an issue with the Tesla model X, which is present in all but the very most recent versions. The issue is with the horn function, which most would agree is essential for safe and defensive driving, as well as notification and communication while in automobiles. Nearly all vehicles have this function on the steering wheel to be activated with an obtuse press of the center region of the steering wheel or a well-demarcated and palpable (as well as ergonomically placed) button for the thumb on both sides of the wheel. The Tesla model X, and I believe other models as well has a single button press they can just barely be reached with my relatively larger male hands. It is also texturally indistinguishable from the rest of the steering wheel functions. This makes it extremely challenging to activate in an urgent situation. And while the feature can also be activated by pressing your palm on the right side of the steering wheel, the concave shape of this portion means that more often I have activated a different feature of the car, rather than activated, the horn because a more precise hand placement is needed. I have had several near accidents that would have been less close had I been able to more easily reach and activate the horn function. There must be many more people who have suffered injury and property damage or caused such due to this safety issue. It appears they are now manufacturing cars with a more typical center press steering wheel to activate the horn, but this does not solve the issue for the thousands of us stuck with the less safe version.

I bought a new model X and took delivery on December 23 2023. On January 26, 2024, it stopped working in the middle of the road with 35% battery left. While my wife was driving the vehicle it gave her a sudden warning on the dashboard “pull over safely, vehicle shutting down. Vehicle may not restart.” My wife had no opportunity to pull over and it was in the middle of the road. The car was essentially functionless, she could not activate the hazard lights and became a road hazard. If this were to happen on the highway this could be catastrophic.

Jan 26, 2024

Tesla moved the horn activation from the center of the steering wheel to a tiny button. This is extremely dangerous as the horn often needs to be activated very quickly. The reflex move is to hit the center of the steering wheel but now I am required to look down and find the tiny button to press with my thumb. There have been numerous times that I have not been able to activate the horn in time and have had near collisions as a result of not being able to wan the other driver. This needs to be moved back to the steering wheel center.

Jan 22, 2024

The placement of the horn button on this vehicle is absoutely unsafe. There was a near miss accident where a car ran a stop sign and in the heat of the moment, trying to turn the wheel, the horn could not be engaged. That is because the horn is engaged on a tiny touch button on the righthand side of the steering wheel and not through the traditional pushing of the middle of the steering wheel. Because when you maneuver the wheel, instinct kicks in and you slam on the middle to honk, but nothing happens, it's impossible to calm yourself, look down and find the button. This is absolutely a dangerous oversight by Tesla to replace the wheel and horn mechanism and they should be forced to replace this at no cost.

Jan 20, 2024

Had three incidents now - where I attempted to warn other drivers of potentially unsafe activities - went to push the horn, however this car has removed the horn from the center of the steering wheel and replaced the horn with a capacitive button. Finding and operating this capacitive button in an urgent and safe manner to either warn other drivers, road users or pedestrians or animals is not natural and in fact a significant safety issue. The center of the steering wheel has been the location for horn activation for a very long time and moving reduces the ability to quickly and safely warn others is a significant issue.

Jan 14, 2024

Model X has relocated the location of the horn to NOT be the center middle of the steering wheel, it has been relocated to the right of the center and turned into a "button". In multiple driving instances in which I've needed to for safety reasons alert another driver of an impending collision, my past 20 years of driving history has alerted me in fight/flight mode to go "muscle memory" and hit the NON-EXISTENT HORN in the middle, almost causing an accident each time. Terrible idea.

Jan 13, 2024

While merging onto the freeway, I merged into the blindspot of a truck which had moved over to let traffic onto the freeway. As I was getting up to speed to get out of the truck's blindspot, the truck began merging into my lane. I attempted to use the horn to warn them I was there, but my muscle memory tried pressing the mechanical horn in the center of the steering wheel. As it was not there, but rather on a small tactile button, I was unable to safely notify the driver of my presence and instead had to take to the shoulder to avoid being hit. To summarize my complaint, the location of the horn as a small button on the side made it so I was unable to safely notify another driver of an emergency situation. The placement of the horn is by design. It was working as intended.

Jan 13, 2024

The horn locates on this car is just a simple small button on the steering wheel that very hard to locate under emergency situation. I 100% sure that I can’t use horn under any emergency cases.

Jan 13, 2024

While operating the vehicle, the horn is not where it should be. Tesla moved the horn to a button, when every car in the world has the horn as the center of the wheel. During times of crisis and needing a horn, seconds count. Having to learn horn changes is absolutely ridiculous. By not being able to activate the horn in a timely fashion, it delays or removes ones' ability to utilize a critical safety function to alert others or prevent issues by using the horn.

Jan 13, 2024

There is no physical button for the horn and it's difficult to find the digital button when you need it at a moment's notice. This presents a safety concern that I believe should be recalled.

Jan 13, 2024

The lack of a center horn is ridiculous. On a number of occasions I have needed to hit the horn to alert another driver but have missed since I have to look for a capacitive touch button on the wheel.

Jan 13, 2024

Extremely difficult to accurately press small horn button on steering wheel in emergency situation. Requires looking at wheel to find button. Why this car doesn’t have the horn in the center is a dangerous mystery to me.

Jan 13, 2024

The horn button is a safety hazard as it's not in the middle of the wheel but rather a button on the steering wheel. This loses a safety hazard in an emergency situation.

Jan 13, 2024

It’s very difficult to use the car horn due to Tesla making the horn a capacitive button on the steering wheel. Same for the capacitive buttons for the turning indicator. Additionally because Elon is cheap, he has removed the rain seasons from the car and relies on the faulty cameras to determine when to wipe, often resulting in dry wipes and no wiping functionality when it rains

Jan 13, 2024

The electronic horn fitted to my steering wheel is dangerous and needs to be recalled. I was driving and a car was heading towards me from the side and was not slowing down. I went to use the horn to tell the driver I was there, but because it's not a mechanical horn (it's a slippery plastic, not even a button), I could not find it in time. The car nearly hit me and I had to swerve. A horn should be able to be reached instinctively to warn another driver in a critical safety situation. The driver should not have to look down to the steering wheel, find a shiny piece of plastic, and 'rub' it to hope it works. Those milliseconds are crucial. Tesla are now sending newer versions of my car WITH a mechanical horn, so they clearly have realized the mistake. This steering wheel needs a recall and free replacement.

Jan 13, 2024

It has become apparent that the turn signals and horn buttons buttons have safety concerns. Both functions are severely amplified when needing to invoke them while the steering wheel is turned/turning causing the driver to temporarily become disoriented around where the buttons are without needing to take their eyes off the road. I’ve run into this multiple times and has created situations where I’ve missed the buttons. The horn should reside in the center as standard with nearly all vehicles. Also, I’ve accidentally signaled or honked the horn due to proximity to other less urgent functions like audio controls or wiper functions.

Jan 5, 2024 Crash

I was the passenger in this Tesla. When we turned the Tesla accelerated and the driver tried to brake but she screamed to me they weren’t working. The Tesla slammed into the back of my parked SUV and pushed my parked car and us through the garage and my car through the back brick wall. We were both at high risk of possibly dying in the car crash. We suffered injurys and still are suffering. There has been a recall on the model Tesla’s brakes I will attach a picture. Some of the questions are unknown because I was the passenger of the car.

Nov 13, 2023

Driver ahead of me went to turn into wrong way/ one way st, immediately decided to turn back into my lane. The horn is a small button and mashing on the right side (as tesla suggested) resulted in the auto pilot turning on, windshield wipers, and voice control. All which didn't work and prohibited me from reacting. The horn needs to move back to the middle where it has been for centuries, mashing doesn't work as it was more dangerous than if the horn had just been where it was supposed to instead of a tiny button.

Nov 11, 2023

Couldn't find little horn button in an emergency. Horn should be activated by center push on steering wheel, not some random little button that is hard to find in an emergency when the wheel is not straight.

Oct 17, 2023

Horn should be relocated to center of steering wheel from small button on steering wheel. Very dangerous in times of emergency, as hand goes directly to center of steering wheel.

Aug 20, 2023

Touch capacitive buttons on the steering wheel and doors are major safety hazard. The touch buttons on the steering wheel for critical functions like blinkers, headlights, wipers and the horn are all moving with the steering wheel (so you have to look down to locate these critical functions while still moving, especially if you are turning at all), and worse, these buttons sometimes fail to activate even when you do push them. I have several times tried to turn on my blinker for a sudden lane change due to a hazard ahead, and the blinker does not respond / activate. My wife was driving and someone started to run a stop sign in front of us - I yelled "HIT THE HORN!" and she replied with "I CAN'T FIND IT!!!" (we were driving on a bend in the road, the steering wheel was not in the neutral position, and the horn is a tiny touch capacitive button). The button on the driver door to get out is the same or very similar, and I have a 30 second video I can forward you of how this button can fail to respond. In the video, you can see the tip of my finger bend when I first touch the button, I move my finger all over and around the button, and nearly 15 seconds later, the button finally responds and opens the door. The driver door also pops out about 10 degrees when it does open, then becomes very stiff and you have to push hard to get the door to open the rest of the way. The button for the headlights is also a safety issue - if you push and hold the headlight button for too long, it locks the high beams on, instead of just flashing them (or a long duration flash). When you push the headlight button, a menu pops up on the bottom center portion of the center screen, that will allow you to toggle automatic high beams on and off, but when moving, it is only there for 2-3 seconds, and the buttons are extremely small, making it hard to change settings for the headlights safely (must look away from the road, and try to hit the small buttons while moving / bouncing around).

Apr 17, 2023

There was not an incident. But the vehicle is not so safe. The driver needs to move eyes from the road for many normal functions like wipers, horn, high beam. In addition, using the phone is dangerous because all the information is displayed on the main screen and requires the driver to look away an select options. This should be displayed in the dash board behind the steering wheel (like it was in prior models)

Jan 13, 2023

The car has a little button to press for the horn rather than having the horn be in the center of the cars steering wheel. Per Tesla this is possible but is locked and needs a firmware upgrade to be active. This was announced almost 1 year ago. When driving yesterday a car began merging into my lane. I tried to honk but could not find the button without taking my eyes off the road which i didn't want to do. My natural reaction was to mash the center of the wheel, but that of course doesn't work. If tesla just needs to activate this, i don't understand why they haven't. This is a serious safety issue.

There is an issue with the GPS in that the location is not accurate, sometimes it is off by 10-20 feet, enough to put it on a different road, sometimes it's off by 100s of feet. This is very dangerous as when using Autopilot, it uses map data to set the cruising speed, and if the GPS is reporting the car is on a different road, the speed can change to being faster or slower than the actual road the car is on. This results in sudden braking. The car will be on the highway, traveling at 55MPH, and then all of a sudden the GPS thinks its on a side street near the highway, and quickly brakes hard to the side streets speed limit 25MPH. With this issue, its not always safe to operate the auto pilot. Many people in tesla owners forum, say the issue is from an interference with the cars internal cabin camera and the GPS antenna and replacing the camera fixes the issue.
