While using cruise control at highway speed, the car suddenly slams on the breaks causing major panic. Oversteering onto incoming traffic and cars following are affected slamming on their breaks to avoid contact. Have contacted Tesla Service Center multiple times addressing the problem (Phantom breaking problem). What they keep on telling me is that there is no fix to the problem at this time. The cruise control intermittently turns off and on by itself with no warning or obstruction. No lamps warning or messages prior to failure. My Tesla 2022 Model Y (Performance) has been inspected at the Tesla Service Center many times, but to no avail problem still exists.

In 9/2025 I noticed that the vehicle software was defaulting to a speed limit of 55 mph. I noticed that when in any form of autopilot and FSD it would accelerate to that speed. This happens in any situation before the car encounters a sign or an area that it's internal map corrects it, which is not common outside of major routes in Idaho. This includes paved marked roads, graded roads, single track dirt roads, my driveway and garage. Sometimes the car controls it's speed consistent with conditions, sometimes not. It can happen unexpectedly, and that's the issue. Where I have learned this is a problem, I of course turn off the AP or FSD and drive myself, however, if I am in driver assist mode and things are going well and the speed limit in the vehicle changes suddenly to the default 55 mph, it can take a moment for me to react. In October 2025 I reported this to my Tesla Service center as well as Tesla's over the air and on line email reporting options (from which I got no response). The service center entered a ticket directly with Tesla, and told me that that Tesla was aware. The explanation that came back was that it was due to a mapping update for the internal map of the car. They said it was the result of Google Maps setting the default speed limit in Idaho, which is where I live, to 55 and that this was due to a September 2025 update. They said it might be corrected with the next update, which has not occurred at this point (January 2026). This speeding behavior can happen suddenly and unexpectedly and seemingly randomly, and has the potential to injure pedestrians, the driver, and property, not to mention that it is also exceeding by far the legal speed limit. Drivers from other areas that may not be aware of the issue are likely to be caught unaware. There is absolutely no reason for the default speed to be 55, ever. It's unsafe, and unnecessary. It is rare to see a speed limit of 55 at all in Idaho. Most of the roads are above or below that speed limit.

I am reporting a repeated safety defect that happens only in rainy conditions. My 2022 Tesla Model Y repeatedly shows critical safety warnings including “Automatic Emergency Braking unavailable”, traction and stability control disabled, and “Vehicle Hold unavailable”. This has occurred during normal driving in rain every rainy season for 3 years, despite 4 service visits and parts replacement including the inverter. It started when I was pregnant and is now ongoing with my newborn in the car. The system failures happen while driving in normal wet/slippery conditions and greatly increase the risk of a crash. This appears to be a systemic safety defect, not driver error, and Tesla has not fixed it after multiple service attempts. Events & Dates: •First occurrence: Feb/2024 •Service visits: 02/01/2024 1. Verified customer's concern via vehicle log data. Technician reviewed the vehicle's logs and found that the vehicles communication system was faulted. Technician was not able to duplicate the concern at this time. Performed diagnosis and found no issues present at this time. Verified vehicle's communication system is operating as designed at this time. No further repairs are recommended at this time. Recommending customer to continue to monitor situation at this time. 2. Updated vehicle to latest available firmware version per service bulletin. •Most recent occurrence: 01/01/2026 fyi today is the 4th time I’ve indicated this issue , and this is during my pregnancy again, I feel extremely stressed and helpless

On [XXX], while using Full Self-Driving (FSD) to drive to a hospital in Oak Park, Illinois, the vehicle experienced sudden unintended acceleration during the disengagement of FSD. As the vehicle approached the hospital area, I initiated disengagement of FSD to manually enter the parking area. During—or immediately after—the disengagement, the vehicle suddenly accelerated at full power without warning, causing an immediate loss of control and a collision with a nearby fixed structure. No system warnings or alerts were issued prior to the event, and the acceleration was so abrupt that manual intervention was not possible. This occurred in a low-speed, street-level environment where no acceleration was intended or expected and does not correspond to any normal driver input. Based on review of preliminary incident data provided by Tesla, there appear to be irregularities during the FSD-to-manual control transition, including missing or invalid input values, gaps in accelerator/brake/steering signals, and speed readings inconsistent with the crash severity. These indicators suggest potential instability in the real-time control system during disengagement. This report is submitted due to concern that sudden unintended acceleration during FSD disengagement may represent a safety defect with potential risk to drivers and the public. The car stopped in a busy freeway saying electric issue and doesn’t give sufficient time to drive to shoulder. This is the 2nd time this happened within 2 weeks. First time, tesla said high voltage controller had an internal issue with voltage sensing. the hv controller was replaced along with pyrotechnic fuse. Tesla assured this shouldn’t repeat and it repeated again. This has kept us in a catastrophic situation. I request immediate attention to this error and matter.

After installing the most recent Tesla software update, my vehicle immediately displayed multiple alerts: traction control disabled, stability control disabled, and reduced steering assist. Cameras were disabled, navigation was disabled and my vehicle location was wrong. The vehicle lost core safety systems that are critical to safe driving The car functioned normally before the update. Immediately afterward, these safety systems were disabled. Tesla Service has since diagnosed and confirmed, They state “an internal short within the drive assistance module (computer). The internal short is causing excessive current draw, resulting in loss of driver assistance features. The latest software has revealed the underlying root issue within the car computer.” This indicates that the vehicle was operating with a latent defect that Tesla’s diagnostic update exposed. The update did not cause wear-and-tear failure; it surfaced a hidden safety defect inside Tesla’s own hardware. Why This Is a Safety Concern Loss of traction control, stability control, and steering assist creates a significant risk of loss of vehicle control. If this had occurred while driving at speed, the sudden loss of these systems could have led to an accident. Attempting a reboot while driving (Tesla’s standard troubleshooting suggestion) would have created further distraction and risk. luckily when the car catastrophically failed and was unable to turn, I was in my driveway and not on a highway or any other roads.

Tesla's FSD functions slowly has been reduced in the last years. Firts Tesla disabled the double pull function, resulted taken away the standard cruise control function. Lately, the fully paid ($12000) FSD is not recognizing streetsigns anymore, which worked perfectly before. This function is crucial to manage speeds, lanes, pedestrians and school zones or just attend in public roads! Tesla service center refuses to fix this issue or offer any additional solutions! This is very concerning and those vehicles with full FSD are not safe to operate on public roads anymore! Thank you

While driving at approximately 25 mph on a local street in Seattle, WA, my Tesla suddenly engaged the brakes without any apparent reason. The vehicle was not in Autopilot or Full Self-Driving mode, and my foot was actively pressing the accelerator pedal at the time. The braking was abrupt and forceful, causing a sudden deceleration. The weather was clear with good lighting. There were no obstacles, vehicles, or road hazards in my path that could have triggered the braking. The unexpected stop was shocking and could have led to a rear-end collision, as there were vehicles behind me.

Multiple, random occurrences of hard braking at highway speeds when there was no object or obstruction ahead. In the 2-1/2 years we’ve owned the car this has happened on two lane and multiple lane highways, generally at speeds over 50 mph. Also, the windshield wipers randomly deploy even when turned completely off. They generally work when it’s raining but the delay function is also randomly not in sync with the settings or actual rainfall.

On [XXX], traveling westbound from [XXX] on [XXX] using adaptive cruise control. Pick-up truck rapidly pulled up behind and cruise control shut off, stated "unavailable" and Tesla started to brake...manually overrode. Travelled another 1/4 mile and reengaged cruise control after pulling away from following pickup. Pickup caught up and cruise control shut off again. At 4-way stop on [XXX] , rechecked system and then headed for [XXX] on adaptive cruise control. Pickup came up again and cruise control shut off. At next intersection I turned right and pickup turned left...had "electronics" sign on side of truck. Not able to get full name. Question: Is there electronic systems "out there" that can take control of Tesla adaptive cruise controls? I tried to pass this on to Tesla, but wouldn't or couldn't take the above message. When driving home and try to make a left turn, the steering doesn't work and car suddenly speed up even though try to brake, the whole car is out of control, and the car hit my neighbor, and it's extremely dangerous! Thank god that no one is hurt. Police came and did a report but didn't say anything about Tesla. After that, I checked the alert history, nothing special, the only alert is remind me that window cleaner is running low. I tried to contact Tesla but failed, no one answer the phone call, no where to report. Everything is too bad

Phantom braking occurred when the adaptive cruise was engaged when a truck entered the road from the right side. The car abruptly slowed when the truck crossed my lane although there was no eminent danger. The car behind us nearly collided with us due to the sudden braking incident. This is the third sudden braking incident; however, the others were related to a bridge or overpass.

I was performing a 3-point turn on a residential street. While reversing during the turn the Automatic Emergency Braking enabled and slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a complete halt instantly. This caused my head to hit the headrest with enough force that I have headaches and brain fog the next day, indicating a concussion. I was 10 feet from the nearest parked vehicle when reversing; the AEB kicked in erroneously. This is not the first time that Tesla's AEB has erroneously and dangerously engaged while I was driving.

On the highway I set my cruise control. It registers as the max speed on the tesla screen. Regularly the max speed changes very suddenly and the vehicle brakes. For my most recent trip drove on the highway and this happened 3 times. The max speed changed from 78 mph (the speed I set it at) to 40 mph. Another time it changed to 45 mph and a third time to 55 mph. Sometimes there are cars directly behind me when this happens. The sudden change in speed on a highway is very dangerous. I have also reported this to Tesla.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while his wife was parking the vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop as needed. The contact stated that the vehicle collided with a wall and was stopped by a curb. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was diagnosed by the manufacturer and the contact was informed that the accelerator had been depressed inadvertently; however, the contact was adamant that it was brake pedal that was depressed at the time of the failure. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 10,444.

While driving at night with the cruise control on, the emergency braking system engaged. It appeared that the road surface went from dark to a lighter color.

Sep 11, 2023

Many occurrences of phantom braking have occurred since I purchased the vehicle several months ago. I was driving on I-5 in California with the cruise control set at 70mph, then changed lanes from left lane to right lane with about 5-6 car links from the semi truck to the rear in the right lane. The emergency braking feature engaged with no vehicles in front of me in either lane for at least 500 yards. The semi truck locked up its breaks to avoid rear ending me. I applied the accelerator as quickly as possible and when I did the semi was approximately 3 feet from crashing into the rear of my vehicle.

While driving with the adaptive cruise control engaged, the car has suddenly braked (hard) when the associate optical system encountered a shadow or some anomaly on the road ahead. This "phantom braking" has occurred numerous times on our vehicle, and speaking with our son who also has a Tesla Model Y, he has experienced the same behavior. To date, I have not contacted Tesla, due to the intermittent nature of the problem, and trouble getting a response from their website. For the time being, I will not use the adaptive cruise control if there is another car within several hundred yards behind me in order to avoid a rear-end collision incident. My understanding is that Tesla removed the radar input component of adaptive cruise control, which would have prevented this type of behavior. A prospective fix is to restore a radar sensor input to the system.

Phantom braking multiple times at highway speeds while on a 3840 mile road trip. Autopilot including cruise control were on. The car would suddenly brake very hard. I don't know if it would have stopped completely or not because I always took control immediately.

Jul 8, 2023

While using cruise control on the highway, the car suddenly decelerated twice. Each time the cruise control was set around 78mph, and it decelerated to approximately 70mph. No warnings were issued before, during, or after the decelerations— the car continued as if nothing had happened.

The contact rented from Turo a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at approximately 65-70 MPH in rainy weather, the contact's daughter released her foot from the accelerator pedal to decelerate; however, she lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle crashed into a guardrail and went into a ditch. The vehicle then inadvertently reversed onto the highway. The contact's daughter slammed her foot on the brake pedal, and the vehicle stopped immediately. No warning light was illuminated. No air bags were deployed. A police report was filed. The contact's daughter suffered body aches, and medical attention was received. The vehicle was towed to an unknown location. The contact was unaware if the vehicle was deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was unavailable.

I was driving on the highway with autopilot activated. There were no cars in front, beside or behind me. A car did come up behind me at a fast speed. My car suddenly started to brake (phantom braking). The car coming up behind me sped around me. There was no reason for the car to brake like that.

Almost everyday I have to restart the car while I'm driving because the car starts playing songs that are mean, discriminatory, or out right telling me to "Kill yourself on the beach" and "You can't sit here". While I'm driving I'm forced to restart the car to regain control of my instrument cluster which when resetting while driving you basically lose all features of the car minus steering gas and brake. The sentry mode isn't recording, the indicators aren't working, there is no speedometer or navigation, all safety features are disabled. It's the perfect time to commit a crime, no evidence except my iphone dashcam and anyone else around. I have to sometime do this with children in the car because the radio keeps cursing and I can't change the song. This car is a haunted death trap and I have entered pre-arbitration with Tesla but they have not responded. I have a lawfirm on standby that has offices in FL, CA and TX. They want my 10,000 gigabytes of EVIDENCE bad unlike NHTSA. That's because they are fascists and trying to cover this up. He also bought Twitter as part of this coverup. I talked about it in my podcast about 3 years ago that's still on YouTube. This is all premeditated torture and attempted murder. Here's the video (PS I intentionally don't monetize my IG so its evidence not acting: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CrN7GEPLYh_/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D

Same fatal error I've been reporting for over 6 months and about 10 "OVER THE AIR UPDATES" Yes we all really 'NEEDED' more ways to make fart and poop sounds and open our rainbow LED [XXX] by voice command BUT WHAT ID REALLY LIKE IS FOR LITERALLY ANYONE IN ALL OF AMERICA TO DO THEIR JOB! Maybe if someone would do an investigation into to how much FRAUD there is at literally every level of Tesla from the very top all the way to the pathetic worms at the bottom that somehow find the one vertebrae they have left to continue lying to protect the bank account of a lying megalomaniac. Maybe they would investigate how Tesla vehicles can be used as remote operated drones to kamakazi themselves and kill anyone in the vehicle you don't like or even worse they could hack it thru the radio and use it to crash into literally anyone on the road as described by [XXX] himself and the FBI when asked about drone technology. I mean if [XXX] is allowed to spy on all of planet earth without their consent, freeze their car radio, miss every auto payment for 8 months, keep your car in an overflow lot for 3 days on hidden camera and never work on it once 5 times, make your car stop on the highway 50 time, stop your car from charging at home with your own charger in your own house then why does anyone follow any rules? Why don't we all just go out in the street and rob and kill and rape anyone whos dumb enough to believe that a car can drive itself? Really tho why do I even bother doing any of this everyone on the internet just calls me a stupid, fat, [XXX], [XXX], [XXX] fan,[XXX]. So like why would you EVER buy a Tesla. It's made by SLAVES FOR F SAKE! I'm a slave for Uber, Tesla and Apple. Slavery is real. I lost $28,000 last year doing 1,000 Uber and Lyft rides in an electric car that's supposed to save money on gas but actually costs more than gas if you use a supercharger. Worst purchase in my entire life by far. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cq-10appVGM/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMAT

Repeated random breaking when in cruise control or auto steer. It is available for inspection upon request. Car abruptly stopped on busy road at 60 miles per hour more than once. Slows on expressway repeatedly, which can potentially cause loss of control or being hit from behind. Vehicle has not been inspected for this issue. There have been no warnings of the problem prior to the failure. This problem has happened the entire time I’ve owned the car, especially, but not only, when driving on freeways.

Mar 27, 2023 Crash

On Saturday, 3/4/2023, I stopped at a supercharger lot to charge my car during a trip. As I entered the lot, I noticed that the road conditions were poor, almost like a gravel road. To be cautious, I drove slowly towards the three empty parking spaces in the middle of the lot, intending to park in the middle spot. I noticed that the road conditions were even worse in front of the parking spot, but it looked wide and not too deep, so I didn't think it warranted serious concern. I carefully maneuvered the car around to prepare for backing up. I've been using the HOLD braking mode, which allows for one-pedal driving, for more than five months. Just as I lifted my foot off the accelerator, the car jerked forward from a small pothole. I still expected the car to come to a stop, as my foot wasn't touching the pedal. I made a comment to my passenger that I was puzzled why the car was still moving as I looked down at my foot far above the pedals. Suddenly, there was a really loud sound (like revving if I remember correctly) that I had never heard before, which surprised both me and my passenger. We exchanged a puzzled look just as the car suddenly jumped forward at full power and hit the car in front of us before I could do anything to stop it. I believe that this was a software issue related to overcompensation of losing traction control on both sides as the car came to a stop. It's important to note that I did not purchase Tesla's Full Self Driving and was not using any driving assistance features at the time of the accident. In addition, I believe you can request more data from Tesla. I do not have access to the camera recording of interior scene. Luckily, both me and my passenger as well as the two people in the front seats in the other vehicle (also same white Tesla Model Y) were not injured. I can't get Tesla insurance to even investigate the accident. After the accident, I noticed that the Tesla App reported that Automatic Emergency Brake is disabled (only occur)

Mar 26, 2023

Same issue I've been reporting several months. This morning I downloaded yet another software update, got in my car, drove to Chick-fil-a on a Sunday because Tesla has not fixed this fatal braking bug on the highway for a non-existent round-a-bout so I use that for the car to navigate to. The car tries to get on the state road instead of the highway so I cancel and take over and drive onto the highway/expressway myself. After a couple miles the FSD finally takes over in a 70mph zone and reduces my speed to 45mph and stays at 45mph while passing several 70mph signs it clearly sees in its own 'Tesla vision' on the map in AR(Augmented reality). I cancel and speed back up to 70 before the next overpass where the car puts its hazards on, pulls into the slow lane, says it's executing a round-a-bout. Comes to a complete stop on the highway with hazards while in the travel lane, cars whipping past me on the driver side. Then the car starts yelling at me to grab the wheel which I've never let go of during this entire event so I shake the wheel vigorously left and right and the car does not process that I'm holding the wheel (This is so Tesla can commit fraud when they blame it on the driver and buy more time because NHTSA rules aren't up-to-date on software patches and NHTSA needs to just recall all FSD because Tesla has displayed inability to repair) THEN to add the cherry on top while the car is stopped on the highway, yelling at me to pay attention while I'm shaking the wheel; I press the door open button and my door opens into the fast lane; allowing the (inattentive driver) to unconsciously fall onto the highway in the fast lane at 0mph while not in drive. I have been reporting these vulnerabilities for months specifically the bluetooth radio vulnerability that was just proven in a hacking competition where Tesla awarded a new car and $350,000 for a vulnerability I was reporting 6 months before. https://drive.google.com/file/d/11KURZKFfS4axS21PqYd_urDZLcHTuOzP/view

Mar 21, 2023

Hello, me again! So I downloaded the newest software update and in less than 24 hours and less than 1 hour of using 'Full Self Driving' and 'Auto Pilot' before the car tried to kill me and other people as usual. Same road I've been reporting for months 429 Eastbound and Westbound (Sanford FL) the car will confuse 429 with SR46 (1,000ft north) and when it gets to any of the overpasses with round-a-bouts underneath the bridge the car starts to stop on the highway (0mpg in a 70mph zone). This is absolutely terrifying; what's even more terrifying is that Tesla is claiming the cars FSD works on 'Artificial Intelligence' but that is a LIE because the car and Tesla have not learned from my many reports and have made zero changes. The only good change they made was my suggestion to Tesla in one of my many complaints about this lemon car they ripped me off on is allowing me to send them a 10 second voice clip describing what went wrong in the car (which once again was my idea) when actually using it sometimes my heartrate is still so high from cars whipping past me 70mph while I'm going 0mph that its hard to even articulate in words what happened so quickly; assuming Tesla even reviews the report and makes changes which they haven't for about 6 months of me reporting it. Car still tries to drive me off road over a transformer at home that is clearly visible on Tesla gps map which could turn the car into a bomb (so I was told by an Uber passenger who works on transformers and was leaving an OSHA meeting about a transformer blowing up on him and his coworkers). 9/10 times it's right but I know its not truly 'Intelligent' because why would it ever revert to a path I've canceled so many times? I'm calling Tesla's bluff and also they deleted me after applying to the AI Engineer job posting on their website when I started reporting these errors because Tesla doesn't really care about their customers like me. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-Jk4oLzgfERV0DaSpHygCn60Anj2Xq_a/view

Car randomly slams on the brakes while cruise control is active. Happen most frequently mid-day while the sun is out. Most frequent when coming over and overpass or small hill on the interstate. ~5 time in a day and of travel. Brake are apply and vehicle slows from 80 to sometime as slow as 60 in a couple seconds. No visible hazards or vehicle on the road at the time. Very scary and dangerous. Contacted Tesla about it and they said a software update would fix it, still happening since I purchase last June and reported in July.

I was driving my Tesla Model Y on 02-26-2022 with my wife in the passenger seat. We were on our way to pick up our son and his two friends from the movie theater in Lincoln Square North, Bellevue Square, Washington. As we entered the Lincoln Square parking garage approximately around 6 30pm and turned into the narrow passage leading down to the several floors of parking lots at approximately 5 miles an hour, the Tesla on its own, and to my alarm and surprise suddenly picked up tremendous speed and went careening down the parking driveway and slammed to a stop into the concrete boundary of the Pillar on parking level P2. The distance travelled from start to finish was to the best of my very rough guesstimate 60ft to 70 ft. My repeated attempts at slamming the brakes did not stop the car. The airbags deployed. •With the impact the car was completely totaled •The front right wheel broke free and hit the rear fender of a car parked in the Parking Garage in P2. - No one in the parking garage was impacted My wife was in great pain and very shaken. She was helped out of the car by a good Samaritan. Lincoln Square security reached us almost immediately. We called 911 and the fire brigade and police came to the accident site within minutes. The police inspected the vehicle and filed a case report. Post the accident, I took my wife to the ER. She was badly bruised with the impact of the air bags and seat belt restraint. We continue to get treated to manage the pain and the bruising. The experience was a horrific one and my wife has been badly impacted …it will take time for her to begin driving again. We have not been contacted by Tesla regarding this accident as of March 9, 2023.

Periodically while using cruise control, most often on toll lanes with a different speed limit than the non-toll lanes, the car slows down rapidly and unpredictably. There are no warnings, and the braking is can be quite considerable (10-15 mph). This only happens when using cruise control.

Jan 18, 2023

I had engaged Tesla’s “Full Self Driving” feature in a 25 MPH zone. As the speed limit changed to 35 MPH the vehicle correctly adjusted to 35 MPH. However, right after that I entered a school zone marked by a flashing yellow light. I used the brakes to slow down to 18 MPH, which disengaged the “Full Self Driving” feature because the vehicle did not adjust on its own. Once I was at 18 MPH I re-engaged “Full Self Driving” and the vehicle immediately started accelerating to 35 MPH again, in spite of the fact that I was in a school zone still. It seems the ”Full Self Driving” feature cannot detect school zones, even when marked by flashing yellow lights. The onboard visualizations appears to have detected them as stop lights.

Wanted to report a problem with Tesla's map navigation and adaptive cruise control (what they refer to as "Autopilot). I haven't seen this reported in the media so wanted to report it here. The map navigation system is problematic, when navigating using the map on the freeway, it will reroute a different path because it somehow thinks I am driving on surface streets. It does this consistently. Because of that, the car when on "Autopilot" will stop in the middle of the freeway, which is incredibly dangerous. This system aims to be safe (by stopping) but also causes greater danger to the following cars by having the car brake. This could be the source behind the "phantom braking problem" that is reported in the media.

Jan 10, 2023

“Phantom braking” episode: While driving on a two lane freeway using Tesla branded Autopilot (not full self drive) the car automatically and suddenly braked, reducing speed approximately from 70 mph to below 50 mph before manual intervention. This happened with no car in front or behind and while approaching a car in the lane to the right while also approaching an overpass. I also noticed there was a patch of uneven colored pavement beneath the overpass. One passenger in the front seat was thrust into her seatbelt in the event.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH with the cruise control activated, the vehicle decelerated independently and started shaking. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact deactivated the cruise control and the vehicle started operating as designed. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted or notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 3,413.

While driving with Autopilot engaged at approximately 65 mph the car suddenly decelerated to less than 40 mph and then accelerated back to 65. This happened again within a minute of the first occurance and I turned off Autopilot but left cruise control on. It then happened again and I turned cruise control off. Fortunately there were no cars following close behind me nor was I following close behind another car. In the first two cases there were intermittant shadows across the road cast by trees along the road side. In the third there was a large black programmable traffic information sign 20 ft or so off the side of the road that had no information displayed. There was no damage to the car or injuries to the occupants. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer. No warnings were displayed prior to the event.

Vehicle is approximately 9 months old with 13,488 miles. Starting today, the cruise control system which includes the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist features has failed. It will not activate, and attempts to activate it result in an error stating "cruise control unavailable." As a result, the car will not brake as it approaches other vehicles; will not maintain its speed; and will not maintain its lane. I made an appointment with the manufacturer's service center to have it inspected and repaired, but the manufacturer cancelled the appointment the same day it was made stating, in writing, that it is a "known issue," "replacing any component will not rectify the issue," and instead it "should be rectified in a future firmware update" without any time frame as to when. I asked is there is a service bulletin or recall notice and was advised that "specifics" cannot be provided "unless otherwise authorized."

Nov 20, 2022

I floored the accelerator, and heard a pop. The pedal then remained depressed about 50% of the pedal travel. I was able to drive the car normally, but only using about 50% of the pedal range to do so. I took it to Tesla for service and after diagnosis, had to replace the accelerator and brake pedal assembly. The mounting plate that held both pedals broke. They said it was impossible to break by stepping on either the brake or accelerator. An “outside force” must have caused the failure and they refused to cover the part and labor under warranty.

Nov 8, 2022

Car was at freeway speed (~70mph) and on cruise control, and out of nowhere the brakes were applied by themselves very abruptly. I was almost rear ended on the freeway as a result.

Nov 8, 2022

Alert was coming randomly while driving the car about several safety systems being disabled automatically without any audible notifications. Alert clears up after the car is locked for several minutes. Below is the alert message.. Automatic emergency braking disabled Automatic Vehicle Hold disabled Traction control disabled Stability control disabled Cruise control disabled This makes the car suddenly unsafe to drive if you are not paying attention to the screen. I have been on the road driving car at 60-70MPH several times when this happened. This can turn in to an accident. I provided the information and created a service appointment at Tesla which took a month before they can get me a scheduled appointment. Tesla fixed the issue with below note after further review. "A loose connection in the area of the steering gear was causing severe communication problems between the stability controller and the autopilot computer." Phantom braking occurs in the Tesla Model Y when the vehicle’s TACC system is engaged. This is not auto drive, this is the systems Traffic Aware Cruise Control. Unexpected Braking occurs decreasing “cruise speed” approximately 8-11 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. On a trip from the Dallas TX area to the Colorado Springs area, this unexpected phantom braking occurred approximately 3 dozen times on open highway and in clear, sunny weather. This is a major safety concern as this brisk deceleration can cause the vehicle to be rear-ended by vehicles following the Tesla.

Oct 17, 2022

When engaging cruise control on the highway we experienced phantom braking 2 times in 90 seconds while on an empty road. This was the first time we ever used the cruise control on the highway. The braking was aggressive, and enough to strain the passenger neck. It was scary and without warning. We feel it is too dangerous to use cruise control on our vehicle ever again for feet of causing an accident.

Oct 10, 2022

While driving on the interstate with the cruise control on the car suddenly applied the brakes. There were no other cars around and no objects on the roadway. This happened twice without warning on 10/09/2022. I have not reported this issue to Tesla yet but plan to.

Oct 9, 2022

My 2022 Model Y has severe phantom braking problems when cruise control or auto steer is activated. While driving at highway speeds the car slams on the brakes for no reason. This happened several times in 50 miles. I spoke to many other Tesla owners with the same problem. While driving at 70 mph on the interstate the car will suddenly and instantly apply the brakes hard. This is a severe safety issue. I am so scared that this will cause an accident that I have stopped using the cars adaptive cruise control and auto steer functions. I have contacted Tesla like everyone else, but have not gotten a response or fix. Please add this note to your pile of Tesla owners that are very pissed off that nothing is being done to resolve this safety issue. Thanks, [XXX] - Stoughton Wisconsin USA INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

While driving highway speeds with the cruise control on, car suddenly brakes. No vehicle or obstacle was in front of us. This happened approximately 6 times in 200 miles. 5 of the 6 times happened on the interstate in a rural area.

Last evening , when doing a lane change on Highway 680 , I lost control of the car and the car began to swerve pretty badly. Thankfully I hit the brakes on time and everything was fine again. A blue car was trying to get in my lane and I quickly changed lanes to be safe and the severe swerving began. It was like I was in a roller coaster. Thankfully it was a 4-5 lane freeway and there were no cars around me. It felt like the autopilot tool control and the swerving began. How do I lodge a complaint so that Tesla can fix it? Can I turn something off to avoid this in future because I am scared to drive the car again? I have a 2022 Tesla Model Y. Also is it possible to see some sort of video from 680 between 4-5 pm on Tuesday Sept 20, 2022? I was returning to San Jose from Fremont, CA. Thank you, Jyoti

While driving west on I70 today phantom braking has occurred at least 5 times. This has happened when using adaptive cruise control and autopilot. NOT SAFE!!

Sep 17, 2022

08/27/22 3:37 pm While driving on I25 north to Wheatland WY at 80 mph the adaptive cruise control slammed on the brakes. The weather was sunny, there were no other cars within sight in front of the Tesla or to the rear and the pavement was dry. Thinking there must be something that hit a sensor I resumed the journey. The same braking malfunction occurred two more times so I pulled into a rest area and searched to find automatic emergency braking and turned off that feature. Once more I drove with the adaptive cruise control. It did it again. Had there been a semi or other heavy vehicle behind me there would have been a likely fatal crash. The Telsa braked so hard I thought the airbags would deploy. This is a very serious safety issue that must be immediately addressed. I returned home and within the week sold the Model Y.

Sep 15, 2022

I was driving on a stretch of I-15 in Utah using the traffic aware cruise control when the car suddenly applied the brakes by itself. I was traveling at approximately 80mph when this happened. Scared me half to death. I wasn't sure what happened and thought it was just an anomaly. Later I was using the auto pilot traffic aware cruise control feature and the same thing happened. That's when I figured out it was an issue with the cruise control/auto pilot. When I was stopped, I looked up that this is a frequent issue with the Tesla Model Y, known as phantom braking. No one at Tesla mentioned this issue as I went through the purchase process, or when I picked up the car in Dec. 2021. I wasn't aware of that before and feel like I could have been in a serious accident. I felt lucky that I wasn't.

Sep 12, 2022

I have experienced "phantom braking" with this vehicle from the time I received it in Feb '22. There have been over 20 incidents. I do not feel safe using the cruise control in traffic or when any car is following me. It could very easily cause an accident. When cruise control is on, it will randomly apply emergency braking. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of vehicle following me is at risk because the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly applies emergency braking. I have not tried to address the issue with Tesla. There are never any warnings that this may happen. This is very unsafe and with the number of vehicles with this known issue, I hope the NHTSA applies pressure to Tesla to fix the problem asap. I do not feel safe using the cruise control and likewise it is not a safe situation for others on the road to have these vehicles driving with this issue.

While on a cross country road trip, our 2022 Tesla Model Y has repeatedly slammed on the brakes at highway speeds with nothing in front of us. Most times have been cresting hills, but one time it was on straight road with, fortunately, no other cars near us.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH and making a right turn onto the driveway of the home, the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration and drove forward into the garage door. The contact indicated that during the incident the accelerator pedal was not being pressed. No injuries were reported. The garage door and home were damaged. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 160. The contact stated that the vehicle was a total loss and not repairable.

Autopilot's adaptive cruise control has caused numerous sudden slowdowns without any traffic in front. Fortunately there wasn't a vehicle close behind me but had there been it could have caused a collision. I took a 3100 mile road trip and it probably happened between 20 and 40 times. Sometimes it would only slow from 70 to 60, but on a few occasions it was as if the brakes had been applied hard and went from 70 to 40 in just a few seconds.

Aug 28, 2022

In addition to the car only achieving 65% of its actual miles range claimed the cars operating system will freeze while driving (once every 3 days on average), forcing the driver to reboot the car while driving (hold both scroll wheel buttons on steering wheel). This takes away the ability to read the speedometer, to use indicators and basically ALL of the functions of the car. The rear view camera display also fails about 10% of the time which I have recorded. The car will also SLAM on the brakes while on the highway, driving in the rain on autopilot to allow a merging DHL van into my lane instead of switching to the left lane as advised by DOT/DMV and I recorded this on dashcam yesterday coming back from NASA. It is a daily issue that passengers in my Uber cannot buckle their seatbelts because the buckle is too low into the seat for them to easily find, in some cases passengers get disgruntled and I am forced to park and wait until they can buckle themselves sometimes taking over 5 minutes. The driver assistance features do not always work and also alert me and my passengers when it is unnecessary making it seem more like a gamble than a safety feature; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes when it shouldn't. The false claims and inconsistencies are unlike any other vehicle I've ever driven. Tesla is a CRIMINAL enterprise acting purely in self interest and preservation to maximize profits and MUST be held accountable and to the standards of all other vehicles in the USA driving on our roads. I am APPAULED at the way Tesla has silenced me (blocked emails and blocked my ability to schedule service) and accused me of trying to cheat on my wife with the non-existent female Tesla employees on my BBB complaint which the BBB closed out claiming they solved it when Tesla didn't address a single complaint, just attacked my character publicly also known as slander. Also 250kw superchargers only charge at 50kw after preconditioning without other cars chargingFU

Aug 23, 2022

Phantom braking was caused numerous times (over 20) during a 2000 mile roadtrip that seemed to be caused by autopilot misinterpreting heat mirages into an object to avoid. This caused the speed of the car to drastically reduce leading to unsafe braking conditions which caused several near rear collisions.

Aug 23, 2022

Driving 70 MPH on highway with adaptive cruise on. Light traffic, no vehicles on left side. I just passed a semi truck on right side and my car had a phantom braking incident. Slowed from 70 mph to 40 mph in a second or two. No vehicles directly behind me at the time. I pressed on gas pedal and speed resumed to 70. This has happened a couple of other times on a different highway.

Aug 22, 2022

When using the cruise control, the vehicle will suddenly brake losing 20MPH before I can react. It has always happened on the interstates, often with no other vehicles in front of me. On the last 2 day trip the brakes applied themselves at least 6 times. I can no longer use the cruise control as I'm afraid somone behind me will crash into me. Tesla has been no help.

Jul 28, 2022

While using cruise control (Traffic-Aware Cruise Control) on a recent road trip in our Tesla Model Y, the car unexpectedly and for no apparent reason, abruptly reduced speed. Our car is available for inspection upon request. Our safety and that of others was put at risk as a result of this unexpected reduction in speed while travelling on the highway. An accident could have occurred if cars travelling behind us did not similarly reduce speed to avoid a collision. The problem has occurred on a number of occasions where there was no apparent reason for the car to rapidly reduce speed. It has not been confirmed by a service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or others. It is a known problem with the 2022 Model Ys based on a published inquiry by the NHTSA (ref: https://electrek.co/2022/06/03/tesla-respond-increase-phantom-braking-complaints/). There were no warning lamps or indicators prior to the unexpected braking event.

On a 1,500 mile road trip I experienced phantom braking once every 30 minutes while using both auto pilot and cruise control

Jul 6, 2022

On July 2nd, 2022 I was driving back from a family visit in Palo Pinto County, TX and had auto pilot engaged for part of the drive. In a span of 40 minutes of that drive on a continuous stretch of Interstate 20 headed east to Dallas the car softly automatically braked once, and twice more strongly braked. In one of those instances I was near another car (near is defined as within 1/8th to 1/4 of a mile) and in both of the other instances I had NO one else within close proximity that could've caused a "reaction". That stretch of i20 is 2 lanes each direction with a median in between, no oncoming vehicles are within at least 75 - 100 feet. In the instance with the car closer, had I not been more reactive and paying attention closely, this WOULD have lead to an accident with another vehicle. In the instances with no traffic IMMEDIATELY near me.. given that rate of speed, it could STILL lead to an accident by over-reaction from others not expecting to see someone slamming on their brakes in a 75MPH zone. Tesla has been extremely unhelpful, their remote diag team says the system is "operating normally" and will not deal with the situation further.

Jul 6, 2022

2022 Tesla was in auto-pilot mode, not FSD. Phantom breaking occured on July 6 in Sacramento on Business 80, two incidents about 20 minutes apart. First incident, vehicle suddently slowed from about 65 to 30. Second incident, vehicle suddently slowed from about 65 to 10 (almost stopped) where we almost rearended. The driver was extremely angry as evidenced when he changed lanes to pass us (can't blame him), as Tesla began to reaccelerate. I have heard of phantom breaking incidents, but twice in one short trip where the second had the potential for a serious accident would indicate to me that Tesla needs to take action. I hope you relay this to them.

When using cruise control (with or without auto steering to stay within a lane), the car randomly breaks. This does not appear to be associate with signage along the road. It appears to happen more frequently in the right most lane. There are certain locations where this problem always occurs, but we cannot determine what is different about that particular exit than others. The most dangerous situations have been when the breaking occurs with a car closely following while driving on an interstate in the mountains (I-70). A relative driving my car was almost rear ended at those speeds while driving on I-70. The breaking is random and unexpected, which makes it more dangerous because as driver you are not prepared for this to occur. At a speed limit of 65mph, when you are driving in a curve and suddenly the car brakes, especially when using regenerative breaking, it is the same as slamming on the brakes. This could cause you to loose control over your car. The issue has been known to Tesla but has not been fixed and new cars are advertised and sold with adaptive cruise control when in fact they are faulty, rendering the feature useless at best, dangerous in most cases.

I am reporting 3 incidences of Phantom braking with adaptive cruise control on, and 2 incidences of phantom vehicle displays on the central console while parking into a garage. 4/17/2022 ~ 1pm. on RT 101 CA between King City and Camp Robert Rest Area/Bradley. Traveling at 75-78 mph on widely separated divided straight highway, with no trees, only low grass, and no cars nearby, we (my wife driving) experienced two sudden jarring braking slowdowns. This is a hazard if there is a car tail-gating us or if the following driver does not expect us to brake for no reason. 4/18/2022 ~ 11am on Rt 10 CA between Palm Desert/Indo and Desert Center, We were traveling at 76 mph on a widely separated divided straight highway, with no trees, and only low grass. A Tesla car in front of us suddenly braked for no apparent reason and shortly thereafter pulled over to the shoulder and stopped. A few minutes later we experienced a sudden braking action in our Tesla car. In May/2022 we observed two separate incidences of a phantom van displayed on the Tesla central console while parking our car into our garage. A phantom van appeared once on the right side and once on the left side when the Tesla car was half-way into the garage. We park in the center of the garage which is relatively empty with 2 plastic tool boxes on the left side and a Traeger grill on the right side. The garage is 19' by 19' with a 16' wide garage door opening.

Driving with adaptive cruise on and car will brake suddenly

Jun 12, 2022

Reporting “phantom braking” issues during 1600 mile cross-country from Kansas to California. During this trip there were approximately 45 incidences of the rapid uncommanded braking while on 4 lane divided highways. All driving was daytime, sunny weather at speeds between 70-80 mph. Braking occurred with both cruise control/auto steer enabled (No FSD), as well as only cruise control enabled.

I was pulling out of the garage and I heard disturbing sound coming from the bottom it sounds like something is breaking. I thought I drove over something like water bottle but a lot louder. So I stopped halfway through the garage and looked under, nothing visible looked around each tire nothing, checked the monitor screen no warning, nothing, so I thought maybe the sound is not coming from the car and I decided to continue, pulling out and made it to the drive way and still a lot of noise sounds like big crack sound. I parked and checked the tires nothing. Looked under the front bumper, it looks like something is a little out of shape but it wasn’t clear. Then I realized I can’t drive like this so I started to drive forward the noise was very loud, barely made it to the original parking spot then I got out of the vehicle, checked again and a lot of stuffs hanging near front wheels, looks like something is wrong with the suspension, the car has only 2000 miles on it. The worst part is that there is not a single warning sign on that big screen which supposed to show If something is not in order. If it wasn’t for the unpleasant noise, my 7 month pregnant wife would have been driving in the middle of a freeway in less than 5 minutes. I am still shaking from how close we were to be a real danger to ourselves and to other drivers on the roads. We got lucky that it happened right before we get to the roads. I want a full safety and defects inspections on the 2022 model Y

Jun 10, 2022

I have encountered several "phantom" braking events while driving my Tesla Y in auto-pilot mode, all on the freeway or highway. This most recent event occurred while returning from Las Vegas. In each case, something dark across the road triggered the event. In two cases it was dark asphalt strips that were perpendicular to the highway. in the other case, it was a dark shadow of a bridge across the highway. I assume the car's auto-pilot system thought these things were solid objects and therefore braked. I captured each phantom braking event on the car's built-in camera and am enclosing the screen captures.

Jun 9, 2022

Phantom Braking. I was on Auto Pilot on the freeway traveling at 75 mph. All of a sudden the car did an automatic hard brake and the car started to veer toward the center divider. The car only had 64 miles and was brand new. This was the first time I had used autopilot and had been on the freeway. There was a truck on my right and it was a 2 lane freeway. Nobody has inspected the car.

Jun 4, 2022

On June 3rd I was driving on I-80 heading West towards Chicago. The car was on Auto Pilot (Cruise Control) and traveling at 70 mph. Without any warning or warning lamps/messages the braking system suddenly applied the brakes. I had to quickly apply the accelerator. If a truck or car would have been following me closely they would not have had time to react. I am afraid to use the auto pilot in heavy traffic for fear that I could be rear ended as semis always tailgate in Chicago. I have a service appointment set with Tesla on Monday the 6th of June to have this looked at.

Jun 3, 2022

While driving on the freeway at around 4pm my tesla broke hard on the freeway without me asking it to. The hard braking incident occurred while using autopilot on the freeway.

Jun 1, 2022 Crash

The contact was driving a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while pulling into a driveway, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated, colliding with a vehicle in front. The contact stated that the vehicle then went backward, crossing the road, colliding with the neighbor's garage door, and pushing it to the side as the vehicle stopped once it collided with the parked vehicle in the garage. The contact stated that no warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that she suffered from a headache for a couple of days but no medical attention was sought. No one else was injured. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the Tesla collision center in Austin, TX. The vehicle was towed to the collision center where it was still awaiting diagnoses and repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 400. Consumer's son is filing the complaint on behalf of his mother.*JB

May 28, 2022

We were driving on interstate. We had cruise control engaged but had accelerated to pass a vehicle. The car rapidly braked with no warning, to at least 10 miles lower than our cruise control speed. There were no warnings associated with this rapid braking and there were no risk factors around us at all. This is fortunate, as if someone had been close behind us an accident could have very easily happened. -- This has happened once before, while driving on interstate. Very startling and inexplicable. -- Both times have hit the accelerator to get back to a speed appropriate to flow of traffic.

May 18, 2022

Vehicle braking for no reason when using adaptive cruise control or autopilot. On a 485 mile trip on a 2 lane highway going one direction no oncoming traffic lanes and no vehicles close by vehicle would suddenly just slow down rapidly 20vto 30 moh. It did this 9 times until I just turned off cruise control.

May 14, 2022

In late February we were driving up California State Highway 5 at approximately 70-75 miles per hour. There were no cars within half a mile, and we had turned on adaptive cruise control. Suddenly, there was a strong brake applied for no apparent reason, which was very disturbing for the entire family. We have never turned on adaptive cruise control since. This appears to be an instance of "phantom breaking" according to our online research.

May 13, 2022

Phantom braking while using cruise control.

May 3, 2022

Autopilot Phantom Braking while using cruise control, adaptive speed control. Occurred 9 times on a single drive. Often with no other cars, or anything in sight - in Death Valley to be specific. Instant breaking would occur, sometimes drastic, at times might have brought car to a complete stop if I'd not taken over control. We are now very reluctant to even use cruise control. This occurs with either adaptive speed control or Enhanced Auto-pilot. FSD is not enabled.

Apr 24, 2022

We were on the highway the power went out. The car did not have emergency brake . We could have gotten hit. We finally was able to stop on the shoulder with the driver not letting go off his foot pedal to keep the car from moving. We called Tesla and he wasn’t able to restart the car and yet he said the car has lots of power. The back door doesn’t open in an emergency as well

Apr 21, 2022

Car set at 75 MPH cruise control, brakes unnecessary with no obstructions or danger, and reduces speed to 45 MPH while having adaptive cruise control active. Tesla response = this is a Beta feature. Read your manual. This is incredibly dangerous and a rear end collision waiting to happen. I feel like this is reckless and to just blame it on being Beta is borderline criminal.

Apr 18, 2022

While on cruise control, the car will, out of nowhere, apply the brakes very aggressively ("phantom breaking"). This despite there being no vehicles nearby or any potential threats to safety. This phantom braking is obviously very dangerous and is a reason why I don't really use it anymore. It has happened 3-4 times since I bought my car, and that's despite not really using cruise control very often (for this reason). Clearly there's a software fault of some kind

Apr 16, 2022

On April 15, 2022, I experienced two incidents of sudden braking while in cruise control on a round-trip four-hour drive in my Tesla model Y. I was driving at between 60 and 65 miles an hour on a four-lane road. Between the incidents, I reached my destination and the car was parked for several hours. In each case, there was no car in front of me in my lane, and in one case, as I remember, there were no cars in front of me anywhere near. The car slowed suddenly by 10 to 15 miles an hour, as if I had taken my foot off the accelerator. I applied pressure to the accelerator to return to cruising speed. In each case, the road was dry and the sky was largely cloudless. There was no warning. I bought the car new in January 2022. I have not had the car inspected since the incident. I did investigate on the Internet and learned that there have been many other such incidents with the Tesla Y and 3 models. I understand that the NTSB has an open investigation on the subject. The problem is very serious. Fortunately, there was no one traveling close behind me, or the sudden slowdown might have caused the following car to crash into me.

Apr 4, 2022

while vehicle in autopilot mode and driving on 2 lane highway, vehicle would suddenly brake hard for no reason to do so. The same would occur on the freeway at the beginning of a bend in the road. This phenomenon commonly occurred and I have stopped using the autopilot feature for fear of being hit from behind if the vehicle suddenly braked for no apparent reason. No previous warning lamps or messages when the problem first occurred. I did see messages on 4/1 during my drive that some of the cameras on the car were disabled or blocked and the messages disappeared and reappeared several times for about an hour and then stopped appearing. I have not had these messages reappear since. I have a service appointment scheduled at the end of April.

Apr 3, 2022

Highway driving using cruise control and car suddenly brakes hard. Has happened 3 times. All the incidents seem to be on slight hills with no traffic/nearby cars or road hazards. Took place in remote parts of New Mexico on Interstate 25. The braking is hard enough to cause an accident or to be rear ended due to the fast deceleration.

Apr 2, 2022 Crash

While I am turning to driveway slowly on the brake all of the sudden accelerate d too fast hitting my house wall the went to driveway with very high speed crashing my safely parked Mercedes benz pushed to the garage .the Mercedes is destroyed and the home garage destroyed. Home security cameras have videos and recorded.

Mar 26, 2022

Just got the Model Y and drove from Kansas City to Denver and back to Kansas City. When using the cruise control the car would suddenly break for no apparent reason. The breaking rapidly decreases the speed of the car. This would occur multiple time without any warning or apparent consistency. Talking with other Tesla drivers at charging stations, this seems to be a well-known and common problem. Because of the unpredictable nature of this, I feel it is unsafe to use the cruise control when there are other cars present, especially cars that are behind the vehicle. I have no idea if the break lights come on with the phantom breaking occurs. If they do not, this would make the situation even worse. Cruise control has been around for years--it should work properly and **safely** on such a high-end automobile.

Mar 20, 2022

Phantom breaking several times daily. Now I don’t feel safe using it and I am only able to use the feature when I am sure there is no one behind me. One incentant almost resulted in rear end collision. Car thought something was there and applied break abruptly and person behind was following closely and almost crashed into me. Since then I am not able to trust this feature. A major software flaw for such an expensive car. And a very serious safety concern.

Mar 20, 2022

My car has problems with uncommanded slowdowns while cruise control and/or Autopilot are active. The vehicle will slow down suddenly in any number of predictable and unpredictable situations. The extent of the slowdown is variable as well. It can range from a slight “hiccup” in the speed, which is simply unpleasant, to a significant, rapid decrease. (Like, more than 10mph, very quickly.) This can occur at various times of day, though I don’t drive much at night (it has happened then as well). Driving on any two lane road with a vehicle following at any time is risky and in my opinion hazardous. Particularly if the vehicle following is even remotely close. If the following vehicle isn’t paying attention and the car decides to brake for whatever reason (and apparently there are LOTS) that’s a collision waiting to happen. I have refused to use my car’s cruise control system since shortly after I got the car due to this issue. I try it every once in a while to see if it’s any better, but it hasn’t made it more than 5 miles before another event. Not only is it a terrible experience for passengers, it’s unpleasant to have to keep my foot above the accelerator pedal to react to the stupid braking the car will do. Some of the predictable things that cause braking can include, not limited to - oncoming vehicles on a 2-lane (especially trucks, and almost everything bigger than an F150), many larger mailboxes, and in some parts of my commute - simply nothing at all. I don’t know what the car sees, but it brakes. Less predictable are the times it will brake for shadows. Can’t use cruise control when there’s trees shadowing the road. It is absurd. No vehicle this day and age should risk causing an accident because of random shadows!! To be clear, I’ve never had a problem in a divided highway. Everywhere else, though, forget it.

Mar 19, 2022

On two lane highway semi truck approaching car slammed on brakes. If someone had been behind us we would have caused an accident. Went from 60 to 28 in a flash.

Mar 19, 2022

On interstate. Semi was passing. Cruise control hit the breaks.

Mar 16, 2022

Random, sudden braking while in cruise control (auto pilot mode). There is NO object or other vehicle in the way when this happens. It has happened many times starting in December 2021 in a brand new vehicle and happened most recently 3 days ago. Every time it happens it is scary. Very disturbing and renders cruise control unusable. No word from Tesla that this is fixable or even a priority. Please make Telsa address this serious safety hazard before someone is hurt or killed. Thank you.

I was driving down the highway and as another car in front of me exited the highway my car suddenly and abruptly slowed down even though my lane was clear endangering me and the people behind me. This is at least the fourth time this has happened to me. I find the adaptive cruise control / autopilot to be defective and extremely un safe

Mar 16, 2022

While cruise control is engaged, the vehicle will slam on the brakes when there are no obstacles or vehicles nearby. It happens out of nowhere and without any warning from the vehicle. We live in a more rural area and has happened on the interstate there each time. It is not a highly congested road and each time it has happened, there is nothing around. It has happened on numerous occasions and will take the car from 80 mph and attempt to stop completely. This could easily cause a rear end collision at high speeds if there had been a vehicle in close proximity. This has also happened even with the Automated Emergency Braking disabled.

Mar 14, 2022

While driving at highway speeds the vehicle will brake suddenly. This has happened more than eight times in a single 100 mile trip. Potential for crash at high speeds and very unnerving for the driver and passengers.

Mar 13, 2022

I would like to add a complaint for the phantom breaking while using the Autopilot function of the vehicle. While on a road trip across the country, I've experienced sudden deceleration while Autopilot was engaged. Nothing was impeding the vehicle and the screen did not note any obstacles. The weather was clear and it happened both during the day and at night. This feels extremely dangerous, as my control over the vehicle could be lost under different road conditions.

Mar 11, 2022

When I have Autopilot (adaptive cruise) on, the car will often slow down, sometimes quite abruptly, when there is nothing to slow down for. This is often called Phantom Braking. This can easily put me at risk of getting rear-ended from another car. If I'm on ice or snow it can cause the car to slide and loose control. I have read on the internet and forums of many with 2021 or 2022 Model Y's with the same problem - since the radar was removed on these newer cars. I had a 2020 Model Y previously that had the radar, and I never had this problem. I believe their camera only technology is not enough to suffice and they need the redundancy of both radar and cameras.

Mar 7, 2022

I was driving 55Mph with Autopilot engaged. Without warning the car engaged the brakes aggressively and I was almost rear ended.

Mar 5, 2022

I had cruise control set(Autopilot) and was driving on a two lane highway at night. My car abruptly braked when oncoming traffic was detected. Another oncoming car on the same road, caused my car to abruptly brake again. Then a third car a couple of minutes later caused my car to abruptly brake again. I turned the cruise control(Autopilot) off, to prevent my car from emergency braking. The problem was not reported since I couldn't repeat the issue. It has not been inspected by anyone. No warnings on vehicle.

Mar 3, 2022

Phantom Braking occurred four times in under an hour. Sunny conditions, clear lines.

Feb 27, 2022

on 2/25/22 I was driving on a two lane road. Speed limit was 55. I set driving assistance/adaptive cruise (we do not have the option for fully automated driving) and things were fine for 20 minutes. At some point there was a significant slow down despite the fact that there were no cars in my lane ahead of me. I'm not sure if the car detected another car coming from far away in the other lane or why it was that the car significantly slowed down.

Feb 27, 2022

On the freeway, the car significantly slows when it perceives a hazard, despite no hazard. It’s the phantom breaking and it reduces the speed suddenly and alarmingly, and it renders the cost and benefit of the vehicle much less valuable.

Feb 26, 2022

Phantom breaking happening while using auto pilot (cruise control). It is not speed, weather, terrain, or time of day dependant, and seems to be increasing. It is extremely dangerous in highway driving when speed is 55+. Phantom breaking can be anything from light breaking, to heavy jerking breaking. It has happened on multiple dates dince purchasing car at start of month (2/2022). We have put a service request into Tesla.

Feb 25, 2022

Cruise was control set to 70 mph while I was driving on a highway. There were no cars in front of me, there was a van following behind at a safe distance. As I drove up a hill on the highway my car suddenly decelerated. I did not get to see what my speed reduced to, but it was very dramatic, and I would estimate a slow down of 20 mph in a very short distance.

Feb 24, 2022

The cruise control system malfunctioned during the very first highway use (within several weeks after receiving the vehicle). While driving at a high speed on the open highway, the car would break hard for no clear reason, even when I was not following closely behind any other car. The nearest car in my lane was least 20 car lengths ahead, if at all. This experience was quite traumatizing to both me and my wife, and made us feel unsafe on the highway. Luckily, I follow the speed limits in our state, which reduces the likelihood of a rear-end collision (all others drive at least 10 MPH faster than the limit and zip past me). However, this "phantom braking" (as others have dubbed it) is very hard and sudden, often dropping the car down from 70 to 50 MPH in seconds, without warning. When I contacted Tesla via the app, they texted me to reset the cameras (do a hard reboot). There has been no follow-up by them. I do not think that this has fixed it, but have not given it a full test on a long trip. I wonder if this has something to do with the removal of the radar guidance system by the manufacturer, as this system was discontinued immediately before my Tesla was built. This experience has been so disturbing that we are seriously considering selling the Tesla and buying another brand of EV. It made our initial 200 mile trip in the car one of the worst driving experiences that I have had in decades. I had to hold the steering wheel with an iron grip out of fear for when the car would next capriciously decide to jam on the brakes. Needless to say, I was physically exhausted and emotionally drained by the time that we reached our destination. To specifically address your questions: the car is available for inspection; it put my and my wife's safety at risk; the "dealer" has not specifically confirmed the problem; nobody has inspected the vehicle; there was no warning prior to the problems.

Feb 24, 2022

Driving down the road on Cruise control and car will slam on the brakes and you almost get rear ended every time. Scary to say the least.

Feb 21, 2022

The vehicle will brake while utilizing the AutoSteer and Cruise Control features. I do not have the Advanced AutoPilot feature enabled on my vehicle. The vehicle will brake suddenly at highway speeds requiring me to take control of the vehicle immediately. This is concerning and May result in an rear end collision.

Feb 17, 2022

Phantom braking.

Feb 17, 2022

Vehicle experiences "phantom braking" where during use of TACC or "Autopilot" it will suddenly and drastically slow down without warning. This seems to occur when it falsely detects another vehicle is about to enter the same lane either with oncoming or merging traffic. Seems to be more severe with poor lighting conditions (dawn, dusk, nighttime) and on two-lane undivided roads.

Feb 17, 2022

While using adaptive cruise control, this vehicle intermittently breaks dramatically and swerves on its own without any indication of a possible collision. In fact, most of the time there are no vehicles even within sight of the vehicle. Occurs even on straight roads with no vehicles seen and no one in the area. Friday 02-11-2022 2300hrs - Sat 02-12-2022 0300 hrs. While driving in traffic any vehicles on the right or left are perceived as a threat and the vehicle breaks wildly.

Feb 17, 2022

Phantom Braking While using Autopilot (cruise control), my Tesla Model Y without warning slows the car from the speed limit (ex: 60mpg) down to half the speed or less. This usually occurs when the is a large approaching vehicle (semi or box truck) or when going around corners with a solid background (trees or large rocks). I assume this is because the car believes a collision is imminent and is trying to avoid it. Once the vehicle is past the car continues as if nothing occurred. The first time this happened was very scary and I ad no idea why it happened. Now I keep my foot resting above the gas pedal which keeps the car from severe braking action if you depress pedal right away. I mostly do not use cruise control on two lanes roads with lots of traffic for safety reasons, especially if there's someone following too close. My last trip of 60+ miles this probably occurred half a dozen times until I turned it off.

Feb 17, 2022

At highway speeds using adaptive cruise or autopilot, vehicle suddenly brakes and veers towards the shoulder of the road. This occurs when a large vehicle such as a bus or semi is approaching from the opposite direction. Emergency break came close to causing a rear end collision today 2/17/22. Contacted Tesla service for investigation and repair.

Feb 17, 2022

The vehicle control system intermittently commands hard braking at highway speed when there are no obstacles or vehicles nearby. This sometimes happens repeatedly over a period of several minutes and sometimes doesn't happen for weeks at a time. The braking and deceleration is so rapid as to result in difficulty controlling the car and potential hazard to cars following behind. After repeated "bug reports" to Tesla, nothing has changed. They issue a software update with a new game, but don't fix the hazardous problems.

Feb 13, 2022

I was driving on left lane of divided interstate highway in daytime with great visibility. There were no cars in front of me. I was using Tesla Autopilot with speed limit set to 75mph. Suddenly car applied brakes hard and within second of my reaction time dropped speed to 40mph, before I was able to press accelerator to override braking. Two cars behind me had to slam on the brakes and one had to swerve to avoid rear end collision. This phantom braking in very good conditions was totally unexpected and nearly ended up in high speed rear end collision with my wife and kids in the car.

Feb 9, 2022

Adaptive Cruise Control Random hard braking while in use. Vehicles directly behind need to take corrective action to avoid collision. Not an isolated incident. 75% time I use cruise control, I have a random braking event. No / Maybe. It appears to be a common problem. No No

Feb 7, 2022

Multiple occurrences of phantom braking phenomenon with cruise control engaged. Happened while driving into setting sun or at night. The car seemed to confuse shinny spots in the road (ice patches and tar repairs particularly at the crest of a hill or bridge) as a vehicle and apply the brakes. The braking was usually very aggressive and in one case almost resulted in a high speed rear end. Adjusting control parameters as available form the software did not have any effect. Have not had the car inspected at this point. No warning was given by the system but you can see a phantom image appear on the virtual display during the episode.

Feb 5, 2022

I do not have full self driving on my car. However, the cameras installed are active when I use just normal cruise control. Trying to drive between the Minneapolis area to Pipestone, MN on Christmas day the car several times hit the brakes for me unexpectedly while in cruise control. We were on various roads, mostly at night, and with many times no seeable vehicles nearby. Other times it would be a vehicle coming at us in the proper lane next to us. I cannot use cruise control on this car for fear that a car will rear end me.

Feb 5, 2022

When cruise control (called autopilot) is engaged, the car will slam on the brakes for no apparent reason, endangering everyone around us. Sometimes it happens as frequently as several times a minute. It is particularly bad on 2 lane roads when cresting hills and when trucks are in the opposite lane, but it’s not limited to those situations. When we took the car to the Tesla repair shop, they closed the ticket after informing us that it is a “known software issue” with no resolution currently. So the problem was not fixed, but the ticket was closed anyway.

Feb 4, 2022

When coming home from the dealer, it phantom braked twice. I thought at first maybe it was a shadow across the road. There was a software update the next day, and I hoped it was fixed. It was raining lightly and there wouldn't be any shadows.. a box truck came toward us in the opposite lane and it panic braked. As soon as I turned the cruise control back on, a semi came toward us, and it panic braked again. I've been afraid to use the cruise control since then.. if someone was inattentive behind me, they would probably hit me. Tesla says they have checked the systems on my car remotely and there is nothing wrong with it. (!!) It now has 200 miles on it.

Feb 3, 2022

While driving on freeway car drastically brakes for no apparent reason, almost getting rear ended by car behind me. This happens while cruise control is on, several times! Very dangerous

Feb 3, 2022

The car is experiencing PHANTOM BRAKING. The vehicle incorrectly detects objects and brakes vigorously dropping speed really quickly. If traffic is following we could easily get rear ended. This happened over 10 times in a 100mile journey.

Feb 2, 2022

The car brakes are applied when a truck traveling in opposite lane drives by when the cruise control is engaged. This has also occurred when there was discoloration on the road surface in my travel lane. Fortunately, no auto was following my vehicle or there would have been an accident.

Feb 2, 2022

When on Traffic-aware cruise control, the vehicle suddenly brakes without warning, instantly reducing its highway speed by 7 to 12 mph. It occurs on the interstate, often while passing large vehicles, and on two-lane roads, usually when meeting large vehicles. Recently, as I was moving in front of a vehicle I had just passed, my car slammed on the brakes, causing the other vehicle to brake sharply to avoid hitting me. We have had the vehicle serviced by Tesla twice with no improvement. The service rep indicated it is a known problem that they have not yet been able to solve (unlike the manufacturers of my prior six vehicles with adaptive cruise control). This is a life-endangering fault and needs to be fixed. It is as dangerous as the rolling-stop issue that prompted a recall.

Feb 2, 2022

The Tesla Model Y and I believe the Model 3 have a problem with phantom breaking. The problem occurs when we set the auto to cruise control on a two-lane highway. When we meet a large object (semi, garbage truck, propane truck) the car breaks and swerves to the right. This can create a very dangerous situation. The first couple of times this happened we almost lost control of the car. There is no warning before this happens. This problem can be easily replicated on cars without radar. It took us some time to determine what was causing the problem. We picked up our new Tesla Model last week and were not made aware of what would happen if we used cruise control on a two-lane road. We have since discovered that this is a known problem in the Tesla community and has been known for some time.

Feb 1, 2022

With AutoPilot engaged both during the day and at night, though more frequently at night, and driving on two lane highways, the car automatically brakes sometimes very hard causing your neck to snap forward, whenever it detects oncoming traffic. This is amplified at dusk and at night. There is no warning or time to override this. Making the vehicle dangerous to driver, occupants, or cars travelling behind the Tesla. Tesla claims that this is a known issue, but other brands with similar safety mechanisms do not have this "Phantom Braking' condition.

Jan 31, 2022

Model Y consistently slams on the brakes while on standard cruise control mode despite there being no cars or hazards around the vehicle. It happens at highway speeds and is very frightening and it’s worrisome that it will one day cause a major accident if someone is ever following too close.

Jan 24, 2022

AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING with Adaptive cruise control on. I was driving with adaptive cruise control on, at about 50 mph on a two lane road. the first experience I had was at dusk on a straight road when oncoming traffic with headlights seemed to trigger the braking system changing the speed of the car by about 10 mph repeatedly but not every car or truck. When I entered a curvy road section, it didn't trigger the brakes. The second experience was around noonish on a straight road, a large oncoming truck seemed to trigger the Automatic emergency braking and brought me suddenly to almost a stop from 50 mph. I looked behind me and saw no one close to rear ending me but it was scary to almost stop in the middle of my lane. no confirmation by dealer or service center, no inspection by others, no messages or other symptoms prior to the failure. No chimes or warning when it happened. The first experience appeared January 14, 2022 with approximately 350 miles on the new car. The second experience happened January 19th with approximately 450 miles on the car.

Nov 24, 2021

While on cruise control the car brakes aggressively with oncoming traffic and when passing large vehicles on the highway. No way to disable this feature to use a standard cruise control. This seems to be a problem mostly with large vehicles on the road.

Nov 22, 2021

When using cruise control on normal two way traffic roads during the day or at night: the car will brake aggressively because of proper oncoming traffic from the other lane. The system has been very poorly designed such that it only works on wide separated highways and there is no way to switch off this feature. I have already had two near accidents where the vehicle behind me didn’t expect my car to slow down so quickly for no reason. This is extremely dangerous.
