What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Response: Frame, Suspension, Airbags / Yes it is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Response: Safety was put at risk due to frame & suspension failure due to severe rust. Also due to failure of deployment of AirBags. Rusted Frame Failure subsequently caused safety of Injured Party and other motorists to be at risk due to the Injured Party’s 4Runner to dart across oncoming lane of traffic with no warning other than a swaying motion felt immediately before losing control. Once the Injured Party lost control of the 4Runner it crossed into oncoming traffic, progressing into the drainage ditch on the oncoming traffic side of highway. Once the 4Runner impacted the drainage ditch at a 90° angle, the 4Runners momentum dispersed by causing the 4Runner to overturn 3 times landing on its wheels in the adjoining field. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Repaonse: Independent Service Center has confirmed the problem with the Rusted Frame, Rusted Suspension, and Air Bag failure. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Response : Yes Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Repaint: No warning lamps prior to failure. Symptoms indicative of failure were an unknown minor swaying sensation while driving. Injured party was under the impression that there may have been a tire low on air, which was discovered to be incorrect later.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in for service, the independent mechanic discovered rust on the front driver's side subframe. Additionally, the subframe had developed holes due to rust. The cause of the failures was not yet determined, and the vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 120,000.

2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 - Frame rust: currently not drivable due to complete breakage from the rust. Driving 2 hours home on the highway I almost lost control, pressing/releasing the brake and/or gas pulls the steering side to side and sways the truck (fish tail) due to damage from the frame rust/breaking. There is no control of the rear end. Truck was in great condition prior to the frame snapping. Vehicle has been inspected by multiple mechanics (including Firestone, Welding/fabricating Auto Repair shops and small owned mechanic shops), possibly won’t be able to weld due to the amount of rust. Firestone won’t perform any service if the vehicle needs to go in the air (tires, oil..etc) due to frame rust. This has been a huge problem with Toyota, they addressed other models around the same year but excluded the 4Runner for unknown reasons. The dealership will not address the issue unless instructed by corporate. This problem jeopardized my safety and the safety of others around while I was driving at highway speeds, there was no warning when it occurred. Vehicle is available for inspection any time, as it currently is not going anywhere without a tow.

Rusty frame undercarriage. It’s not going to get any better due to the fact I have to drive on hwy 80 with all the construction, that’s a hazard itself, potholes everywhere that puts stress on your frame and the salt every winter.

UNKNOWN: Excessive frame rust. frame is excessively rusting to the point where the brakes and suspensions is connected to the frame has been compromised. brake lines rusted to the point of failure, thus almost causing a wreck. Vehicle is now parked due to safety concerns involving the excessive rusting that is happening to the frame and any components that is attached to the frame.

Cars frame is rotting out to the point it is not safe to drive. I was told being in a collision could cause catastrophic failure and the car is just turning 20 years old with 125,000 miles. Can’t get my money back and the car is otherwise is excellent condition.

Dealership advised waste of money to align new tires just purchased, unable to even do alignment and it was dangerous. Now what is to be done? This is my daily driver for work. How did this happen that its unsafe and dangerous to drive.

The rear tailgate window shattered while vehicle was in driveway as soon as it was turned off. Before it shattered there was an odor of something like plastic burning. Fortunately no one was hurt by the exploding bits of glass. The sound the breaking glass make was loud and startled the passengers. Good thing the vehicle was not in motion on the street or highway. On the internet I saw where other people shared the same problem on their Toyota 4Runner. Then I saw that Toyota had put out, TSB-0189-17, which stated exactly what happened to my 4Runner. Due to this possibly dangerous incident this should be upgraded to a vehicle safety recall.

2004 4Runner rear hatch glass imploded with rear defroster on while driving and glass shattered all inside the vehicle in the back behind rear passenger seat. The loud sound when it imploded sounded like we had got shot at and scared all four of us in the vehicle thinking we were shot at. We pulled the vehicle over at the nearest pull over while driving on a coastal two lane road. We searched for any possible bullets. Did not find any and had to clean up as much possible of shattered glass that had covered all of our clothing and belongings. Had no materials to cover the rear broken window and had to continue our drive to meet family members to attend an early event at 9:00 am.

Unknown: we were on [XXX] when the car went out of control. It first spun one way and then the other way and then we hit the concrete abutment where the guardrail connects to it. We hit it head on. It was as if we were on ice or oil, unable to gain control or brake. We checked the road and it was dry. Other cars were going by with no problem. The airbags didn’t deploy. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH over a bump in the road, she heard an abnormally loud sound and the windshield shattered without impact and the sunroof panel loosened. The contact also stated that the vehicle was shaking uncontrollably. The contact stated that the traction control warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that after the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a routine oil change, his mother was made aware that the subframe had excessive corrosion, and that the subframe needed to be replaced. The contact owns a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in for routine service, it was discovered that the subframe had sustained severe rusting and corrosion. The contact indicate that there was a hole going through the subframe while the vehicle was being lifted at the service center. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was no longer covered under the Manufacturer’s Extended Warranty coverage for the failure. Frame and body prematurely and aggressively rusted despite constant care and upkeep. Toyota recalled the exact frame on their Tacoma of the same years and did not recall the 4runner frames. It’s criminal and dangerous to the user and other vehicles on the road.

-The frame is rotted out - If the frame were to break, which my mechanic i saying is very possible, a massive incident could occur - It has been confirmed by an independent service center - It has not been inspected by the manufacturer but is an astonishingly common issue Toyota is very aware of that they continue to ignore. - There were not indicators notifying me of the issue. I wanted to replace my suspension and the mechanic advised not doing so because of the rot.

The frame is damaged from excessive corrosion. The rear cross member that supports the trailer hitch and rear bumper is almost non-existent, which could result in the loss of the trailer being towed, and it will reduce the truck's rear impact resistance. The front right lower control arm has a 2'" x 3/8" lateral hole from corrosion, which could result in a catastrophic failure of the right front suspension system. The longitudinal frame members are compromised by corrosion which has penetrated through the steel in various locations. The front cross-frame member that supports the radiator is severely corroded. The frame to body mounts are showing signs of excessive corrosion which could result in the separation of the the body from the frame in an accident.

The frame is showing significant rust damage throughout the frame. A hole was punctured in the passenger side while using the factory bottle jack. This could have ended badly if someone was underneath when this happened. Furthermore there is deterioration on the front and rear sections that are questionable as to their integrity and resilience in the event of a crash. It is generally accepted by other owners of this generation that lack of adequete drainage throughout the frame has led to water pooling inside and creating excessive rust issues from the inside out.

We took our 2004 4Runner for annual vehicle inspection and the service provider told us the vehicle would not pass safety inspection due to the excessive rusting on the steel frame and the suspension of the vehicle. Welding and patchwork will not fix this issue. My husband depends on this vehicle to work. The attached pictures give a small window into the extent of the damage. There is no current recall for this vehicle and year, but similar Toyota trucks from the same time frame have been recalled for the same exact issue. The entire frame needs to be replaced or worst case scenario, the vehicle is no longer usable. Toyota needs to remedy this issue for their loyal customers immediately.

The body frame is the problem, it has rust all around, the radiator supports are all rusted out almost hanging, front side of the frame and rear side are clearly rusted. Radiator could fall any time. The problem was confirmed by auto shop and inspection shop (independent service center). Vehicle has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to frame failure, for now.

The frame of my 2004 Toyota 4Runner, which is manufactured by Dana Holding Corporation, is the primary support structure of my vehicle, to which every piece is attached. It is the main protection against injury in a car accident. The excessive rust corrosion of the frame on my Toyota 4Runner greatly hinders the safety, crash-worthiness, and stability of my automobile, as transmission mounts, essential suspension components, and engine mounts are attached to it. Consequently, as it becomes affected by rust, it is significantly more prone to failing to protect me, the driver, in a car accident, and, furthermore, it can also cause serious accidents in and of itself. Depending on the gravity of the impact, not only myself but my passengers (my young children) can experience a wide range of injuries and even death. Because the excessive rusting of the undercarriage of my Toyota 4Runners can cause plenty of vehicle components to fail, there can be multiple causes for an accident. The following are the most common injuries people sustain after a car accident: traumatic brain injuries severe whiplash fractured bones lacerations spinal cord damages paralysis loss of limbs permanent scarring concussions internal bleeding head injuries face injuries compound fractures soft tissue damage back injuries dislocated bones knee injuries shoulder injuries herniated disc psychological injuries Unlike in the case of other models of your vehicles, Toyota Motor Corporation refused to address the problem of 4Runners. Interestingly, your company faced a previous lawsuit in 2016 concerning the same rusting problem in the Tacomas, Sequoias, and Tundras, and it was settled for $3.4 billion in 2020. Nonetheless, your company did not admit it manufactured defective vehicles. According to documentation, Toyota Motor Corporation had been aware of the issue of premature rusting of the undercarriage of their 4Runners for a long time but continued to manufacture and sell defective vehicles.

The body is excessively rusted through. Other vehicles this age or older do not have any where near the amount of excessive rust and holes. Parts have fallen off. Anytime the shop has to work on the truck, there is a pile of rust under it. Broken off rust poses a hazard to owner and others on the road as debris. Known issue on an uncoated frame.

Unaware of frame rusting issues to vehicle.. Observed rust through carpet on driver side. Upon research safety is a concern. Due to high volume of this type of issuing occurring a safety recall should be issued. It was not verbalized at time of purchase the make and model of vehicle have these type of issues. Especially, when this issues had been occurring prior to purchase of this vehicle.

The frame is rusted through on this 4Runner. Same frame as the tacomas that were recalled and I’m wondering why Toyota wouldn’t recall THE SAME EXACT FRAME WITH MAJOR RUST ISSUES on a different platform. This truck is not abused so it’s very frustrating to see it falling apart at the frame when everything else is intact and solid. The rot on this frame is inevitable. I’m going to be very upset if I have to pay out of my own pocket for something that should be 100% covered under recall. This is a huge safety hazard and could lead to serious injury or death.

Mechanic said he could push his finger through some of the rusted frame members. Extensive frame rust/corrosion on at least 3 sides of the vehicle and sagging frame in the front per mechanic.

Original owner of 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 (purchased February 23, 2004). Garage kept and approximately 125,000 miles. Vehicle was taken to mechanic for exhaust issues and reported the flange had rusted and disintegrated providing $2300 quote to repair. Taken to a second shop that indicated rust on frame and sub-frame was significant and would not accommodate an exhaust repair. Also stated that bolts and supports for radiator and gas tank were severely rusted. Estimates the car to be road worthy for an additional 3-6 months.

My Frame is a rusted mess. The entire frame is experiencing rust issues. My rear sway bar rusted off and broke into pieces (1/15/21). Now my exhaust pipe has fell off the muffler due to rust (7/21/21). My brake calipers have been very badly rusted as well as the pieces that hold my shocks and suspension in place. It has been progressively getting worse over the past 3-4 years. I feel like this has now become a safety issue and I'm not sure if it's safe to drive. It may be a risk to myself and other drivers on the road. My mechanic has told me that it will not improve and he thinks that the frame and other parts should be recalled. I have plenty of photos if needed. Please help me before something goes wrong.

My 2004 Toyota 4Runner has holes multiple inches in diameter rusted completely through the frame in multiple locations including where frame rails meet and are welded. This 4Runner is very clean and well kept in a climate controlled garage. The 4Runner was somehow not captured in the class-action law suit against Toyota that included the Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota has long known the frames are prone to excessive, premature rust corrosion because the frames were not properly prepared and treated against rust corrosion when they were manufactured and yet it has failed to offer significant help to owners. The excessive rust damage on my Toyota 4Runner compromises the vehicles safety, stability and crash worthiness because important suspension components, engine mounts, transmission mounts and body mounts anchor to the vehicles frames. I have spoke with a local Toyota dealer who stated they would inspect the vehicle with a diagnostic fee of $139 but that Toyota would not help with repair or replacement of the frame. There is no need to inspect the vehicle as I have multiple pictures illustrating the magnitude of the rust damage to the frame including several holes multiple inches in diameter in critical locations of the frame. I have attached several photos of the rust damage as well as photos of the body for reference to how well kept the vehicle is.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, there was a loud sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The contact looked under the vehicle and saw several holes throughout the subframe of the vehicle due to rust. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with the subframe needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that the Vin was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

On April 14, 2019, I was informed by an auto repair shop that my 2004 Toyota 4Runner showed signs of excessive rusting on the front end of the frame at the bumper and radiator support. The repair shop owner/mechanic indicated the bumper may eventually fall off. At the time, the odometer reading was only 117,834 miles. On June 22, 2021, I took the truck in to the Toyota dealer where I purchased it to have the regular oil change done and requested that they inspect the frame during the routine "Multi-Point Inspection." On this visit to the Toyota dealer, the truck's odometer reading was 141,595. The mechanic pointed out the more severe areas of rusting, which included the "Front right bumper support crumple zone area, also right side top under pass front seat area very thin." He indicated that the left side of the frame, although not as advanced as the right side, was also rusting, because water from wet roadways accumulates within the frame and does not drain. I was not able to take photos of the top under pass due to lack of access. However, the mechanic had me run my fingers along the top of the frame. The frame was so corroded that it was crumbling, and my fingers went right through the frame. Some areas already had holes from the corrosion. I have included both the repair shop and Toyota dealer's observation reports as well as the photos of the front end of the frame and the right side under pass. It was not possible to take photos of the top of the right side under pass, which the mechanic pointed out was the most affected. The vehicle is available for inspection if necessary.

On April 17, 2019, I was informed by P.R. Auto Repair that my 2004 Toyota 4Runner showed signs of excessive rusting on the front end of the frame at the bumper support and radiator support. This observation was noted by the auto repair shop's owner. It is important to point out that my truck had only 117,834 miles on its odometer and should not already have had such a serious rusting problem. My truck was in for replacement of rear pads and rotors and was on a lift when the problem was noted. At the time the problem was being pointed out to me, a portion of the rusted metal in that area came right off. I was told that eventually the bumper could fall off and potentially lead to increased more dangerous problems. I have taken my 4Runner to A-1 Toyota where I purchased the vehicle for the regularly scheduled oil changes. "A-1 Toyota Quality Vehicle Inspections" were conducted each time with issues that required further attention noted in the report, but the rusting problem has never been included in the reports or pointed out to me. The truck now has just over 141,240 miles on its odometer and the corrosion problem has become significantly worse and my safety and the safety of others has become a growing concern to me. I have included a scanned copy of the April 19, 2019 invoice/receipt from the P.R. Auto Repair shop. The observation of the problem is noted under the Instructions section. I have also included two photos (one of the left side view and one of the right side view). The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I understand that there is currently an ongoing investigation related to excessive rusting on Toyota 4Runners' frames. It is my hope that my 2004 Toyota 4Runner can be recalled for this problem as were other makes of Toyota vehicles that suffered the same problem before mishaps or tragedies occur as a result.

The frame is rusted very badly and may need to be salvaged. Many of the other Toyota vehicles in this same year which have the same frame have already been recalled. Why not the 4runners? I've owned many other early 2000's vehicles and none have had this bad of rust. Simple not acceptable and not safe!

OUR 2004 TOYOTA FORERUNNER WITH V6 ENGINE WAS PURCHASED AS A USED VEHICLE IN 2019 WITH 106,000 MILES ON IT. SINCE THEN, IT HAS DEVELOPED MORE AND MORE AREAS OF RUST ON THE FRAME DESPITE OUR EFFORTS TO MITIGATE THIS ISSUE. WE HAVE HAD TO REPAIR THE FRAME, SUSPENSION, BRAKES, AND WHEEL BEARINGS. WE CONTINUOUSLY INSPECT THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND CONTINUE TO DISCOVER MORE AND MORE AREAS OF SIGNIFICANT RUST/DETERIORATION DESPITE EFFORTS TO CLEAN, TREAT (WITH PAINT, RUST INHIBITORS, WELDING REPAIRS). WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THIS DETERIORATION WILL SOON RESULT IN A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND POSSIBLE ACCIDENT RESULTING IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, INJURY, OR DEATH.

THE ORIGINAL FRAME ON OUR CAR IS ALMOST COMPLETELY RUSTED. THERE ARE HOLES IN THE FRAME AND COMPLETE CORROSION ALONG THE SIDE BEAMS. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD WHILE DRIVING. THERE IS SO MUCH RUST ON THE UNDERBODY. ALL PARTS ARE COMPLETELY STOCK AND ORIGINAL. THIS SHOULD NOT BE A PROCESS WE HAVE TO PAY FOR AS IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN THAT TOYOTA IS COMPLETELY OVERLOOKING. THE HOLES IN THE FRAME ARE ABOUT A BASEBALL SIZE WHOLE. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO OVER THREE MECHANICS AND A BODY SHOP RECOMMENDED FROM TOYOTA AND EACH OF THEM SAID THE FRAME IS ALMOST ENTIRELY UNSAFE.

I HAVE ANOTHER 4 RUNNER WITH A HEAVILY RUSTED FRAME. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT A UNSEEN FAILURE CAN OCCUR WHILE TOWING A 4300 POUND CAMER OR WHILE DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS. I'M NOT ONLY CONCERNED FOR MY WIFE AND I BUT ALSO FOR OUR GRANDKIDS THAT VISIT US MONTHLY. HERE IS THE ACTUAL FAILURE. MY WIFE CAME IN LAST THURSDAY AND ASKED ME WHAT IS THAT CAR PART THAT FELL OFF? I WENT OUT TO CHECK AND FOUND THE RIGHT BODY MOUNT LAYING THERE. THE BOLT THAT HOLDS IT HAD ROTTED IN TWO BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER RUBBER PIECES. THE BOLT AND NUT ON THE BOTTOM LOOKS GOOD SO THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A IMMINENT FAILURE. I'M CONCERNED THAT OTHER MORE SERIOUS FAILURES CAN OCCUR.

THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY DETERIORATING AND FLAKING APART. THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WE PURCHASED THIS ONE OWNER VEHICLE FOR OUR SON. WE OWNED A TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT GAVE US SAFE RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION FOR OUR FAMILY FOR MANY YEARS AND THOUGHT THIS 4RUNNER WOULD BE A SAFE AND RELIABLE VEHICLE FOR OUR SON TO GO OFF TO COLLEGE. THE RUST APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM THE INSIDE OUT SO IT IS TOUGH TO IDENTIFY ADDITIONAL AREAS THAT RUST IS AFFECTING AND FURTHER DEGRADING THE SAFETY AND STRENGTH OF THE FRAME. MECHANICS ADVISED ME OF NUMEROUS OTHER MODELS FROM TOYOTA WITH SAME ISSUE, UPON CALLING THEIR HEADQUARTERS THEY DENY ANY ISSUE WITH 4 RUNNERS WHEN I TOLD THEM THE ARE ALL SAME PERIOD AND OBVIOUSLY SAME MANUFACTURER MAKING YOUR CHASSIE PARTS WHICH ARE DEFECTIVE.

THE TAILGATE OF THE SUV OPENS IT WHILE DRIVING. THE TAILGATE CLOTHING LATCH SOUNDS AS IF IT HAS CLOSED, BUT HAS NOT. THIS RESULTS IN THE TAIL GATE OPENING UP WHILE DRIVING. THIS BEGAN AFTER HAVING A REPAIR ON THE BACK WINDOW SYSTEM, THAT WAS A RECALL FROM TOYOTA. ALSO, THERE'S NO PROTECTION FROM THE EDGE OF THE TAILGATE RUSTING. I'VE BEEN TOLD THIS IS IN EVERY TOYOTA 4RUNNER FROM 2004. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR MANY YEARS FOR ME, BUT I DID NOT KNOW THAT THERE WAS A WAY TO REPORT IT.

I STARTED HEARING A NOISE LIKE FRICTION COMING FROM UNDER THE CAR AND FEELING IT THROUGH THE STEERING WHILE DRIVING. IT WOULD COME AND GO AND WITHIN A WEEK THE CAR WAS UNDRIVABLE. JUST AFTER EXITING THE INTERSTATE AND ON A SIDE ROAD, MY BRAKES WENT OUT AND THERE WAS AN INCREDIBLY LOUD METAL ON METAL GRINDING NOISE. I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY AND HAD THE CAR TAKEN ON A ROLLBACK TO MY MECHANIC. WHEN HE PUT IT ON THE LIFT HE SAID THAT THE FRAME WAS SO RUSTED THAT IT WAS UNDRIVEABLE. MOST EVERYTHING THAT WAS ATTECHED TO THE FRAME WAS COMING LOOSE, LIKE THE BRAKE CALIPERS, COVER OVER THE GAS TANK, AXLES, ETC. THE FRAME IS SO RUSTED THAT HE COULD LITERALLY PUT HIS HAND THROUGH IT. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD OUTCOME IF I HAD STILL BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN IT ALL BROKE LOOSE.

UPON PRE-INSPECTION OF MY PERSONAL VEHICLE FOR PURCHASE I FOUND THAT BOTH REAR CORNERS OF THE FRAME WERE TOTALLY ROTTED OUT. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, AFTER REMOVAL OF THE REAR BUMPER, IT TURNED OUT THAT THE RUST EXTENDED ALMOST ENTIRELY THROUGH THE CORNERS OF THE FRAME. THERE WAS ALSO A MAJOR HOLE IN THE FRAME WHERE THE FACTORY WELDS WERE CONJOINING PIECES OF THE FRAME RIGHT WHERE THE EXHAUST BRACKET MOUNTS TO THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE INTERIOR FACING OF THE FRAME. ON THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE THERE WAS A MASSIVE RUST HOLE EXTENDING ALONG THE RIGHT FRONT FACTORY WELDS CONNECTING THE RIGHT FRONT BODY MOUNT TO THE FRAME. THE REAR ROTTED CORNERS OF THE FRAME UNDERNEATH THE BUMPER AND RIGHT FRONT BODY MOUNT WERE REPAIRED AT MY FATHER'S AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE STATION BY MY DAD WHO HAS MORE THAN 50 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. WITH A VERMONT STATE INSPECTION LICENSE IT WAS CONCERNING TO HIM TO SEE THE ROTTING AND RUSTING CENTRALIZED AROUND THE FACTORY WELDS, AND OCCURRING WHERE THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE IS MOUNTED TO THE FRAME AND THE REAR BUMPER IS PREVENTING SERIOUS INJURY FROM IMPACT DUE TO A POTENTIAL COLLISION.

I WAS SHOCKED AND UPSET AS I'VE ONLY USED A TRUSTED TOYOTA PROFESSIONAL MECHANICS AND SOMEHOW THEY SEEM TO HAVE OVERLOOKED A FRAME THAT WAS COMPLETELY RUSTING OUT AND THEREFORE PUTTING MY LIFE AND MY CHILDREN'S LIVES IN HARMS WAY. I CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS TO NO AVAIL, THEY CLAIMED THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO AS THERE ARE NO RECALLS. THEY DECLINED THE REPAIR WORK AND TOLD ME THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND HAVE TAKEN GREAT CARE OF THE VEHICLE AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE ATTACHED PHOTO THE ORIGINAL PAINT IS STILL GLOSSY NO RUST ON THE OUTER BODY BUT EXTENSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME AND UNDERBODY. THE PASSENGER SIDE TOW LOOP THAT WAS WIELDED TO THE FRAME HAS BROKEN OFF WITH VERY LITTLE FORCE. NOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THE 4RUNNER IS HIT HEAD-ON. WILL THE FRAME CRUMBLE LIKE THE FRAME IS DOING WHERE THE TOW HOOK WAS LOCATED? THE SEAMS ON THE FRAME HAVE SOME MUCH RUST THAT IT IS NO LONGER SAFE FOR MY WIFE AND KIDS TO DRIVE.

EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST I HAVE A 2004 4RUNNER THAT HAS SO MUCH LIFE LEFT EXCEPT FOR THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE RUNS IMPECCABLY, BUT THE FRAME, THE VERY FOUNDATILN ON WHICH IT SITS, IS CRUMBLING. THE FRAME OF MY 4RUNNER HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT WHERE MY MECHANIC RECOMMENDED I REPLACE THE FRAME BEFORE TOWING ANYTHING WITH THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR CORNER OF THE FRAME WAS COMPLETELY GONE (NO 90 DEGREE ANGLE TO THE FRAME THERE - THE WHOLE CORNER HAD RUSTED AWAY). MY MECHANIC FABRICATED A NEW CORNER, BUT THEN TOLD ME HE WOULDN'T TOW EVEN THE SMALLEST OF TRAILERS BECAUSE HE WOULD EXPECT THE FRAME TO BE RIPPED OFF THE CAR UNDER ANY LOAD. THE CROSS-MEMBER NEAR THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE IS SO FRAGILE FROM RUSTING, I COULD TEAR IF OFF WITH MY BARE HANDS. 1/3 OF THE WAY FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE HEADING TOWARD THE REAR IS ANOTHER PART OF THE FRAME THAT'S RUSTED ALL THE WAY THROUGH. THE MECHANIC SAID IF THE FRAME ISN'T REINFORCED, IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED IN ITS ENTIRETY. NO INCIDENT OCCURRED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BEFORE USE, BUT IF I HADN'T INSPECTED IT AND WENT THROUGH WITH MY PLANS TO GIVE THE CAR TO A FRIEND FOR HIM TO TOW A TRAILER WITH FURNITURE FROM PA TO KY, WHO KNOWS WHAT TRAGEDY MAY HAVE OCCURRED.

MULTIPLE FORUM SEARCHES AND PICTURES FROM OTHER INDIVIDUALS REINFORCES MY THOUGHTS. I JUST HAD THE CV BOOTS AND SWAY BAR BUSHINGS REPLACED THIS PAST SPRING AND SUMMER. I HAVE THE RECORDS FOR THESE PARTICULAR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR. MY SERVICE MECHANIC MENTIONED THERE IS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE FRAME/ CHASSIS. ON SEPTEMBER 7, THE MECHANIC AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP SHOWED ME AGAIN THE EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. IT IS SO SEVERE, ONE OF THE LOOPS FOR TOWING THE TRUCK IN THE FRONT OF THE FRAME JUST BROKE OFF. I ATTACHED THE PICTURE OF THE BROKEN HOOK/LOOP IN THIS DOCUMENT. THE TRUCK HAS 102,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS MOSTLY IN THE GARAGE IF NOT BEING USED. I UNDERSTAND THAT OTHER MODELS IN THE SAME YEARS LIKE THE TOYOTA TACOMA & TOYOTA SEQOIUA HAVE THE SAME EXCESSIVE RUST BUT THERE IS AN ALREADY RECALL PROGRAM FOR THESE MODELS. DO THE 4 RUNNER FROM THE SAME YEARS HAVE THE SAME FRAMES. WHY IS THERE NO RECALL FOR THE 4 RUNNER FOR THE EXCESSIVE RUST ISSSUE WHICH CAN BE A SAFETY PROBLEM FOR THE DRIVER AND THE PASSENGERS? THE MECHANIC DOES NOT RECCOMEND ME DRIVING THIS CAR DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE RUST. THE MECHANIC WARNED ME THAT RUST IS SO EXCESSIVE THAT MY RADIATOR CAN JUST FALL OFF BECAUSE THE PART OF THE FRAME HOLDING IT IN PLACE IS SO CORRODED FROM RUST. WE PURCHASED A 2004 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER IN MAY OF 2017. THE DEALER INFORMED US THAT HIS MECHANIC HAD CHECKED THE VEHICLE OVER AND WAS IN GOOD SHAPE AND SHOULD LAST US A LONG TIME. ON AUGUST 14, 2018 I DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES AWAY TO HAVE DIAGNOSTICS RUN ON IT FOR AN ISSUE WITH THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE. AFTER PLACING THE VEHICLE ON A LIFT AND CHECKING IT OUT, HE HAD US STEP INTO THE SHOP WITH THE VEHICLE STILL ON THE LIFT TO SHOW US WHAT HE FOUND. THE FRAME HAD MULTIPLE RUST HOLE THROUGH THE FRAME AND ONE RUNNING VERTICALLY ALONG THE TRANSMISSION FRAME BRACKET. IT WAS SO BAD HE MADE US SIGN A WAIVER RELEASING THE DEALERSHIP FROM LIABILITY BEFORE HE WOULD LET US LEAVE WITH IT. THIS IS A LIMITED EDITION, 2004 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER WITH A LITTLE OVER 156,000 MILES ON IT. I FEEL THAT TOYOTA SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS AS APPARENTLY THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. WE HAVE HAD OUR GRANDCHILDREN IN THIS VEHICLE AND THE FRAME COULD HAVE COLLAPSED AT ANYTIME CAUSING DEATH OR INJURY TO ANY OR ALL OF US. WE BOUGHT IT BECAUSE OF TOYOTA'S REPUTATION WHICH AT THIS POINT IS NOT WORTHY OF ANYTHING WHEN THEY DON'T STAND BEHIND IT. THIS ISSUE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED BEFORE THE FRAMES REACH THIS POINT OF BEING BEYOND REPAIR.

BOUGHT 4TH GENERATION 4RUNNER IN 1-15 FROM DEALER AFTER OWNING 4 PRIOR 3RD GENERATION ONES AND THIS ONE IS PLAGUED WITH EXCESSIVE RUST BEYOND NORMAL WEAR IN FRAME (SOME HOLES), SUSPENSION, STEERING RACK AND SHAFT, BRAKE COMPONENTS, VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING STEEL UNDER THE BODY HAS RUSTED EXCESSIVELY WHILE BODY REMAINS RUST FREE. I KNOW 95-03 TACOMAS AND TUNDRAS WERE UNDER FRAME AND BRAKE LINE RECALL DUE TO SAME ISSUE BUT FROM THE HUGE NUMBER OF POSTINGS ON INTERNET OF PROBLEM BEING JUST AS BAD IF NOT WORSE IN 3RD AND 4TH GENERATION 4RUNNER. YES THE FRAMES WERE A DIFFERENT STYLE BUT THE FRAMES IN THESE 4RUNNERS ARE EVEN WORSE AS PROBLEMS WITH RUST DUE TO DESIGN ARE EATING THEIR WAY FROM INSIDE OUT MAKING IT MORE OF A SILENT KILLER AS IT GOES UNNOTICED UNTIL RUST BREACHES ALL THE WAY THRU FRAME AND BY THAT POINT IT IS NOT ONLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE, IT HAS BEEN UNSAFE TO DRIVE FOR A LONG TIME BEFORE GETTING TO THAT POINT. THIS IS MAJOR PROBLEM AS NOTED IN 1000'S IF NOT MORE NOTED CASES ON INTERNET FORUMS AND TOYOTA REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY LEAVING ALL THESE PEOPLE STUCK WITH THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES AND KIDS THAT THEY PUT IN THESE POTENTIAL DEATH TRAPS AT RISK OF FRAME, BRAKE, STEERING, SUSPENSION FAILURES THAT COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, ACCIDENTS, AND DEATHS. THE ENGINE OIL COOLER AND RADIATOR SUPPORTS HAVE RUSTED THROUGH. THE EXHAUST RUSTED OFF THE TRUCK IN 2010 AS WELL. CURRENTLY THERE IS EXTENSIVE CORROSION ON THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK AND THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THESE ISSUES APPEARED IN 2010 AND I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING THEM EVER SINCE. MECHANICALLY THE TRUCK RUNS GREAT, NEVER A PROBLEM, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE'S FRAME IS DISINTEGRATING DUE TO CORROSION.

ALL FRAME ATTACHED UNDERCARRIAGE COMPONENTS ARE SO RUSTED THAT REMOVAL OF PARTS IS IS IMPOSSIBLE. CANNOT FIND ANY WELDING SHOPS THAT ARE WILLING TO WELD THE FRAME TO KEEP IT FROM TOTAL FAILURE IN THE FUTURE. THE BODY PANELS ARE RUST FREE. I BELIEVE THE VEHICLE'S FRAME SHOULD HAVE LASTED A LOT LONGER THAN 11 YEARS . DEALERSHIP WILL NOT REPLACE OR WARRANTY THE EXCESSIVE RUST PROBLEM. THEY DID NOT MENTION THE FRAME RUSTING OR THE LIFETIME EXHAUST RUSTING. THEY DID NOT MENTION THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH 4RUNNERS. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD ISSUES WITH THAT SERVICE DEPT. BUT THE ONLY OTHER TOYOTA IS WORSE. THIS ISSUE NEEDS SERIOUS RECALL ASAP. I THINK THESE TRUCKS WILL START FAILING AND CAUSING DEATHS SOON. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THE REPAIR WOULD BE A COMPLETE FRAME REPLACED AT A COST OF $18-20K. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY VEHICLE METICULOUSLY THROUGHOUT IT'S LIFE WITH MOSTLY DEALERSHIP MAINTENANCE AND AT NO TIME DID ANY MECHANIC OR SERVICE DEPARTMENT MENTION EXCESSIVE RUST OR HOLES IN THE FRAME. I SPOKE TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE RECALL PROGRAMS FOR TACOMA AND SEQUOIA VEHICLES DUE TO SIMILAR FRAME RUSTING PROBLEMS, THEY ARE UNWILLING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ANY FLAW EXISTS WITH EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE 4RUNNER MODELS. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT TOYOTA HAS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM RELATED TO THIS GENERATION OF 4RUNNERS, AND SINCE THEY ARE UNWILLING TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM EXISTS, IT APPEARS THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT REQUIRES GOVERNMENTAL/NHTSA INTERVENTION. I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW MANY OTHER 4RUNNERS ARE ON THE ROAD WITH SIMILAR COMPROMISED FRAMES, AND I WOULD HATE TO SEE AN ACCIDENT DUE TO FRAME FAILURE AT HIGH SPEED OR DURING TIGHT CORNERING. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE TO PREVENT ANY INADVERTENT INJURY OR DEATH.

TOOK MY 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR INPSECTION AND MAINTENANCE. LEFT DEALER THINKING TRUCK WAS IN GREAT SHAPE. WHEN CHANGING BRAKES, NOTICED AN CV JOINT BOOT WAS TORN SO TOOK THE TRUCK TO A MECHANIC TO HAVE THE AXLE REPLACED (SINCE THEY DON'T JUST REPLACE THE BOOT ANYMORE). THE MECHANIC CALLED ME AS SOON AS HE PUT THE TRUCK UP ON A LIFT AND INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS SERIOUS RUST ISSUES DOWN THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME THAT COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. THE WELD ALONG THE WHOLE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE FRAME SEEMS TO HAVE RUSTED OUT AND THERE IS A HOLE THE WHOLE LENGTH OF THE FRAME. THERE ARE ALSO ADDITIONAL HOLES TOWARD THE FRONT THAT ARE RATHER LARGE IN SIZE. CALLED TOYOTA, NOT THE TOYOTA DEALER, AND THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND SUGGESTED I TAKE THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS. WHEN I ASKED WHAT WOULD HAPPEN UPON A BAD DIAGNOSIS, THEY STATED NOTHING BECAUSE THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO RECALLS OR CAMPAIGNS FOR THE TOYOTA 4RUNNERS ONLY THE TACOMAS, TUNDRAS AND SEQUOIA'S. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRECTING THIS ISSSUE BEFORE CAUSING PEOPLE SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. FRONT SUPPORT FRAME UNDER RADIATOR RUSTED THROUGH. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER TOLD ME THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THERE IS NO FIX. THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THE QUESTION IS HOW WOULD THIS HOLD UP IN A FRONTAL CRASH. THE VEHICLE HAS A LITTLE OVER 85,000 MILES AND THIS HAPPENS. IT IS IN A AREA WHERE SALT IS USED. INSTEAD OF THE REP LOOKING AT IT AT A LATER DATE THE SERVICE MANAGER HAD ME BRING THE VEHICLE BACK SO HE COULD TAKE A PICTURE OF IT. I GOT NO HELP FROM THE DEALER/MANUFACTURER. MID 2011 THE ONE CRACK HAS DEVELOPED INTO 2 CRACKS WITH ONE BEING APPROX 15 INCHES LONG AND THE OTHER APPROX 4-5 INCHES LONG. DECEMBER 2011 I CALLED THE DEALER BACK AGAIN TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE FACTORY REP AND I WAS TOLD TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE NUMBER AND THEY TOLD ME I HAD TO CALL MY LOCAL DEALER. I CALLED BACK TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME HE WOULD CALL ME WHEN HE KNEW WHEN THE REP WOULD BE AT THE DEALERSHIP. ONE MONTH LATER, AFTER NOT RECEIVING A PHONE CALL I CALLED THE SERVICE MANAGER BACK AND WAS TOLD HE STILL DID NOT KNOW THE REPS SCHEDULE YET. MY CONCERN IS THAT IF I AM INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIRBAGS DEPLOY, HOW WILL THESE CRACKS AFFECT THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG?? WILL THE DASHBOARD BREAK INTO PIECES WHEN THE AIRBAG DEPLOYS AND HURL PLASTIC PIECES OF THE DASHBOARD TOWARDS THE OCCUPANT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE AT GREAT SPEEDS INSTEAD OF CLEANLY COMING OUT OF THE DASH. *TR

MY 2004 TOYOTA 4/RUNNER DASH BOARD HAS CRACKS ALL IN THE FRONT OF THE RIGHT SIDE AIR BAG (PASSENGER SIDE) THEY CONTINUE TO GROW BECOMING DEEP. THEY APPEARED AT ONE TIME, THIS VERY UNUSUAL, I HAVE OWNED A 1993 TOYOTA 4/RUNNER AND THE DASH BOARD NEVER HAS CRACKS AND IT WAS ALWAYS PARKED OUT SIDE. MY 2004 TOYOTA 4/RUNNER IS A GARAGE KEPT VEHICLE. THIS IS A SAFETY VIOLATION, ONLY CRACKS ON THE FRONT OF THE DASH BOARD ABOVE THE GLOVE BOX WHERE THE AIR BAG IS. I CALLED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID NOTHING CAN BE DONE, TO REPLACE IT WILL BE ABOUT 1,000.00..I ALSO SENT A COMPLAINT TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE FIELD INSPECTOR WILL NOT LOOK AT MY 2004 4/RUNNER BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE YEAR...MY 2004 TOYOTA IS VERY CLEAN AND VERY WELL KEPT, AS STATED AT THE DEALERSHIP WHEN THEY INSPECTED IT AND SAID THEY NEVER SAW ANYTHING LIKE THIS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND TOYOTA FIELD INSPECTOR WILL NOT SEE MY TRUCK...NO ONE CAN TELL ME THAT THIS WILL NOT DEPLOY THE AIR BAG...I AM A TOYOTA CUSTOMER AND I AM NOT GETTING CUSTOMER SERVICE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR A STATE INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN OBSERVED FRAME PERFORATION DUE TO SEVERE RUST CORROSION. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION BECAUSE OF THE FRAME. THERE WERE NO WARNINGS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A STRUCTURE BODY WELDER SHOP FOR A SECOND OPINION AND THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FRAME HAD EXCESSIVE BLISTERS. THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT RECOMMEND THAT THE FRAME BE REPAIRED BECAUSE THE FAILURE WOULD RECUR WITHIN A YEAR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,980 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,400.

-HATCHBACK ELECTRONIC CLOSURE FAILS FOR THE SECOND TIME WITHIN A ONE YEAR PERIOD -REPLACED MOTOR ONCE BECAUSE VEHICLE DOES NOT OPERATE WITHOUT--EXHAUST FUMES COME THROUGH THE HATCHBACK, UNABLE TO LOCK VEHICLE, LIGHTS DON'T AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF, WATER DURING RAIN OR SNOW GETS INSIDE VEHICLE, ETC THERE IS NO MANUAL OVER-RIDE TO ENABLE CLOSING THE HATCHBACK THERE IS NO PURPOSE FOR AN ELECTRONIC CLOSING DEVICE--YOU STILL MANUALLY PULL DOWN THE HATCH, AND ONCE CLOSED, THE MOTOR ENGAGES TO LATCH IT SHUT! THE PART WASN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, DESPITE OTHER HATCHBACK COMPLAINTS (POOR AERODYNAMIC DESIGN WITH LOTS OF DIRT THROWN UP ON HATCHBACK), SO THERE HAVE BEEN ISSUES WITH USING THE KEY LOCK, BEING UNABLE TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW, AND NOW THE VEHICLE IS RUSTING AROUND THE WINDOW. *TR
