The contact owns a 2007 Toyota 4Runner. The contact stated that the vehicle was swaying while driving approximately 35 MPH. There was no warning light illuminated. Additionally, the subframe was corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

I was having front brakes repaired, and mechanic called me over to lift to see under the car. Extremely rusty, flakes of metal coming off. He advised I do not even try and put it on a lift again, as he does not trust the structural integrity. He advised that it was definitely not normal, and not in keeping with the otherwise excellent and well cared for car.
The frame on my 4-Runner is rusted out to the point of being borderline unsafe, as per the Toyota Dealer. I don't have a scanner otherwise I would upload the pictures. The invoice from the dealer has my contact info. Not sure if you want that info.
The Undercarriage of my 2007Toyota 4runner sport has irregular rusting issue. The truck has 128,000 miles on it and has been well maintained and garaged most of its life. I was under it the other day to check the exhaust system and noticed the frame is rusting like no other car I know of. Even cars that sat in junkyards for decades. I know they had a recall for similar issues with other vehicles within the same year. However, when I spoke with Toyota they were uninterested in helping me and told me it was my problem. Other than the frame rust the truck is in perfect condition. Is this something that you can help me with. I see I am not alone having this issue and that it is well reported. Excessive frame rust on the frame itself and on suspension components including control arms and support brackets. Toyota dealership stated that rust could be an issue with maintenance.
RECENTLY LOOKED AT 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER LIMITED V8 FOR SALE TO REPLACE MY 2005 LIMITED THAT HAS SEVERE FRAME CORROSION AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS VEHICLE TOO HAS NEARLY THE EXACT SAME CORROSION ISSUES. THE REAR OF THE FRAME BY THE BUMPER, WHERE THE CONTROL ARMS AND RADIATOR ARE ATTACHED TO THE CHASSIS AND FRAME RAILS ARE SO BADLY CORRODED YOU CAN PUSH YOUR FINGER THROUGH THE METAL. HOW MUCH MORE EVIDENCE DOES NHTSA NEED TO DEMAND TOYOTA RECALL THESE VEHICLES? LOOK AT THE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS TO NHTSA AND THOUSANDS OF OWNERS ONLINE POSTING PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF THEIR VEHICLES RUST ISSUES. THERE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES CORRODING JUST LIKE THE OTHER TOYOTA BODY ON FRAME PRODUCTS THAT WERE RECALLED FOR FRAME REPLACEMENTS. I HAVE A 2007 4RUNNER WITH CURRENTLY AROUND 180K MILES. WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IT HAD SOME RUSTING TO THE FRAME BUT NOTHING DEEMING IT UNSAFE OR DANGEROUS. VEHICLE HAS PREMATURE EXCESSIVE RUST OF THE FRAME AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE SAME RECALL MY 05 SEQUOIA (AS WELL AS TACOMAS AND TUNDRAS) OF THE SAME ERA SINCE ALL WERE MANUFACTURED WITH THE SAME PROCESS THAT LACKED ADEQUATE APPLICATION OF RUST PROTECTION/COATING. MANY OTHERS ON HERE AS WELL AS ONLINE ON OTHER SITES ALSO ARE REPORTING THIS GENERATION OF 4RUNNER TO HAVE RUSTING. I HAVE RUSTED MOTOR MOUNTS THAT CAUSE MOTOR VIBRATION, RUSTED BRACKETS HOLDING MY GAS TANK TO THE FRAME, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL TRANSMISSION LINES DUE TO RUST THAT LEFT ME STRANDED WHILE MOVING ACROSS THE COUNTRY. I HAVE HAD TO DO REPLACE SEVERAL RUSTED PARTS LIKE CV AXELS, WHEEL BARRINGS, AND POSSIBLY RUSTED STEERING BOX LEAK/RACK AND PINION (CONFLICTING INFO FROM2 MECHANICS SO UNDETERMINED). I PURCHASED THIS IN 2014 AND JUST PAID IT OFF AND NEED HELP AS IT SHOULD HAVE LASTED ME MORE THAN 7 YRS AND SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS KIND OF RUST IN YRS 7-11 AFTER BEING MADE! IT HAS LOW MILES AND SHOULD HAVE LASTED MANY YEARS TO COME. EVERYTHING ELSE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION BUT THIS FRAME ISSUE THEY EXCLUDED THIS MODEL FROM NEEDS TO BE EXTENDED FOR 4RUNNERS IN THE SAME GENERATIONS OF THE RECALL MENTIONED ABOVE. THIS IS LEAVING MANY DRIVERS WHO PAID THE EXTRA PRICETAG TO HAVE A TOYOTA LEFT WITH A FINACIAL LOSS OF PURCHASE AS WELL AS LOSS OF USE OF A VEHICLE. PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE COMPLAINTS. SOME ARE MISLABELED ON THIS SITE BUT DESCRIPTIONS SHOW IT IS A FRAME ISSUE THAT CAUSES MANY SECONDARY ISSUES/RELATED REPAIRS. I FOUND OUT THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MANY 4TH GENERATION 4RUNNER OWNERS BUT TOYOTA WON'T RECALL OR EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR THIS ISSUE ANY LONGER. NOW I HAVE TO EITHER NEVER USE MY REAR DEFROSTER AGAIN WHILE LIVING IN COLORADO OR RISK IT SHATTERING AGAIN AND HURTING PASSENGERS IN MY CAR. FRAME IS VERY RUSTY. REPLACING SEVERAL STEERING AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. THE METAL IS VERY THIN AND RUSTY RIGHT UNDER THE RADIATOR TO THE POINT WHERE THERE IS NOW A HOLE IN IT AND MAY COLLAPSE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

VEHICLE FRAME IS EXTREMELY CORRODED TO THE POINT WHERE REPLACING NECESSARY ITEMS SUCH AS SHOCKS/STRUTS/STEERING COMPONENTS IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT IRREPARABLE DAMAGE. I WAS DRIVING WITH MY CHILD IN THE CAR AND LOST CONTROL OF STEERING AND HEARD LOUD NOISE. I HAD NO CONTROL OF STEERING AND THE CAR CROSSED LANES LUCKILY MISSING OTHER VEHICLES. IT STOPPED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND A BODY SHOP HAPPENED TO WITNESS THE WHOLE THING. HE TRIED TO DRIVE IT INTO HIS SHOP (TWO DRIVEWAYS AWAY) BUT ENDED UP HAVING TO DRAG/TOW IT IN BECAUSE THE FRONT END FRAME HAD RUSTED AND FALLEN FROM THE VEHICLE. THAT BODY SHOP LOOKED AT IT AND I ALSO GOT A SECOND OPINION AND THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING. THE FRONT END OF THE CAR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE FRONT STEERING RUSTED SO BADLY IT DISCONNECTED COMPLETELY AND FELL OUT FROM THE FRAME. IT IS ALSO SO RUSTED THERE IS NOT ENOUGH METAL TO RE-WELD IT TOO. THE CAR IS TOTALED WHEN THE CAR HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED. IT WAS TERRIFYING AND WAS LUCKY I HAPPENED TO ONLY BE GOING 25 MPH DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD AND NO ONE WAS HURT. THE CAR THAT WAS RUNNING GREAT AND WAS WELL MAINTAINED IS NOW NOT DRIVABLE OR EVEN FIXABLE AND MY CHILD AND MYSELF WERE IN SERIOUS DANGER. EVERY MECHANIC IS TELLING ME THIS IS A FAULT COMMON IN TOYOTAS AND IS A PROBLEM WITH THE FRAME AND SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED AND WAS TOLD THE ONLY THING I COULD DO WAS FILE A COMPLAINT BUT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESOLVING.

THE EXPERT LOOKED AT THE RUST, WENT TO SCRAPE IT, AND THE EXTERIOR CRUMBLED IN CREATING A DECENT HOLE. THE EXPERT SAID THAT THERE WAS NO REASON FOR A TRUCK THIS AGE SHOULD HAVE THIS PROBLEM. HE CALLED TOYOTA TO COMPLAIN SAYING THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM TOYOTA SHOULD FIX, BUT THEY SAID THEY HAD NO RECALL ON THE ISSUE. THE EXPERT TOLD ME THAT THE CAR WAS RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE AND IS EATING AWAY AT THE LAYERS OF PAINT. HE SAID I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CAUSE. HE ALSO SAID THAT HE COULD FIX IT AT A HIGH PRICE, BUT THAT MAY NOT EVEN SOLVE THE PROBLEM. WHEN I CALLED DON MCGILL TOYOTA IN HOUSTON, TX, THEY EXPLAINED THIS IS NOT A RECALL ITEM & IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $350 TO REPAIR SINCE IT INCLUDES REPLACING THE ENTIRE BUTTON & ELECTRICAL PARTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE HATCHBACK. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE I CANNOT OPEN THE HATCHBACK PROPERLY. I BELIEVE THIS IS A FAULTY HATCHBACK HANDLE WHICH TOYOTA SHOULD REPAIR AT NO CHARGE. THE BACK, TRUNK HANDLE SWITCH CONSISTS OF A BLACK, RUBBER TYPE OF MATERIAL THAT MELTS EVERY SUMMER. I LIVE IN TEXAS SO SUMMERS CAN GET EXTREMELY HOT. SO, I'M WRITING THIS TO HOPEFULLY GET A RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA TO REPLACE THESE HANDLES WITH ANOTHER TYPE OF MATERIAL. I'VE RESEARCHED ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS NOT ONLY WITH 4RUNNERS THAT THIS HAPPENS ON BUT ALSO SIENNAS. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THIS WITH ANY VEHICLES WE PURCHASE REGARDLESS OF WHERE WE LIVE. TOYOTA SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND NOT EXPECT CUSTOMERS TO JUST FIX IT ON THEIR OWN, NOT TO MENTION REPLACE IT WITH THE SAME SWITCH THAT WE HAD ISSUES ON TO BEGIN WITH. *TR
THE LEFT REAR SECTION OF MY VEHICLES FRAME WHERE THE REAR TRACTION BAR MOUNTS IS COMPLETELY SEPARATED AT THE WELDS LEAVING A LARGE HOLE IN THE FRAME WHERE THE BRACKET ONCE WAS. THIS ISSUE IS SIMILAR TO THE TACOMA FRAME RECALL. MY 97 4 RUNNER IS BASICALLY TOTALED AT THIS POINT AND WILL NOT PASS MASS STATE INSPECTION EVEN THOUGH THE DRIVETRAIN AND BODY ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. *TR

THE REAR DOOR OPENING HANDLE HAS MATERIAL THAT HAS MELTED MAKING IT ALMOST ALWAYS IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. I MOVED LAST AUGUST FROM TEXAS TO SOUTH CAROLINA AND APPARENTLY THE MATERIAL TOYOTA USED IN IT'S 2007 4-RUNNERS CANNOT HOLD UP TO THE TEXAS HEAT. THE INSURANCE COMPANY FOR TOYOTA WHICH COVERS THE EXTENDED WARRANTY I PURCHASED DENIED PAYING FOR THE REPAIR STATING THAT MY REAR DOOR CAN BE OPENED SOME OF THE TIME!! THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION & I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GET MY DOGS OUT OF THE REAR DOOR ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS..FORTUNATELY NONE OF THEM LIFE THREATENING YET. *TR

2007 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER WITH BAD GROUND CLEARANCE. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE VEHICLE SCRAPES THE GROUND. TOYOTA REPS AND SERVICE REPS KEEP TELLING HER THAT GROUND CLEARANCE IS MEASURED DIFFERENT WAYS. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED SHE WANTED A VEHICLE WITH HIGH GROUND CLEARANCE. THE DEALER TOLD HER THE VEHICLE HAD 9.1 INCHES OF GROUND CLEARANCE, BUT LATER THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED THAT WASN'T TRUE. *JB
