CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE - THEY REVIEWED MY COMPLAINT BUT DECLINED TO HELP.

A FEW DAYS LATER, THE BRAKE LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL AND ABS LIGHTS TURNED ON, AND CHECK VSC SYSTEM DISPLAYED WHEN AT A RED LIGHT ON A RESIDENTIAL AREA (25MPH). I TOOK THE TO TOYOTA FOR THE SECOND TIME, AND THEY SAID IT WAS AN ABS ISSUE, ACTUATOR AND 4 BRAKE FLUIDS. THE COST TO REPAIR IT IS $1926.54. THE DEALER ADVISED ME TO CALL TOYOTA, WHICH I DID, BC THERE HAD BEEN PROBLEMS WITH BRAKING IN 07 AND 08 TOYOTA CAMRYS. TOYOTA WAS INCREDIBLY UNHELPFUL (THIS DESPITE MY OWNING TWO TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRIDS), EVEN THOUGH TOYOTA HAD ISSUED TWO EXTENDED WARRANTIES BECAUSE OF THE ISSUES WITH INTERMITTENT LOSS OF ASSISTED BRAKING REPORTED BY MANY CUSTOMERS, THE LAST ONE THROUGH JULY OF 2017. THE WOMAN I SPOKE TO INSISTED THAT SINCE THE CAR EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM "OUT OF WARRANTY" THERE IS NOTHING TOYOTA WAS WILLING TO DO.

I BORROWED AN ACTRON SCANNER THAT HAD THE CAPABILITY OF BASIC HYBRID CODES AND ONE CODE WAS PRESENT "P0A80". ALSO, CHECK VSC WOULD SHOW ALL THE TIMES. SOMEWHERE I READ THIS IS NORMAL WITH P0A80 AS THE ECM SHUTS DOWN THE VSC TO CONSERVE POWER..

BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD TO ENGAGE AND WHEN VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP, THERE WAS A SINGLE "KNOCK OR BANG" SOUND. THIS WARNING HAD COME ON PREVIOUSLY WITHOUT BRAKING ISSUE UNTIL LAST WEEK WHEN MY WIFE TOLD ME SHE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. I CLEANED AND SUBSEQUENTLY REPLACED THE GAS CAP AS PER A YOU TUBE DESCRIBED REPAIR OF THE CHECK VSC WARNING. I THEN DROVE THE CAR INTERMITTENTLY SINCE THAT TIME WITHOUT INCIDENT UNTIL TODAY. MY WIFE EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM 12/7/2017.

NOW MY CAR IS DISPLAYING "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" AND MANY LIGHTS ON MY DASH. WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN TO MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THEY SAID IT IS THE ABS ACTUATOR AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. TOYOTA HAD 2 EXTENDED WARRANTIES FOR TROUBLE WITH THE ABS ACTUATOR. BOTH OF THESE WARRANTIES HAVE NOW EXPIRED SO MY ABS ACTUATOR CANNOT BE FIXED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTIES. BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY PART AT ANYTIME I AM DRIVING I CAN LOSE BRAKING AND STEERING POWER. I HAD FILED A COMPLAINT BEFORE WITH YOUR AGENCY FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE BUT THERE WAS NO WAY FOR ME TO HAVE THE PART CHANGED WHEN THE EXTENDED WARRANTIES WERE IN-FORCE BECAUSE THE PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR AND AS I SAID EARLIER MY DEALERSHIP COULD NOT GET THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE FROM THE FIRST TIME THESE ISSUES OCCURRED.

I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED. A MONTH AGO (2 YEARS LATER) THE SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS OCCURRED (SAME 5 WARNING LIGHTS). I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY SAID SINCE MY VEHICLE WAS ALREADY CORRECTED, THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT ZE1 NO LONGER APPLIED. SEEMS TO BE A RECURRENT PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA SHOULD WARRANTY.

TOOK THE CAR TO THE LOCAL HYBRID BATTERY EXPERT AND FOUND THAT THE BATTERY WAS OPERATING NORMAL. TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED ABS ACTUATOR WAS FAULTY. TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGED USING THE FAULTY ABS ACTUATOR AND WAS OFFERING FREE REPLACEMENT FOR VEHICLES UNDER 150K. THE CAR JUST PASSED 160K AND THE SERVICE WAS DENIED. THE CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED BY THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR REGULAR MAINTEINANCE AND THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO INFORM THE CUSTOMERS OF POSSIBLE DANGER OF FAULTY ABS ACTUATOR. THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE WAS NEVER INFORMED WHEN THE CAR WAS IN FOR SERVICES AT THE DEALERSHIP.

INSTANTLY THE HYBRID PART OF THE VEHICLE STOPPED WORKING. BRAKES CHANGED FEEL AND THROTTLE BECAME VERY DELAYED. WHEN I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY AND PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK, THE ENGINE STARTED TO KNOCK. WHEN I PUT INTO DRIVE OR NEUTRAL THE KNOCKING STOPS. THE ENGINE KNOCKED HARD IN PARK POSITION AS IF THERE ARE LOOSE PIECES OF METAL CRUNCHING. I CONTACTED TOYOTA ABOUT THE FAILURE AND THEY CLAIMED THAT MY SITUATION WAS ONE OF A KIND AND THERE WAS NOT PATTERN OF SIMILAR FAILURES FOR THIS MODEL. AFTER PROLONGED ARGUMENTS WITH TOYOTA AND THE DEALERSHIP, I COULD NOT GET THEM TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM UNDER THE 100,000 MILES WARRANTY FOR THE HYBRID COMPONENTS OF THE CAR. I HAD TO PAY OVER $3,000 TO GET THE CAR REPAIRED. TOYOTA WAS CONTACTED AND RECOMMENDED THE ACCUMULATOR ASSEMBLY BE REPLACED, BRAKE SYSTEM BLEED, RESET MEMORY AND CALIBRATED LINEAR VALVE. THE PARKING BRAKE LIGHT SEEMED TO COME ON AT THAT TIME. I COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO ROLL ANY BUT INSTEAD HAD TO HIT THE ACCELERATOR TO MOVE AT ALL. I HAVE BEEN USING THIS CAMRY SINCE MID 2006. SO FAR IT HAS NOT HAD MANY MAJOR ISSUES. THIS PART AND THE LABOR TO PUT IT IN WILL RUN ME NEARLY $3000, A SUM FAR TOO MANY CAR OWNERS CANNOT AFFORD, INCLUDING MYSELF. WITHOUT IMMEDIATE AND SUBSTANTIAL DRIVER INPUT THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN AN OUT-OF-CONTROL SITUATION. THE CAR HAS REMAINED PARKED SINCE THAT INCIDENT FOR FEAR IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WITHOUT FUNCTIONING BRAKES. THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKES ON THIS VEHICLE IN AN ABS FAILURE MODE IS DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY. MY WIFE KEEP THE BRAKES PRESSED BUT THE CAR WAS OUT OF CONTROL; CAR WENT ACROSS FROM EAST TO WEST, JUMPING TWO LINES. I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES PER HOUR AND COMING TO A STOP WHEN THE VSC WARNING LIGHT , BRAKE WARNING LIGHT, AND TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THE LIGHT REMAINED ON AFTER RESTARTING THE ENGINE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME MORE RESISTANT TO BRAKING. THE PROBLEM IN MY CAR ACTUALLY BEGAN MONTHS BEFORE THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND WAS NOT CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED AT THE DEALERSHIP. EARLY SIGNS WERE EXCESSIVE CLICKING SOUNDS COMING FROM THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY ON THE RIGHT FRONT AREA OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, AND AN INTERMITTENT HYDRAULIC SOUND WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS KEPT DEPRESSED. AFTER THE REPAIR I FOUND THAT THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON ON THE 2007 CAMRY HYBRID. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN FOR THE PAST WEEKS WITH A PULSATING NOISE UNDER THE HOOD, SPECIALLY AT STOPS WAITING FOR A RED LIGHT. YOU CAN FEEL THE PULSATION ON THE PEDAL WHEN YOU DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE NOISE GETS LOUDER THE HARDER YOU PRESS THE PEDAL AND THE CAR SEEMS LIKE ITS TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD ON ITS OWN. NO PROBLEM LIGHTS WERE ON THE CONTROL PANEL UNTIL IT REACHED 87,225. AFTER THAT I HAD THE ABS, BRAKE, WARNING, VST LIGHTS ALL ON WITH THE MESSAGE OF CHECK VST ON THE LCD OF THE CONTROL PANEL. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND AFTER INSPECTION THEY DETERMINED THAT THE ABS ACTUATOR MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE QUOTE WAS FOR $2,600!!!!! I STARTED SEARCHING ONLINE AND FOUND OUT SEVERAL OTHER CAMRY OWNERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I'M FILING THE COMPLAINT BECAUSE THIS IS A VERY CRITICAL COMPONENT IN TERMS OF SAFETY AND IT IS FAILING AT A VERY LOW MILEAGE (UNDER 100K) AND SOMETIMES EVEN UNDER 60K. ALSO THE COST OF REPAIR IS SO HIGH YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO INCREASE THE FINANCIAL BURDEN BECAUSE IT IS A PART THAT IT IS CRITICAL FOR THE CAR'S SAFETY OPERATION. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED A SECOND AND THIRD TIME, ONCE MINUTES AFTER STARTUP AND ONCE WHILE TRAVELING AT 30 MPH NOT FAR FROM MY DESTINATION, THANKFULLY. AFTER PARKING THE CAR FOR 2 HOURS, THE CAR DROVE NORMALLY. THE FOURTH TIME THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED, I HAD JUST LEFT THE CAPITAL BELTWAY AND WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BRAKING IN ORDER TO SAFELY ROUND A CLOVERLEAF ONTO RIVER ROAD. THE BRAKES WERE BARELY RESPONSIVE, AND I NARROWLY MISSED CRASHING INTO THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO 355 TOYOTA ON DECEMBER 27. THE CAR WAS KEPT FOR 24 HOURS. THE MECHANICS COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST TIME A PROBLEM SUCH AS MINE HAS BEEN REPORTED TO 355 TOYOTA.
