I WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD AT A SPEED OF 35 MILES PER HOUR AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" LIGHT TURNED ON MY DASHBOARD AND THE BRAKE OF THE CAR BECAME LOOSE. WHEN I TRY TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN BY APPLYING THE BRAKE, IT WOULDN'T LET ME DO SO. I WAS APPROACHING THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AND I HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE TOO HARD SO THAT THE CAR CAN STOP. FINALLY, I WAS ABLE TO STOP IT BY APPLYING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE.

AS I WAS TRAVELING ON I75 NORTH OF ATLANTA, I NEEDED TO SLOW FOR TRAFFIC CONGESTION. I APPLIED THE BRAKES, BUT THEY DIDN'T SEEM TO WORK. SEVERAL LIGHTS ON THE DASH CAME ON INCLUDING THE CHECK HYBRID ENGINE, THE CHECK VSC SYSTEM, AND THE ABS LIGHTS. THE POWER BRAKES WERE OFF AND IT BECAME DIFFICULT TO STOP. THEN THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE STOPPED COMPLETELY REQUIRING ME TO MANEUVER OUT OF HEAVY TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. I TURNED ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS, BUT WAS ALMOST HIT BY SEVERAL VEHICLES AS I GOT TO THE SHOULDER.

THE ABS LIGHT AND CHECK VSC LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT WENT ON. WHEN I TRIED TO APPLY BRAKES TO STOP, I REALIZED THAT THE BRAKES COMPLETELY FAILED. AFTER I DID, THE CAR AGAIN WENT OFF WITH THE WARNING SIGNS ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE VSC DISPLAY WAS ON AGAIN STATING MAINTENANCE WAS REQUIRED ONE AGAIN. SO I STARTED TO DRIVE SLOW ONCE AGAIN. WENT TO A REPAIR SHOP THEY SAID MY BRAKES WERE GOOD, AND THAT THE CAR PROBABLY NEEDED TO GET IT CHECK BECAUSE OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM. THIS ONLY HAPPEN DURING THE SUMMER. DURING THE WINTER IT GOES OFF, TO WHICH I STILL FELT LIKE IT WAS A COMPUTER GLITCH. WENT TO THE DEALER RECENTLY AND THEY SAID THAT MY ACCUMULATOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACE. I ASKED HOW DOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS OCCUR. THE MECHANIC STATED SOMEWHERE IN THE LINES OF IT'S A MAN MADE PART SO IT'S CAN HAPPEN FROM TIME TO TIME. BUT IN MY OPINION, IF I DID EVERYTHING LIKE I WAS SUPPOSE TO DO, THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. THE TOTAL REPAIR FOR THE PART IS $1892! THAT'S WITH LABOR INCLUDED! BRAKE ALERT LIGHTS APPEARED ON DASH ON NIGHT OF 9/5/14 UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE. READ CODES IN OWNER'S MANUAL, AND DROVE FEW BLOCKS TO HOME AT SLOW SPEED (15 MPH). ON SATURDAY MORNING, 9/6/14, THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AGAIN WHEN I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 25-30 MILES PER HOUR. NOT ONLY DID THE ALERT LIGHTS APPEAR, BUT THE BRAKES "BLED" THROUGH TO THE FLOOR, AND IT FELT AS IF THE CAR ACCELERATED. BRAKES WORKED ONLY AFTER PUMPING THE BRAKE PEDAL. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO SERVICE CENTER. AFTER DIAGNOSTICS AND DRIVING FOR 90 MILES OVER 4 DAYS, THE INCIDENT COULD NOT BE REPLICATED, NOR DID ANY CODES APPEAR ON THE COMPUTER. VEHICLE WAS RELEASED AFTER PAYING DIAGNOSTIC FEES. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AGAIN ON 10/2/14: BRAKE LIGHTS APPEARED ON DASH, THE CAR FELT IT WAS ACCELERATING, AND THE BRAKES FAILED TEMPORARILY. MY FOOT BLED THROUGH, I PUMPED THE PEDAL BEFORE BRAKES BEGAN TO WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. AGAIN, DIAGNOSTICS DID NOT REVEAL CODES NOR WAS THE INCIDENT ABLE TO BE REPLICATED. DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR ACCORDING TO TOYOTA CORPORATE DIRECTIONS. FOUND INFO ONLINE THAT NHTSA CITED 59 COMPLAINTS OF BRAKE FAILURE FOR 2007-08 CAMRY HYBRIDS. REPORTED THESE INCIDENTS TO TOYOTA CORPORATE, WHO ASSIGNED A CASE NO. HAVE NOT HEARD FROM CORPORATE CASE MGR. YET, BUT EXPECT TO BY MONDAY, 10/06/14. CORPORATE SAID THEY DO NOT OFFER A LOANER VEHICLE WHILE THIS IS BEING ADDRESSED, BUT TO ASK DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD NOT PROVIDE A LOANER VEHICLE. *TR

ON 5/21/14, IN SAFE ROAD CONDITIONS AND PARKING LOT SPEEDS <10 MPH, DRIVER APPLIED BRAKES TO VEHICLE IN ORDER TO PULL INTO PARKING SPOT. DURING BRAKING, VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW OR STOP, BUT ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, STRIKING A PARKING BERM AND THREE OTHER VEHICLES. POLICE REPORT MADE; DRIVER NOT CITED BUT WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT TOYOTA RE BRAKE FAILURE AND ACCELERATION. TOYOTA WAS CONTACTED; INSPECTION WAS MADE BY BOSCH ENGINEERING. TOYOTA CONTENDS THE INCIDENT IS NOT A RESULT OF ANY MANUFACTURING DEFECT. TOYOTA PROVIDED A TECHNICAL REPORT CONTAINING ENGINEERING DATA WITHOUT LAYMAN'S EXPLANATION OR PROOF OF ITS CONTENTION. TOYOTA WAS FOUND BY THE DOJ TO HAVE MISLED CONSUMERS AND THE GOVT REGARDING SEVERITY AND "RESOLUTION: OF THIS ISSUE. ON 8/21/14 AND 8/22/14 DRIVER WAS CONTACTED BY TOYOTA WITH A SECOND AND SEPARATE RECALL NOTICE #E0U, AFFECTING THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE RESERVOIRS, IN WHICH CLOGGING AND/OR LOW FLUID LEVELS "COULD CAUSE ADDITIONAL WARNING LAMPS[...]TO ILLUMINATE AND FRONT BRAKE ASSIST COULD BE TEMPORARILY LOST." THE WARNING LAMP IN QUESTION DID ILLUMINATE DURING THE 5/21 INCIDENT. LEGAL COUNSEL FOR DRIVER HAS ADVISED AN INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF THE BOSCH REPORT AND INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE RESERVOIR; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND SOLD AT AUCTION BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY'S SALVAGE AGENT. WHILE DRIVING UP A SLIGHT INCLINE THE INDICATING LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD SUDDENLY ILLUMINATED - RED BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING ICON, RED ABS LIGHT, RED BRAKE LIGHT, RED MASTER WARNING LIGHT. IN ADDITION, THE SCREEN DISPLAYED "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" AND AN AUDIBLE WARNING TONE SOUNDED. FROM ABOUT 6 MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, THE BRAKE ACTUATOR MOTOR WOULD CYCLE ON/OFF FREQUENTLY AFTER A TRIP. OVER TIME, THE DURATION OF THE ON AND OFF CYCLING AFTER A TRIP GRADUALLY INCREASED FROM ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO APPROXIMATELY 90 SECONDS. THE ACTUATOR MOTOR ALSO CYCLED WHEN OPENING THE DOOR BEFORE A TRIP. OTHER SYMPTOMS THAT SURFACED PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT INCLUDED FREQUENT ON/OFF CYCLING OF THE BRAKE ACTUATOR MOTOR AT TRAFFIC LIGHT STOPS AND AN AUDIBLE "BARKING" SOUND FROM UNDER THE HOOD. RESEARCH ON THE WORLD-WIDE-WEB REVEALED MANY OWNERS WITH SAME SYMPTOMS. BECAUSE THE ENGINE IN THE HYBRID CARS TURN OFF DURING NORMAL OPERATION, ENGINE VACUUM IS NOT READILY AVAILABLE FOR THE POWER BRAKE ASSISTANCE AS FOUND IN CONVENTIONAL AUTOMOBILES. CONSEQUENTLY, THE FAILURE OF THE POWER ASSIST IS DUE TO THE INADEQUATE DESIGN OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM. FURTHERMORE, I UNDERSTAND THAT THE REPLACEMENT BRAKE ACTUATOR PART THAT TOYOTA PROVIDES FOR THE 2007 AND 2008 CAMRY HYBRIDS HAS A DIFFERENT PART NO. THAN THE ORIGINAL ONE PROVIDED. THIS STRONGLY SUGGESTS THAT TOYOTA RECOGNIZES ITS ORIGINAL BRAKE ACTUATOR HAS A FAULTY DESIGN. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE CAR SINCE THIS INCIDENT FOR FEAR OF LOSING THE POWER ASSIST ON THE BRAKES. I HAVE BEEN USING THIS CAMRY SINCE MID 2006. SO FAR IT HAS NOT HAD MANY MAJOR ISSUES. HOWEVER OUT OF THE BLUE ON MARCH 23RD 2014, WHEN I WAS PLANNING TO DRIVE TO A TEMPLE ALMOST 50 MILES FROM MY HOUSE WITH MY WIFE, 2 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER, MOTHER AND MOTHER-IN-LAW IN THE CAR, JUST AS WE PULLED OUT OF THE DRIVE WAY, THE CHECK VSC MESSAGE CAME ON AND THE BRAKE LIGHT, THE CAR SLIPPING LIGHT AND THE BAS LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASH AND AS I TRIED TO BRAKE, THE BRAKES COMPLETELY FAILED. THE BRAKE SYSTEM CAME BACK ONLINE AFTER ABOUT 10 SECONDS, AND WE WERE ONCE AGAIN ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN. THIS WAS A EXTREMELY TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE, AND I HAVE SINCE THEN FOUND OUT THAT MANY OTHERS HAVE FACED THE SAME PROBLEM, ON THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL. THIS HAS HAPPENED A FEW DIFFERENT TIMES IN THE PAST TO BOTH MY WIFE AND MYSELF, BUT FORTUNATELY WE WERE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT WHENEVER IT HAPPENED. THIS PROMPTED US TO TAKE OUR CAR IN TO THE DEALER AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE BRAKE SYSTEM. ON BOTH OCCASIONS, THE DEALER HAS NEVER DETECTED ANY ISSUE WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM, AND WE HAVE CONTINUED DRIVING OUR CAR UNAWARE OF THE POTENTIAL RISK. LAST MONTH I PAID $3200.00 TO HAVE THE CAR FIXED! I ALSO WENT ONLINE TO FIND OUT IF THERE WERE OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS, INCLUDING ACTUAL ACCIDENTS AND NEAR MISSES LIKE MINE. THIS WARNING CAME AND WENT INTERMITTENTLY FOR SOME TIME, AND NOW SEEMS TO BE A PERMANENT PROBLEM. THE BRAKES FEEL JAGGED WHILE PRESSING LIGHTLY, ALMOST LIKE THE BRAKE PADS ARE GONE, AND THE ROTORS ARE UNEVEN. A DEALERSHIP IN OKLAHOMA IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM TO BE WITH THE "ACCUMULATOR" FOR THE ABS SYSTEM. THIS PART AND THE LABOR TO PUT IT IN WILL RUN ME NEARLY $3000, A SUM FAR TOO MANY CAR OWNERS CANNOT AFFORD, INCLUDING MYSELF. TOYOTA HAS INSISTED THAT BECAUSE MY THE PART IS OUT OF 3YR/36000 MILE WARRANTY, THEY WILL NOT HELP IN THE COST OF THIS REPAIR. MEANWHILE, TOYOTA HAS CHANGED THE ORIGINAL OEM PART, A TACIT ACCEPTANCE THAT THE ORIGINAL IS FLAWED, AND NEEDED TO BE RE-ENGINEERED. APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS AGO THE "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" WARNING CAME ON IN OUR 2007 CAMRY HYBRID. WE NOTICED NO AFFECT TO THE DRIVING OF THE CAR, AND SINCE THE OWNERS MANUAL SAID ALMOST NOTHING ABOUT THIS WARNING (SIMPLY SAID TO TAKE IT TO DEALER), WE DROVE THE CAR AS USUAL. WE THEN HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE, APPROACHING A STOP SIGN, THE BRAKES FAILED TO WORK AT FIRST: I HAD TO PUMP THE BRAKES 3+ TIMES IN ORDER TO MAKE THEM ENGAGE. WE THEN TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE A DIAGNOSIS. AFTER SPENDING $116 ON A DIAGNOSTIC (ONLY WAY THEY WOULD TELL US THE ROOT CAUSE) WE LEARNED THAT THERE IS AN ACTUATOR FAILURE WHICH HAS A REPAIR COST OF OVER $3000. UPON RECEIVING THIS INFORMATION WE INVESTIGATED THE VSC ISSUE ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR CAMRY HYBRIDS. OUR CAMRY IS A LITTLE OVER 5 YEARS OLD AND ONLY HAS 57,950 MILES. IT IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE THAT WE SHOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THIS VERY EXPENSIVE PART ON A CAR WITH THIS FEW MILES. WHILE DRIVING DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, THE CAR'S BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN 5-10 SECONDS LATER A "CHECK VSC" MESSAGED DISPLAYED ON THE MESSAGE SCREEN ALONG WITH SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS (ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND MAIN WARNING). THE BRAKES BECAME VERY SOFT (LIKE A CAR WITH NO POWER BRAKES) BUT WOULD SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. I SLOWED DOWN AND GAVE MYSELF PLENTY OF BRAKING DISTANCE TO GET IT HOME. AFTER 10 MINUTES, THE WARNING MESSAGE AND LIGHTS DISAPPEARED AND THE BRAKES RETURNED TO NORMAL OPERATIONS. THIS APPEARED TO BE A TEMPORARY GLITCH. SINCE THIS FIRST APPEARED, THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED 3 TIMES WHILE DRIVING. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THAT THE ABS ACTUATOR WAS FAILING AND QUOTED ME $3,100 TO REPAIR IT. ANOTHER SYMPTOM OF THIS FAILURE IS A CONSTANT ON/OFF BUZZING NOISE COMING FROM THE ABS ACTUATOR AND A "CHIRPING" NOISE WHEN YOUR FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE PETAL DURING A STOP. THE SITUATION ALSO APPEARS TO GET WORSE WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS. I DON'T DRIVE THE VEHICLE ANYMORE. THERE IS NO RECALL OR SERVICE BULLETIN DOCUMENTING THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID THAT STARTED SHOWING "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" ON THE MULTIFUNCTION DISPLAY IN EARLY OCTOBER OF 2013. BY THE END OF THAT MOTH IT BECAME A PERMANENT ITEM ON THE DISPLAY. THE COMPUTER INDICATES A C1391 ERROR. AFTER TESTING THE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY WAS DEEMED DEFECTIVE. I HAVE DISCONTINUED DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AFTER AN INCIDENT IN RAINY WEATHER WHILE THE "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" WAS DISPLAYED ON THE MULTIFUNCTION DISPLAY. I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH IN LIGHT RAIN. TRAFFIC STARTED SLOWING AHEAD SO I TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, BUT THEY DID NOT RESPOND IMMEDIATELY. AFTER AN APPROXIMATELY 2 SECOND DELAY THEY DID RESPOND, BUT IT WAS ABRUPTLY AND CAUSED THE CAR TO START SKIDDING. WITHOUT IMMEDIATE AND SUBSTANTIAL DRIVER INPUT THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN AN OUT-OF-CONTROL SITUATION. THE CAR HAS REMAINED PARKED SINCE THAT INCIDENT FOR FEAR IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WITHOUT FUNCTIONING BRAKES. THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKES ON THIS VEHICLE IN AN ABS FAILURE MODE IS DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY. I HAVE DRIVEN PLENTY OF VEHICLES THAT WERE NOT EQUIPPED WITH ABS, AND NONE OF THOSE VEHICLE EVER EXHIBITED THE DANGEROUS BEHAVIORS THIS VEHICLE EXHIBITS WITH A FAILED COMPONENT. THE CHECK VSC SYSTEM DISPLAY CAME ON WITH ALL THE BRAKE LIGHTS. BASICALLY THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS UP AND WITH EVERY WARNING LIGHT. A MESSAGE ON YOUR DISPLAY SAYS "CHECK VSC SYSTEM". WHEN YOU LOOK IT UP IN YOUR MANUAL IT SAYS - CALL TOYOTA DEALER RIGHT AWAY. I WAS QUOTED AN ABS ACCUMULATOR REPLACEMENT AT THE COST OF $3K. THE CAR WAS UNDER 6 YEAR 75,000 EXTENDED WARRANTY SO EVERY SERVICE AND CHECK WAS PERFORMED. WHEN I REPORTED FLAKY BRAKE BEHAVIOR (PULSING AT A STANDSTILL AND WITH THE PULSATING NOISES - IT'S LIKE YOU ARE BRAKING WHEN YOU ARE IDLING) @ 78K TOYOTA SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH MY BRAKES. IF A DIAGNOSTIC CODE ISN'T APPEARING THEY CAN'T REALLY TELL YOU HAVE AN ISSUE. THE CAR WAS JUST OUT OF EXTENDED WARRANTY. FIRST THING I DID WAS CALL THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. I WAS TOLD IT MIGHT JUST BE THE SENSORS AND I COULD STILL DRIVE IT. I DIDN'T LISTEN TO THEM AND I'M GLAD - SOMETHING JUST SEEMED VERY WRONG WITH THAT ADVICE - AFTER ALL THE BRAKES JUST SEEMED TO BE PULSING ALL THE TIME AND THE CAR DIDN'T BRAKE THE SAME WAY. PRESSING ON THE BRAKE WAS VERY DIFFICULT - THE BRAKES WERE BASICALLY OPERATING MANUALLY WITH NO POWER ASSIST. THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD EVER STOP QUICKLY WITH BRAKES IN THIS CONDITION. I WAS ALSO LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. WE SPOKE TO TOYOTA IN CALIFORNIA AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA SAID THEY WOULDN'T COVER THE PART. THE DEALER SAID OTHERS HAD COME IN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM SO THEY KNEW IT EXISTED. WE HAD A LONG DISCUSSION WITH THE DEALER MANAGER. WHILE DRIVING AND STOPPING, ALL THE ENGINE LIGHTS AND "CHECK VSC" CAME ON AND IT APPEARED THAT MY BRAKES FAILED. IT WAS AS IF MY CAR SHUT COMPLETELY OFF; HOWEVER, IT WAS STILL ON AND I HAD MANUAL BRAKES THAT I HAD TO PUSH VERY HARD TO USE. THIS IS INTERMITTENT AND HAS OCCURRED ABOUT 6 TIMES IN TOTAL. IT HAS BEEN SERVICED 3 TIMES REGARDING THIS INCIDENT, ONE OF WHICH THEY JUST LET ME GO AND SAID THEY COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT. THE LAST TIME THEY DETERMINED THEY "THINK" IT IS THE BRAKE ACTUATOR. AFTER DOING MY OWN RESEARCH ON LINE, IT APPEARS THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE. IT APPEARS THE PART HAS BEEN FAULTY FOR SOME TIME AND I WAS UNAWARE OF IT. IT HAS BEEN MAKING NOISES FOR SEVERAL YEARS THAT I THOUGHT WERE NORMAL; BUT I GUESS THEY WERE NOT. I BELIEVE MINE HAS TAKEN SO LONG TO FINALLY FAIL BECAUSE MOST OF THE LIFE OF THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN ON THE FREEWAY WITH LITTLE BREAKING. WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY AT 70MPH, THE VSC CHECK SYSTEM, ABS, HAZARDS, AND WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE MEDIAN TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. ONLY THING I NOTICED THE NEXT MORNING WAS THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL KICKED BACK TOWARDS ME WHEN I STARTED THE CAR. BRAKES APPEARED TO WORK FINE. LABOR WAS $118. CAR WAS FIXED IN TWO DAYS. FORTUNATELY I HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT COVERED ALL BUT $100 SO I FELT VERY LUCKY. MY MAIN INTENTION ON SUBMITTING THIS IS TO FIND OUT WHY TOYOTA HASN'T ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS PART. AFTER HEARING LOTS OF NOISES FROM THE BRAKE ACCUMULATOR FOR MONTHS, THE BRAKES FAILED WHILE DRIVING. CHECK VSC WARNING, BRAKE LIGHTS, ABS WARNING, AND OTHER BRAKE RELATED WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. DURING BRAKING THE BRAKES RELEASED, AND QUITE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE WAS REQUIRED TO STOP THE CAR AND AVOID A CRASH. TESTING THE SYSTEM SHOWED FAULT CODE C1391 (ABNORMAL LEAK OF ACCUMULATOR PRESSURE). I CLEARED THE FAULT, BUT THE NEXT DAY THE PROBLEM REAPPEARED. WE HAD THE SYSTEM BLED, BUT ONCE AGAIN THE PROBLEM REAPPEARED. BRAKING ACTION INTERMITTENT WITH BRAKES RELEASING AT TIMES, AND AT OTHER TIMES LOCKING UP. A VERY UNSAFE PROPOSITION. THE ENTIRE SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST IN EXCESS OF $3,000. MY '07 CAMRY HYBRID(CH) HAS STARTED TO EXPERIENCE BRAKE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. THE FIRST DOCUMENTED INCIDENT: 03/09/12. WE SPOKE ABOUT IT BEING A DEFECTIVE PART, HE AGREED AND WOULD CALL AND SPEAK TO TOYOTA NATIONAL(TN)TO SEE IF THEY COULD HELP OUT WITH THE $2200 REPAIR. THE NEXT DAY HE TOLD ME THAT TN WOULDN'T HELP, AND NEITHER WOULD THE DEALERSHIP. MY ONLINE RESEARCH DISCOVERED MANY CH HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. WHEN I CONTINUED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKES, THE USUAL RESISTANCE AND BRAKING POWER WAS GONE. I HAD TO PRESS DOWN AS HARD AS I COULD TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. MINUTES AFTER LEAVING HOME WHILE TRAVELING 10 MPH IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH ILLUMINATED - BRAKE, VSC, TIRE, ETC. THE CAR LOST ACCELERATION, THE STEERING BECAME "GUMMY", AND THE BRAKES BECAME "MUSHY". IT TOOK CONSTANT, COMPLETE DEPRESSION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE CAR OVER A LENGTH OF ABOUT 25 FEET. I TOOK THE CAR TO 355 TOYOTA IN ROCKVILLE, MD WHERE IT WAS HOOKED TO A COMPUTER, BUT NO PROBLEM WAS DETECTED. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED A SECOND AND THIRD TIME, ONCE MINUTES AFTER STARTUP AND ONCE WHILE TRAVELING AT 30 MPH NOT FAR FROM MY DESTINATION, THANKFULLY. AFTER PARKING THE CAR FOR 2 HOURS, THE CAR DROVE NORMALLY. THE FOURTH TIME THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED, I HAD JUST LEFT THE CAPITAL BELTWAY AND WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BRAKING IN ORDER TO SAFELY ROUND A CLOVERLEAF ONTO RIVER ROAD. THE BRAKES WERE BARELY RESPONSIVE, AND I NARROWLY MISSED CRASHING INTO THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO 355 TOYOTA ON DECEMBER 27. THE CAR WAS KEPT FOR 24 HOURS. THE MECHANICS COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST TIME A PROBLEM SUCH AS MINE HAS BEEN REPORTED TO 355 TOYOTA. CRUISE CONTROL SET @ 70 MPH SPEED LIMIT ON I-85 WHEN A TRACTOR-TRAILER TRUCK RAPIDLY CLOSED THE INTERVAL BEHIND AS I STARTED UP AN INCLINE. WITHOUT WARNING MY SPEED QUICKLY DROPPED AND THE TRUCK MOVED DANGEROUSLY CLOSE. STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR TO INCREASE SPEED AND WITHIN A SECOND OR TWO THE CRUISE CONTROL FURTHER INCREASED MY SPEED. DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE SPEED INCREASE WAS BECAUSE I WAS PAYING ATTENTION TO THE INTERVAL BETWEEN THE TRUCK AND MY CAR AND NOT WHAT REGISTERED ON MY SPEEDOMETER. AFTER GOING OVER THE HILL'S CREST THERE WAS STATE PATROL CAR IN THE MEDIAN WHO CLOCKED MY SPEED AT 80MPH. HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED SPEED DROPS AND SURGES WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL AND WAS MUCH MORE ATTENTIVE TO THE ACTIONS OF THE CRUISE CONTROL FOR THE REMAINING PART OF THE TRIP. THERE WERE MULTIPLE INSTANCES WHERE THE SPEED WOULD DROP FROM SIX TO SEVEN MILES PER HOUR AS THE CAR STARTED UP AN INCLINE AND THEN WOULD RAPIDLY ACCELERATE, OVERSHOOTING THE SETTING BY THREE TO FOUR MILES PER HOUR (ONCE OVER FIVE) BEFORE ULTIMATELY DROPPING BACK TO THE SET SPEED. THIS IS BOTH A SAFETY CONCERN AS WELL AS UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN THERE IS A SERIES OF ROLLING HILLS. THE TOYOTA DEALER COULD FIND NO PROBLEM WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL, FINDING NO DTC FAULT CODES AND NO ABNORMAL FINDINGS AFTER FORCE TESTING THE CRUISE SYSTEM. I SUSPECT THE ISSUE MAY RELATE TO THE ELECTRONIC CONTROLS FOR THE HYBRID SYSTEM. AS THE CAR WENT DOWN HILL, THE GASOLINE ENGINE APPEARED TO BE IN "IDLE/COASTING" STATE AND THE GPS/ENERGY DISPLAY SHOWED NO ENERGY FLOW TO EITHER THE DRIVE WHEELS OR THE BATTERY FROM THE ENGINE. I WAS COMING OUT OF A BANK DRIVE-THROUGH WHEN SUDDENLY THE 2007 CAMRY-HYBRID, WITH APPROXIMATELY 34,000 MILES RAN, DID NOT STOP AT THE EXIT TO THE PRINCIPAL STREET, THANKFULLY NO CAR WAS COMING FROM THAT STREET. IT STARTED TO RUN ALSO WITH DIFFICULTY, AND THE VSC SYSTEM APPEARED ON THE SCREEN. I WENT DIRECTLY TO THE NEAREST DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT IT WAS PROGRAMMING ISSUE, THEY RE-PROGRAM IT AND THAT WAS IT. THEY COULDN'T EXPLAIN WHY IT DEPROGRAMMED. ELEVEN MONTHS AFTER THAT EVENT, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. SUDDENLY, THE CAR WOULDN'T STOP WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES, I GOT REALLY NERVOUS AND CALLED A TOWING COMPANY TO GET IT TO THE DEALER. I WAS AT LOW SPEED AND I COULD MANAGE TO STOP. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR TWO WEEKS AND COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM OF WHY THE PROGRAMMING SCRAMBLE LIKE THAT, THEY JUST REPROGRAM IT AND THAT'S ALL FOR THEM. IN THE MEANTIME, I'M SCARED TO DEATH OF GOING TO THE HIGHWAY WITH THAT CAR, SPECIALLY WHEN I THINK IT CAN COMBINE WITH THE ACCELERATOR PROBLEM. MY TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID 2007 MODEL HAD THE UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATION PROBLEM ON MULTIPLE INSTANCES MAKING IT HARD TO CONTROL AND ONCE IN A POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. I CALLED THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP AND TOOK IT FOR EXAMINATION, THEY ASKED ME TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM ON THE SPOT, BUT I WAS NOT ABLE TO AT THAT INSTANT. THE DEALERSHIP THEN LATER SAID IT WAS LIKELY DUE TO FLOOR MATS AND I HAD THE FLOOR MATS SECURED (EVEN THOUGHT THAT DID NOT APPEAR TO BE THE CAUSE.) WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON AT 7:30 AM THE "CHECK VSC" WARNING LIGHT IMMEDIATELY CAME ON. I PLANNED TO TAKE MY DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL AND THEN DROP THE CAR OFF TO BE CHECKED AT MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. AFTER ABOUT 2-3 MILES, THE WARNING LIGHT TURNED OFF. AFTER ABOUT 3-4 MILES FURTHER, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND GOT NO BRAKING ACTION. THE BRAKES FELT AS THOUGH THEY HAD COMPLETELY LOST THEIR POWER ASSIST AND THEY DID NOT RESPOND AT ALL. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND COASTED UNTIL I SLOWED DOWN ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER. AS OF THIS MORNING, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THE "CHECK VSC" LIGHT IS STILL OFF. NO INDICATION WAS LEFT ON THE CARS COMPUTER THAT ANY MAINTENANCE LIGHT HAD COME ON OR THAT THERE WERE ANY ISSUES. *TR

WHILE PARKING, MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WHILE TURNING INTO A PARKING SPOT. I DID NOT INADVERTENTLY PRESS THE ACCELERATOR, AND THE ACCELERATOR WAS NOT ENTANGLED IN THE FLOOR MAT. THE VEHICLE RAPIDLY ACCELERATED OVER THE CURB, THROUGH AN ADJOINING GRASSY AREA, AND STOPPED AFTER HITTING A CEMENT WALL. LATER, THE CAR WAS INSPECTED BY THE TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. MY 2007 CAMRY HAS BEEN RECALLED DUE TO THE PEDAL ISSUE AND THE MAT. I TOOK THE MAT OUT HOWEVER EVEN THOUGH MY PEDAL HAS STUCK ALREADY THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT GIVE ME A RENTAL UNTIL THEY FIX THE PROBLEM OR ANOTHER TRADE-IN. AT 12:55 P.M. I WAS PULLING FORWARD IN TO A PARKING SPACE WHERE THERE WAS A CURB AND A TREE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OVER THE CURB, IN TARTAN PARK IN BLOOMINGTON MINNESOTA. MY TOYOTA CAMRY 2008 GAS PEDAL BECAME STUCK AND I WENT OVER THE CURB AND SLAMMED INTO THE TREE AND THREW ME BACK. PEOPLE TOLD ME AT THE PARK THAT THIS WAS ONE OF THE CARS THAT HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM, I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID. WHILE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED INTO AN INTERSECTION; HOWEVER, AFTER REPEATED BRAKE APPLICATION, SHE WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND SHE WAS ADVISED TO REMOVE THE FLOOR-MATS. THE FAILURE RECURRED AFTER THE MATS WERE REMOVED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND THE TECHNICIANS WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 497 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 38,000.

CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY ON ROLLING HILLS WHICH IS LIKELY GOING TO CAUSE COLLISIONS. THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL ALLOW THE SPEED TO DECREASE BY AS MUCH AS 5 MPH WHILE DESCENDING DOWN THE A HILL, THEN AS IT BEGINS TO CLIMB IT QUICKLY ACCELERATES WAY OVER THE TARGET SPEED. I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS MENTIONED IN CONSUMER COMPLAINT: ODI CASE NUMBER: 10188438 (COMPONENT: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CRUISE CONTROL). WHENEVER I START UP A STEEP OR SLIGHTLY STEEP HILL WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON, THE CAR DOESN'T START TO ACCELERATE SOON ENOUGH. THEN, IT APPEARS TO ACCELERATE ALL AT ONCE. I HAVE STARTED ACCELERATING THE CAR MYSELF, RATHER THAN ALLOWING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO ACCELERATE, ON HILLS. AS STATED IN THE PREVIOUS COMPLAINT, THE CRUISE CONTROL WORKS FINE ON FAIRLY LEVEL GROUND.

THE CAR'S CRUISE CONTROL BEHAVIOR ON LEVEL GROUND IS FINE, BUT ON ROLLING HILLS IT'S TOTALLY EGREGIOUS, AND INDICATES TO ME THAT THIS FEEDBACK CONTROL SYSTEM MAY BE CLOSE TO INSTABILITY AND THEREFORE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. I THINK THAT THE CONTROL ALGORITHM USED IS DREADFULLY SUB-OPTIMAL, AND HAS SUCH LONG INTERNAL CONTROL-LOOP PROCESSING DELAYS THAT ITS REACTIONS TO CHANGING ROAD CONDITIONS ARE ALARMING. WHAT I FIND IS THE FOLLOWING BEHAVIOR. THE CAR SUBSTANTIALLY OVERSHOOTS (BY 10 MPH OR MORE) THE SET SPEED ON THE DOWNHILL PORTION OF EACH HILL, BUT THEN WAITS SO LONG BEFORE REACTING TO THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT UPHILL PORTION, THAT IT THEN UNDERSHOOTS THE SET SPEED BY SUCH A LARGE AMOUNT (5 MPH OR MORE) THAT IT HAS TO "FLOOR" THE ACCELERATOR IN ORDER TO CATCH UP. STILL ON THE UPHILL PORTION, IT THEN PROCEEDS TO OVERSHOOT THE SET SPEED AGAIN, BEFORE FINALLY SETTLING DOWN TO THE DESIRED SPEED. THIS CYCLE OF EVENTS REPEATS OVER AND OVER AGAIN AS ONE NEGOTIATES ROLLING HILLS WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL "ON." WHY IS THE INTERNAL LOOP DELAY SO LONG? WHY IS THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM NOT PROPERLY DESIGNED? (I HAPPEN TO HAVE EXPERTISE IN CONTROL SYSTEMS.) THIS CONTROL SYSTEM REALLY NEEDS TO BE RE-DESIGNED AS A MATTER OF PRIORITY! THE CRUISE CONTROL'S BEHAVIOR COULD THEN BE FIXED BY A SIMPLE FIRMWARE UPDATE. *JB

CRUISE CONTROL VARIES SPEED BY 7 MPH HOUR WHEN ENGAGED DURING NON FLAT TERRAIN CAUSING A SAFETY ISSUE WITH CARS FOLLOWING. WHEN ON FLAT TERRAIN THE CRUISE CONTROL MAINTAINS ITS TARGET SPEED WITHIN +- 1 MPH WITH NO PROBLEMS. THE SAFETY ISSUES OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE ENCOUNTERS ROLLING HILLS, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL ALLOW THE SPEED TO DECREASE BY AS MUCH AS 5 MPH WHILE DESCENDING DOWN THE HILL, THEN AS IT BEGINS TO CLIMB WILL AGGRESSIVELY ACCELERATE TO 2 MPH OVER THE TARGET SPEED. WHEN THE ROAD FLATTENS OUT AGAIN IT WILL MAINTAIN THE ORIGINAL TARGET SPEED. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, 70 MPH, THIS CAUSES SAFETY ISSUES ESPECIALLY WHEN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ARE MODERATE TO HEAVY IN THAT TRAFFIC FOLLOW WILL NOT HAVE ANY INDICATION THAT THE SPEED IS SLOW BY 5 MPH. THIS IN TURN WILL CAUSE A HAZARDOUS SITUATION WHERE A COLLISION COULD OCCUR. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND TOYOTA SUPPORT RESPONDED THAT ALL IS WORKING WITHIN PARAMETERS AND NO ADJUSTS ARE PLANNED.
