THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE HAND BRAKE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT'S COASTING AND HAVE NO TRACTION CONTROL. ALL OF THE SUDDEN, ALL LIGHTS TURN ON DASHBOARD AND CHECK VSC SYSTEM COMES ON, BRAKES ARE HARD TO ENGAGE AND STEERING CONTROL IS DIFFICULT. CAR DRIVES LIKE THAT FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND THEN ALL GOES BACK TO NORMAL. FEW DAYS LATER IT STARTS UP AGAIN WITH THE BREAK LIGHTS COMING ON AND OFF. IT HAPPENS DURING DIFFERENT DRIVING CONDITIONS: STRAIGHT CITY STREET, WHILE TURNING, GOING DOWN A HILL OR ATTEMPTING TO COME TO A STOP. THIS MAKES IT REALLY SCARY AS I AM IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN I AM TRYING TO BREAK AND THE BREAK DO NOT ENGAGE AND STEERING CONTROL IS AFFECTED. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO MECHANIC AFTER THE INCIDENTS AND THEY CANNOT DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE AND THERE ARE NO FAILURE CODES. HOWEVER, THE ISSUE KEEPS GOING ON MAKING ME TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THE CAR.

ON MY 2009 CAMRY HYBRID, AS I WAS GOING TO WORK, WHEN I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR THE BRAKES WENT HARD AND CAN'T STOP THE CAR TOTALLY I SAW THE BRAKE LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL, AND ABS LIGHTS TURNED ON, AND CHECK VSC SYSTEM DISPLAYED. I IMMEDIATELY SLOW DOWN THE CAR TOOK THE EXIT AND STOP THE CAR. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND START THE CAR AGAIN WHICH FIXED ALL THE ABOVE ISSUES. IT HAPPENED APPROX TWO WEEKS AGO AND TOOK THE CAR TO TOYOTA OF GRAPEVINE TX 76051 AND THEY DID NOT FIND ANY ISSUE RELATED TO BRAKE OR ANY CODE. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR AND TAKING THE CAR TO THE SAME DEALER TO CHECK AGAIN.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE (395N INTO DC) AND THE CAR'S BRAKES FAILED. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY DISPLAYED VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEM (VCS) FAILURE AND A NUMBER OF OTHER WARNINGS. I WAS FORCED TO SWERVE OUT OF TRAFFIC AND TO UTILIZE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR.

BRAKE COMES ON, ABS LIGHT COMES ON AND IT BECOMES DIFFICULT TO BRAKE (BRAKES ARE HARD). THEN AFTER AN HOUR OR SO THE LIGHTS GO OFF AND BRAKES RETURN TO NORMAL. I NOTICED THAT WHEN IT RETURNS TO NORMAL THERE IS A HEAVY BUMP, IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE SOMEONE BUMPED YOU FROM THE REAR. THIS HAS HAPPENED OFF AND ON FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS NOW. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC THINKING IT WAS SOMETHING MINOR, PADS ETC. AND IT WAS NOT THAT. ON 11/28/18 I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. NOT SURE WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE. THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME WITH NO WARNING, IT HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AND ALSO STARTING THE VEHICLE. MY PERSONAL MECHANIC DID FIND SOME INFORMATION THAT MAY PERTAIN TO THIS PROBLEM (WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM - ZE1 2007 - 2011 MODEL YEAR CAMRY HYBRID VEHICLES EXTENSION OF WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY AND SKID CONTROL ECU/BREAK PEDAL SENSOR) SERVICE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN REF# T-CP-ZE1, DATE OF ISSUE JULY 1, 2014.

WHEN I DRIVING BACK YESTERDAY JAN 1ST 2019 FROM FRIENDS HOUSE SUDDENLY THE CHECK VSC SYSTEM TURNED ON AND OTHER ICONS TURNED ON IN THE CAR DASHBOARD. I TRIED TO PRESS THE BRAKES AT A STOP SIGN AND THEY DO NOT ENGAGE OR THEY WOULD ENGAGE ON A DELAY, VEHICLE TOOK LONG TIME TO STOP. IT WAS HARD DRIVING BACK AND I WAS SCARED OF AN ACCIDENT HAPPENING EVEN AFTER TURNING ON EMERGENCY BLINKERS ON MY DRIVE BACK HOME. TOYOTA NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE IT AS IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT AT ABOUT 40 MPH (IN A 50 MPH ZONE ON A BACK ROAD) I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES WHEN APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. THE BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE. THE CHECK VBS SYSTEM WARNING CAME ON AS WELL AS ALL OF THE DASH BOARD WARNING LIGHTS. THE CAR WAS CHECKED AND THE BRAKE PADS WERE FINE, THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WAS NORMAL, AND NO COMPUTER CODES CAME UP WHEN THAT WAS CHECKED. THE BRAKE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND OFF AND THE BRAKES WORK MOST OF THE TIME, BUT OUT OF NO WHERE THEY WON'T ENGAGE. IT WAS VERY SCARY, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE MY KIDS WERE IN THE CAR. THANK GOODNESS I WASN'T GOING FASTER THAN I WAS BECAUSE I DON'T THINK WE WOULD HAVE STOPPED IN TIME.

UNKNOWN MY VEHICLE WAS MOBILE, AT THE NORMAL SPEED LIMIT OF 35MPH ON A CITY STREET, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL. BY THE TIME I FOUND A SAFE PLACE TO STOP MY ALL THE LIGHTS ON MY DASH WENT ON, WITH A WHIZZING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE.
DRIVING AT ABOUT 30 MPH ON A STRAIGHT ROAD 6AM APPROX. 1 MILE FROM MY HOUSE. I APPLIED BRAKES INTENDING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN THEN VSC WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND BRAKES DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. NO CARS IN FRONT OF ME, HAD TO PUSH HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW THE CAR. I MISSED MY INTERSECTION TO TURN. IT IS AS IF THE POWER SYSTEM TO THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. I SLOWED ENOUGH TO TURN THE CAR ONTO A SIDED STREET AND PUMPED THE BRAKES HARD, IT IS STILL DIFFICULT TO BRAKE, BUT AT LEAST I KNOW I HAVE TO APPLY HEAVY FOOT PRESSURE TO BRAKE. TURNED CAR OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN AND VSC LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, THEN TURNED OFF AFTER 1 MINUTE AND POWER BRAKING RETURNED TO NORMAL.

THIS WAS FOUND TO BE A BROKEN WIRE IN IN THE REAR OF THE CAR. NOW IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN AND THIS TIME THEY SAY IT IS THE REAR HARNESS THAT IS BAD AND IT IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. MOST OF THE 79 COMPLAINTS ARE FOR THESE PROBLEMS AND THERE IS YET TO BE A RECALL. THIS IS NUTS! DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GET KILLED BEFORE THE NHTSA DOES ANYTHING. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, ITS THE BRAKES!!! .

I HAVE BEEN FEELING FROM LAST 2 OR 3 DAYS THAT MY TOYOTA CAMRY BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING RIGHT AND THEY REQUIRED ADDITIONAL PEDALING TO BRAKE AND SOMEHOW I WAS ABLE TO FEEL THAT IT WAS TAKING EXTRA TIME AND DISTANCE TO STOP AND WAS PLANNING TO SHOW THIS TO TOYOTA DEALER TODAY , I HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS DURING PREVIOUS SERVICE WITH TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER DURING MY PREVIOUS SERVICE & THEY TOLD ME EVERYTHING WAS OK AND MY BRAKE PADS WERE GOOD,BUT UNFORTUNATELY MY FEARS CAME TRUE TODAY THEN WHEN I WAS DRIVING 20-25MPH AND SUDDENLY A CAR AHEAD OF ME ALMOST 20-25FEET AHEAD BRAKED AND I PUSHED HARD TO BRAKE BUT I COULD FEEL IT WAS NOT BRAKING RIGHT OR THE HYBRIDS BRAKING SYSTEM HAS FAILED AND MY CAR DIDN'T STOP IN THE RIGHT TIME AND WE HIT THE CAR AHEAD OF US.

REPEATED REQUESTS TO CHANGE BRAKE PADS, WHICH WAS INITIALLY THOUGHT TO BE THE PROBLEM BUT SEVERAL MECHANICS HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THIS WAS NOT THE ISSUE. CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS WHOM CONFIRMED THAT THERE IS NO RECALL. INSTEAD, OWNERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VISIT THEIR LOCAL DEALER ONLY IF A DASHBOARD WARNING BRAKE LIGHT IS LIT, WHICH WAS NOT APPLICABLE IN MY CASE ALTHOUGH A DEGREDATION IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS APPARENT. TOYOTA ONLY SENT A NOTICE REGARDING THE BRAKE-FLUID RESERVOIR TANK AND NO WARNING TO CONSUMERS OF A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK REGARDING A DEFECTIVE BRAKE SYSTEM THAT WORSENS OVERTIME. CURRENTLY HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME SELLING THE VEHICLE DUE TO SAME FEEDBACK/COMPLAINT OF SLOW BRAKE RESPONSE, WHICH WORSENS WITH HIGHER SPEEDS AND/OR SUDDEN STOPS. REPORTS OF EXTRA EFFORT IN BRAKE PEDAL APPLICATION, STRONG VIBRATION AND NOISE WHEN ATTEMPTING TO DO A QUICK STOP. THIS ISSUE HAS RESULTED IN THREE SEPARATE CAR ACCIDENTS WITH THREE DIFFERENT DRIVERS, WHEREIN TWO COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE AND ONE STRUCK AN OBJECT, ALL WITHIN A 2-MONTH PERIOD. CLAIMS WHERE FILED UNDER MY INSURANCE AND ALL DRIVERS WERE DEEMED TO BE AT FAULT, BUT TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE (1) DEFECT, (2) FAILURE TO NOTIFY CONSUMERS OF AN URGENT SAFETY RISK AND (3) FAILURE TO RECALL, DESPITE THE NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND ACCIDENTS WITH NHTSA. TOYOTA'S IMPROPER HANDLING AND FAILURE TO ACKNOWLEDGE A DEFECT IN THEIR PRODUCT WARRANTS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.

I CONTINUED TO COAST UNTIL A NEARBY STOP SIGN AND WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO BRAKE, TO MY HORROR THE BRAKES HAD AN ALMOST COMPLETE FAILURE. I IMMEDIATELY WENT HOME, LESS THAN A MILE AWAY AND THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO MALFUNCTION THE WHOLE WAY. I WAS ABLE TO STOP BUT ONLY WITH SEVERE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDDLE WHICH ONLY PRODUCED SLIGHT BRAKING. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. COMING BACK TO THE CAR THE NEXT DAY THE WARNING DASH LIGHTS WERE OFF AND VEHICLE WAS WORKING NORMAL AGAIN. HOWEVER, THIS ALSO HAPPENED THE FOLLOWING DAY HALFWAY THROUGH A SHORT TRIP ACROSS TOWN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED A RECALL PART, THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR. THEY CHECKED THE COMPUTER FOR CODES AND THESE CODES DID NOT SHOW UP IN THE CODE HISTORY DESPITE IT BEING 2 DAYS BEFORE. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN INTERMITTENT AND DID NOT HAPPEN THE DAY I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP INVESTIGATED & FOUND IT WAS CONSISTENT WITH THE PROBLEM COVERED BY THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM (POL14-04 OR NHTSA 14001) FOR THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY & SKID CONTROL ECU/BRAKE PEDAL STROKE SENSOR, & ALSO AN OPEN RECALL ON MY CAR FOR A SEPARATE ITEM WITH MY BRAKES. PART THAT FAILED IS THE STROKE SENSOR, WHICH CONTROLS THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKES. HAD THIS FAILED AT FREEWAY SPEEDS I AM UNSURE THAT I COULD HAVE SAFELY STOPPED THE VEHICLE OR AVOIDED A COLLISION. THIS SENSOR IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY BUT I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE AS ITS FAILURE IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. THIS PART (ACCORDING TO THE DEALER) DID NOT FAIL DUE TO ABUSE, NEGLECT OR LACK OF MAINTENANCE. *JB
