I own a 2007 Toyota Camry Solara with less than 70,400 miles. It’s up to date on maintenance and is garaged. In December 2020, while garaged, my entire dashboard cracked without warning. After researching the condition, I learned that hundreds of Camrys and Solaras were affected and that Toyota replaced some dashboards under an extended warranty program… one such ZE6 program expired in August 2020. I was not notified. Despite the tremendous safety issue (the entirety of the car’s electronics sits beneath the dashboard including the airbags which, if deployed, can hurl dashboard pieces throughout the interior and blind and disfigure driver and passengers alike). Incredibly, neither Toyota nor NHTSA has issued a recall. Toyota Corp/dealership will do nothing at their expense. I Iive in fear that if my car is bumped or tapped, I’ll be maimed by flying dashboard debris; this puts my passengers and pedestrians at risk as well. Please help me get my dashboard replaced before something unthinkable happens. Thank you.

THE DASH OF MY 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA BEGAN TO MELT AND CRACK IN 2012, CREATING AN EXTREMELY STICKY SURFACE AS WELL AS A SEVERE GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD. THIS HAS CONTINUED TO WORSEN OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. THE STICKINESS AND GLARE WORSEN WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES WHICH IS A CRITICAL ISSUE WHEN LIVING IN FLORIDA. EVEN WHEN I TRAVEL TO NORTHERN STATES IN THE WINTER, THE STICKINESS AND SEVERE GLARE DOES NOT COMPLETELY GO AWAY IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES. I CAN GENTLY TOUCH MY DASH AND LEAVE A FINGER IMPRINT AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR AND IN ANY TEMPERATURE. THE GLARE GREATLY REDUCES THE DRIVER'S VISIBILITY AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR HOWEVER, DURING THE HOTTEST MONTHS OF THE YEAR THE GLARE IS SO SEVERE THAT IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE WHAT IS AHEAD. I HAVE NEARLY BEEN IN ACCIDENTS AND HAVE COME CLOSE TO HITTING PEDESTRIANS IN PARKING LOTS BECAUSE OF THE SEVERE GLARE. I HAVE RESORTED TO "BOBBING AND WEAVING" TO FIND AN AREA OF THE WINDSHIELD I CAN SEE THROUGH (TYPICALLY A ONE-INCH AREA WHERE THE AIR VENT IS REFLECTING VERY LOW ON THE WINDSHIELD) OR EVEN ROLLING DOWN THE SIDE WINDOW TO STICK MY HEAD OUT DURING SITUATIONS SUCH AS THESE. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THAT THIS WILL CONTINUE TO WORSEN WITH TIME. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AND NEEDS TO BE RECTIFIED IMMEDIATELY! MY 2007 SOLARA HAS A VERY STICKY DASH TO THE POINT THAT IF I HAVE ANY PAPER ON IT, I HAVE TO PEEL IT OFF THE DASH WITH PIECES STILL STUCK ON THE DASH. IT IS SO SHINY AND PRODUCES SO MUCH GLARE THAT I HAVE TO WEAR UV SUNGLASSES WHEN DRIVING. THIS IS TERRIBLE. THE AMOUNT OF CRACKS ARE "GROWING" ON THE DASH. THIS WAS VERY NOTICABLE OVER A YEAR AGO, BUT I DIDNT UNDERSTAND THE EXTENT UNTIL I TOOK IT TO MY TOYOTA SERVICE AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. IT WAS REPORTED ON 10/10 & THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPT CAME BACK & TOLD ME THAT THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. I CAN TELL YOU THAT THIS IS MY FIFTH TOYOTA, INCLUDING A 98 CAMRY THAT I STILL OWN AND NONE OF THEM EVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. I AM EXTREMELY DISATISFIED THAT TOYOTA WILL NOW REPAIR THIS POTENTIAL HAZARD AND AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT, AS I NOW REALIZE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. *TR

I RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM A FRIEND. DID NOT REALIZE UNTIL AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR THAT THE DASHBOARD IS A LOT WORSE THAN I THOUGHT. IT IS GUMMY AND CRACKED ALL OVER. I BOUGHT THE CAR BECAUSE THE EXTERIOR LOOKS GREAT AND IT RUNS LIKE NEW, BUT THE DASHBOARD NOW APPEARS TO BE A REAL PROBLEM. THE DASHBOARD HAS BEEN STICKY FOR 3 YEARS, WITH A GLARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE WHEN DRIVING. I HAVE CONTACTED MY TOYOTA DEALER X3 DURING ROUTINE MAINTAINENCE AND HAVE TOLD THEM THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA SAYS THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS AND IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND I CAN HAVE IT REPLACED FOR MORE THAN $3,000.00. TOYOTA DENIES THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER PROBLEM. MY GLOVE COMPARTMENT HAS CRACKED AND SPLIT ALSO, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NOT OPENED THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT IN 1 YEAR. ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE DASHBOARD ON MY SOLAR BECAME STICKY AND STARTED TO CRACK IN MULTIPLE SPOTS. AFTER DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH ONLINE, I LEARNED THAT THE SOLARA AND OTHER TOYOTA MODELS HAD ISSUES WITH THE DASHBOARDS. I LEARNED THAT MY ISSUES WAS NOT ISOLATED. COUNTLESS OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS WERE REPORTING THE SAME ISSUE ONLINE. SHORTLY AFTER LEARNING THIS, I TOOK MY SOLARA TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR ASSISTANCE AND WAS TOLD "THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO FOR YOU". TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGED AND RECOGNIZED THE ISSUE WITH MY DASHBOARD - EVEN MADE MENTION OF CUSTOMERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE - YET REFUSED TO TAKE ANY ACTION. IN SUMMARY, I WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA THAT THE REPAIR COST OF MY DAMAGED DASHBOARD - DESPITE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE POOR QUALITY MATERIALS USED IN ITS CONSTRUCTION - WOULD NOT BE COVED BY TOYOTA. ADDITIONALLY, I WAS TOLD THAT THE COST OF A REPLACEMENT DASHBOARD WOULD COST AS MUCH AS $2000 AND THAT THE NEW DASH MY IN FACT ALSO SHOW SIGNS OF CRACKING SHORTLY AFTER INSTALLATION. PICTURES WERE TAKEN BY THE DEALERSHIP AND SUBMITTED TO TOYOTA DEMONSTRATING THE DEFECTS. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA REFUSING TO DO ANYTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I CONTACTED TOYOTA MYSELF AND SPOKE TO SEVERAL PEOPLE IN THE COMPANY VOICING MY CONCERNS AND DEMANDED SOMEONE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM AS I HAVE DONE MY OWN INVESTIGATION NOTING THAT EVERY TOYOTA OF MY MODEL AND AGE HAVE THE SAME ISSUES WITH THE DASHBOARD AND INTERIOR MELTING AND CRACKING. I WAS TOLD BOTH BY LETTER AND ON THE PHONE THAT MY CAR WAS OVER THE WARRANTEE AND THEY WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE . I TOLD TOYOTA THAT THIS WAS A SAFETY HAZARD AND THEIR PRODUCT WAS INFERIOR AND THAT MY 2002 HONDA ACCORD DID NOT HAVE ISSUES MELTING SO WHY SHOULD MY 2007 TOYOTA BE LITERALLY MELTING AND CRACKING. *JS

1.TWICE WITHIN 1ST YEAR: THE CAR ACCELERATED QUICKLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD; IT WAS HARD TO STOP. I THOUGHT THE FLOOR MAT WAS UNDER THE GAS PEDAL. LATER, THE CAR SUDDENLY REVVED UP AND ACCELERATED AS I WAS LEAVING A PARKING LOT. AFTER I TOOK MY FOOT OFF OF THE GAS, IT KEPT INCREASING SPEED. NOTHING WAS IN THE WAY OF THE PEDAL THAT TIME. I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL. (THE SERVICE TECH TOLD ME THE EXPERIENCE I RELAYED TO HIM WAS NOT POSSIBLE.) STILL, THE CAR ACCELERATES BY ITSELF, MOST RECENTLY THREE DAYS AGO. I HAD IT SET AT 60 MPH ON CRUISE CONTROL. IT WOULDN'T STAY AT 60. I HAD TO DECREASE THE CRUISE SPEED 3 OR 4 TIMES. I ROUTINELY HAVE TO MANUALLY REDUCE THE CRUISE CONTROL SPEED BY BUMPING THE LEVER DOWN. I HAVE BECOME USED TO THIS MALFUNCTION. TOYOTA EMPLOYEES DENIED A DEFECT AND REFUSED TO REPAIR THE FAULTY PARTS. DURING THE FIRST 18 MONTHS, I TOOK MY CAR IN APPROXIMATELY 20 TIMES. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. 2.RAIN ENTERS ABOVE THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW. ODI ID NUMBER:10242104 HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED BECAUSE OF THE SAME COMPLAINT ON THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL. 3.THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE DURING THE FIRST 6 MONTHS I HAD THE CAR BECAUSE THE TIRES IN THAT POSITION DAMAGED QUICKLY FOR NO LEGITIMATE CAUSE. I HAD TO BUY A WHOLE SET OF TIRES BEFORE THE CAR HAD 18,000 MILES ON IT BECAUSE THEY WERE WEARING SO BADLY THAT THEY WERE UNSAFE. THIS COINCIDES WITH ODI ID NUMBER:10269039 CITING THE SAME PROBLEMS ON ANOTHER 07 SOLARA CONVERTIBLE. 4.THE SOFT TOP HAS UNRAVELED IN TWO PLACES ABOVE THE FRONT WINDSHIELD AT THE SEAM WHERE IT IS SEWN TOGETHER. TOYOTA'S RESPONSE HAS VARIED FROM: NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, I MUST HAVE DAMAGED IT, AND IT ISN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. 5.THE ELECTRONIC SEAT STUCK. IT WAS LEFT IN A FORWARD POSITION (AS IF TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE BACK SEAT). THE TECH SAID THE CAR DIDN'T HAVE POWER SEAT FUNCTIONS. I TOLD HIM I'D PAID FOR ONE ON MY ITEMIZED BILL AND I'D BEEN USING IT. UNREPAIRED, IT RESUMED WORKING BY ITSELF WEEKS LATER. *TR
