BOTH FRONT DOORS CANNOT OPEN EITHER FROM EXTERIOR NOR INTERIOR WITH KEY. KEYS WORK FINE. LATCH/DOOR KNOB BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE DON'T WORK AND NO SAFE EXIT OF VEHICLE EXCEPT THROUGH BACK DOOR. DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE $500 PER DOOR PLUS OTHER DIAGNOSTIC FEES TO FIX. I WOULD ALSO HAVE TO HAVE CAR TOWED IN FOR THEM TO DO DIAGNOSTICS ON IT. STATED THEY WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE THE DOORS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND I FEEL THAT TOYOTA SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER STATED THAT THIS HAS TO BE HANDLED BY THE TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE. I CALLED THE CORPORATE OFFICE AND THE CUSTOMER AGENT STATED THAT THIS IS NOT TOYOTA'S PROBLEM AS THE CAR IS NOT UNDER ANY WARRANTY.

THE HYDRAULIC STRUTS USED TO TO HOLD THE HOOD OPEN FAILED AGAIN. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN 5 YEARS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED. WITHOUT WARNING OR ANY INDICATION, THE HOOD CAME DOWN WHILE I WAS CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL. IT ALMOST CRUSHED MY HANDS. I HAD THE STRUTS REPLACED 5 YEARS AGO WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I CONTACTED TOYOTA ON 7/23/01 AND ASKED IF THEY OR THEIR DEALERS HAD RECEIVED SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. THEIR RESPONSE, ON THE SAME DAY WAS, "NO" (FYI THE TOYOTA INCIDENT # IS 010723-000028). THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND CAN SEVERELY INJURE PEOPLE WORKING UNDER THE HOOD - WHICH IS RATHER HEAVY AND COMES DOWN WITH MUCH FORCE. THERE IS NO SAFETY ROD OR WARNING DEVICE TO LET ONE KNOW WHEN THESE STRUTS ARE READY TO LET GO. I SENT TOYOTA AN E-MAIL PERTAINING TO THIS MATTER. I WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO FORWARD IT AND THEIR RESPONSE IF YOU DESIRE.*AK

HOOD ASSEMBLY IS HELP OPEN BY GAS PISTONS. WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT THE CAR IN 1994 THE ENGINE HOOD WOULD STAY UP FOR 10 TO 15 SECONDS AND THEN COME CRASHING DOWN SUDDENLY. THERE WAS JUST ENOUGH TIME TO GET YOUR BODY UNDER IT. I GOT STRUCK ON THE LEFT SHOULDER THE FIRST TIME. I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER AND THEY CHANGED THE GAS PISTONS. THIS WAS 6 YEARS AGO. SEVERAL WEEKS AGO THE SAME THING HAPPNED TO ME. I LIFTED THE HOOD. IT STATYED UP. I WENT TO CHECK THE OIL AND THE HOOD CAME CRASHING DOWN ON ME. FORTUNATELY I GOT OUT OF THE WAY. THE HOOD IS VERY HEAVY AND IT FALLS FAST. THE BAD THING IS THAT IT STATS UP AT FIRST AND THEN SUDDENLY CRASHES DOWN ON YOU. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SERIOUS HURT SOMEONE.
WHEN IT RAINS WATER LEAKS INTO THE TRUNK AREA THROUGH THE REFLECTOR PANELS, CAUSING THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO SHORT OUT. THE PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER REPLACED THE REFLECTOR PANELS AND DRILLED HOLES IN THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUNK LID. THE CONSUMER IS STILL EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. *AK
