I purchased a used 2008 Camry but I didn’t know about the sticky dashboard defect. It’s a hazard to drive this car because of the extreme sun glare, which impedes my vision.

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the dashboard needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The dashboard of my 2008 Toyota Camry is shining/reflecting from the windshield, making it clear visibility very difficult for the driver. I called Toyota they mentioned they had a warranty extension for a limited period and now they are not covering/fixing it anymore. It should be a "SAFETY RECALL" and all owners should be sent a notice to get the factory defective product fixed. My daughter was involved in a crash on Feb 14th, 2023 because visibility was very seriously constrained because the dashboard was reflecting from the windshield. The padded dash panel has failed so that it cannot provide impact protection because of hard material that has chipped and cracked. The dealer inspected the problem and gave me a repair estimate of $2800.00. I complained to Toyota and was told that the extended dash warranty ended in 2018. Prior to failure, the dash was sticky but not chipped and cracked. Why is Toyota allowed to stop any warranty or compensation for dash impact protection on my 13 year old vehicle?

WHEN I BOUGHT MY CAR, THE PASSENGER SUNVISOR WOULDN'T STAY UP. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS ABOUT A $500-$600 PART & HE WASN'T GOING TO PAY TO FIX IT. DURING AN ACCIDENT IN NOVEMBER OF 2015 I RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THE AIRBAG NOT INFLATING OR THE SEATBELT ENGAGING. I SPOKE WITH THE BODY SHOP AS TO WHY NEITHER SYSTEM WORKED AS DESIGNED, THEY COULD NOT ANSWER THIS QUESTION. THEY BELIEVED THAT THE SENSORS WERE COMPRESSED TO ENGAGE THE AIR BAGS BUT IT DID NOT ENGAGE. THEY ALSO NOTED THAT WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES THE SEATBELTS SHOULD HAVE LOCKED WHICH WOULD HAVE KEPT ME STATIONARY INSTEAD OF ALLOW ME TO HIT THE DRIVER DOOR JAM ABOVE THE STEERING WHEEL. BOTH VEHICLES WERE IN MOTION. THE VEHICLE THAT HIT ME MADE A LEFT TURN INTO MY FRONT LEFT QUARTER PANEL DAMAGING THE ENTIRE PANEL AND PART OF THE FRONT DRIVER DOOR.

TURNS AROUND TO SEE TWO FOUR-INCH DIAMETER HOLES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BACK WINDOW. THE ENTIRE BACK WINDOW EXHIBITS FRACTURING. WITHIN FIVE MINUTES, NINETY PERCENT OF THE BACK WINDOW HAS DISINTEGRATED INTO PIECES. NO ONE IS NEAR THE CAR. NO EVIDENCE OF PROJECTILES IN OR AROUND THE CAR. AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS IN THE SEVENTIES. WEATHER WAS RAINING. DRIVER HAD ENGAGED THE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER PRIOR TO SPONTANEOUS SHATTER. DEFOGGER WAS OFF AT THE TIME OF SHATTER. AIR CONDITIONING WAS NOT ON PRIOR TO SHATTER. MILEAGE 62250. MY DASHBOARD IS MELTING. I AM NOT SURE EXACTLY WHEN IT STARTED BUT I NOTICED A VERY BAD GLARE ON MY WINDSHIELD A COUPLE OF YEARS AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM UNTIL TODAY WHEN I SAW A NEWS ARTICLE ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. NOT ONLY AM I CONCERNED ABOUT THE LACK OF VISIBILITY DUE TO THE GLARE, I AM ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF TOXIC FUMES FROM THE MELTING DASHBOARD INSIDE MY VEHICLE. I BOUGHT MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY IN SEPTEMBER 2012 AND SHORTLY AFTER THE DASHBOARD STARTED MELTING. IT IS NOW VERY STICKY AND CONTINUES TO MELT. BECAUSE OF THE MELTING, THE WINDSHIELD PRODUCES A GLARE AND MAKES DRIVING VERY DIFFICULT DURING THE DAY. I CANNOT DRIVE UNLESS I AM WEARING POLARIZED SUNGLASSES, WHICH HELPS MINIMIZE THE GLARE. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE CONSTANT GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD FROM THE REFLECTION OF THE MELTING DASHBOARD. WHEN PULLING INTO A GRAVEL PARKING SPACE AT LESS THAN 5MPH. CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FULL THROTTLE, JUMPED A CONCRETE PARKING STOP, BECAME PARTIALLY AIRBORNE ON THE RIGHT SIDE , COMING DOWN IN A DEPRESSION AFTER 25 FT. BRAKE WAS FULLY DEPRESSED THROUGH EVENT. VISUAL INSPECTION AND MANUAL CHECK AFTER INCIDENT SHOWED NOTHING IMPEDING EITHER GAS PEDAL OR BRAKE. MATS FIRMLY ATTACHED. WE HAVE PHOTOS OF THE ACCELERATION TRACKS AND THE DITCH WHERE IT LANDED. DAMAGE TO FASCIA, BUMPER, AIR DAM. ALIGNMENT, POSSIBLE TIRE DAMAGE. EST. $800 - $1200. OUR COMPLAINT IS CAR SAT AT DEALER FOR 2 MONTHS DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE OUTCOME WAS THAT NOTHING WAS RECORDED ON THE BLACK BOX AND VEHICLE PASSED INSPECTIONS ON A LIFT. THEREFORE EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE TOYOTA WILL DO NOTHING. RECOMMENDATION FROM BOTH CONSUMER REPORTS AND EDMUNDS IS A BRAKE OVERRIDE SHOULD BE INSTALLED. WHEN THIS WAS MENTIONED THEY SAID NO THE CAR DOESN'T NEED IT. SAID," OH DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, I'M SURE THERE WILL BE A RECALL BECAUSE WE ARE SEEING IT ON LOTS OF CARS. MY DAUGHTER IN LAW HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON HER 2007 MODEL. BOTH OF OURS WERE GRAY IN COLOR. THEIR REP ACKNOWLEDGED THEY RECOGNIZED OTHER OWNERS HAD REPORTED AN ISSUE WITH THE DASH BUT UNLESS THE CAR WAS UNDER ORIGINAL WARRANTY, THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. THE REP ALSO NOTED TOYOTA DETERMINED THE CAUSE TO BE "ENVIRONMENTAL" AND PRIMARILY OCCURRING IN FLORIDA, WHERE I LIVE. IN RESEARCHING OTHER OWNERS COMPLAINTS ON-LINE, THIS ISSUE IS CLEARLY SYSTEMIC. THIS STARTED AFTER THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED ON THE VEHICLE AND MY EXTENDED WARRANTY PURCHASED DOES NOT COVER TRIM FOR THE VEHICLE. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE INTO TOYOTA FOR ROUTINE SERVICE FOR SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE DASHBOARD. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM FOR THESE VEHICLES AND THEY HAVE ALREADY CHANGED MULTIPLE DASHBOARDS. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM TO RESOLVE (1100 FOR PART AND 660 FOR LABOR), AND TO CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO SEE IF THEY WOULD HELP RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. AFTER A REVIEW BY TOYOTA THEY SAID THEY WOULD PAY FOR THE PART BUT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LABOR. I WAS TOLD THAT DUE TO THIS NOT BEING A RECALL THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED TO OFFER ANYTHING BY LAW. DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR BECAME LOOSE AND EVENTUALLY FELL OFF. THERE WAS NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY, NO ROUGHNESS, JUST NORMAL USE. LOOSE ONE DAY AND WOULD NOT HOLD IN PLACE (EITHER UP OR DOWN). FINALLY FELL OFF IN MY LAP. TOYOTA SAID THEY WERE AWARE OF OTHER COMPLAINTS, BUT WOULD NOT FIX FOR FREE BECAUSE OF EXPIRED WARRANTY. REPLACEMENT COSTS +$120.00. I FOUND NUMEROUS OTHER CUSTOMERS ON LINE WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED FOR CUSTOMERS. WHY WOULD SO MANY FOLKS HAVE THE VISOR SUDDENLY FALL OFF? *JS

A FEW DAYS AFTER I TOOK POSSESSION OF MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY, THE SPLASH GUARD CAME OFF. I WAS TOLD THAT (1) I HAD GONE OVER SOMETHING AND PULLED IT OFF, OR (2) THE FACTORY MAY NOT HAVE TIGHTENED THE BOLTS ENOUGH. THE DEALER TIGHTENED THE BOLTS. A FEW MONTHS LATER, THE SAME THING OCCURRED. THIS TIME, I NOTICED THAT THE WHEELS WERE HITTING THE SPLASH GUARD WHEN I TURNED SHARPLY. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM BUT ALL THE DEALER DID WAS TIGHTEN THE BOLTS AGAIN. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE BOLTS WERE TIGHTENED, I NOTED THAT THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN I TURNED THE WHEEL SHARPLY. I FINALLY HAD A FREE DAY AND BROUGHT THE CAR IN AGAIN AND TOLD THE DEALER THAT THE SAME THING WAS HAPPENING. AGAIN, I AM BEING BLAMED FOR GOING OVER THINGS IN THE ROAD AND THEY REFUSE TO LOOK INTO THE SITUATION. I AM TRYING TO AVOID A DANGEROUS INCIDENT.
