I drove my son’s 2009 Toyota Camry recently and encountered a serious safety concern. When driving into direct sunlight, visibility was significantly impaired due to intense glare reflecting off the dashboard and onto the windshield. The reflection made it difficult to clearly see the road ahead. This is not a cleaning or maintenance issue. The dashboard surface is no longer matte as designed. It has become glossy and reflective due to the well-documented Toyota “melting” or “sticky” dashboard defect that affected many 2009-era Toyota and Lexus vehicles. As the dashboard material degrades, it creates a reflective surface that directly contributes to dangerous glare while driving. This condition presents a genuine safety risk, particularly during sunrise and sunset, when glare is already a known driving hazard. Unfortunately, I understand that Toyota’s warranty enhancement program for this issue has expired, despite the defect continuing to pose a safety concern. I wanted to formally document this issue as a visibility and safety hazard and request guidance on whether Toyota will address this condition given its direct impact on safe vehicle operation.
The dashboard has turned into a sticky residue that reflects a blinding glair and is hazardous to see & drive. Toyota has declined to extend the recall warranty to replace the dash even though this is a hazard and has nearly caused accidents. Please help me get Toyota to make good on replacing.
My son wrecked cause of the stickiness of the dashboard the light reflected and he was in an accident . You guys mailed the safest notice to his grandmother at a assisted living facility and I have proof she didn’t get mail there so my son shouldn’t have to suffer we have already put a new motor in it and can’t deive
My grandma bought a 2009 Toyota Camry well kept she passed away in 2019 and she gave me the car what I read second owner has a 10 warranty they said there was a safety recall on the dashboard she was in a nursing home facility and that where her mail went and she was Bedfast and we have proof of that the dashboard is so sticky there is so much glare from it I’ve wrecked and I know the time frame has past but I read the owner had 10 years it is such a great car but I can’t drive it please help me I can provide proof of everything but I’m scared I will get killed

My vehicle has been a one owner vehicle, my mother and now me as she passed on 2 April 2024. My vehicle has been stored in a garage except when it is being driven. My vehicle has been taken care of extremely well and maintenance done as required. The oil has been changed every 3,000 miles since it has been owned. Approximately in June 2024 I began to notice my dashboard was sticky, cracking and actually MELTING! It gets worse as long as it is out of the garage,in the heat/sun and humidity for any length of time. The longer times goes that the car is in these conditions it gets shiny that the reflection makes a glare which makes seeing difficult! I went to the dealership where the vehicle was purchased brand new, Milton Ruben, Augusta GA 30907. Prior to going to the dealership, I got online to do a search to see why this could be happening and discovered many complaints like mine all over the US had been submitted in previous years.I began reading the complaints and discovered the problem was due to Toyota using defective material to make their dashboards in Toyota/Lexus vehicles made in 2007-2011.I discovered there had been a recall or campaign for these vehicles, it had been extended once or twice until 2019.MY PROBLEM IS THAT I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION OR DID MY MOTHER!We would have immediately taken our vehicles into the dealership.I CANNOT HELP THAT THE RECALL OR CAMPAIGN FOR THIS ISSUE HAD EXPIRED PRIOR TO MY CAR SHOWING A PROBLEM!While reading the complaints I noticed there was a class action lawsuit filed,but I don't know the outcome.I was told by the dealership that they were aware of the problem but there wasn't anything they could do except replace the dashboard at my expense.TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!!They told me that I would need to call the corporate office to see what they could do.I did, submit a claim, file #240802000525 2 Aug 2024.Toyota didn't reply but was told by the case manager that my case was closed without action. UNACCEPTABLE!!!!
I bought my 2009 Camry on [XXX] new in Kentucky and have had this vehicle up to the current date of 08-02-2024. In fact, I recently acquired my deceased (2 April 2024) mother's 2009 Camry and will be submitting a claim as well. My vehicle has only been owned by myself and taken extremely good care of and stored in a garage when not being driven. Approximately in June/July 2024 I began noticing that my dashboard was becoming sticky, as though it was actually melting!!!! It would get worse as long as it was out of the garage and was in the sun, heat and humidity. Also, I discovered there had been a recall or campaign for the 2007-2011 Camry. It had also been extended until 2019. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION NOR HAD MY MOTHER OR I WOULD HAVE ALREADY LOOKED INTO THE MATTER EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T HAVE THE PROBLEM UNTIL NOW!!!!! I was told by the dealer to call corporate. I did and was told to submit a claim, which I did, file#[XXX] on 31 July 2024 and received a response on 1 August 2024 that there wasn't anything Toyota could do because the campaign had expired and it would be at my own expense to get repaired. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! I CAN'T HELP THAT MY PROBLEM DIDN'T START UNTIL THE CAMPAIGN EXPIRED OR I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF AN ISSUE!!!! IT IS DEFECTIVE MATERIAL AND UNSAFE ISSUES DUE TO THE PROBLEM!!!!!!! I've been into automobile accidents and the passenger airbag never deployed. Few years back I took my vehicle for the sticky dashboard recall, Toyota replaced it. Few years later the dashboard is sticky and shiny worst than the first time, I called Toyota to get it replaced free of charge and they told me that is not the responsibility and denied to fix the replaced sticky dashboard. I almost have gotten in accidents do to the shiny glare from the dashboard.
I was driving the vehicle and hit a bump, and the driver side sunvisor dropped down into the sunshield position. I almost got in an accident because I couldn’t see and then I couldn’t get The sunvisor to stay up. This is the fourth sunvisor we have bought from Toyota. All of the three other sunvisors have done the exact same thing and I feel this is dangerous. The people at Toyota confided in me that this is a big problem with many Toyota’s. I am concerned that had my wife been driving she would have gotten in an accident because the sunvisor obstructed the view of the driver. Toyota to charge us $270 for both driver and passenger side sunvisors. Our mechanic put them in for free.
I am not complaining about my vehicle, but about the many vehicles on the road today with headlights that are not focused enough, or just TOO BRIGHT. Especially vehicles like pickup trucks that have headlights mounted at about the same height as my windshield and rear window. These vehicles headlights are so bright that they hit all my mirrors and blind me at night from behind. In addition many newer vehicles with "modern style" extra bright and auto dimming headlights as oncoming traffic also blind me to the point where I cannot safely see the road ahead. I appreciate that seeing ahead is important, but with oncoming traffic it is also important that I can see ahead safely as well. Thank You.

Dashboard is sticky when cold and hot, we have done our best to keep it clean but i have had enough it was hot and my kid leaned on it and it was super hot and the material literally got stuck to her arm and the back of her shirt. I would like this to get taken care off, is not right that they were created this way and people suffer the consequences
My Black 2009 Camry SE has a black sticky/melting dash which Toyota only covered replacement of for a 10 yr period. I didn’t drive it much for the first several years, the odometer now has only 90,000 miles. The sticky dash became an increasingly noticeable safety hazard a couple of years ago. When driving with the sun hitting the sticky, melting, shiny black dash, the glare is blinding to where I cannot see the road. The sun causes the dash to be reflected off the windshield. Yes, the safety of anyone in the car is at risk when the sun is coming through the windshield. It is available for inspection any time. The Rick Hendrick Toyota dealer I used for my cracked dash 4 Runner informed me that if I had been having the Camry regularly serviced at a Toyota dealer then Toyota would have likely covered the dash replacement after the recall period ended. I brought the Camry into Stone Mountain Toyota to replace the recalled brake lamp assembly in Nov 2021. They failed to replace it adequately and so a mile from the dealership the Camry would not move after I stopped at a stoplight. So, no, I have not had either of these Toyota dealers, or any others confirm the issue, since they weren’t going to replace it under warranty anyway. Neither dealer asked to confirm the issue. My wife has confirmed the sticky dash safety glare issue. No warning messages light up when the dash is a safety hazard. Toyota Corp refused to warranty/recall replacement in 2020/2021 even though I explained this safety issue. Today, Dec 7, 2022 I called Toyota Corp again and they again refused to cover replacement of the dash under warranty/recall and referred me to NHTSA.

I currently a 2009 toyota camry I was financed a year ago not even a year ago. from TKP autos in eastlake, ohio. this car consumes too much oil, so I use marvel mystery oil so every 2300-3k miles I have to change the oil.. also my key fob stopped working, i changed the batteries and they still dont work also the o2 sensors went as well and replaced them twice and they still keep stop working also i found a lot of information on consumer reports that the years 2007-2009 toyota camrys are highly unreliable cars to own or lease. ive seen a lot of complaints and other owners who had the engine sieze on them as well.. these cars are a lemon and not safe to drive also my dash board is very sticky as well from the sun and it turns out that is a melting affect that is dangerous as well also i see the accelerator pedal can give away and that is dangerous as well there should be recalls for the oil consumption and everything else.

The vehicle dashboard is tacky and has been for some time. The reflection from the sun emitting off the dashboard impairs visibility while driving. Even wearing sunglasses does not fully deflect the sun glare from the dashboard making it difficult to see cars in front of me or traffic signals. I believe this issue because the dashboard is so hot, it affected my CD player which is no longer working, a cd is stuck in the player and the button to eject does not respond. Yes my vehicle can be inspected upon request. A few years ago, I inquired with a licensed mechanic what the issue was and he stated there was nothing I could do to remedy the situation. I contacted Toyota when I first realized the issue, they stated that there was a recall on the dashboard and the time had past to get it replaced. I informed them that I did not receive a recall notification and they could not tell me why. I am very frustrated that Toyota will not take responsibility for replacing my dashboard.

I am the original owner of a 2009 Toyota Camry. The dashboard which started melting in 2020 has caused a shiny film on the dashboard resulting in a shiny glare on my windshield when the sunlight hits the dashboard. This glare completely covers a portion of the windshield which prevents me from viewing the roadway ahead of me. Toyota has entered settlements ( extending its' warranty to Mid 2017 )several lawsuits, but does live up to its' agreement. Toyota has breached settlement agreement by not providing the Toyota Dealers with dashboard replacements in timely manner. Since my dashboard did not start deteriorating until 2020 I have been informed by Toyota that since the warranty time period has expired, that they will not pay for the cost to replace the dashboard. deterioration was a latent defect. Time for NHTSA to get involved: Investigate and then issue a National recall of the dashboards. Whittier Toyota will be inspecting the vehicle Monday July 19 2021 and will issue me a report of the deteriorating dashboard and cost to replace it. WHILE DRIVING, ON BRAKING, THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A GRINDING/RUBBING NOISE APPEARING TO COME FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE NOISE SEEMED AS IF THE VEHICLE ENGINE/MOTOR WAS GOING TO SEIZE UP OR SOMETHING WOULD BREAK INSIDE. SLOWLY TOOK IT TO A LOCAL TIRE KINGDOM REPAIR SHOP WHO WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ONCE THEY STARTED THE VEHICLE AND WERE ALARMED BY THE ENGINE NOISE. ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO AN ENGINE REPAIR SHOP. SLOWLY, CAUTIOUSLY DROVE HOME AND PARKED. ON STARTING THE VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE, NEXT DAY, THE ENGINE SEEMS TO RUN FINE ON PARKED AND NEUTRAL. ON SHIFTING TO DRIVE OR REVERSE THE RUBBING/GRINDING NOISE BEGINS AGAIN. HAVE BEEN RESTRAINED TO SITTING AT HOME INSTEAD OF DOING MY RIDE SHARING AND DELIVERY WORK. RECENTLY HAD THE TIMING CHAIN AND CAM SHAFT GEAR REPLACED.

WE HAD NO DASHBOARD PROBLEM AT THE TIME SO THERE WAS NO REASON TO CONTACT TOYOTA. NOW WE HAVE A PROBLEM! THE GLARE AND ODOR FROM THIS ISSUE IS NOW A SAFETY AND HEALTH ISSUE. ANOTHER CONCERN IS HOW THIS DASHBOARD ISSUE AFFECTS THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND THE AIRBAG UNDERNEATH. TOYOTA SHOULD ADDRESS AND REPAIR THIS ISSUE. I DO NOT CARE IF A VEHICLE IS 5 DAYS OLD, 5 YEARS OLD, OR 50 YEARS OLD, A STICKY, MELTING DASHBOARD SHOULD NEVER BE A PROBLEM. PLEASE ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM!

NEITHER I RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION FROM TOYOTA DEALERSHIP OR NONE IN THE SERVICE CENTER CHECKED WITH ON THIS ISSUE OR TOLD ME THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AND HENCE NEED TO BE REPLACED AS THEY DID WITH UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE AND POWER WINDOW SWITCH MALFUNCTION. NOW I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS DASH STICKINESS ISSUE AND TOYOTA IN HAWAII IS REFUSING TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE AND SUBSTANDARD PRODUCT THAT THEY HAS PUT IN AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE AS THEY HAVE DONE FOR MILLIONS OF OTHER CUSTOMERS. THE REASON DOE REFUSAL IS THAT MY CAR JUST PASSED 10 YEARS SINCE IT WAS BOUGHT. BUT HAD I BEEN KNOWN OF THIS ISSUE BEFORE EVEN EXPERIENCING IT, I WOULD HAVE GOT IT REPLACED. I HAD BEEN TAKING MY VEHICLE REGULARLY TO TOYOTA SERVICE, BUT NONE BOTHERED TO CHECK ON THIS. SINCE IT IS NOT MY ISSUE AND IT IS BECASUE OF THEY USING A DEFECTIVE PART, THEY SHOULD HELP ME IN REPLACING IT COMPLETELY AT THEIR EXPENDITURE. I AM WITH MY FAMILY AND I AM VERY MUCH CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY AND RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ISSUE AS IT COULD EMIT CHEMICALS BECAUSE OF MELTING OR CHANCES OF FIRE ACCIDENT. THE DASH TURNS TO MUSH IN THE HEAT AND IT IS VERY, ALMOST MALLEABLE. FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT, IT CREATES A GLARE THAT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE FROM THE DRIVERS POINT OF VIEW AND FURTHERMORE THERE'S BEEN REPORTED PROBLEMS WITH THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYING BECAUSE OF THE MELTING DASH. I HAVE BEEN THE SOLE OWNER OF THIS CAMRY. BACK IN 2015 I TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE AND BROUGHT UP TO THE TECHNICIAN THAT THE DASHBOARD WAS STICKY. AT THE TIME THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO ABOUT IT AND REPLACING IT WOULD COST ME A LOT OF MONEY. NOW 4 YEARS LATER I FIND OUT THAT THERE WAS A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT THAT COVERED THE DASHBOARD. MY DASHBOARD IS NOW SO STICKY THAT IT IS GLISTENING. I TRIED TO USE A SUN VISOR HOPING IT WOULD SLOW THE RATE OF MELTING BUT THEN MY SUN VISOR WOULD STICK TO THE DASHBOARD. I PLACE A HAT ON THE DASHBOARD ONCE FOR 10 MINUTES AND WHEN I REMOVED IT THERE WAS BLACK RESIDUE. FINALLY, I HAVE A CHILD NOW AND WHEN HE GETS INTO THE CAR HE HAS PUT HIS HANDS ON THE DASHBOARD AND GOTTEN THE BLACK DEBRIS AND CHEMICALS ON HIS HANDS AND I AM NOW CONCERNED FOR HIS HEALTH AND SAFETY. TOYOTA CORPORATE AND MY DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE IN MY CASE ("1 DAY OR 1 MILE OVER WARRANTY AND WE WON'T HELP"). WHEN CHALLENGED, TOYOTA COULD NOT CONFIRM LETTERS WERE MAILED TO ALL AFFECTED OWNERS, ONLY THAT AN EFFORT WAS MADE TO SEND LETTERS TO SOME OWNERS IN 2015. MY INTERIOR HAS BEEN DETAILED RRC AND THE SMELL WHEN NOT GO AWAY. I CONTACTED TOYOTA BECAUSE THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS LAWSUITS AND RECALLS IN THE PAST. I WAS TOYOTA WILL NOT FIX BECAUSE THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED. IF ITS CREATES UNSAFE DRIIVING CONDITIONS, HOW CAN THEY PUT AN EXPIRATION ON THE FIX. ON MY LAST VISIT I INSISTED THEY MAKE NOTE OF THE PROBLEM DUE TO DANGEROUS GLARE BEING REFLECTED OFF THE DASHBOARD ONTO THE WINDSHIELD. I STATED IT WAS A GRAVE SAFETY ISSUE. THE LETTER STATED THEY NEEDED TO ACQUIRE ENOUH PARTS TO FIX THE CARS AND DO NO CONTACT THE DEALER TO WAIT FOR A NOTICE TO BRING YOUR CAR IN. THE SMOKE DISSIPATES AFTER THE CAR WARMS AND AS LONG AS THE CAR IS WARM, IT WILL NOT SMOKE. IT ONLY SMOKE WHEN THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN OFF FOR OVER 2-3 HOURS. I WAS TOLD BY A CERTIFIED TOYOTA MECHANIC THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE DUE TO FAULTY INTERNAL PARTS. HE STATED IT WAS THE REASON FOR SUCH A HIGH LEVEL OF OIL CONSUMPTION. I DISCOVERED THAT TOYOTA IS CURRENTLY RECALLING CERTAIN ENGINE BLOCKS DUE TO OIL CONSUMPTION DEFECTS, HOWEVER MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT PART OF THAT RECALL AS OF NOW. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA, MY VIN COULD EVENTUALLY BECOME PART OF THE RECALL (OIL CONSUMPTION RECALL) BUT AS OF NOW, IT IS NOT. LAST YEAR ON AUGUST 2012, MY CAR STOP RUNNING AND I BROUGHT TO ONE OF THE MECHANIC THAT TOWED AND FIXED MY WATER PUMP. THIS YEAR, I BROUGHT MY CAR TO TOYOTA DEALER FOR SOME RECALLS AND FIND OUT THAT MY ANTIFREEZE IS ENTERED TO MY WATER PUMP AGAIN AND NEED TO REPLACE WITH NEW ONE... TOTAL COST WILL BE MORE THAN 650.00 DOLLARS. I WONDER IF THERE ANY RECALL FOR THIS MATTER BEFORE OR DO I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE SAME PROBLEM EVERY YEARS!!! PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM. THANKS *TR

PRIOR TO THESE INCIDENTS, THE VEHICLE WAS CHECKED BY THE DEALER ON THEIR RECALL. I WAS TRAVELING ON A 2 LANE HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON. I APPROACHED A SLIGHT INCLINE IN THE ROAD AND THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTED AS NORMAL. TACHOMETER WENT FROM 2000 RPM TO 3000 RPM. THEN SUDDENLY THERE WAS A SUDDEN UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATION IN WHICH THE ENGINE REVVED UP TO 4500 RPM AND THE ENGINE WAS SCREAMING AS THOUGH IT WAS ABOUT TO BLOW APART. MY FOOT WAS NOT IN CONTACT WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE FLOOR MAT HAD BEEN REMOVED PER THE DEALER INSTRUCTIONS. I IMMEDIATELY PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WHICH STOPPED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. IF THIS HAD BEEN ON A WET HIGHWAY OR IN TRAFFIC THERE WOULD SURELY HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT. THIS SAME INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED 4 TIMES WITHIN THE LAST 6 MONTHS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPORTED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG AND THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. AFTER SEVERAL CONVERSATIONS WITH TOYOTA, THEY SAID THAT THEY WILL MAKE A RECORD OF MY INCIDENTS BUT, TOYOTA WILL DO NOTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS HAD TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE COMPUTER/SOFTWARE CONTROLLING IT.

LEAKING FRONT STRUTS: I REPORTED THE FINDING TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER (SCOTT TOM TOYOTA, NAMPA, IDAHO) AND ALSO CALLED THE MAIN TOYOTA CUSTOMER CENTER. THE LOCAL DEALER'S SERVICE ASSOCIATE CONFIRMED THE EXISTENCE OF THE LEAKAGE. I WAS TOLD THE AMOUNT OF THE LEAKAGE IS "SMALL," "NORMAL," NO NEED TO REPAIR AT THIS POINT, AND IF I WANT TO HAVE IT REPLACED THEN ITS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. I BELIEVE LEAKING STRUTS ISSUE IS VERY COMMON TO TOYOTA CAMRY AND MAY POSE POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUE.

2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. CONSUMER EXPRESSES DISCONTENT WITH RECALL SERVICES AND WOULD LIKE A SERVICE DESCRIPTION DETAILING WHAT WAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE AND AN HONEST ANSWER AND INFORMATION ABOUT THIS RECALL *TGW THE CONSUMER TOOK HIS VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. HOWEVER, HE WAS INFORMED THAT A SOFTWARE UPDATE HAD BEEN DOWNLOADED TO THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SYSTEM BECAUSE THE VEHICLE DID NOT NEED A SHIM FOR THE GAS PEDAL, BECAUSE IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN JAPAN. THE DEALER REFUSED TO GIVE THE CONSUMER A SERVICE DESCRIPTION OF THE DETAILS OF WHAT WAS DONE ON THE VEHICLE. *JB
