The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact became aware that the dashboard had melted due to the high outside temperature. The contact stated that the melted dashboard felt sticky and slimy. The melted dashboard impaired the contact's vision while driving. In addition, the contact stated that fumes from the melted dashboard material were hazardous when inhaled. The dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 36,600.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that the dashboard needed to be replaced. The mechanic related the failure to Toyota Campaign Number: ZE6. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the same assessment was made. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the campaign had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.

Sticky Dash and peeling paint for tainted paint color 040/ that of which my car was painted with 040 Super White - I have documentation proving the pain code at time of purchase. Toyota over the telephone says it goes by the VIN number - but Toyota’s website states completely the total opposite - it states any vehicle painted with paint color 040 from 2008 -2017 model is eligible for a paint re- do?

My 2010 Camry has become incredibly unsafe to drive or be in due to the dashboard melting. There is an unbelievably unsafe glare caused by the dashboard reflecting sunlight and the more the dash melts the more intense the glare becomes. There is also a smell that renders the vehicle almost worthless on hot days and causes headaches. This is on top of not being able to clean the dashboard because you cannot touch it with anything. All bugs and any dust that land on the dashboard live there permanently. You cannot wipe it with anything. Your finger prints stay on the dash with the lightest touch and often it becomes so hot you cannot touch it without potentially burning yourself. The dash melting is a safety hazard to everyone on the roadways. There are likely millions of cars with this defective dashboard that have not been repaired. I have contacted Toyota several times, including executives and high ranking corporate employees, and they say that they will not replace or help with this defective and unsafe cheap component that they used in order to increase their margins. The problem has been acknowledged by Toyota but they failed to contact an incredibly high number of owners that are affected. I first noticed the glare in 2014 and it has gotten progressively worse. I took the vehicle to a toyota dealership twice (2016/2023) and they refused to fix the defective dash both times. They expect owners to pay $3,500-$5,000 for a dashboard repair on a vehicle that has 100k+ mile life left yet is only worth around $5,000. They are essentially totaling cars that owners have worked hard to maintain and get the most out of. Toyota is stealing 10+ years of vehicle life from many consumers and placing the burden of their profit margins increasing onto consumers that buy toyotas because of their longevity and reliability.

Dear Representative. I am submitting a complaint as per Request #605168 Replacement of stick dashboard by Toyota. I have 2010 Toyota Camry and I am the original owner. I have sticky dashboard problem since 2012/2013 and so recently I was just looking around to replace it as now bugs and other things started sticking on it. During my search I found that Toyota has this as recall in 2015/2017 and so I reached out to them for replacement. They rejected my request stating that they had sent me 2 letters notifying about the replacement and I had not responded. I responded back to Toyota confirming that I have not received any letters from Toyota in regards to dashboard. If I had received letters, why would not I replace it. I would like to request NHTSA to investigate the issue further as I asked Toyota if they had any proof to show that I have received the letter and they did not respond to it. Thank you.

THIS CAR HAS REQUIRED 6 SETS OF TIRES IN LESS THAN 90,0000 MILES. THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW WILL ROLL DOWN WHEN PRESSING THE BUTTON TO ROLL IT UP. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE FIRST OIL CHANGE. THE AIR CONDITIONER OCCASIONALLY SWITCHES ITSELF FROM RECYCLED TO FRESH AIR WHILE DRIVING FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. SENSOR IN PASSENGER SEAT MALFUNCTIONS CAUSING RANDOM ALARM ABOUT SEATBELT WHEN NO ONE IS SEATED THERE. THE DASHBOARD BECAME STICKY TO THE TOUCH, AND CLOTH WOULD STICK TO IT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO WIPE IT CLEAN. THE DASHBOARD THEN DEVELOPED SEVERAL DEEP CRACKS, RUNNING ERRATICALLY LY FROM FRONT TO BACK. IN PLACES AROUND TRIM PIECES, DASHBOARD PLASTIC HAS FLAKED AWAY. PLASTIC ON THE TOP OF THE CONSOLE'S LID HAS CHIPPED AND FLAKED AWAY, AND CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED AROUND IT. PAINT ON TRIM OF CONSOLE HAS BUBBLED UP AND RUINED THE FINISH IN CONSOLE DRINK HOLDER LID. THE CD PLAYER MALFUNCTIONED, WITH A DISC READ ERROR REPORTED, THOUGH NO DISC WAS INSIDE THE PLAYER, REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF SYSTEM. THE AUX AUDIO PORT FAILED AFTER ONLY A YEAR OF REGULAR USE. THE FLOOR MATS HAD TO BE REMOVED DUE TO THE ACCELERATION RECALL AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT DEALERSHIP WANTED TO PROVIDE RECALL SERVICE LIMITED TO SECURING THESE WITH A ZIP TIE. CARPETING BECAME STAINED AND FILTHY, AND COULD NOT BE EFFECTIVELY CLEANED, SO CARPETING HAD TO BE REPLACED BY OWNER. RECALL NOTICES RECEIVED FROM TOYOTA BY THE OWNER HAVE BEEN EXPRESSLY LIMITED TO WEIGHT CAPACITY RATING STICKER, ALTHOUGH THIS WAS TOYOTA FINANCED VEHICLE AND OWNER'S ADDRESS REMAINS UNCHANGED. A FEW DAYS AFTERWARD I REALIZED THE CENTER TRUNK AREA, THAT HOLDS THE SPARE TIRE, HELD 2 TO 3 INCHES OF WATER, AND THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRUNK ALSO HAD WATER. I HAVE READ POST AFTER POST ONLINE STATING MANY OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, AND SOME HAVE STATED THE REAR WINDOW AND BODY PANELS WERE NOT SECURELY SEALED FROM THE OUTSIDE ELEMENTS WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS ASSEMBLED AT THE FACTORY. IN JUNE OF 2014 WATER WAS GETTING INSIDE ON THE CARPET ON THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE SOAKING THE CARPET COMPLETELY. THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSATION DRAINAGE TUBE HAD PLUGGED UP UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE THAT CAUSED THE INTERIOR BY THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE TO BE SOAKED IN WATER. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS EVER INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE ODOMETER JUST RECENTLY TURNED OVER 45,145 MILES. I'VE HAD IT CHECKED TWICE BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIM EVERYTHING IS FINE AND IT'S JUST THE ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FUNCTIONING. HOWEVER, THIS CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. IT FEELS UNSAFE TO ME, AND I DON'T BUY THEIR EXPLANATION. AFTER GOOGLING THE PROBLEM, THERE SEEMS TO BE OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM ON THE SAME CAR. IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT THE ROTOR IS TOO SMALL FOR THE INCREASED CAMRY SIZE AND THUS BECOMES WARPED. THIS ALSO SHOULD BE EXAMINED AND REPLACED FREE OF COST BY THE MANUFACTURER IF THIS IS THE CAUSE. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE DEALER ABOUT POSSIBLY HAVING A WIRE MESH INSTALLED OVER THE AIR INTAKE TO PREVENT ANY FUTURE RODENTS FROM ENTERING THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT ALTHOUGH THE FAILURE WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE IN HER YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL, HE WOULD HAVE TO GET AUTHORIZATION FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO PERFORM THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING AUTHORIZATION FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,500 AND THE CURRENT WAS UNKNOWN.

AGAIN, SERVICE ADMITTED RADIAL PULL. THEY REBALANCE THE WHEELS, AND REALIGNED THE CAR AND THAT DIDN'T CORRECT THE PROBLEM. DEALER PUT 4 NEW TIRES AND REALIGNED. PROBLEM CONTINUED. CAR IS NOT SITTING ON THE FRAME PROPERLY BUT SERVICE WILL NOT ADMIT IT. TOOK CAR TO SERVICE AGAIN ON 2/13/10. AGAIN A 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS PERFORMED AND DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. TOOK TO SERVICE AGAIN 3/8/10 COMPLAINED THAT CAR ISN'T DRIVING PROPERLY, I HAVE TO HOLD MY STEERING WHEEL A CERTAIN WAY TO KEEP THE CAR DRIVING STRAIGHT. WENT FOR A TEST DRIVE DUE TO THE DISTORTION, WOBBLING OF CAR AND WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTA TIRES ROLL FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. INCREDIBLE! THE CAR ACCELERATES WHEN COMING TO A STOP AND STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED TO THE LEFT TO GO STRAIGHT. ONE SIDE OF THE CAR IS HIGHER THAN THE OTHER. WHEN I ASKED WHAT WAS DONE TO THE CAR, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY MADE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AND WAS DISMISSED. PEOPLE DRIVING BEHIND ME FLASH THEIR LIGHTS AT ME AND I'VE BEEN STOPPED AND TOLD THAT MY CAR IS CROOKED . I CAN FEEL IT AND SEE THE SAME THING. SERVICE INFLATED MY TIRES TO OVER 42PSI'S. THAT'S TOO MUCH AIR. THIS CAR IS STILL DRIFTING TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT DEPENDING UPON WHICH WAY THE TIRES ARE MOVING FROM "LEFT TO RIGHT", IN WHICH I WAS TOLD THIS IS A TOYOTA THING. INSULTING! I FEEL THIS WAS DONE IN ORDER TO MASK WHATEVER THE REAL PROBLEM IS. I TRADED A 2004 CAMRY THAT HAD THE SAME ISSUES. I HAD OVER 30 ALIGNMENTS, 4 BRAKE JOBS, A STEERING SHAFT REPLACED AND 4 SETS OF TIRES IN 4 YRS. I HAVE DOCUMENTATION ON THAT CAR. THIS CAR IS DOING THE SAME THING. FEEL UNSAFE. *TR

I AM REQUESTING THAT DOT NHTSA INVESTIGATE THE DRIVER'S CONTRIBUTION TO UNINTENDED ACCELERATION (UA) AND TOYOTA'S ACCELERATOR/BRAKE PEDAL DESIGNS THAT MAKE IT POSSIBLE. I WAS DRIVING A RENTED TOYOTA CAMRY IN A PARKING LOT. I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO GAIN SPEED. I PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE AND IT ACCELERATED. THE HARDER I TRIED TO STOP THE CAR THE FASTER IT WENT. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE FOR A MOMENT AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING. I BELIEVE THAT MY FOOT WAS ON BOTH THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDALS. I MEASURED THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR AND FOUND THAT IT WAS ONLY 1.5 INCHES. MY VEHICLE A GM ACADIA IS 2.5 INCHES. THIS MADE ME THINK THAT THE TOPS OF THE TWO PEDALS ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. I MANAGED TO FIND 6 DIFFERENT TOYOTA MODELS INCLUDING THE PRIUS AND THEY AVERAGED 1.5 INCHES BETWEEN THE TOPS OF THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDALS. I MEASURE COMPETITIVE VEHICLES AND FOUND THEY AVERAGED 2.2 INCHES. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE TOYOTA DESIGNS ' THEY ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER. I HAVE CONTINUED TO INVESTIGATE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND HAVE COLLECTED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF DATA THAT SUPPORTS THE FACT THAT THE DRIVER IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF UA AND THAT SOME VEHICLE DESIGNS MAKE IT POSSIBLE. I HAVE CONDUCTED DRIVING TESTS AND SIMULATED THE CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE UA. THEY CLEARLY IDENTIFY THAT TOYOTA PEDAL DESIGNS CONTRIBUTE TO THE DRIVER BEING A CAUSE OF UA. GOOD VEHICLE PEDAL DESIGNS MAKE IT VERY DIFFICULT TO SIMULTANEOUSLY AND UNINTENTIONALLY DEPRESS BOTH PEDALS. FROM THE ODI INCIDENT REPORTS GM VEHICLES SEEM TO BE PARTICULARLY INSENSITIVE WHILE THE FORD 150 TRUCK SEEMS TO HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING IN THE PEDAL DESIGNS OR OPERATION THAT MAKES THIS POSSIBLE. I HAVE READ TWO OLDER DOT REPORTS CONCERNING UA AND THEY INDICATE THAT THE DRIVER IS A CAUSE OF UA. I BOUGHT 2010 CAMRY COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO AND HEAR A HEAVY WIND NOISE FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE. I AM TOLD BY TOYOTA REP THAT IT IS A DESIGN ISSUE AND THERE IS NOTHING CAN BE DONE. BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES AND FRONT OF THE CAR IS IDENTICAL. IF IT WAS A DESIGN ISSUE THEN WHY NOISE ON RIGHT SIDE ONLY. NOT SURE IF SOMETHING GOING TO LET LOOSE. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT WHERE MY CRUISE CONTROL IS AT 5' O'CLOCK STEERING WHEEL IT RESET IS UP AND HIT MY LEG CAUSING THE CAR TO RUN UP WITH OUT ME KNOWING WHY. THIS HAS HAPPEN TWICE.
