I am reporting a safety-related issue involving the ECM / torque converter on my 2012 Toyota Camry. This issue can cause loss of power, hesitation, or stalling which presents a serious safety concern while driving. The issue impacts drivability and can result in sudden loss of acceleration or engine stalling, especially at higher speeds or during merging. This creates an increased risk of collision for myself, passengers, and surrounding vehicles. I have experienced some scary occurrences with shuddering at high speeds, hesitation while near other innocent vehicles and stalling. I was never notified by Toyota about this recall or service campaign while it was active. I maintain current registration information and would have had the issue addressed immediately. Toyota acknowledged the campaign but refused support due to expiration, despite my lack of notice. I contacted Toyota and was instructed to file a complaint with NHTSA. Toyota declined to repair the issue under goodwill or policy exception. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether this defect should have been classified as a safety recall and whether consumers were properly notified. Sudden loss of power or stalling presents a significant safety risk and may warrant additional remedies or extension of the campaign for affected owners who were not notified.

"I was driving when the passenger airbag light came on and wouldn't turn off. At the same time, my steering wheel locked up, and my car started making a whining/humming sound. The lights began blinking on and off, and the battery light came on, even though the battery was brand new. Finally, my car completely shut off while I was driving in the middle of the street." A few years ago, I encountered a similar situation when a new computer component was installed, but they had trouble identifying the issues. It ended up costing me over a thousand dollars for problems they weren't certain about. Each time they added more parts, it turned out that it wasn't the solution. I'm hesitant to take it back to the dealership for fear of facing the same issues again. I plan to file a formal complaint and seek advice or assistance regarding this issue. Upon reviewing previous complaints, I noticed several similarities. I was never contacted by anyone regarding the recall on the airbag issues, and I would like this to be rectified immediately.

I own a 2012 Camry LE with about 70,000 miles which is in excellent condition and well-maintained. Recently I began to hear a rattle, tapping or knocking sound apparently from somewhere in the left engine or cabin area. I feel confident its sources is possibly a steering column issue. You sort of feel it whenever you have some rough road surface; and if it’s a bump you hear the metal knock. While it doesn’t appear to cause a steering malfunction. The issue or noise does seem to come from the steering column. Independent research on the web has indicated that countless queries have been reported about this same year vehicle and issue. Described as a small $10 plastic part that degrades thereby allowing the vibration or knocking noise to appear. Cost to repair again is $10 for part and 7-8 hour labor roughly $950 from the actual dealer to repair. The steering column u joint is loose and needs to be replaced. This is going to require the entire steering shaft to be replaced and taken apart.

Drivers side steering wheel has a clicking clunking sound and appears this is a well-known issue with this year car that Toyota has never addressed some type of silicone, bearing or washer war wears out, but the whole column must be removed to replace it from what I see it’s like $1000 I have Toyota do it for a $20-30 part

When I first purchased the car I unlocked the lever to adjust my steering wheel and from that moment further my car never drove the same. If I do not play with the lever for the tilt steering and move steering wheel up and down while driving my car does not drive normal. The tires either feel like they were laying down flat when making a turn either way to the left or the right and the car seemed to be at a different position than my steering wheel was. I changed my lower control arms, inner tire rods(Front), outer tire rods(front),This is all since January of 2022. I contacted the dealership immediately when I began noticing the problem and they told me nothing was wrong with the car and they couldn't not help me. Now when I am driving it sounds like a belt shifted on a tire but hasn't or something is rubbing. My steering wheel shakes when braking, and my steering wheel is really tight. If I put my traction control on off and drive it somewhat drives better but the rubbing sounds from the front still appears. If I play with the tilt lever and move steering wheel in and out or up and down I can feel the transmission almost like releasing from straining but never feels as if it is straining if that makes since. The lever for tilt steering is sometimes really loose like it is about to fall off but other times it is so tight that I am afraid it will snap if I lock it back. No one seems to understand what is the issue at the mechanic shops I brought it too. And I am so scared of driving it that I have parked it since august because I am afraid for my safety and my childrens safety. I have heard and read about other camrys this year model having similar issues. One time my abs light and traction lights came on during my drive and then went off moments later. If I dont play with the lever and tilt steering during a drive, the steering wheel while shake, car wobbles and sounds like mud tires are on it, and the car glides all over the road and turns make as if tires flat.

On 2/18/23 I took my car into the repair shop to investigate a clunking sound upon braking. The control arm was broken and the level of corrosion is extensive. I am the original and only owner and the car has never been out of Florida or on the beach or immersed in water. Toyota of North America in Plano, TX said they could not receive my pictures and that there was no one at Toyota that I could send documents to. They said if there was a recall I would be notified.

Clicking noise in steering (damper for caused by a small plastic part which is defectively designed, and disintegrates). This is a very common defect in 2011-2017 Toyota Camrys. The part is only about $5, but labor is $750 because the whole steering assembly has to be taken apart. My Camry started making the rattling noise when it had 40,000 miles. The noise is getting progressively worse and may cause steering issues eventually. I have not had it fixed yet. See part # below, and see youtube videos on the issue, which is very common. Steering. I HAD TROUBLE STARTING MY CAR, SO I RECEIVED A JUMP. MY CAR STARTED UP JUST FINE AND WAS DRIVING NORMALLY. AFTER ABOUT 2-3 MINUTES, I HAD NOTICED THE EPS LIGHT POP UP ON MY DASH. AT THAT POINT, MY CAR BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER. I HAD TO PULL THE WHEEL HARD TO CHANGE LANES A D EVEN HARDER TO BE ABLE TO MAKE ANY TURNS. AFTER ABOUT ANOTHER MINUTE OR TWO, ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS IN MY DASH IT UP, AND THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. I WAS UNABLE TO START IT AT THAT POINT OR TURN THE WHEEL. I RECEIVED A JUMP START AGAIN, AND THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED. THE CAR DROVE NORMAL FOR A FEW MINUTES. THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT AGAIN. THEN ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH FLASHED, AND THE CAR DIED AGAIN. THANKFULLY I WAS NOT ON A MAJOR ROAD EITHER TIME THAT IT HAD DIED.

I RECENTLY TOOK MY 2012 TOYOTA CAMRY SE IN FOR THE REPAIR ON MY SWAY BARS AND I HEARD A RATTLING NOISE IN/NEAR MY STEERING WHEEL/COLUMN. I THEN TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE LOWER STEERING SHAFT REPLACE BUT THE RATTLING NOISE WAS THERE AND WAS GETTING WORSE. I TOOK MY CAR TO ANOTHER CERTIFIED MECHANIC FOR A SECOND OPINION AND HE SAID THAT THE POWER STEERING ELECTRICAL COMPONENT SYSTEM WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. I FEAR FOR MY LIFE AND GET OVERLY ANXIOUS WHEN I DRIVE BECAUSE ONCE YOU GET TO AT LEAST 30 MPH IT SOUNDS LIKE THE STEERING WHEEL IS GOING TO COME. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID FOR ME TO BRING IT BACK IN BUT THEY HAVE TRIED TO DIAGNOSIS THREE TIMES. THIS IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. I ALSO HAD THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER STRUT AND SHOCK, AND MOUNT ASSEMBLY REPAIRED.

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET AND TURNING, THE STEERING SUDDENLY "FROZE" (POWER ASSIST FAILED) AND A STEERING WHEEL WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. CAR WAS DRIVEN HOME AND THEN TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR INVESTIGATION. AFTER INVESTIGATING, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PIG VOLTAGE WAS LOW (11 VOLTS) AND FLUCTUATED WHILE TURNING. UPON REMOVAL OF LOWER DASH AND STEERING COLUMN, FOUND NO BOLT IN GROUND WIRE FROM EMPS ECU. INSTALLED A BOLT AND RESECURED GROUND WIRE TO INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY BAR, AND THEN VOLTAGE WAS NORMAL AND STEERING WAS NORMAL DURING ROAD TEST. COULD NOT LOCATE ORIGINAL GROUND BOLT.

AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE CAR CONSTANTLY WANDERS TO THE LEFT AND/OR RIGHT REQUIRING CONSTANT STEERING CORRECTIONS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE CAR DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE AT SPEED. INITIALLY I THOUGHT IT THE CAUSE WAS CROSS-WINDS BUT THE PROBLEM HAPPENS ALL THE TIME EVEN ON CALM DAYS WITH NO WIND. I HAVE ALSO DISCARDED ROAD SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS/ANGLE AS THE PROBLEM OCCURS WHILE DRIVING ON DIFFERENT ROADS. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS CAR AS A CERTIFIED TOYOTA USED CAR WITH 3675 MILES. AT SPEEDS ABOVE 50 MPH THE CAR CONSTANTLY WANDERS FROM RIGHT TO LEFT REQUIRING CONSTANT STEERING CORRECTION. THIS IS VERY TEDIOUS TO THE DRIVER AND CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN ATTEMPTING TO KEEP THE VEHICLE WITHIN THE DESIGNATED LANE OF TRAFFIC. ALL TIRES ARE INFLATED TO FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS AND THE CAR IS PROPERLY ALIGNED. THIS IS A NEW VEHICLE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON LINE RELATED TO THIS TOPIC AND VEHICLE. I CONTACTED BOTH A TOYOTA DEALER AND TOYOTA U.S.A. AND BOTH HAD NO RECORDS OF COMPLAINTS AND OR RECOMMENDED ACTIONS TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE. THE CAUSE OF THIS IS MOST LIKELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE EPS (ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING) WHICH TOYOTA STARTED TO INSTALL INTO THE CAMRY IN 2012. EPS HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED AS HAVING A NUMB FEELING AND IN SOME CASES WANDERING STEERING. UNFORTUNATELY, I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS WHEN ACQUIRING THIS 2012 CAMRY. PREVIOUS TO THIS CAR I LEASED A 2011 CAMRY WHICH DID NOT HAVE EPS AND NO SUCH WANDERING STEERING. AS I WAS DRIVING 30 MPH, MY POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT WENT ON AND MY POWER STEERING FAILED. THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME SO I STOPPED MY CAR AND RESTARTED IT AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO TURN RIGHT ONTO A SIDE STREET AND THEN IMMEDIATELY IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE AND PARKED MY CAR. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES, I STOPPED THE CAR AND STARTED IT AGAIN AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT BACK HOME (LESS THAN A MILE) WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY WERE VERY RESPONSIVE TO MY CONCERN ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH WITH MY 4-YEAR OLD CHILD IN THE CAR. AFTER I DROPPED OFF MY CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY RAN AN INSPECTION AND FOUND A CODE C1554 POWER SUPPLY RELAY FAILURE AND REPLACED MY POWER STEERING ECU ASSY. ALTHOUGH I'M GLAD THIS FIX WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, I WILL ALWAYS HAVE ANXIETY ABOUT IT FAILING AGAIN ESPECIALLY SINCE I'VE READ OTHER REPORTS OF STEERING FAILURES IN 2012 TOYOTA CAMRYS. THE CAR PULLED TO THE LEFT AND I STRUCK AN ONCOMING VEHICLE.THE DAY WAS CLOUDY BUT DRY. THERE WERE NO EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES. BOTH CARS WERE TOTALED. THIS IS THE 5TH CAMRY WE HAVE OWNED SINCE 1994 AND WE HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH EVERY ONE EXCEPT THIS ONE. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE DRIVING THIS CAR ON THE ROAD, BUT ESPECIALLY IN MINNESOTA WINTER DRIVING. MY FIRST IMPRESSION WAS THE FEELING OF DRIVING A REAR WHEEL DRIVE CAR ON ICE. THE CAR SQUIRMS LIKE IT IS ABOUT TO LOOSE CONTROL AND GO INTO A SPIN, OR LIKE THE REAR OF THE CAR WANTS TO MOVE SIDEWAYS. I AM A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER 59 YEARS OLD AND CONSIDER MYSELF AN EXCELLENT DRIVER IN ALL CONDITIONS AND HAVE BEEN DRIVING IN MINNESOTA WINTERS ALL MY LIFE. I HAVE A TOYOTA CAMRY SE 2012 (4-CYL) WHICH I BOUGHT ON 08/29/2012. ON 12/31/2012 (THE ROAD WAS CLEAR AND DRY, IT WAS A CLOUDY DAY, NO RAIN, SNOW, ICE ON THE ROAD) WHILE STARTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP LIGHT, TURNING INTO A LANE, AFTER I STOPPED PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR KEPT GETTING FASTER AND FASTER (THE GAS PEDAL DIDN'T GET STUCK AND MY FOOT WASN'T ON IT), WHEN I STARTED TO TURN INTO A LANE, THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL LOCKED UP AND TO AVOID A CRASH I HAD TO TURN THE WHEEL TO THE OTHER SIDE, I ENDED UP DOING A DIAGONAL SKID INTO THE OTHER LANE, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO STOP AND STRAIGHTEN IT OUT AND KEEP GOING. SINCE THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL LOCKED UP THE CAR JERKED ME PRETTY HARD AND MY NECK AND ARM STARTED TO HURT SINCE THEN AND I AM SCHEDULED TO TAKE PHYSICAL THERAPY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM FOR SERVICE (FROM 1/2/2013 - 1/10/2013) AND AFTER I PICKED IT UP I'VE BEEN HAVING THE RPM STICKING AT 1.3 ALL THE TIME SO NOW IT'S WORSE THAN WHEN I HAD IT LAST. THE CAR DOESN'T FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE AND I DON'T WANT TO PUT MY LIFE OR OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES AT RISK. AFTER CALLING TOYOTA AND EXPLAINING ALL OF THIS THEY TOLD ME TO GO TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER SAYS THAT TOYOTA IS THE ONE THAT CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT, THE DEALER'S ONLY RESOLUTION IS TO ACCEPT THE CAR AS A TRADE IN AND ROLL OVER THE RESIDUAL VALUE INTO A LOAN FOR ANOTHER CAR, BUT IT ISN'T MY FAULT SO I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY MORE IN PAYMENTS FOR A CAR AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE PAYING FOR A CAR THAT'S NOT SAFE FOR ME OR MY FAMILY TO DRIVE. BEFORE THE INCIDENT ON 12/31/2012 I HAD TAKEN IT IN TO THE DEALER FOR THE SAME REASON, BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS THAT THE TIRES WEREN'T GRIPPING ON DRY ASPHALT, THE DEALER TOPPED OFF THE AIR AND SAID IT WAS FINE, BUT THE CAR KEPT DOING THE SAME THING AND I DIDN'T REALIZE IT WAS ACCELERATING ON IT'S OWN UNTIL WHAT HAPPENED ON 12/31/2012. *TR

THE CAR IS VERY DIFFICULT TO KEEP IN A STRAIGHT LINE, PARTICULARLY AT 70 MPH AND WHEN DRIVING IN THE PASSING LANE ON THE OPEN HIGHWAY. I MUST CORRECT MY STEERING CONSTANTLY, TO KEEP THE CAR FROM TRYING TO GO LEFT. IF YOU LOOK AWAY FOR JUST A MOMENT, YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF BEARING LEFT WITHOUT EVEN THINKING ABOUT IT. MY DEALER HAS BEEN FULLY COOPERATING SO FAR, BUT THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY CORRECTION OF THE PROBLEM. I HAVE TAKEN TEST DRIVES WITH THEIR SERVICE PEOPLE, AND EVEN HAD THE TOYOTA FACTORY SERVICE REP DRIVE THE CAR WITH ME. HE ORDERED THE TOW IN TO BE ADJUSTED AND THE TIRES ROTATED. HAD THAT DONE A FEW DAYS AGO AND NOW THE CAR CONSTANTLY NEEDS PRESSURE ON THE WHEEL, TOWARD THE RIGHT, TO KEEP IT GOING STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD. IT IS MOST NOTICEABLE WHILE YOU ARE IN THE PASSING LANE AT 70 MPH. YESTERDAY I MADE A TRIP TO A CITY ABOUT 90 MILES AWAY. COMING HOME I WAS IN THE LEFT LANE MOST OF THE TIME. I ENDED UP WITH A REALLY BAD CRAMP IN MY LEFT ARM FROM HOLDING CONSTANT RIGHT PRESSURE ON THE WHEEL FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. YOU DON'T DARE LOOK ANYWHERE BUT STRAIGHT AHEAD AS YOU MUST CONSTANTLY KEEP THE STEERING CORRECTED TO STAY IN YOUR LANE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUES AS YOUR TOTAL ATTENTION MUST BE GIVEN TO KEEPING THE CAR IN A STRAIGHT LINE. IF YOU ARE DISTRACTED, FOR EVEN A MOMENT, OR LOOK TO EITHER SIDE YOU END UP QUICKLY DRIVING OUT OF YOUR LANE. NOT A GOOD THING, PARTICULARLY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT 70 MPH! IN THE MEAN TIME, THERE APPEAR TO BE MANY OF US OUT THERE HAVING THIS SAME DRIVE-ABILITY PROBLEM, AND THERE IS NOT YET ANY SOLUTION FROM TOYOTA THAT CAN BE APPLIED. I ENCOURAGE OTHER WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM TO KEEP PURSUING TOYOTA FOR A SOLUTION. THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR FOR THEIR ELECTRIC STEERING ASSIST, AND IT REALLY DOES NEED TO HAVE SOMETHING DONE TO ALLEVIATE THIS VERY UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITION. *TR

MY 2012 TOYOTA CAMERY SE LIMITED EDITION WANDERS ALL OF THE TIME. THE CAR NEVER TRACKS STRAIGHT. ALSO NONE OF THE NOSE BODY LINES MATCH. I HAVE BROUGHT BACK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, TARBOX TOYOTA, RI, AND WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR WAS TEST DRIVEN. ALSO THAT THE CAR WAS IN SPEC. ALTHOUGH I WAS NEVER PRESENTED WITH ANY DOCUMENTED PAPERWORK. AS FOR THE BODYLINES I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WASN'T A BENTLY. THAT NONE OF THE BODYLINES ON ANY CAR MATCH. I FEEL AS THOUGH I WAS BRUSHED OFF. *TR

I AM UNABLE TO STAY IN CONTROL OF THE STEERING. IT SEEMS TO GO WHERE IT WANTS. CAR VEERS TO THE RIGHT OR THE LEFT AND I AM CONSTANTLY HAVING TO RE-ADJUST THE STEERING. PROBLEM MORE NOTICEABLE IN WINDY CONDITIONS. DEALERSHIP SAYS THEY HAVE HAD NO SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE CAMRY SE. THEY HAVE DONE 4 RE-ALIGNMENTS AND REPLACED THE TIRES AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. SEEMS REASONABLE THAT IF NOT CORRECTED, THE PROBLEM WILL ONLY GET WORSE TO THE POINT OF BEING EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN WINTRY WEATHER. *TR

I WENT TO PICK UP MY VEHICLE ON SEPTEMBER 3, 2012. ON THE WAY I FOUND THE VEHICLE WAS RIGID AND THE SUSPENSION WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. WHEN CAR HIT VARIOUS IMPERFECTIONS IN THE ROAD THERE WAS A BANGING NOISE AND THE CAR WOULD VIBRATE. I FELT DIZZY AS DURING MY TIME SPENT DRIVING CAR. THE CAR SEEMS UNSAFE TO USE. THIS SHOULD NOT OCCUR ON A VEHICLE THAT COST $31K AND ON THE FIRST DAY THAT I AM DRIVING VEHICLE. IN ADDITION THE STEERING FELT MORE WEIGHTED ON THE LEFT AS OPPOSED TO THE RIGHT. WHEN I TURNED LEFT THERE WAS GREATER RESISTANCE. I CONTACTED THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER THAT SAME DAY AND HE INDICATED HE FELT IT MAYBE A TIRE PRESSURE PROBLEM. HE THEN STATED THAT I SHOULD BRING THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO SEE WHAT THE ISSUE IS. I LATER DISCOVERED THAT THE RADIO SOUND FLUCTUATED. I HAD CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CONFIRM MY APPOINTMENT AND DISCOVERED THAT AN APPOINTMENT WAS NEVER MADE. I NOTIFIED TOYOTA MAIN OFFICE AND THEY PROVIDED ME WITH A CASE # [XXX]. THE MAIN OFFICE AT TOYOTA INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER. I WILL BE GOING TO ADVANTAGE TOYOTA IN VALLEY STREAM, NY ON 9/8/12. PLEASE HAVE SOMEONE INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE REGARDING THE SUSPENSION ON THESE VEHICLES. I DON'T WANT SOMEONE ELSE TO INCUR THE SAME ISSUES I HAVE. MY 2012 CAMRY HYBRID STEERS HARD TO THE LEFT WHEN BRAKING WHEN THE ROAD IS CROWNED ALONG THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN FOR REPAIR THREE TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED IT IN DECEMBER. FIRST TWO TIMES THE DEALER SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND THAT TOYOTA HADN'T REGISTERED SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER OWNERS. THE MOST RECENT VISIT TO THE DEALER HAD A DIFFERENT RESULT. ON MAY 18TH THE DEALER ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM AND THAT TOYOTA WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER OPENED AN INVESTIGATION WITH TOYOTA AND TOYOTA ADMITTED THAT OTHER OWNERS ARE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR 2012 TCH. TOYOTA AND THE DEALER HAVE NO SOLUTIONS. THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE AND NO SOLUTIONS EXIST. *TT
