I am reporting a safety-related issue involving the ECM / torque converter on my 2012 Toyota Camry. This issue can cause loss of power, hesitation, or stalling which presents a serious safety concern while driving. The issue impacts drivability and can result in sudden loss of acceleration or engine stalling, especially at higher speeds or during merging. This creates an increased risk of collision for myself, passengers, and surrounding vehicles. I have experienced some scary occurrences with shuddering at high speeds, hesitation while near other innocent vehicles and stalling. I was never notified by Toyota about this recall or service campaign while it was active. I maintain current registration information and would have had the issue addressed immediately. Toyota acknowledged the campaign but refused support due to expiration, despite my lack of notice. I contacted Toyota and was instructed to file a complaint with NHTSA. Toyota declined to repair the issue under goodwill or policy exception. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether this defect should have been classified as a safety recall and whether consumers were properly notified. Sudden loss of power or stalling presents a significant safety risk and may warrant additional remedies or extension of the campaign for affected owners who were not notified.
I am filing this complaint regarding a known and documented issue affecting my 2012 Toyota Camry (VIN: [XXX] ), which has developed a transmission shudder and vibration between 20–50 mph. This problem is directly aligned with Toyota Technical Service Bulletin T-SB-0079-15 and Customer Support Program ZF4, both of which describe issues with the torque converter and ECM software. My vehicle has 116,670 miles, which falls within the mileage eligibility of the support program (ZF4: 150,000 miles), though it is just outside the time limitation (8 years). I reached out to Toyota (Case #: [XXX]) to request goodwill assistance due to the safety-related nature of the defect and the fact that it is a well-documented product flaw, but they declined support solely based on time — not on mileage or vehicle condition. The vibration affects the transmission and drivability, particularly during city and highway acceleration, creating potential hazards when merging or navigating traffic. I believe this qualifies as a design flaw with potential safety implications. I respectfully request that NHTSA review Toyota’s handling of this issue and determine whether further consumer protection or a recall is warranted, especially for owners who were not adequately notified or who fall just outside the support window despite clear symptoms. There was a recall on this Camry model 2012 to 2014 that the Charlotte, NC dealership refused to cover. I am having a transmission issue that causes my car to shudder and vibrate at regular speeds. “shudder comes from the transmission, especially during the acceleration of the Camry models. It can be alarming for the driver and be a safety concern when the gears do not properly change during operation. When this problem persists over a significant period of time, it has the poetry to cause long-term damage to your transmission. I'VE HAD OTHER PEOPLE DRIVE MY CAR & THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED TO THEM WHILE DRIVING. PRIOR TO ENTERING TOWN, THE CRUISE HAD BEEN SET, BUT WAS TURNED OFF BEFORE ISSUE OCCURRED. I'VE BEEN A LOYAL TOYOTA OWNER FOR NEARLY 2 DECADES. WE'VE OWNED 6 DIFF TOYOTAS (TUNDRA, TACOMA, PRIUS, 2 CAMRYS, AND A LEXUS LS 400) AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING BUT GREAT QUALITY. ON 9/24/14, WHILE TRAVELING HOME FROM A NEIGHBORHOOD PARK, I WAS HIT BY A TRUCK ON THE DRIVER SIDE. I WAS GOING DOWN A SLIGHT HILL AND WAS GOING TO TURN RIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION. I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED PRIOR TO IMPACT BUT MY TURN SIGNAL WAS ON, I WAS GOING TO TURN RIGHT AND I WAS BREAKING. SUDDENLY, I HEARD THIS LOUD CRASH, WHEN I LOOKED TO MY LEFT, I SAW MY DRIVER'S SIDE MIRROR BEING PUSHED INTO MY DOOR, THEN I SAW THE TRUCK. MY CAR DID NOT STOP. I WAS GOING APPRX 15 TO 25 MILES PER HOUR MAYBE, AND AGAIN I WAS TRAVELING SLIGHTLY DOWNHILL AND WOULD HAVE BEEN MAKING A TURN. I THINK MY CAR WAS CONTINUING TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE SECONDS BEFORE IMPACT. ONCE I WAS HIT, MY CAR CONTINUED TO MOVE, SEEMINGLY FASTER. AMAZINGLY, I WAS ABLE TO NAVIGATE THE CORNER (WITHOUT BEING HIT BY ANYONE COMING FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION) AND TURN THE CAR INTO A PARKING LOT (WITH NO CONTROL OF THE BREAKS). IN FRONT OF ME IN THE PARKING LOT, WHICH IS NOT A BIG LOT, MY CAR CONTINUED HEADING IN THE DIRECTION OF A BUILDING THERE. I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR AND WAS FORCED TO PUT IT INTO PARK, HOPING THAT WOULD STOP THE CAR. IT DID. HOWEVER, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE POLICE WERE CALLED, A TICKET WAS ISSUED TO ME STATING THAT I DROVE WITHOUT DUE CARE AND CAUTION. MY INSURANCE AND TOYOTA HOTLINE HAVE BEEN CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED WHO INFORMED THE DEALER THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,700. MAH THE CONSUMER FOUND AT LOW SPEED IT BECAME NECESSARY TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY, DUE TO THE FACT, WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED DOWN RAPIDLY THERE WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE AS IF THE ENGINE CUT OFF. IF THE CONSUMER RELEASED THE PEDAL AND DEPRESSED IT AGAIN AT A PROGRESSIVELY SLOWER RATE, THE ENGINE WOULD RESPOND ACCORDINGLY. THE DEALER STATED IT WAS NORMAL. THE DEALER EXPLAINED THE HESITATION WAS DUE TO THE VEHICLE TRYING TO DOWN SHIFT. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE FUEL INJECTION SENSOR LACKED THE CAPACITY TO ADEQUATELY RECEIVE OR TRANSMIT A SIGNAL TO THE FUEL INJECTORS UNDER RAPID ACCELERATION. THERE WAS NO ENGINE RESPONSE, UNTIL THE CONSUMER LITERALLY RELEASED AND DEPRESSED THE GAS PEDAL AGAIN. UPDATED 03/12/13 THE CONSUMER STATED THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WAS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE TRACTION SYSTEM CONTROLLED BRAKING FORCE AND ENGINE OUTPUT TO THE DRIVE WHEEL WHEN THE SENSOR DETECTED A WHEEL SPIN DURING ACCELERATION OR CORNERING. UPDATED 03/19/13 THE CONSUMER STATED ANOTHER DEALER CONFIRMED HIS PROBLEM AND THE CAUSE. THE DEALER STATED THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WAS CUTTING POWER TO THE ENGINE. EVEN WITH TURNING AND ACCELERATION, THE TRACTION SYSTEM WOULD CUT POWER TO THE ENGINE. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. UPDATED 04/03/13

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE STOPPED WITH A FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE RPMS INCREASED AND THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND BODY REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED AN ENGINEER WOULD COME OUT AND INSPECT THE VEHICLE. I HAVE A TOYOTA CAMRY SE 2012 (4-CYL) WHICH I BOUGHT ON 08/29/2012. ON 12/31/2012 (THE ROAD WAS CLEAR AND DRY, IT WAS A CLOUDY DAY, NO RAIN, SNOW, ICE ON THE ROAD) WHILE STARTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP LIGHT, TURNING INTO A LANE, AFTER I STOPPED PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR KEPT GETTING FASTER AND FASTER (THE GAS PEDAL DIDN'T GET STUCK AND MY FOOT WASN'T ON IT), WHEN I STARTED TO TURN INTO A LANE, THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL LOCKED UP AND TO AVOID A CRASH I HAD TO TURN THE WHEEL TO THE OTHER SIDE, I ENDED UP DOING A DIAGONAL SKID INTO THE OTHER LANE, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO STOP AND STRAIGHTEN IT OUT AND KEEP GOING. SINCE THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL LOCKED UP THE CAR JERKED ME PRETTY HARD AND MY NECK AND ARM STARTED TO HURT SINCE THEN AND I AM SCHEDULED TO TAKE PHYSICAL THERAPY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM FOR SERVICE (FROM 1/2/2013 - 1/10/2013) AND AFTER I PICKED IT UP I'VE BEEN HAVING THE RPM STICKING AT 1.3 ALL THE TIME SO NOW IT'S WORSE THAN WHEN I HAD IT LAST. THE CAR DOESN'T FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE AND I DON'T WANT TO PUT MY LIFE OR OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES AT RISK. AFTER CALLING TOYOTA AND EXPLAINING ALL OF THIS THEY TOLD ME TO GO TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER SAYS THAT TOYOTA IS THE ONE THAT CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT, THE DEALER'S ONLY RESOLUTION IS TO ACCEPT THE CAR AS A TRADE IN AND ROLL OVER THE RESIDUAL VALUE INTO A LOAN FOR ANOTHER CAR, BUT IT ISN'T MY FAULT SO I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY MORE IN PAYMENTS FOR A CAR AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE PAYING FOR A CAR THAT'S NOT SAFE FOR ME OR MY FAMILY TO DRIVE.
