There is an airbag recall with no remedy available. I’m very concerned about driving my car without this being fixed. Toyota shows the parts should have been available by now. How can they allow this to go unfixed when they are putting lives at risk? I called my dealer and they said it wasn’t fixable yet.

I own a 2021 Toyota Camry XSE (VIN: [XXX] ) with a malfunction in the SRS airbag system related to the front passenger seat frame Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor. The airbag warning light remains on, and diagnostics indicate a failure in the OCS sensor that could prevent the passenger airbag from deploying correctly, or could deploy it at the wrong time during a collision. I contacted Toyota for assistance, but they declined to cover the repair, stating the vehicle is out of warranty and not covered under any current recall or extended warranty. However, this is a critical safety issue that affects the airbag system’s ability to protect occupants properly. I’ve discovered that Toyota has already issued multiple airbag- and sensor-related recalls in recent years, including: – The Takata inflator recall, affecting many Toyota models for potentially explosive airbag inflators. – A December 2023 recall for approximately 1 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles (model years 2020-2022) due to a front passenger seat OCS sensor defect—the same component involved in my Camry’s issue. – A June 2024 recall of about 145,000 U.S. vehicles (certain 2024 SUVs/hybrids) for side-curtain airbags that may not deploy correctly. – A January 2025 recall affecting 2023 Toyota and Lexus vehicles for steering-column spiral cable defects that could prevent the driver’s airbag from deploying. Given these ongoing airbag and OCS sensor problems across multiple Toyota models and years, it appears my 2021 Camry may suffer from a related or similar defect. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether this issue should be included in or trigger an expansion of existing Toyota airbag recalls. Toyota’s refusal to assist despite the safety risk raises concern that other 2021 Camry owners could be affected without being aware of the danger INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Oct 2, 2025 Crash

I was involved in a multi-impact collision while driving my 2021 Toyota Camry. Certified crash data from the Airbag Control Module (ACM) confirms five crash events including a frontal collision (delta-V of -9.3 mph) and a rollover (roll angle 9.8°, roll rate 45.6°/sec). Despite these conditions, no airbags deployed—not the frontal, knee, or curtain airbags. The driver was belted, there was no airbag warning light, and power was maintained. Toyota later stated the system worked “as designed” and found no defects. However, federal safety standards (FMVSS No. 208 and 226) suggest this type of crash should have triggered the airbags, especially due to the frontal delta-V and verified rollover. I request a formal investigation. Crash report available upon request.

THIS FIRST PORTION OF THE DESCRIPTION IF AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION FROM THE LATTER PART, WHICH WAS RECEIVED IN SPANISH. Complaint to NHTSA – Unresolved Recall on 2021 Toyota Camry I own a used 2021 Toyota Camry purchased from an authorized Toyota dealer. After purchase, I discovered that the vehicle has an open recall related to the airbag system. According to information from NHTSA, there is currently no solution available from the manufacturer. My concern is twofold: 1. The vehicle makes a constant daily noise, apparently related to the problem reported in the recall, which increases my distrust in the car's safety. 2. The dealership did not inform me before purchase about the existence of this active, unrepaired recall, which I consider a serious lack of transparency and a safety risk to consumers. This puts me in a situation of road safety concerns, as I am driving a vehicle that does not meet minimum safety standards due to a defect recognized by the manufacturer, but with no available remedy. I request that NHTSA: Investigate the case and confirm whether Toyota and the dealership are complying with their notification and transparency obligations. Demand that the manufacturer provide a clear and timely solution to this recall, as consumers should not be driving a defective vehicle without alternatives. Strengthen consumer protection mechanisms so that no dealership can sell vehicles with open recalls and no repairs available without explicitly informing the buyer. I trust that NHTSA can intervene, as this is a public safety risk that affects not only me as the owner, but also my passengers and other drivers on the road. para NHTSA – Recall sin solución en Toyota Camry 2021 Soy propietario de un Toyota Camry 2021 (usado) adquirido en un concesionario oficial de Toyota. Took my car in to the dealership when the SRS light came on. Dealership initially said it was due to damage to the electrical harness We paid over 8000 for repairs and got our car back. We had to take the vehicle back 2 more times as the light kept coming back on. The final fix the dealership did to finally make the SRS light stop coming back is the same thing for the fix for the recall for the SRS in Toyotas even though my vin is not on the list

Dear NHTSA Safety Team, I am submitting this complaint to bring attention to an unresolved safety recall issue on my 2021 Toyota Camry SE – SEDAN 4DR (VIN: [XXX] ), which I purchased used in July 2023. The dealership that sold me the vehicle failed to inform me of the open recall, and I later learned that it involves the airbag system—a critical safety component. After checking my VIN, I confirmed that the recall is officially registered as: - NHTSA Recall Number: 23V865 - Manufacturer Recall Number: 23TB15 - Date Issued: December 20, 2023 - Recall Status: Recall Incomplete – Remedy Not Yet Available According to the recall summary, the issue involves potentially defective Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors in the front passenger seat, which may have been improperly manufactured. This defect can result in the airbag failing to deploy as designed in certain crashes, thereby increasing the risk of injury to passengers. Toyota has not yet made a remedy available and only estimates a solution might arrive by Quarter 3 of 2024, which remains uncertain due to parts availability. In the meantime, I have been unable to refinance my vehicle due to this unresolved recall, and this situation has directly impacted my financial health. This is not only a severe safety risk but also a major consumer protection concern. I urge NHTSA to take swift action to ensure that Toyota expedites the availability of the remedy and prevents further financial and safety consequences for affected consumers. Thank you for your attention to this matter. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I was hit from the rear while my vehicle was at a stop. The vehicle was going estimated 50mph and moved my vehicle about 12 feet colliding with the vehicle in from of me. I would think the impact of the front collision should have been enough to have the airbags deploy. The camry was totaled.

Nov 29, 2024

My vehicle has had an open recall since December 20th, 2023 on the passenger airbag not deploying due to being manufactured improperly. I have reached out to Toyota and they still do not have a remedy for the issue and have no time frame on a fix. This is a major safety issue and negligent on their end. They have numerous vehicles that were affected by this recall. The increase in injury due to this issue is substantially higher.

The SRS Airbag System Malfunction appears on the instrument cluster and will not go away. it hinders me from seeing my speed and other features on my car; it is annoying as well. The seatbelt dinger goes off constantly and will not stop, It has been long enough for Toyota to come up with a remedy to correct the issue. The issue right now is NHTSA not doing their job and making Toyota do their job and fix the issue of the air bags. The NHSTA is a worthless company that does nothing for the consumer, a waste of money just like the rest of the government. Do nothing for the people is the governments motto.

There is a recall on my vehicle about the SRS light where it is not picking up the weight of the passenger which in turn is not allowing the passenger airbag to go off.

Feb 12, 2024

I received a notice of a recall a couple months ago with a note that there was no remedy as of yet. I have been waiting to schedule the repair and driving the car less. I received another notice also stating there is no remedy but to contact them if any questions. I contacted the manufacturer and they told me to contact the dealership. The dealer ship, when I stated there was a recall on the passenger airbag and I didnt want to drive an unsafe car around, playing russian roulette on the safety equipment if we did get in an accident. The service advisor responded with asking if I drive around in the passenger seat. He then also told me to contact the manufacturer cause they cant do anything. This just happens to be with my Toyota Camry but unfortunately our other car ALSO has an airbag recall for the Driver side ALSO with NO REMEDY! (its a 2016 Buick Enclave) They wont make an appointment to do anything. Nobody seems to want to help me cause I am just the consumer, which means nothing to companies now. I just want my car safe. How can I get assistance getting this fixed?

They are knowingly rented dangerous vehicles. I have yet to be contacted to return the vehicle to their possession due to the open recall.

To the best of my knowledge the following information is true. The car accident was on June 1, 2022. My vehicle is at the Collision repair shop. Will provide their phone # upon request. It would be great if the black box was checked regarding brake assist and other safety features. You have my permission to examine car, take and or check black box. You can take pictures or video as needed. I always keep the brake assist on. I do not depend on brake assist. The posted speed limit is 45 mph. I usually set my cruise control for the posted speed limit. I looked down briefly and next thing I knew my car hit the personal vehicle in front of me. The vehicle my car hit in the rear was a 2011 Ford Expedition. There was damage to his bumper and it appeared to be a wrinkle in back door. There is a trailer hitch on the Ford Expedition. The driver was only person I talked with. He did not appear to be injured. He did not report any injuries. He drove off as soon as the highway patrolman gave us our exchange information. The airbag cover cut inside my left lower arm above my wrist. Wound was larger than a 50 cent piece. The wound swelled up instantly and was bleeding. I do not think the airbag hit my head. I do know steering wheel airbag is to prevent head injuries. The knee airbag caused an abrasion below my knee. EMS had to bandage my wrist with a thick bandage to stop and control the bleeding. I ask them to bandage below my knee to cover broken skin incase it bleed. The insurance adjuster examined car and took pictures June 16, 2022. I called collision center as instructed. Car was towed to collision center same day for assessment of damage. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure of the brake assist not working before the accident. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Jan 29, 2022 Crash

I crashed into the metal guardrail on the side of the highway after swerving to avoid a car that lost a tire in front of me. The car was totalled with siginificant damage to the front, engine compartment, and windshield. But the airbags did not inflate. I was the only person in the car, but even the driver's airbags did not inflate. The police who came to the crash were very confused that a brand new car's airbags did not inflate in the crash.
