I ONLY HAVE 44,000 MILES ON MY 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA AND THE AIR COMPRESSOR WENT OUT. I HAVE READ THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED IN NUMEROUS COROLLAS FROM THE SAME YEAR. I BELIEVE THIS NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO AND RECALLED OR I WILL SELL MY CAR AND NEVER BUY A TOYOTA AGAIN. I WILL ALSO POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT TOYOTA'S NEGLIGENCE AND MISTREATMENT OF CUSTOMERS. TOYOTA ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE (#AC002-06) BULLETIN REGARDING THE CONDENSER NOT BEING PROPERLY PROTECTED FOR THE 05 AND 06 COROLLA MODELS. THEY SAID THAT YOU COULD TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY WOULD INSTALL NETTING AROUND THE CONDENSER- BUT IF IT IS ALREADY BROKEN- THEN YOU ARE OUT OF LUCK. MINE HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR TWO YEARS-NOW I AM NOW SPENDING OVER $500 TO REPLACE THE CONDENSER AND MY CO-WORKER DRIVES AN 06 MODEL AND HERS HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR A YEAR. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR PEOPLE DRIVING IN EXTREME HEAT. WE ARE TAKING A FAMILY TRIP TO NV THIS WEEKEND, SO I HAD TO BITE THE BULLET AND GET MINE FIXED, BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS. IF YOU LOOK AT THE A/C CONDENSER ON THESE CARS VS. 2007-2009 TOYOTA HAS ADDED A PLASTIC COVER TO COVER THE HOLE LEFT IN 2005-2006. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR THE WARM STATES IN THE SOUTH. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THERE WAS A COMMUNICATION ERROR BETWEEN THE ECM AND SCAN TOOL. THE DEALER SUSPECTED THE REPLACEMENT ECM WAS DEFECTIVE, SO THEY ORDERED ANOTHER ECM. THE NEXT DAY, THE REPLACEMENT ECM WAS STILL GIVING A COMMUNICATION ERROR AND IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE RECALL, THEY TECHNICIAN WOULD HAVE TO CUT IN AND FIGURE OUT WHICH WIRE WAS NOT CONNECTED. THE CONSUMER WAS THEN INFORMED THERE WOULD BE A CHARGE OF $200. THE CONSUMER STATED IT WAS UNETHICAL FOR TOYOTA TO OFFER TO FIX A PROBLEM WITHOUT STATING UP FRONT OF A POTENTIAL COST. *JB

THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT. THE FAILURE CONTINUED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS THE RESULT OF A FAILED ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE FINAL FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO STATED THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST DID NOT REVEALING ANY FAILURE CODES THEREFORE, THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 83,000.

IT WAS WINDY ON JANUARY 24, 2011 I WAS ON A HIGHWAY HEADED TO GREAT FALLS,MONTANA WHEN RIGHT OUTSIDE OF HAVRE, MONTANA A SEMI-TRUCK DRIVER HAULING A LOAD DROVE BY ME AND A ROCK HIT MY CAR. I PULLED OVER IN HAVRE, NO ROCK CHIPS ON MY WINDSHIELD OF THE BODY. I OPENED THE HOOD AND ON MY A/C CONDENSER WAS A DENT. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE OKAY. BUT, SINCE THEN MY CAR LEAKS FLUID IN THE FRONT WHERE THE CONDENSER IS. THERE IS NOTHING PROTECTING THE CONDENSER FROM ANY ROCKS, ETC. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE CAR. MY BROTHER IS A MECHANIC AND SAID IT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT BY TOYOTA. I READ ABOUT THE TSB AC002-06. AND AM DEMANDING TOYOTA FIX THE CONDENSER AND FIX THE GAP SO MY CAR WILL BE PROTECTED FROM THIS HAPPENING AGAIN. ON 11/9/2010 AT 5:30 P.M., MY 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA CE STALLED ON I-87 (NY STATE THRUWAY--MAJOR DEEGAN) IN THE BRONX AS IT WAS BEING DRIVEN AT 55 MILES PER HOUR. THE CAR WAS OPERATING NORMALLY WHEN I LEFT WORK IN THE BRONX 20 MIN BEFORE. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER. THE OIL AND BATTERY LIGHTS ALSO CAME ON. ABOUT ONE AND 1/2 MILES LATER IT STARTED MAKING ANOTHER NOISE SIMILAR TO THE FIRST, BUT IT WAS CONTINUOUS AND SO I PARKED THE CAR AT HOME AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY THEN EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THIS WAS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MOTOR(BEING THE TYPE THAT IT WAS) AND WHAT HAD HAPPENED IS A ROD IN THE ENGINE HAD BEEN SPUN. THEY SAID IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE AND I COULD HAVE LOST CONTROL AND WRECKED THE CAR VERY EASILY. THEY SAID THAT DUE TO THE NATURE AND PRICE THEY WOULD NOT FIX THE CAR BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE TO HAVE A FULL NEW ENGINE REPLACEMENT AND THAT WOULD BE UP TO $8K BECAUSE OF IT BEING A RARE AND HIGH PERFORMANCE PRICE. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION AND ONLINE RESEARCH IT IS VERY COMMON WHILE DOWNSHIFTING THIS ENGINE THAT THEY SLIP A GEAR AND SPIN THE ROD MOSTLY IN THE #4 ROD AND NEED A NEW ENGINE FOR COMPLETE REPAIRS. ALSO IT WOULD VERY LIKELY CONTINUE TO HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN THUS PUTTING ME AND MY FAMILY IN DANGER ON THE ROAD. IF THE PHONE CALL IS PULLED BY THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY TRAFFIC ADMINISTRATION A WIDER PROBLEM WITH DEFECTIVE ENGINE CONTROL MODULES MAY BECOME EVIDENT. A FOLLOW-UP INSPECTION WAS SCHEDULED FOR 03/02/2010. THE CONTACT HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. BECAUSE OF THIS STRANGE AND INSTANTANEOUS JUMP IN HORSEPOWER, DURING SLIPPERY CONDITIONS, OR ON ROADS WITH DEBRIS SUCH AS SAND OR GRAVEL, THE CAR WOULD, WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING, LOSE TRACTION WHEN IT HIT THIS POWER SURGE 'POINT'. I AM WELL AWARE THE XRS IS A PERFORMANCE TYPE VEHICLE, AND ENJOY IT WHEN ROAD CONDITIONS ARE PERFECT, YET IT CAUSES ME GREAT DISCOMFORT TO KNOW THAT MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY DURING RAIN OR SNOW (OR WITH SAND OR GRAVEL ON THE ROAD SURFACE) MAY MEAN AN ABRUPT LOSS IN TRACTION LEADING TO A CRASH, INJURY, OR WORSE. I HAVE PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED SOME VERY UNNERVING NEAR-ACCIDENTS DUE TO THE ENGINE'S BIZARRE POWER DELIVERY. STRANGELY ENOUGH, MY RESEARCH INDICATES THAT PREVIOUS ITERATIONS OF THE SAME ENGINE PRODUCED BY TOYOTA HAVE THE 'CAM SWITCHOVER POINT' PLACED MUCH LOWER IN THE RPM RANGE, LEADING TO A MUCH SMOOTHER POWER DELIVERY (WHICH I BELIEVE IS SAFER AND MORE PREDICTABLE). I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA A TOTAL OF THREE TIMES, ONCE THROUGH MAIL AND TWICE BY PHONE, ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. THE REPRESENTATIVES I TALKED WITH COULD/WOULD NOT ANSWER MY QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, AS WELL AS REFUSING TO ADMIT TO A PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR SPECIAL EDITION CAR. THIS COMPLAINT IS BASED ON TWO INSTANCES OF MY COROLLAS CONDENSER BREAKING DOWN BECAUSE OF ROCKS HITTING IT WHILE DRIVING. WHAT IS THE LIKELIHOOD THAT A REPLACED NEW CONDENSER GOES BAD. WE WENT TO AUTO ZONE TO GET A RECHARGE KIT AND SEALER. AFTER APPLYING THEM THERE STILL WAS NO COLD AIR AND THEIR IS A VISIBLE LEAK ON THE FRONT REGION WHERE THE FIRST CONDENSER ALSO SUFFERED DAMAGE. SEARCHING FOR REPLACEMENTS ON THE INTERNET I CAME ACROSS SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND NO SOLUTION FROM TOYOTA OTHER THAN TO PAY TO REPLACE THE CONDENSER. TOYOTA EVEN ADMITS THIS IN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN AC002-06 "LOWER GRILLE MESH PROTECTION COVER." IN THE INTRO IT READS SOME CUSTOMERS MAY EXPERIENCE DAMAGE TO THE A/C CONDENSER IF THE VEHICLE IS USED REGULARLY. I DO NOT BELIEVE I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THEY SHOULD HAVE FIXED SO I DON'T HAVE TO REPLACE MY CONDENSER EVERY YEAR OR MAYBE MORE FREQUENTLY. DEALER MENTIONED A NUMBER OF OTHER PERSONS BROUGHT THEIR CAR IN LATELY FOR SAME THING BUT SUGGESTED IT WAS RELATED TO OUR CURRENT COLD WEATHER. WHEN I MENTIONED THE PROBLEM WITH MY CAR HAS PERSISTED SINCE LATE AUGUST, A WEEK AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR, THE DEALER SUGGESTED THE SMELL WAS FROM BAD GAS & THE WIND PROBABLY BLEW IT INTO THE CAR. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THIS SMELL HAS BEEN A VERY SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM WITH COROLLA'S (& SOME OTHER CARS) AND A NUMBER OF 2005 OWNERS ON VARIOUS DISCUSSION BOARDS HAVE ALSO REPORTED IT.
