The contact's mother owns a 2006 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while reversing out of a parking space and as she shifted the vehicle into drive, the vehicle surged forward. The contact's mother lost control of the vehicle and crashed into several vehicles and then a curb and turned the vehicle ignition off. The contact's mother stated she had no brakes. The contact sustained bruises to her left and right legs by the knees and both wrists were bruised. Additionally, the contact had pain in her left and right shoulders. The contact did not seek medical attention. The other vehicles were not occupied. The contact stated she did not notice any warning lights were illuminated. The police were on the scene and filed a report. The contact's mother had the vehicle towed to her residence and then later towed to a dealer. The dealer did not inspect the vehicle, however, the manufacturer had an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle brakes. The mechanic determined that there were no mechanical problems with the brakes. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.

MY CAR MADE A SOUND LIKE ROCKS IN A BLENDER AND STOPPED MOVING FORWARD. I SHIFTED IN TO NEUTRAL AND COASTED TO A STOP. THE SOUND WAS FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.I TRIED TO SHIFT BACK INTO GEAR (DRIVE) BUT WAS UNABLE TO GET IT TO GO INTO DRIVE AND THE SOUND THE TRANS WAS MAKING WAS TO SAY THE LEAST HORRIBLE . AT THE TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS HEADING FOR THE ON RAMP TO INTERSTATE 90. I HAD FOUR CHILDREN IN THIS CAR AND CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ONE MINUTE LATER!!! I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND DID NOT RESTART IT.I HAD TOWED TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE INFORMED ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED!! $3600.00 FOR A TRANSMISSION AND MY CAR HAS ONLY BEEN DRIVEN 53000 MILES! THIS HAPPENED ON I-95 NORTH IN MARYLAND BETWEEN MD-32 AND MD-175. AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION OF MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA CAME APART. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY STARTED MAKING NOISE AND BEGAN TO SHAKE. I LOST CONTROL FOR A FEW SECONDS FROM THE SHAKING AND THE FEELING AS IF SOMEONE WAS PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. ONCE I GATHERED THAT SOMETHING HAD FAILED (VS. A COLLISION WITH A SMALL OBJECT), I WAS ABLE TO SUPPLY EXTRA GAS AND GRIP THE WHEEL HARD TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT. WHILE MAKING MY WAY OFF THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR SQUEALED AND GRINDED. SURPRISINGLY INSTEAD OF PROBLEMS STARTING,HARSH SHIFTING OR STOPPING WHILE DRIVING (ALL LISTED AS POSSIBLE "SYMPTOMS" OF ECM ISSUES)- THE OPPOSITE PROBLEM OCCURRED. MY CAR TRIED TO ACCELERATE WHEN STOPPED! WHEN FULLY STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS/STOP SIGNS, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL,ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY CAR ENGINE REVVED AND THE CAR TRIED TO ACCELERATE.I QUICKLY PUSHED DOWN EVEN HARDER ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STAY STOPPED AND NOT CRASH INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME OR GO THE INTERSECTION. OTHER INSTANCES OCCURRED WHEN PARKING AFTER A SHORT DRIVE DOING ERRANDS. AGAIN,THE ENGINE REVVED UP AND ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE WHILE STOPPED,PREPARING TO PUT THE CAR INTO PARK... I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AT TOYOTA CORPORATE TO SEEK THEIR ADVICE AND FULLY DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AS I HAVE HERE.THEY SAID TOYOTA MECHANICS WOULD HAVE TO GET THE CAR TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM IN ORDER TO FIX IT. I ASSURED THEM IT WAS REALLY HAPPENING, BUT IT WAS NOT PREDICTABLE. DEAR TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE, I REQUEST PROMPT REIMBURSEMENT OF EXPENSES IN THE AMOUNT OF $656.47 INCURRED DUE TO THE MALFUNCTIONING OF THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE IN MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA LAST MONTH. WHILE A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ULTIMATELY REPLACED THE ECM AT NO COST, I INCURRED RENTAL CAR EXPENSES FOR THE TIME I WAS WITHOUT MY COROLLA, AND PAID PARTS AND LABOR IN THE AMOUNT OF $521.76 TO MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO INITIALLY REPLACE A TRANSMISSION SOLENOID WHICH HAD GONE BAD DUE TO THE FAILING ECM. I WILL NOT EVEN DESCRIBE THE AMOUNT OF MY TIME THAT TOYOTA WASTED BY FAILING TO NOTIFY ME, AS THE OWNER OF A CAR MODEL KNOWN BY TOYOTA TO FREQUENTLY HAVE PREMATURE ECM FAILURE, OF THIS ISSUE SO THAT I COULD RESOLVE IT AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY. IN EARLY JULY I EXPERIENCED DIFFICULT AND JERKING SHIFTING OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN MY TOYOTA. I BROUGHT IT TO MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A BAD TRANSMISSION SOLENOID (CODE P2716), AND SUBSEQUENTLY DETERMINED THAT THE SOLENOID HAD GONE BAD DUE TO THE ECM FAILING. AT THAT POINT, CONCERNED ABOUT THE STATE OF MY TRANSMISSION, I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ECM IS COVERED UP TO 8 YEARS/80,000 MILES, AND THAT IF THE SOLENOID HAD GONE BAD AS A RESULT OF THE FAILING ECM, THE SOLENOID REPLACEMENT, TOO, WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE ECM AT NO CHARGE. I BELIEVE THAT THE OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES I INCURRED, AS WELL AS THE CONSIDERABLE INCONVENIENCE I ENDURED, WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF TOYOTA HAD SHARED PROACTIVELY WITH ITS CUSTOMERS THE FACT THAT FAILING ECMS ARE UNUSUALLY COMMON IN COROLLAS. IF TOYOTA HAD REPORTED THIS INFORMATION TO ME, I WOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED THE SYMPTOMS DEMONSTRATED BY MY CAR, AND WOULD HAVE BROUGHT IT TO A DEALERSHIP IN THE FIRST INSTANCE TO BE FIXED. INSTEAD, I SPENT TIME AND MONEY USING A TRUSTED INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, AND LEARNED OF THE LARGER ECM PROBLEM THROUGH HIM AND THROUGH INDEPENDENT RESEARCH. *TR

WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA S (SPORT) AT AROUND 60 MPH, THE ENGINE LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING AND BEGAN RAPIDLY DECREASING TRAVELING SPEED TO 10-15 MILES MPH. THEN, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I ATTEMPTED TO APPLY GAS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED DECLINING IN SPEED. AFTER PULLING OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE CAR STARTED AND BEGAN OPERATION AS IF NOTHING HAD OCCURRED. I HAD THE CAR CHECKED AT AN AUTO PARTS STORE, AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND A PREPONDERANCE OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE EXACT EXPERIENCE TO MINE FROM OWNERS OF (2005-2007). OUTRAGED OWNERS EXPRESSED THAT IT WAS COMMON KNOWLEDGE AMONG DEALERS THAT THERE WAS ENGINE COMPUTER ISSUE, AND A SUBSEQUENT TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED WITHOUT NOTIFYING OWNERS OF THIS MATTER. I RELAYED THIS INFORMATION TO THE TOYOTA OF EASLEY DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE MANAGER GAVE ME A LOT OF PUSHBACK ON THE MATTER, SAID I WAS 4,000 MILES OVER THEIR FREE REPLACEMENT PERIOD (8 YRS/80,000 MILES). I RESPONDED THAT THE MILEAGE WASN'T THE CAUSE IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE. FINALLY, AFTER SPEAKING MY CALL TO THE TOYOTA HELPLINE AND HIS DISTRICT MANAGER, THE PARTS MANAGER AGREED TO CUT THE FEE 50% FROM $724 TO $352. AT THIS POINT, THEY CHARGED ME $85 JUST TO LOOK AT THE CAR SO I HAD NO OTHER RECOURSE BUT TO PAY TO HAVE THEM FIX THIS SINCE THE CAR WAS BEGINNING TO LOSE ENGINE POWER IN THIS MANNER EVERY 10 TO 15 MILES. UPON LEAVING TOYOTA OF EASLEY AND RETURNING TO MY APARTMENT, I CALLED A FEW OTHER DEALERSHIPS THAT I HAD PATRONIZED PREVIOUSLY. THE RESPONSE THAT I RECEIVED FROM ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WAS BRING THE CAR IN IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 COROLLAS, AND EVEN IF WE CAN'T DO THIS FOR YOU FOR FREE, TOYOTA SHOULD BE ABLE TO REFUND YOU FOR THIS MATTER BECAUSE ITS SO COMMONPLACE. *TR

I RECENTLY ENCOUNTERED A POWER LOSS WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA, THE OPPOSITE OF THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM THAT IS IN THE NEWS. AFTER STOPPING TO FILL UP THE CAR WITH GASOLINE, I COULD ONLY GET THE CAR TO GO ABOUT 5 TO 10 MILES AN HOUR WHEN I USED THE ACCELERATION PEDAL. DESPITE USING THE HAZARD LIGHTS, I WAS CONCERNED THAT SOMEONE WAS GOING TO RAM INTO THE CAR AS I LIMPED INTO A GARAGE TO HAVE THE CAR LOOKED AT. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER WHO UNCOVERED (AFTER A COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM CHECK) AN INTERNAL ECU FAILURE...SOME SORT OF COMPUTER CIRCUIT FAILURE. THE ONLY ADVANCED WARNING ABOUT A COMPUTER FAILURE THAT I CAN RECALL RECEIVING OCCURRED EARLIER IN THE MORNING WHEN I NOTICED THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS WEREN'T WORKING RIGHT. ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) IS DEFECTIVE. CAR LOSES POWER AND SOMETIMES DIES WHILE DRIVING, ALSO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS VERY HARD GOING INTO EACH GEAR. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET FINDS THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH MANY TOYOTA MODELS FOR 2006-2007. DEALER HAS OFFERED A WARRANTY FIX FOR CARS STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY ONLY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THE COMPUTER CAUSED THE FAILURE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. A WEEK LATER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS DONE AND REVEALED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR $4000. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT GEAR IN REVERSE THE GEARS FAILED. THE VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT IN REVERSE AND IT LUNGED FORWARD. SHE ALSO NOTICED THAT IT WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO FIRST, SECOND, OR THIRD GEAR. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL GARAGE WHO STATED THAT THE SOLENOID CAUSED THE FAILURE TO OCCUR. THE MANUFACTURER FILED REPORT NUMBER 1002148-131 AND STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE; THEREFORE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. SHE WILL TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 101,044.

I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA CE, IT'S AUTOMATIC WITH THE DRIVE SHIFT IN THE CENTER CONSOLE. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE I NOTICED IF THE SHIFT IS BARELY BUMPED IT KNOCKS THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. I HAVE BEEN VERY CAREFUL NOT TO BUMP IT, BUT YESTERDAY I HIT A BUMP ON THE INTERSTATE IT KNOCKED ME INTO NEUTRAL, I WAS NOT AWARE I WAS OUT OF GEAR, BECAUSE A 18 WHEELER WAS BARRELING DOWN ON MY BUMPER, SO I COULDN'T HEAR THE CHANGE IN THE MOTOR, BUT WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE TO GET OUT OF HIS WAY, THE CAR WOULDN'T GO FASTER, THEN I NOTICED MY TACHOMETER WAS AT 4 1/2 AND KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEMS SO I TOOK THE SHOULDER. I HAVE A 17 YEAR OLD SON THAT WILL BE DRIVING SOON, I DON'T FEEL SAFE WITH HIM DRIVING BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL OF EITHER CAUSING A ACCIDENT, OR BREAKING DOWN, OR RUINING THE CAR ALL TOGETHER. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE VEHICLE WAS PUT INTO THE PARK GEAR, HOWEVER; IT SHIFTED TO REVERSE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE COMPUTER. AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE THE VEHICLE WAS SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT AND THE WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT FOR THE DOOR ILLUMINATED. THE SPEEDOMETER BEGAN TO RACE UP AND DOWN AND THERE WAS A NOISE HEARD COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO THE REAR END OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED. THE DRIVER AND THE INFANT IN THE OTHER VEHICLE SUSTAINED INJURIES. THERE WAS NO POLICE REPORT. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE BUT WILL BE ADDED TO THE HARDCOPY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,677. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 28,660.

THE CONTACT NOTICED THE PROBLEM SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE CLUTCH OPERATION WAS NORMAL FOR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SHIFTER MUST BE MOVED OUT OF GEAR WHILE IN A STOPPED POSITION IN ORDER RELIEVE THE LEG FATIGUE. THE VEHICLE IS NOT BEING DRIVEN CURRENTLY BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULT CLUTCH OPERATION.
