I WAS SLOWLY PULLING UP THE DRIVEWAY TO PARK BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN THE COROLLA SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD. IT ACCELERATED QUICKLY AND I COULDN'T STOP IT. IT CRASHED INTO THE BACK OF THE OTHER VEHICLEWAAQ. BOTH VEHICLES SUSTAINED DAMAGE BUT THE COROLLA'S IS SIGNIFICANT.

ON FIVE SEPARATE OCCASIONS MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION. VEHICLE EACH TIME WAS AT VERY LOW SPEED, APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, GOING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR PARK TO REVERSE, WITH LIGHT PRESSURE APPLIED TO BRAKES. ENGINE BEGAN TO RACE AND ACCELERATE, BRAKING HARDER HAD NO EFFECT, AND VEHICLE STOPPED ONLY WHEN SHIFTED TO PARK. INSTANCES OCCURRED WHILE PARALLEL PARKING OR COMING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY ONTO A BUSY STREET. ACCELERATOR WAS NOT STUCK IN DOWN POSITION, BUT ENGINE ROARED AND RACED ON ITS OWN POWER. I HAD NO CONTROL OF VEHICLE DURING THE FOUR OR FIVE SECONDS IT TOOK ME TO SHIFT INTO PARK. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER ON NOVEMBER 17, 2017 AFTER FIRST THREE INCIDENTS, WITH SERVICE DEPARTMENT FINDING NO PROBLEM. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO DEALER AGAIN ON FEBRUARY 14, 2018, AFTER TWO MORE INCIDENTS OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION. SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THEY SUGGESTED USER ERROR, MY CONFUSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL. IT WAS NOT USER ERROR AND NOT FLOOR MATS STUCK UNDER GAS PEDAL. IT HAPPENED FIVE TIMES AND THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.

THIS TIME IT HAPPENS WHEN I WAS GOING VERY SLOW AND THERE WERE CHILDREN PLAYING CLOSE TO MY HOME. I WAS VERY SLOW NO MORE 3 TO 5 MILES AND HOUR. I HAD TO HIT THE BREAKS VERY HARD TO STOP SINCE AS I WAS TURNING INTO THE DRIVEWAY THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN.

MANUFACTURING DEFECT WITH ODOMETERS IN TOYOTA 2006. IT IS THE FEDERAL LAW THAT MANDATE FUNCTIONAL ODOMETER. IT APPEARS THAT DIGITAL GAUGE IN SOME TOYOTA CARS WAS PROGRAMMED TO DISCONNECT ODOMETER AT 299999 MILLAGE. NOT ONLY THE REPLACEMENT OF ODOMETER COST $600.00 BUT THE NEW ODOMETER WILL HAVE TO BE SET AT 0 ZERO MILLAGE WHICH IS INCORRECT AND FRAUDULENT. TOYOTA ODOMETER FOR WHATEVER AND UNKNOWN REASON DON'T GO PASS 300000 MILES. HOW OTHERWISE THE OWNER SHOULD KEEP A TRACK OF MILLAGE. TOYOTA DOESN'T SEEMS TO RECOGNIZE THIS DEFECT AS A REASON FOR RECALL AND/OR REIMBURSEMENT. SO FAR VEHICLE IS IN OPERATION WITH MILLAGE STACKED AT 299999.

I WAS STILL CONCERNED FROM BACKGROUND INFORMATION I HAD READ ABOUT SUA (THAT OFTEN IT CANNOT BE DETECTED OR REPLICATED) AND DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE. I BACKED MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA INTO A FRIEND'S DRIVEWAY, AND THEN PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE TO STRAIGHTEN IT A BIT. THE CAR SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING SHOT ACROSS THE STREET (PERHAPS AT 45-50 MPH), WENT OVER A 6" HIGH CEMENT RETAINING CURBING, AND ACROSS A LAWN INTO ANOTHER DRIVEWAY. ALL THE WHILE I HAD MY FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE (NOT THE GAS PEDAL). I SWERVED THE WHEEL TO AVOID HITTING A TELEPHONE POLE, AND THE HOUSE. I FINALLY GOT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, AND AT LAST THE BRAKES ENGAGED, AND I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR AVOIDING A PICK-UP TRUCK IN THE DRIVEWAY AND A TREE. DURING THIS ENTIRE TIME THE ENGINE WAS LOUDLY REVVING. OTHER THAN 3 SHREDDED TIRES AND 2 RUINED RIMS, THE CAR SEEMS TO BE INTACT. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA AND HOPE FOR A SUCCESSFUL RESOLUTION. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, HOWEVER, SAID THAT SINCE IT IS NOT UNDER RECALL THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. MEANWHILE I WILL BE FEARFUL EVERY TIME I GET BEHIND THE WHEEL, WHICH I HAVE YET TO DO! 3 NEW TIRES AND 2 NEW RIMS IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY - IT COULD HAVE BEEN MY LIFE! WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA S (SPORT) AT AROUND 60 MPH, THE ENGINE LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING AND BEGAN RAPIDLY DECREASING TRAVELING SPEED TO 10-15 MILES MPH. THEN, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I ATTEMPTED TO APPLY GAS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED DECLINING IN SPEED. AFTER PULLING OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE CAR STARTED AND BEGAN OPERATION AS IF NOTHING HAD OCCURRED. I HAD THE CAR CHECKED AT AN AUTO PARTS STORE, AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND A PREPONDERANCE OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE EXACT EXPERIENCE TO MINE FROM OWNERS OF (2005-2007). OUTRAGED OWNERS EXPRESSED THAT IT WAS COMMON KNOWLEDGE AMONG DEALERS THAT THERE WAS ENGINE COMPUTER ISSUE, AND A SUBSEQUENT TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED WITHOUT NOTIFYING OWNERS OF THIS MATTER. I RELAYED THIS INFORMATION TO THE TOYOTA OF EASLEY DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE MANAGER GAVE ME A LOT OF PUSHBACK ON THE MATTER, SAID I WAS 4,000 MILES OVER THEIR FREE REPLACEMENT PERIOD (8 YRS/80,000 MILES). I RESPONDED THAT THE MILEAGE WASN'T THE CAUSE IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE. FINALLY, AFTER SPEAKING MY CALL TO THE TOYOTA HELPLINE AND HIS DISTRICT MANAGER, THE PARTS MANAGER AGREED TO CUT THE FEE 50% FROM $724 TO $352. AT THIS POINT, THEY CHARGED ME $85 JUST TO LOOK AT THE CAR SO I HAD NO OTHER RECOURSE BUT TO PAY TO HAVE THEM FIX THIS SINCE THE CAR WAS BEGINNING TO LOSE ENGINE POWER IN THIS MANNER EVERY 10 TO 15 MILES. UPON LEAVING TOYOTA OF EASLEY AND RETURNING TO MY APARTMENT, I CALLED A FEW OTHER DEALERSHIPS THAT I HAD PATRONIZED PREVIOUSLY. THE RESPONSE THAT I RECEIVED FROM ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WAS BRING THE CAR IN IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 COROLLAS, AND EVEN IF WE CAN'T DO THIS FOR YOU FOR FREE, TOYOTA SHOULD BE ABLE TO REFUND YOU FOR THIS MATTER BECAUSE ITS SO COMMONPLACE. *TR

WE HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO 2 DIFFERENT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND CALLED TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER AND SERVICE SUPERVISORS BUT OUR COMPLAINTS WERE IGNORED ON GROUNDS THAT THE 2006 COROLLA WAS"NOT ON THE RECALL LIST" OR THAT THEY COULD NOT "REPLICATE THE PROBLEM". SINCE THE PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS ON STEEP, DOWNHILL ROADS WHEN MY DAUGHTER STEPS ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR, IT NATURALLY CANNOT BE REPLICATED ON THE FLAT SURFACES OF SACRAMENTO OR ONTARIO, CA. MY MOTHER WAS DRIVING A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA AND WAS PULLING INTO HER PARKING PLACE AT HER APARTMENT (ESTIMATED MOVING ONLY SEVERAL MPH). WHEN SHE TOOK HER FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR TO BRAKE, THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD ACCELERATING VERY FAST, JUMPED THE CURB, AND CRASHED THROUGH THE BUILDING WALL AND INTO A NEIGHBOR'S APARTMENT. FURTHERMORE, BOTH MY SISTER AND MY NIECE BOTH RECENTLY DROVE MY MOTHER'S CAR ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND BOTH EXPERIENCED SUDDEN RAPID ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED. ONCE ARRIVED AT TOYOTA, THE MECHANIC WENT TO TALK TO HIS SUPERVISOR AND A DIFFERENT MECHANIC CAME OUT AND LOOKED AT THE CAR. THE SECOND MECHANIC STATED 'THIS IS NORMAL FOR TOYOTA', DISMISSING THE FIRST MECHANICS OBSERVATIONS. I ASKED FOR THE FIRST MECHANIC, THE SECOND MECHANIC STATED 'THE MECHANIC (FIRST) IS NOT AVAILABLE. IF I WISH, I COULD HAVE THE ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR PARTS REPLACED, BUT I WILL NEED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR/SERVICE AND THE EXPENSE WILL NOT BE COVERED BY TOYOTA. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT I'VE EXPERIENCE WITH AN ENGINE SURGE AND UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 25MPH TOWARDS AN INTERSECTION. THE LIGHT AHEAD WAS RED, SO I TOOK MY FOOT ENTIRELY OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR AND LET THE CAR COAST. IT GRADUALLY SLOWED DOWN AS IT ALWAYS DOES, NOTHING UNUSUAL. AS I CAME UP ON THE RED LIGHT I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND ROLLED TO A SOFT STOP. I WAITED AT A RED LIGHT WITH MY FOOT RESTING ENTIRELY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. ALL OF A SUDDEN--THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS THE SOUND--THE ENGINE ROARED AND THE CAR TRIED TO RACE FORWARD DESPITE MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. I PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKE TO NO AVAIL. THE CAR WAS FIGHTING AGAINST ME WANTING TO RACE FORWARD. THERE WAS A STOPPED CAR AHEAD OF ME AND I WAS TRYING NOT TO CRASH INTO IT. IN DESPERATION I STOOD UP ON THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD AND THE CAR SKID. I HAD TO STEER INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO AVOID REAR ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I PULLED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND THE CAR CAME TO A STOP DIAGONAL ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO TOYOTA FOR A SECOND TIME. DEALER RAN EXTENSIVE TESTS ON ELECTRONIC AND ENGINE SYSTEMS AND SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THEY STATED THAT THE COMPUTER "HISTORY" SHOWED NO RECORD OF THE INCIDENT. THEY OFFERED NO EXPLANATION NOR ANY REMEDY. I AM FRUSTRATED BEYOND BELIEF THAT TOYOTA IS HIDING BEHIND "WE CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG" AND IS NOT TRYING HARDER TO FIND THE CAUSE. THERE ARE NO FLOOR MATS IN MY CAR, AND THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE GAS PEDAL. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE VERY CLEAR THAT MY FOOT WAS ENTIRELY OFF OF THE GAS PEDAL FOR AT LEAST 15 SECONDS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. I WAS TRAVELING WESTBOUND ON I-80 AT APPROXIMATELY 55-60 MILES PER HOUR DURING LIGHT RAIN. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL A FEW TIMES, BUT THE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS NON-RESPONSIVE. I REALIZED I WOULD SOON BE APPROACHING THE CAR AHEAD OF ME, SO I LOOKED IN MY MIRRORS AND OVER BOTH SHOULDERS TO DETERMINE THE LOCATIONS OF OTHER VEHICLES. I WANTED TO CHANGE LANES SO THAT I HAD MORE TIME TO ATTEMPT OTHER CORRECTIVE ACTIONS. WHEN I BEGAN THE LANE CHANGE AND WHILE MY VEHICLE WAS CONTINUING TO ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE SPUN OUT AND I HIT THE CENTER DIVIDE HEAD-ON. THE ACCIDENT STALLED THE MOTOR. 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA "S" / 52760 MILES I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET AND APPROACHING A RED STOP LIGHT, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND WAS NEARLY AT A COMPLETE STOP (COULD NOT HAVE BEEN GOING MORE THAN 2-3MPH). ALL OF A SUDDEN WITHOUT WARNING, THE ENGINE SURGED AND THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD--DESPITE THE FACT THAT I THE BRAKES WERE BEING PRESSED. I IMMEDIATELY PRESSED HARDER ON THE BRAKES AND GOT NO REACTION, SO I JAMMED BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD, THE WHEELS LOCKED AND I SKID APPROXIMATELY 10 FEET! I HAD TO STEER OUT OF THE WAY OF REAR-ENDING THE STOPPED CAR AHEAD OF ME. ALL OF THIS HAPPENED IN ABOUT A THREE SECOND TIME FRAME. IT WAS LITERALLY A MIRACLE THAT I DID NOT RAM INTO THE CAR AHEAD OF ME. ONCE THE CAR CAME TO A STOP, EVERYTHING SEEMED NORMAL AGAIN, AND THE CAR DROVE FINE AS IF NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND SOLE DRIVER OF THIS CAR AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS. IT WAS AS IF SOME OUTSIDE FORCE HAD CONTROL OVER THE CAR AND I COULD NOT STOP IT. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUSLY INJURY OR DEATH. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY TOYOTA SERVICE DEPT. AND THE TECHNICIAN I SPOKE TO TOLD ME HE "NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING" OR THAT "MAYBE PERHAPS THE FLOOR MAT WAS INVOLVED". I CURRENTLY HAVE NO FLOOR MATS IN THIS VEHICLE SO THAT WAS NOT THE CAUSE. SUDDEN ACCELERATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IN 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA - ON 11-24-09 TRAVELING SOUTH ON HIGHWAY 5 IN CALIFORNIA NEAR BUTTONWILOW AT APPROXIMATELY 70-75 MILES PER HOUR IN THE FAST LANE, PROBABLY WHILE ON CRUISE CONTROL, CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE, HIT THE BRAKE WHICH HAD NO EFFECT, AND IF IT HAD BEEN ON CRUISE CONTROL, IT DID NOT OVERRIDE THE ACCELERATION. I BEGAN TO GET CLOSER TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I DO NOT BELIEVE I INITIALLY TRIED TO PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL. I TURNED OFF THE CAR ENGINE, THE ACCELERATION STOPPED, I HIT THE BRAKE SOMEWHAT TO GET IT DOWN TO A REGULAR SPEED, PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, STARTED IT WHILE COASTING, PUT IT BACK INTO GEAR (MANUAL TRANSMISSION), AND THE CRISIS WAS OVER. THEN, ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, WHILE ON THE GRAPEVINE PORTION OF HWY 5 AFTER THE SUMMIT, IT DID THE SAME THING WITH LESSER TRAFFIC. I PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL THIS TIME, HIT THE BRAKE, SLOWED A LITTLE, PUT IT BACK INTO GEAR AND SINCE THEN IT HAS NOT OCCURRED. SEE NEXT PARAGRAPH. OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS, THEIR HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF ADDITIONAL OCCASIONS WITH A DIFFERENT ISSUE WHERE: 1) MY FOOT HAS SLIPPED OFF THE BRAKE ONTO THE ACCELERATOR CAUSING THE ENGINE TO REV WHEN IN NEUTRAL IN THE DRIVEWAY OR A STOPLIGHT (I THINK BECAUSE THE PEDALS ARE SMALL AND VERY CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER), AND; 2) OCCASIONS WHEN THE ACCELERATOR HAS GOT STUCK UNDER THE FLOORMAT WHEN THE FLOORMAT HAD SLID FORWARD CAUSING THE CAR TO ACCELERATE.
