THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED HARD SHIFTING WITH THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED, PRIOR TO THE VEHICLE INADVERTENTLY SHUTTING OFF. ON ANOTHER OCCASION WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHUT-OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED OFF THE FREE WAY. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT YET DETERMINED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER AS A POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR THE FAILURE. 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. A FIRE STARTED FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR AND CAME UP THROUGH THE BACK SEAT. ENTIRE CAR ENGULFED IN FLAMES IN SECONDS EXCEPT FOR FRONT HOOD AREA AND ENGINE. FAULTY FUEL LINE? *TR
I WAS DRIVING UPHILL ON A ONE-WAY STREET IN DOWNTOWN WHEN I SAW AND HEARD THE SPARKS ABOUT 1 MINUTE APART FROM EACH OTHER ON THE FRONT LEFT SIDE BETWEEN THE CRACK OF THE HOOD, THE CAR LOST POWER AND TURNED OFF. I STARTED IT AGAIN, AND IT ONLY MOVED ABOUT TWO FEET AND TURNED OFF. THE CAR STARTED TO ROLL BACK, AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. AN UNKNOWN DRIVER WHO WAS IN FRONT OF US WAS MERGING TO PARK TO THE RIGHT TOLD US TO GET OFF BECAUSE THE CAR WAS ON FIRE, NEXT THE SMOKE WAS VISIBLE. IT BEGAN TO SMELL LIKE BURNED PLASTIC, AND THEN WE SAW THE THICK GREY SMOKE COMING THROUGH THE CRACK OF THE HOOD. I PULLED THE HAND EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR FROM ROLLING BACK DOWN ANY FURTHER. I OPENED THE HOOD WE ALL GOT OUT OF THE CAR. I WENT BACK INSIDE THE CAR TO UNHOOKED THE HARNESS OFF MY DOG. I WAS SO SCARED THAT I COULDN'T RELEASE MY DOG, AND MY SON'S GIRLFRIEND HELPED ME, AND WE GOT MY DOG OUT. MY SON, HIS GIRLFRIEND AND I GOT THE SUPER-SIZE LARGE DRINK WE JUST BOUGHT AT MCDONALD'S AND DUMPED ON THE FIRE WITH THE HELP OF THE UNKNOWN MAN WHO GOT A BUCKET OF SOME LIQUID POSSIBLY WATER FROM THE HOTEL NEXT TO US, AND THE FIRE WAS OUT. I WAS SO TERRIFYING OF HOW RAPID MY CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE AND HOW FAST EVERYTHING HAPPENING. MY CAR WAS WELL MAINTAINED BY TOYOTA REGULARLY, AND THE MECHANIC TOLD US THAT THERE IS NO KNOWN REASON WHY THE FIRE STARTED. TOYOTA HAS REPLACED THE DEFECTED COMPUTER TWICE, THE TRANSMISSION ONCE, I HAD TWO ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS IN THE PAST, AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN A CAR WITH SO MANY MANUFACTURERS DEFECTIVE PARTS. UNEXPLAINABLE FIRE, IS THE RESPONSE I GOT FROM THE INSURANCE AND REPAIR SHOP WHICH DOES NOT MAKE ME FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE A CAR THAT COULD CAUGHT FIRE AT ANY TIME.

THE FAILURE RECURRED APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS AGAIN INFORMED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHILE EXITING A PARKING LOT ONTO A MAIN ROAD, THE CAR STALLED DURING ACCELERATION. THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE CAR, HOWEVER, THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE STARTER CONTINUED TO TURN, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURNOVER. AFTER WAITING APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES THE CAR RESTARTED, BUT THEN STALLED AGAIN AFTER APPROXIMATELY 30 SECONDS OF RUNNING. THE DRIVER NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS ILLUMINATED. THINKING IT MAY BE A FUEL LEVEL PROBLEM, THE DRIVER WENT TO THE GAS STATION AND BOUGHT THREE GALLONS OF GAS AND PUT IT IN THE CAR. BUT THE ENGINE STALLED AGAIN AFTER RUNNING FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE DRIVER LET THE CAR SIT IN THE PARKING LOT OVER NIGHT AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART IT IN THE MORNING, AGAIN, THE CAR STALLED AFTER APPROXIMATELY ONE MINUTE. AFTER READING NUMEROUS ENTRIES PERTAINING TO THE COROLLA'S ECM, THE DRIVER HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. *KB

WE WERE NOTIFIED LAST SUMMER/FALL THAT THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ON SOME 2005-2008 TOYOTA COROLLA AND MATRIX MODELS. THE LETTER STATES THAT WE WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN PARTS BECAME AVAILABLE AND THAT DUE TO THE POSSIBLE FAILURE OF THE ECM -ENGINE CONTROL MODULE -(CRACKS ON WELDS) THE ENGINE MAY STOP WORKING WHILE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN. THEREFORE WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT EXCEPT AT SLOW SPEEDS CONSIDERING SAFETY AND HOPING OUR CAR WAS NOT ONE THAT FELL UNDER THE RECALL. THE DEALER NOW IS SAYING THEY DON'T HAVE THE PART AVAILABLE AND THEY WILL "CALL" US WHEN THEY HAVE IT IN. HOW LONG IS ACCEPTABLE ? DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE TOYOTA FOLLOWS THROUGH? I TRIED REPEATEDLY TO HAVE THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REPLACED IN MY 2007 COROLLA AS I WAS INSTRUCTED TO DO IN THREE SAFETY RECALL NOTICES. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO TOYOTA OF EL CAJON THE FIRST TIME ON JUNE 28TH AFTER RECEIVING A NOTICE THAT STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE READY. THE PART WAS (APPARENTLY) ORDERED BY TOYOTA OF EL CAJON, AND I WAS ASKED TO LEAVE MY CAR OVERNIGHT. THE NEXT DAY I WAS ASKED TO PICK UP THE CAR BECAUSE THE PART HAD NOT COME IN. I WAS TOLD TO WAIT TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT UNTIL THE PART CAME IN. NO ONE CALLED ME TO SCHEDULE THE APPOINTMENT. I WENT ONLINE AROUND JULY 18TH AND SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR JULY 25TH. I BROUGHT MY CAR IN AND WAITED 1 HOUR. THE SERVICE MANAGER THEN CAME AND TOLD ME THAT THE PART WAS NOT THERE, AND THAT HE WOULD NEED TO RE-ORDER IT. HE TOLD ME HE WOULD CALL ME AND THAT IF I DIDN'T HEAR FROM HIM IN A WEEK TO CALL HIM. I CALLED HIM TWO WEEKS LATER AND HE TOLD ME THAT THE PART WAS STILL NOT IN. HE TOLD ME HE WOULD CALL ME TO FOLLOW UP, BUT NEVER DID. I HAVEN'T HEARD BACK FROM TOYOTA OF EL CAJON SINCE THEN. I FILED AN INCIDENT REPORT ([XXX]) ON TOYOTA'S WEBSITE ON AUGUST 16, 2011, BUT I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE. I ALSO TRIED CALLING TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER TODAY, AUGUST 23, BUT THE CALL CENTER IS DOWN AND I COULD NOT GET THROUGH. I DRIVE A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA S AUTOMATIC. I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW & HAD ABOUT 72,000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I HAD NOTICED FOR A FEW WEEKS THAT MY CAR WAS SHIFTING INTO REVERSE QUITE ROUGHLY, DELAYED & JERKING. I FIGURED I WOULD GET IT CHECKED AT MY NEXT OIL CHANGE. WHILE I WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION WAITING TO TURN LEFT, MY CAR STALLED. I STEPPED ON THE PEDAL TO ACCELERATE BUT IT JUST REVVED MY CAR & WOULDN'T GO. I TRIED SWITCHING INTO REVERSE WITH THE SAME RESULT. THEN I RESTARTED MY CAR A COUPLE TIMES UNTIL IT FINALLY STARTED MOVING AGAIN. I THOUGHT IT WAS A FLUKE SO I KEPT DRIVING. UNFORTUNATELY, AS I DROVE ON, THE CAR JUST DECELERATED AND STALLED AGAIN. AT THAT POINT, I CALLED A TOW TRUCK. MY CAR WAS TAKEN TO REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE DIAGNOSTIC WAS ECM ISSUES & TRANSMISSION FAILURE. MY MECHANIC CALLED TOYOTA TO GET THE ECM REPLACED & MY TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REBUILT. *KB

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE MAY NEED ANOTHER THROTTLE CLEANING BUT A DIAGNOSTIC TEST NEEDED TO BE PERFORMED. THE ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS NOT PERFORMED SINCE THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

THE POWER DIED WHEN I WAS ON A VERY BUSY THOROUGHFARE AT RUSH HOUR. I HAD TO CROSS SEVERAL LANES OF TRAFFIC AND WAS BARELY ABLE TO CRAWL TO THE SHOULDER. I WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD THE ENGINE COMPUTER MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE. I UNDERSTAND TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT HAS YET TO GIVE RECALL DETAILS TO THEIR CUSTOMERS OR TO THEIR DEALERSHIPS. WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR? I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR CAUSED ONE. IF TOYOTA WON'T MOVE ON THEIR OWN, PLEASE FORCE THEM TO ACT. LIVES ARE AT RISK!

WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, HE REMOVED HIS FOOT FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND THE CONSUMER HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HIM, AND THEN ANOTHER VEHICLE REAR ENDED HIM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS MADE AND TO SEE WHY THE VEHICLE WAS ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN. A FEW MONTHS LATER, THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE ECU NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ALSO, THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THERE WAS A KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. *JB
IN MARCH 2007, I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW TOYOTA COROLLA. MORE THAN THREE MONTHS AGO MY CAR STARTED HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS WHEN I TRY TO TURN TO CAR ON. FIRST THE CAR ENGINE DID NOT TURN ON RIGHT AWAY, SO I HAD TO KEEP TRYING TO TURN IT ON, THEN THE CAR DID NOT TURN ON AT ALL. I GOT STOCK AT THE SUPERMARKET PARKING LOT ONE DAY BECAUSE THE CAR WAS DEAD. I TOOK IT TO HAVE A BATTERY CHECK AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE BATTERIES OF THE CAR WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, SO THE PROBLEM WAS THE ENGINE OF THE CAR. COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER, I RECEIVED A LETTER BY TOYOTA EXPLAINING ME THAT THEY RECALLED MY CAR WITH A MAJOR PROBLEM IN THE ENGINE, THE LETTER STATED THAT I NEEDED TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE MY CAR ENGINE CAN TURN OFF WHILE I AM DRIVING. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER TO HAVE THEN CHECK THE CAR, AND THEY DID NOT EVEN TOUCH MY CAR, THEY TOLD ME THAT WHEN MY CAR TURN OFF AGAIN, TO CALL THEM OR HAVE MY CAR TOLL TO THEIR PLACE. TWO DAYS AFTER I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE CAR STARTED HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. IT MAKES A WEAR SOUND WHEN I PUT MY KEYS IN THE ENGINE AND TRY TO TURN THE CAR ON. I TAKE ANY TRIES BEFORE THE CAR TURN ON, SO I CALLED TOYOTAS CORPORATE NUMBER AND THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND IT DID IT; HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT EVEN TOUCH MY CAR. THEY LEAVED PARKED ON A SIDE OF THE LOT AND THEY WAITED MORE THAN TWO HOURS TO TELL ME AGAIN THAT I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE CAR DOES NOT TURN ON AGAIN SO THEY CAN TAKE A LOOK OF THE ENGINE. THEY TOLD ME THAT TOYOTA IS WORKING ON A RESOLUTION FOR MY PROBLEM AND BY THE END OF NOVEMBER, I WILL GET A SECOND LETTER FROM TOYOTA STATING THE SOLUTION FOR THE PROBLEM AND TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP SO THEY CAN FIX IN. I ASKED HIM IF THIS HAD TO DO WITH THE RECENT RECALL - HE SAID THAT THIS WASN'T RECENT SINCE THE DATE ON THE BULLETIN WAS 2007. HE SAID PROBABLY THE ECM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND WOULD CALL WHEN HE KNEW FOR SURE. A FEW HOURS LATER HE SAID THAT THE ECM WAS REPLACED AT NO CHARGE. IN THE INTERIM, I HAD DONE SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL BULLETIN ISSUED ON 8/26/10 SO WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR LATER THAT EVENING, I QUESTIONED A DIFFERENT SERVICE REP AND HE SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ANY RECALL! HUH? DIDN'T THE OTHER REP TELL ME THAT THIS WAS FROM 2007? I SAID WHY DID YOU REPLACE THE ECM THEN, HE SAID BECAUSE THERE IS A START UP ISSUE WITH THE ECM. I TOLD HIM WE WEREN'T HAVING START UP TROUBLE, BUT THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR STARTED TO JERK. I TOLD HIM WHAT I HAD LEARNED ABOUT THE ENGINE STALLING WHILE DRIVING AND ASKED HIM IF THESE ISSUES WERE FIXED WITH THIS REPLACEMENT AND HE SAID NO, JUST THE START UP ISSUE!! HE SAID SINCE THERE WASN'T A RECALL ON THE STALLING ISSUE, THEY COULDN'T FIX THIS. I WAS TOTALLY CONFUSED AND DID NOT FEEL SAFE PUTTING MY DAUGHTER BACK IN THAT CAR. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA LE. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF LESS THAN 25 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND DRIVE HOME SAFELY. THE NEXT DAY, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN. WITHIN 20 MINUTES, HE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND DRIVE HOME. WITHIN MINUTES, HE WAS NOTIFIED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO SPEAK WITH TOYOTA OF AMERICA. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 14,200.

I SAW ARTICLE ABOUT 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA STALLING PROBLEMS. WE HAVE A 2007 THAT HAS EXPERIENCED A MINOR VERSION OF THIS PROBLEM SINCE NEW. RE: 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA CE, PURCHASED IN JULY 2007, APPROX. 15,000 MILES. ON 7/29/09, CAR STALLED TO A COMPLETE STOP WHILE DRIVING. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY (I-95) AS I NORMALLY DO. STALLED ON MY BLOCK AFTER I MADE TURN INTO STREET. AFTER A MINUTE, WAS ABLE TO RESTART WITH MINIMAL ENGINE POWER TO TRAVEL ANOTHER 100 FEET. HAD TO REPEAT THIS UNTIL I REACHED MY DRIVEWAY. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A DEFECT (WIRE FOR THE COMPUTER DISLODGED OR FELL OFF AND CAUSED THE PROBLEM). THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. NO TIME TO PULL OFF TO SIDE OF THE ROAD. ONLY "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT APPEARED WHEN TRYING TO RESTART ENGINE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND WITHOUT SOME INDICATION THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT RESULTING IN INJURY OR WORSE. DEALER REPLACED THE PART THAT DAY. *TR

THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE STILL PERSISTS. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 27,000.

(31,858 MILES ON ODOMETER) THURSTON'S DEALERSHIP IN UKIAH GAVE US GREAT SERVICE AND A QUICK TURN AROUND TIME ENABLING SON TO COMMUTE TO COLLEGE ONCE AGAIN WITH LITTLE INCONVENIENCE. I'M GREATLY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS INCIDENT AND HOPE MY DATA SUBMISSION WILL SERVE TO ALERT SERVICE DEPARTMENTS, MANUFACTURERS AND INVESTIGATORS TO OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE ENGINE COMPUTER CHIP DEFECT. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT THE FAILURES STILL PERSIST. ALL OF THE FAILURES BEGAN FIVE MONTHS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA COROLLA S, AND I BELIEVE THERE IS A MANUFACTURER DESIGN FLAW THAT LEADS TO EXCESSIVE DEBRIS AND ROCKS THAT GAIN ACCESS THROUGH THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND WILL ULTIMATELY PUNCTURE HOLES IN THE AC CONDENSER. SINCE I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE OF HAVING A PUNCTURED HOLE IN MY AC CONDENSER. SINCE THEY SAY IT IS CAUSED BY A ROCK THE DEALERSHIP ACCEPTS NO FAULT AND THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER IT. THEY CHARGE $728 DOLLARS TO REPAIR THE CONDENSER. I AM UPSET BECAUSE I FEEL THAT TOYOTA KNOWS THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS AND HAVE DONE VERY LITTLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. MY CAR ONLY HAS 22,000 MILES ON IT YET THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE.
