The contact owns a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated that while her son was attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic; however, no cause for the failure was found. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the undercarriage and subframe were severely corroded. The contact was informed that the vehicle should not be driven because the wheels might detach from the vehicle. The vehicle remained with the dealer unrepaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 185,000.

The contact stated that after it had rained, the front driver's side seat belt was wet, even though the windows were rolled up and the doors were closed securely. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. -Toyota recalled the vehicles using the same/similar frame has the same rusty issues, like Tacoma. This recalled made me pay attention on this issue and I found the my FJ cruiser is no longer 100% safe while driving. -The frame of the body is very rusty after years which is not normal. I believe most owners of this model having the same issue. There are rust everywhere under the body, when change some parts, it was really hard to do so, need the fire gun to burn all the screws. And the exhaust system all rusty and leaked as well, cost me a lot of money to fix. -The frame may broken anytime while driving which is risky to me and my passengers. -No dealers would like to fix that frame for me unless to pay a huge amount of Labour costs, which is higher than the value of the car. -it has been inspected by more than 5 car specialists and body shop workers, saying that frame is dying and won’t last for long, maybe will completely broken in a few years. -There is no issues on mechanics, just the under body rust. It happened a lot of years maybe 5-7 years before. -I’m from Canada.
My fj cruiser has terrible rust on the frame. It literally looks like it was stored in the ocean for 50 years. This vehicle is from 2007 and should not have this much rust.
I own a 2007 FJ Cruiser with very low mileage (below 80,000). It has a terrible carriage rust problem. I thought I'd had it remediated, finally, after endlessly searching for someone to address it. Dry ice treatment and undercoating were applied recently. I replaced the wheels and tires, as well. All seemed well and it passed inspection. But, then the power steering started stiffening. So I had that attended to. The mechanic then told me the rack and pinion and a plethora of other issues were happening due to rust and corrosion - at an additional $$$$$$ cost. So far, this summer, I have spent close to $5,000 to resurrect this vehicle. I can't afford to invest anymore or justify doing so. I am looking to sell. But first I am investigating the FJ class-action against Toyota. I understand this class-action was denied in part last year in California. I plan to check any legal status that might still exist. My hope is that Toyota will acknowledge the problem with the FJs, recall and FIX the problem or at least reimburse me all my repair/remediation expenses. I know they won't do anything unless there is a lot of pressure and outcry to do so. Although, my FJ spent the first 16 years of its life in NJ (which many claim is the cause and of course is plausible - I don't disagree but not to this degree), it was not driven that much, garaged and well cared for. I did not really notice the rust issue until January 2021 when I took it to the local Toyota dealership. I think I was taking it there for an oil change. They were surprised that I'd driven it there because the brakes were so bad. I had it towed home and spent the next many months searching for someone to fix it. No one wanted to touch it until this summer 2023. The gentleman who dry iced and coated informed me about the lawsuit. I never received any kind of notice (thus far) from Toyota about any recall. So now I am garnering information and investigating the best I can. My FJ looks brand new except for frame corro
Frame rust prematurely affecting integrity of the rear lower control arm mounts. Back half of frame almost completely rusted through requiring a full frame replacement.
took the vehicle to a toyota dealership which stated the frame is dangerous and rusted very badly. they told me to file a complaint since the delaer was not covered under the lemon law
the frame and associated components are severly corroded putting the vehicle in danger of the back axel detaching . i was informed of this by a repair shop who were concerned of the safety of operating vehicle. there is some type of coverage for related vehicles but not for this model. i think this is the same platform which was recalled under a truck model. toyota refuses any coverage or help for this problem. the vehicle has 70k miles but is unsafe to operate. photos are available. although the top of the vehicle is what you would expect with 70k miles, it is unsafe to operate because the back axel could fall off at any time
I was planning on trading in my FJ Cruiser, so I took it to our local mechanic to look it over. After he put it on the lift, he showed me that the frame and gas tank straps were rusted out and that it wasn't safe to drive. I took it to another body repair shop and after putting it up on the lift, he said he has never seen a frame so rusted out in his twenty five years of doing body work. I contacted Toyota and they said they would NOT repair the frame.
Backing out of my driveway we heard a slight pop and a dragging feel on the right passengers front.( thought I ran over a landscape brick) Stopped and inspected nothing was under the vehicle starting to leave my complex vehicle started to shake some. When I got up to 20 MPH it was obvious I should not drive. Called tow truck. Thought I needed ball joints or something similar. Mechanic said frame was completely rusted out and unfixable. The Toyota FJ cruiser is suppose to be a tough off road SUV which I never used for off road driving They even advertised how tough the frame is in commercials . I see there has been recalls for other Toyota models of SUV and trucks of the same year and their is a class action lawsuit already started I think in California. If I would have continued to the freeway A serious accident would had happened. I contacted Toyota and opened a case # [XXX] which after two communications they closed because there is no recall on the vehicle. The car is in great condition other wise. Frame rust has become a major safety issue even though we do rust prevention twice a year.
Toyota used interior metal to make the frame and it has rusted to the point the whole frame needs to replaced.

I purchased this vehicle used in April 2022. It was not driven much until June 2022 because the car was purchased for our son, who attends school at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The goal was to get him a car before his 3 week summer break and he and his sister and his best friend would drive it out to Colorado for him to use throughout his last two years. Their trip began on June 16, 2022, leaving central Ohio. We started getting texts from our daughter about loud noises the car was making while she was sitting in the back seat. Then we started getting texts from our son about noises by the rear tire. We had him check the tires for proper inflation or for any damage. None was reported. My daughter complained about the handling of the vehicle when she was driving. Saying it was not easy to control when going 70 through the plains of the US. They were very pleased to arrive in one piece out in Colorado. My son started to think it was a suspension issue because of the way it handled going over bumpy roads. He took it to a dealer and the dealer took video of the frame, and the black goo used to try and cover the holes and cracks in the frame. $21,000 was their estimate to put a brand new frame on the vehicle. This is a known defect with this vehicle. We should not have to pay for such poor manufacturing.
The vehicles frame and other underbody components have rusted extremely badly. The fuel tank straps broke due to rust, the radiator splash guard fell off while driving due to being very rusty, exhaust clamps have also broken due to rust.

Heavy rust continues to occur and rot frame from seemingly within the frame. Terrible build quality. I have spent thousands keeping this car alive. Plenty of 07-era cars on the road with not this much rust and I clean my CAR!
The SUV frame rails are prematurely rusted completely through from within the frame rails at a minimum of four know locations while other areas of the frame still appears solid (a further deeper inspection will be performed and repairs will be made after documenting the rust failures). We were at risk of the frame rail failing completely under load due to the size/length of rusted our areas which measure up to 12-inches or so, which would lead to loss of control of the vehicle while driving. The vehicle is home in my driveway for repairs of the clutch system (after failure on the roadway at 65mph) when rusted areas were observed April 2022. The dealer performed a recall for an unrelated part on the vehicle in April 2020 along with performing an oil change, however the dealer did not report an issue to me at that time.
Major frame issues due to poor quality steel.
Possible structural frame rust. Just like every other FJ cruiser Toyota has built. I’m making this complaint in hopes that the NHTSA will force Toyota to recall FJ cruiser frames due to the amount of FJ cruisers that have the same frame rust issue.
Frame ha rusted to the point of failure after only 14 years.
FJ Cruiser in Tennessee Was filling up gas tank and heard a noise under the car. I looked and noticed that the back of the gas tank was hanging down. After I got it home, I discovered that the rear fuel strap had broken due to rust. The front fuel strap was also extremely rusted and probably would have failed also
Undercarriage of vehicle was not properly rust coated by manufacturer. Undercarriage is so rusted that my mechanic advised it may need a new frame.
Frame rust all over, going to cost tons of money to fix. Rust rotting through the frame of the car. Shouldn’t be a problem dont live near water or salt area.
Rusted frame. The factory trailer hitch failed because of frame rot and dropped a travel trailer to the ground while towing. Luckily it did not cause an accident and I was able to get another vehicle to tow the travel trailer. I am part of a Facebook group for FJ Cruiser rusted frame owners. This is a common problem on FJ Cruisers and should have been a recall as Toyota did for similar vehicles of the same years that had the same rusted frame issues.
The frame on my 2007 FJ cruiser is rusting very badly. There are large holes in my frame and I have had one of my rear sway bars rust all the way off. I feel like at any moment my car could just fall apart and cause me to wreck.
Excessive corrosion on frame.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated upon inspection, the mechanic discovered that severe corrosion had formed on the entire undercarriage of the vehicle. Prior to the discovery, the contact stated that an unknown part had separated and detached from the vehicle in his driveway due to the corrosion. The dealer then took several pictures of the corrosion on the vehicle. The contact was warned by the dealer to not drive off road or use the vehicle to tow due to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000. Vin was not available.

The back portion of the frame is completely rusted out, has a rot hole, and cracked. It is the same problem that has been happening to similar year model Tacomas, Sequoias, and Tundras. The FJ cruiser now needs to be included in this recall for rusty frame issues. I'm not even in a rust belt state. I'm in Florida. A rear end accident could cause the whole vehicle to collapse and make kill passengers in the back seats. Tons of other complaints filed here. There's a facebook group "FJ Cruiser Rusted Frame Owners Unite". Vehicle has been inspected by insurance for repairs, may just get totaled out as of this writing. No warning symbols or lights.
Frame rust and fuel tank strap rust
recently purchased used from dealership. Excessive rust on lower frame and other components (transmission and power steering lines) as well as suspension. This is not a flood vehicle. Initially took it to Toyota for repairs of the lines and trans. The quote was too high, so I took it to local shops for repair. The local shops were surprised by the amount of rust. Trans was fixed but the shops refused to fix other components that attached to the frame because they fear they will cause more damage. Visited several FJ Cruiser forums and frame rust issues are incredibly common with the FJ, to the point where there are class action lawsuits. Toyota needs to step up and fix this issue for FJ owners!

The mechanic informed him that the undercarriage of the vehicle was extremely corroded and that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The local dealer was contacted about the failure and he was informed over the phone that the entire sub-frame of the vehicle needed to be replaced out of pocket. The vehicle was not yet repaired. Our 2007n Toyota FJ only has 135, 000 miles on it and runs well. We love the vehicle and have a severely rusted out frame. the truck has been adequately maintained but is now unsafe to drive. There are several large areas of rusted frame that are gone, motor mounts have fallen off the frame, the rear axle is barely hanging on because the rear frame is brittle. on the passenger side almost 3 feet of frame is gone from the underside of the vehicle. There is very little metal left to weld to making repairs not possible. Toyota Corperate refuses to assist us and we are stuck with a vehicle that is near total failure.
RUST! Frame rust!
Rear cross member rusted completely through to the point of almost ripping off during towing. The remainder of the frame has excessive rust/corrosion that is not present on other vehicles of the same year.
Due to rust on my 2007 FJ Cruiser, I've had many unexpected expenses. I first was losing brake pressure and my brake lines had to be replaced after breaking when in a mechanic's shop. I've also replaced all four calipers, all the rusted pulleys on the engine, lower control arms that were so rusted that they had to be cut out, and hub assemblies for both front wheels. The hub assembly lead to a failed vehicle inspection for safety concerns. The exhaust pipe literally broke apart near the rear frame crossmember and was sitting on it, so had to be replaced. The exhaust manifold rusted apart and separated from the engine block, leading to dangerous fumes in the engine bay and horrible gas mileage. The O2 sensors were rusted in place and giving poor readings and had to be replaced. Turning the steering wheel became difficult and that was due to being extremely rusty, so it had to be replaced. Shifter cable and PRNDL switch had to be replaced due to not shifting into drive or lower gears. The front differential drain plug was so rusted that the dealership would not attempt to remove it. Now there are holes rusted through the body mount brackets, as well as the passenger side floor. The cargo area's floor where the charcoal EVAP canister connects to the vehicle has completely rusted through, and one of the subframe brackets rusted so badly that it was taken off by hand. Both subframe brackets need to be replaced. The rear control arm mounts are very thin due to extreme rust. My mechanic is now replacing coolant lines because they have rusted through and started to leak, and gas tank straps which were on the verge of failing.

AND ADDITIONAL FRAME RUST IS THE REAR AXLE HOUSING HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT OF WEEPING OIL. THIS IS WHAT I WAS TOLD WHEN I HAD IT LOOKED AT. THIS FJ IS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE DRIVEN AT THIS POINT. IT WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT, THE FRAME IS JUST RUSTING AT AN ALARMING RATE COMPARED TO OTHER TOYOTAS I HAVE OWNED.

MY SON WAS DRIVING HOME FROM SCHOOL WHEN HE HEARD A RATTLE/BANG WHEN HE TOOK A CORNER OR WENT OVER A BUMP. HE TOLD ME ABOUT THE NOISE AS SOON AS HE GOT HOME. WE TOOK THE FJ OUT FOR A DRIVE AND I HEARD THE NOISE COMING FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE. UPON INSPECTING THE EXTERIOR DRIVERS SIDE I FOUND THAT THE LEFT SIDE, REAR TRAILING ARM MOUNTING POINT AND A SECTION OF THE FJ'S FRAME, HAD TORN AWAY FROM THE FRAME. THE TRAILING ARMS WAS NOT FLOATING, UNATTACHED. WE ARE VERY LUCK THAT THE TRAILING DID NOT DROP WHILE MY SON WAS DRIVING HOME, AS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVEN INTO THE PAVEMENT, POSSIBLY CAUSING A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT. I HAVE CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE, WHO CAN PROVIDE NOT SOLUTION ON HOW TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE. AGAIN, I AM LUCKY MY SON WAS ON SECONDARY ROADS AND NOT THE HIGHWAY AND THE TRAILING ARM FELL TO THE PAVEMENT.

TOYOTA'S HAVE BEEN HAVING RUST ISSUES WITH FRAMES. A GOVERNMENT MANDATED FIX FOR TUNDRAS AND TACOMAS HAVE BEEN APPROVED, BUT NOT FOR FJ CRUISERS, EVEN THOUGH IT'S A SIMILAR MODEL. I NEED TO HAVE MY FRAME RUST ISSUES FIXED IN ORDER TO PASS INSPECTION.

MY 2007 FJ CRUISER HAS MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH RUST. THIS INCLUDES BEING INFORMED TODAY THAT THE FRAME HAS HOLES THAT HAVE RUSTED THROUGH AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION. I HAVE ALREADY PUT A LOT OF MONEY INTO THE VEHICLE REPLACING RUSTED PARTS INCLUDING REPLACING THE FUEL TANK STRAPS LAST YEAR, PARTS OF THE SUSPENSION AND RADIATOR. THIS SEEMS EXCESSIVE DAMAGE DUE TO RUST AND CREATES AN UNSAFE TOYOTA PRODUCT.
IT HAS TAKEN A FEW YEARS SINCE I KEEP MY FJ CRUISER GARAGED, BUT I FOUND A SOUND MAT ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOORS THAT RETAIN WATER AND CAUSE RUST. MY PROBLEM RIGHT NOW IS IN THE LEFT DOOR (DRIVER'S SIDE) AND THE RUST FROM INSIDE THE DOOR HAS FINALLY MADE IT'S WAY COMPLETELY THROUGH THE DOOR. I AM ATTACHING PHOTOS SHOWING THE PERFORATION WHICH IS WELL OVER 1/8 OF AN INCH DEEP. VEHICLES ARE DESIGNED TO LET WATER IN THE DOOR THEN DRAIN THROUGH THE DRAIN HOLES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR BUT TOYOTA BUT THIS SOUND MAT ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOOR WHICH CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR MYSELF AND A FEW OTHER UNFORTUNATE FJ CRUISER OWNERS. I HAD BOTH OF MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME AND I AM CERTAIN THAT IF I WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED IT WOULD HAVE CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO BE OUT OF CONTROL EVEN WORSE AND MORE SO IF I WAS IN A TURN. I HAVE COME TO DISCOVER THAT MANY FJ CRUISERS ARE SUFFERING FROM THE SAME ROTTING ISSUE AND THAT TOYOTA HAS A HISTORY OF FRAME ROT ISSUES ON OTHER MODELS THAT HAVE SINCE BEEN RECALLED FOR REPLACEMENT. IN MY OPINION BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE, IF THIS HAPPENED TO MY FJ THEN IT WILL HAPPENED TO MANY OTHERS AND SOMEONE WILL GET SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED.

THEY WANTED TO SHOW ME THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY SAID IT WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE MECHANIC SHOWED ME THAT THE FRAME OF MY FJ WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH WITH MULTIPLE HOLES IN RIGHT SIDE OF THE FRAME - SOME HOLES MEASURING OVER 5 INCHES IN LENGTH. IT CRUMBLED WHEN TOUCHED. I WAS TOLD THAT THE REST OF THE VEHICLE WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION BUT IT WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE OF THE CONDITION OF THE FRAME. I HAVE FOUND OUT SINCE, THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE 2007 FJ CRUISER MODELS BUT TOYOTA HAS YET TO RECALL THE FRAMES. I'VE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THEY HAVE RECALLED OTHER MODELS DUE TO PREMATURELY RUSTED OUT FRAMES, BUT THE FJ'S HAVE NOT BEEN INCLUDED IN THOSE RECALLS. I WAS STUCK IN TORONTO UNABLE TO DRIVE BACK TO NY, SO MY FAMILY INCURRED MASSIVE UNEXPECTED COSTS TO GET HOME, AND WORK & SCHOOL WERE MISSED BECAUSE OF THIS SITUATION. I'VE BEEN TOLD IT WILL COST ME APPROX $15 - 20K TO GET MY TRUCK REPAIRED, BUT I BELIEVE THAT COST IS TOYOTA'S RESPONSIBILITY. IN THE MEANTIME IT'S UNSAFE TO DRIVE SO I'M WITHOUT A VEHICLE MAKING MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF MY FAMILY MORE DIFFICULT SEEING AS IT'S OUR ONLY VEHICLE... I BROUGHT TO A WELDER WHO SPECIALIZES IN THIS TYPE OF WORK AND WAS TOLD 5000+ IN LABOR ALONE AND THATS WITHOUT SEEING UNDER THE GAS TANK SO HE SAID IT WOULDNT BE WORTH IT AS HE BANGED OF THE RUST IN OTHER SPOTS AND THERE WAS NO METAL TO WELD TO LEFT.BRAKE AND FUEL LINES ARE SWELLED FROM THE RUSTY METAL TUBING.I CONSIDER MYSELF LUCKY AS I OFTEN TAKE MY GRANDKIDS IN THE FJ. SO NOW IM LEFT WITH MY OTHER FJ THAT I BOUGHT NEW IN 2008 WHICH IS OK UNDERNEATH.THE ISSUE IS WITH ALL THE 2007 FJ FRAMES LIKE THEIR TUNDRAS AND TACOMAS. THE VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN MAINTAINED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND IS OTHERWISE IN GOOD CONDITION. THE RUST IS SEVERE IN THE FRAME PILLARS, JOINTS AND ATTACHED COMPONENTS. IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT PROTECT PASSENGERS BECAUSE THE FRAME WOULD QUICKLY DISINTEGRATE. THE TOYOTA DEALER STATED THAT UNLESS TOYOTA ISSUES A RECALL THE COST TO REPLACE THE FRAME IS AT LEAST $15,000.

WHILE DRIVING NORMALLY AND LESS THAN 10 MILES PER HOUR, THANKFULLY ON A REGULAR, PAVED, LOCAL ROAD WITH LITTLE TRAFFIC, THE DRIVER SIDE REAR SUSPENSION SPRING SEAT AND STABILIZER BAR ATTACHMENT POINT ON REAR AXLE SUDDENLY, UNEXPECTEDLY, AND WITHOUT WARNING JUST TORE APART AND OFF OF THE AXLE HOUSING TO WHICH IT WAS MOUNTED AND THE RESULTING SHARP AND HEAVY METAL EDGED PARTS COMPLETELY SHEARED OFF A BRAKE LINE RELEASING ALL HYDRAULIC BRAKE FLUID AND CAUSING THE IMMEDIATE LOSS OF ALL NORMAL BRAKING ABILITY. THANKFULLY NOBODY WAS INJURED, BUT THE CAR CAN'T BE DRIVEN AT ALL NOW, BECAUSE IT HAS NO BRAKES AT ALL, OTHER THAN THE MECHANICAL EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND BY USING TRANSMISSION "BRAKING." LOTS OF RUST UNDER CAR SINCE WE BOUGHT IT USED FROM DEALER IN MORRISTOWN NJ, APPARENTLY DUE TO LOW QUALITY STEEL USED IN INITIAL CONSTRUCTION AND APPARENT LACK OF ADEQUATE FACTORY ANTI-RUST TREATMENT OF FRAME AND OTHER UNDERCARRIAGE PARTS. INTERIOR AND PAINTED TOP BODY PARTS SHOW NO RUST ISSUES. HOWEVER, THE UNDERSIDE, IS FULL OF LOTS OF RUST. THIS IS APPARENTLY A WELL-KNOWN, VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA FJ MODELS. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND IT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA IMMEDIATELY! I'M MAKING PLANS TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION AND POSSIBLE REPAIRS. FINALLY, AS FAR AS I AM AWARE, THIS CAR HAS NEVER DONE ANY SIGNIFICANT OR TAXING "OFF-ROADING."

IN RECENT OBSERVATIONS NON-JOINTED RUST METAL IS ALSO SUFFERING RUST THROUGH IN OTHER PARTS OF THESE FRAMES. MY PERSONAL VEHICLE EXHIBITS ALL THE SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE RUSTING INCLUDING ONE RUST THROUGH HOLE AT THE REAR CROSS MEMBER LOCATION UNDERNEATH THE REAR BUMPER. THIS LOCATION IS NEITHER ACCESSIBLE NOR VISIBLE WITHOUT THE BUMPER REMOVED. THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE CROSS MEMBER EXHIBITS LARGE SEVER FLAKING RUST PRESENT BOTH OUTSIDE AND INSIDE THE FRAME. THEY ALSO SAID FOR ME TO CONTACT CORPORATE TOYOTA AND OPEN A CASE. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP SAID THEY TAKE THIS EXTREMELY SERIOUS BECAUSE OF THE TACOMA RUSTED FRAME RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY CAN NOT MAKE A DECISION AND THAT IT MUST BE MADE BY CORPORATE. THE DEALERSHIP SUPPLIED THE PICTURES SO CORPORATE COULD SEE THE FRAME ROTTING. I STAYED IN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH A DEALERSHIP REPRESENTATIVE THE ENTIRE TIME. EVERY CONVERSATION THAT I HAD WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE ENDS WITH THEM SAYING 'SORRY, THERE IS NOT A RECALL RIGHT NOW'. THE DEALERSHIP REPRESENTATIVE BECAME FRUSTRATED AND EVEN SAID SHE WOULD NOT PUT HER KIDS IN THE FJ CRUISER BECAUSE ITS UNSAFE. EVERYONE AGREES THAT A 2007 FJ CRUISER FRAME SHOULD NOT BE RUSTING OUT LIKE THIS. FINALLY, THE DEALERSHIP WAS WHO TOLD ME I SHOULD CONTACT NHTSA AND START THIS PROCESS. I HAVE BEEN READING ON FJ CRIUISER SPECIFIC FORUMS RECENTLY ABOUT OTHERS HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. IT SEEMS REALLY WIDE SPREAD.

I HAD INTENDED TO TOW A BOAT WITH THIS BUT AFTER A TOYOTA OF KINGSPORT DEALER RUST INSPECTION HE SAID, 'THERE IS A LARGE AMOUNT OF RUST UNDER THE TRUCK, IT IS NOT SAFE TO TOW WITH BECAUSE OF RUST DAMAGE. THERE APPEARS TO BE OTHER RUST DAMAGE TO CRITICAL AREAS OF THE FRAME'. I HAVE HAD OTHER MECHANICS LOOK AT IT AND THEY ALL AGREE THAT THE FRAME NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, AND ANYTHING TOUCHING IT THAT IS RUSTED. ONE MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THE VENT FOR THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS RUSTED OVER PREVENTING IT FROM VENTING PROPERLY. WE REPLACED THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL FLUID BUT HE SAID IT MAY BE IN POOR SHAPE ALSO. I BELIEVE THIS IS AN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF RUST AND IS DUE TO MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION PROBLEM OR POOR RUST COATING FROM THE FACTORY. AFTER BEING INSPECTED BY THE TOYOTA DEALER, THE WINDSHIELD HAS TO BE ENTIRELY REPLACED AT OWNERS COST. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD, NOR WAS THIS AN ACCIDENT OR A MAJOR INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. TOYOTA KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM THAT DUE TO THE WAY THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED, THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR THE WINDSHIELD TO CRACK. I ALSO SENT A REPORT TO TOYOTA INFORMING THEM OF THIS PROBLEM.

THE CRACK SEEMS TO HAVE DEVELOPED DUE TO PRESSURE STRESS- A DEFECT FROM MANUFACTURING. THERE ARE NUMEROUS OTHER REPORTS FROM OTHER OWNERS OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE WITH SIMILAR REPORTS, OFTEN TIMES, EVEN AFTER HAVING THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED. ALSO, THE INABILITY TO EXIT THE VEHICLE FROM THE BACK SEAT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, WAS IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT THE FRONT PASSENGER OPENING THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR FIRST. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED SPACE LEFT BETWEEN THE END OF THE ROOF AND THE BEGINNING OF THE REAR DOOR DRAINED SO POORLY THAT LEAVES AND OTHER NATURAL DEBRIS WOULD BUILD UP TO THE POINT THAT, WHEN IT RAINED, WATER WOULD LEAK INTO THE CARGO AREA. ALSO, DESPITE THE CLAIMED GAS MILEAGE REPORTED ON THE WINDOW STICKER (20 MPG) THE CONSUMER NEVER ACHIEVED MORE THAN 17.1 MPG, EVEN THOUGH THE BULK OF HIS DRIVING WAS DONE ON THE HIGHWAY.

THE BULGES AND CRACKS IN THE INNER FENDERS SEEM TO BE ATTRIBUTED TO A TOYOTA DESIGN FLAW THROUGH CERTAIN VIN NUMBERS. SOME SPECULATION WAS MADE THAT AFTERMARKET STEEL BUMPERS HAD PUT EXTRA WEIGHT AND STRESS ON THE FENDERS, CAUSING THEM TO CRACK, BUT HUNDREDS OF FJ'S EQUIPPED WITH AFTERMARKET BUMPERS SUFFERED NO DAMAGE. IT IS RUMORED THAT TOYOTA ADDRESSED THE PROBLEM IN MOST 2008 MODELS BY BOXING THE INNER FENDER AND ADDING A THIRD LAYER OF METAL AND A NEW BOLT INSIDE THE FENDER. WHILE DOING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE I NOTICED CRACKS IN BOTH INNER FENDER WELLS OF MY 1 YEAR OLD TOYOTA FJ CRUISER. I THEN STARTING DOING RESEARCH AND FOUND MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER AND SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT AND AT THE TIME THEY SAID THAT IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY WHEN A FIX OR REPAIR WAS AVAILABLE. SEVERAL MONTHS WENT BY WITHOUT A RESPONSE AND DURING THAT TIME I HAD INSTALLED NEW TIRES AND SUSPENSION. I THEN HAD SOME MORE SERVICE AT ANOTHER DEALER SEVERAL MONTHS LATER AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE FENDERS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND ANY ALTERATIONS FROM STOCK WOULD VOID ALL WARRANTY. THIS WAS NOTED WELL BEFORE ANY MODIFICATIONS AND I DON'T SEE WHERE DIFFERENT TIRES, BUMPERS, OR SUSPENSION WOULD HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH FENDERS. THE REPAIR WOULD REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE INNER FENDER WELLS. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF MY SALES REP AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND HE PROCEEDED TO ASK ME IF I HAD EVER DRIVEN THROUGH ANY CONSTRUCTION SITES, WHICH I HAD NOT. HE THEN REFERRED ME TO A TOYOTA PAINT SPECIALIST WHO THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON BECAUSE LEAD IS NO LONGER AN INGREDIENT IN THE PAINT, WHICH IS CAUSING IT TO BECOME VERY BRITTLE. SINCE I AM LEASING THE CAR I WAS CONCERNED THAT I WOULD BE CHARGED AT LEASE TERMINATION FOR THIS BUT WAS ASSURED BY THE SPECIALIST THAT THIS WAS CONSIDERED "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" ON THE CAR. HE SUGGESTED THAT I PURCHASE TOUCH-UP PAINT AND APPLY AS NEEDED. HOWEVER, IT HAS NOW BEEN WELL OVER A YEAR AND THE PAINT NOT ONLY CONTINUES TO CHIP FURTHER, BUT I'VE BEGUN TO NOTICE A FEW SMALL AREAS WHERE THERE IS ALSO CORROSION DEVELOPING. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE FRONT IN UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS AND ESPECIALLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE VEHICLES CRASH RATING AND HOW IT HAS BEEN AFFECTED. IT APPEARS TO BE BULDGING AT TWO CRUMPLE ZONES ON THE UNI BODY. NO OTHER APPARENT BULDGES, RIPS, OR DEFORMITIES ANYWHERE ELSE. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN IMPACT SITUATION GREATER THAN A SHOPPING CART AT THE SUPER MARKET ROLLING INTO MY VEHICLE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A NATURAL OCCURRING PROBLEM WHICH THE TOYOTA DESIGNERS DID NOT TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN BUILDING THE VEHICLE. THE BUCKLING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAS ALSO SHIFTED THE FENDER BACKWARD CAUSING A PINCH AT THE HOOD CORNER AND THE FRONT EDGE OF THE DOOR. I AM NO LONGER ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. I AM CONCERNED THAT BECAUSE THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED AREA OF THE BODY THAT THIS ISSUE MIGHT IMPACT THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE VEHICLE IN AN ACCIDENT, OR EVEN UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, I AM THE OWNER OF A TOYOTA FJ CRUISER 2007. AFTER ~3500 MILES, I DISCOVERED CRACKS IN THE BODY FRAME (FRONT INNER FENDER RAILS - ENGINE BAY). I DID ADDRESS THIS ISSUE TO TOYOTA, WHO VOIDED THE WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE DUE TO "SIGNS OF IMPACT, NAMELY SCRATCHES ON THE UNDER BODY". I DO NOT CONCUR WITH THIS STATEMENT, SINCE SCRATCHES CAN NOT BE RELATED TO IMPACT STRENGTH. I USE THIS VEHICLE FOR OFF ROAD, WHICH DOES YIELD TO SCRATCHES IN THE BODY. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY IMPACT. INTERNET RESEARCH ON FJ CRUISER FORUMS SHOWS THAT THIS BECOMES A VERY COMMON PHENOMENON AND APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW IN THE FRONT END OF THE FJ CRUISER. I AM CONCERNED THAT DUE TO THE CRACKS IN THE BODY (CRASH ZONE), THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE IS NEGATIVELY AFFECTED. I WOULD BE ABLE TO PROVIDE YOU A VERY DETAILED REPORT ON THE FINDINGS, AS WELL AS WITH THE LINKS TO A NUMBER OF FJ CRUISER OWNERS FACING THE SAME PROBLEM.
