Instrument panel cluster failure. Panel goes black while driving and lose power. Vehicle won’t start or shut off. My vehicle was getting serviced at the dealership and they couldn’t start the vehicle. I was told the instrument panel cluster was the problem. I contacted Toyota Customer Service, and was told they were aware of the issue. They had issued an extended warranty and sent out a letter to all owners this warranty has expired in 2016. If you purchased your vehicle after 2016 you would not have received any notice regarding this. While driving you can’t see you speed, your gear selection, fuel level, lights and no warning lights. The warning is that your vehicle won’t start or shut off.

I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35 MPH ON A CITY STREET WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. I TRIED TO PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE, BUT IT KEPT SHIFTING BACK INTO NEUTRAL. LUCKILY THERE WAS ENOUGH DISTANCE BETWEEN ME AND THE CAR BEHIND ME WAS THAT IT DIDN'T RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. I HELD THE GEARSHIFT IN DRIVE WITH MY RIGHT HAND AND STEERED WITH MY LEFT UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO TURN OFF OF THE STREET INTO A PARKING LOT. I COULD NOT PUT THE CAR IN PARK. I PRESSED THE PARK BUTTON AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, WAITED A MINUTE AND STARTED IT AGAIN. I COULD SHIFT INTO REVERSE, BUT IT CONTINUED TO POP BACK INTO NEUTRAL WHEN IN DRIVE. THE ELECTRONIC DASH (HEADS UP INSTRUMENT DISPLAY) ON OUR 2007 PRIUS HAS INTERMITTENTLY FAILED TO LIGHT OVER THE LAST YEAR. YESTERDAY, IT FAILED AND ALSO WOULDN'T TURN OFF. WE ALWAYS USE THE REMOTE (KEYLESS) IGNITION SYSTEM. BUT, AFTER THE FAILURES YESTERDAY I PUT THE ELECTRONIC KEY FOB INTO THE HOLE IN THE DASH THINKING THAT MIGHT HELP. INSTEAD, I COULDN'T REMOVE IT. I TRIED EVERY COMBINATION OF PRESSING BUTTONS (THE PARK AND POWER BUTTONS) AND OTHER CONTROLS, BRAKES PEDAL, SHIFTER AND IT STILL WOULDN'T SHUT OFF OR LIGHT UP THE DISPLAY. AFTER HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON IN FOR AN EXTENDED AMOUNT OF TIME, IT TURNED OFF AND EJECTED THE KEY FOB. BUT THEN THE CAR WOULDN'T LIGHT UP THE INSTRUMENT DISPLAY OR START. THIS MORNING, AGAIN, IT WOULD NOT START. I WAS TOLD BY AN EXPERIENCED PRIUS MECHANIC (ALSO AN OWNER) THAT THESE WERE CLASSIC SYMPTOMS OF A FAILING POWER AMPLIFIER FOR THE DISPLAY AND THAT IT WAS A "SECRET WARRANTY," A VOLUNTARY REPAIR TO AVOID A GOVERNMENT RECALL, BUT THAT TOYOTA WOULD ONLY DO IT FOR 10 YEARS. THE DEALER REFUSED TO DO IT UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THE SYMPTOMS BEGAN BEFORE THE CAR WAS 10 YEARS OLD. THEY TOLD ME THE RECALL WAS ONLY GOOD FOR NINE YEARS. THEY WANT $765 FOR THE REPAIR. IT STRIKES ME THAT THIS IS A SAFETY FAILURE AND SHOULD BE COVERED, PERIOD. WITH NO INDICATION OF SPEED OR OTHER FUNCTIONS (ABS FUNCTION, TRACTION CONTROL, ETC.), OR TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF, IT IS UNSAFE TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE. THE VARIOUS FAILURES, INCLUDING LOSS OF CRUISE CONTROL WHILE IN MOTION, TOOK PLACE WHEN THE CAR WAS COLD AND WHEN IT WAS WARMED UP. AT REST AND IN MOTION.

AFTER SPEEDING UP TO PASS ANOTHER CAR ON A SLIGHT UPGRADE (2 LANE COUNTRY ROAD), MY PRIUS CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I COULD NOT SLOW THE CAR DOWN TO THE SPEED LIMIT USING THE BRAKE PEDAL. FOR ABOUT FIFTEEN MINUTES, I KEPT TRYING TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN, LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO PULL OVER WHERE I WOULDN'T HIT ANYTHING. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS NOT STUCK & NO FLOOR MAT WAS TOUCHING EITHER PEDAL. THE ONLY WAY I COULD STOP WAS WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I THOUGHT THE CAR MIGHT EXPLODE, BUT LATER REALIZED THE SMOKE WAS POURING OUT FROM MY BRAKES. I MANEUVERED TO THE BERM OF A BRIDGE OVER A LAKE, JUST BEFORE THE ROAD WENT DOWN TO ONE LANE FOR CONSTRUCTION. THEN I TURNED THE CAR OFF. TEN MINUTES AFTER THIS ORDEAL (VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY), I RESTARTED THE CAR, BUT THE ENGINE BEGAN RACING AGAIN WITHOUT ANY TOUCH ON THE GAS PEDAL, SO I QUICKLY TURNED IT OFF. LUCKILY, I HADN'T COLLIDED WITH ANYTHING.

THE TRACTION-CONTROL SYSTEM IN THE PRIUS IS, I BELIEVE, DANGEROUS. WHEN THE SLIGHTEST DEGREE OF WHEEL SLIP IS DETECTED, IT ESSENTIALLY SHUTS OFF POWER TO THE WHEELS FOR A MOMENT. ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS, WHEN ACCELERATING TO MERGE IN WITH TRAFFIC ON A WET ROAD, THE SYSTEM'S REACTION HAS SLOWED ME DOWN TO WHAT I BELIEVE IS A DANGEROUS EXTENT. ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS, I HAVE ENDED UP STUCK IN SNOW BECAUSE THE SYSTEM IS SO EAGER TO KEEP ME FROM SPINNING WHEELS AT ALL. I CONTACTED TOYOTA, AND THEIR REPLY WAS TO THE EFFECT THAT THIS SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO PROTECT THE DRIVE TRAIN, AND THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING TO REMEDY WHAT I SEE AS A DANGEROUS FLAW. THE ONLY CONCEIVABLE WAY SUCH A SYSTEM COULD BE PROTECTING THE DRIVE TRAIN WOULD BE BY LIMITING ENGINE RPM TO A SAFE POINT; HOWEVER, THE SYSTEM GOES FAR BEYOND JUST KEEPING RPM DOWN. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE RESPONSE TO "WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN" IS NOT REALLY ACCURATE. IT HAS HAPPENED ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS, AND THE DATE LISTED IS MERELY THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE. ALSO, THE SPEED IS JUST FROM THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE.

IT WENT OVER A 1 FT CONCRETE CURB LIMITER INTO THE STREET AND AFTER A 180 DEGREE LOOP IN REVERSE I FINALLY HIT THE E-BRAKE HARD WHILE AT THE SAME TIME I RAN OVER A PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC LIGHT AND HIT A TREE WITH THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TO A FULL STOP. AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DURING ALL THIS PERIOD OF PROBABLY LESS THAN 10 SECONDS THE FOOT BRAKE WAS NOT RESPONDING ANY MORE. AFTER IMPACT THE ENGINE DID NOT START ANYMORE AND THE CAR WAS TOWED FROM THE SCENE.

THERE SEEMED TO BE NO REACTION TO MY FRANTIC STEERING AND BRAKING IN THE ATTEMPT TO RETURN THE CAR TO THE ROAD. AFTER THE CAR HIT THE GUARDRAIL IT TRAVELED ABOUT 15 FEET SPUN BACK OUT INTO THE SOUTHBOUND LANE AND WAS HIT ON THE REAR RIGHT SIDE BY A CAR TRAVELING IN THE SOUTHBOUND LANE. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO BE PROPELLED ACROSS 2 NORTHBOUND LANES OF TRAFFIC AND COME TO REST WITH REAR OF MY CAR EMBEDDED INTO THE FAR SIDE GUARDRAIL. MIRACULOUSLY NO ONE WAS HURT. ON MAY 16, 2015, WHILE DRIVING MY SECOND-GENERATION 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS ON THE FREEWAY, I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER, ALONG WITH THE ILLUMINATION ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL OF THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT, MASTER WARNING LIGHT AND HYBRID WARNING LIGHT. I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SUMMON EMERGENCY HELP. A NEARBY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE HYBRID INVERTER WATER PUMP, WHICH FIXED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT ADVISE ME OF A SAFETY RECALL. TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER TODAY STATED THAT THE ORIGINAL HYBRID INVERTER WATER PUMP WAS REPLACED ON APRIL 7, 2011, UNDER TOYOTA LIMITED SERVICE NOTICE A0N; HENCE, TOYOTA REFUSED MY PHONE REQUEST FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF MY MAY, 2015, REPAIR EXPENSE. THE 2011 "A0N" REPLACEMENT PUMP APPEARS TO HAVE FAILED BY THE SAME FAILURE MECHANISM LEADING TO RECALL CAMPAIGN "C0U", WHICH IS DIFFERENT FROM THE A0N FAILURE MECHANISM.

WHILE DRIVING UPHILL ON A CURVED, SHOULDER-LESS ROAD, MY CAR SPONTANEOUSLY SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, CAUSING IT TO LOSE ALL POWER AS WELL AS POWER BRAKE. I ATTEMPTED TO PHYSICALLY HOLD THE GEAR SHIFT IN "DRIVE", BUT THIS DID NOT BRING POWER BACK, NOR DID IT CHANGE THE LIGHT ON THE DASH FROM "NEUTRAL". AT FIRST THE CAR WOULD SHIFT INTO REVERSE, AND I WAS ABLE TO BACK INTO A WIDER PART OF THE ROAD. IT THEN STOPPED SHIFTING INTO ANY GEAR. I ENDED UP HAVING THE CAR TOWED HOME IN NEUTRAL, WITH POOR (NON-POWER) BRAKING. I'VE SINCE DONE A GOOGLE SEARCH AND SEE THAT THIS IS A RECURRENT PROBLEM WITH 200-SOMETHING PRIUSES, BASED ON CONSUMER AFFAIRS, TOYOTA NATION, PRIUS ONLINE, AND CAR PROBLEM ZOO.

I HAD MY CAR IN FOR 110,000 MILE SERVICE ON APRIL 25. THEY CHANGED THE OIL, ROTATED THE TIRES, INSTALLED A NEW AIR FILTER AND SAID THAT I NEEDED NEW FRONT BRAKES AND THEY CLEANED AND ADJUSTED THE BACK BRAKES. YESTERDAY AFTER BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE THE BRAKE LIGHT WARNING LIGHT ALONG WITH THE ABS AND VSC LIGHT CAME ON BRIEFLY. ON INTERSTATE 90 NEARING DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND ALL OF THESE LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN ALONG WITH A NOISE. I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER AND TALKED TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR AND ASKED IF IT WAS SAFE TO GO TO CLEVELAND AND BACK AND HE SAID IF THE BRAKES WORK, IT PROBABLY JUST A SWITCH AND IT WOULD BE OK TO BRING IT IN TOMORROW. WHILE I STILL HAD HIM ON THE PHONE, WE LOST ALL POWER TO THE VEHICLE AND IT DECELERATED DOWN TO 30 BEFORE WE WERE ABLE TO REACH AN EXIT RAMP AND STOP THE CAR IN THE GRASS. I WAS INFORMED TODAY THAT THE PROBLEM IS A LOW VOLT BATTERY THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR $299. AT NO TIME DID A LOW BATTERY LIGHT COME ON AND I HAVE NOT HAD TROUBLE STARTING THE CAR NOR DO I HAVE DIM LIGHTS. YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC BECAUSE WHEN IT LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE TIME TO GO, WITH THE PAUSE IT IS NO LONGER SAFE TO PULL OUT. I CALL IT STALLING OUT. THERE IS A RECALL FOR PRIUS THAT BEGAN ON JANUARY 17,2013. IT STATES: THE CORRODED WIRE MAY BREAK AND THE WATER PUMP COULD STOP. YESTERDAY I WAS DRIVING BACK FROM DROPPING OFF MY SON AT SCHOOL, GETTING ON THE FREEWAY, MY GAS PEDAL WAS ABOUT 1/2 WAY DEPRESSED, THE NEXT THING I KNOW THE GAS PEDAL IS LEAVING MY FOOT AS IF IN CRUISE CONTROL AND FLOORING ITSELF, THE CAR ENGINE IS RACING FULL SPEED, FORTUNATELY I HAD RUN THIS THROUGH MY HEAD BEFORE, AND I WAS COMPETENT ENOUGH TO APPLY THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD, PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND SAFELY PULL OFF THE FREEWAY AND TURN OFF THE CAR. SO I WAS TOWED INTO TOYOTA, GIVEN A LOANER CAR AND TOLD THAT SOMEONE FROM THE FACTORY WOULD COME OUT TO RUN SOME TESTS. FIRST LET ME STATE, THAT AFTER THIS WAS OVER I DID LOOK DOWN TO SEE IF MY FLOOR MAT WAS A FACTOR IN THIS, BUT ALSO KNOWING THAT THE PEDAL HAD LEFT MY FOOT AND HEADED FOR THE FLOOR, THE FLOOR MAT WAS A GOOD 2 INCHES FROM THE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE REPAIR FOR THE RECALL ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS PERFORMED. THE DEALER DID NOT EXPLAIN THE REPAIR IN DETAIL. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER BUT WAS OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 31,541.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED TWO EPISODES WHERE MY 2007 PRIUS ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. ONE WAS WHILE BACKING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY BY MY CLASSROOM ONTO THE STREET. I PUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE CAR LITERALLY TOOK OFF BACKWARDS LIKE A ROCKET. I REMOVED MY RIGHT FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL AND APPLIED THE BRAKES--NOTHING HAPPENED!! I ENDED UP WITH BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE ACROSS THE STREET IN PARKING SPACES BY THE LIBRARY. THIS HAPPENED DEC. 22 AT 2:15, WE WERE DISMISSED EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS BREAK, IF IT HAD BEEN ANY OTHER DAY THIS STREET IS USED BY TEACHERS TO TRANSFER ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TO THE LIBRARY FOR THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. MY HUSBAND CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND REPORTED THIS, HE WAS TOLD OUR CAR WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. THE LATEST INCIDENT WAS LAST WEEK, APRIL 7 AT 7:35 IN THE MORNING. I PULL INTO THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT DRIVING VERY SLOWLY TO MY PARKING SPACE, I START TO TURN INTO THE SPACE, I REMOVED MY RIGHT FOOT FROM THE GAS, AND FOR THE SECOND TIME IT TAKES OFF LIKE A ROCKET AND DOES NOT REACT TO BRAKE APPLICATION. IN FRONT OF MY PARKING SPACE IS A DROP OFF AND THEN A CONCRETE BLOCK WALL, I TURNED THE WHEEL SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID THESE, DID A PARTIAL DONUT TURN, ENDED UP ONCE AGAIN WITH BOTH FEET PRESSING THE BRAKE AS FAR AS POSSIBLE. 1. MY PARTNER LEFT WORK AT @ 4 PM AND STARTED TO DRIVE HOME. IT WAS A CLEAR DAY WITH NO PRECIPITATION. HE WAS ABOUT A MILE AWAY FROM WORK PROCEEDING WEST ON NJ STATE ROUTE 561 WHEN HE CAME TO A STOP 1-2 FEET BEHIND A TRUCK AT A STOPLIGHT. HE HAD HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE. 2. HE WAS CAUGHT OFF GUARD AS THE CAR ACCELERATED FORWARD INTO THE TRUCK AHEAD OF HIM WITHOUT HIS DOING ANYTHING TO THE ACCELERATOR. DAMAGE WAS CAUSED TO THE TRUCKS BUMPER AND TO THE PRIUS' BUMPER AND HOOD. WE HAD NEVER HAD THIS OCCUR IN THE CAR AND HAD NO OTHER PROBLEMS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. 3. A POLICE REPORT WAS MADE AND THE CAR WAS DRIVEN HOME. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER, WHERE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED AND SERVICED, WAS CONTACTED AND THEY ASKED US TO CONTACT TOYOTA "EXPERIENCE," AND WE GAVE A FULL REPORT AND RECEIVED A CASE #: 1004081978. WE THEN BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER'S BODY SHOP THE NEXT DAY AND AWAITED OUR INSURANCE CLAIMS ADJUSTER AND THE "EXPERIENCE" TEAM TO COME AND GET THE DATA OFF THE COMPUTER TO SEE WHAT MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE ACCIDENT. I AM WRITING TO EXPLAIN TWO PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD WITH MY TOYOTA PRIUS. I WANT TO HAVE A DOCUMENTED OF REPORT OF THESE PROBLEMS IN THE EVENT THAT THEY RESULT IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, AS I FEAR THEY MIGHT. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THESE PROBLEMS ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS. THE FIRST PROBLEM OCCURS WHENEVER I DRIVE OVER ROUGH OR UNEVEN PAYMENT. WHEN THE TRACTION CONTROL KICKS IN, IT FEELS AS IF THE CAR IS SURGING AND IT IS NECESSARY TO STEP ON THE BRAKE, SOMETIMES WITH BOTH FEET, VERY HARD IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN OR STOP. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR IN FOR THIS PROBLEM A COUPLE OF TIMES. I HAVE DRIVEN CARS WITH TRACTION CONTROL IN THE PAST AND NEVER FELT THE SURGING THAT OCCURS WITH THE PRIUS, WHEN DRIVING OTHER CARS USING OTHER TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS. THE OTHER ISSUE WITH THE CAR IS THAT OCCASIONALLY, WHEN ACCELERATING, MY NORMALLY SILENT PRIUS MAKES A LOUD REVVING NOISE. WHENEVER I HEAR THIS NOISE, I IMMEDIATELY TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS. THANKFULLY, SO FAR, THE NOISE STOPS AND THE CAR SLOWS DOWN. THE NOISE DOES NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME I ACCELERATE, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY. I AM NOT SURE IF OTHER PRIUS OWNERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS, HAVE REPORTED THIS ISSUE OR NOTICED THE REVVING NOISE PRIOR TO THEIR ACCIDENTS. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN. THE IDENTICAL FAILURE OCCURRED ON A SEPARATE OCCASION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

ALSO AT THIS TIME, A CADILLAC SUV WAS FOLLOWING ME TO CLOSE ON THIS GEORGIA SECONDARY-HIGHWAY#121 WHEREBY I VISUALIZE A TRAGIC ACCIDENT ABOUT TO OCCUR. AFTER ABOUT A HALF-MILE RIDING THE BRAKES AND FEELING THE PULLING TORQUE OF THOSE POWERFUL ELECTRIC MOTORS ON THE FRONT WHEELS, I SAW MY CHANCE TO EXIT AHEAD WHERE TWO TRASH DUMPSTERS APPEARED. DRIVABILITY AND SAFETY ' THE CRUISE CONTROL HOLDS THE MINIMUM SPEED BUT ALLOWS OVER SPEED CONDITIONS. WHILE RETURNING FROM DANBURY ON ROUTE 7 THE CRUISE CONTROL HOLDS 40MPH UNTIL GOING DOWNHILL. ON DOWNHILL SLOPES THE SPEED INCREASES AND INTERVENTION IS REQUIRED TO TURN OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL AND APPLY THE BRAKES. 3. I HAVE OWED BOTH A 2005 AND 2007 PRIUS AND HAVE EXPERIENCED TWO PROBLEMS WITH BOTH VEHICLES THAT ARE A SAFETY CONCERN, ALTHOUGH NO ACCIDENT HAS RESULTED FROM THESE PROBLEMS. 1) IN SNOWY CONDITIONS, WHEN TRAVELING UP AN INCLINE, THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM CAN TURN OFF POWER TO BOTH DRIVE WHEELS WITH THE RESULT THAT THE CAR CAN NOT MAKE IT UP THE HILL. GRANTED THIS CAN HAPPEN EVEN TO A MORE CONVENTIONAL CAR, BUT THE PRIUS DOES THIS UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN OTHER CARS HAVE NO PROBLEM NEGOTIATING THE HILL. THE OWNERS MANUAL CLAIMS THAT THIS IS TO PROTECT THE ELECTRIC ENGINE, HOWEVER, IT SEEMS THAT THERE SHOULD BE AN OVERRIDE OF SOME SORT THAT ALLOWS THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION MOTOR TO TURN THE WHEELS WHEN TRACTION IS POOR. THIS SYSTEM HAS ALSO LED TO CIRCUMSTANCES IN PARKING LOTS DURING SNOW, WHERE IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE THE CAR EVEN THOUGH OTHER CONVENTIONAL CARS ARE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE THE SNOW WITHOUT A PROBLEM. 2) IN CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE THE PRIUS MUST MERGE QUICKLY INTO TRAFFIC FOR INSTANCE WHEN TURNING INTO BUSY TRAFFIC AT AN INTERSECTION, IF YOU FLOOR THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR INITIAL ACCELERATES, BUT THEN THE ACCELERATION FADES DRAMATICALLY, BEFORE IT RESURGES. FINALLY THE DRIVER FOUND A PARALLEL PARKING PLACE TO SLIDE INTO AND WERE ABLE TO PUNCH THE BUTTON AND TURN OFF THE CAR. THE DRIVER HAVING THE CAR IN PARK TURNED THE CAR ON AGAIN . THE MOTOR WAS STILL IN FULL THROTTLE. THE DRIVER LEFT THE CAR TO FIND A RESTROOM. I STAYED IN THE CAR WITH THE ENGINE OFF. I REACHED DOWN TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND WITH LIGHT PRESSURE PULLED THE PEDAL UP. WHEN THE DRIVER RETURNED AND STARTED THE MOTOR IT WAS AT NORMAL SPEED. I HAVE A 2007 PRIUS THE FOLLOWING HAS OCCURRED ANY TIME DRIVING OVER ROUGH PATCHES OF ROAD OR OVER RR TRACKS: THE CAR LOSES TRACTION AND POWER FOR A SORT TIME UNTIL SMOOTH PAVEMENT RETURNS. THE VSC LAMP ON THE DASH SHOWS UP WHEN THIS HAPPENS. I SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT WOULD OCCUR ON A ROUGH MOUNTAIN ROAD OR IN WET WEATHER. ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2009 AT ABOUT 4:15 PM, I HAD A SUDDEN ACCELERATION INCIDENT WITH MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. I HAD NOT HAD ANY PRIOR DIFFICULTY WITH THIS VEHICLE IN THE APPROXIMATELY 34,000 MILES I HAD DRIVEN SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW. HOWEVER AT THIS TIME WHEN I TRIED TO BACK THE CAR ABOUT 50 FEET BACKWARDS INTO A MOTEL PARKING SPOT (ACTUALLY THERE WERE 3 OPEN SPOTS IN A ROW), IT RESPONDED VERY ABNORMALLY. I STARTED THE CAR, PUT IT IN REVERSE AND GENTLY APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL. INSTEAD OF CREEPING BACKWARDS AT ~5 MPH AS I HAD INTENDED, THE CAR "TOOK OFF" AT ABOUT 30-40 MPH. I STOMPED ON THE BRAKES WITH BOTH FEET AND INITIALLY DIDN'T SLOW DOWN. I FELT AN IMPACT AS MY CAR GRAZED A PARKED VEHICLE. MY CAR JUMPED OVER THE CURB AT THE PARKING LOT EDGE, PASSED OVER SOME SHORT BUSHES AND ENTERED A CULVERT. SOMEHOW I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE CAR AND IT CARVED A 180 DEGREE CURVE AND CAME TO A HALT ABOUT 75 FEET AFTER IT PASSED INTO THE CULVERT. FORTUNATELY I DID MAKE THIS SHARP TURN SINCE THERE IS A 4 LANE HIGHWAY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CULVERT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND ONLY SLIGHT DAMAGE TO THE OTHER CAR, BUT AN ESTIMATED $7000 OF BODY DAMAGE TO MY CAR. THE POLICE WERE CALLED AS WELL MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THE OWNER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE WAS LOCATED. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. SINCE THAT TIME, THE LOCAL TOYOTA REGIONAL OFFICE SENT OUT A REPRESENTATIVE WHO INSPECTED MY CAR AND "DURING A ROAD TEST NO ABNORMAL BRAKING OR ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WERE FOUND." I HAVE SINCE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH TOYOTA USA IN TORRANCE , CA. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH A "CASE REPRESENTATIVE" WHO HAS NOT BEEN HELPFUL. FINALLY AFTER 5 OR 6 PHONE CALLS, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE ADDRESS OF THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT. I WROTE THEM A LETTER ON JANUARY 20 AND HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM THEM. I ALSO CALLED AND LEFT MESSAGES ON FEBRUARY 2 AND 4. AS A PHYSICIAN INTERESTED IN PUBLIC HEALTH I DON'T WANT MY FAMILY OR ANYONE ELSE TO DRIVE THIS CAR. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO DIAGNOSTIC CODES INDICATING THAT THERE WAS A FAILURE AND THAT THE FLOOR MATS MAY HAVE CAUSED THE FAILURE. SHE WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE COMPUTER WAS SET TO THE DRIVING HABITS OF THE DRIVER AND HER INCONSISTENT DRIVING BEHAVIOR "CONFUSED" THE COMPUTER. THE FAILURE PREVIOUSLY OCCURRED IN 2007. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 425.

UNEXPLAINED SPONTANEOUS ACCELERATION IN 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. IN MID-MAY OF LAST YEAR I WAS DRIVING ALONE ON THE HOLLYWOOD FREEWAY IN APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH TRAFFIC. SUDDENLY THE CAR ACCELERATED DRAMATICALLY, AS IF I HAD PUNCHED THE ACCELERATOR, OR THE CRUISE CONTROL SUDDENLY KICKED IN BUT AT FULL SPEED (THE CRUISE WAS NOT ON). I WAS SHOCKED AND SCARED, AND I HIT THEBRAKES, NOTHING HAPPENED, AND THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING. I THOUGHT ABOUT THE MAT AND HOOKED MY FOOT AROUND THE PEDAL TO SEE BUT THE PEDAL WAS UP. I KEPT HITTING THE BRAKES AGAIN, AND ALSO PUMPED THE ACCELERATOR TO MAKE SURE IT WASN'T STUCK AND THEN THE CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING. THE WHOLE THING LASTED LESS THAN 10 SECONDS, BUT WAS PRETTY SCARY AS I GOT PRETTY CLOSE TO TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME. IT IMMEDIATELY OCCURRED TO ME THAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE MAT AS THAT HAD HAPPENED IN ANOTHER CAR, BUT THE MAT WAS CLIPPED TO THE FLOOR, AND WAS NOT IN ANY WAY INTERFERING WITH THE GAS PEDAL. ALSO, BEAR IN MIND, AS I'M WRITING ABOUT THIS IT SOUNDS AS IF I WAS ANALYTICAL AND METHODICAL, BUT ACTUALLY I WAS PRETTY FRANTIC AND MY FEET WERE FLYING ON THE PEDALS.... I TOLD MY PARTNER MARK ABOUT IT, TOLD HIM TO WATCH OUT FOR IT, BUT THEN IN JUNE WE BOUGHT ANOTHER CAR AND MARK PRIMARILY DROVE THE PRIUS AFTER THAT. I THEN I FORGOT ABOUT IT, AS I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST AN ANOMALY AND BASED ON WHAT WE PAID FOR THE CAR AND TOYOTA'S REPUTATION FOR SAFETY. I HAD NOT HEARD OF ANY ACCELERATION ISSUES AT THE TIME, AND IN FACT DIDN'T UNTIL MUCH LATER AFTER THE CHP OFFICER'S CRASH IN THE LEXUS. ON 11/29/09 IN THE AFTERNOON AS I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SLOT IN A TRADER JOE'S PARKING LOT, MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD OVER A CURB, ACROSS A CROSSWALK AND CAME TO REST AGAINST A TREE. SPACE COVERED BY THE CAR FROM ACCELERATION TO THE TREE WAS ABOUT 20-25 FEET. WITNESSES ATTEST THAT I WAS USING MY BRAKE AS THEY SAW THE LIGHTS. I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO ATTEMPT TO SHIFT THE CAR TO "NEUTRAL." THE FLOORMATS WERE NOT INTERFERING WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL (I HAVE PICTURES) AND THE FLOOR MATS WERE HOOKED DOWN. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS HURT INCLUDING ME. THERE WAS SLIGHT DAMAGE TO THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE BUMPER OF AN EMPTY CAR PARKED FACING ME. THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF MY PRIUS. AS I STATED, THERE WERE TWO WITNESSES WHO GAVE ME THEIR CONTACT INFORMATION AND SAID THEY WOULD BE WILLING TO TESTIFY FOR ME IF NECESSARY. THERE WAS A TRADER JOE WORKER WHO CALLED A TOW TRUCK. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE WITH THE MINIMAL DAMAGE WAS QUITE UPSET AND CALLED THE POLICE WHO CAME AND WROTE A REPORT. MY CAR HAS NEVER SUDDENLY ACCELERATED BEFORE - THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO HOOMAN TOYOTA IN LONG BEACH. IN RESPONSE TO MY COMPLAINTS TO TOYOTA, A REGIONAL TEAM WAS SENT TO EVALUATE THE ACCELERATOR MECHANISM. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY BEING REPAIRED HOWEVER TOYOTA HAS NOT BEEN IN TOUCH WITH ME TO TELL ME THEIR FINDINGS. TOYOTA'S BEHAVIOR TO MY COMPLAINTS OF SAFETY ISSUES HAS BEEN TO TELL ME THAT THE ONLY PROBLEM THEY HAVE IS FLOORMATS AND THAT MY PROBLEM HAS NEVER BEEN REPORTED BEFORE. THEIR IMPLICATION IS THAT I WAS AT ERROR. MY INSURANCE COMPANY STATE FARM INITIALLY HELD ME RESPONSIBLE FOR NOT CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE. WHEN I REFUSED THIS DECISION, SF DID MORE RESEARCH AND CHANGED THEIR RULING TO FIND FAULT WITH TOYOTA AND WILL TRY TO GET REIMBURSED FOR REPAIR COSTS AND MY DEDUCTIBLE. I BOUGHT A 2007 PRIUS FROM COPELAND TOYOTA-SCION DEALERSHIP. FROM THE BEGINNING, I NOTICED THAT IT ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN DURING THE DRIVE. FOR EXAMPLE, WHILE GOING AT 55 MPH, SUDDENLY, IT TRAVELS AT A HIGHER SPEED WITHOUT MY INTERVENTION. INITIALLY, I DID NOT PAY ATTENTION TO IT, BUT I BROUGHT IT TO YOUR DEALERSHIP AND SPOKE ONE OF THEIR COUNSELORS NEARLY TWO YEARS AGO. I WAS TOLD THAT ONE OF YOUR TECHNICIANS WILL HAVE TO RIDE AND DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND SINCE IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY, THERE IS NO WAY ANYONE ONE CAN DETECT. FIRST, I NOTICED THIS PROBLEM IN DECEMBER 2006. SINCE THEN, IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING ONCE IN A WAY. THE AVERAGE FREQUENCY CAN BE 3-5 TIMES A MONTH, AND IT COULD BE MORE BASED ON THE HIGHWAY USAGE. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE RAMIFICATIONS UNTIL THE RECENT RECALL NOTICE. I WANTED TO SEND THIS INFORMATION IN SEPTEMBER WHEN THE RECALL ON FLOOR MATS WAS ANNOUNCED. I AM MORE AND MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THIS UNPREDICTABLE SPEEDING ON ITS OWN WHICH COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS AS IT HAPPENED WITH SEVERAL CRASHES REPORTED (TODAY, I SAW A NEWS SEGMENT ON THE NBC TV INVOLVING A PRIUS). A CREEPING FLOOR MAT CAN GET THE GAS PEDAL STUCK, BUT WOULD NOT CAUSE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. SUDDEN ACCELERATION MAY BE MORE SEVERE IN THE CASES OF CRASHES, WHILE MINE IS LESS SEVERE, AT LEAST THUS FAR. I WAS "T-BONED" ON MY DRIVERS' SIDE ON JULY 3, 2009 IN MY 2007 PRIUS. THE CAR HAD EXTENSIVE DAMAGE AND THE ELECTRIC MOTOR WAS DISMANTLED AND REPLACED (SAME ONE) AS PART OF THE REPAIR. AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT IT WAS FINE AND I AVERAGED ABOUT 48-52 MPG. IT WAS IN THE TOYOTA REPAIR SHOP FROM JULY 7TH THROUGH LATE AUGUST AND WASN'T RETURNED UNTIL MID-SEPTEMBER. I HAVE NOT BEEN DRIVING IT SINCE I LAST PICKED IT UP BECAUSE I DID NOT FEEL SAFE IT . THE PROBLEM WAS NEVER FOUND AND I WAS TOLD "...IF WE CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM, WE CAN'T FIX IT...IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, BRING IT BACK, IT'S UNDER WARRANTY." YESTERDAY (NOVEMBER 4, 2009) I HAD TO DRIVE IT TO WORK (DOWNTOWN) BECAUSE MY HUSBAND HAD OUR VAN AND I FOUND THAT IT IS STILL ACCELERATING IN ODD WAYS LIKE IT DID WHEN WE GOT IT BACK IN SEPTEMBER. WHILE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AT A LOW SPEED WHEN I WENT TO ACCELERATE TO A HIGHER SPEED (APPX. 50 MPH) IT WASN'T ACCELERATING PROPERLY, THEN SUDDENLY "KICKED INTO" ACCELERATION THEN I HAD TO SLOW IT DOWN WITH THE BRAKES. THE TOYOTA HYBRID ENGINE DISMANTLING MANUAL (I FOUND ONLINE WHEN I WAS TOLD TOYOTA COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM) ON PAGE 1 #1-5 SHOWS HOW THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE OPERATING. AS I'VE DESCRIBED SINCE AUGUST, THE DAY I FIRST PICKED IT UP, THIS IS NOT HOW IT'S FUNCTIONING. IN LIGHT OF THE NEWS YESTERDAY, THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION FOUND NO DEFECT EXISTS IN VEHICLES WITH PROPERLY INSTALLED FLOOR MATS. AND IN FACT, THE NHTSA SAID, TOYOTA VEHICLES HAVE A VERY SERIOUS DEFECT. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT TOYOTA CAN DO NOW TO GET MY PRIUS WORKING PROPERLY (OR CONSIDER IT TOTALED) BEFORE I (OR MY FAMILY) ARE IN A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT LIKE THE 16 PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY DIED OR THE 200+ WHO HAVE HAD SERIOUS ACCIDENTS AS A RESULT OF THIS ISSUE! MY TOYOTA PRIUS ACCELERATED AT EXTREMELY HIGH SPEED AS I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY. I CRASHED THROUGH THE GARAGE DOOR INTO THE BOXES AND FURNITURE STORED IN THE GARAGE. I SUSPECT THE CURRENT TOYOTA RECALL IS MORE THAN A FLOOR MAT MALFUNCTION. I OWN AN '07 PRIUS. NINETY PERCENT OF THE TIME THE CAR SHUTS DOWN IMMEDIATELY UPON "FIRMLY & BRIEFLY" DEPRESSING THE POWER BUTTON, PRECISELY AS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. HOWEVER, ABOUT 10% OF THE TIME IT DOES NOT SHUT DOWN ON THE FIRST PUSH, AND WILL MOVE FORWARD WHEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE. I HAVE TO PUSH THE POWER BUTTON A SECOND TIME TO STOP THE ENGINE. THE DEALER ACTUALLY TOLD ME I SHOULD PUSH THE "PARK" BUTTON BEFORE PUSHING THE POWER BUTTON TO TURN THE CAR OFF. IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT DOING THAT IN THE MANUAL. NOW THEY'RE SAYING YOU SHOULD HOLD THE POWER BUTTON 3 SECONDS TO TURN OFF THE CAR? THE MANUAL SAYS (P. 141 AND ELSEWHERE) "THE HYBRID SYSTEM WILL START AND STOP BY FIRMLY PRESSING THE "POWER" SWITCH BRIEFLY WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED." THREE SECONDS IS CERTAINLY MORE THAN "BRIEFLY," AND MORE THAN IT TAKES TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE 90% OF THE TIME. FORTUNATELY, I HAVEN'T HIT ANYONE OR ANYTHING, I'VE GOTTEN USED TO IT, AND I'M CAREFUL TO BE SURE THE ENGINE HAS ACTUALLY STOPPED BEFORE I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE. ONCE IN A WHILE, I HAVE TO PUSH THE POWER BUTTON A SECOND TIME, AN INCONVENIENCE HARDLY WORTH MENTIONING. HOWEVER, I'M NOW CONCERNED THAT THE MINOR PROBLEM I'M EXPERIENCING COULD PROGRESS INTO SOMETHING MUCH MORE DANGEROUS. AT 4:45 PM ON 2/5/2009 , I DROVE MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS WEST ON SW ANDOVER ST. IN SEATTLE WA. I SLOWED AS I MADE A RIGHT TURN TO PARK PERPENDICULAR TO THE STREET WITH A 6 FOOT HIGH CHAIN-LINK FENCE IN FRONT OF ME ON TOP OF A RETAINING WALL. THE BOTTOM OF THE WALL IS 6 FEET BELOW STREET LEVEL ON A PAVED PARKING AREA. AS THE PRIUS APPROACHED THE FENCE, I BRAKED TO STOP, BUT THE CAR DID NOT SLOW ,SO I FLOORED THE BRAKE. THE CAR HIT A FENCE POST, PULLING IT OUT OF ITS MOUNT AND THEN THE CAR MOVED OVER THE TOP OF THE WALL PUSHING THE POLE AND FENCE OVER ITS HOOD & ROOF,. THE FRONT OF THE PRIUS DROPPED TO THE AREA BELOW THE WALL WHILE THE REAR REMAINED ON THE TOP. THE FENCE MESH STRETCHED BUT SLOWED THE PRIUS'S FORWARD MOVEMENT AND KEPT THE REAR FROM GOING OVER THE WALL.. THE DASHBOARD WAS STILL LIT AND I LOWERED THE ELECTRICAL WINDOWS AND YELLED FOR HELP. THE FIRST ARRIVAL TOLD ME TO "TURN OFF THE CAR". THIS IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE THE ONLY WAY HE COULD HAVE KNOWN THE CAR WAS RUNNING WAS IF HE HEARD THE SOUND OF THE PRIUS'S GASOLINE ENGINE THAT ONLY KICKS IN AT HIGHER SPEEDS. I OPENED THE DOOR AND JUMPED DOWN TO THE PAVEMENT. THE POLICE CAME AND MADE A REPORT. I DID NOT RECEIVE A CITATION. THE PRIUS WAS EXTRACTED BY A TOW COMPANY AND HAULED AWAY. FORTUNATELY I RECEIVED NO PHYSICAL INJURY. THE CHAIN LINK FENCE WAS TRULY A SAFETY NET. ON 2./12/ 2009, MY INSURANCE COMPANY , USAA, DECLARED MY PRIUS "TOTALED" AND MADE A SETTLEMENT PAYMENT. I THOUGHT PERHAPS MY BRAKES HAD FAILED. I HAD MY PRIUS RECEIVE A ROUTINE 25,000 MILE CHECK AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP JUST EIGHT DAYS BEFORE THE ACCIDENT.
