It is a known problem that Priuses manufactured from 2004 to 2015 have issues with the brake master cylinder and brake booster accumulator. When the vehicle computer recognizes an internal leak (ABS C1391) or other issue in the accumulator pump, it completely disables the regenerative braking system, which significantly reduces braking power. In my case, the problem is intermittent, and the vehicle computer will occasionally clear the code and operate normally. A slight whirring sound can still be heard (indicative of an internal leak), leading me to conclude that the part is still damaged, even when the code clears itself. This continues to affect my and my passengers' safety because the problem comes back with no warning while driving. Many times at highway speeds, the regenerative braking system will shut off while decelerating. This has caused scares and near-accidents. Imagine you are approaching stopped traffic while traveling 65 miles per hour. You press the brake to start slowing down, and while decelerating, the dashboard lights up and the brake pedal goes spongey. Now, you must slam the brake all the way into the firewall to engage the disks and pads exclusively. Aside from the imminent terror of hitting the car in front of you, now you are skidding on the brakes, worried the car behind you will crush the rear. Sooner or later this will cause somebody to get into an accident when a split-second decision cannot to be made quickly enough. The issue is well-known, and a warranty recall was issued, but it does not cover any vehicles over a certain age and mileage. It has been reproduced by my local mechanic and inspected by a Prius specialist, who both quote about $3800 to fully replace and recalibrate the failing parts. There were no indicators of this issue before it happened to my wife and I the first time on the highway. While I am grateful that nobody was injured, the situation could be completely different had the problem occurred just seconds later.
Toyota issued a recall with a limited time for Prius brake booster/actuator failures. This issue is known to present brake failures and necessarily place drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk in the case of such brake failures. Toyota made no effort to proactively remedy this problem and further neglected customer safety by excluding Priuses with the same manufacturing issue from the recall, under its 10 year 150,000 mile requirement. Whether or not the Priuses have been driven 150,000 miles or 10 years the nature with which the malfunction presents represents a safety for any driver.
The ABS Pump( Accumulator and booster) are regularly failing on all Toyota Prius( 2010-2015). When the ABS pump starts to fail, the warning lights for Traction control, Brake and ABS come on. These lights come on at all speeds and its very hard to bring the vehicle to a complete stop when this happens. The brakes completely stop working and the brakes become rock solid. The brakes become so hard that they can’t be possibly be depressed to stop in time. I nearly missed getting killed from this as I am out of country and Toyota is refusing to fix it since its not a recall and I am in Canada. Toyota is asking $3500 in parts and $1500 in labor to repair. I can not afford it and this issue is on all Prius from 2010-2015. This is a major safety hazard and can cause serious injury and damage. Toyota is refusing to repair it since they believe the cars are out of warranty. However Toyota has been notified about this safety hazard arising on all Prius(2010-2015) but decline to respond or take action. I urge NHTSA to take action and get this resolved as the ABS brakes failing on the Prius can be really dangerous and can cause life threatening accidents.
Passenger side low beam headlamp has continued to need to be replaced. I was not made aware of a "customer service protection program" on this and when I contacted Toyota they said it was too late for the repair, electrical harness, to be covered by their extended warranty. I never received information regarding the extended warranty. They stated they sent it to the correct address. But just because you mail something doesn't always mean it is delivered to that address. Also, I had my car serviced many times at Toyota dealerships and they never informed me of this extended warranty. If I had been made aware of the extended warranty I would've had it repaired in a timely manner. I have spoken to two representatives of Toyota and they stated they could not help me. I'm wondering why this is not considered a recall issue as it does affect the safety of driving a vehicle and the lights stop working. This may not be the right place to ask this question but I'm hoping someone in your organization can help me.
see all over the internet that 2010 Prius have a recall for Inverter. I called the dealer they said no recall with my vin. I was told that a new inver is almost $5000 dollars. i NEED HELP i HAVE BOUGHT 3 TOYOTA ALREADY. Total malfunction at highway speeds. Very unsafe, the car completely shut off. This may have resulted in a highway fatality due to collision as the vehicle was in the fast lane. NTSA please do your due diligence and investigate the faulty, defective HYBRID system as I believe the faulty inverter recall is much more larger than the original recall
My 2010 Toyota Prius hatchback suddenly had 4 or 5 warning lights appear on the dashboard and my brakes failed to function properly. It felt like the power brakes was turned off ! Although I did get the vehicle stopped, it surely was a dangerous situation. I understand that Toyota knows about this problem, and have read that it was warranted if this happened before 150,000 miles. My Prius has approx 167,000 miles right now and to replace the Brake Actuator, the cost will be $ 3 - 5 thousand dollars…absurd amount in my opinion. Since this critical feature (brakes) has a long known history of being faulty on Toyota vehicles it should be warranted for at least 25 years and at least 300k ! My Prius is “unsafe to drive” and is nothing more than a paperweight…I repeat, Toyota knows, and has known about this defective brake actuator problem for years and years!!! Please lean on Toyota to up the warranty of this faulty brake problem for the MANY, MANY Toyota owners who have purchased the Toyota product and and NOT screwing the public like they are doing now !
Hi I want submit issues with the master cylinder and abs pump assy I have 2 vehicles same model with average same mileage and both had issues with this system if I drove any distance below 25 mph in a constant time the dash lights comes on traction control, abs light, brake light , and the brake pedal goes low and barely brakes make this situation dangerous when I stop if you try turn it off the engine and on again lights stay there but if I reset the codes the pump works again for some while and then again when you don’t expected lose pressure and I am really afraid for my safety and my family, and I am not the only one with this problem is too many Prius owners who have the issues I went from dealer and they advice $3000 dlls fix situation who motivate people to lose money for $1200 in parts and $1800 dlls in labor for something they can resolve it because in reality is an manufactured defect
Purchased new a 2010 Toyota Prius third generation level 4 in July of 2009. Hybrid battery pack failed just after 150,000 warranty lapsed at 155,000 miles. January 2023 floods in Merced, CA damaged one of blocks in Hybrid battery pack driving through waters at 191000 miles on odometer. This threw DTC POA 080 'Check Hybrid System' message. The following month February 2023 at 191500 miles I notice loud cooling fan for hybrid battery operating for the first time ever! Fan is located in rear seat behind front passenger. Air vent is clearly visible. I believe defective fan led to overheating of hybrid battery premature failure at 155,000 miles.
Car slows down to a stop when driving on the freeway. With no power to accelerate, it makes it hard to get to the side of the road to be towed. Been to the dealer twice to address the problem, and was told that if I don't pay $200, that there is nothing they can do. Then when I did pay the money for evaluation, they told me the problem could be one of several things that would start the never-ending process of repairs that will keep me paying until they solve it. I would think that with a $200 code reading, that the dealers software could narrow it down to the exact repair needed. I mentioned to the dealer about the JOV update I had done earlier to the car, but dealer refuses to recognize that there is a recall on my vehicle, and that I needed to pay money(that I don't have) to do anything. I was driving home from work when all the warning light all came on at once. The car suddenly stopped accelerating and the “check hybrid system” was showing on my dash. I was lucky enough to be going down hill so I can make it to a shoulder to get off the road. Tried troubleshooting everything but to no avail and needed to get towed because the Prius would not move at all. Haven’t got the vehicle checked yet because the vehicle will not move and can only be moved if towed.
I had just gotten back in my car from a quick store trip. My prius turned on like normal but soon after when I was driving different kind of warning lights turned on. My steering was affected ,the car slowed down considerably to the point I was almost rear-ended. The triangle of death, check engine, brake and steering lights all came on with the check hybrid system warning. Before this i had no prior issues with my car. I had it checked by an independent mechanic who states it is the inverter that caused this
Hello there, my name is Lashyrah and I do not know much about cars so most of this is unknown. The person I bought my vehicle from did not give me much information and I was desperate at the time so I bought it. Most of the lights on the dashboard are on: ABS, Brake system, Engine, Tire/Safety Alert, Fuel pump reset warning, and Stability control are lights that come and go. I have used the code system to try to reset these things and they go away then pop back up. Sometimes while I am driving, all the dashboard lights disappear and the breaks start getting really touchy and it feels completely different driving until the previous lights all come back on. This has been an issue before and when I last went to Toyota to get my car serviced, I asked them to check the lights and system, and if they could do a multi-point inspection. They wanted me to pay $300 just to find out why the lights keep coming back on. Please help me get this fixed at no cost I am a single mom and college student working part time so I need my car to get around or a free loaner car to get around until this is fixed. I strongly feel these are recalls that did not get taken care of or are not showing up in the recall system. I need assistance as soon as possible and would like to know my options, especially after getting a notice in the mail a few days ago from Toyota about my car possibly being affected. My fuel gauge is also empty at around 3 bars or sometimes 2 bars instead of going all the way down to empty, costing me more money on gas having to fill it up more often. 2010 Prius started up in the garage 3 hours after being shut down. I am certain the car was NOT still running while we unloaded groceries from hatchback and left the garage. * Nothing was retrieved from the front seat so no accidental start could have occurred. * My son "heard it start" almost 3 hours after the vehicle had been shut off while in another room near the garage. * I heard nothing from the upstairs. * The Prius key fob was nowhere near the vicinity of the vehicle at the time it started nor was any person. In fact, both key fobs were upstairs and only the currently used 1 had a battery and was stored inside a tin so as to always know where it was. *Toyota executives were made aware of incident but essentially denied the Toyota could start without the key fob: "Toyota is not aware for any possible way for the vehicle to be started without the key."
The ABS, Brake, and traction control light came on. The braking became difficult. The car did stop but if it was in an emergency circumstance there may have been a collision. I called Toyota about the issue and was informed that there was a brake actuater and master cylinder issues with this make and model. Toyota replaced them in cars that had this issue under a special warranty that was over in 2021. It is a $3500 issue. I purchased this car new and have never received a notice about bad braking system. I have lived at the same address since the purchase. Toyota informed me that notices were not sent out, however if the owner came in with this issue before 2021 it would have been repaired and replaced. I can not understand how ALL owners were not informed. I do not understand how a recall wasn't enforced. I live in Florida where the speed limit is 70mph. This could have been deadly. I looked on forums online and apparently this has been an issue for many many 2010 Toyota Prius. I have a case in with Toyota American. 220701001489. I can use any help I can get with this issue. Hi- I have a Toyota Prius 2010 model and I encountered a braking failure yesterday. My ABS lights, brake lights and another light came up on my dashboard of the car. Upon diagnosis, I was informed by Toyota dealership that my car has a faulty C1391 - Abnormal leak in accumulator. This condition may be caused by small internal brake fluid leak inside the brake booster assembly with master cylinder. This is a known issue by Toyota and lots of press coverage on this issue since the past few years. I was told today that if this issue occurred within 10 year or purchase or <150K then the repair work would be covered by Toyota. I purchased the car in 2010 and I past the 10 year mark but mileage coverage is 125K (<150K). Toyota is unwilling to bear the cost and would want me to pay for the fix. This is a known issue with Toyota and the braking system can fail anytime before/or after 10 year mark. It is now costing me $3000 to repair. I am shocked with the Toyota's response in this matter. Hazard lights flashing, flashes faster at higher speeds. Hazard button useless. Mechanic not sure what is the problem; reset codes. Problem went away for a few days and then came back.
I was driving on the road and right before a stop light my car jumped as if someone hit me from behind. After looking in my rear view and seeing no one on me I realized something else happened. I look at my dash and check hybrid system light was on. I was in traffic at the light waiting and looked it up on my phone to find out what to do. Some article said to pull over and turn it off and restart it. The light turned green and traffic started moving so I started to drive. I thought I could probably make it home but the car started driving a lot slower than usual. I really didn’t want to pull over because it was in a bad part of town but I felt like I had no choice because the car was barely moving. It seemed more dangerous to be on the road with other drivers. So I pulled over and parked and tried starting it again. It wouldn’t shift to drive so now I’m stuck and can’t get home unless I pay to get my car towed. I get my car towed to the house. I put a meter on the battery and it was fine. I put a diagnostics tester on it and came up with these codes POA1A and POA94. I contacted hybrid mechanic that doesn’t work at Toyota and he said to take it in to a dealership and sent me the ZE3 warranty letter and said they would fix it. I paid for it to be towed to the dealership. There were already a lot of cars waiting to be serviced when I got there. Anyway, they said they would fix it after they did their diagnostics after I paid $120 for it. That was 3/21/2022. I sent CSR the ZE3 letter and he said it wasn’t covered. It’s like he didn’t even read it. A day later he said he needed to talk to a warranty administrator then a day later he said it would be covered but I don’t qualify for a loaner but they can give me a rental for $45 a day. I friend let me borrow their car for a couple days. Now as of writing this it’s midnight 3/30/2022. I still don’t have my car and I’m about to be without a car unless I buy one or rent one. No ETA on the part being delivered either. I’m SOL.
Brake Booster Failure; has been inspected and confirmed. Warning lamps for traction control, ABS, Brake System Lights, Master Warning Light all came on during normal city driving. Immediate loss of Brake Assist causing sudden need for much more distance while stopping the vehicle. Clearly, sudden changes in brake behavior is a safety concern and this problem seems to be well documented as common issue in this era of Toyota vehicles. I believe Toyota has fallen short in its efforts to remmedy the situation. An extended warranty was issued but it was for a brief period of time that required this problem to occur within a narrow window. It's a wildly expensive repair to a critical system and it seems to be a common problem in these cars.
Last week I check hybrid system message appeared on the screen and orange triangle with check engine light. I took it to the shop and they said that there are code P0A94 wich is related to the inverted and that is needed replacement. I saw that there was recall on inverter and want to see if I can get it replaced. Thanks
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving, the brake lights, ABS, and check engine warning lights illuminated. There was an abnormal noise detected. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and diagnosed that the brake booster assembly needed to be replaced. Additionally, the contact was informed that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000. The VIN was not available.

I have recently bought a 2010 Prius. The ABS (!) , traction control, and emergency brake light all illuminated three days after I transferred title with the dmv. This apparently is a very common problem with this car. I am told that these lights lead to a very expensive repair. My primary concern is my safety and of course the safety of others. A car that has brakes that suddenly fail is lethal. I was advised by a helpful agent that these repairs would come out of my pocket. My complaint is that Toyota should be responsible for this. I cannot drive this vehicle at the moment because I refuse to endanger anyone.
The dash lights on my 2010 Prius went all dark, lost all information on my dash. No lights on dash, no fuel gauge, no speedometer, nothing. This is very dangerous to suddenly have happened and I don't see a recall from Toyota to address this problem.
While driving on a highway at night around 60 mph, brake light turned on then AB light then slip light. Nothing else happened but since this hadn’t happened before, I pulled over, turned off car, waited a bit then turned back on. Car still worked although these lights stayed on. Continued driving to get home at reduced speed (around 45-50) plus with blinkers on with mental note to take to the dealer next morning. A few miles out, a loud unchanging alarm went off and I couldn’t use my brakes no matter how hard I pressed on them. I was able to glide off an exit that was near and making right turns get into a lot. Also neither of the brake pad nor the parking button was working so I couldn’t stop the car but then I hit power to shut down and that was able to stop it. Called for towing to dealer the following day. They say it’s the brake booster and that I have to pay out of pocket since it passed a recall but this is a dangerous issue with the car. If the light had been red and a car crossing, without brakes I would have gotten into an accident and since I bought it used last year, I wouldn’t have even known about this being an issue. There shouldn’t be a date limit on this recall, if models of Toyota Prius needs the recall and it hadn’t been done by previous owner, it needs to be done as this is a really traumatizing and potentially deadly issue.
The headlights on my car would get very dim and would burnout within 4 to 6 months. As time has past the time between bulb replacement would get shorter and shorter. At this point when I plug replacement bulbs into my car the burnout instantly. Without low beam headlights I am required to drive with my high beams on at all times. The dealer and the manufacture know about the problem and there was a notification regarding this issue with the headlights, but I was not sent this notice. Had I been sent the notice from Toyota I would have brought my car into the dealership for them to inspect the light problem. From what I have learned from Toyota is that there was never a recall on this issue. Headlights on a car I would think would be considered a major safety feature and should not have an expiration date on such a repair issue. The program to fix the issue was called Customer Support Program ZHB which allowed the dealers to correct the problem. How would anyone know that there was a problem unless they get a notification.
Check hybrid system light ignites, slows down vehicle in middle of high speed highway. First incident November of 2020 then several incidents after. Repair shops don't assure problem according to error codes & they recommend possibilities they cannot assure will resolve the problem. Car was taken into local dealership after receiving recall notice for software and airbags prior to November 2020 when the issue began. Software update took a couple of hours. Restart/reboot temporarily allowed driving again. Most recently the system entirely shut down & the car will not start or run. Abandoned car on side of the road and got heat exhaustion from walking the rest of the way home and had vehicle towed. Error lights come on including "check hybrid system" says "shift to P position when starting" and will not allow start.
My problem began when I pressed my brakes and instead it accelerated. I thought maybe my foot slipped and didn’t know what it meant. It happened again a few weeks later and then all of the dash lights went on that indicated that I had to have the big brake recall repair. Being that my car is past the 10 year warranty and past the extension for mileage, I had to pay out of pocket. This repair was done and upon receiving my car back, the gas mileage instantly began to drop. It went from averaging 42-48MPG in my town to 25-30MPG. I took it in the be looked at and they ensured me nothing was wrong with the car AT ALL. The battery wasn’t holding charge on top of this and it wasn’t reading the same on the dash about the 0-100 current gas mileage you’re getting as you go (the lines scale thing) that goes up when you let off the gas, and I could feel a strange shift while I was driving so I took it in again. They told me this time it’d be $110 to diagnose even though it was the same issue that started after the brake system repair, so I left extremely upset. A few days later my cars steering went out while I was driving and the whole hybrid system died. The car now only works in power mode. The consumer stated the car was taken in for a brake recall and had to pay $2800 in repairs. The consumer stated what they thought was a battery failure turned out to be the beginning of an electrical motor failure related to overheating.
I WAS JUST TOLD THAT MY 2010 PRIUS NEEDS THE BRAKE BOOST ASSEMBLY (CYLINDER AND BOOST) AT A COST OF $2,570. IT WAS CAUSING MY 4 MONTH OLD, 12V BATTERY TO DRAIN. I THOUGHT THAT WAS OUTRAGEOUS SO I LOOKED INTO IT AND FOUND OUT THERE WAS AN "ENHANCED EXTENDED" WARRANTY ISSUED (NOT A RECALL) , BUT FOR MY VEHICLE IT EXPIRED APRIL 2020. ANOTHER ISSUE THAT I UNCOVERED THAT THIS PART ALSO CAUSES THE PRIUS TO LURCH FORWARD WHEN BRAKING AND YOU HAPPEN TO DRIVE OVER A BUMP. TRAIN TRACKS, OR POTHOLES WHICH IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS WITH MY PRIUS. FORTUNATELY, I HAVE HAD NO ACCIDENTS SO FAR. I HAVE READ THAT THERE HAVE BEEN ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY THIS ISSUE. TOYOTA SHOULD STEP UP AND FIX THE PROBLEM BEFORE PEOPLE ARE INJURED DUE TO THIS DEFECTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM. MY DAUGHTER DRIVES A 2015 PRIUS. IS ANYTHING MORE BEING DONE? OR ARE THEY GOING TO WAIT UNTIL MORE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN? I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS ISSUE WHEN MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS 12V BATTERY REQUIRED FREQUENT JUMP STARTS. I REPLACED THE BATTERY ($300) DEC 2020. PRIOR TO THAT, I CALLED AAA AND GOT A JUMP START. BECAUSE OF COVID, I WASN'T DRIVING THE VEHICLE DAILY (WORK FROM HOME) SO IT WAS ASSUMED THE CAUSE WAS THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE DRIVEN FREQUENTLY.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRICAL, OIL, AND BREAK SYSTEMS EVER SINCE PURCHASING MY CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 2010 PRIUS FROM THE DEALERSHIP IN 2013. TOYOTA HAS NEVER PROVIDED A SATISFACTORY ANSWER FOR WHAT IS ACTUALLY WRONG WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; THE PROBLEM STILL REMAINS. TOYOTA ALSO DOES NOT HAVE AN IDEAL MAINTENANCE PLAN SET UP FOR THE KNOWN INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION RATE THAT IS DIRECTLY LINKED TO MY MODEL VEHICLE AND HAS NOT ONLY NOT PERFORMED ROUTINE OIL CHANGES BUT ALSO SENT ME HOME AFTER A SUPPOSED OIL CHANGE WITH ZERO OIL IN MY TANK. BUT TODAY MY MAIN CONCERN THAT I TAKE ISSUE WITH AND THAT IVE ENCOUNTERED FROM THE GET-GO, HAS TO DO WITH THE BREAKS. FOR YEARS I'VE BEEN TELLING TOYOTA ABOUT HOW MY BREAKS DO THIS THING WHERE UNDER THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES (THOSE BEING THINGS LIKE SLIGHT BUMPS OR RAISES IN THE ROAD, OR GOING OVER A MANHOLE COVER) THE BREAKS NOT ONLY GIVE OUT BUT ACTUALLY PROPEL ME FORWARD WITH ZERO CHANCE FOR STOPPING WHICH IS QUITE TERRIFYING ALREADY AND THEN WHEN YOU ADD IN OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD INTO THE EQUATION IS A LITERAL NIGHTMARE. DESPITE MY MANY EFFORTS FOR TOYOTA TO TAKE A LOOK AT THEM THEY ALWAYS REFUSE ANY SERVICE TO THEM BECAUSE MY DASHBOARD IS NOT DISPLAYING ANY WARNING SIGNS. ALSO, DUE TO THE FACT THAT ITS NOT A CONSTANT ISSUE, MEANING IT ONLY HAPPENS UNDER THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH IDK WHERE SUCH A PRECISE PLACE EXISTS NEAR THE DEALERSHIP, THEY CANT EXPERIENCE IT FOR THEMSELVES. SO MY CONCERNS ARE DISMISSED LEAVING ME TO FEND FOR MYSELF WHENEVER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES ARISE WHICH NO DOUBT AN ACCIDENT SEEMS TO BE ON THE HORIZON. THEN WITH ~114,700 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, MY ENTIRE ABS SYSTEM CRASHED WHILE I WAS IN TRAFFIC. I CALLED MY CAR INSURANCE AGENT ON 2:11PM TO TOW MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC. THEIR DIAGNOSIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE INVERTER/CONVERTER. MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED AGAIN TO THE TOYOTA DEALER BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM WAS IN RECALL.

MY PRIUS WAS RECALLED TO LIMIT CURRENT IN THE MAIN POWER INVERTER AS THEY ARE FAILING. THESE INVERTERS ARE STILL FAILING EVEN AFTER THE SOFTWARE MODIFICATION. TOYOTA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE INVERTER AS THEY KNOW IT COULD FAIL. I DON'T WANT TO BE STRANDED BEFORE THEY WILL ADDRESS THE PROBLEM!
MY BRAKES RECENTLY STOPPED WORKING AS THEY NORMALLY DO (YOU HAD TO PRESS EXTREMELY HARD ON THE PEDAL TO GET IT TO STOP) AND SEVERAL LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASHBOARD. PRIOR TO THIS THE CAR WAS MAKING A VERY STRANGE NOISE WHEN YOU START TO PUSH ON THE BRAKES. NOT LIKE A TYPICAL SQUEAKY BRAKE SOUND. I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA AND THEY GAVE ME A QUOTE FOR $3,700 STATING THAT I NEEDED A NEW BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY. I DISCOVERED A RECALL FOR 2010 PRIUS FOR THE EXACT DIAGNOSTIC CODE AND THEY SAID MY PRIUS WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. WHEN YOU "REBOOT" THE COMPUTER ON THE PRIUS, THE LIGHTS AND BRAKE PROBLEM GO AWAY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM WITH THE 2010 PRIUS FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ON-LINE AND TOYOTA IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING IT. IT'S ALSO A VERY COSTLY REPAIR THAT SEEMS TO BE EASILY FIXED WHEN YOU REBOOT THE COMPUTER ON THE CAR. WHAT IS GOING ON? HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE PAYING TOYOTA FOR THIS FIX THAT APPEARS TO BE A WIDE PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE THAT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING?

WHILE DRIVING OUR 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS II ON THE INTERSTATE WE BEGAN NOTICING A BURNING SMELL. THEN, THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. WE PULLED ONTO AN OFF RAMP AND AS WE SLOWED THE VEHICLE DOWN SMOKE BEGAN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. WE DROVE VERY SLOWLY DOWN THE ROAD AND THE SMOKE BECAME MORE PREVALENT. WE TURNED ON A SIDE STREET AND MY HUSBAND PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, GOT OUT, WALKED TO THE FRONT, AND NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER FRONT HEAD LAMP WAS MELTED AND THERE WAS A FLAME. WE QUICKLY GOT OUR FAMILY OUT OF THE CAR (2 KIDS IN CARSEATS IN THE BACK). WE MOVED AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND THE FLAMES BECOME LARGER AND LARGER. WE CALLED 911 AND THE HOOD WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES BY THE TIME THE FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. THEY WERE ABLE TO PUT THE FIRE OUT QUICKLY, SO IT DID NOT SPREAD INTO THE FRONT CABIN OR REAR OF THE VEHICLE. WE HAD NOT HAD ANY RECENT WORK DONE AND THE VEHICLE WAS FULLY OPERATIONAL UNTIL THE TIME OF THE FIRE. WE HAD NOT BEEN EXPERIENCING ANY PROBLEMS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT.

THE VEHICLE WAS HAVING ISSUE WITH THE STEERING LOCKED UP WHEN TURNING WITH MOTION ABOUT 20+MPH. THE HYBRID SYSTEM IS NOT AS ADVERTISED THE 50MPG IN ANY WAY AS IT ONLY GETS AVERAGE ABOUT 35MPG. THE VEHICLE HAS 87000 MILES AND THE OLD SYMPTOMS FROM SECOND GENERATION FOLLOWED SUIT WITH IT. THE DASH WENT TOTALLY OFF WHEN WEATHER IS COLD AND SUDDENLY TURNED BACK ON WHEN IT GETS WARM. I HAD DRIVEN A FEW MILES WITHOUT THE DASH ON AND IT WAS A BAD EXPERIENCE SINCE I CANNOT FIGURE OUT THE SPEED OR WHAT IS GOING ON. THE STEERING IS THE MAJOR ISSUE AS WE DARE NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR AND THE TECHNICIANS FROM THE DEALER SAID NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE BUT THIRD PARTY TECHNICIANS RECOMMEND TO TAKE TO TOYOTA FOR RECALL.U TURNS ARE THE WORSE THAT LOCKED THE STEERING AND THE CAR ALMOST COME TO A STOP WITH BEEPING ALARMS.

I HAD A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WITH A POPPING SOUND. THE FAILURE NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE I WAS TURNING INTO A TRAFFIC LANE. THIS LEFT ME STALLED IN THAT LANE OF TRAFFIC. TECHIE EXPLAINED THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE HAS ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MODULE AND THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. HE SAID I SHOULD INSTALL A NEW CABLE SPIRAL ASSEMBLY KIT (AKA "CLOCK SPRING"), PART # 8430747020 AT A COST OF NEARLY $1000, INCLUDING OVER $700 FOR THE PART. I DID SOME RESEARCH. PART # 8430747020 WAS INSTALLED IN MANY TOYOTA VEHICLES, AND HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN THE COROLLA, MATRIX, HIGHLANDER, TACOMA, RAV4, AND YARIS. SEE SAFETY RECALL E0M (E1M) APRIL 2015, UPDATE 5/12/14. THE PRIUS IS NOT MENTIONED IN THE RECALL, ALTHOUGH MY CAR HAS THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE IDENTICAL PART, AND THE TOYOTA SERVICE SUPERVISOR AGREES IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM AND PART. I EXPLAINED THIS TO THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN AND SUPERVISOR, WHO CALLED TOYOTA, AND TOYOTA OFFERED TO COVER 50% OF THE COST OF THE PART, AND NONE OF THE LABOR COST. I ASKED WHETHER THEY COULD DO THE SAME FIX IN MY CAR AS THEY DO ON THE RECALLED VEHICLES, NAMELY INSTALLING PART # 04004-07122, AND THEY DECLINED. SEE TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SAFETY RECALL E0M SPIRAL CABLE REPLACEMENT. TOYOTA SHOULD BE RECALLING MY CAR AND FIXING THIS PROBLEM AT THEIR EXPENSE, NOT JUST REDUCING THE COST OF THE PART. SECOND, THEY SHOULD NOT BE REPLACING THIS DEFECTIVE PART WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART. THEY SHOULD DO A FIX THAT WILL LAST. I ASSUME THE FIX THEY'VE DONE ON ALL OTHER VEHICLES, WITH PART # 04004-07122, WOULD WORK FOR MY PRIUS. THEY REFUSE. FYI- THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON AND OFF FOR YEARS, AND SEEN BY TOYOTA DURING THAT PERIOD. THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED MAY 1, 2017. THEY BELIEVE THE PREVIOUS AIRBAG WARNING LIGHTS WERE UNRELATED TO THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE.
I'VE HAD TWO TOYOTA PRIUS IN MY LIFETIME, A 2005 AND A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, BOTH HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WHERE THE ENGINE WOULD EAT UP ALL OF MY OIL, I WOULD HAVE AN OIL CHANGE DONE AND LESS THAN 2 WEEKS LATER I WOULD HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL GAUGE ROD AND FIND THAT THE OIL LEVELS WERE BELOW THE BOTTOM LINE, ALMOST EMPTY! THE ENGINE WOULD BE BURNING OIL AT SUCH AN ALARMING RATE THAT I WOULD REPEATEDLY BRING THE VEHICLE TO TOYOTA FOR OIL CHANGES. I'M VERY UNSATISFIED WITH MY TOYOTA PRIUSES. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY AT 166,384 MILES AND THE ENGINE CYLINDER HAS NOW GIVEN WAY AND ALSO THE HYBRID BATTERY. I'VE GONE ONLY TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS TO HAVE PRISTINE CONSECUTIVE SERVICE AND NO THIRD PARTY REPAIR FACILITIES HAVE PROVIDED SERVICE. I AM LOCATED IN SOUTHER CALIFORNIA IN SAN DIEGO. ONCE YOU REACH PAST THE 140,000 MILE MARK, YOUR CAR IS PRETTY MUCH DONE. CONSIDER BUYING A NEW ONE. TOYOTA PRIUSES AND THEIR ENGINEERS HAVE TO COME UP WITH A WAY TO SATISFY CURRENT AND FUTURE PRIUS OWNERS AS MANY OF US WILL FIND THAT THERE WILL BE MANY PROBLEMS AND ISSUES DOWN THE ROAD.

WE DID NOT FEEL SAFE AT ALL ON THE WAY HOME.ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2016, WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO BUTLER TOYOTA WHERE WE PURCHASED IT FOR A CHECKUP. AFTER THE DIAGNOSTIC, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ADVISED ME THAT THE COMBINATION METER WAS OUT COMPLETELY. THIS COMBINATION METER MUST BE REPLACED TO RESTORE THE READING ON THE DASH BOARD. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS UNIT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY, AND I MUST PAY $1,698.42 (TAX NOT INCLUDED) FOR THIS REPLACEMENT (SEE ATTACHED). THIS COMBINATION METER IS A CRITICAL SAFETY TOOL TO MONITOR THE DRIVING MECHANISMS, THE CONDITION OF VEHICLE, AND WHEN THE DRIVER SHOULD REFILL THEIR FUEL TANK. TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM, I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR CONSIDERATION OF THIS WORK AS A FAULTY PRODUCT AND SHOULD BE REPLACED WITHOUT COST TO THE CUSTOMER. ENCLOSED IS A COPY OF SERVICE FROM BUTLER TOYOTA.

TODAY WAS THE 6TH REPLACEMENT AND WE HAD IT DONE AT THE DEALERS WHERE WE WERE TOLD, AGAIN, THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE. SEVERAL TIMES, I HAVE HAD TO DRIVE HOME FROM WORK AT NIGHT IN THE DARK WITH NO LOW BEAMS (BOTH WENT OUT) AND USE MY HIGH BEAMS WHILE CARS HEADING TOWARD ME FLASHED THEIR LIGHTS BECAUSE OF THE BLINDING EFFECT OF USING HIGHBEAMS. CODE # C1391; THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE MASTER CYLINDER; AND BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY SAYING THERE IS AN ABNORMAL LEAK DOWN OF THE BRAKE ACCUMULATOR. THIS IS INSANE. I CANNOT AFFORD TO FIX IT AND MUST CONTINUE TO WORK TO LIVE; THEREFORE DRIVING ABOUT 200 MILES/DAY WITH HYDRAULIC ONLY BRAKES. ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE SLOWED, IT DID NOT COME TO A FULL STOP. I ENDED UP HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THANK GOD IT WAS A TRUCK AND AS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR FROM MOVING FURTHER OR I COULD OF ENDED UP IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. AFTER THE COLLISION, THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP ALTHOUGH THE PARK BUTTON WAS PRESSED AND LIGHT WAS ON. I EVEN TRIED TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE STAYED ON AND IN DRIVE. THE FACT THAT THIS CONTINUES TO HAPPEN (AND TO DIFFERENT DOORS) LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THERE IS A KNOWN DEFECT IN THE ELECTRONIC LOCK MECHANISM. I DO SEE A FEW OTHER COMPLAINS OF THE SAME ISSUE. THIS REPRESENTS A REAL SAFETY CONCERN AS THE AFFECTED DOOR REMAINS UNLOCKED WHILE DRIVING AND CAN BE OPENED WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION (SUCH AS BY A CHILD). I THINK IT'S THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE HEADLIGHT, ONLY MUCH WORSE. IF THERE WERE NOT MULTIPLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS AVAILABLE THE CAR COULD HAVE EASILY EXPLODED BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. I AM SCHEDULING REPAIRS, HOWEVER, THIS SEEMS TO BE A MAJOR DEFECT EITHER IN THE ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING OR POSSIBLY RELATED TO FUSE SHORTAGES. AFTER A FEW MORE MINUTES THE RED STEERING WHEEL LIGHT COMES ON ALONG WITH THE "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM" MESSAGE AND THE REST OF THE LIGHTS AND THE VEHICLES LOSES ALL POWER AND STOPS. IT WILL NORMALLY TURN BACK ON BUT THERE WAS ONE OCCASION WHERE IT DIDN'T AND MY HUSBAND HAD TO PUSH THE CAR TO A PARKING LOT. I TOOK THE CAR IN ON THE RECALL WHICH SHOULD COVER THIS BUT ALL THEY DID WAS UPDATE THE SOFTWARE AND BLAME THE ISSUE ON A CAR ACCIDENT. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE AS JUST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BUT IT SOUNDS TO ME THAT THEY COULD HAVE FIXED THE ISSUE UNDER THE RECALL.

IT MAKES A SCREECHING NOISE WITHOUT PERFORMANCE BEING EFFECTED. IT GOES AWAY USUALLY WITHIN A HALF AN HOUR. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING THING TOO FOR FEW YEARS BY NOW. THE OTHER ISSUE I HAD AS WELL AS OTHERS IS DIMMING OF LIGHTS THAT HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE LAST YEAR. WE NEEDED TO SWITCH THE LIGHTBULBS MORE FREQUENTLY THAN SEEMS NORMAL. DIDN'T EVEN THINK IT WAS OUT OF THE ORDINARY UNTIL I READ THE COMMENTS HERE ABOUT IT. THE OTHER PROBLEM I STARTED TO HAVE IS WITH A STEREO DISPLAY SYSTEM AND THE VOICE ACTIVATION FOR THE BLUETOOTH. THE DISPLAY HAD SOME WEIRD LINES ON IT AFTER A VERY COLD OR A VERY HOT DAY (RADIO WAS WORKING FINE JUST THE DISPLAY WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY). I PURCHASED A CERTIFIED USED 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS FROM THE EAST COASTS NUMBER ONE CERTIFIED USED TOYOTA DEALER. I WAS PRESENTED WITH PAPERS SHOWING ALL THE CHECKS PERFORMED WITH A CERTIFIED USED TOYOTA AND THAT THE VEHICLE I WAS PURCHASING HAD PASS ALL THE INSPECTIONS. I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE DURING THE DAY AND DID NOT USE THE HEADLIGHTS. ONCE I WAS HOME (OVER 3 HOURS AWAY) I USED THE HEADLIGHTS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. THE DRIVER'S SIDE LIGHTS WERE VERY DIM. I TOOK THE LOW BEAM BULB OUT AND NOTICE A LOT OF CORROSION ON THE BULB AND MOISTURE IN THE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY. I LET IT DRY OUT AND REPLACED BOTH THE DRIVERS AND PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM LIGHT BULBS. OVER THE SUMMER I NOTICED A FEW TIME MOISTURE WOULD BUILD UP BUT WOULD BE GONE WITHIN A FEW DAYS. NOW DURING THE WINTER THE MOISTURE HAS FROZEN INSIDE THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY AND IMPEDES ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE HEADLAMP. MY VISIBILITY IS REDUCED AND HAS NOW BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE NOT OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR A FULL YEAR YET AND EVEN PURCHASED THE TOP OF THE LINE EXTENDED TOYOTA WARRANTY. THE LOW BEAM BULB LAMP CAME LOOSE FROM ITS HOUSING - MELTING THE SOCKET, AND WHILE STILL "WORKING" DID NOT PROVIDE PROPER ILLUMINATION FOR NIGHT DRIVING AND PERHAPS POSED A FIRE HAZARD. UPON TAKING TO THE DEALER, THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE UNIT (FOR $720.08) AND HAVE ORDERED A RETROFIT BRACKET (IT IS ON BACK ORDER) THAT THEY WILL INSTALLED TO PREVENT RE-OCCURRENCE. SEEMS THERE IS A PROBLEM - THEY KNOW IT - BUT THE PUBLIC BARES THE COST AND POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROBLEM. IN THE PROCESS OF DOING THE ENGINE SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THE PRIUS RECALL, APPARENTLY THE TOYOTA DEALER TECHNICIAN FAILED TO ENGAGE THE HOOKS & TABS AT THE BACK OF THE FUSE BOX COVER, AND JUST "CLICKED" THE FRONT LATCH; THIS LEFT THE FUSE BOX COVER LOOSE AND EXPOSED TO WATER PENETRATION. THE LOOSE FUSE BOX COVER MIGHT PERMIT WATER TO ENTER THE FUSE BOX COMPARTMENT, CAUSING A SHORT. THE SHORT COULD SHUT-DOWN CAR ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS CAUSING A CATASTROPHIC SHUT-DOWN OF ENGINE, AIR BAGS, POWER BRAKES, ETC. THIS COULD EASILY RESULT IN LOSS OF LIFE, WHEN THE ENGINE STOPS AND SAFETY SYSTEMS (AIR BAGS) FAIL DUE TO THE SHORT; THIS SIMILAR TO THE GM IGNITION RECALL ISSUE. THE DEALER SAYS THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE THOUGH THE INVERTER IS BEING REPLACED UNDER AN EXISTING RECALL ISSUED LAST WEEK. I STARTED NOTICING A HIGH PITCH NOISE SPORADICALLY ON MY CAR AFTER IT WAS A FEW MONTHS OLD. IF I STOPPED AND RESTARTED THE CAR, THE NOISE WOULD GO AWAY. WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. IT WOULD HAPPEN ABOUT 1-3 TIMES PER MONTH AND SOME MONTHS NOT AT ALL. ON THIS PARTICULAR TRIP ABOUT A MONTH AGO, I DID NOT NOTICE THE NOISE ON START UP (I HAD A COLD THAT AFFECTED MY HEARING), BUT DID HEAR IT AFTER GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY. THERE WAS NO WHERE TO REASONABLY PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR SAFELY, SO I KEPT DRIVING. AFTER ABOUT 15-30 MINUTES THE SPEEDOMETER CLUSTER/DASH THAT DISPLAYS THE SPEED, FUEL AND DRIVE POSITION WENT BLANK AND THE NOISE WENT AWAY. SEARCHING ONLINE THERE WERE AT LEAST A HANDFUL OF OTHERS WHO EITHER HAD THEIR SPEEDOMETER REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY OR OTHERWISE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I ALSO FOUND A RECALL ON THE 2009, A YEAR EARLIER, PRIUS FOR THE SAME ISSUE AND YES THE SAME COMPANY MAKES THE PART. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE DEALER ASAP AND THE DEALER WANTED TO CHARGE ME $120 TO DIAGNOSE. WHEN I QUESTIONED THEM, THEY SAID THEY NEED TO TAKE THE DASH APART, WHICH IS A LIE AS THIS WOULD BE MORE EXPENSIVE AS PER OUR CONVERSATION. I ASKED FOR A QUICK COMPUTER DIAGNOSIS AND THEY REFUSED. I THEN CALLED TOYOTA WHO SAID MY CAR IS LONG OUT OF WARRANTY FOR THIS PART AND THAT BECAUSE I DIDN'T PAY FOR A DIAGNOSIS THEY WOULD NOT TAKE IT FURTHER. WHEN I PRESSED ON WITH THEM THEY HID BEHIND CONFIDENTIALITY WHEN I ASKED ABOUT OTHERS WHO HAD THIS ISSUE AND THEN THEY SAID EVEN IF I PAID FOR A DIAGNOSIS AND THIS WAS FOUND DEFECTIVE THERE ARE NO PROMISES. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND REPEATEDLY TRIED TO RESTART IT TO NO AVAIL. I CALLED FOR TOWING SERVICE AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY TOYOTA DEALER, WHERE THE SERVICE PEOPLE SAID IT WAS AN "INTERNAL FAILURE" AND REPLACED THE INVERTER ASSEMBLY. THE OTHERS AFFECTED BY THIS DEFECT SAID THAT HEAT CAUSES A MAGNET TO DETACH TAKING THE CAR FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL. I AM VERY THANKFUL THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE FREEWAY OR COULD HAVE CAUSED FATALITIES. TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED ANY VEHICLES OR MADE NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS. OUR PRIUS HAS APPROX. 44000 MILES ON IT, IS REGULARLY MAINTAINED AT THE DEALER, NOT MISTREATED IN ANY WAY AND GAVE NO ADVANCED WARNING INDICATION THAT THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ELECTRICAL/PROPULSION SYSTEM. THE CAR LOST ALMOST TOTAL POWER, LIMPED ABOUT 50 FEET PAST PARKED CARS AND JUST DIED AT THE CURB AFTER I PUT IT IN PARK. IT WOULD LIGHT UP ACROSS THE DASH, BUT NEVER START THE ENGINE. WE HAVE HAD THIS CAR ABOUT 36 MONTHS. AS THIS IS MY WIFE'S CAR, I AM GREATLY WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE CAR AND HAVING THIS PROBLEM HAPPENING AGAIN, ESPECIALLY TO HER AT HIGH SPEED, MULTI-LANE HIGHWAY DRIVING. WITH A TERRIBLE SMELL ELECTRICAL/FUEL. I IMMEDIATELY SHUT THE CAR OFF AND LET IT SIT. AFTER A FEW SECONDS I TRIED AGAIN WITH THE SAME RESULT. THE OWNERS MANUAL SAYS TO NOT DRIVE AND CONTACT TOYOTA DEALER IMMEDIATELY. WHEN THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED I AGAIN TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE AND THE WARNINGS WERE NOT PRESENT. THE DEALER INVESTIGATED AND SAID IT WAS OVER ETHANOL IN THE FUEL. THE FUEL HAS BEEN TESTED AND FOUND TO BE 6-8%, WHICH IS ACCEPTABLE. THE DEALER AT THE TIME OF THE REPAIR WANTED $450 TO DROP AND CLEAN THE TANK. INSTEAD I CHOSE TO GO WITH THE PHILLIPS TOYOTA (LEESBURG FLORIDA, PHONE 352-728-2030) DEALER SERVICE MANAGER, DAVID NEWTON TO THE CLOSEST GAS STATION AND FILL UP. SINCE THEN THERE HAS NOT BEEN A PROBLEM, BUT I AM CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY IN NOW DRIVING THE VEHICLE. SINCE THAT TIME, THE HEAD LIGHTS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM. EACH TIME THERE IS A PROBLEM, BOTH HEAD LIGHTS BURN OUT SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE FIRST TIME THE HEAD LIGHTS FAILED WAS AUGUST 7, 2012 WHEN THERE WERE FIVE OF US IN THE CAR DRIVING 15+ MILES WITH ABOUT A THIRD OF THE DRIVE ON MANY RESIDENTIAL STREETS THAT WERE NOT WELL LIT. THE DEALERSHIP IN FLORIDA WAS CALLED AND IT WAS EXPLAINED THAT BOTH HEADLIGHTS BURNED OUT AT THE SAME TIME AND THAT IT MUST BE SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE BULBS BECAUSE HEADLIGHTS DO NOT BURN OUT TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE QUOTED THAT THE COST OF THE REPAIR TO REPLACE THE HEAD LIGHTS WAS ABOUT $150. HE DID NOT ASK IF THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND HE DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT COULD BE SOMETHING IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. HE DID NOT SUGGEST THAT THE CAR BE BROUGHT IN TO HAVE THEM PUT IT ON DIAGNOSTIC MACHINES TO VERIFY WHERE THE PROBLEM MAY BE.WE OPTED TO REPLACE THE BULBS OURSELVES. THE SECOND TIME BOTH HEAD LIGHTS BURNED OUT SIMULTANEOUSLY WAS OCTOBER 21, 2012 AND WE AGAIN, REPLACED THE BULBS OURSELVES. THE COST OF THE BULBS INCLUDING TAX IS $54.36. SECOND OCCURRENCE OF THIS PROBLEM IN THREE WEEKS. DRIVING DOWNHILL ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AT 25 MPH, SLOWING TO A STOP WITHOUT APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR. SUDDENLY LOST ENGINE POWER. APPLIED ACCELERATOR, NO RESPONSE. CONTINUED TO LOSE SPEED AS I ROLLED SILENTLY DOWNHILL TOWARD THE INTERSECTION. APPLIED BRAKES AND STOPPED. RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND IT STARTED UP FINE. THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT ALSO OCCURRED ON A DOWNHILL GRADE, ON AN EXIT RAMP FROM AN PARKING GARAGE. FORTUNATELY BOTH INCIDENTS HAPPENED AT LOW SPEED AND NOT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. MY CAR NEVER FAILED AGAIN. ABOUT 6 MONTHS LATER AMC CAME OUT WITH A DIRECTIVE TO REPLACE THE SMALL WIRING HARNESS ON ALL OF THESE CARS. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE TWO ENDS OF THE HARNESS WERE MANUFACTURED BY DIFFERENT COMPANIES THAT USED DIFFERENT PLASTIC.THE PLASTIC IN THE CONNECTORS WOULD REACT WITH ONE ANOTHER AND PRODUCE A GAS. THE GAS WOULD COAT THE CONTACTS AND CAUSE THEM TO GO OPEN. IN MY CASE WHEN I RESTARTED MY CAR THE CONTACTS WOULD ARC AND IT WOULD RUN OKAY UNTIL THE CONTACTS GOT COATED AGAIN. THEN CAME BACK AND SAID THEY HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED SO IT WOULD BE OUT OF MY POCKET. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I COULD JUST CONTINUE TO TURN THE LIGHTS ON AND OFF WHEN IT HAPPENS BECAUSE THE LIFE OF THE BULBS SHOULD NOT BE UP YET. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR A WARRANTY REPAIR. THEY STATED "SOME TYPE OF FLUID OR CLEANER HAS GOTTEN BEHIND THE CLUSTER AND SPOTTED. NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY." MY PRIVATE MECHANIC THINKS THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH THE EVAPORATOR BEHIND AND INTEGRATED WITH THE DASH - COUPLED WITH THE HEAT & HUMIDITY - WHICH MIGHT BE CAUSING THE BLOTTING OUT OF PORTIONS OF THE HYBRID SCREEN CLUSTER. FURTHER, HE TELLS ME THAT WHETHER OR NOT THIS CAN EFFECT THE SAFETY OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM AND THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, HE DOES NOT KNOW. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR A RECALL REPAIR ON MARCH 24, 2010. HOWEVER, HE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE LOSS OF BRAKE EFFECTIVENESS. THE CONSUMER PULLED INTO A NEIGHBOR'S DRIVEWAY AFTER DRIVING LESS THAN ONE MILE FROM HIS HOME. AFTER PUSHING THE PARK BUTTON, BUT BEFORE PUSHING THE POWER BUTTON, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RACE. IT WAS NOT AT AN EXTREME HIGH RPM AND IT WAS NOT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD TIME, BUT IT DID LAST FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE BEHAVIOR INDICATED A DEFECT IN THE SOFTWARE THAT CONTROLLED THE START-UP SEQUENCE. I OWN A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. SINCE PURCHASING IT IN AUGUST, I HAVE BEEN AWARE OF ODD, COMPLETELY REPRODUCIBLE BRAKING BEHAVIOR. I HAVE NOT REPORTED THE COMPLAINT UNTIL NOW BECAUSE I ASSUMED IT WAS SOMETHING NORMAL WITHIN THE OPERATION OF THE PRIUS, BUT WITH THE REPORT IN THE NEW YORK TIMES THAT JAPAN IS INVESTIGATING THE PRIUS BRAKING SYSTEM, I THOUGHT I SHOULD FILE A REPORT. I LIVE NEAR TRAIN TRACKS THAT HAVE A GRADE CROSSING IN THE MIDDLE OF A BLOCK. THE CROSSING ITSELF IS IN ANN ARBOR, MI, ON W. WILLIAM ST. BETWEEN S. ASHLEY ST AND S. 1ST ST. WHEN DRIVING WESTBOUND ON WILLIAM ST, ONE TRAVELS DOWNHILL AND ENCOUNTERS THE GRADE CROSSING NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL, ABOUT 20-30 FEET BEFORE AN INTERSECTION. EVERY TIME I CROSS THE TRAIN TRACKS AT THIS GRADE CROSSING--REGARDLESS OF WEATHER CONDITIONS--I NOTICE AN ALARMING LOSS OF BRAKING POWER THAT OCCURS EXCLUSIVELY WHEN CROSSING THE TRAIN TRACKS. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THIS WAS NORMAL, THAT PERHAPS THE CAR WAS JUST SLIPPING, BUT NOW IT SEEMS AS IF THIS REPRESENTS THE CONDITIONS THAT ARE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN JAPAN. THE PROBLEM IS 100% REPRODUCIBLE. TYPICAL TRAVEL SPEEDS ARE 15-30 MILES PER HOUR. THE BRAKING ACTION IS ONLY INTERRUPTED WHILE TRAVELING OVER THE BUMPY SURFACE OF THE RAIL TRACKS, AND THEN BRAKING ACTION IS RESTORED. HOWEVER, IF THERE ARE CARS QUEUED UP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL AT THE INTERSECTION, IT OFTEN LEADS TO SHORT BRAKING TIMES AND HAS CAUSED CONCERN REGARDING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BRAKES. I HAVE NOT SPOKEN TO MY DEALERSHIP REGARDING THE PROBLEM, NOR HAD ANY SERVICE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE REGARDING THE PROBLEM. AGAIN, I BELIEVED THIS TO BE MORE OF A DESIGN ISSUE THAN A PERFORMANCE PROBLEM, BUT IT IS ALARMING, NONETHELESS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK KEEPING AMERICA'S CARS SAFE. *TR

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED PRIUS 2010 V WITH TECHNOLOGY OPTION. AFTER DRIVING IT FOR TWO WEEKS CAR DESIGN HAS CAUSED A LIFE-TREATING SITUATION FOR DRIVER AND TWO PASSENGERS (ONE OF THEM BEING A CHILD) BY STOPPING AT THE INTERSECTION IN A NON-DRIVABLE CONDITION IN A WAY OF HIGH TRAFFIC IN THE NIGHT. CAR HAD TO BE BLOCKED OUT BY POLICE FOR 1.5 HOURS AND LATER TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. LATER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT INABILITY TO DRIVE WAS CAUSED BY INSTRUMENTAL PANEL LIGHT DIMMER TURNING OFF INSTRUMENTAL PANEL WHEN HEADLIGHTS ARE SWITCHED ON. NOTE THAT DIMMER ITSELF WAS NOT OPERATED BY THE DRIVER (IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN MOVED UNINTENTIONALLY SOME TIMES EARLIER) AND ACTUAL ACT OF TURNING INSTRUMENTAL PANEL OFF WAS TRIGGERED BY TURNING ON HEADLIGHTS WHICH INCREASED DIMMING LEVEL TO "FULL OFF" STATE. THIS CAR DOES NOT HAVE ANY "NON-ELECTRONIC" INSTRUMENTAL PANEL AND SO IS NOT DRIVABLE WITH IT OFF. IN FACT BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER WAS NOT AWARE THAT CAR IS EVEN ON AT THAT TIME BECAUSE THERE IS NO "DRIVE" SHIFT INDICATOR EXCEPT ON INSTRUMENT PANEL, AND FIRST REACTION WAS TO TRY AND RESTART THE CAR, WHICH FURTHER MAKE DRIVE SHIFT POSITION UNCERTAIN. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE DESIGN. DIMMER SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE CARE NOT OPERABLE. IN THIS CAR WITHOUT ANY NON-ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTAL PANEL, IT SHOULD BE NEVER POSSIBLE TO COMPLETELY TURN IT OFF. THIS FUNCTION SHOULD BE ELIMINATED TO PREVENT AN EVENTUALLY FATAL ACCIDENT THAT IS WAITING TO HAPPEN (OR MAYBE ALREADY HAPPENED). NOTE THAT CAR MANUAL DOES NOT MENTION: 1) THAT INSTRUMENTAL PANEL CAN BE COMPLETELY OFF WITH THE DIMMER 2) THAT THERE IS A DEPENDENCY BETWEEN DIMMING LEVEL AND HEADLIGHTS. TL*THE CONTACT TEST DROVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS FROM A AUTHORIZED DEALER. HE STATES THAT HE WAS WEARING POLARIZED SUNGLASSES. HE HAD EXTREME DIFFICULTY READING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER AND SPEEDOMETER GAUGE WHICH EXHIBITED DIM LIGHTING. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. BL UPDATED 10/09/09 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAS A DASHBOARD DISPLAY JUST BELOW THE WINDSHIELD THAT REPORTS THE SPEED, FUEL LEVEL AND OTHER OPERATING INFORMATION. THE DISPLAY IS A REFLECTED IMAGE OF A VACUUM-FLUORESCENT DISPLAY INSIDE THE DASH. UNFORTUNATELY, THE REFLECTION PATH POLARIZES THE DISPLAYED IMAGE SO THAT IT IS ALL BUT UNREADABLE THROUGH POLARIZED SUNGLASSES. UPDATED 10/16/09.
