ABS, Slip Indicator and Brake warning lights have appeared on the cars dashboard. DTC fault code C1391 has appeared indicating a failure of the Brake Booster and Brake Booster Pump assemblies per Toyota Customer Support Bulletin (ZJB) No.: POL18-03. Loss of regenerative braking, putting the safety off occupants at risk.
The Master Cylinder started failing while I was driving the car, the car only has 138k miles, the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, all the warning lights were on, and when I went to step on the brake, I had to push it all the way to the floor for any braking to happen. I remember being scared for my life because I had almost no brakes which I could've got into a serious accident or been killed had it failed completely. I took the car to the dealer and they diagnosed it with code C139: Abnormal Leak at Accumulator Assembly, and recommended a new Brake Booster with Master Cylinder Assembly and Brake Booster Pump Assembly with Bracket. The car by age was not in Toyota's extended warranty on the parts but mileage-wise it still is, so I was footed with a $4-5k bill to replace both parts.
I purchased a 2011 Prius 4 years ago from a dealership. For the last 2 years, whenever I drive the car, the ABS, brake, and skid lights are on. also, there's a slightly whirring noise every few seconds from under the hood. Braking has been affected, and I've had to increase my stopping distance as a result. Also, the brake pads and rotors deteriorate faster. Apparently, this is a common problem with this type of car. I've called Toyota, and despite it being a known flaw with this car, they refuse to do anything about it.
VIN: [XXX] Year/Make/Model: 2011 Toyota Prius Mileage: 87,433 Date: 11/4/2025 DESCRIPTION Sudden 80% brake loss. Loss of ABS Brake Light + ABS + Traction Control lights on dash (photo attached). Known failed brake actuator (C1391) — identical to 500+ complaints in PE19-004. Toyota corporate denied coverage (email attached). This is a SAFETY RECALL issue — please reopen investigation. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ABS Brake pump booster and actuator broke and got me almost into an accident. It's a known issue and it's a safety issue because car can still run but the brake is less sensitive. Please get Toyota to honor the repair.
The ABS actuator on my 2011 Toyota Prius has failed, which is a known and common issue with this generation of Prius vehicles. The component causes abnormal brake pedal feel and inconsistent braking performance. The vehicle has been inspected and diagnosed by a Toyota dealership, who confirmed the ABS actuator assembly needs replacement. This failure poses a serious safety risk because it affects braking reliability and increases stopping distance, especially during sudden stops or wet road conditions. There were no warning lights or messages prior to the failure. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The problem has been confirmed by the dealership service department but has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives.
Have continuous display of ABS , Brake lights for some time. Diagnosed as problems of ABS brake booster and pump. Toyota recognizes this issue but will not replace it.
Toyota issued a Customer Support Program ZJB for extended coverage of the brake booster and actuator assembly (this notice was not sent to the correct address the car was registered to with the dmv in 2019 so I never received the notice for this program) The Toyota program length was for 10 years or 150k miles. My car’s part just failed at 129k which is far below the 150k threshold. Despite being outside the 10 year window I am still under the mileage, the car is in perfect condition and this car is used for work for uber. The malfunction of the Toyota part in my car is a critical safety issue and because it is outside of the program Toyota refused to provide any goodwill assistance
I' m getting ABS warning light. Dealer confirmed that I need to replace Brake Actuator and Accumulator which costs me over $3K. Dealer refused to cover under warrant though it's a known issues with TOYOTA PRIUS vehicles.
ABS warning system on dashboard is intermittent. I hear computer noises near the front driver tire. Then the warning light goes out or reappears on dashboard. Issue is the expensive diagnostic fee that may not unearth the cause, and if cause identified the diagnostic fee cannot be applied to the expensive repair. That’s a hard pill to swallow —and not affordable given economy, and I just had all four tires replaced along with a wheel alignment. Also, the yellow tire pressure light now blinks non-stop. (Previously it blinked 3x then stayed on but stopped blinking.) Anyways, Lots of covo about same issue in the 2011 Prius chat room I found after googling “2011 Toyota Prius ABS warning system.” Wondering if software needs updating, or perhaps there’s a systemic mfg defect?
My ability to break unexpectedly stopped working while I was on the highway during morning, rush-hour. I was going 55 mph on the highway at the time and luckily, I was on an uphill incline when they went out, thus allowing me to be able to ‘naturally’ slow down. But had I not been on an incline at that time of the brakes faulting, I would have 100% caused a wreck because I could not break at all. My emergency breaks weren’t even working, which is confusing because I thought that was the whole point of the emergency break, was for if your regular brakes become faulty… But NONE of my brakes worked. Which has created a new fear I didn’t know could happen while driving… Also, all the lights that have to do with the breaking system were on (ABS, Traction control, BREAK lights). And a consistent building up hissing noise under the hood.
Our trac abs and brake lights came on and braking became more difficult but not totally gone. I took it to my mechanic (not Toyota dealer) and he said the codes were going off for the abs hydraulic system and it would be $3000 to fix! This is unacceptable. I feel like my safety is affected but no one else has been hurt YET. I’m trying to be proactive. they first appeared last month. No manufacturer, insurance agent or cop has inspected it. It can be inspected by appt. Please help
ABS actuator and pump failure
There were not any prior problem with my 2011 Toyota Prius' brake but it started making air pumping noises when I brake which makes me very nervous to drive my car. A local mechanic confirmed that the problem is the faulty brake booster assembly and pump. Toyota issued Customer Support Program for this problem but covered only up to 10 years from the first date of use. Although my car has less than 120,000 mileage, I have to pay for this repair and it will cost me close to $2500 at a local repair shop! I want to go to Toyota dealership to fix but their cost is going to be even more! According to online research, many Prius owners have this same problem and have to pay out of their own pockets. This is unacceptable. Toyota should put a recall on this problem and cover the repair cost!!
Brake warning came on and wouldn’t go off. Followed by continuous beeping and now the brakes are no longer working properly. You have to force the brake all the way to the ground to even come to a rolling stop. The problem first occurred on 3/8/25. The brake actuator seems to be a reoccurring problem that Toyota addressed but is no longer fixing. It is dangerous to drive my vehicle and others have said their brakes have completely failed when this problem arose.
My brakes suddenly stopped responding correctly as I was pulling up to a busy road. My car went part way into traffic and I was nearly hit. After speaking to my mechanic and my local Toyota dealership, I was informed that there was a know issue with the Brake Booster and Hydraulic Accumulator on this vehicle and that Toyota had extended the warranty several times but that it no longer covered my vehicle. They never once acknowledged the safety issue and I was never notified of the risk. I believe the extended warranty was setup to avoid a recall and hide the risk. I firmly believe a recall should be done on these parts and owners should be notified of known safety risks this presents.
While driving on the interstate, the "brake", "TCS", and "ABS" lamps lit up. The brake pedal was stiff and couldn't be depressed. The vehicle initially did not decelerate while attempting to push down on the brake pedal. While maneuvering off the interstate on to the exit lane, the pedal remained stiff however, the vehicle did begin to decelerate. Critically, the amount of time needed to bring the vehicle to a stop was significantly longer than normal. This brake failure could have resulted in a catastrophic, life threatening and/or deadly accident. The DTC associated with this brake booster and pump failure is C1391 which is referenced in TSB-0024-19. This is a known problem that exists in Priuses manufactured between 2010-2015 and addressed by Toyota with CSP(s). The CSP takes a reactive approach to this serious safety concern as owners who "have not experienced the condition described" were informed that "there is no action necessary at this time". The extended warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles is not applicable to countless drivers who are experiencing this failure caused by "internal malfunctions" outside of this arbitrary time/mileage frame. A letter was sent to the NHTSA on 9/19/19 by the president of Claremont and Capistrano Toyota to petition for the initiation of a Defect Investigation regarding this issue. The letter notes that this brake defect is "causing crashes that are injuring people- and Toyota is mishandling it". The advisor assigned to this repair estimated that they see this issue 1-2 times a month and increasingly, drivers are not covered by the CSP. Toyota is failing to take a proactive approach to this dangerous safety issue by telling owners to essentially wait and see if they experience this failure and then failing to take responsibility for said costly failure should it occur outside of their arbitrary time/mileage frame. This approach to safety is egregious, irresponsible, and unethical and it is putting countless lives at risk.
In 11/2024, I started experiencing intermittent noises coming from the engine compartment of my 2011 Toyota Prius. The initial sound resembled the buzzing noise generated when first starting the vehicle. Then the noise started to persist for extended periods after the vehicle was turned off. It would oscillate between buzzing for approximately 10 seconds & remaining dormant for about 1 minute, repeating this cycle. The duration of these cycles could extend for up to 20 minutes. Concurrently, I experienced several instances where the brake pedal would abruptly become stiff & difficult to press. Notably, no warning lights were illuminated on the dashboard. Recognizing these symptoms as unusual, I conducted online research and discovered that the issue could potentially stem from a malfunction in the “brake booster pump and assembly.” Given the potential for a loss of braking power and the risk of personal/public safety, I scheduled a diagnostic inspection at Toyota of Poway, Poway, CA, on 12/18/2024. It confirmed the presence of a problem with the brake booster pump and associated components. In light of this diagnosis, I made the decision to refrain from driving the vehicle until the repairs were completed. The repair costs amounted to $3,475.47. I found I had received a notification from Toyota’s Customer Support Program, designated as “Customer Support Program Notification-ZJB.” This notification explicitly acknowledged this defect & provided a repair coverage policy that stipulated a coverage policy of which I’m no longer entitled to. Despite not meeting the eligibility criteria for the repair coverage program, I am deeply troubled by the fact that this recognized defect persists in vehicles currently on the road, such as mine, without any corresponding recall action and subsequent repair costs covered by Toyota. Fortunately, I was spared from any accidents as a direct consequence of this issue. Many similar complaints here support this dangerous issue!
All brake lights on Dashboard came on. Almost got into an accident because brakes were not responding. Brakes started responding but lights remained on. At time it will contibue to beep and Brakes do not respond. I am seeing that this is a common issue happening to most Prius vehicles after a certain period. It is extremely expensive to repair. Since this is happening on quite a lot of Prius vehicles, I feel this should still be covered by Toyota. This appears to be a faulty Brake Pump and Brake Booster. This has not been inspected by a dealer but being that the car is a 2011, I'm afraid they will decline from what I have been reading.
I have been doing some research, and the brake actuator and ABS system failing is a common problem on these cars. Mine recently started acting up and they used to replace it for free. I got my Prius only 6 months ago and have not had any luck getting Toyota to replace it. This needs to be recalled it is a serious safety hazard if the brakes suddenly give out. They should be replacing this free on all cars having this issues and they are aware of the issue (Toyota). The brakes suddenly stopped working well and lights came on in this exact instant on the interstate. This first happened about a month ago. Tons of people are making complaints with the NHTSA for the same issue.
12 months ago we noticed a vibration while braking at very slow speed/creeping forward that worsened over time. We didn’t understand the significance at the time. In addition, we noticed more recently the brake pump running more and more frequently, even when the brakes weren’t being pressed. We suspect some sort of problem with the brake booster. This has had many claims against Toyota where my break booster is going out, and I have called toyota to assist since they've had a class action lawsuit that caused them to assist with recalls on vehicles; however the year my vehicle does not qualify for a recall. They opened a service case# 241010002348, but told me it would have to be an out of pocket expense since there's nothing they can do. Unfortunately this is a failure defect on the manufacturers production. Please help.
What component or system failed: 47070-47060 Pump Assy, Brake Booster w/Accumulator yes 47050-47150 Cylinder Assembly, Brake Master with Fluid yes put at risk: yes - abnormal braking ABS failure-traction control loss Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer: yes Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer: Not my specific parts Were there any warning lamps: Yes abs, traction control
The brake booster has failed. I was driving, and the ABS, Brake, and Traction Control lights suddenly came on. The brakes felt less powerful. I drove the car Broadway Toyota in Portland, Oregon for maintenance. I was told that the system has failed, and while this is a known issue. It is not currently covered. I was also told that the car is not safe to drive. Toyota had a "Customer Support Program" to cover this issue. However, the program expired on Oct. 8th, 2021. Had I known, I would have brought it in prior to the expiration date. This seems like a recall issue. In Toyota's paperwork for the Customer Support Program, it states that Toyota is aware of "certain internal malfunctions of the Brake Booster Assembly"!
I was driving on a surface street at about 40 miles an hour and then the brakes suddenly don't work. You have to press on the brakes very hard to make them stop. All the safety warning lights were lit up on the dash. Took the car into the Toyota dealership and they said that there was a brake booster and pump customer support program but it's now expired so they won't fix it for free. The brake booster part is about $2000. I contacted Toyota Customer Service and asked them when they sent the notices out for this. They looked up our vin number and said that the notice was sent to the previous owner, since we bought the vehicle used from a Toyota dealer. Spoke to a Toyota supervisor from customer service and told them we never were notified to fix the brake booster. The supervisor said they will not pay for the repair. I think this should be a safety recall and Toyota needs to repair these parts. It's very dangerous to drive the car when the brakes fail to stop.
Brake booster has failed. I'm told this is a known issue but no recall has been issued
To whom it may consern, I avoided a situation that could have been a very serious or deadly accident when my vehicle had unusual issue with the vehicle breaking system while driving on the freeway today [XXX]. The vehicle would not stop while pressing on the break pedal and I was able to quickly maneuver the vehicle on the shoulder of the freeway and was able to avoid a deadly crash. Looked on the dash and noticed that ABS, Break, and Traction Control lights all lit up. I was scared for my life and the safety of others around me. The vehicle was towed to my residence since it happened around 10:30pm California time. Quickly did some researched online for any recall on nhtsa.gov website but unsuccessful with any recall regarding the breaking system. I also found out that it is a common problem that other owners have been/experienced with the same vehicle year, make and model. I would greatly appreciate for any information I can gather in order to assist me on how I can get Toyota to look into this issue for the safety of myself and others. It was a very scary scenario that could have been a tragic one that I found myself into. Looking for a prompt response to address this issue. Thank you! Symptoms: The vehicle exhibits a constant and repetitive noise when the brake pedal is pressed. Additionally, multiple warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard, including the red brake light, yellow ABS light, yellow traction control light, and tire pressure light. Suspected Cause: The issue appears to be related to the brake actuator or accumulator. This may be associated with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) C1391, indicating an abnormal leak in the accumulator. This problem causes the brake booster pump to run continuously to maintain pressure, leading to the warning lights and noise. Safety Concerns: The malfunctioning brake system components could compromise the vehicle's braking performance and overall safety. Purchase Details: The vehicle was purchased recently from a dealership, and the issue was not present at the time of purchase.
On our 2011 Toyota Prius there is a complete loss of breaking. The ABS, TCS, and brake lights all came on at one but went off after a few minutes. A few days later the entire system failed when the car was started and now there is no breaks at all on the car. A few months before we took the car to the dealership complaining about a noise when hitting the breaks and was told it was normal and to ignore it. It looks like Toyota knows about this issue and opened a customer care repair program but it expired in 2022 and was not advertised at all so the only way someone would know about it would be if they had an issue. Currently in order to fix the problem we are looking at around $3000 in parts and labor. Looking at other websites including this one the issues appears to be widespread.
On April 28, 2024 I was driving when my brakes became squishy and my ABS warning light, red brakes warning light, and traction control light came on. I was very fortunate to be close to my destination and only traveling under 25mph. Roughly a week later it was driven approximately 150ft (on private property) and the brakes were very unresponsive. The car was never accelerated past 3mph for that move. The loss of braking was sudden and happened without any prior warnings. Had I been on a high traffic, high speed road, I believe it likely that this would have resulted in a catastrophic accident. The Master Cylinder Actuator Assembly and Brake Booster Pump Assembly failed. This was confirmed with OBD and a Snap-On Solus Ultra scanner. Both parts have been removed and are available for inspection upon request. They have not been inspected by anyone. I did contact Toyota about the braking issue and they did not express any interest in the issue or inspecting the failed parts. To make my Prius road safe and legal, I needed to replace the Master Cylinder Actuator Assembly and Brake Booster Pump Assembly. These parts were bought from Toyota, who has so far profited from my car's brake failure.
For the past 2 years I've had issues with the ABS, Traction, and Brake lights coming off and on on my dashboard of my 2011 Toyota Prius. Mechanics have replaced various things but have never been able to find the exact problem because the car doesn't either give any codes or it gives codes that don't really say what the exact problem is. I took it to a dealership again today, because not only are those 3 lights on but now the car is beeping continuously, and the dealership told me it was going to be over $5800 to fix the car, that's replacing the brake booster pump and the brake master cylinder, but the only code the car is showing is C1239, no other codes, C1239 is for the rear speed sensor LH. Every time I've had a mechanic/dealership look at the car, they can't find the exact issue and after replacing some parts, they tell me it could be the brake booster pump and the brake master cylinder, when I called toyota corporate about the warranty stuff to cover those being replaced because of the faulty issues that have apparently been acknowledged by toyota, toyota refuses to have the warranty work done, telling me that my car no longer qualifies for that warranty work, although I've never received anything from them talking about this issue in the past. I'm told now the beeping is those two items have completely failed and the car is now unsafe to drive, but it's the only vehicle I have to get to work, etc. The lights will come and go, but stay on more steady now with the beeping sound. Toyota should help to cover this, since they know it's a known defect!
No incident, 3⚠️ Light started recently, traction control, ABS, and Brake light, 07/15/2024. Big O tire did oil change, inspection, claims brake are ok, warning ⚠️ lights comes on and off intermittently, causes brakes when on to become soft pedal when stopping, I consider a defect of workmanship by Toyota on this 3011 model possibly others l. Thank you for your time
Brake actuator failure on the freeway warning lights started beeping had trouble coming to a stop no brake pressure had to swerve to emergency lane. From my understanding there’s a brake actuator recall took it into Toyota my claim was denied .
As is the case with I am sure thousands of Toyota Prius owners, the brake actuator in my 2011 Prius has failed. The car has approximately 128,000 miles, but given that it is a 2011, the car is outside the Toyota 10 Year/150,000 warranty extension. The deals wants $3,200 to repair. This part should last the life of the vehicle and I am asking NHTSA to help individuals such my myself and force Toyota to make the necessary repair free of charge due to the severe consequences to this part failing.
Driving yesterday on residential street, I gently applied my brakes to stop for a red light. The brakes did not stop the car; pumping the brakes did not help. Dashboard illuminated skidding car diagram, and BRAKE light went on. I took my foot off the gas, rode somewhat on the shoulder, and slowly found a place to park the car. Had to have it towed. No prior warning that the brakes would fail. Dealership advised it was a leak in the brake booster pump or actuator. Later learned that there had been a class action lawsuit dealing with this issue. Also that Toyota had extended the warranty when this happened frequently. I never got a recall notice about this. My car is a 2011 Prius with 59,000 miles. The extended warranty only went to 10 years, and mine is 11 years old, but I haven't seen anyone else in the chat boxes who had such a low mileage as mine. Thankfully neither I nor anyone was injured. But this is definitely a major safety issue and a very expensive repair. Over $3,000. What recourse do I have?
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal beeping sound heard. The contact stated that several warning lights were illuminated. While reversing in the driveway, the brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard before the vehicle stopped. The contact's husband an independent mechanic informed her that the brake actuator needed to be replaced. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 147,000.

Hello I purchased this s car used on 03/19/24. I was told the brake and Abs light would clear with new battery, which they installed on 03/19/24. It did clear for a couple of miles, brake light warning ⚠️ and abs came on, which causes car not to brake properly, I have not taken car back but believe it and s a defect of the manufacturer's that it has failed. Any help with this issue is appreciated. If you could tell me, what steps I can take to see if Toyota has any extended warranty for this issue Thank you for your Thank you for your time
Brake Booster, pump failure
ABS, Brakes, Traction control lights, and ! illuminated while driving car is under 150,000 miles. Took to an autoshop, Gerald's Tires and Brakes: was told Mastercylinder, booster, accumulator need to be replaced.
I bought this car new in 2011, and it is now driven by my daughter. The brakes started having problems around 2019, and the car was taken to Toyota service. It was thought to be a tire issue and the tires were replaced, but the brake issue remained. In February 2024, all the dashboard brake lights came on, and my daughter immediately took the car to Toyota service. The problem was a defective and leaking brake booster pump assembly, a defect well known to Toyota, and the subject of extended warranty on this model (10 years or 150,000 miles) and a recall by Toyota on some other models. Since it was after the 10 year period (despite reported problems during the 10 year period), corporate Toyota told the Toyota dealer service department and our family that they would not cover the $3500 repair bill incurred. This should have been a recall. I am horrified to think what could have happened to my daughter with defective brakes. Corporate Toyota is well aware of this defect. Even a Toyota dealer has previously reported it to the NHTSA. [XXX] . I request corporate Toyota pay for this repair and issue a recall for other unsuspecting drivers of these vehicles. This is a potentially lethal defect that needs a recall, not a post brake failure repair. I send my great thanks to you for investigating this. The conditions listed in Toyota Customer Support Program ZJB for the brake booster and master cylinder occurred after the 10 year in service date on my vehicle. Brake, ABS, and Traction control warning lights turn on intermittently and when this happens brake response is poor and cruise control shuts off. When applying the brakes an audible tat tat tat sound can be heard from the front of the car that sounds like the ABS being triggered. You should have toyota recall impacted cars and fix the issue as outlined in the TSB and support campaign.
The 2011 Prius has an issue known to Toyota, in which the brake booster pump fails after an indiscriminate amount of time, leading to significant loss in braking ability and control. Toyota knows of this because they issues an extended warranty coverage for these vehicles and this issue, that did not extend beyond 10 years, or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. [XXX] ) When I was driving my car down Highway [XXX] I lost braking control completely, with a series of constant beeping starting to emit from the braking system. Luckily through mashing the brake pedal and using ebrake I was able to get the car to slow down and pull off the highway. The brakes sporadically and randomly cut in and out with the power braking, leading to uncontrolled stopping power and jerky or inactive braking. There had been lights on the dash indicating the traction system or braking system had issues but these would frequently turn off and on and didn't result in a loss of braking ability or performance and had been there a couple months. Upon taking the vehicle to a Toyota Dealership (Charles Maund North Austin) I was told it was a C1391 error regarding a failure of the brake booster pump assembly and that it would need to be replaced and reprogrammed for about 3300 dollars. After looking online I saw there were many other people with this issue, all who were unable to fix this in the given 10 year frame. Many unsuspecting second owners of this vehicle do not know that there is a hidden danger waiting for them when their power brake pump assembly fails. If I had been a less experienced driver I would've certainly crashed and Toyota, knowing of this safety concern already, should have done the right thing and issue a recall for these vehicles. Brake warning lights came on, brake stopping has diminished significantly, throwing error codes, attached pictures of the error codes
While driving the car I had three lights turn on the dash simultaneously. The parking brake light, traction control light, and ABS light. The brakes worked but felt spongy and not as responsive as normal. I had it checked out and it has code C1391. The recommendation is to replace the brake booster pump. I was quoted over $2,000 for the repair. There was a Toyota Customer Support Program ZJB that addressed this exact issue. It expired two years ago, and I am now stuck with the repair costs. I believe Toyota should have notified me of this potential danger and/or inspected the vehicle. I meet all the requirements of the bulletin, but it has expired. I reached out to Toyota, and they would not offer any assistance.
The brake system is constantly failing/malfunctioning.It is available for inspection upon request. There has been several incidents where other vehicles have nearly been rear ended. I took my 2011 Toyota Prius (hybrid) to Toyota approximately 8 months ago. They/Toyota did confirm that the problem was indeed the brake booster. The warning lamps did come on soon as the brakes started malfunctioning.
I have a 2011 Toyota Prius with 85K miles, as I was driving on the highway the abs light, brake light, and TSV light came on and then brakes were not working like normal. Had to pump the brakes very rapidly and steer off to the right side of the highway and use the emergency brake to come to a complete stop. I called the Toyota dealer and they said its the brake accumulator fault and they will not cover the fix because it was out of the 10year/150K mile warranty per SB. Towed my car to an independent service center and they confirmed it was the brake accumulator C1391 code. cost me $3000 to fix.
I’ve been told by our machanic that our Prius’ ABS braking system is malfunctioning.
Brake ABS system dashboard lights warning system always always going off for the 9 years I've owned the car. Had the ABS system replaced and still the dashboard lights going off and the system not functioning properly.
I have been experiencing intermittent brake issues with this car now for the last 50k miles. Sometimes the warning lights on the dash will activate, sometimes not when I am experiencing issues. the power assist is the problem. - it activates and then deactivates without warning instantaneously, while applying brakes or not. Sometimes when I am applying the brakes without the brake assist working, it will instantaneously start working without warning, causing my car to almost lock up its brakes. This is very dangerous, especially in traffic. When I apply my brakes at any given time, I never know if I am going to have power assist or not. I have replaced the brake master cylinder once already with a mobile mechanic and the problem went away for about one year but now it is happening again so this seems to be a reoccurring issue with this car. I have decided to just stop driving the car and bought a different one. I am a delivery courier and I cannot be driving a vehicle unsafe as this. I have reported the issue to my local dealership, but they are refusing to troubleshoot without charging me and it’s telling me there are no recalls.
My brakes were making noise since month, now the ABS light turn on.
The ABS, anti-skid, and brake lights came on. Immediately, the brakes were less than full stopping power, and it was obvious it was not safe to drive the car any further. We had noticed that a pump was being activated when the brakes were being used, but no service codes were being displayed when checked. We later found out there was a recall on the Brake Booster and Accumulator, but it was only a limited recall, no notice was sent to us, and no repair was authorized by Toyota unless the brakes completely failed. Once the dash warning lights came on, the C1391 service code appeared when checked, "Abnormal Leak of ACC Pressure". This issue is a safety matter because your brakes fail instantaneously at any moment while driving.
Traction control, ABS and Brake warning lights came on while driving. Car is now at the dealership for complete replacement of power pump and master cylinder assembly at a cost of $3,300.00
Brake booster and brake booster pump assembly are faulty and failing. Brakes are still functioning, but will ultimately fail without warning, from what I have read. This is highly dangerous for myself and other motorists. I was driving last week and tried coming to a stop at an intersection. I pushed the brake pedal and the car hesitated and then jumped/lurched forward before coming to a complete stop. The brake booster is sounding every 30 to 45 seconds to try and build back the pressure it is losing. Toyota offered a "Customer Support Program" for these parts, as there's been numerous premature failures. Unfortunately, my vehicle no longer fits within the parameters of the support program (see attached). From what I've read though, Toyota has been negligent with replacing the brake booster under the support program. I have called Toyota Corporate and they have offered no reprieve and won't stand behind this faulty part. Toyota needs to be forced to recall these 3rd gen Priuses and ordered to replace the breaking system. Expecting customers to shell out between $2-3k to have the ability to safely break/stop their vehicle is ridiculous, especially when Toyota is more than aware of this issue. I was quoted $2600 over the phone to remedy the issue from an independent hybrid shop. I've owned 7 Toyotas and two have been Priuses. This 2011 is by far one of their worst to roll off the assembly line with numerous reports of breaking problems, oil consumption issues, and head gasket failures. They need to stand behind their product(s), especially to brand loyal customers. Dear Mr; I own a 2011 Toyota Prius, and this week my brakes failed while driving down the highway. The ABS and Break lights and the ESP warning light on the instrument panel come on. The brake pedal is hard and has an intermittent hum in the engine area. The scanner gave the code C1391 / ACC PRESS abnormal leak error. I want to file a formal claim against Toyota for the failure of my car's brake system and request repair/replacement of my car's brake system. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? BRAK SISTEMS / YES, IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? IT WAS DIFFICULT TO BRAKE / THE CAR WAS DEVIATED WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE / I LEFT THE ROAD DUE TO THE RISK OF A COLLISION BY NOT HAVING THE ACTIVE BRAKING SYSTEM. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? YES / INDEPENDENT SERVICE. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? NO. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? NO
All of a sudden, a few weeks ago, the ABS, TRAC, BRAKE, and brake warning lights all illuminated on my 2011 Toyota Prius, and the brakes became hard to press. Turns out, this is a known issue with this model of the Prius. DTC C1391 stored in the ECU. There is a defect with the brake booster/brake booster pump, and Toyota issued a Customer Support Program to extend the warranty on these two parts, but the program ended in 2021 and I am just now having this issue, although my Prius only has 115k miles. This should be a recall. I should not have to pay more than $3500 at the Toyota dealership to get this replaced when it is a defect with the parts that Toyota made (I should not have to pay ANYTHING). No dealership in the area wants to honor it either. Instead, they want to charge me $3500. And when I called Toyota Corporate, they brushed it off and told me "the program expired a whole 2 years ago" without even trying to work with me on the cost of the repair or anything. Complete let down from Toyota.
Brake actuator failed. Noise when applying brake but no code or dashlight. Looks like a common problem across prius 2011 model cars
The brake actuator on my 2011 Prius failed. Toyota issued an extended warranty of 10yrs/150k miles because they knew there was a problem with the product. I have less than 80k miles on my car and the actuator failed. I feel like I am being penalized because I don't drive my car as often. I contacted Toyota and was dismissed by them because I was outside of the 10yr window. The repair was $1737.98 in parts and $780 in labor by a Toyota certified technician.
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the check engine, service brakes, ABS, and the traction control system warning lights were illuminated. The contact parked the vehicle on the side of the road for approximately 3 minutes before continuing to drive to her residence. The contact stated on March 17, 2023, while her husband was approaching a traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle properly. The contact stated that several warning lights were illuminated. The driver stated that the vehicle cruised to a stop independently. The driver decided to drive at a slow speed to the residence. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the brake master cylinder, the brake pump assembly, and the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 159,000.

Three lights appeared on the dashboard…code C1391. This has affected the braking system, and the traction control…and the brakes no longer regenerate the battery. The mechanic said “YOU MUST NOT DRIVE THIS CAR” until a $2,700 repair is made. There was, apparently, a service bulletin sent out in 2019, and was then extended until 2022…which we did not receive, although we’ve been at the same address since we bought the car. But our car did not develop this common issue until now…2023, and Toyota says it was not a safety recall, so they don’t need to fix it, or help us get it fixed. We believe it IS obviously a safety issue….since my brakes can go out at any moment.
On April 25, 2023 I started my Prius and as soon as I braked I knew something was not right. I noted that warning light were on. When I pushed on brake pedal, the resistance was very soft for about 2 inches of pedal travel. At that point the brakes grabbed very quickly. I drove to the Toyota dealership (Huntington Beach Toyota) and was informed later that day that the master and pump master cylinder needed to be replaced. The dealer said that Toyota did have a program to replace these assemblies, but had not issued a recall, which (in my opinion) it should have. I've had quite a few cars, most of which lasted for more than 200,000 miles. I've never had such a failure nor have I heard of one. Clearly there was a manufacturing defect that should have required a recall.

Brake actuator failed while driving down the road on Friday, 04/14/2023. The car became hard to slow down/brake. Brake light, traction control light, ABS warning lamp came on, and tire pressure lamp came on. Next day lights went out. Then again all lights as above came on while driving down the highway. That was Wednesday 04/18/2033. Took to Toyota dealership who confirmed brake actuator had failed. Car has 133,000 miles on it. Prius was in the repair shop at Norton Toyota of Tulsa, OK, from Thursday 04/27/2023 until Saturday 04/29/2023.

on 4/12/2023, I was driving near an intersection and the e-brake and abs light both came on and the brakes on my car were suddenly twice as hard to apply, with a "soft" feeling to them. I was able to pull into a nearby brakes plus location. My younger sister and friend were in the car at the time. The problem has been reported by a Toyota dealership in California. The component was inspected by a repair associate at Brakes Plus and he confirmed that the electric brake booster on my prius was shot. There were zero warning signs of the problem prior to the incident.

Brake booster and brake booster pump failure

It is very unfortunate that the brake booster extended warranty was declined by Tustin of Toyota specially after having my vehicle in their hands for another recall when the warranty was active. This is something I can not wrap my head around. I would like to speak to someone in regards to this dealer. Who can I speak with?
Reporting an issue related to Toyota's CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAM BULLETIN (ZJB): REPAIR COVERAGE FOR BRAKE BOOSTER AND BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLIES ON CERTAIN 2010 MY PRIUS AND CERTAIN 2010 MY PRIUS PHV VEHICLES. Finally got a C1391 error with the respective dash lights. Increased hissing/pumping was occuring from the brake assembly for about a year before hand until the code/lights happened. Customer Support Program Bulletin is closed but hoping it reopens.
After approximately 6 1/2 years of owning this 2011 Toyota Prius Hybrid (purchased in 2012), the brake pedal went completely to the floor and there was no braking. The brake fluid was completely FULL. Intermittently, this would occur, but brakes would come back operational in a few minutes. In 2022, the brake lights on dashboard started lighting up intermittently and go off. I had the complete brake pads, etc. replaced in June 2022. Last 1/2 of 2022 the entire brake dash lit up. I got into Toyota dealership 1/12/2023. They said the complete brake Master Cyclinder and Brake Pump replacement was required. They got the dash lights off. This car has only 133,023 miles. I finally checked the internet to see this is a TOYOTA issue! A recall on this brake assembly should be issued! I was unaware of this 5 years ago. This could cause a serious accident and should be fixed at Toyota's expense!
ABS actuator and pump failing, which requires much harder pushing on the brake pedal to come to a complete stop. This part is supposed to last for the lifetime of the car and is now failing roughly 11 years after purchase. I took it to the Toyota dealership and was quoted $2,500 to repair it.
As I'm sure you have heard from the numerous complaints on the internet the ABS on this vehicle is having issues. The repair is over 3,000 dollars. Toyota needs to recall this brake pump. I can't pay 3,000$ to stay safe in my vehicle. They made a defective part and were somehow allowed to extend the warranty instead of recall it. My vehicle is under the mileage but over the years so I was pretty much told too bad. This needs to be addressed at a actual road safety level which is why I am writing you. Thank you for your time.
The ABS Actuator and Booster failed with diagnostic error code C1391
I have reported this once and numerous times to Toyota. I even paid to "fix" the problem. My daughter was driving and all the dashboard lights came on and the brakes do not work. It's doing it again after they supposedly "fixed" it. My family is at risk! If anything happens, I will seek legal action. I can't believe a company as big as Toyota wont take responsibility. And that a recall wont be done. I've seen numerous people report the same issue. PLEASE do something.
ABS warning light came on, followed soon by a beeping warning sound. Brakes felt odd. A few minutes later, complete loss of brakes.
brakes in the car failed due to loss of hydraulic pressure/ brake acuator system. toyota issued a service bulleton for this problem approx 2017-2021 and the dealer and corporate would not honor the repair to my vehicle each time i brought the car in for inspection after experiencing constant issues with my brakes. the brakes finally failed and i could not stop the car while driving at interstate speeds. the vehicle was inspected by a private mechanic and confirmed the failure that toyota refused to honor. no warning lamps or messages in the car until the brakes actually went out while the car was in motion at interstate speeds. symptoms first appeared in 2017, but the dealer insisted nothing was wrong even though i demonstrated the symptoms to their mechanics in person. i reported the dealerships behavior to corporate and they did not help. they claimed the brakes were ok because the car's computer did not give an error code "yet".
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated when his wife turned on the vehicle the brake, abs, and traction warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated while she was driving at 10 MPH, she noticed that the brake did not have pressure as usual. The vehicle was diagnosed at an AutoZone, and they stated that there was an abnormal ACC (C1391). The manufacturer was contacted, and they stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was 178,000.

This issue started happening intermittently beginning in April 2022. The ABS/Traction Control/Emergency brake lights came on all at once and the car lost power braking ability. The car would stop, but it required much more force on the pedal and an increase braking distance. Folsom Lake Toyota Service said that there wasn't anything they could do if the warning lights had turned off and to try to recreate the issue. It happened again in May 2022 while my daughter was driving the car back from Tahoe. She was not hurt, she avoided an accident. The car returned to normal operation after it was parked for one day. It happened again in July of 2022. This time the brakes hissed when applied. Called Folsom Lake Toyota to have it looked at. They diagnosed it as error code C1391 and the master cylinder (acctuator) and brake booster needed to be replaced. The repair was $3200, so we took the car to Roseville Toyota for a second opinion. Roseville Toyota was able to recreate the issue and the brakes completely failed at their service center. Their estimate was for the same $3200 repair. We called Toyota Corporate and they responded that there was a Toyota Customer Support Bulletin ZJB sent out for this issue. The bulletin extended the factory warranty on the parts for 10 years or 150,000 miles. The bulletin describes the exact code and symptoms our car experienced. Our car is 11.5 years old and 113,000 miles. In speaking with Toyota Corporate, their position is that they already extended the factory warranty once and since that our car is past the 10 years, they refuse to consider my complaint or provide any "goodwill" assistance with the repairs. Toyota knows there is an issue with their master cylinder and brake booster parts. They set an arbitrary warranty extension date rather than recalling the cars. Toyota is waiting for the brakes to fail BEFORE they fix the problems. My daughter could have been seriously injured or killed, or she could have killed someone else.
safety brake booster and actuator concern. the car abs, master cylinder brake lights are on. the booster is making hissing air sounds and the brake pedal vibrates. the code is 1309 maybe more.. this is a problem with thousands of prius and costs thousands to repair. Toyota extended this warranty to 10 years 150k mine 2011 so lost the repair last year but only has 150k miles.
My brake accumulator pump has begun running much more frequently than it should. Upon extensive online searching, I learned that this condition is warning sign of an eventual failure of the brake booster pump and/or master cylinder which will cause brake failure at an unpredictable time when the brakes are applied. I understand that this condition is known by Toyota and has been addressed by "warranty enhancement ZJB". However, my car is outside of the cutoff age/mileage. The president of Capistrano Toyota in Southern California made this problem known to you with an urgent letter dated 9/19/19 and expressed why this NEEDS to be a recall issue, not just what it is now. The reason is because not only has Toyota time limited repair coverage, they would not do the repair until failure occurred....a totally illogical and dangerous plan. I should not have to pay ~$3000 to have this well-known problem repaired at my own expense just because the invitable failure hasn't happened yet, and I'm not within Toyota's arbitrary time limits for having the repair covered at no cost. The symptoms I am experiencing are precisely those that are the precursor to this known failure. Why has NHTSA not acted to force this issue to be a full recall? You are putting lives at risk by not acting in a timely fashion given the Toyota dealer's warning I mentioned above.
While driving at roughly 58mph, while going around a turn: multiple dashboard lights came on, Tire pressure, traction control, emergency brake, one other. My brakes became less responsive (roughly half braking strength). This is consistent with the pseudo recall offered by Toyota covering my vehicle for a limited time, for which no notice was given and no warnings were sent.this issue has caused over five dozen crashes and during the duration of the recall, vehicles were not eligible until the braking system had failed. There were no signs of the faulty part until after the extended warranty period had expired, but the issue is the warrantied part, and the failure is consistent with the failure caused by the manufacturing defect responsible for the extended warranty effective in 2017
All brake lights came on while driving on freeway Abs, traction control, and Brake light Pulled over and brake pedal felt different, not as sensitive to braking as usual. Toyota dealer said code c1391, brake booser Internal leak
Multiple brake warning lights came on at once. Took to dealership and was told Brake Booster Pump had failed requiring replacement of parts totaling in over $3,000 in cost. Attached is a class action lawsuit about this exact issue, as well as a Toyota Customer Service Bulletin acknowledging that they knew about the issue years ago.
All brakes warning light went on while driving. The anti skil, abs, emergency brake lights. The car was unable to stop and code reader indicated a brake booster pump and brake actuator/accumulator failure. The failure was confirmed, and the brakes just stopped working while driving. I almost crashed into another car as the brake was not working no matter how many times I press it. Contact Toyota, they are careless and said it was not cover in any recalls and an enhancement warranty just passed 4 months on my car. A previous voluntary recalls was issue for the car model year before mine. This is a fundermental feature of a car and should be fix regardless of age. It is putting people's lives in danger and will cause accident!
Brake System Warning light ABS warning light Slip indicator light 6/3/2022, while driving on the highway the above warning lights illuminated. I depressed the brakes but failed to engage. I was able to slow down by shifting the gear into “B”. Eventually the brakes engaged and I brought the car to a stop. Toyota created customer support program ZJB but the warranty covered a period until August 2021.
Hello, My vehicle a 2011 Toyota Prius V, Vin: XXXXXXXXXXX is showing the breaks, ABS and TRAC Warning lights and the breaks become less responsive. I was able to find out that TOYOTA had a recall for this issue that can be found here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10158577-9999.pdf I email Toyota about the issue and this was their response: ===== BRAND ENGAGEMENT ADVOCATE, May 26, 2022 at 10:46 AM Dear Customer, Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. We are sorry to learn your 2011 Toyota Prius is experiencing concerns with the ABS and TRAC warning lights coming on. Toyota strives to produce long-lasting, trouble-free parts and while we cannot predict an average life expectancy for any specific part or component, we do provide our limited implied Toyota warranty which reflects our confidence in the products we offer. According to your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), XXXXXXXXXX, the warranty for the part you are inquiring is 3 years, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first starting from the vehicle's in-service date: 03/20/2011. We verified this vehicle was involved in Customer Support Program ZJB which was covered for 10 years from the vehicle in-service date which expired 3/20/2021 or at 150,000 miles which ever occurred first. We have confirmed there are no related to your ABS or TRAC concern. While there are situations where we gladly look into out of warranty financial assistance requests, we are simply unable to offer any assistance due to the age and mileage of your vehicle. If we do initiate any type of Safety Recall Campaign (SSC) in the future, you will be notified directly via first class mail. Sincerely, XXXXXX Toyota Brand Engagement Center ===== My request is that I wasn't aware of the recall until the issue started happening a week ago (5/15/2022) and I would love to get my car for the service recall or Customer Support program if Toyota would Email me or call me or send me a letter about this issue. Please help
The brake system failed. Over time there was a frequent sound (which I now know is the brake pump) when you opened a door. Eventually at 120K the entire brake system failed throwing the ABS code. I had to replace the brake actuator and booster (2 parts are recommended in the repair) for a little more than $1500. After speaking with the parts rep at Toyota (I replaced it with geniune Toyota parts) I was under the impression that the parts person knew that people frequently buy these parts which led me to believe something was known but not divulged.
While driving on the freeway 3 warning lamps lit up: parking brake, traction control & the "!" (attention warning light). I was about to exit and while braking noticed my brakes were not working well. It required at least twice the muscle effort to stop and took a further distance. Prior to this the brakes seemed to have been working perfectly. I stopped at an Autozone on the way home and they scanned the C1391 error code. A quick internet search showed that this had been the subject of a recall for the year and model of the car: 2011 Toyota Prius. I have not yet taken it to the dealer but understand the recall no longer covers this year. However, the safety of myself and passengers was definitely at risk due to a known problem of this car.
Driving on a cross country trip and went over a bump to have all the brake lights on the dash illuminate and brake system failed. Brakes were very hard to push but was able to safely stop the vehicle. Brought it to Toyota dealership and was told that the master brake cylinder, hydraulic brake booster and pump assembly needed to be replaced and that the vehicle was not safe to drive. I was advised that the parts are on national backorder and they don’t know when they’ll get the parts. I did more research into this and this is a known issue that Toyota has refused to address outside of a limited program that is no longer active for this model year. Toyota is refusing to cover any of the costs. This is an incredibly dangerous safety issue and Toyota should be forced to recall and reimburse everyone who has had this issue regardless of model year or mileage. Toyota is currently facing a class action lawsuit for this issue as well.
All the brake lights, ABS, and VSC lights came on, lucky I was not on the road. Now my brakes are mushy and I'm driving without any safety. I learned of the Customer Support Program - ZJB, but it expired for my 2010 Prius w 85k miles on 8/31/2021. I called Toyota Cooperate Office, they could not care less. They told me it is expired, bye! They need to make this a recall as the it is a major KNOWN problem for many cars. Repairs will run $3500 plus. This is my 2nd Toyota I bought brand new, and my last if Toyota is not willing to help.
Traction control, ABS, and brakes come on all at once and brakes don’t work properly. This happened a few times on the freeway and thank god I didn’t get into a crash. Car doesn’t feel safe to drive. I took the car to a mechanic to check the codes and the code C1391 (abnormal leak in accumulator) came up. I see that this is a very common problem with Gen 3 Prius’. Toyota has not called these car even though the problem seems to happen to all Prius’s of that generation. This is very dangerous and I fear driving my car and that the brakes might completely fail potentially causing a crash at accelerated speeds.
The brake actuator failed leaving the vehicle with no brakes.
Our Prius started showing brake issues in June 2021 that has us concerned about safety. The car lurches when the brakes are pressed, and the brake functions inconsistently. This seems to fall under the “brake booster pump assembly with master cylinder” issue that many others have complained about. When we called Toyota, they said a letter was issued in April 2019, but when we took the car in for diagnostics in August 2019, the brake issue (diagnostic code) didn’t appear then. So they said they won’t fix the hazardous defect. Even more troublesome is the fact that this issue has caused crashes and injuries in the past, and Toyota hasn’t issued a recall. Please help consumers hold Toyota accountable for putting their customers in harm’s way.
ABS actuator pump won't stop running, ABS light comes on, and brakes are spongy.
My daughter was driving the vehicle on highway and all dashboard lights came on. Abs brake and traction. The brakes would not work. She had to decelerate and pull off and turn car off. Terrifying. Got it checked at Toyota. Told them about that and how car lunges forward when brakes hit on a bump or pothole. We had to pay 2500 to replace brake booster which had an “internal error”. Got car back and all lights came back on. I’m literally terrified to drive my car because of what may happen. Toyota refuses to recall and fix whatever this issue is.
I have a 2011 Prius it has no warning light in the dashboard but the brake was causing me problems when I stopped the car almost causing me to crash so I had it inspected by a mechanic and got a FIXD sensor both are telling me it’s the brake actuator( code c1391) I could of been seriously hurt and I drive my toddler and I to and from places.
I was driving my vehicle through a state park, on a mountainous road that’s curvy and hilly. I was going about 35-40mph up a hill. As I was accelerating up this hill, my cars break light notifications all went off. 3 of them; stability control, ABS and one other. When I got to the top of the hill, I had to go back down a hill. I tried hitting the brakes and they were extremely weak. I could barely slow down or stop safely. I knew I had about 5 more minutes of driving left through this park so I went 5 miles an hour to not run into trees or slide off the road around a curve. I immediately got to a parking lot and called for a tow truck to take my vehicle to the dealership. When it was dropped off I received a phone call from the dealership saying my brake actuator had gone out. It will be $2,655 to fix… the part? $2000. Apparently there was an extended warrantee on this part. That ended on 12/31/2021 or 150,000 miles. My incident happened on 1/26/22 (less than 4 weeks later) with 153,059 miles on my vehicle. I contacted Toyota Corporate and was told they couldn’t do anything about it. I was given a ticket number of 220127001781. I told them I never received a notification and begged for mercy on this part. I told them my phone number and email had never changed since buying the vehicle. I called another mechanic and was advised that there were 44 people on the waitlist for this exact part. I’m only 26 days and 3,059 miles over each warrantee and they’re refusing to help for a $2,000 part that is CLEARLY a safety problem for this vehicle.
It's the exact issue from the ZJB customer support program. The brake booster is faulty. All the brake warning lights came on all at once. A few weeks ago the brakes were starting to make a noise so I brought it to the Toyota dealer and also called Toyota customer care. The dealer ran a diagnostic and said the booster needed to be replaced but Toyota customer care wouldn't cover the $3500 fix because the customer support program ended on Aug 31 2021. The extension of the ZJB program covered 10years or 150,000 miles. Even though my Prius is a 2011 and got the diagnostic done in 2021, they said I was technically past the 10 year mark because evidently my Prius was initially purchased in September of 2011 and I had the problem diagnosed in Dec of 2021. Three months late. I've spend hours on the phone with Toyota pleading my case and they have been of no help. They know this is a problem. There's a class action lawsuit. There's been petitions. This issue needs to be recalled.
My husband and I bought a 2011 Toyota Prius 7 months ago. It was a one owner car in excellent condition with unusually low miles. The last two times we've had the dealership service it we've asked about a noise that the brakes were making. Both times we were told the brakes were fine and didn't need any service. Two days ago the ABS light came on. We immediately took it to the dealership. Yesterday we were told that the brake booster and actuator have gone out in the car. Turns out that Toyota issued an extended warranty for this exact repair to be done due to a manufacturers defect with the parts. It was for 10 years or 150K miles. It expired in October. My car has less than 90K miles on it! Now I have to pay $2800 to repair a manufacturers defect because Toyota refuses to fix it now. This is a known safety issue. They are doing everything they can to save money and avoid a recall. This is NOT good business. There is currently a class action lawsuit that has been filed against Toyota for this very issue. Toyota refuses to recall the product and does everything in it's power to not fix the issue. People have already been injured due to this issue. They even tell the dealerships not to fix the issue under the warranty unless the car spits out a particular code - no matter the issue someone is having with their braking system. A quick Google search will yield many testimonies from others who are part of this lawsuit who are experiencing the same issues. This is a known safety hazard due to a manufacturers defect that Toyota has known about for years. This is not a new issue and it effects several types of vehicles made by Toyota. I have made many phone calls to customer service and been told several times by different people now that this is no longer their problem. Toyota refuses to step up to the plate and fix this issue in these cars. This is not just in the Prius. They have made it abundantly clear that they DO NOT care about the safety of their consumers!
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but hesitated to respond. The contact did not recall the number of feet in stopping distance delay. The ABS warning light, traction control warning light, tire pressure warning light, and an unknown warning light were illuminated. The Brake message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake booster and the brake booster pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the failure was a known failure however, the extended warranty had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000.
Mileage: 139,000
While driving on a freeway in December 10th 2021, the ABS, Brakes and Tire pressure sensor lighted up and suddenly the brakes felt stiffed and the car did not respond as usual. Luckily I was able to move to the side, stop and make sense of what just happened. I went straight to a mechanic and got the diagnose C1391. He share the bad news, the cost to fix it would run over $2000. After further research, I found out this is an ongoing issue with many Prius specially 2011. It appears there was a customer support program related to this issue that I never heard of. Now I do, but it is too late. It will cost me serious money to fix it. This is a safety issue that can not be ignored. Toyota should be made responsible to fix it. Either they do it voluntarily or some of the owners may have no choice but to take this issue to court. It is my understanding there are some law suits filed already. We need this issue to became a recall, before someone gets hurt. I will have to consult with an attorney.
While driving a 2011 Toyota Prius, 3 dashboard lights (ABS, Brake, and yellow) all lite up at once, making braking difficult. My daughter almost rear-ended the car in front of her. When taken to the dealership, my car had an error of C1391. There was a customer support program from Toyota "ZJB" with this exact diagnosis of issues with the brake booster, which I was never notified nor was it listed on their website. They refused to fix it as it had expired. My car has less than 100,000 miles even though their recall listed up to 150,000 miles. I've attached the Toyota dealership diagnosis and repair cost of $2969.99 which I can not afford. I'm assuming that now traction control and anti-lock braking are now non-operational making this car dangerous to drive, especially for my daughter.
September 28, 2021 I was driving on a highway when my ABS lights, brake lights, and traction lights went on. I noticed a changed in my brakes and felt unsafe to drive . Luckily I was able to pull over. I took my car at Toyota and they confirmed its the hydraulic brake booster & pump. $2,900 for a warranty that was expired 4 weeks short. I read this is an on going problem and lawsuits about their brake systems. This should be a recall safety issue! It's unfair they allowed 2012 prius models and newer years to have theirs warranty extended to December 2021 but not the 2011 prius?? They should offer the deadline to ALL prius models or at least feel free to help out. 135k miles in and I can't believe it's worthless all because Toyota couldn't adjust they policy to extend the dates.
one year after bought, was losing power, replacing a lot of batteries, headlights and lamps then car would lose power while driving, not start continually everyday for each day after and even started on its own. i took in a lot and they put my vin to the wrong person..someone rainsford so my service recs were not recorded. said no battery code, didnt check altenator, and even tho serv advisor said the break was squishy to him and he heard the loud buzz noise when pushing, it was not replaced. they tried to blame it on keys being in car which is how it starts and runs! not parked on hill or in bad temps and driven long trips, none of which SHOULD BE REQIRED to start a car to get to dying patients on time. we bought charger and use on both priuses daily. lost power while driving, got hurt, and josh's pt. died. nothing but headache nightmares. have long written records where submitted all and they just like to deny things or try to find a way to blame on consumer. my only fault was buying an undisclosed deathtrap. they need to refund us both cars and damages and expenses and our time and missed work. the shuttle was a joke. i have my own top notch code reader and it said battery was fine. it was new, yet they wanted to sell me one so they said it coded but refused to show me. they are just trying to make money and really hurting people. sending my title and all my personal info to a stranger and me catching after 7 years broght on an ID theft im still fighting. very rude front staff and drivers..sheldon.
My car is a well-maintained 2011 Prius 4 with only 88k miles on it. Recently the traction light, the tire pressure light, the BRAKE light, and the ABS light came on suddenly at once. I took it to my mechanic, who is a certified Prius technician, and he diagnosed it to be a defect in the brake booster and the booster pump (basically my brakes can stop working at any moment). He also mentioned that this was the 3rd Prius this week to come to his shop with this problem. A problem that is not only incredibly unsafe but costs $2,000-$3,000 to fix. One of his customers couldn't afford it or wait the week for the part to arrive and, against his advice, left with her car and is driving around with brakes that could fail at any moment. This seemed wildly unsafe for any Prius driver, so I went online for further information and I found a petition for a recall with 177 complaints and 60 car accidents because of their brakes failing. I also found that Toyota had issued a "Customer Support Program ZJB" for this very issue. Which is great except for all the Prius owners, like me, who never received notification. I know for a fact I would have gotten my Toyota looked at (and fixed) if I would have known about this. It's too risky not to. According to Toyota, there are approximately 946,100 vehicles covered by this Customer Support Program ZJB. That's 946,100+ people who have the risk of their brakes failing and they might not know about it. I know there is only so much that Toyota can be liable for but shouldn't this be a recall and fixable for all owners at all times? I asked Toyota about Customer Support Program ZJB and they informed me that my coverage expired only 14 days ago, so they can't help me. THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE SHOULD NOT HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE. This should be fixable to all Toyota drivers regardless of when they first drove their car or some arbitrary date that Toyota created. We trust Toyota to keep us safe by buying their vehicle in the first place.
The brake booster pump is failing, and it is available for inspection upon request. My safety is put at risk because when it fails, my breaks will become extremely difficult or impossible to apply; if the vehicle is in motion and I need to apply the brakes at the time of (or after the) failure, I will be unable to stop the vehicle safely, putting myself and others at risk of collision. The problem been reproduced and confirmed by a dealer. Besides The Toyota dealer, the vehicle or component has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There have not yet been any warning lamps or messages regarding the failing component, however I discovered the issue because of the symptom of a high frequency (every 25 seconds or so) of the whirring noise made by the leaking brake pump when it engages, without ever applying the brakes in between. Symptoms were first noticed approximately a week ago, or 4 days before taking the vehicle to the dealer.
The 2010 Prius will suddenly develop Brake faults. The BRAKE, ABS and Traction Control lights will light up on the panel. The cars braking capacity effectively reduces to 50% and the regenerative charging also goes missing. This is an issue when the car all of a sudden would brake with half the capacity anticipated putting the occupants and others around at huge risk. Toyota does not have a plan to fix this issue yet - they would reset the code which fixes the problem but for a couple of trips / days / weeks.. an uncertain time until this happens again. Replacing brake oil, boosters and pads did not help. I am not sure what could the remedy be, please advise Toyota to investigate and create a formal recall where all effected cars could be repaired for the drivers safety.
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated while driving 40-45 mph, the brake pedal temporarily disengaged on its own when the vehicle hit a bump in the roadway. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving at various speeds. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

My brakes make a weird noise and I have to press hard to brake . I’ve taken it to a couple of mechanics and the brakes are fine, but it might be the brake actuator.
Around 100,000 miles the brake system has been sluggish and it appears the ABS system is failing. Currently the car has 118,617 miles and constantly exhibits sluggish and spongy braking. Hitting a pot hole or any type of bump while pressing the brakes can cause the ABS to light up temporarily and the brakes feel as if they release for 1 second and re-engage. When pressing the brakes there is a popping/air-like sound in the brake system constantly. Bleeding the brakes did not solve this issue. Through research I have discovered this is a complaint of many Prius owners about their brake actuator. It is a $1700+ part that, if fails, will cause the entire brake system to fail.
THERE WERE THREE DRIVING INSTANCES WHERE, WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES, MY BRAKE FOOT WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. TWICE I WAS ON THE CITY STREET AND ONCE IN A PARKING SPACE. MY SPEED AT THE TIME WAS SLOW BUT THE BRAKE PEDDLE GOING TO THE FLOOR DID NOT STOP IT. NO TURN WAS INVOLVED IT DID STOP EVENTUALLY BUT THE CAR WAS CARRIED MUCH FURTHER THAN EXPECTED WITH NO BRAKING CONTROL. THE ONLY COLLISION WAS WHEN THE FRONT END HIT A LOG IN MY HOME PARKING AREA. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPT., BUT AFTER 4 HOURS, I WAS TOLD, "COULD NOT DUPLICATE CONCERN CUSTOMER WILL HAVE TO RETURN WHEN FAULT IS CURRENT". THEY DROVE IT AND USED THEIR COMPUTER BUT NOTHING FAULTY WAS EVIDENT. I WAS SENT OFF IN THE CAR. WITH AN INTERMITTENT FAILURE, IT WASN'T LIKELY. SO, NOW I HAVE A CAR I DON''T DARE TO DRIVE AND WON'T SELL BECAUSE IT'S A HAZARD!

BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY HAS A SLOW LEAK. SOLENOID KEEPS MAKING NOISE AND THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY MAKES CONSTANT NOISE. WHEN BRAKING HARD IT DOES NOT STOP PROPERLY. BRAKING COMES TO A SLOW STOP AND BUT PUSH DOWN ON THE BRAKE HARDER TO KEEP THE CAR FROM ROLLING FORWARD. CONFIRMED FROM TECHNICIAN AT DEALERSHIP YET ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO REPLACE IT WITHOUT ERROR CODE (ZJB PROGRAM). CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THEY SAID WITHOUT ERROR CODE FROM VEHICLE THEY WILL NOT AUTHORIZE THE REPAIR. DESPITE CONFIRMATION FROM THE TECHNICIAN THAT THERE IS A LEAK IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE IS IN THE HANDS OF A ERROR CODE. ASKED CORPORATE IF THEY CAN OVERRIDE THE ERROR CODE AND THEY REPLIED NO.
THE BRAKE BOOSTER IS CYCLING AND LIGHTS GO IN AND OFF. I'VE READ THAT THIS MEANS IT'S A FAILED BREAKER BOOSTER OR PRESSURE VALVE IN THE BREAKING SYSTEM. IT'S VERY COMMON TO FAIL, LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED IT

BREAK ACTUATOR IS FAILING IN MY 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CAR NOW HAS A UNPREDICTABLE ABS BREAKING SYSTEM. SOMETIMES THE BREAKS WORK AND SOMETIMES THEY QUICKLY FAIL AND A ERROR LIGHT COMES ON. THE LIGHT THAN GOES OUT AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED AND ALL IS FINE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT WILL LEAD TO MANY ACCIDENTS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE TELLS YOU ITS GOOD TO GO, MEAN WHILE THE ABS SYSTEM IS FAILING TO STOP THE VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY. I AM SCARED BECAUSE I DONT KNOW IF THE CAR WILL DO THIS ON A TURN THEN LOSE CONTROL INJURING MYSELF AND OTHERS.

BRAKE LIGHT, ABS,SLIP INDICATOR,BRAKE SYSTEM WARNIG LIGHT SYSTEM ALL CAME ON WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH VELOCITY [75M/H] IN THE RAIN AND LOST 75% OF THE BRAKING POWER PLUS THE CAR STARTED TO SLIDE. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM ON A CAR THAT HAS A CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROGRAM NOTIFICATION FROM TOYOTA[ZJB] THAT WAS SENT TO ME WITH A WARNING OF SUCH OCCURRENCE. THIS IS DOWN RIGHT IRRESPONSIBLE TO A MAJOR CAR MANUFACTURER TO ALLOW THESE VEHICLES ON THE ROAD WITHOUT TESTING THE ENTIRE SYSTEM ON EACH OF THESE AFFECTED VEHICLES AND WITH FOR A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE TO OCCUR AND CAUSE PUBLIC HARM OR EVEN DEATH. I HAD JUST TAKEN THE VEHICLE FOR SERVICE A FEW WEEKS PRIOR WHERE I EXPLAINED THE SERVICE ADVISOR OF AN ISSUE WITH BRAKE PULSATION. HOWEVER, THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS NOT THROUGHLY CHECKED AND WAS JUST TOLD THAT ITS THE FRONT ROTORS THAT ARE UNEVEN, THANK GOD I DID NOT FULLY LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT AS IT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN BODILY HARM TO MY FAMILY. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY TO MISS CLOSED-CALL HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AFTER SKIDDING. WHEN I APPLY BRAKES GOING DOWN THE RAMP, THE CAR SKIDS AND THE BRAKE DOESN'T STOP THE CAR UNTIL I GET PRETTY CLOSE TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I AM MORE CONCERNED BECAUSE SOME PARTS OF THE ROAD ARE UNEVEN WHERE I LIVE THAT INCREASES THE CHANCE OF BRAKE FAILURE. IT HAPPENS ON SURFACE ROADS WHEN THERE IS A BUMP TOO. THE BRAKE SYSTEM APPEARS TO BREAK DOWN; ABS MODULE AND BRAKE BOOSTER LOSE POWER. THIS CAUSES BRAKING TO BE HARDER AND POTENTIAL SAFETY FOR THE VEHICLE TO LOSE ALL BRAKING CAPABILITY. MY CAR SPONTANEOUSLY STARTED SHOWING THE ABS SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT, THE "BRAKE" LIGHT, AND THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL INDICATOR LIGHT WITHOUT WARNING WHILE PARKED. AS SOON AS THIS HAPPENED AND I PUT IT IN MOTION, THE CAR BEGAN RESPONDING POORLY TO BRAKING, WITH INCREASED PRESSURE AND LACK OF RESPONSIVENESS. ADDITIONALLY, THE CAR IS RECEIVING BARELY ANY BATTERY CHARGE FROM THE BRAKES (A SMALL AMOUNT COMPARED TO THE NORMALLY FULL CHARGE), AND A WHIRRING NOISE CAN BE HEARD ABOUT EVERY 3 SECONDS ( THE SAME WHIRRING NOISE THAT OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS STARTING UP, WHICH I THINK MAY BE RELATED TO THE BATTERY). THIS ISSUE HAPPENED WHILE THE CAR WAS AT REST, AND AFFECTS THE CAR WHILE IN MOTION AND AT REST. THE CAR FEELS UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO UNPREDICTABILITY WITH THE BRAKES AND THEIR EFFECTIVENESS. I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE BRAKE ACTUATOR.

THE WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS GO ON AND OFF, AT RANDOM. CODE C1391 SHOWS WHEN SCANNED. THIS IS SAME SYMPTOM AS EXHIBITED BY 2010 MODEL YEAR PRIUSES COVERED BY RECALL. MINE IS 2011, EXACT SAME ISSUE BUT NOT COVERED BY RECALL. PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED AT LOW 5-25 MPH AND HIGHWAY SPEEDS (55-70 MPH) THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS IF THIS HAPPENS AT HIGH SPEED (HIGHWAY) AND THE PROBLEM OCCURS THERE IS A SUDDEN CHANGE IN BRAKING QUALITY AN ACCIDENT MAY RESULT. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS MOVING, AT ANY SPEED.

I HAVE AN EARLY YEAR 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS, THE BREAK BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY WORK INTERMEDIATELY. SOMETIMES IT SHOWS ERRORS WITH LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD AND BRAKES HAVE A LOT OF PLAY AND ARE SPONGY AND OTHER TIMES THEY WORK PERFECTLY NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND WHEN I WENT TO USE THE BREAKS IN A TRAFFIC SITUATION THEY ENDED UP HARDLY WORKING PUTTING MYSELF IN A HIGHER RISK FOR A COLLISION AND PUTTING MY LIFE ENDANGER.

MY 2011 PRIUS VERY RECENTLY HAS STARTED MAKING AUDIBLY NOISE WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHETHER IN MOTION OR STOPPED. THIS NOISE CONTAINS CONTINUOUS WHIRRING, WHINING AND LOUD CLICKING NOISE. THESE NOISES WHERE NOT SEEN BEFORE COMPLETELY. I SPOKE TO DEALER MENTIONING A TSB PERTAINING TO THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE IN SPECIFIC AND WAS TOLD NOTHING CAN BE DONE UNTIL IT FAILS COMPLETELY, WHICH IS BAD, AS I HAVE A FAMILY OF 3 AND GOD FORBID IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY, A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD AND TOYOTA DEALER (RUDY LUTHER) RESPONSE IS IRRESPONSIBLE. I AM ACTUALLY WORRIED MORE NOW ON WAITING FOR THE BRAKES TO FAIL. THIS LOUD CONTINUOUS CLICKING NOISES OCCURS THE MOMENT CAR IS TURNED ON AND THE NOISES LINGERS ON FOR SHORT WHILE AFTER THE CAR IS TURNED OFF, AT MOMENTS I HAVE TO PRESS ON THE BRAKES REALLY HARDER THAN USUAL TO GET THE CAR SLOWED AND IS A TREMENDOUS PANICKY SITUATION. I AM REGISTERING AND REQUESTING FOR THIS TO BE LOOKED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE ANY CATASTROPHE.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY OR INTERSTATE, MY TRACTION WARNING LIGHT, THE BRAKE LIGHT, AND THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ALL CAME ON, AND THE BRAKES BECAME HARD TO PRESS. WHEN LETTING OFF THE BRAKE, THERE WAS AN AIRY, SUCTION SOUND. AFTER A WHILE, WHILE DRIVING, ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS WENT OFF, AND THE BRAKE PRESSURE NORMALIZED. THERE IS STILL AN AIRY SOUND WHEN I USE THE BRAKE PEDAL, THOUGH, WHICH ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE THERE, EVEN WHEN THE WARNING LIGHTS ARE OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 4 TIMES WITHIN THE PAST SIX MONTHS. I HAD A DIAGNOSTIC TEST RUN, AND IT GAVE CODE #1391, LEAKAGE IN ACCUMULATOR ABNORMAL, WHICH POINTED TO AN INTERNAL LEAK IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER/MASTER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY. I NOTICED THAT TOYOTA HAS ISSUED RECALLS FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM IN 2010 AND PRIOR PRIUS MODELS, BUT MINE DOES NOT QUALIFY BECAUSE IT IS A 2011. SINCE THIS ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED AND APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN TOYOTA'S BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS RECALL EXTENDED TO COVER MODELS BEYOND 2010.

THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT, ABS, AND TRACTION LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER AND THEY REPORTED THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY WHEN THE LIGHTS INITIALLY CAME ON AND THE LIGHTS STAYED ON WHILE IT WAS MOVING (HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS). THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WAS RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. IT SEEMS THE 2011 CONTINUES TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

MY CAR WAS PARKED ON THE STREET,I GOT INTO IT, TURNED IT ON, SHIFTED TO DRIVING AND STARTED PROCEEDING FORWARD. I THEN NOTICED 3 LIGHTS (THE ABS LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT, AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT) SUDDENLY APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY OCCURRED PRIOR TO THE LIGHT COMING ON, IT JUST SUDDENLY APPEARED. THE ERROR CODE IN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM READ C1391. THE DETAILS READ THERE WAS "ABNORMAL LEAK IN ACCUMULATOR". THE CAR NO LONGER DRIVES SAFELY. IF THE BRAKES ARE PRESSED SUDDENLY THE CAR SKIDS INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN. IN ORDER FOR THE CAR TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP A LOT MORE PRESSURE HAS TO BE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE COMPARED TO BEFORE ABS PROBLEM. THE STOPPING DISTANCE HAS INCREASED BY APPROXIMATELY TWICE ITS LENGTH. THE CAR IS NO LONGER CAPABLE OF SHARP TURNS, THE BACK END OF THE CAR SKIDS DANGEROUSLY LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE TURNING, DEPENDING ON THE DIRECTION THE DRIVER IS TURNING. THE BRAKING, HANDLING AND CONTROL OF THE CAR DECREASES SO MUCH WHEN THE ROADS ARE WET THAT AT TIMES THE CAR SKIDS EVEN WHEN GOING AT A CAUTIOUS SPEED IN RAIN. FOR MY SAFETY AND FOR OTHERS I DRIVE IN "B" INSTEAD OF "D" WHEN IT RAINS.

SINCE THE LIGHTS HAVE CAME ON, I HAVE NOTICED THAT I HAVE TO PRESS DOWN FURTHER DOWN ON THE BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. MY STOPPING DISTANCE IS FURTHER NOW AS WELL.
WHEN BREAKING AND STILL MOVING, THE CAR WILL ACCELERATE MOMENTARILY RESULTING IN GOING FASTER FOR A SECOND OR TWO. THIS HAPPENED RANDOMLY OVER THE YEARS AND MAY IN SOME INSTANCES BE RELATED TO HITTING AN IRREGULARITY IN THE ROAD, BUT I CANNOT BE SURE. IT HAS NOT CAUSED AN ACCIDENT, BUT IS STRONG ENOUGH THAT IT COULD. I'M A PRETTY SAFE DRIVER SO TEND NOT TO RIDE ON THE TAIL OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE NOT KEPT TRACK OF WHEN IT HAPPENS.
THE CAR STOP WORKING ALL THE DASH LIGHTS STOP WORKING ,THE BRAKES START GETTING HARDER AND THE DON'T STOP AT ALL AND BEEPING WITHOUT STOP THAT NOISE AND THE HIBRYD SYSTEM STOP WORKING AFTER I LIVING FOR SOME RECALLS REPAIRS AND THE WANT ME TO FIX THE CAR TO PAY AND I KNOW IS NOT MY FAULT EVERYTHING IS BECAUSE IS THIS CAR IS ALL ELECTRONIC SYSTEM.NEVER ON MY LIVE I HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH MY OTHER CARS.ONLY WITH THIS ONE AND NOW THEY ONE ME TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THE COMPANY MAKES WRONG.THIS IS NOT FAIR AT ALL.BEFORE I WAS RECOMENDED THIS CAR BUT RIGHT NOW PEOPLE ASK ME AND I HAVE TO TALK NEGATIVE SITUATION ABOUT IT.
WHEN I BRAKE ON AN UNEVEN SURFACE (POTHOLES, BUMPS, ETC) THE CAR WILL SOMETIMES JUMP FORWARDS. I AM UNSURE WHETHER IT IS REFERRED TO AS BRAKES SLIPPING BUT IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME THING THAT I'VE READ HAPPENING TO MANY PEOPLE. IT WAS AN ISSUE IN THE 2010, WHICH LED TO A RECALL, YET THERE IS NO RECALL ON THE 2011. IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE, PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT THE ACTUATOR WAS THE PART THAT NEEDED REPLACING, YET IT IS A $3-4K PART AND SHOULD NOT BE LEFT UP TO THE CONSUMER. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING EVER SINCE I'VE OWNED THE CAR. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY SO FAR THAT IT HASN'T ACCELERATED ME INTO ANOTHER CAR OR PERSON.

EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE HAS THE EXACT PROBLEM THERE IS NO RECOGNITION FOR SUPPORT DUE TO THE YEAR OF THIS VEHICLE. I WAS NOT AWARE I EVEN HAD A PROBLEM UNTIL I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR A SOFTWARE RECALL UPDATE. WE WERE EXPERIENCING HEAVY RAIN AND MY INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON WHICH IS WHY THEY CHECKED THIS AND CONFIRMED THE ISSUE ALTHOUGH MY BRAKES ARE WORKING FINE. I AM NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY TOYOTA IS NOT HONORING THE FIX FOR THE DEFAULT OR WHY AFTER DISCOVERING THIS ISSUE IN 2010 THE 2011 WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED. I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME HELP IN THIS MATTER.

THE FOLLOWING IS A SUMMARY OF HOW I BECAME AWARE OF THE POWER BOOSTER AND MASTER CYLINDER PROBLEM WITH MY 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS. 'UPON DISCOVERY OF MULTIPLE LIGHTS DISPLAYED ON DASHBOARD SUCH AS BRAKE, ABS SYSTEM & TRACTION LIGHTS, DURING DRIVING THE BRAKING PERFORMANCE HAS CHANGED DRASTICALLY & THE CAR NO LONGER PERFORMS BRAKING FUNCTION ADEQUATELY. UNABLE TO RELY ON SAFE BRAKING DUE TO BRAKE RESISTANCE FELT WITH STIFFENING IN WHICH PEDAL DEPRESSES DEEPLY & MORE TIME IS REQUIRED TO COME TO A FULL STOP. WHEN BRAKING THE HYBRID BATTERY DOES NOT CHARGE & RUNS DANGEROUSLY LOW RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO THE HYBRID BATTERY WHICH CAN LEAD TO SUBSTANTIAL COST TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. 'CAR BROUGHT TO FIRESTONE FOR DIAGNOSTICS. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION BY THEIR TECHNICIAN IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER/MASTER CYLINDER WAS DAMAGED & MALFUNCTIONING AND WAS IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. INFORMED REPAIR WOULD BE IN EXCESS OF $1,500.00. SEE ENCLOSED SUPPORTIVE DOCUMENTATION FROM FIRESTONE DIAGNOSTICS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED AND WAS STIFF. THE CONTACT HAD TO TAP THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKE AND ABS INDICATORS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CHARLES MAUND TOYOTA (8400 RESEARCH BLVD, AUSTIN, TX 78758 (866) 797-4354) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE ACTUATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 1901140996. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 119,384. *TT*JB

BRAKE BOOSTER AND ACTUATOR FAILED AND ERROR CODE C1391. VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND TOYOTA KNOWS THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF CASES INVOLVED WITH THIS ISSUE. THE YEAR PRIOR SAW A MASSIVE RECALL OF 87,000 VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE SAME ISSUE HAS CARRIED OVER AND TOYOTA REFUSES TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ISSUE.
Mileage: 120,500
BRAKE ACTUATOR HAS GONE OUT GIVING A CODE OF C1391. I HAVE HAD THE CAR LESS THAN A YEAR AND THE BRAKES ARE NOW GRABBY AND NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE GEN 2 PRIUS (MY PREVIOUS CAR) AND WAS COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. APPARENTLY THE GEN 3 PRIUS HAS THE SAME ISSUE AND TOYOTA HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY OF THE 2010 PRIUS TO THE MANUFACTURING DATE OF 11/2010. MY PRIUS WAS MANUFACTURED IN 12/2010 AND I WAS JUST NOTIFIED IT WOULD BE $4000 TO FIX THE ISSUE THAT IS A KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT. APPARENTLY TOYOTA DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME AND IT'S A DIRECT SAFETY ISSUE WHEN THE BRAKES DON'T WORK AS INTENDED.
Mileage: 130,000
MY CAR ONLY HAD 120K MILES AND THE BREAK BOOSTOR AND ACTUATOR BREAKS DOWN WHILE WE WERE ON THE ROAD. MY WIFE DRIVES THE CAR WITH MY 3-CHILDRENS. SHE WAS ALMOST HIT THE OTHER CAR ON HIGHWAY BECAUSE THE BREAKS SYSTEM STOPS WORKING AT NORMAL MODE. THE DASH BOARD SHOWS ALL KINDS OF BREAK, TRACTION CONTROL, AND ABS LIGHTS . THIS IS A LIFE THREATNING ISSUE AND TOYOT NEEDS TO REPLACE THIS PART WITH NO CHARGE BECASUE IT HAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECTS AND THOUSANDS OF PRIUS OWNER HAS THE SAME ISSU.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40-50 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS HEARD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO BE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. MARIETTA TOYOTA (750 COBB PKWY S, MARIETTA, GA 30060, (770) 422-1490) WAS NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 182,000.

THE PROBLEM MY CAR EXPERIENCED HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON I-110 IN PENSACOLA, FLORIDA AND PRESENTED ITSELF ABRUPTLY (THROUGH THE CAR'S WARNING INDICATORS AT LEAST) ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 31ST HEADED TO PENSACOLA BEACH FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND FROM OUR HOME IN BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA. ALL THE CAR'S BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON SIMULTANEOUSLY AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE MASTER BRAKE LIGHT, THE ABS LIGHT, FIVE DIFFERENT LIGHTS IN ALL. I PULLED OFF THE INTERSTATE, WENT TO AN AUTOZONE STORE, CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL AND BRAKE PADS (ALL LOOKED NOMINAL) AND GOT THE CAR'S COMPUTER CHECKED FOR WARNING CODES (NONE CAME UP). SEEING NOTHING CATASTROPHIC, BUT BEING UNSURE OF WHETHER OUR CAR WAS REALLY SAFE TO DRIVE EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKES STILL FELT FUNCTIONAL (IF A BIT OFF), WE GOT THE CAR BACK TO BATON ROUGE AND BROUGHT IT TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP'S (ALL-STAR TOYOTA, ON AIRLINE HIGHWAY) SERVICE DEPARTMENT. WE HAD NOTICED FOR SOME WEEKS PRIOR INCREASINGLY FREQUENT BUZZING SOUNDS ' ANYONE WITH A PRIUS KNOWS THESE, SUCH AS WHEN YOU TURN THE CAR OFF ' MADE BY (I'M TOLD) THE CAR'S BRAKE ACTUATOR PRESSURIZING THE BRAKE FLUID. THIS ESCALATING FREQUENCY OF THE NOISE, AND A CERTAIN CONSTANT 'PULSING' OF THE SOUND WHEN THE BRAKE WAS SLIGHTLY APPLIED, BUT NOT PUSHED DOWN TO THE FLOOR ' I NOW UNDERSTAND TO BE SYMPTOMATIC OF A FAILING BRAKE ACTUATOR. FOLLOWING SOME RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED IN 2013 TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR THOUSANDS OF 2010 PRIUS AND OTHER TOYOTA AUTOMOBILES FOR A PROBLEM WITH BRAKE ACTUATORS; ALSO, IN 2016, A WARRANTY EXTENSION AND PART REPLACEMENT WAS OFFERED TO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF 2004 THROUGH 2009 TOYOTA PRIUS VEHICLES FOR PROBLEMS WITH BRAKE ACTUATORS. IN THAT MORE RECENT MATTER, OWNERS WERE OFFERED A WARRANTY EXTENSION TO 10 YEARS AFTER FIRST USE OF THE CAR OR 150,000 MILES, OR UNLIMITED MILEAGE OR AGE UP TO THE END OF 2017.

TAKATA RECALL MY 2011 PRIUS HAS AN ISSUE WHERE THE BRAKE BECOMES SPONGY AT RANDOM WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. THE BRAKE, ABS, AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS ALL ILLUMINATE SIMULTANEOUSLY. AFTER RESETTING THE COMPUTER, THE ISSUE COMES BACK WITHIN 10-30 MINUTES OF DRIVING AT RANDOM. TOYOTA TOLD ME IT IS A $3,000 FIX AND THERE IS NO RECALL FOR MY YEAR. MY CAR HAS 110,393 MILES.
Mileage: 104,000
DRIVING VEHICLE DOWN HIGHWAY, TAPPED BRAKES BUT BRAKES DID NOT WORK, ALL THE LIGHTS ON MY DASH LIT UP. I LOST TRACTION IN BRAKES CAUSING VEHICLE TO LOSE CONTROL.
4 LIGHTS CAME ON MY DASHBOARD: BRAKES, ABS, ETC. SO I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID I NEED A NEW BRAKE ACCUMULATOR BUT IT ISN'T COVERED AND IS A $3500 REPAIR. I SEE THAT THE 2010 PRIUS WAS RECALLED FOR THIS SAME PART BUT THEY WON'T COVER MINE.

GOT IN CAR ONE MORNING AND ALL THE BRAKE / TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM RELATED LIGHTS ARE ON. TURNED CAR OFF, WAITED 10 MINUTES RESTARTED CAR AND LIGHTS ARE STILL ON. TESTED BRAKE FUNCTION IN YARD, REDUCED BUT STILL ABLE TO GET CAR STOPPED. TOOK IT TO SHOP AND READ CODES, CAME BACK AS THE ACTUATOR WHICH IS ALREADY RECALLED ON PREVIOUS YEAR MODEL PRUIS', OBVIOUSLY THEY DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE ON THE EARLY GEN 3 MODELS (2010 & 2011). I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE OTHER PEOPLE WITH GEN-3'S THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE OS THESE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE GEN-2 RECALL BECAUSE THEY ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. WITH IT BEING A DEALER ONLY PART AT $4500-$5000 (PARTS AND LABOR) TO FIX ON A CAR THAT'S ONLY WORTH ABOUT $10,000 I WONDER IF IT'S REALLY WORTH FIXING. AT THIS POINT THE CAR IS PARKED BECAUSE WITH THE DIMINISHED BRAKING PERFORMANCE I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT.
BRAKE ACTUATOR FAILURE. ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKE LIGHT ALL ON DASHBOARD. THE CAR HAS NO REGENERATIVE BRAKING. ISSUE OCCURED RANDOMLY WHILE IN MOTION.

BRAKE ACCENTUATOR FAILED - NO WARNING AND TRACTION CONTROL/BRAKE LIGHT/ABS WARNING LIGHTS ALL ILLUMINATED. HARD BREAKING TEST @25 MPH CONFIRMS ABS NOT WORKING (I.E. TIRES SKID) AND BREAKING DISTANCE ADVERSELY IMPACTED FOR NORMAL BRAKING. HYBRID SYSTEM CHARGING FROM BRAKING IS DIMINISHED.

Mileage: 180,000
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY ALL THE BREAK LIGHTS CAME ON AND STAYED ON BRAKE, ABS AND SKID LIGHTS ON ALSO NOISE UNDER HOOD BY BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY VERIFIED ABS / BRAKE LIGHTS ON). TOLD ME I NEEDED TO REPLACE BRAKE ACTUATOR / BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP / BLEED / AND RE-FLASH SYSTEM . FOUND OUT THIS ALSO HAS BEEN HAPPENING ON THE 2009 AND THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID AND THEY HAVE A RECALL OUT ON THIS. I WAS TOLD AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH THIS OCCURRING
Mileage: 96,000
ON UNEVEN ROAD SURFACES (WASHBOARD ROAD, MANY SMALL POTHOLES, GRAVEL ROADS, ROUGH ROAD SHOULDERS) BRAKES WOULD GIVE OUT IF BRAKING HARD. IF FELT LIKE ONCE ABS KICKED IN THE BRAKES WOULD GET ALMOST COMPLETELY RELEASED. THE CAR WOULD BRAKE JUST FINE ON FLAT SURFACES, WET OR DRY. I HAVE MULTIPLE VEHICLES AND KNOW HOW ABS BRAKES WORK BUT THOUGHT THE PRIUS BRAKES WERE JUST A BIT MORE SENSITIVE AND I HAVE TO WATCH MY DISTANCES MORE CAREFULLY AND AVOID HARD STOPS. THEN ON APRIL 23, 2018 THE CAR STARTED TO MAKE SOME STRANGE NOISE BUT NO DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON. I CONTINUED DRIVING AND NOTICED THE BRAKES WERE WORKING ONLY INTERMITTENTLY. AFTER I ALMOST CRASHED WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BREAK IN TRAFFIC I LIMPED BACK HOME AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE REPAIRS TO REPLACE BRAKE PUMP AND CYLINDER ASSEMBLIES COST $4,193.31 BUT THE CAR WAS DRIVEABLE AGAIN. HOWEVER, I NOTICED THAT THE REPAIRS ALSO CORRECTED THE ABS PROBLEM THAT WAS PRESENT SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW. I THINK ANYONE WHO DRIVES A 2011+ PRIUS SHOULD GET THEIR BRAKES CHECKED FOR EMERGENCY BRAKING WHERE BRAKES STOP WORKING THUS ALLOWING THE CAR PLOW AHEAD EVEN IF THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DOWN TO THE FLOOR.
Mileage: 107,984
THE ABS/BRAKE/SKID/WARNING TRIANGLE ON. MY 2011 PRIUS III IS 121K MILE. THIS WENT ON/OFF FOR A FEW DAYS THEN IT WAS ON THE WHOLE TIME. THE BRAKE SEEMS TO LOOSE THE HYDRAULIC POWER BRAKE. I FEEL LIKE THE BRAKES FEEL WEIRD WHENEVER HIT SMALL BUMP, BRAKE JUST FAILED FOR A SECOND. I WENT TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THEY SAID IT'S THE ACTUATOR THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED AND IT'S EXPENSIVE $2-3K. THEY SAID IT NEED TO BE FIX SOON BECAUSE BRAKE MIGHT FAIL AT ANY TIME. THERE SEEMS TO BE A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FOR THE 2010 AND OLDER BUT NOT 2011 AND NEWER. SEEMS LIKE TOYOTA STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH NEWER MODEL, NOT FIXED YET. PLEASE BRING THIS ISSUE UP FOR SAFETY REASON.
Mileage: 121,000
THE BRAKES TEMPORARILY DISENGAGED SOMETIMES WHEN BRAKING. AT AROUND 100,000 MILES, THE BRAKE ACCUMULATOR WOULD CONSTANTLY MAKE NOISES WHILE DRIVING AND AFTER SHUTTING THE CAR OFF. EVENTUALLY THE BRAKE ACCUMULATOR AND BRAKE BOOSTER FAILED COMPLETELY AT 117,000 MILES, COSTING AROUND $4,000 TO REPAIR.
Mileage: 117,000
UNKNOWN CAUSE. THE BREAKS TEMPORARILY DISENGAGE (FOR ANYWHERE BETWEEN 1-3 SECONDS) WHEN THE CAR ENCOUNTERS A SMALL BUMP OR POT-HOLE IN THE ROAD, WHILE BREAKING DOWNHILL. USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN BREAKING HARD ON A DECLINED FREEWAY OFF-RAMP. THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED ME TO REAR-END ANOTHER VEHICLE ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS.
Mileage: 70,000
THE BRAKES ARE PUMPING SLOW SPEEDS AND THE VEHICLE MAKES MUCH MORE NOISE. THE CAR MAKES BUZZING SOUND EVERY 30 SECONDS OR SOONER. A REPAIR PERSON SAID IT IS THE ABS ACTUATOR THAT IS ABOUT TO FAIL.
Mileage: 111,000
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, WITHOUT WARNING, I LOST POWER ASSISTED BREAKING ABILITY - ACCOMPANIED BY A NUMBER OF DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE USING MANUAL BREAKING. I HAD THE CODE CHECKED AND HAVE LEARNED THAT THE (CODE 1391) BRAKE ACCUMULATOR FAILURE IS A COMMON ISSUE IN THE PRIUS AND HAS BEEN SUBJECT TO A RECALL/REPLACEMENT FOR THE YEARS PRIOR TO MY MAKE (I BELIEVE 2008-2010). CLEARLY THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE AND THE SUDDEN/NO-WARNING FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM CAUSES AN ALARMING AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS LOSS OF BREAKING CONTROL DURING HIGH SPEED DRIVING. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT USING THE BREAKS AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE AND WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT THE MANUAL BREAK PADS WERE SERVICEABLE BUT I NEEDED TO RAPIDLY INCREASE THE PRESSURE ON MY BREAKS TO SLOW DOWN SUFFICIENTLY TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT.
Mileage: 111,090
MY BRAKES CONSISTENTLY LOCK AND THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD WHEN I HIT A POTHOLE WHILE BRAKING. THIS CAUSED A CRASH WHEN THE CAR WAS ONLY A COUPLE YEARS OLD WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND IT LUNGED FORWARD INTO THE BACK OF A CAR. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND I'VE SEEN THIS COMMENT OFTEN WITH THIS VEHICLE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY TOYOTA HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE.
Mileage: 20,000
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS LOW SPEEDS, THE ABS AND TRACTION INDICATORS ILLUMINATED WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. THE DEALER (UNIVERSAL TOYOTA IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS) DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND THE PUMP FOR THE BOOSTER/ACCUMULATOR WERE FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH CASE NUMBER: 180-4162-158. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.

I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 35 MPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. THE BRAKE , ABS AND TRACTION LIGHTS CAME ON ALL AT ONCE. I SOMEHOW MADE IT HOME BUT I COULD HAVE EASILY CRASHED. I HAD MY 9 YEAR OLD IN THE BACK SEAT AND HE ALSO GOT VERY SCARED. NOW I CANNOT DRIVE MY CAR AND THE BRAKES FEEL AS THEY AS STUCK AND VERY HARD. I TOOK MY CAR TO A REPUTABLE MECHANIC AND HE TOLD ME IT IS GIVING HIM CODE C1391. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT THE 2010 PRIUS HAD UNDER THE RECALL. MY PRIUS IS 2011 AND NOT UNDER THE RECALL. I FEEL THAT THE 2011 SHOULD BE UNDER RECALL BECAUSE MANY THOUSANDS OF LIVES ARE IN DANGER NOW.

I WAS AT AN AUTOMATIC CAR WASH YESTERDAY AND AFTER THE WASH FINISHED I PULLED OUT OF STALL WITH HARDLY ANY BRAKES.I WAS NOT ABLE TO PUMP THEM AND HAD TO TAKE MY CAR INTO A MECHANIC THE BRAKE ACTUATOR WAS OUT AND THE CAR IS UNDRIVABLE.THE PRICE FOR THE PART ALONE IS OVER 2500.00 I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT IS WAS A RECALLED ITEM BUT NOT FOR THE YR OF MY CAR. IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN TRAFFIC OR AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED I KNOW I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND I COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE.

THREE WEEKS AGO THE BRAKES FAILED AT A STOP LIGHT ON A CITY STREET AND THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS CAME ON IN THE DASH. THE BRAKE FLUID APPEARED TO BE LOW SO WE OPENED A NEW BOTTLE OF FLUID AND FILLED THE RESERVOIR WHICH SEEMED TO TEMPORARILY REMEDY PROBLEM AND NOTHING COULD BE DIAGNOSED BECAUSE NO LIGHTS WERE ON IN DASH. THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN WITH THE BRAKES FAILING AND THE DASH LIGHTS COMING ON WHILE AT A RED LIGHT ON A CITY STREET. WE HAD TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED AND WERE TOLD IT WAS THE MASTER CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, BOOSTER PUMP ETC. AND WASN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AT $6400. THE CAR HAS 82,925 MILES AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED.

I'VE HAD MY PRIUS FROM 4-14 TO THE PRESENT 2016. I KEEP HAVING ISSUES WITH THE DEALERSHIP I TAKE IT TO FOR REPAIRS. [XXX] IN LA CRESCENTA CA. AFTER MENTIONING AND DESCRIBING ISSUES, THE STAFF THERE SAYS THAT UNLESS THE DASH LIGHTS UP WITH A MESSAGE AND GIVES A CODE, THEY CANT FIX IT. SO IN ORDER FOR THEM TO LOOK INTO IT ANY FURTHER THAN ME TELLING THEM DASH LIGHT IS NEC. I'VE TOLD THEM ABOUT THE AC NOISE FROM THE FIRST SAY I TOOK THE CAR IN TO GET SERVICES AT 33K. THEY SAY THEY DON'T HEAR OR SEE ANYTHING. MY AC COMPRESSOR SOUNDS LIKE ITS GOING TO EXPLODE WHEN AC IS ON. BRAKES HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DIFF. TO EXPLAIN BECAUSE OF TERMINOLOGY. THEY SEEM TO LOSE THEIR POWER WHEN BEING PRESSED AND ABS SEEMS TO MALFUNCTION?? SO THEY DRIVE IT AND TELL ME ITS NOTHING I NEED TO WORRY ABOUT AND WILL BE FIXED WHEN CHANGED. CHANGE BRAKES AND THE PROB PERSISTS. NOT ONLY ABS BUT FIRESTONE SAYS MY HARDWARE HAS ISSUES AS WELL. I BRING IT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE STAFF AND NOTHING SEEMS TO GET DONE ABOUT IT... MY ODO. SPEEDOM IS/WAS OFF +2 MPH. MY WEATHER SEALS HAVE BEEN STRIPPED AND RIPPED OFF THE VEHICLE WHICH NOW CAUSES WATER LEAKS FROM EVERY CREVICE.. AND THE BIGGEST TWO OF ALL MY COMPLAINTS ARE 1- HYBRID BATT. FAN NEVER WORKED AND I WASN'T TOLD...HYB BATT HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY (DRAINS WAY TOO FAST WHEN STOPPED AT A LIGHT OR IN TRAFF) ALONG WITH THE HEAT CREATED BY THE BATT AND THE ENGINE THAT FILL UP THE CABIN AND WILL HAVE THE TEMP RAISED UPWARDS OF 90+ ON A 75 DEG DAY. 2- THE ECU'S IPM'S (OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT) HAS NOT BEEN CALIB. OR UPDATED. EVEN RECEIVED COVERAGE STICKERS FROM TOY HEADQUARTERS STATING FULL COVERAGE IF A.B.C. (LISTING OF PROBLEMS OR MALFUNCTIONS) I DESCRIBE THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS TO THEM AND GET THE SAME RESPONSE"NO CODE, NO FIX" HELP AND PS I JUST CHECKED THE VIN ONLINE 4MY VEH & IT SAYS A DIFF PACKAGE W/A BUNCH OF EXTRAS THAT I NEVER GOT UPON PURCHASE???_HMMM?? WHEN I'M BRAKING AND SLOWING DOWN GRADUALLY, AS WHEN APPROACHING A RED LIGHT, THE BRAKES MOMENTARILY STOP WORKING AND THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT SURGES FORWARD IF IT HITS A LOW-TRACTION SURFACE LIKE A POTHOLE OR MANHOLE COVER OR WET SPOT. I SAW THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS IN 2010, BUT 2011 MODEL CONSISTENTLY DOES IT AND HAS CAUSED ME AND MY FRIEND TO NEARLY REAR-END OTHER CARS WHEN DRIVING MY CAR. APPARENTLY, IT PERTAINS TO THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM BEING TURNED OFF WHEN THE ABS ENGAGES, LEAVING ONLY FRICTION BRAKES. THIS HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK ON THE WET ROADS WHERE I LIVE (NEAR SEATTLE, WASHINGTON). THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 2011 BUT I'M COMPLAINING NOW BECAUSE MY FRIEND BORROWED IT AND ALMOST REAR-ENDED SOMEONE AND PUSHED ME TO REPORT IT. *TR

THE PRIUS HAS A PROBLEM WHEN BRAKING OVER BROKEN PAVEMENT OR POTHOLES. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND THE CAR ENTERS AN AREA OF THE ROAD WHERE THERE IS UNEVEN GROUND. THE BRAKES SEEM TO NOT WORK FOR A SECOND EVEN IF THERE IS STEADY PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS PROBLEM CAUSES QUITE A STARTLE TO THE CAR'S DRIVER. THIS IS ESPECIALLY A CONCERN TO US WHEN THIS HAPPENS AT A CROSSWALK. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM. TOYOTA OF AMERICA HAS BEEN CONTACTED TWICE, I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP BUT NO FIX IS AVAILABLE.

BRAKES DISENGAGE MOMENTARILY WHEN BRAKING ON A BUMPY ROADWAY. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN MULTIPLE TIMES. IT FEELS LIKE THE ABS SYSTEM RELEASES THE BRAKES AND THEN REAPPLIES BRAKING. LUCKILY, I HAVE NOT HAD VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME.

EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE - IT CAN BE MONTHS BETWEEN EVENTS - OUR PRIUS MOMENTARILY SLAMS ON THE BRAKES WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHILE NOTHING ELSE IS GOING ON. WE KNOW IT'S NOT OPERATOR ERROR. IT'S HAPPENED TO MY WIFE SEVERAL TIMES AND ME ONCE. WHEN IT HAPPENED TO ME I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT AHEAD ON A DRY, LIGHTLY TRAVELED DIVIDED HIGHWAY DURING THE DAY. EVERYTHING ON THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS UP, ALARMS GO OFF, THE CAR DECELERATES LIKE I SUDDENLY STOMPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THOUGH MY FOOT NEVER MOVED OFF OF THE GAS, IT LASTS FOR MAYBE A SECOND AND THEN THE CAR IS BACK TO NORMAL. IT'S THE SAME EACH TIME IT'S HAPPENED. LUCKILY EACH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WE HAVEN'T HAD ANYONE TAILGATING US. WE'VE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES. THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES THEY LOOKED AT US LIKE WE WERE LOONY. THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND WE GOT IT BACK WITH A MESSAGE THAT SAID THE TECHNICIAN CHECKED THE COMPUTER AND TEST DROVE IT FOR 20 MILES AND THE CAR WAS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. EXCEPT IT HAPPENED AGAIN. WE FINALLY CONVINCED THEM THAT THIS WAS MAYBE A LEGITIMATE ISSUE AND THEY SAID THEY BROUGHT IN A TOYOTA FIELD SPECIALIST WHO CHECKED THE CAR OUT AND THEY SAID THAT THE ISSUE WAS THE PCS WAVE RADAR SENSOR THAT WAS SLIGHTLY OUT OF ALIGNMENT DUE TO BODY DAMAGE (MY WIFE HAD HIT A SMALL DEER ABOUT A YEAR PRIOR TO THAT - DAMAGE WAS MINOR AND REPAIRED AT A LOCAL BODY SHOP). AFTER THEY REALIGNED THE SENSOR, THE CAR BEHAVED ITSELF FOR ABOUT FIVE MONTHS. UNTIL YESTERDAY WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN.

WHILE DRIVING AND BRAKING ON A BUMPY ROAD SURFACE, THE BRAKES WILL INITIALLY WORK, QUIT WORKING MOMENTARILY, THEN REENGAGE. THIS HAPPENS REGULARLY. I JUST TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, AND THEY SAY THE BRAKES ARE FINE AND THERE IS NO PROBLEM. THERE WAS A TOYOTA RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE ON 2010 MODELS. THERE ARE 3 ISSUES I AM HAVING WITH THIS PRIUS. THE BRAKES ARE THE FIRST PROBLEM. AS OTHERS HAVE STATED, I TOO HAVE THE SAME LURCHING FORWARD WHEN BRAKING OVER BUMBY OR ROUGH ROADS. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. SECOND, THE SUSPENSION IS CREAKING AND CRUNCHING WHEN MAKING TURNS AT LOW SPEEDS UNDER 20MPH. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE WHEELS ARE TURNED ALL THE WAY RIGHT AND ALL THE WAY LEFT. THIS CRUNCHING NOISE HAPPENS WHEN BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, MAKING U-TURNS, COMING TO A STOP ON AN INCLINE, AND BRAKING OVER SPEED BUMPS. I'VE HAD THE DEALER LOOK AT THIS FOR THE LAST YEAR WHEN I COME IN FOR SERVICE AND ONE TECH SAYS THEY CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT, ANOTHER TECH SAYS HE HEARS IT BUT CAN'T FIND THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM, THE SERVICE MGR. ALSO WENT ON A DRIVE WITH ME AND REPRODUCES THE NOISE CONCERN BUT THE TECHS COULDN'T FIND IT. MOST WERE SUGGESTING NEW FRONT SUSPENSION COMPONENTS-STRUTS, TOWERS, LINKS, ETC. I REPLACED THE TWO FRONT STRUTS AND ALL OF THE EXTRA COMPONENTS-THE NOISE CONCERN IS STILL THERE. I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS. THIRD ISSUE IS THE ICE-MOTOR. WHEN STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF, THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD AND MAKES A CREAKING SOUND. IT'S APPEARS THAT SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT. THE ENGINE SEEMS LIKE IT IS LOOSE. THE ENGINE ALSO MAKES RATTLING SOUND WHEN CRUISING LIGHTLY AT 15-25 MPH WITH THE ACCELERATOR PRESSED SLIGHTLY. THE SOUND IS COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE, UNDER THE DASHBOARD-GLOVE COMPARTMENT AREA. THIS IS A RATTLE SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I'VE HAD THIS LOOKED AT AS WELL AND THE DEALER STATES THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE IT. I HAVE RECORDED ALL SOUNDS RELATED TO THESE CONCERNS AND AM TAKING IT BACK TO THE DEALER THIS MONTH.

JUST WANT TO ADD TO THE LIST OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS CAR LUNGING FORWARD WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED, PRIMARILY WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVING OVER ROUGH TERRAIN BUT NOT ALWAYS. IT IS ALWAYS UNEXPECTED. I'VE HAD TO CHANGE THE WAY I DRIVE, BUT I'M NOT ALWAYS SURE I COULD STOP IT IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE. I'VE TAKEN THE CAR IN TO A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER TWICE TO LOOK AT IT. THEY EITHER CAN'T GET IT TO HAPPEN WHILE THEY HAVE THE CAR OR THEY SAY IT'S NORMAL. IT'S NOT NORMAL FOR ANY CAR I'VE EVER HAD IN TWENTY PLUS YEARS OF DRIVING. IT HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE AND MORE FREQUENT OVER THE COURSE OF THE THREE YEARS THAT I'VE HAD THE CAR.

TRACTION CONTROL AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING. TOOK IT TO TOYOTA WHO SAID CODES INDICATED FAILURE OF MASTER CYLINDER. COST OF REPAIR $3,400. I THINK THEY HAVE A DEFECTIVE PART PROBLEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A TYPICAL SUPERMARKET PARKING LOT DURING A NORMAL SUNNY DAY. THE VEHICLE STARTS NORMALLY AS THE BRAKES ARE DEPRESSED. AFTER PUTTING THE CAR IN REVERSE, THE BRAKE PEDAL PUSHED BACK AS THE VEHICLE STARTS TO BACK UP. THE BRAKE FELT VERY STIFF AND WOULD NOT DEPRESS UNTIL THE FOOT IS LIFTED AND RE-STEPPED ON IT. IT HAS HAPPENED ABOUT A DOZEN TIMES IN THE LAST 3.5 YEARS, NO SPECIFIC PLACE OR TIME. WAS NOT ABLE TO BE DUPLICATED AT THE DEALERSHIPS. THE DEALER SAID IT'S SAFETY FEATURE WHEN YOU STEP ON THE BRAKES TOO HARD, IT LOCKS UP AS IN A HAND BRAKE. HOWEVER, THE LOCKUP I EXPERIENCED IS DIFFERENT AND ONLY HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY DURING REVERSE WHERE THE BRAKES IS NOT STOPPING THE CAR FROM MOVING. SEEMS TO OCCUR MORE OFTEN ON SLOPED SURFACES THAN FLAT, BUT CANNOT DUPLICATE AS IT HAPPENS RANDOMLY, USUALLY WITH MULTIPLE PASSENGERS IN THE CAR. THIS CAN BE A REAL SAFETY HAZARD IF SOME ONE IS BEHIND THE VEHICLE.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2011 PRIUS DURING STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. SHE SAID THE CAR JUST TOOK OFF ON HER ON IT'S OWN SHE TRIED TO BRAKE BUT IT WOULDN'T STOP. IT CRASHED INTO THE MOTORHOME THAT I WAS DRIVING. THE AIR BAGS NEVER DEPLOYED. THE CAR WAS TOTALED DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE.

WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING BRAKING ABNORMALITIES FOR 1-2 MONTHS, AND WHEN OUR BRAKE MALFUNCTION LIGHT CAME ON WE HAD IT CHECKED OUT. INITIALLY, ABOUT 1 MONTH AGO, THE TOYOTA DEALER'S SERVICE DEPT. COULD NOT DETECT AN ISSUE, SO SIMPLY RESET THE COMPUTER. BUT, AGAIN, THE MALFUNCTION LIGHT RETURNED AND AGAIN, WE RETURNED THE CAR TO THE SERVICE DEPT. ON THIS OCCASION, THEY TOLD US THAT NITROGEN GAS HAS LEAKED FROM THE ACCUMULATOR INTO THE BRAKING SYSTEM. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THIS IS A SIMILAR PROBLEM EXPERIENCED BY 2010 PRIUS OWNERS. WE WOULD LOVE FOR TOYOTA TO FIX THIS ISSUE RATHER THAN US COVER THE $5000 FOR BRAKE SYSTEM REPLACEMENT.

THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS AT 2,500 MILES. WHILE APPLYING BRAKES ON A ROUGH ROAD OR WHEN CROSSING A POT HOLE, CRACKED ROAD, OR BRIDGE JOINT THE BRAKES FAIL MOMENTARILY ALLOWING THE CAR TO LURCH FORWARD. IT HIS HAPPENS REGARDLESS OF THE SPEED. I COULD BE TRAVELING AT 15 OR 50 MPH AND THE BRAKES WILL FAIL AND LURCH FORWARD. I PURCHASED THE PRIUS NEW IN 2011 AND HAVE TOLD THE SERVICE FOLKS AT TOYOTA ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THEY LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND ARE NOT ABLE TO FIND A REASON FOR THIS BRAKE FAILURE. THIS IS DANGEROUS. I HAVE TO MAKE SURE I START BRAKING A GOOD DISTANCE FROM A CAR IN FRONT OF ME AS I AM AFRAID THIS DEFECT WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. IF I HAVE TO BRAKE SUDDENLY AND AM DRIVING OVER ANY ROAD THAT IS NOT SMOOTH MY BRAKES FAIL AND LURCH FORWARD. HOW MANY PEOPLE NEED TO GET INJURED OR DIE BEFORE TOYOTA FIXES THIS DEFECT?

I PURCHASED THE PRIUS NEW IN 2011 AND HAVE TOLD THE SERVICE FOLKS AT TOYOTA ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THEY ALWAYS TELL ME IT?S NORMAL FOR A PRIUS WITHOUT NOTING ANYTHING IN MY FILE. I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT THE PRIUS BRAKE DESIGN IS FAULTY AND THE NHTSA SHOULD BE INVESTIGATING! *TR

THE PRIUS FAILED TO STOP WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED; INSTEAD THE CAR DID A LURCH WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AND THEN ACCELERATED FORWARD CAUSING A 4 CAR COLLISION; LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED. MADE TOYOTA AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, WHEN THEY INVESTIGATED THEY OF COURSE FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE SYSTEM. *TR

THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM IN THIS CAR IS OVERLY SENSITIVE. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN OFTEN, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED ENOUGH OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS THAT I CAN CLEARLY PREDICT WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. IF YOU ARE SLOWING DOWN MODERATELY SAY FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT, ON A DRY ROAD, BUT ONE THAT IS IN NEED OF REPAVING (NO POT HOLES, BUT JUST A ROUGH SURFACE), AND IF YOU ARE ON A ROAD THAT IS GOING SLIGHTLY DOWNHILL, THE ABS BRAKING SYSTEM KICKS IN WITHOUT A NEED. THIS CAUSES YOUR FOOT TO SINK BRIEFLY TO THE FLOOR (ON THE BRAKE PEDAL) AND GIVE THE FEELING OF A LOSS OF BRAKING FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE BRAKE PADS ARE FINE (EVEN WITH SUCH HIGH MILEAGE, I STILL HAVE OVER 70% OF THE ORIGINAL BRAKE PADS LEFT). I HAVE BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF MY TOYOTA DEALER, WHO SAYS EVERYTHING IS FINE. THE SCENARIO DESCRIBED ABOVE MIGHT ONLY HAPPEN ONCE EVERY FEW WEEKS, BUT BOTH MY WIFE AND I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN NUMEROUS TIMES. I BELIEVE IT IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE, PERHAPS RELATED TO OVERLY SENSITIVE SENSORS, PERHAPS IN THE REAR OF THE CAR. *TR

WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES WHILE GOING OVER A POTHOLE OR CURB, THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE SO FAR AND I'VE ONLY OWNED THE CAR FOR A FEW MONTHS. *TR
Mileage: 31,000
NUMEROUS TIMES WHEN TRYING TO STOP, THE VEHICLE WOULD LOSS CONTROL OF THE BRAKING WHEN GOING OVER EVEN THE SMALLEST OF BUMPS. A FEW TIMES EVEN THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WOULD LUMINATE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. IT ALSO APPEARED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE JUST SLIGHTLY DURING THIS BRAKING RATHER THAN SLOWING DOWN. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE HOW THE VEHICLE FELT, IS AS IF IT WAS "HYDROPLANING", THERE WAS NOT CONTROL OVER THE STEERING OR BRAKING. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE GOES OVER ANY TYPE OF BUMPS, OR POTHOLES. I HAVE CHILDREN AND THIS IS DEFINITELY A CONCERN. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS "NORMAL", HOWEVER I FEAR IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY CONCERN. *TR

WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SLOT IN A PARKING LOT, WHICH WAS ON A SLOPE, I APPLIED THE FOOT BRAKE WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE WHATSOEVER. THE VEHICLE GAINED ENOUGH SPEED TO JUMP THE SMALL STOP-CURB AND HIT A CONCRETE WALL NEXT TO IT. THE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS JUST OVER $4000. I THOUGHT I HAD MISSED THE PEDAL. ON JUNE 12TH AND 15TH, I HAD TWO MORE INCIDENTS OF THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WHILE EITHER AT SLOW SPEED OR STOPPED. MY DEALER SAYS IT WAS A PROBLEM ON THE 2010, BUT HE HAS NOT SEEN IT ON A 2011. MY WIFE NOW REFUSES TO DRIVE THE CAR. *TR

THE PRIUS BRAKES DO NOT WORK WELL UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. WHEN I SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE AND AM OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT OR A POTHOLE, THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT LURCHES FORWARD FOR A SPLIT SECOND. MY REACTION IS ONE OF PANIC AND TO PRESS HARDER ON THE BRAKES. MY WIFE AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS FOUR TIMES SINCE WE HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE. WE FEEL VERY UNSURE OF THE BRAKES AND WORRY FOR BICYCLISTS OR PEDESTRIANS. *TR

FROM THE VERY START OF MY OWNER SHIP OF A NEW TOYOTA PRIUS, THE CAR STARTED LUNGING WHEN I WOULD TRY TO STOP. IT HAS CONTINUED TO DO SO AND I FINALLY ASKED A FRIEND WHO ALSO HAS A PRIUS IF SHE HAS THAT PROBLEM TOO AND SHE DOES. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO BUT I FEAR THE SAFETY OF A CAR THAT LUNGES WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO BRAKE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. UPDATED 11/24/2014 *JS

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE BRAKING ON AN INCLINE, AN ABNORMAL METAL-ON-METAL NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE VEHICLE. THE NOISE WOULD BECOME LOUDER WHEN THERE WAS ONLY ONE OCCUPANT IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FIVES TIMES HOWEVER, THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE OR DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE BRAKES TOTAL DISENGAGE WHEN APPLIED ON BUMPY ROADS THEN WORK AGAIN AFTER GETTING TO A SMOOTH SURFACE. I REPORTED THIS TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE NEW CAR OWNER MEETING AT TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD THAT I JUST HAVE TO GET USE TO ANTILOCK BRAKES. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN INTO AN ACCIDENT YET BUT I HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS ALMOST HITTING CARS IN FRONT OF ME ON BUMPY ROADS. HAS THERE BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM? *TR

MY CAR HESITATES TO STOP OR SLOW DOWN WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED DRIVING OVER A POTHOLE, SLICK SURFACE, METAL ROAD COVER OR A MANHOLE. INSTEAD OF SLOWING/STOPPING, THE CAR SEEMS TO EJECT FORWARD. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT MY CAR AND DROVE WITH A SERVICE TECH AND HE SAID IN OVER 20 YEARS OF HIS EXPERIENCE, HE'S NEVER SEEN THIS. I TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT THIS CAR (AND TECHNOLOGY WITH REGENERATIVE BRAKING) IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD, BUT HE DIDN'T SEEM TO BUY MY COMPLAINT, NOR WERE WE ABLE TO REPRODUCE THIS ISSUE WHEN I DROVE WITH A TECHNICIAN AROUND THE BLOCK. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN DECEMBER OF 2013, WITH TWO DIFFERENT DRIVERS, THE BRAKES ON OUR 2011 MODEL YEAR PRIUS (PURCHASED NEW IN FEBRUARY 2012), FAILED TO ENGAGE. THE FIRST TIME OCCURRED WHEN I WAS DRIVING (WITH ONE OF MY TEENAGERS IN THE CAR WITH ME), AND THE SECOND TIME OCCURRED WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR ALONE. IN BOTH INSTANCE WE PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE BRAKES FAILED TO RESPOND AT ALL. ALTHOUGH IT IS WINTER, THE ROADS WERE CLEAR, AND THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN AT ALL WHEN THE BRAKES WERE PRESSED / APPLIED. INTERESTINGLY, AFTER 30 - 60 SECONDS, THE BRAKE FUNCTION RESTORED ITSELF. SINCE DECEMBER THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE SHOP AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE WE PURCHASED THE CAR. THE SHOP HAS BEEN UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. ADDITIONALLY, THE SHOP INDICATED THEY CONTACTED TOYOTA MECHANICS AND SERVICE SUPPORT STAFF TO HELP IDENTIFY AND FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT TOYOTA CLAIMED THEY NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A PROBLEM OR ANYTHING LIKE IT. MOREOVER, TOYOTA REFUSES TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS OR CHANGE ANY PARTS (EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY). YET, THIS PAST WEDNESDAY (FEBRUARY 12, 2014), TOYOTA ANNOUNCED A RECALL ON RAV4'S AND OTHER MODELS FOR A SOFTWARE PROBLEM THAT CAUSES THE ANTI-BRAKES TO INTERMITTENTLY TURN OFF. THIS IS PARTICULARLY TROUBLING, GIVEN TOYOTA'S CLAIM THAT THEY NEVER HEARD OF ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO FIX. FURTHER, TOYOTA ANNOUNCED A RECALL ON THE PRIUS ITSELF, FOR A SOFTWARE PROBLEM THAT MIGHT CAUSE THE CAR TO TURN OFF COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING. CLEARLY, TOYOTA HAS A PROBLEM WITH ITS SOFTWARE IN A NUMBER OF VEHICLES. AT THIS POINT, ALL I HAVE RECEIVED IS CORPORATE DOUBLE TALK, AND I URGE THE NHTSA TO PURSUE THIS MATTER AS VIGOROUSLY AS POSSIBLE. *TR

CAR LURCHES FORWARD WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED ON BUMPY OR UNEVEN SURFACES, AS WELL AS SLIPPERY SURFACES SUCH AS METAL PLATES THAT YOU SOMETIMES FIND COVERING CITY STREETS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. ON ICE, WHEN APPLIED FORCEFULLY, NO BRAKING ACTION OCCURS WHATSOEVER, EVEN WHEN PUMPED OR RELEASE AND REAPPLIED. IN JAN 2013, CAR SLID MORE THAN 150' ON A LIGHTLY SNOWY ROAD INTO A DITCH. MY SENSE IS ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ARE DEFECTIVE, BUT IT COULD BE SOME OTHER COMPUTER OVERRIDE THAT KICKS IN. WHEN STOPPING FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT ON A BUMPY ROAD, OR OVER ONE OF THOSE CONSTRUCTION PLATES, IT'S SCARY, AND I FEEL LUCKY I HAVEN'T HIT ANYONE. *TR

MY SON WAS DRIVING MY PRIUS 2011 - I WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. WE WERE SITTING AT A RED LIGHT AND HE HAD HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE. SUDDENLY THE CAR SURGED AHEAD ALTHOUGH MY SON STILL HAD HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE. IMMEDIATELY LIGHTS CAME UP ON THE DASH - BRAKE, ABS? AND PICTURE OF A CAR WITH SKID MARKS. THE BRAKES WERE THEN SPONGY, THERE SOMETIMES AND THEN NOT. I HAVE IT IN THE TOYOTA SHOP NOW AND THE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED TO BE $4,440. I DID NOT BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. WE MET WITH THE DEALER AND THEY WERE NO HELP. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY OFFERED ME $1,500.00 AFTER I PAY THE BILL AND TOLD ME IT COULD TAKE UP TO 8 WEEKS FOR ME TO RECEIVE PAYMENT. *TR

LOVE MY PRIUS UNTIL I STARTED TO BECOME SCARED DAILY BY THE UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO THE CAR'S TENDENCY TO LURCH FORWARD WHILE BRAKING OVER BUMPY GROUND OR POTHOLES WHEN COMING TO A STOP OR SLOWING DOWN TO TURN. IT'S RATHER STARTLING AND FORTUNATELY HAS NOT CAUSED AN ACCIDENT YET FOR NO OTHER CAR HAS BEEN AROUND WHEN THIS HAPPENS. A DIFFERENT STORY WITH THE OTHER MORE SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM WHEN NEEDING TO COME TO AN IMMEDIATE STOP DUE TO SUDDEN STOPPING OF THE CAR IN FRONT. ABOUT A MONTH AGO, I EXPERIENCED THE "NO BRAKE" ISSUE WHEN SUDDENLY NEEDING TO PRESS HARD ON THE BRAKE FOR A STOPPED CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I HAD PLENTY OF DISTANCE FOR STOPPING BUT BECAUSE OF THE "NO BRAKE" ISSUE HAD TO STEER OFF TO THE SIDE TO MISS THE CAR. SHOCKED AND CONFUSED AT WHAT HAPPENED, THOUGHT MAYBE I DID SOMETHING WRONG BY NOT PUMPING THE BRAKE. THEN TWO DAYS AGO, I WAS SITTING AT A RED LIGHT WHEN IT TURNED GREEN, TRAFFIC STARTED MOVING BUT THEN SUDDENLY STOPPED FOR AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE TO GO THROUGH THE INTERCEPTION. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE HARD AND JUST KEPT MOVING RIGHT INTO THE REAR OF THE TRUCK IN FRONT. I NOW HAVE ABOUT $1,800 OF DAMAGES FOR THE TRUCK (NO DAMAGE CAUSED TO IT) HAD AN HITCH WHICH PUNCTURED MY BUMPER AND BENT THE AIR CONDENSER. I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO FIX IT FOR IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. WHEN I DECIDE WHAT'S MY NEXT SAFE CAR TO PURCHASE, I WILL HAVE IT FIXED AND TRADE IT IN FOR IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE FOR I'M NOW SCARED TO DRIVE IT. THE DEALERSHIP REPLY TO MY CONCERN IS THE SAME AS WITH EVERYONE ELSE'S COMPLAINT AND REVIEW I HAVE READ, THIS IS HOW THE BRAKE SYSTEM WORKS AND NO ERROR. THEY DO NOT WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH CREATES UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS. FORTUNATELY IT WAS A TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME THIS TIME. BUT WHAT IF IT'S A PERSON WALKING ACROSS THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME NEXT TIME?? *TR

IN JANUARY 2012, I PURCHASED A NEW 2011 PRIUS III BECAUSE I COMMUTE ROUGHLY 90 MILES PER DAY BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL. THINKING THIS WAS THE OPTIMAL VEHICLE I DIDN'T THINK TWICE WHEN SIGNING ON THE LINE. THIS WAS MY FIRST NEW VEHICLE, AND TO BE HONEST I HAD HEARD NOTHING BUT GREAT THINGS ABOUT TOYOTA & THOUGHT I WAS GOING CRAZY WHEN I STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH MY BRAKES. PRIOR TO OWNING THIS VEHICLE I OWN A SUBARU IMPREZA SPORT THAT WE HAD TRADED DUE TO POOR MAINTENANCE FROM THE DEALERSHIP, WHO DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO BALANCE THE AWD SYSTEM & PUT A HOLE IN MY BRAKE LINE. BEING THE MY PRIOR CAR HAD BRAKE ISSUES I DENIED THE FACT THAT MY BRAND NEW CAR COULD HAVE THEM AS WELL. THE ISSUE IS THAT ANYTIME YOU HIT ICE, POT HOLES, GRAVEL ROAD, WET ROADS, BUMPY ROADS ETC, YOU LOSE CONTROL OF THE BRAKES. IT FEELS AS IF THEY SLIP/ACCELERATE AND LEAVE YOU IN A MOMENT OF PANIC BECAUSE IT'S NOT ALWAYS A SITUATION YOU CAN AVOID. MY CAR HAS BEEN TO THE SHOP THREE TIMES OVER THE ISSUE WITH A COMPLAINT ON MY BRAKING SYSTEM, AND APPARENTLY THIS IS A VERY KNOWN PROBLEM FROM TOYOTA. IT TOOK MY DEALERSHIP 3 COMPLAINTS BEFORE THEY CONSULTED THEIR PRIUS TECH, AND BASICALLY PRINTED OFF A PAPER WITH EVERY COMPLAINT I LISTED ABOVE WITH NO SOLUTION. THEY TOLD US TO CALL THE TOYOTA CARE NUMBER, WHICH HAS BEEN A PROBLEM IN ITSELF. WHEN MY FATHER SPOKE TO THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE ON WEDNESDAY THEY SAID THEY HAD TO ALLOW THEM THREE DAYS TO ILLICIT A RESPONSE TO THE COMPLAINT. KEEP I'M MIND THAT THE THREE DAYS FALLS ONTO A SATURDAY, AND THEY THEREFORE WON'T OWE US A RESPONSE UNTIL MONDAY, QUITE FRANKLY THEY WON'T HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE, AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO LET THEIR CONSUMERS DRIVE AROUND WITH BRAKE ISSUES THAT HAVE PUT NOT ONLY ME BUT OTHERS AS WELL INTO NUMEROUS DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATIONS.

WHILE DRIVING AT A SLOW SPEED, THE TRACTION CONTROL, BRAKE AND ABS FAILURE LIGHTS CAME ON. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITHOUT ACTUATING THE ABS SYSTEM. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE USING THE SERVICE BRAKES. SINCE I WAS TRAVELING AT A LOW SPEED, I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND COME TO A FULL STOP USING THE PARKING BRAKE. NOW THE VEHICLE IS PARKED AND UNDRIVEABLE. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER REQUESTING SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE A BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER OR HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER IN STOCK. I CHECKED A SECOND DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT YOU CAN ONLY GET THE TWO UNITS TOGETHER AND THAT THEY WERE ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER WITH NO ETA. SINCE PURCHASE, I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE ISSUE THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE REPORTING WHERE THE BRAKES RELEASE OVER ROUGH ROAD SURFACES AND THE VEHICLE FEELS AS IF ITS ACCELERATING. IF YOU RELEASE AND REAPPLY THE BRAKES IT WOULD STOP. LIKE OTHERS, I DISMISSED THIS AS A PECULIAR DYNAMIC OF THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER I AM NOW CONVINCED THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW IN THIS BRAKING SYSTEM WHICH REQUIRES A DEEPER INVESTIGATION. I HAVE BEEN IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND I CAN ATTEST THAT IT IS NOT NORMAL TO HAVE A TOTAL LOSS OF YOUR BRAKING SYSTEM LIKE THIS, ESPECIALLY IN A WELL MAINTAINED VEHICLE THAT IS RELATIVELY NEW AND HAVE LOW MILEAGE. THIS VEHICLE IS NOW PARKED AND AVAILABLE FOR YOUR INSPECTION IF NEEDED. *TR

VEHICLE LOSES BRAKING FUNCTION WHILE TRAVELING OVER POTHOLES, RECESSED MANHOLE COVERS, AND ALL OTHER TYPES OF ROUGH ROAD SURFACES. BRAKING FUNCTION IS DELAYED AND DOES NOT RETURN TO PREVIOUS POWER/BRAKING STRENGTH AFTER TRAVERSING THE OBSTACLE; THIS RESULTS IN THE NEED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL FURTHER TO RE-ENGAGE ENOUGH BRAKING FUNCTION TO STOP THE VEHICLE SAFELY. SERIOUS CONCERN IS THAT IF THE VEHICLE IS UNDER HARD BRAKING AT THE TIME OF THE EVENT WILL THERE BE ENOUGH TRAVEL LEFT IN THE BRAKE PEDAL TO REENGAGE THE BRAKES ENOUGH TO STOP. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS REGULARLY, ONE OR MORE TIMES PER MONTH, SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR. UP UNTIL NOW MOST OCCURRENCES HAVE BEEN JUST A MINOR ANNOYANCE. I RESEARCHED THE PHENOMENON ON THE WEB AND MANY JUST WRITE IT OFF AS A NUISANCE / MINOR QUIRK OF THE VEHICLE SO I ACCEPTED THAT OPINION AND CONTINUED ON ENJOYING THE CAR. THAT IS UNTIL MAY 21, 2013 WHEN UNDER HARD BRAKING (30-35MPH DRIVING SPEED THEN HEAVY BRAKING TO 0MPH) THE VEHICLE TRAVELED OVER A RECESSED MANHOLE COVER AND IT FELT LIKE IT FULLY LOST ALL OF ITS BRAKING POWER AND NEARLY SENT ME INTO THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE STOPPING HARD AHEAD OF ME. I HAD TO FLOOR THE BRAKES BEFORE I FELT ANY BRAKING POWER RETURN AFTER THE BUMP. THIS ISSUE WILL LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT IF IT HAS NOT ALREADY. PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON IT. *TR

I WAS APPLYING MY BRAKES AS I WAS GOING DOWN A SLIGHT INCLINE OVER A BRIDGE THAT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION SO THE ROAD IS BUMPY. THE CAR ACTED LIKE THE GAS WAS APPLIED INSTEAD OF THE BRAKES. IT LURCHED FORWARD A LITTLE BEFORE THE BRAKES FULLY ENGAGED. *TR

I HAVE EXPERIENCED BRAKE ISSUES WITH MY 2011 PRIUS MODEL SINCE I LEASED THE CAR IN DECEMBER 2011. WHEN I AM TRAVELING AT LOW SPEEDS AND I TRY TO BREAK GOING DOWN HILL AND /OR BREAK OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD, THE CAR ACCELERATES PRIOR TO FULLY STOPPING. THIS HAS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES SINCE I LEASED THE VEHICLE. IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHILE I TRAVEL AT LOWER SPEEDS AND THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD AS I HIT THE BREAKS. I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT WAS EXPERIENCED WITH 2010 MODELS OF THE PRIUS AND APPEARS TO BE ANOTHER ACCELERATION ISSUE WITH TOYOTA MODELS IN GENERAL. WHILE THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS ON THE 2011 PRIUS FOR DEFICIENT AIRBAGS, THIS IS AN EQUALLY CONCERNING FAULT IN THE CAR THAT SHOULD BE REVIEWED. *TR

CAR WAS OFF AND PARKED. WHEN I ENTERED THE VEHICLE TO TURN THE CAR ON, I HELD THE BRAKE AND PRESSED THE POWER BUTTON IN ORDER TO START THE CAR. AND WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE, I SHIFTED THE CAR INTO REVERSE TO PULL OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT. AS SOON AS THE CAR WAS SHIFTED INTO REVERSE, THE CAR MOVED BACKWARDS WITH MY FOOT FULLY PRESSED ON THE BRAKE. THE CAR FELT LIKE THE BRAKES WERE NOT ENGAGED. I LOOKED DOWN TO MAKE SURE I WAS PRESSING ON THE BRAKE, AND THE BRAKE WAS COMPLETELY DEPRESSED. I COULD EVEN FEEL THE HILL ASSIST THRESHOLD BUT THE BRAKES WERE NOT ENGAGING. IN A PANIC I PRESSED THE "P" (PARK) BUTTON TO TRY TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE ROCKED BACK AND FORTH AS IF THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN THE "P" BUTTON WAS PRESSED. I GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE TO SEE IF I WAS ON A POTHOLE OR HILL, ANYTHING TO EXPLAIN THE MOVE, BUT NOTHING WAS THERE, COMPLETELY FLAT ROAD. THIS HAS HAPPEN QUITE A FEW TIMES WHEN AT A PARK AND I HAD TO CONTACT CDSP OVER ELECTRONIC ISSUES OVER THIS VEHICLE. I AM NO LONGER GOING TO CONTINUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR

I AM AN EXCELLENT DRIVER. I PURCHASED THIS PRIUS IN THE SUMMER OF 2011. WE (MY WIFE AND YOUNG DAUGHTER) WERE PROCEEDING ON JUANITA DRIVE N.E. IN KIRKLAND, WA. MY WIFE AND I AGREE THAT OUR SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 30-33 MPH AND THAT THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 3+ CAR LENGTHS BETWEEN US AND THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF US. THE WEATHER WAS DRY AND SUNNY. SUDDENLY, A VEHICLE THREE VEHICLES AHEAD OF US STOPPED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, AND THE TWO VEHICLES BEHIND IT WERE ABLE TO STOP. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED MY BRAKES TO THE FLOOR AS SOON AS I OBSERVED THE STOPPED VEHICLE AHEAD. I FELT NO RESPONSE - NO GRIPPING OF THE BRAKES OR GRIPPING OF THE WHEELS TO THE ROAD, NO SQUEALING, NO SKIDDING, NO SENSE OF THE BRAKES SLOWING THE VEHICLE IN THE THREE SECONDS I APPLIED THEM. DUE TO VEHICLES IN THE OPPOSING LANE, A NARROW ROAD AND NO SHOULDER (A DITCH WITH TELEPHONE POLES ON THE RIGHT), I WAS FORCED TO DESIGN THE LEAST HARMFUL IMPACT - MY FRONT RIGHT CORNER TO THE REAR LEFT CORNER OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. THE IMPACT TORE OPEN THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, SHATTERING THE WINDSHIELD NEXT TO MY WIFE AND CAUSING HER LEGS TO FLY UP AND STRIKE THE DASHBOARD, INJURING HER LEGS IN SEVERAL PLACES. HER AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. MY 7-YEAR-OLD WAS IN HER CAR SEAT IN THE BACK SEAT. THE LARGER SPLIT BACK WAS BEHIND HER. THE BACK BECAME UNHINGED AT IMPACT AND FLIPPED FORWARD, FORCING MY DAUGHTER'S UPPER BODY FORWARD. SHE SUSTAINED MINOR FACIAL INJURIES. WHILE IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE AIRBAG NON-DEPLOYMENT WAS APPROPRIATE (I AM NOT CERTAIN OF THIS), THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT THE BRAKING WAS SOFT, SQUISHY, NON-EXISTENT, AND THE BACK SEAT SHOULD NOT HAVE BECOME UNHINGED. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON A ROUGH ROAD SURFACE AND APPLYING THE BRAKES THE CAR LOST ITS BRAKES OR THE POWER TO THE BRAKES AND SURGE FORWARD. THERE WAS A FEELING THAT THE ABS HAD ENGAGED THAN DISENGAGED LEAVING THE CAR WITH NO BRAKES. NORMALLY THE BRAKES ARE VERY CONSISTENT, THEY SLOW AND STOP THE CAR QUICKLY AND SAFELY, HOWEVER WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED WHILE RIDING ON ROUGH ROADS THEY BECOME VERY INCONSISTENT AND UNRELIABLE. IT FEELS THAT THE BRAKES STOP FUNCTIONING, BRAKING DISTANCE BECOMES LONGER AS DOES THE TIME REQUIRED TO STOP THE CAR. I FIRST NOTICED THIS CONDITION WHILE BRAKING ON A ROUGH ROAD AT ABOUT 30 MPH. THE CONDITION NOW OCCURS NOT ONLY WHEN DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS (PAVED ROADS WITH POTHOLES/POTHOLE REPAIRS) BUT ALSO ON WET/SLICK ROADS. THIS CONDITION IS INTERMITTENT BUT IS OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY AND AT ANY SPEED, ROAD SURFACE AND WEATHER CONDITION. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL IN REPLICATING THE CONDITION BY DRIVING THE CAR OVER ROUGH ROADS AND APPLYING THE BRAKES. THEY TELL ME THAT UNLESS THEY CAN EXPERIENCE THE CONDITION (SEE FOR THEMSELVES) THEY CAN NOT DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE CONDITION. TOYOTA CORPORATE TELL ME THEY STAND BEHIND THE DEALERSHIP AND CAN DO NOTHING. *TR

WE PURCHASED A 10 MONTH OLD TOYOTA PRIUS ON MARCH 16ND 2012 WITH ONLY 1367 MILES. THE PRIOR OWNER WHO WAS LEASING THIS CAR RETURNED THE CAR DUE TO MILEAGE INCONSISTENCY..... ON OCT 5TH 2012, I WAS DRIVING ON SUNNY DRY DAY AT 22MPH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME SLOWED DOWN. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE TO SLOWDOWN BUT THE CAR DID NOT STOP. WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE IT DID NOT RESPOND IMMEDIATELY, I APPLIED COMPLETE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE HOWEVER THE CAR STILL DID NOT SLOW DOWN ENOUGH AND I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. PER THE REPORT FROM TOYOTA THE SPEED WENT DOWN FROM 22MPH TO 5MPH AT THE TIME OF THE IMPACT. I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TOYOTA REPORT THAT I ONLY STEPPED ON THE BRAKE FOR 2 SECONDS AS IT WAS MUCH MORE... BEFORE THE ACCIDENT THE BRAKE WAS MUCH HARDER AND LESS FORCEFUL PRESSURE MADE THE CAR STOP AFTER THE ACCIDENT THE BRAKE FEELS SOFTER AND MORE PRESSURE IS NEEDED TO MAKE THE BRAKE WORK. THIS IS AN ALMOST BRAND NEW CAR WITH 7K MILES ON IT HOWEVER I DO FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR ANYMORE AFTER THIS ACCIDENT AND I FEAR FOR MY LIFE AND PUBLIC SAFETY. WHAT WILL HAPPEN I DRIVE ON A HIGHWAY AT 60MPH AND THE BRAKE WILL NOT WORK?? TOYOTA DENIES ANY TECHNICAL ERROR WITH THE CAR AND BLAMES THE ACCIDENT ON ME. THERE ARE PLENTY OF REPORTS OF SIMILAR ACCIDENTS REPORTED BY CONSUMERS ON THIS SAME ISSUE HERE: HTTP://TOWNHALL-TALK.EDMUNDS.COM/DIRECT/VIEW/.F0DB60B. *TR

THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST INCIDENT, BUT THE MOST NOTICEABLE. WHEN BRAKING AND COMING TO A STOP, IF THE TIRES HIT A POTHOLE OR ANY KIND OF HOLE OR BUMP IN THE ROAD, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES SUDDENLY. TODAY, IT ACCELERATED AS I WAS BRAKING AND COMING TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT. MY BACK RIGHT TIRE WENT OVER A POTHOLE, AND THE CAR JUMPED AND ACCELERATED ABOUT 10 FEET. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME. *TR

ON APRIL 3 2012 WE DROVE OUR 2011 TOYOTA PRIUS TO A FULL AND COMPLETE STOP AT A STOP SIGN IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD. WHILE WE WERE STOPPED, THE CAR SURGED FORWARD APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. MY WIFE, WHO AS DRIVING LOOKED DOWN TO CHECK THAT HER FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. WHILE STARING AT HER FOOT SQUARELY ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR SURGED FORWARD AGAIN ABOUT 3 FEET. THE CAR THEN SURGED FORWARD AGAIN ABOUT ONE FOOT BEFORE STOPPING. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO CROSSING TRAFFIC, PEDESTRIANS OR ANY OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS. NO COLLISION OCCURRED AND NO ONE WAS HURT. WE CALLED TOYOTA CARE IMMEDIATELY AND THEY PROMPTLY PICKED UP THE CAR AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER LATER CALLED US AND INFORMED US THAT THEY HAD DIAGNOSED THE CAR AND THAT NO PROBLEM COULD BE FOUND. WE DISPUTED THAT WE WERE UNWILLING TO TAKE THE CAR BACK UNTIL A PROBLEM WAS FOUND AND THEY TOLD US THAT THEY HAD DONE EVERYTHING THEY COULD DO AND EVEN HAD DRIVEN THE CAR 10 MILES WITH NO INCIDENT. I INFORMED THEM THAT WE HAD DRIVEN THE CAR NEARLY 10,000 MILES AND IT HAPPENED ONCE. ONCE IS TOO MANY TIMES. THE DEALER TOLD US WE HAD TO TAKE THE CAR BACK. WE ASKED FOR A WRITTEN STATEMENT GUARANTEEING THE SAFETY OF THE CAR AND THAT THE ISSUE WOULD NOT OCCUR. THEY SAID THEY COULD OFFER NO WRITTEN STATEMENT, SO WE REFUSED TO TAKE THE CAR BACK WHAT FOLLOWED WAS ESSENTIALLY THE DEALER PASSING THE BUCK TO TOYOTA CORPORATE WHO BASICALLY TOLD US THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND THAT IF WE STILL HAD A PROBLEM WE COULD GO TO ARBITRATION. TOYOTA CORPORATE WAS NEITHER REASSURING NOR HELPFUL. WE ARE NOW IN ARBITRATION WITH TOYOTA. WE HAVE OUR ARBITRATION HEARING TODAY. IT HAS NOW BEEN NEARLY TWO MONTHS SINCE WE HAVE HAD THE CAR, YET WE ARE STILL PAYING THE LEASE AND INSURANCE. WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR MONEY, WE ONLY WANT ASSURANCE AND SAFETY FOR OUR FAMILY. *TR

WHEN I PUSH ON THE BRAKES AND I HAPPEN TO GO OVER A BUMP OR A POT HOLE, MY PRIUS SPEEDS UP. IT ACCELERATES WHEN I TRY TO DECELERATE. I HAVE TO PUSH HARDER ON THE BRAKES TO REALLY SLOW THE CAR DOWN. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS WHEN I'M DRIVING AT AROUND 40MILE/HR. I HAVE A 2011 TYPE III PRIUS. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS TOTAL BS BECAUSE AS SOON AS I GOT IT BACK FROM THEM I COULD REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM ON MY WAY BACK HOME. PLEASE ADVISE ME OF WHAT TO DO. NOTICED BRAKES BREAKING INTERMITTENTLY ABOUT A WEEK AFTER PURCHASE. DISMISSED IT BECAUSE OF WEATHER AND IT WAS A NEW CAR, THOUGHT IT WAS JUST DIFFERENT FEEL FROM MY LAST VEHICLE. I DON'T DRIVE OFTEN AVERAGING 10,000 MILES OR LESS PER YEAR, SO WHEN I NOTICED THIS PROBLEM REPEATING, AND ACTUALLY NEAR CAUSING AN ACCIDENT I GOT CONCERNED. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY, THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG, AND ON THE WAY HOME EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. THE INABILITY TO STOP COMPLETELY PRESENTS A HAZARD, ESPECIALLY WHEN THIS OCCURS UNDER NORMAL BRAKING CONDITIONS. IF THE DEALER CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM WHAT RECOURSES DO CONSUMERS HAVE? *TR
