Two days ago my car was driving perfectly on the highway. The oil pressure light turned on I turned off the highway immediately and put more oil in the car. At this point my car is consuming over a quart every week and I don't drive more than a couple of hundred miles every week. I've taken several longer trips with this car. I started the car back up after checking the oil level, started driving and the light didn't come back on. About 10 more miles down the road on the highway the oil pressure light the check engine light vsc light the four-wheel drive light appear. I go to an AutoZone and I get a code p0012. I've done lots of research and I've learned that this is all related to Toyota's well-known defective design and manufacturing of their engines. I have a 2az Fe engine. I bought this car with 125,000 miles on it in 2020. It now has about 154,000 mi on it. I didn't know that the oil consumption was extreme until this point of research. Now my car is making a rattling sound most likely the engine needs to be replaced. Technically yes I can drive it but it will stall and probably light on fire if I do and this is dangerous. They had a TSB warranty extension in 2016 I believe. I did not own the car that time nor do I know if that car was even subjected to the extension notice. But it is well known engine can do this and the Pistons fail around this mileage that my car has. It's out of warranty but I'm reading everywhere people having problems with this year's car and the other cars with this engine right now. There's a whole group of engines that are starting to fail because of these poorly designed Pistons that can affect oil leakage. Not only wasting a precious resource but causing a very dangerous situation for drivers. This should be addressed by Toyota still I want them to fix my engine or replace it before I cause an accident that can lead to death. I'm choosing to not drive it right now but I don't have the luxury of a second car. I may have to drive it.
2006 Toyota Rav4 with 2.4 liter engine burning oil rapidly. Burning approximately 4 quarts of oil in 3,000 miles. Vehicle currently has 100,000 miles. Issue persists even though I maintain routine maintenance on the vehicle. Luckily no safety hazards have occurred yet, but there is a high risk for potential safety hazard. Vehicle has been inspected by 3 different mechanics. I have been told by 3 different mechanics that this is a common issue for cars with this year/engine. About 2,800 miles after high synthetic oil change the vehicle begins to sound like it is struggling to accelerate at low speeds and the check engine oil light will briefly turn on at random then go away. Light does not stay lit or continuously flicker.

This 2006 Rav4 engine is known for its massive oil consumption due to the faulty piston rings. Always kept oil in it and had regular changes because of this issue. Checked the oil 2 days prior to the engine failure, and all was well. Driving down the hwy going around 70mph, the engine started to lose power and sound funny (high rpm sounds with no power), so I took my foot off the gas and coasted for a few seconds. Down to 50mph, I hit the gas pedal, and then a loud BOOM happened and car shook. Smoke from the engine, and then all the dash lights came on. Lost all power. Looked under the engine and a piston had blown a hole through the bottom of it. Needs new engine now. Mechanic inspected it and they documented with a picture. Thankfully I was not injured as that could have caused a serious wreck, especially if there was someone behind me. I've read about these engines being blown regularly online. Even some before 100k miles. No warnings before this happened.

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE OIL WAS LEAKING AND EXCESSIVELY BURNING TO THE EXTENT THAT IT COULD CAUSE A POSSIBLE ENGINE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT A WARRANTY RELATED CAMPAIGN REGARDING THE ENGINE HAD BEEN ISSUED HOWEVER, THE TIME-FRAME WAS EXCEEDED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.

THE ENGINE IS BURNING OIL DUE TO BAD PISTON RINGS. I DID SOME DIGGING FOUND THAT THAT IT WAS MANUFACTURED THIS WAY.
THERE WAS A RECALL REGARDING OIL CONSUMPTION. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THEY FILLED UP THE OIL AND TOLD ME TO COME BACK AFTER 3000 MILES BUT TO NOT FILL THE OIL. HALFWAY IN, THE OIL WAS COMPLETELY EXHAUSTED. BECAUSE IT HAD NOT BEEN 3000 MILES, I COULD NOT TAKE IT BACK FOR A FIX. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO ADD OIL OR THE ENGINE BLOWS. WHEN I DID TAKE IT BACK, I WAS GIVEN THE RESPONSE THAT THE VEHICLE BURNS A NORMAL AMOUNT OF OIL AND I TOLD THEM I HAD TO FILL IT IN BETWEEN TO AVOID THE ENGINE BLOWING. THEY REFUSED TO FIX THE RECALL. I CONTACTED TOYOTA WHO ALSO REFUSED TO FIX THE RECALL BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP HAD WRITTEN "NORMAL" CONSUMPTION. THE VEHICLE BURNS OIL AT A VERY RAPID RATE AND I WOULD LIKE THIS RECALL PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE.
THE ENGINE IS BURNING OIL LIKE MAD. I PURCHASED IT THREE WEEKS AGO AND THERE WERE NO ISSUES WHEN I LOOKED AT IT. I HOOKED MY OBD II SCANNER AND NO CODES POPPED, WHICH MADE ME GO AHEAD AND PURCHASE IT. I HEARD ABOUT THE TOYOTA 2AZ-FE ENGINES HAVING OIL ISSUES, BUT THIS IS GETTING OUT OF HAND. MY MECHANIC CHANGED MY OIL A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AGO AND NOTIFIED ME THAT I WAS A QUART LOW, BUT FILLED IT FOR ME. HE TOLD ME IF I WAS CONCERNED TO MONITOR IT, WHICH I HAVE. TONIGHT, FEBRUARY 27, 2020, I CHECKED MY OIL WHILE IT'S STATIONARY IN MY DRIVEWAY AND HAS NOT BEEN ON FOR OVER FOUR HOURS AND IT'S RIGHT AROUND THE LOW LEVEL LINE. I GOT MY OIL CHANGED AT 163,035 MILES. IT'S NOW LOW AT 163,260 MILES! I'M SCARED AND CONCERNED ABOUT DRIVING IT BECAUSE BEING A COLLEGE STUDENT AND WORKING, I WOULD DREAD THAT MY RAV4'S ENGINE BLOWS UP OR SEIZES ON ME OUT OF NO WHERE. MY CAR HAS BEEN CONSUMING LOTS OF OIL HOWEVER I WAS NEVER ABLE TO IDENTIFY WHERE THE LEAK WAS COMING FROM. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CERTIFIED REPAIR SERVICE WHEN I WENT TO GET OIL CHANGED THEY INDICATED THEY DID NOT IDENTIFY ANY LEAKS AND THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING CORRECTLY ALTHOUGH I RETURNED TO TOYOTA CERTIFIED REPAIR SERVICE WITHIN APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS SERVICE ADVISOR ACKNOWLEDGED THAT LEAK SHOULD HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED CLOSER. SERVICE ADVISOR VIEWED OIL EVERYWHERE UNDERNEATH HOOD AND IT AGAIN REQUIRED 2.5 QUARTS ON OIL IN THIS SHORT TIME FRAME. I WAS ADVISED TO DRIVE ANOTHER 1K MILES AND BRING BACK TO DETERMINE WHERE LEAK WAS LOCATED AND THEY WOULD ASSIST WITH REPAIR COSTS HOWEVER I BROUGHT BACK WITHIN 584 MILES AND VEHICLE AGAIN HAD CONSUMED ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF OIL YET NOW ADVISOR AND SERVICE MANAGER INSISTED THEY COULD NOT HELP WITH ANYTHING. ONLY AFTER BEING VISUALLY UPSET ABOUT THE MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS DID THE SERVICE ADVISOR LIBRA JONES MENTION ANYTHING ABOUNT THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT ZE7 BUT ALSO STATED MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED AND I WAS LEFT TO FEND FOR MYSELF. LIBRA JONES TOLD ME TO CONTACT TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY WOULD HELP AND BRIEFLY MENTION THE GOODWILL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. HOWEVER AFTER SPEAKING TO MILLIE@ TOYOTA, SHE HAD NO INTENTIONS OF ASSISTING WITH ANY REPAIR COSTS AND EVEN ASKED TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER IN REGARDS TO MY ISSUE AND SHE STATED SHE WOULD HAVE A MANAGER CONTACT WITHING 24 HOURS HOWEVER NO ONE BOTHERED TO EVER REACH OUT TO ME WHATEVER WHICH FORCED ME TO CONTACT MANY OF THE TOP EXECUTIVES TO ADDRESS MY CONCERNS. BASED ON THE EXECUTIVE ASSITANCE EBONEY BLANKS REACTIONS, TOYOTAL NEVER INTENDED TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE AS IT RELATES TO THEIR PRODUCTS. THEY INDICATED THEY MAILED OUT DOCUMENTS TO MY GRANDPARENTS HOWEVER RECORDS WOULD REFLECT IF THERE WERE ANY REPAIRS THAT REQUIRED ATTENTION MY GRANDPARENTS WOULD HAVE DONE PRIOR TO SELLING TO ME

2.4 ENGINE BURNS EXCESSIVE OIL. APPARENTLY, OTHER TOYOTA MODELS WITH THE SAME 2.4 ENGINE HAVE HAD FREE REPAIRS. I BELIEVE TOYOTA SHOULD REPAIR THE 2.4 ENGINE IN MY 2006 RAV4 TO STOP THE EXCESSIVE OIL BURNING. IT NOW BURNS ONE QUART FOR EVERY 500-600 MILES.

TAMARA RECALL ENGINE FAILURE ALMOST CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT. DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THE IT'S AN RECALL BUT, IT HAS NOW EXPIRED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A SAFETY RECALL CAN EXPIRE. I NEED HELP FROM AN ATTORNEY ON THIS MATTER. BECAUSE THIS ISN'T RIGHT. CAN YOU RECOMMEND AN ATTORNEY? THEY SAID THEY COULD ONLY DO NEW RINGS AND NEW PISTONS BACK THEN BUT NOW TOYOTA WILL NOT EVEN DO THAT. SO NOW I JUST HAVE A 5,000 BILL FOR A NEW ENGINE.
OIL LIGHT CAME ON SECONDS BEFORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND I HAD TO PULL OFF ROAD. ENGINE REQUIRED FOUR (4) QUARTS OF OIL. NO WARNING OF LOW OIL!! I WAS DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT THIS TIME!

UNFORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER ANY TYPE OF WARRANTY COVERAGE, MAKING REPAIRS FINANCIALLY IMPOSSIBLE

UNFORTUNATELY, WHEN TYPING IN THE VIN IT DID NOT HAVE A RECALL FOR THAT SPECIFIC VEHICLE. BUT IT DID MATCHED EXACTLY WHAT THE SYMPTOMS OF THAT RECALL WAS. I CALLED THE 1-800 CUSTOMER HELP LINE AND THEY WERE UNHELPFUL. I WAS TOLD THE RECALL EXPIRED AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID NOT TAKE ACTION WITH THE RECALL. THIS CAN BE A HUGE ROAD SAFETY HAZARD FOR BOTH THE DRIVER AND OTHER DRIVERS AROUND THE VEHICLE. THE CAR IS CONSUMING OIL DUE TO THE PISTONS RECALL. PLEASE HELP.

I BOUGHT A 2006 RAV4 LIMITED FROM TOYOTA OF ELIZABETH CITY IN NC. THIS RAV4 IS NICE AND RUNS WELL, HOWEVER IT CONSUMES ABOUT 1 QUART OF OIL EVERY 1000 MILES. I SPOKE WITH THE PREVIOUS OWNER, WHOM INFORMED ME THAT HE EXPRESSED THE ISSUE TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE HE TRADED THIS VEHICLE IN AT. THE DEALER FAILED TO LET US KNOW ABOUT THIS EXTENSIVE TSB RELATING TO THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. IT IS NOT NICE TO SELL A VEHICLE WITH A WELL KNOWN ACTIVE TSB. IT IS FURTHER UNACCEPTABLE FOR TOYOTA TO NOT HAVE A ALL OUT RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. WILL BE CALLING TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I FEEL THAT THIS IS EXCESSIVE AND IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT IT IS PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD WHICH WAS MOSTLY KEPT QUIET BY TOYOTA I FEEL THEY SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE REPAIRS FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME TO ALLOW ALL THE ONES INCLUDING MYSELF AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE REPAIRS. TEST WAS DONE ON 12/22/2017.
2006 TOYOTA RAV4 WITH 51,000 MILES: MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY GOING 70 MPH (THE SPEED LIMIT) AND ALL OF A SUDDEN ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON IN THE DASH AND CAR DIED, LEFT MY DAUGHTER STRANDED ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. HAD IT TOWED AND IT WAS AN ENGINE FAILURE. YES, ENGINE FAILED AT 51,000 MILES. OUT OF WARRANTY AND TOYOTA WON'T DO A THING ABOUT IT.

I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE ON THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM AND THEY DID AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST, WHICH WAS NOT PERFORMED AS I DROVE OVER THE REQUIRED 1200 MILES. HOWEVER, THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO HAVE THE BOTTOM PART OF THE ENGINE REBUILT. NOT ONCE DID THEY MENTION THE ONGOING PROBLEM. I TOLD THEM I HAD TO THINK ABOUT IT AND WAS TOLD TO CHECK THE OIL MORE OFTEN THAN NORMAL. AFTER GETTING HOME AND DOING RESEARCH ONLINE DID I FIND THAT MY ENGINE CAN SEIZE AT ANY TIME EVEN WITH OIL IN IT. ALSO, IF I PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, THIS CAN HAPPEN AGAIN. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR REPAIRS NOR ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD HAVE NEVER BOUGHT MY CAR IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. IT HAS BEEN 2000 MILES AND I HAVE HAD TO ADD 4 QUARTS OF OIL TO MY ENGINE. I AM TOLD THIS EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION IS DUE TO BAD PISTONS THAT WILL NEED TO BE CHANGED. WE EXITED THE FREEWAY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH, THE ENGINE SPUTTERED AND DIED. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND PARKED ON THE RIGHT CURB. FORTUNATELY THIS HAPPENED ON A CITY STREET AND NOT ON THE FREEWAY. POWER STEERING WAS OF COURSE LOST, SO THE MANEUVER WAS DIFFICULT. AAA TOWED THE CAR TO OUR REPAIR SHOP, AND THEY REPORTED 24 ENGINE CODES WERE THROWN, AND RECOMMENDED A COMPLETE ENGINE TUNE-UP, INCLUDING REPLACEMENT OF THE SIX IGNITION COIL PACKS, SPARK PLUGS, AND INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS. MUCH OF THE $1,000 EXPENSE WAS 4.5 HOURS OF LABOR, TO REMOVE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD (NECESSARY TO REACH THE REAR BANK OF CYLINDERS 1,3,5). THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE IGNITION COILS HAVE FAILED ON THIS VEHICLE. IN OCTOBER 2012 (AROUND 50K MILES) ENGINE CODE P0354 WAS THROWN, AND I REPLACED THE COIL ON CYLINDER 4. IN JANUARY 2014 (AROUND 58K MILES) CODE P0356 WAS THROWN, AND I REPLACED THE COIL ON CYLINDER 6. SINCE THE DANGEROUS INCIDENT OF LOST POWER AND REPLACEMENT OF ALL SIX COILS ON 14 JUNE 2016 (AROUND 80K MILES) ONLY NINE MONTHS AND 7K MILES LATER, CODE P0351 (BAD COIL ON CYLINDER 1) WAS THROWN ON 24 MARCH 2017, AND NOW CODE P0355 (CYLINDER 5) WAS THROWN ON 28 MARCH 2017. I HAVE ALREADY SPENT AROUND $1,200 TO DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEM, AND THE CAR IS TODAY BACK IN THE REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE TWO REAR BANK COILS REPLACED, FOR $229. THEY CLAIM A LETTER WAS SENT OFFERING A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND WOULD HAVE POSSIBLY COVERED REPAIRS IF I HAD AN ISSUE DURING THE 10 YEAR PERIOD THEY WERE OFFERING WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT. I NEVER SAW SUCH A LETTER. MY CAR NEVER HAD LOWE OIL RECORDED UNTIL MY ONE OIL CHANGE WHERE I WAS BASICALLY EMPTY. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA, BUT THEY ARE SAYING THERE IS NOTHING THEY WILL DO FOR ME. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH MANY LAWSUITS AND SHOULD BE A RECALL. 10/26/15 WAS SERVICED BY GERMAIN TOYOTA, NAPLES, FL, OIL TANK WAS EMPTY AND ENGINE WAS OVERHEATED. THE CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN 3711 MILES SINCE LAST OIL CHANGE (THERE WAS NO LEAK). I PUT A QUART OF OIL IN SO THAT I COULD DRIVE IT TO THE DEALER. THEY PERFORMED THEIR VERSION OF AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND CLAIMED IT PASSED THE TEST. 3/11/16 OIL TANK WAS EMPTY AND CAR WAS OVERHEATED. IT HAD BEEN DRIVEN 2496 MILES SINCE THE PREVIOUS OIL CHANGE. THEY SAID IT HAD PASSED THE PREVIOUS TEST & ALL WAS OK. 10/7/16 OIL TANK WAS EMPTY, HAD BEEN DRIVEN BUT I HAD PURCHASED 3 QTS OF OIL AND ADDED IT TO THE EMPTY TANK. PRIOR TO ME ADDING THE OIL, CAR WAS EXTREMELY OVERHEATED AND I GOT BURNED TRYING TO GET THE HOOD UP. I COULD NOT TOUCH ANY PART OF THE ENGINE OR WOULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY BURNED. THE CAR NOW FAILED A NEW OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. THEY ADVISED THEY COULD NOT FIX IT BECAUSE AS OF 4/3/2016 IT WAS OUT OF THE THEIR EXTENDED 10-YR WARRANTY FOR OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME IT IS NOW MY RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTINUALLY ADD OIL. IF A SAFETY HAZARD SHOULD OCCUR THEY SAID IT WOULD BE MY FAULT AND NOT THEIRS. IN ALL CASES ABOVE THE ENGINE WAS ON, VEHICLE IN MOTION ON CITY STREETS WHEN THE INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON OR CAR OVERHEATED. THERE WAS NO OIL ON THE DIP STICK WHEN CHECKED IN EVERY ONE OF THE CASES.

I WAS TOLD THE DEALERSHIP WOULD PERFORM NO FURTHER ACTION AND MY NEXT ALTERNATIVE WOULD BE TO CONTACT TOYOTAS REGIONAL OR CORPORATE OFFICE. THEY SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND TRIED TO TELL ME THAT IT IS CAUSED BY NORMAL WEAR & TEAR. MY LAST VEHICLE I HAD FOR OVER 190,000 MILES AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. UPON RESEARCHING, THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY AS FAILURE TO FIX IT COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. PREVIOUSLY I HAVE BROUGHT THE LOUD POPPING NOISE TO VARIOUS TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS AND HAVE NEVER BEEN TOLD OF THIS ISSUE IN 9 YEARS. THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IF IS WASN'T FOR THE RECALL ON THE AIRBAG. ANYTHING THAT APPEARS TO BE A "COMMON" ISSUE IN A VEHICLE THAT CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED BY TOYOTA AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. WHEN THE OIL WAS DRAINED I WAS INFORMED THAT THE OIL WAS LOW. I ASSUMED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE DEALERS SHOP FOR A RECALL AND THE OIL CHANGE WAS DONE THEIR THAT THEY FAILED TO PUT THE PROPER AMOUNT OF OIL INTO THE VEHICLE. WITH LESS THAN 3500 MILES AND THREE MONTHS THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I WENT IN TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AND CHECKED FOR LEAKS. IT WAS SHORT APPROXIMATELY TWO QUARTS WITH NO SIGNS OF AN OIL LEAK. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS WITH THIS SAME MODEL WHO EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM DUE TO THE VEHICLE BURNING OIL, AND TOLD TO CONTACT TOYOTA. IT WAS ALSO SUGGESTED TO REGULARLY CHECK THE OIL EVERY TWO WEEKS. UPON RETURNING HOME I CHECKED ON LINE AND FOUND MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE WITH VEHICLES WITH LOW MILEAGE. THEY OFFERED ME NO ASSISTANCE BUT DID TELL ME THAT THEY WERE OFFERING 0 PERCENT ON NEW VEHICLES. I WOULD NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER TOYOTA. I KNOW SOMEONE WITH THE SAME CAR AS MINE WHO SPENT SEVERAL HUNDREDS TRYING TO GET HER CAR FIXED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND JUST FINALLY TRADED IT FOR SOMETHING ELSE. THIS IS THE BASE MODEL FOUR CYLINDER MODEL. OIL SHOULD NOT BE GONE IN LESS THAN 3000 MILES ESPECIAL WITH AN ENGINE THAT HAS LESS THAT 150000 MILES TODAY. I FEEL THIS IS A DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA AND THAT EVERYONE THAT ENCOUNTERS THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE COMPISATED FOR THE KBB FAIR VALUE AT THE TIME IT HAPPENS FOR THIS PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS THE CENTERPIPE THAT WAS CONNECTED TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE MATERIAL OF THE CENTERPIPE AND CATALYTIC WAS RUSTED AND THE DEALERSHIP BLAMED IT ON ME AND THAT I DROVE THE CAR OFF ROADING. I TOLD THEM THAT THE CAR HAS NEVER GONE OFF ROADING, GARAGED, AND WELL MAINTAINED. OTHER 2006 RAV4 OWNERS HAVE CITED THE SAME ISSUE STATING THAT THE MATERIAL AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE CENTERPIPE AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER WERE OF POOR QUALITY. THE SEAMS OF THE CENTERPIPE JUST COMPLETELY CAME UNDONE. WHEN SPEAKING WITH THE DEALERSHIP, THEY REFUSED TO COVER IT UNDER THE EMISSIONS WARRANTY. WHEN TALKING TO THE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AGENCY FOR EMISSIONS, THEY SAID THAT TOYOTA SHOULD COVER IT. THIS CENTERPIPE ISSUE BECAME A LARGER ISSUE WHEN THE VEHICLE MISFIRED AND THE VSC, CHECK ENGINE, AND 4WD LIGHTS ON. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO DISCUSS WHAT THE ISSUE MAY BE. OTHER OWNERS STATED THAT THE IGNITION COILS WERE OF POOR QUALITY AND TOYOTA HAS ISSUED REPLACEMENTS. TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY. SHORTLY AFTER, THE CAR SEEMS TO BE DRIVING VERY CLUNKY AND DOES NOT DRIVE AS WELL AS USUAL. THE CAR VIBRATES AND DRIVES VERY SLOWLY. IT SOUNDED LIKE IT DROPPED A CYLINDER. THE ENGINE SOUNDS VERY CLUNKY. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES. IGNITION COILS WERE REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC, AND 4WD LIGHTS TURN ON SOLID EACH OF THESE INSTANCES. I HAVE ALWAYS BROUGHT IN MY TOYOTA FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE TO THE DEALER EVERY 5,000 MILES. IN JULY OF THIS YEAR, THE OIL WARNING LIGHT BEGAN TO LIGHT EVERY TIME I HIT THE BRAKES. MY DEALER PERFORMED AN OIL CONSUMPTION CHECK. BY NOVEMBER I WAS ADVISED TO HAVE THE ENGINE RECONSTRUCTED AND REPAIR THE RINGS AND PISTONS, BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS LEAKING EXCESSIVE OIL. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKES. THE REPAIRS COST OVER $3500 AND TOOK OVER A WEEK TO COMPLETE. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT THIS MODEL TOYOTA HAS A RECORD OF STUCK OIL RINGS CAUSING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION WHICH LEADS TO ENGINE FAILURE. I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM. ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO LOSS OF OIL CAN CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I OWN A 2006 RAV4. BOUGHT IT NEW AND HAVE HAD EVERY OIL CHANGE AND RECOMMENDED ENGINE SERVICE DONE SINCE THAT TIME DONE AT THE DEALERSHIP. A FEW MONTHS AGO, I TOOK IT IN TO HAVE MY FLUIDS CHECKED BEFORE A ROAD TRIP, AND WAS TOLD THAT THE DIPSTICK SHOWED THAT I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO OIL! IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE AS I HAD JUST HAD AN OIL CHANGE ABOUT 3 WEEKS PRIOR. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY ADDED SOME OIL AND SAID THEY WOULD "MONITOR THE OIL CONSUMPTION." I THOUGHT MAYBE A CARELESS MECHANIC FAILED TO PROPERLY FILL THE RESERVOIR. HOWEVER, SINCE THEN, I HAVE HAD TO GO BACK EVERY 1000 MILES SO THEY COULD CHECK THE DIPSTICK AND ADD OIL, BUT EACH TIME WAS TOLD THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE THE MONITORING. HOWEVER, ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO, THEY CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THEY HAD SOME INFORMATION FOR ME. I WAS TOLD THAT TO FIX THE PROBLEM I REALLY NEED A NEW ENGINE, AS THE OIL IS BEING USED INTERNALLY BY THE ENGINE DUE TO A PISTON ASSEMBLY DESIGN PROBLEM PER THE TSB. I ASKED IF TOYOTA WAS GOING TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR ME AT IT'S COST, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NO RECALL BECAUSE IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE ANSWER AS THIS IS NOT A "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" ISSUE, IT'S A DESIGN DEFECT ISSUE. AS SUCH, TOYOTA SHOULD STEP UP AND FIX THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE OBVIOUSLY BEING EXPERIENCED BY ( JUDGING FROM THE VARIOUS BLOGS I'VE BEEN VIEWING) LOTS OF TOYOTA OWNERS WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO GET AN OIL CHANGE, THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING SHOWING ON THE DIP STICK. ALTHOUGH A LOW-OIL LIGHT NEVER APPEARED TO LET ME KNOW THAT THE OIL WAS LOW, THE OIL WAS VERY LOW. I STARTED CHECKING MY OIL LEVEL OFTEN AND NOTICED THAT I NEEDED TO ADD OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. I CAN ALSO SMELL BURNING OIL WHEN I ACCELERATE EITHER TO GET ON A HIGHWAY RAMP OR TO GO UP A HILL. A DEALERSHIP SUBSEQUENTLY TOLD ME THAT THE RINGS ON THE ENGINE BLOCK WERE WORN AND THAT I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE THAT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $8,500. THIS IS MY STORY: MY WIFE, YORKIE, AND I WENT TO PICK UP MY SON AT PRESCHOOL EARLY THIS AFTERNOON IN WESTON, FL WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN WE HEAR A BRIEF WHINE NOISE FOLLOWED BY THE CHECK ENGINE AND OIL LIGHTS ON THE PANEL; THE ENGINE SHUT ITSELF OFF. I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BUT THE CAR WAS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. I CRANKED THE ENGINE ON AGAIN AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE FOR ANOTHER 100 YARDS. THE SAME WHINE NOISE FOLLOWED BY THE SAME LIGHTS AND ENGINE SHUT OFF. AFTERWARDS, THE ENGINE WOULD TURN ON AND IT IMMEDIATELY WOULD SHUT OFF; NOT A CHANCE TO ENGAGE TO DRIVE AND MOVE AN INCH. I LOOKED AT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND THERE WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL; THE OIL LEVEL WAS FINE (THE CAR HAS NEVER HAD A LEAK AND HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED), NO FUNNY SMELLS, ETC. BY THIS TIME WE WERE SWEATING AND GETTING CONCERNED. I THOUGHT IT COULD BE THAT THE A/C COULD BE PART OF THE PROBLEM SINCE IT ADDS LOAD TO THE ENGINE SERPENTINE BELT; I TURNED OFF THE A/C BY DEPRESSING THE A/C BUTTON ON CAR'S DASH AND THE ENGINE STAYED ON. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR AND PICK UP MY SON THANKFULLY. I WAS READY TO SEND MY WIFE ON A CAB TO GET HIM. MY QUESTIONS TO YOU GUYS ARE THE FOLLOWING: WHY WOULD TOYOTA DESIGN THE ENGINE TO SHUT ITSELF OFF IN A SITUATION WHEN SOMETHING IN THE A/C FAILS? IF MY WIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE HIGHWAY WITH MY SON AND HAD THE ENGINE SHUT OFF, SHE WOULD HAVE COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT AND GOD FORBID IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS DEFECT CAUSES ENGINES TO SEIZE. AT THIS TIME I CALLED TOYOTA OF NORTH AMERICA (1800 331-4331) DIRECTLY TO REPORT THIS ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT AS OF TODAY NO RECALL OR REIMBURSEMENT IS BEING ISSUED BUT IF EVERYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM CALL TOYOTA OF NORTH AMERICA DIRECTLY TO REPORT THEIR PROBLEM THEN AN INVESTIGATION WILL BE ISSUED. THEN I CALLED AAA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THEY TOWED IT TO THEIR NEAREST CERTIFIED SERVICE CENTER, WHO DETECTED THAT THERE WAS PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY WHICH IS AN ELECTRONIC PART FOR THIS TYPE OF CAR.
