HAD MY 2006 TOYOTA RAV 4 IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR RECALL SERVICES. I ALSO HAD RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE TUNEUP AND BRAKE FLUID DRAIN AND REFILL. WHEN I LEFT THE PARKING LOT OF THE DEALERSHIP, I CROSSED 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC, BRAKED, WAITED FOR ALTERNATE TRAFFIC TO PASS BEFORE TURNING ONTO THE CITY STREET WITH MY FOOT STILL ON BRAKE, THE CAR ACCELERATED, LURCHED THEN ACCELERATED AGAIN WITHOUT ME PRESSING ON THE GAS AND CONTINUING TO BRAKE WHEN IT ACCELERATED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP BACK THE NEXT MORNING AND THEY TOWED IT BACK IN. AFTER THEY PERFORMED SEVERAL TESTS AND TEST DRIVE IT THEY COULD NOT GET IT TO DUPLICATE THE SAME THING. THERE WERE TWO PREVIOUS OCCURRENCES THAT I DID NOT REPORT TO THIS ENTITY SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR USED. THEY HAPPENED CLOSE TOGETHER AND NOT AGAIN UNTIL THE MOST RECENT EVENT. I BELIEVE THE PROHIBITIVE COST OF THROTTLE BODY AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL MODULE ($1,519.40) WHICH ARE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS TO ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM AND NOT THE FLOOR MATS, IS WHY THE PREVIOUS OWNER SOLD THE CAR TO ME. NO WARNING FORTHCOMING, EVEN THOUGH I DID ASK.

WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED ENGINE ATTEMPTS TO MAINTAIN SPEED, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STOP. AFTER CAR HAS STOPPED, STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL AGAIN MAY ONLY ALLOW CAR TO MOVE FORWARD VERY SLOWLY. THIS STARTED HAPPENING WITHIN THE LAST MONTH AND HAS OCCURRED FOUR TIMES SO FAR. IT HAPPENS WITH THE CAR IN MOTION AND EITHER TURNING OR GOING STRAIGHT. SO FAR ALL INCIDENTS WERE WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS. ALL SAFETY RECALLS ARE UP TO DATE. DEALER SAYS APPLYING BRAKE PRESSURE DISENGAGES THE ACCELERATOR, BUT THIS IS NOT HAPPENING. THE GAS PEDAL MOVES FREELY AND THERE IS NO INTERFERENCE FROM THE FLOOR MAT. THE CAR IS AT THE DEALER NOW.

1/30/14 RECALL PART - REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARM REPAIRED BY HANDY. SHORTLY AFTER (1-3 MONTHS) I NOTICED SWERVE/SWAY DURING HARD RIGHT TURNS. I SUSPECTED BAD OR UNDERINFLATED TIRE ON DRIVERS SIDE REAR. CHECKED ALL TIRE INFLATION AND LUG NUT TIGHTNESS BUT THE SWERVE/SWAY CONTINUED. ON 10/16/14 I HAD (4) NEW SNOW TIRES INSTALLED AT SUMNER TIRE IN NEWPORT/DERBY, VT. I THOUGHT IT WOULD ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM BUT THE SWERVE/SWAY CONTINUED. ON 10/21/14 I HAD LOCAL MECHANIC PERFORM A FOUR WHEEL ALIGNMENT. THE MECHANIC COULD NOT MAKE THE ADJUST BUT CONFIRMED DRIVERS SIDE REAR WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT. ON 1/16/15 I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT HANDY TO RESOLVE THIS AND OTHER ISSUES. HANDY OFFERED FREE LABOR IF I PAID $309.43 FOR PARTS TO REPLACE THE FAILED RECALL. WITHIN A FEW DAYS I CONTACTED NATIONAL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SPOKE TO [XXX]. REF #CAN'T BE ENTERED AS IT FLAGS AS A SS NUMBER. [XXX] CALLED BACK TO STATE THAT HANDY SHOULD BE CONTACTING ME BY END OF THE WEEK CONCERNING THIS ISSUE. RECEIVED A ON-LINE SURVEY ONLY IN WHICH I MADE CLEAR THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A FAILED RECALL ITEM THAT WAS NOT FIXED PROPERLY. I CALLED NATIONAL C.S. AGAIN TWO WEEKS LATER TO REPORT THAT I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY CONTACT FROM HANDY. AFTER THAT CALL, STILL NO CONTACT WAS RECEIVED. I CALLED HANDY (3) TIMES ASKING TO SPEAK TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, [XXX] , WHO WAS ALWAYS BUSY. I FINALLY RECEIVED A CALL BACK FROM A SERVICE TECHNICIAN, [XXX], WITH A LOWER OFFER FOR THE COST OF THE PARTS TO FIX THE RECALL OF $226.03. I CALLED HANDY BACK STATING THAT I FELT THEIR OFFER WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND THAT I WOULD BE FILING A COMPLAINT WITH THE BBB FOR ASSISTANCE. MY POINT IN ALL OF THIS IS THAT TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS PART AND THE RECALL FAILED AND SHOULD NOT BE REPAIRED AT THE CONSUMER'S COST. DRIVING DOWN ROAD AT 20-25 MPH. SUDDENLY THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL LOCKED UP (BRAKE PEDAL WAS *NOT* BEING PRESSED) AND BEGAN THE ABS SHUDDER AS IF VEHICLE WAS BRAKING ON ICE. WHEN BACKING THE CAR OUT AND TURNING THE STEERING, THERE IS A CLUNKING NOISE THAT OCCURS. IT MOSTLY OCCURS FROM A COLD START. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN OUT FOR THIS, BUT THE DEALER WON'T COVER IT. THE CAR STARTED MAKING A POPPING SOUND. IT WAS COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THAT CAR AND MADE THE EXHAUST SOUND REALLY LOUD. DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS THE CENTERPIPE THAT WAS CONNECTED TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE MATERIAL OF THE CENTERPIPE AND CATALYTIC WAS RUSTED AND THE DEALERSHIP BLAMED IT ON ME AND THAT I DROVE THE CAR OFF ROADING. I TOLD THEM THAT THE CAR HAS NEVER GONE OFF ROADING, GARAGED, AND WELL MAINTAINED. OTHER 2006 RAV4 OWNERS HAVE CITED THE SAME ISSUE STATING THAT THE MATERIAL AND CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE CENTERPIPE AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER WERE OF POOR QUALITY. THE SEAMS OF THE CENTERPIPE JUST COMPLETELY CAME UNDONE. WHEN SPEAKING WITH THE DEALERSHIP, THEY REFUSED TO COVER IT UNDER THE EMISSIONS WARRANTY. WHEN TALKING TO THE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AGENCY FOR EMISSIONS, THEY SAID THAT TOYOTA SHOULD COVER IT. THIS CENTERPIPE ISSUE BECAME A LARGER ISSUE WHEN THE VEHICLE MISFIRED AND THE VSC, CHECK ENGINE, AND 4WD LIGHTS ON. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO DISCUSS WHAT THE ISSUE MAY BE. OTHER OWNERS STATED THAT THE IGNITION COILS WERE OF POOR QUALITY AND TOYOTA HAS ISSUED REPLACEMENTS. TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY. SHORTLY AFTER, THE CAR SEEMS TO BE DRIVING VERY CLUNKY AND DOES NOT DRIVE AS WELL AS USUAL. THE CAR VIBRATES AND DRIVES VERY SLOWLY. IT SOUNDED LIKE IT DROPPED A CYLINDER. THE ENGINE SOUNDS VERY CLUNKY. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES. IGNITION COILS WERE REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC, AND 4WD LIGHTS TURN ON SOLID EACH OF THESE INSTANCES. WHILE DRIVING FROM MARYLAND TO MAINE FOR A VACATION, I NOTICED MY TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AND GRINDING GEARS FREQUENTLY IN THE RANGE OF 20-35 MPH. I NOTICED IT HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY DURING SLOWDOWN FOR MAKING A TURN AND THEN ACCELERATION TO RESUME DRIVING. I DID NOT HAVE ANY ACCIDENTS, BUT THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY. I HAD PREVIOUSLY REPORTED THE PROBLEM, WHEN IT HAPPENED LESS FREQUENTLY, TO MY DEALERSHIP (DARCARS OF FREDERICK) AND THEY TOLD ME THAT 1)THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE SOUND DURING THEIR TEST RUN AND 2) IF SUCH A THING HAD HAPPENED, MY ECU WOULD HAVE MADE A NOTE OF IT AND RECORDED IT. SINCE THERE WAS NO RECORD OF IT HAPPENING, IT WAS NOTHING. HOWEVER, UPON READING SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE RAV4 02-03 MODELS, REGARDING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, I FIND THAT THEIR ISSUES OF HANGING BEFORE SLIPPING INTO GEAR, GRINDING GEAR AND NOT FINDING THE GEAR AT ALL ARE THE SAME ONES I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING IN MY '06 RAV4. COULD IT BE THAT MY ECU IS BAD? YES, BUT MY DEALER WON'T ACKNOWLEDGE THAT POSSIBILITY. THEY CHECK MY FLOOR MATS, BUT NOT THE ECU FOR FAULTY ISSUES. FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS YEAR (I ALSO DOCUMENTED THE SAME PROBLEM 2/24/13), WE EXPERIENCED UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION AND THE CAR BUCKING. WE WERE BACKING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY. MY HUSBAND BACKED UP AND REALIZED HE NEEDED TO STRAIGHTEN OUT ON THE CURVED DRIVEWAY SO PUT IT IN DRIVE FOR A FEW FEET AND THEN WHEN HE PUT IT IN REVERSE, THE ENGINE STARTED REVVING UP TO A MAXIMUM RPM'S. HE IS 200 POUNDS AND HAD TO HOLD HIS FOOT ON THE BREAK TO KEEP IT FROM MOVING. HE PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. MY 20 YEAR OLD SON WAS IN THE CAR WITH US AND GOT OUT AND COULD SMELL THE ENGINE FROM REVVING UP SO HIGH. MY BROTHER AND SISTER IN LAW CAME RUNNING OUT OF THE HOUSE BECAUSE THEY COULD HEAR THE ENGINE REVVING UP AND KNEW SOMETHING WAS VERY WRONG. LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED, WE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE AND THEY COULDN'T REPLICATE THE ISSUE. I AM NOT SAFE IN MY OWN CAR. TOYOTA HAS GOT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS AND FIX THE ISSUE! I TOOK MY 2006 RAV4 INTO THE LEITH TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN RALEIGH, NC FOR THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RECALL. SERVICE MANAGER CALLS ME AND SAID THAT THERE IS A BANGING VIBRATION AND NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. (THIS DID NOT EXIST BEFORE.) THE MANAGER SAID THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON THE MANUFACTURERS DEFECTIVE DESIGN AND THAT FAILURE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS REPAIR IS NEARLY $400 AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY RECALL NOR MY NOW EXPIRED WARRANTY. WHEN I NEXT DROVE THE RAV4 THE BANGING WAS SO STRONG THAT THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER COULD FEEL IT. I CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE PROGRAM, WHO CONFIRMED THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN BUT SAID THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE ABOUT THEM PAYING FOR THE REPAIR. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THE REPAIR IS NOT COVERED AND THAT TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE WOULD CONTACT ME AS TO WHAT FURTHER WOULD BE DONE. AFTER WAITING MORE THAN 60 DAYS FOR TOYOTA TO CALL ME, I CALLED CUSTOMER CARE AGAIN ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT NOTHING MORE WOULD BE DONE. I ASKED TO SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR, BUT NONE WAS AVAILABLE. I WAS TOLD THAT A SUPERVISOR WOULD CALL ME BACK WITHIN 24 HOURS. 30 HOURS LATER TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE LEFT A PHONE MESSAGE FOR ME TO CALL THEM BACK. I HAVE ALSO HAD ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THAT HAVE CAUSED THIS RAV4 TO LOOSE POWER AND STOP WHILE TRAVELING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE BATTERY GOES DEAD ABOUT EVERY TWO MONTHS. *TR

I QUICKLY TURNED ON MY FOUR WAYS AND MOVED TO THE FAR LEFT OF HIGHWAY FOR SAFETY . ALL THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS WENT OFF AND CAR RESUMED NORMAL DRIVING FUNCTIONS. ON FEBRUARY 16, 2011 I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AGAIN ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE LANES AND THE CAR DECELERATED AND APPEARED TO BE STALLING-OUT ALSO ALL THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS WHEN ON:CHECK ENGINE ,ABS,VSH,AND 4WD. 2006 TOYOTA RAV4. UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION. *GR THE CONSUMER STATED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, HE EXPERIENCED UNWANTED ACCELERATION. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE HE WAS TRAVELING OUT OF TOWN AND HE DISCOVERED HE HAD DIFFICULTY STOPPING THE VEHICLE TWICE. FIRST AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, AND ANOTHER TIME AT A TOLL BOOTH. ON BOTH OCCASIONS, THE ENGINE REVVED VERY LOUDLY. THE SECOND INCIDENT HAPPENED ONE YEAR LATER AND THE CONSUMER HAD TO QUICKLY PLACE THE GEAR IN NEUTRAL AND PRESS HARD ON THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I BOUGHT MY BRAND NEW TOYOTA RAV 4 IN AUGUST 2006. I USE IT VERY LIGHTLY MOSTLY TO COMMUTE TO WORK WHICH IS ABOUT 10 MILES. ABOUT 9 MONTH LATER, I HEARD A SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES. WHEN I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD THE FRONT BRAKES NEED TO BE CHANGED. I ARGUED THAT THE BRAKES HAVE TO BE DEFECTIVE SINCE WITH MY PREVIOUS CAR I CHANGED THE BRAKES ONCE IN 16 YEARS. THE DEALER ARGUED THAT I HAVE TO BE AN AGGRESSIVE DRIVER THAT WHY I WORE THE BRAKES SO FAST AND THAT IT IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. THIS PROBLEM WAS REPEATED TWICE AFTER THAT. THIS MEANS THAT IN LESS THAN 4 YEARS. I CHANGED THE FRONT BRAKE PADS TWICE AND THE REAR BRAKE PADS ONCE. I FOUND THIS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL. SO FAR I HAVE SPENT ALMOST $1000 TO REPEATEDLY CHANGE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. RECENTLY I BELIEVE I FOUND THE PROBLEM. WHEN I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR SPEEDS VERY EASILY AND VERY FAST. HOWEVER, WHEN I RELEASE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR DOES NOT SLOW DOWN SPONTANEOUSLY. THE GAS PEDAL TAKES AN UNUSUALLY LONG TIME TO GO TO THE IDLE POSITION. I PURCHASED A TOYOTA 2006 RAV 4 IN JANUARY OF 2006 AND HAD THE CAR SERVICED AT THE TOYOTA DEALER PER THE SCHEDULED FACTORY MAINTENANCE SUGGESTIONS. IN OCTOBER OF 2006, I WAS TRYING TO AVOID RUNNING A YELLOW LIGHT ON PEACHTREE STREET IN ATLANTA, AND ACCELERATED HARD TO AVOID THE YELLOW LIGHT. THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD AND WAS OUT OF CONTROL. EVEN THOUGH I LIFTED MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE PEDAL. AFTER GETTING THROUGH THE INITIAL SHOCK I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL, THE ENGINE REVVED UP TO THE RED LINE AND I TURNED THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF. AFTER WAITING FOR A MINUTE I RESTARTED THE CAR IN PARK AND THE ENGINE IDLED NORMALLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND AFTER INSPECTING IT HE TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. AFTER THE RECALL OF THE TOYOTA RAV 4'S I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM AND TALKED TO HIS SERVICE MANAGER. HE TOLD ME THAT THE 2006 RAV 4'S HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED AS THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT GAS PEDAL AND WERE MADE IN JAPAN. HE COULD NOT EXPLAIN THE CAUSE OF THE ACCELERATION. IN EACH CASE, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WELL BEYOND THE CRUISE CONTROL SET POINT (TYPICALLY 55 MPH). THIS ACCELERATION OCCURRED ON FLAT ROADS, NO ICE OR WATER ON THE ROAD. THE ENGINE WAS FULLY WARMED UP,AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED ON A REGULAR BASIS AT PRESCRIBED INTERVALS BY OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. THIS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION HAS OCCURRED 5 OR 6 TIMES OVER THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE WAS FEBRUARY 22, 2010 WHEN I RE-ENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL FROM A SPEED OF 50 MPH TO THE PREVIOUS SET POINT OF 55 MPH. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 65 MPH AND WAS STILL GAINING SPEED WHEN I DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE RESPONDED TO TURNING OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL, THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED NORMALLY, AND I WAS ABLE TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF ME ON THE HIGHWAY. ALSO CHECKED ELECTRICAL AS LIGHTING SWITCHED FROM FRONT TO BACK SEAT FOR NO REASON. TOLD JUST REPROGRAM NEEDED & OK. AFTER THAT SERVICE HAD ONE MORE INCIDENT WHEN OVER MCDONALD'S MILL VALLEY - DRIVE THRU - VEHICLE AHEAD MOVED & I TRIED TO JUST MOVE SLOWLY TOO. ACCELERATED MUCH HIGHER THAN FOOT PRESSURE ON PEDAL. HIT BRAKES HARD & JUST MISSED CAR AHEAD OF ME. CAR WAS STOPPED, BUT ACCELERATION REMAINED HIGHER FOR 30-45 SEC. LINE HELD UP UNTIL ACCELERATION SEEMED OK. THEN MOVED AHEAD W NO ISSUES. NOW NO INCIDENTS X APPROX. 2 MONTHS. NOTE PEDAL ACTION HAS ALWAYS APPEARED OK. NOT HUMAN ERROR. FOUND NO KNOWN CAUSE. VEHICLE: 2006 TOYOTA RAV 4 PROBLEM: STUCK ACCELERATOR DATE OF INCIDENT: DECEMBER 24, 2009 MY WIFE WAS LEAVING WORK ON THE 24TH OF DECEMBER. OUR CAR WAS PARKED FACING UPHILL. AS SHE WAS LEAVING HER PARKING SPACE, SHE DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR SLIGHTLY AND THE CAR "TOOK OFF" ON ITS OWN. SHE ENDED UP HITTING A CAR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD, THEN GOING OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE, OVER A SIDEWALK, SNOW BANK AND THEN HITTING A BUILDING. I HAVE REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO TOYOTA WHO WENT TO MY LOCAL DEALER TO CHECK IT OUT. THEY CLAIM THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING AND SENT A LETTER TO MY HOUSE STATING THAT FACT. THE WEATHER CONDITIONS THAT DAY WERE SLOPPY SNOW. AS MENTIONED, THE CAR WAS FACING UPHILL SO THE SLIPPERY CONDITIONS ACTUALLY ACTED IN HER FAVOR. WE HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA RAV 4. ON DEC.18, MY WIFE, PULLED OUT OF A PARKING LOT AND THE VEHICLE STARTED ACCELERATING FASTER THAN SHE WANTED TO GO. SHE PUSHED ON THE FOOT BRAKE BUT COULD NOT SLOW OR STOP THE VEHICLE. WHEN SHE LET UP ON THE BRAKE, IT SPED UP MORE, AND EVEN APPLYING THE BRAKE AS HARD AS SHE COULD, IT DID NOT STOP. SHE BUMPED INTO THE BACK OF ANOTHER SUV AND THEN A LITTLE FURTHER ON JUMPED THE CURB AND SMASHED INTO A CONCRETE FILLED STEEL POLE WHICH DID MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT FRONT. SHE THEN MANAGED TO TURN INTO A PARKING LOT AND GOT IT STOPPED USING THE HAND BRAKE. MY INSURANCE COMPANY OPTED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. AT MY REQUEST, THE BODY SHOP TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHO CHECKED IT OUT MECHANICALLY AND ELECTRICALLY AND, OF COURSE, DECLARED ALL SYSTEMS WITHIN "FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS" IN THINKING BACK, MY WIFE CAN RECALL OTHER TIMES WHEN THE RAV 4 SEEMED TO ACCELERATE MORE THAN SHE EXPECTED, BUT SHE WAS ABLE TO CONTROL IT. SHE HAS BEEN DRIVING OVER 50 YEARS AND IS A CAUTIOUS DRIVER. DURING THIS WILD RIDE SHE CONSCIENTIOUSLY CHECKED TO SEE THAT SHE WAS PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND NOT THE ACCELERATOR. 2/25/08 INSTANCE #1: I HAVE HAD THREE INSTANCES OF EMISSIONS COMPONENTS ON MY 2006 2WD RAV4 V6 BEING DAMAGED IN THE 65000 MILES I HAVE DRIVEN IT. THE FIRST INSTANCE MANIFESTED ITSELF WHEN THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL, TRACTION CONTROL AND CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS SHUT-OFF AND LIGHTS IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CAME ON. A DAMAGED "CHARCOAL CANISTER" WAS REPLACED AT THE DEALER UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY ON 2/25/08. (THIS OCCURRED A SECOND TIME ON 3/19/09 AFTER AN EVAPORATION FILTER WAS DAMAGED ON 3/3/09 AFTER DRIVING A MILE IN LESS THAN AN INCH OF WET SNOW. EACH EVENT SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL, TRACTION CONTROL AND CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS AND THE ASSOCIATED SYSTEM LIGHTS IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CAME ON. THE DEALER FELT THE DAMAGE WAS DUE TO MY OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE AND AT FIRST DENIED SUBMITTING IT TO MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. ON MARCH 17, 2008, WHILE COASTING INTO A PARKING SPACE WITH HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE REVVED AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD UNDERGONE REGULARLY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE BEFORE THE CRASH OCCURRED. THE WEATHER WAS DRY ON THE DAY OF THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS RELEASED BACK TO THE CONTACT; HOWEVER, IT HAD TO BE TAKEN BACK TO THE SHOP DUE TO RIDING ROUGHLY WHEN PLACED INTO OVERDRIVE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER WAS LOCKING EVERYTIME THE TRANSMISSION WAS PLACED INTO OVERDRIVE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THE CONTACT WAS NOT CITED. WE PURCHASED A 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 4X4 LIMITED IN MARCH 2006. SINCE THE DAY WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, WE HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE ACCELERATION EITHER NOT RESPONDING OR LURCHING FORWARD. WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP, IT OCCASIONALLY TAKES THE CAR SEVERAL SECONDS TO ENGAGE AND ACCELERATE. OTHER TIMES, WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO STOP AT A LIGHT OR SIGN, THE CAR CONTINUES TO REV THE RPM''S AND LURCHES FORWARD. IN ORDER TO STOP THE CAR FROM LURCHING FORWARD, WE HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND SLAM ON THE BREAKS. THIS IS VERY SCARY IF YOU ARE COMING UP TO AN ACTIVE INTERSECTION. I PURCHASED A 2006 TOYOTA RAV4 LIMITED 4 CYL IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY OF 2006. I NOTICED A PROBLEM IN ACCELERATION/HESITATION AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT A WEEK. I HAVE EXPERIENCED ACCELERATION PROBLEMS ON A DAILY BASIS. STEADY PRESSURE ON THE ACCELERATOR YIELDS NO RESPONSE, OR A STUTTER AS THOUGH THE CAR IS ABOUT TO STALL. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE CAR MOVING IS TO PUSH THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, AT WHICH POINT THE ENGINE RACES AND THE CAR SPEEDS UP. THIS HESITATION HAPPENS THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED I WAS PULLING ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY FROM A SIDE STREET AND WAS NEARLY REAR-ENDED BECAUSE THE CAR SIMPLY WOULD NOT GO (UNTIL I SLAMMED THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR). THIS IS VERY UNSAFE FOR EVERYDAY DRIVING. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHO STATED THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS 'NORMAL' FOR TOYOTAS AND SOMETHING I NEEDED TO GET USED TO. THEY DID CHECKOUT THE CAR AND SAID NO ERROR CODES WERE GENERATED AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *NM

THE CAR USES SOME TYPE OF ELECTRONIC SENSORS TO DETERMINE THE CHANGE IN GEARS WHEN ACCELERATING AND IT IS VERY ERRATIC. ONE TIME IT GOES SMOOTHLY AND ANOTHER IT TAKES OFF, VERY DANGEROUS AND UNSTABLE. TOYOTA WON'T ACKNOWLEDGE THIS ISSUE BUT 90% OF THE OWNERS WILL TESTIFY TO IT. THERE IS A PROBLEM IN ACCELERATION DELAY/THROTTLE LAG IN THE 2006 TOYOTA RAV4. AFTER TAKING DELIVERY JAN 06 AND WHILE DRIVING 12K MILES, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED ERRATIC ACCELERATION PROBLEMS. FROM COMPLETE STOPS OR ROLLING STARTS, WHEN TURNING CORNERS IN EITHER DIRECTION, ON UPHILL GRADES, OR ATTEMPTED PASSING, THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT DELAY IN DELIVERING FORWARD SPEED REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH PRESSURE IS PUT ON THE FOOT FEED. AFTER THE DELAY, FORWARD SPEED IS DELIVERED SUDDENLY, CAUSING THE CAR TO LURCH FORWARD AND THE ENGINE TO RACE. THE FORWARD SPEED LAGS CONTINUOUSLY UP HILLS, DEPENDING ON THE GRADE. UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, EVERYDAY DRIVING IS HAZARDOUS AND I HAVE HAD MANY CLOSE CALLS. THE TOYOTA DEALER DISMISSED OUR INITIAL COMPLAINTS, STATING THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS 'NORMAL', AND WE PUT UP WITH THIS FOR TOO LONG BEFORE INSISTING THE VEHICLE BE CHECKED OUT. THE DEALER SAID NO ERROR CODES WERE GENERATED AND NO TSB'S HAD BEEN ISSUED AND THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM IN ORDER TO FIX IT, AS THOUGH WE'RE THE ONLY PEOPLE WITH THIS COMPLAINT. AFTER SOME PERSISTENCE ON OUR PART, THEY GAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THEY'RE WELL AWARE OF A PROBLEM, BUT SEEM TO BE STONE WALLING WHILE LAYING THE BLAME ON TOYOTA TO ISSUE A FIX. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS FAULT IN THE NEW RAV4. MY ONLINE RESEARCH HAS NOW REVEALED THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME PROBLEM ON CONSUMER WEBSITES SUCH AS TOYOTA NATION AND EDMUNDS. FOR TOYOTA DEALERS TO PRETEND THIS IS AN ISOLATED, INSIGNIFICANT PROBLEM IS, AT THE VERY LEAST, DECEPTIVE AND MAY PROVE TO BE CRIMINAL, AS THIS ACCELERATION PROBLEM COULD WELL LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 35MPH ON A CITY STREET, THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD WITHOUT WARNING INTO THE RIGHT SIDE OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STOPPED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION BY TURNING OFF THE IGNITION AND ENGAGING THE EMERGENCY PARK BRAKE. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THERE WAS MODERATE DAMAGE TO EACH OF THE VEHICLES. THE POLICE WERE ON THE SCENE AND A REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP TO AWAIT INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.

IF YOU DEPRESS ACCELERATOR IMMEDIATELY UPON TAKING OFF THIS DOES NOT OCCUR BUT, IT CAUSES YOU TO OVER CORRECT STUMBLING BY SPEEDING QUICKLY. IF YOU NEED TO ACCELERATE, THE ENGINE WILL NOT RESPOND TO A NORMAL DEPRESSION OF GAS PEDAL. YOU NEED TO DEPRESS IT QUICKLY TO CAUSE THE ENGINE TO GO INTO PASSING GEAR ETC. MY "AUTO WISE" SON HAS SUGGESTED THAT THE GAS PEDAL DRIVE BY WIRE SENSORS COULD BE FAILING OR BE BAD ETC. *NM

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER BEING PARKED IN A PARKING LOT FOR 2 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES, THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED. IT WAS PLACED IN REVERSE AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. WHILE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE PROCEEDED AT AN EXCEPTIONAL SPEED. IN AN ATTEMPT TO STOP THE MOMENTUM OF THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT PLACED THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL. DURING THE INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE MADE AN EXTREMELY LOUD NOISE AS IF THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT 100 MPH. THE BRAKES WERE USED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE KEY WAS TURNED TO THE OFF POSITION AND THE VEHICLE WAS LATER DRIVEN HOME. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE SERVICE DEALER FOR INSPECTION.
