The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle could not be aligned. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was previously taken to the local dealer to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V596000 (Suspension). The vehicle was taken to a tire shop, and the contact was informed that the rear tie rods were welded, and an alignment was impossible. The manufacturer was contacted, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 182,342.

Additionally, the contact stated that the check engine warning light, the traction control warning light, and an unknown warning light were illuminated. Subframe rusted in half, the only way I found it was when we put new shocks on it. It peeled off about 1/2 the tread on a brand new tire. Dangerous, if passengers side rear tire would've broke loose it would throw rear of car into oncoming traffic!

WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN THE HIGHWAY THE THERE WAS A POP SOUND IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE AND I WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS LEAD TO THE RAV4 COMING TO A STOP AFTER IMPALING ON GUARDRAIL FROM FREEWAY SPEEDS. UPON INSPECTION IT APPEARED THAT THE REAR LEFT WHEEL WAS THE CAUSE AND WAS AT AN ANGLE INSTEAD OF BEING PERPENDICULAR TO THE GROUND LIKE THE REST OF THE WHEELS.

AFTER PROCESSING THE SAFETY RECALL ON THE REAR TIE RODS WHICH CONTROL THE TOE OF THE WHEELS, I DROVE 20K MILES AND THEN NEEDED TO DO ANOTHER ALIGNMENT ON THE REAR OF THE CAR. THE TOE OF BOTH WHEELS ARE OUT OF ADJUSTMENT TO THE LEFT BRINGING THE CAR'S STEERING OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND CAUSING PREMATURE TIRE WEAR. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA, AS THE SAFETY RECALL PROCESS WAS TO CAP THE TOE ADJUSTER BAR ON THE REAR TIE RODS AND FILL THEM WITH EPOXY, THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS WAS TO REPLACE THE TIE RODS AND REPEAT THE SAFTY RECALL BUT THIS TIME THEY WOULD CHARGE ME $720 DOLLARS. SO EVEN THOUGH THIS PART HAS HAD SEVERAL SAFETY RECALLS ON IT AND THAT THE FINAL SOLUTION BY TOYOTA WAS TO HOLD IT TOGETHER WITH GLUE. THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND FIGURE OUT A LONG TERM SOLUTION THAT ALLOWS FOR THE CAR TO RETAIN ITS ORIGINAL ABILITY TO DO A PROPER ALIGNMENT.

MY VEHICLE WAS ONE OF APPROXIMATELY 750,000 VEHICLES INVOLVED IN TOYOTA'S 2013 CSJ SAFETY RECALL. HOWEVER, IT WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE AUGUST 2016 GOV SAFETY RECALL, AS WERE ABOUT 420,000 OTHER VEHICLES. ACCORDING TO TOYOTATALK.COM, SINCE SO MANY OF THESE RAV4S WERE EXCLUDED FROM THE G0V SAFETY RECALL WHICH CALLS FOR MANDATORY REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM MOUNTING HARDWARE, THIS MEANS THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF AFFECTED RAV4 VEHICLES ON AMERICAN HIGHWAYS WITH EITHER: 1. POTENTIALLY RUSTING AND/OR CORRODING MOUNTING HARDWARE FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM THAT HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED 2. THE INABILITY TO HAVE A REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT WHICH COULD LEAD TO DANGEROUS TIRE WEAR THE TITLE OF THE ARTICLE ON TOYOTATALK.COM IS "THE DEFECTIVE TOYOTA RAV4 TUBE-STYLE REAR SUSPENSION ARM." IT WAS POSTED ON APRIL 28, 2018. HE STATED THAT IF IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO SUBMIT A WARRANTY CLAIM ON MY VEHICLE'S TIRES PURCHASED THERE, THAT THE TIRE WITH UNEVEN WEAR WOULD BE EXCLUDED. A PHOTO OF THAT TIRE ACCOMPANIES THIS COMPLAINT. IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY, ON NOVEMBER 9, 2018, AFTERMARKET REAR SUSPENSION ARMS WERE INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE. THE INSTALLATION WAS PAID BY ME OUT OF POCKET. A REDACTED COPY OF THE RECEIPT ACCOMPANIES THIS COMPLAINT. SINCE RECALLS ARE VIN SPECIFIC, TOYOTA HAS NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE TO SAY ABOUT THESE CONCERNS. BE THAT AS IT MAY, A COMPLAINT WAS FILED WITH TOYOTA ON NOVEMBER 5, 2018. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH TOYOTA AND ITS LACK OF ACTION. IT IS MY DEEPEST HOPE THAT SOMETHING CAN BE DONE TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

WE HAD RECALL GOV ON MY TOYOTA RAV4 ON 1/18/18 81000 MILES. AT THIS TIME I ALSO HAD NEW FRONT STRUTS AND REAR SHOCKS INSTALLED WITH A FRONT AND REAR ALIGNMENT. THEN 8000 MILES LATER AFTER THE FIX IN OCTOBER I NOTICED EXCESSIVE TIRE WEAR. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR NEW REAR BRAKES AND AN ALIGNMENT. AT THAT TIME WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY COULD NO LONGER PERFORM A REAR ALIGNMENT DUE TO THIS RECALL "FIX" THAT PERMANENTLY SEALED IT INTO ONE PLACE. WE WERE TOLD THAT IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR BACK INTO ALIGNMENT, WE WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE REAR TOE BAR. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED WITH AN ADJUSTABLE REAR TIE ROD, AND TOYOTA'S SOLUTION TO AN ENGINEERING FLAW IS TO MAKE THE REAR TIE ROD NO LONGER ADJUSTABLE, THUS COSTING THE CONSUMER HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX A SIMPLE ALIGNMENT ISSUE. IT IS NOT FEASIBLE OR FAIR TO EXPECT THE CONSUMER TO PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE, WHEN TOYOTA CREATED THE ISSUE WITH THEIR "FIX" INSTEAD OF CREATING A REPLACEMENT REAR TOE THAT IS ADJUSTABLE LIKE THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED WITH WHEN I PURCHASED IT. THIS FIX HAS CREATED A NEW SAFETY ISSUE WITH TIRE WARE AND HANDLING ISSUES. BEFORE THE FIX I WAS EXPERIENCED NEITHER OF THESE ISSUES.
THE RECALL ON THE REAR SUSPENSION EPOXIED THE BAR IN PLACE. NOW IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DO AN ALIGNMENT. TIRES ARE WEARING UNEVENLY AND VSC LIGHT IS ON ALL THE TIME.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000.

TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION AND SUBSEQUENTLY REPAIRED MY VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THE FIX IS INADEQUATE. AFTER THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM (TIE ROD) IS EPOXIED INTO A FIXED POSITION, THE REAR TIRES CAN NO LONGER BE REALIGNED WITHOUT REPLACING THE ENTIRE SUSPENSION ARM. THIS FIX IS INADEQUATE AND PLACES UNDUE FINANCIAL BURDENS ON THE RAV4 OWNERS.

THIS VEHICLE HAD THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM RECALL (NHTSA 16V596000) . WHEN THE DEALERSHIP DID THE RECALL THEY SEALED THE PARTS IN EPOXY, THE CAR IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT AGAIN IN LESS THAN I YEAR. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS BEING TOLD THAT IT WILL COST $700 TO GET THE ALIGNMENT DONE. THE SUSPENSION HAS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF THE EPOXY. THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE ONE YEAR WARRANTY OF THE RECALL. TOYOTA SHOULD BE PAYING FOR THIS SINCE THEY DID NOT CORRECT THE ISSUE PROPERLY DURING THE RECALL AND NOW THE CAR CAN NOT HAVE REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENTS. I CANNOT GET A ROUTINE ALIGNMENT BECAUSE OF THE EPOXY USED DURING THE RECALL. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.

IN LATE SUMMER/EARLY FALL 2016 MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 BEGAN EXPERIENCING REAR SUSPENSION, ALIGNMENT, AND TIRE WEAR PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TOYOTA RECALL AT THE TIME, ALTHOUGH MY CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. WHEN MY MECHANIC EXAMINED THE CAR, HE SAID IT MADE NO SENSE THAT TOYOTA'S SOLUTION IN THEIR SECOND SUSPENSION RECALL WAS TO EPOXY PIECES IN PLACE AND NOT ALLOW THE VEHICLE'S SUSPENSION TO ADJUST TO MOVEMENT ON THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING. I HAD TO ARGUE WITH THE DEALERSHIP WHO SOLD THE CAR TO GET THEM TO MAKE THE PROPER REPAIRS (PERFORM THE RECALL WORK ON MY CAR) AT NO CHARGE TO ME. THE DAMAGED RUINED MY RELATIVELY NEW TIRES AND I HAD TO GET ANOTHER SET. RECENTLY DURING GENERAL SERVICING, MY MECHANIC DISCOVERED THE SAME TIRE WEAR PROBLEM AND THAT THE REAR TIRES ARE SEVERELY TILTING INWARD, AND THE MOST RECENT REPAIR BY THE DEALER WAS DONE USING A SOLID TIE BAR. IN MY MECHANIC'S PROFESSIONAL OPINION (HE'S BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR SEVERAL DECADES AND DOES CONTRACT WORK FOR A GOVERNMENT ENTITY), THAT KIND OF REPAIR SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DONE WITH THAT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT BECAUSE IT WOULD LEAD TO THE FAILURE AND DAMAGE I'M EXPERIENCING AGAIN. IF THE SAME RECALL "FIX" THAT WAS PERFORMED ON MY CAR IS BEING PERFORMED ON ALL OTHERS THAT WERE PART OF THE 3RD RECALL AND BEYOND, OTHER VEHICLES MAY BE IN DANGER OF FAILED PARTS THAT COULD CAUSE LOSS OF STEERING, AS NOTED PER PREVIOUS RECALLS. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO THE DEALER, DISTRICT MANAGER, AND DANICA SORENSON AT TOYOTA WITHOUT SUCCESS. MY CLAIM IS BEING DENIED DESPITE THE EVIDENCE OF AN ONGOING SUSPENSION PROBLEM. MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 WAS TAKEN TO NORTHERN LAKES AUTO IN HAYWARD WI FOR AN ALIGNMENT, AT WHICH WE WERE TOLD THAT THE REAR TOE WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND NEEDED TO BE LOOKED AT BY THE DEALER. THE RECALL WORK DONE IN 2014 AT A TOYOTA DEALER IN COLORADO SPRINGS CO INVOLVED APPLYING AN EPOXY THAT MADE THIS PART NO LONGER ADJUSTABLE. ON 7/28/17, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN THE TOYOTA DEALER, WHICH FAILED AN ALIGNMENT CHECK AT THE REAR TOE. WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY COULD NO LONGER PERFORM A REAR ALIGNMENT DUE TO THIS RECALL "FIX" THAT PERMANENTLY SEALED IT INTO ONE PLACE. WE WERE TOLD THAT IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR BACK INTO ALIGNMENT, WE WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE REAR TOE BAR FOR A COST OF 600 DOLLARS. WE CONTACTED THE CORPORATE OFFICE AND WERE OFFERED NOTHING TO FIX THIS ISSUE. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED WITH AN ADJUSTABLE REAR TIE ROD, AND TOYOTA'S SOLUTION TO AN ENGINEERING FLAW IS TO MAKE THE REAR TIE ROD NO LONGER ADJUSTABLE, THUS COSTING THE CONSUMER HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX A SIMPLE ALIGNMENT ISSUE. IT IS NOT FEASIBLE OR FAIR TO EXPECT THE CONSUMER TO PAY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS FOR AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE, WHEN TOYOTA CREATED THE ISSUE WITH THEIR "FIX" INSTEAD OF CREATING A REPLACEMENT REAR TOE THAT IS ADJUSTABLE LIKE THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED WITH WHEN I PURCHASED IT. THE CAR IS WEARING OUT THE TIRES IN THE REAR CUPPING BOTH OF THEM ON THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE, AND THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE TO ME AND MY WIFE AND MY 14 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. THERE HAVE BEEN TWO SAFETY RECALLS ON THE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS OF 2006 TO 2011 TOYOTA RAV 4S. I HAD BOTH RECALL REMEDY PROCEDURES PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE. THE SECOND RECALL REMEDY INVOLVED SEALING THE ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION ARMS WITH AN EPOXY WHICH MAKES THEM NON-ADJUSTABLE IN THE FUTURE. I HAD THIS PERFORMED 6/4/14. THIS REMEDY ALSO RENDERS THE REAR WHEELS UNABLE TO BE ALIGNED. THEREFORE, IF THE REAR WHEELS GO OUT OF ALIGNMENT, THE REAR SUSPENSION HAS TO BE REPLACED. SO INSTEAD OF A $60 ALIGNMENT CHARGE, THE CUSTOMER IS NOW SUBJECT TO A $480 REPLACEMENT CHARGE EVERY TIME THEIR CAR NEEDS REALIGNMENT. I PUT NEW TIRES ON MY CAR ON 12/19/2014. ON 1/1/17, MY MECHANIC NOTICED OUTER EDGE TIRE WEAR ON BOTH REAR TIRES SUGGESTING AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE. ON 1/18/17, SEARS CONFIRMED ONLY REAR WHEELS OUT OF ALIGNMENT. ON 1/27/17, LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER CONFIRMED REAR WHEELS OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND SAID $480 REPLACEMENT OF REAR SUSPENSION ARMS WAS ONLY SOLUTION. THE LOCAL SERVICE MANAGER SAID THEY NEW THERE WOULD BE PROBLEMS WHEN THIS RECALL REMEDY WAS PUT INTO PLACE BY TOYOTA. MY REAR TIRES WERE RUINED AT 24,000 MILES. I ASKED TOYOTA TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT (CASE NO. 1701201908). THEY REFUSED AND SAID IT WAS A DECISION MADE AT THE US REGIONAL MANAGER LEVEL THAT WAS ACCEPTED BY TOYOTA NATIONAL. I REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES AND THE REAR SUSPENSION ARMS. I OPTED FOR AFTER MARKET ADJUSTABLE REAR ARMS AT A COST OF $222 PLUS ALIGNMENT. I ASSUME I AM NOW AT MORE RISK ON THE HIGHWAY. TOYOTA FORCED THIS DECISION BY PROVIDING A NON-ADJUSTABLE SOLUTION FOR A FAULTY ADJUSTABLE PART. THEIR DECISION NOW COSTS CUSTOMERS $480 EVERY TIME THEY NEED A $60 ALIGNMENT. I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET IN WEST HAVEN CT (NEAR 195 W SPRING ST) WHEN I HEARD A METALIC NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR, VEERING INTO THE INCOMING TRAFFIC LANE. I WAS DRIVING < 25 MPH AND THE PAVEMENT WAS DRY, AND MANAGED TO PARK THE CAR ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO CARS IN THE INCOMING LANE, AND THERE WAS NO INJURY. MY WIFE WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT NEXT TO ME. UPON INSPECTING THE CAR, I DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR RIGHT WHEEL WAS TILTED AT AN ANGLE RELATIVE TO THE BODY OF THE CAR. I CALLED AAA (TIME WAS AROUND 7:45 A.M.) AND A TOWING TRUCK ARRIVED , AND TOWED MY CAR TO A NEARBY GARAGE (ROBERT'S SERVICE CENTER, INC., 216 BUCKINGHAM AVE, MILFORD, CT). I DID NOT CALL POLICE OR TAKE A PICTURE. THE SERVICE SUPERVISOR INFORMED ME THAT AFTER INSPECTING THE CAR, THEY FOUD THAT THE REAR FORWARD CONTROL ARM HAD FAILED (COME APART AT THE MIDDLE). THIS CONTROL ARM WAS THE SUBJECT OF A SAFETY RECALL BY TOYOTA IN 2013, AND MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT GIRARD TOYOTA IN NEW LONDON, CT, AT THE TIME OF THE RECALL. THE FAILED ARM STILL HAD THE REPAIR STICKER ON IT. THE SHOP REMOVED AND REPLACED THE FAILED CONTROL ARM AND THE ONE THAT WAS STILL INTACT ON THE LEFT REAR WHEEL. THE CAR IS NOW DRIVABLE. I BELIEVE THAT THE OUTCOME IS LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC IF IT HAD HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO TOYOTA AND WAS GIVEN THE CASE NUMBER 1604300620. I SPOKE TO A CASE MANAGER, MR. THORN. MY INTENTIONS WERE TO; 1) ALERT TOYOTA THAT A RECALL FIX HAS FAILED ON MY CAR; 2) I WANTED A TOYOTA DEALER TO INSPECT MY CAR FOR AN INDEPENDENT EVALUATION AND TO ASSURE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE; 3) REIMBURSE ME FOR THE COST OF REPAIRS. HE ACKNOWLEDGED RECEIVING THE INFORMATION, BUT INDICATED THAT A TOYOTA DEALER CANNOT GUARANTEE A THIRD PARTY WORK. HE ASKED ME TO FILE MY EXPENSES, BUT WITH NO ASSURANCE THAT IT WILL BE HONORED.

NOT ENOUGH EPOXY WAS USED ON ONE END OF THE SUSPENSION ARM, SO THERE IS A GAP IN THE EPOXY THAT EXTENDS TO THE ADJUSTING TUBE NUT. THAT SIDE IS ALSO OUT OF ALIGNMENT. THE TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER DID NOT REDO THE FIX AS REQUESTED. THE SERVICE MANAGER FORWARDED A PHOTO TO A DISTRICT REP TO MAKE A DECISION. OVER TWO WEEKS NOW WITHOUT A RESPONSE.

THERE WAS AN INTERMITTENT, LOUD CLUNK SOUND FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS EVENTUALLY DETERMINED THAT A REAR STABILIZER LINK WAS CORRODED AND FAILED. PARTS ON BOTH SIDES WERE REPLACED BASED ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER.

OUR 2007 RAV4 WAS SERVICED AT A TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER ON 8/11/2015. THE REAR ALIGNMENT WAS FOUND TO BE OUTSIDE OF THE SPECIFIED RANGE. THE REAR SUSPENSION ARMS (TIE RODS) WERE INSPECTED AND THE ALIGNMENT WAS ADJUSTED LAST YEAR AS PART OF RECALL 13V-383. AN EPOXY WAS APPLIED TO MAKE THESE PARTS NON-ADJUSTABLE AND SEAL THEM TO PREVENT CORROSION THAT HAS LED TO PART FAILURES. BOTH REAR TIE RODS ON OUR VEHICLE HAD ACTUALLY BEEN REPLACED IN JANUARY 2012 AFTER SUCH A FAILURE CAUSED US TO CRASH. CORRECTING THE REAR ALIGNMENT NOW REQUIRES REPLACING THESE PARTS AGAIN AND RE-APPLYING THE EPOXY FROM RECALL 13V-383, AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. I WAS QUOTED $750 + TAX ($660 ON TOP OF THE USUAL $90 ALIGNMENT CHARGE). WE HAVE NOT YET HAD THIS FIXED. I WROTE TO DANIEL C. SMITH OF NHTSA IN JUNE TO POINT OUT THIS PROBLEM BASED ON OTHER REPORTS, BEFORE REALIZING OUR VEHICLE WOULD HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. IF THE EPOXY DOES NOT PREVENT THE PART FROM ADJUSTING OUTSIDE OF SPECS, HOW WELL IS IT SEALING TO PREVENT CORROSION? NHTSA INFORMED ME THAT TOYOTA KNOWS OF 19 CONTINUED FAILURES IN VEHICLES THAT HAD REMEDY 13V-383 APPLIED (THE SECOND REMEDY FOR THIS SAFETY DEFECT). 12 REPORTS WERE FOR COMPLETE TIE ROD SEPARATION. TOYOTA SHOULD ALSO TRACK THESE ALIGNMENT CHANGES AS A POTENTIAL PRECURSOR TO FAILURES.

THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT ONLY THE FRONT ALIGNMENT COULD BE PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE DEALER REFUSED TO REMEDY THE REMOVAL OF THE EPOXY RESIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
JUST GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY AND WAS DRIVING ON CITY STREETS.STARTED HEARING SOME CREAKING NOISE, AND THEN A FEW CLUNKS AND A BANG/POP AS I WAS GOING AROUND A CORNER AT ABOUT 3-5MPH I PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY IN FRONT OF ME. I SEE MY RIGHT REAR TIRE HAS CAVED IN AND IS RUBBING AGAINST THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL WELL. AFTER JACKING UP THE CAR AND TAKING THE TIRE OFF I SEE THE ENTIRE BRAKE ASSEMBLY IS ROTATED IN, AND THE BOLTS HOLDING IT TO THE REAR SUSPENSION ARE BENT OUT OF PLACE. PERHAPS THIS IS THE RESULT OF THE BAND-AID EPOXY FIX FOR THE TOYOTA REAR SUSPENSION RECALL. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE!

WHILE TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY, THE REAR TIE ROD (SUSPENSION ARM) ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF OUR RAV4 SUDDENLY FAILED, CAUSING THE CAR TO SWERVE WILDLY OUT OF CONTROL AND CRASH INTO A CONCRETE DIVIDER. AFTER THE CAR CAME TO A STOP, THE AFFECTED WHEEL WAS FOUND TO BE TILTED ON AN ANGLE. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A MECHANICAL PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE RAV4 HAD 62,422 MILES AT THE TIME. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON DECEMBER 24, 2011 - PRIOR TO THE RELATED RECALLS 12V373000 (C0J) AND 13V383000 (CSJ). I WROTE TO TOYOTA EXECUTIVES IN JANUARY 2012. MY LETTER DESCRIBED OUR INCIDENT, AND I INCLUDED THREE SIMILAR REPORTS FROM OTHER DRIVERS FROM THE NHTSA WEBSITE AND AN INTERNET SEARCH. I WAS PUT IN CONTACT WITH A REPRESENTATIVE FROM TOYOTA EXECUTIVE OFFICES. I MAILED THE FAILED PART TO TOYOTA U.S.A. HEADQUARTERS IN FEBRUARY 2012 AFTER TAKING PHOTOS TO DOCUMENT THE PROBLEM. CORROSION WAS HIDDEN WITHIN THE TUBE OF THE SUSPENSION ARM. THE THREADS ON THE TIE ROD END HAD CORRODED, SO ONE PIECE COULD BE PULLED STRAIGHT OUT FROM THE OTHER PART WITHOUT HAVING TO UNSCREW IT. THE LOWER PART OF THE BOLT OR TIE ROD END WAS ALSO FRACTURED DUE TO THE CORROSION. AFTER FOLLOWING UP WITH TOYOTA EXECUTIVE OFFICES, I WAS INFORMED THAT THIS ISSUE WAS ALREADY KNOWN TO THEM, AND RESULTED FROM IMPROPER TORQUE APPLIED DURING A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. MY CAR PREVIOUSLY HAD A WHEEL ALIGNMENT AT AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER. TOYOTA OFFICIALLY STARTED THE RECALL PROCESS WITH THE NHTSA ABOUT A HALF YEAR LATER. WE WERE DRIVING 55MPH ON HIGHWAY 168 IN NORTH CAROLINA NORTH TOWARDS VIRGINIA COMING HOME FROM VACATION IN THE OUTER BANKS, NC. THE SERVICE REP AT THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME "THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE BUT THE SWAY BARS PREVENT THE CAR FROM ROLLING OVER." THIS SOUNDS LIKE A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO ME AND ALSO DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE RECALL ISSUE. THIS IS THE 6TH RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AND I HAVE SUBMITTED A REQUEST TO TOYOTA TO FIX THIS ISSUE AT NO COST. CONSIDERING TOYOTA DID NOT HAVE A SOLUTION TO THE REAR SUSPENSION RECALL AND FORCED IT'S OWNERS TO DRIVE WITH THE PROBLEM FOR MULTIPLE MONTHS EXPOSING US TO POTENTIAL DANGER, ASKING THEM TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AT NO COST IS REASONABLE. A COMPANY REP IS GOING TO COME OUT TO LOOK AT IT BECAUSE WE HAVE HAD ANOTHER EXACT FAILURE JUST RECENTLY." THE REP DECIDED HE DID NOT NEED TO SEE IT. (I'M SURE HE WAS ALREADY AWARE OF THE BIGGER PROBLEM TOYOTA WOULD BE FACING.) VEHICLE FACTS: 2007 RAV-4, MILEAGE: 43,185, ONE OWNER, GARAGE KEPT (EXCEPT FOR VACATIONS). LAST 27-POINT INSPECTION: (1-21-2012) 2 MONTHS BEFORE FAILURE. NO ITEMS IN THE SECTION TITLED "UNDER VEHICLE" WERE EVEN CHECKED OFF AS COMPLETED (GOOD OR BAD). THIS INCLUDED "SUSPENSION & STEERING LINKAGE". I PAID $778. TO HAVE BOTH LEFT & RIGHT SUSPENSION ASSEMBLIES REPLACED & AN ALIGNMENT. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT REIMBURSEMENT FROM TOYOTA, THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID "NO. THEY CONSIDER IT NORMAL "WEAR & TEAR". NOTE: CASES LIKE MINE ARE NOT GOING TO SHOW UP AS "TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS" BECAUSE I DIDN'T HIT ANYTHING OR ANYONE. MY 2007 RAV4 DRIVER SIDE REAR WINDOW WONT GO UP AND DOWN. THE DRIVER SIDE CONTROL SWITCH FOR THE REAR DRIVER SIDE WINDOW DOES NOT MOVE. THE SWITCH FOR THE REAR DRIVER SIDE WINDOW ON THE BACK DOOR DOES NOT WORK ALL THE TIME. WHEN IT DOES WORK JUST ONE TAP AND THE REAR WINDOW (DRIVER SIDE) GOES DOWN ALL THE WAY BY ITS SELF. THE OTHER THREE SWITCHES FOR THE WINDOWS AND THE OTHER THREE WINDOWS SEEM TO WORK AND RESPOND HOW THEY SHOULD. ONLY PROBLEM IS WITH THE REAR WINDOW AND THE SWITCH ON BOTH THE DRIVER DOOR AND THE REAR WINDOW DOOR (DRIVER SIDE). ALSO WHILE DRIVING TO WORK DRIVING APROX 10 MPH MY REAR PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL BENT IN TOWARD THE WHEEL WELL. THE TIE ROD WAS BROKE AND THE TIE ROD WAS VERY RUSTED . THE DEALER SAID IT WAS A FREAK OCCURRENCE AND FIXED IT WHILE UNDER WARRANTY. PROBLEM IS THAT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE REAR SUSPENSION (DRIVER SIDE) IS ALSO RUSTED BUT THEY DID NOT FIX IT AT THE SAME TIME. THIS HAPPENED JUNE 14TH AT ABOUT 6:10 AM I WAS NOT TOLD OF THE RECALL OF THIS TIE ROD ISSUE AT THE TIME OF IT GETTING FIXED . THEY PLAYED IT OFF AS IT WERE A FREAK OCCURRENCE.. THE CONTACT THEN NOTICED THAT THE LEFT REAR WHEEL WAS ON A 60 DEGREE ANGLE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT THE REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY WAS FRACTURED AND THE TREAD WAS STRIPPED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND OFFERED A NEW REAR ASSEMBLY IF THE CONTACT TRADED IN THE OLD PART. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY REPLACING THE REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY AND PERFORMING A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,883. WHEN TURNING RIGHT AT LOW SPEED, PASSENGER SIDE REAR TIE ROD ASSEMBLY FAILED AND WHEEL TURNED AT 45 DEGREE ANGLE, DISABLING THE AUTOMOBILE. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY, IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT. DEALERSHIP HAD PREVIOUSLY CHECKED A KNOCKING NOISE IN REAR, BUT WAS UNABLE TO FIND A PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS A DESIGN FAULT AND THAT THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH THREADS ON THE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY TO HOLD THE TIE ROD SUFFICIENTLY. I HAVE FOUND OTHER REPORTS OF THIS TIE ROD FAILURE. MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 HAD A REAR RIGHT WHEEL TIE ROD BREAK WHILE I WAS DRIVING WITH MY WIFE AND OUR ONE YEAR OLD CHILD IN THE VEHICLE. WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO SEE MY WIFE'S DOCTOR FOR HER MEDICAL CONDITION AT THE TIME. THANKFULLY WE HAD JUST MADE A TURN ON TO THE ON-RAMP OF THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY AND WERE MOVING AT A RELATIVELY SLOW SPEED. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF WE WERE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED WHEN THE TIE ROD BROKE, I MIGHT HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND HAD A TERRIBLE CRASH WITH SERIOUS INJURY (OR WORSE) TO OUR FAMILY AND POSSIBLY OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. AFTER SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET ABOUT TOYOTA RAV4 TIE ROD INCIDENTS, IT SEEMS THAT IT HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER RAV4 DRIVERS MANY TIMES ON ALL DIFFERENT MODEL YEARS OF THE VEHICLE. JUST LIKE US THEY ALL SAY THEY DID NOT HIT ANY POT HOLES OR OTHER OBJECTS TO HAVE CAUSED THE TIE ROD TO BREAK. THIS FAILING OF TIE RODS ON RAV4S SEEMS LIKE A MANUFACTURING OR DESIGN DEFECT. VEHICLE EXHIBITED A CLUNK AND RATCHET SOUND FROM REAR OF CAR WHEN DRIVING OVER SMALL BUMPS. PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO DEALER IN JANUARY 2010. WHILE THE NOISE WAS REPLICATED, THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. I WAS ASSURED THAT THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS WERE IN GOOD CONDITION. A LOCAL MECHANIC WAS ALSO CONSULTED WHO COULD NOT PINPOINT THE SOURCE OF THE SUSPENSION NOISE. APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR LATER I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL KICKED OUT AND WAS NO LONGER PARALLEL WITH THE VEHICLE. CAR WAS PRACTICALLY IMMOBILE. THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND TO BE A LINKAGE THAT STRIPPED ITSELF OUT. THE LINKAGE (TIE ROD?) HOLDS THE WHEEL IN PLACE. I HAD BOTH SIDES (RIGHT AND LEFT) REPAIRED JUST IN CASE THE LEFT SIDE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR WEAR. CAR REMAINS SLIGHTLY OUT OF ALIGNMENT (JUST BEYOND TOLERANCE) AS LINKAGE FAILURE CAUSED SUSPENSION COMPONENTS TO WARP OR BEND. *TR

SHE WAS ALSO INFORMED THE REAR TRAILING ARMS AND RODS WERE RUSTED THROUGH. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE HAD NOT RECURRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 43,000. .

I OWN A TOYOTA 2007 RAV4 WHICH AS BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIPS SHOP OVER 10 TIMES FOR THE SAME TWO ISSUES BRAKES AND GRINDING NOISE, PER TOYOTA EACH TIME IT WAS DIFFERENT, BUT I KNOW IT WAS THE SAME TWO THINGS. IT'S LIKE TOYOTA IS FALSIFYING CUSTOMER'S CAR ISSUES WITH THEIR OWN WORDS INSTEAD OF MAKING PROPER DOCUMENTATION. IT STARTED OFF WITH THE BRAKES WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR THEY WERE MAKING A NOISE AND WHEN GOING OVER SPEED BUMPS THE CAR WOULD ACCELERATE INSTEAD OF STOPPING, BUT I THOUGHT THIS MAY BE AN ADDED FEATURE TO THE NEW CAR. THE FIRST REAL INCIDENT IS WHEN THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP AND I CRASHED INTO TO A SIDE RAIL. IT DIDN'T DO MUCH DAMAGE AND IT TOTAL ABOUT $400.00. THE CAR IS MAKING A METALLIC NOISE IN THE SUSPENSION AND THIS WAS REPORTED, BUT EACH AND EVERY TIME TOYOTA'S TECHS DRIVES WITH ME AND MY HUSBAND WHILE WE DRIVING THE CAR TO DUPLICATE THE NOISE TOYOTA'S TECHS SAID THIS NOISE WAS NORMAL. WE KNEW THIS NOISE WASN'T NORMAL BEHAVIOR OF A BRAND NEW CAR, I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER AUTO SHOP AND THEY VERIFIED THAT THE NOISE WAS IN THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM, THAT TOYOTA WOULD NEED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE BECAUSE THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND IT WOULD COST ME MONEY TO LOCATE THE NOISE. WHEN I TOLD TOYOTA THEY SAID THEY GIVE A CAR UNTIL THEY COULD FIND THE ISSUE, BY LETTING THEIR FIELD TECH LOOK AT THE CAR, AND I ASKED WHEN THIS TECH WOULD BE AVAILABLE. I WANTED TO SEE THIS PERSON LOOK AT THE CAR, BUT THEY CAME UP WITH A MILLION AND ONE REASONS THAT I COULD MEET WITH THE TECH? AFTER TALKING TO PEOPLE FROM THEIR CORP OFFICE ABOUT THE METALLIC NOISE AND THE BRAKES TOYOTA SAID, 'SINCE WE CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR IT'S UNDER WARRANTY SO IF SOMETHING HAPPENS IT WILL BE FIXED'. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THIS CAR TO KILL ME OR MY FAMILY FOR THE COMPANY TO LOOK AT THEIR FAULTS BECAUSE ALL WE DID WAS PURCHASED A CAR FROM THE TOP OF THE LINE AUTO MAKERS TO GET THIS KIND OF TREATMENT? *TW
