The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to drive in a straight line and would erroneously drift out of the lane. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the rear suspension was faulty and needed to be repaired. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 16V596000 (Suspension) however, the failure occurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 157,000.

THEN INFORMED US THAT ALIGNMENT CAN'T BE CORRECTED DUE TO RECALL CSJ AND WE SHOULD DRIVE THE VEHICLE "AS IS' OR PAY FOR REPLACEMENT REAR TIE RODS. RECALL GOV WAS NOT PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE HAS INCREASED STEERING SENSITIVITY..

WE DROPPED OFF OUR 08 RAV 4 AT THE DEALER DUE TO (FAULTY RECALL REAR TIE ROD REPAIRS DONE IN 2013.) I PUT A NEW SET OF EXPENSIVE TIRES. NOW AT APPROX 34,000 MILES NOW I NOTICES EXTREME WEARING PREMATURELY WITH POSSIBLE SAFETY CONCERNS. OUR REPAIR SHOP SAID THE (REAR SUSPENSION TIE RODS) CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED DUE TO TOYOTA'S (RECALL REAR TIE RODS EPOXY GLUE!) THIS MEANS WHEEL ALIGNMENT CAN NOT BE PROPERLY. HOWEVER, WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS OR THE HIGHWAY YOU HEARD RUMBLING TIRE NOISES.

REAR SUSPENSION ARM (TIE RODS) FIXED UNDER RECALL CAMPAIGN 13V 383000 HAVE BECOME LOOSE. AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO THE MANUFACTURER AND TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS, TOYOTA HAS DENIED TO HELP WITH THE COST OF REPAIRS. OBVIOUSLY THEIR RECALL "FIX" HAS NOT WORKED AND I THINK THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS DUE TO THIS FACT.

WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN I HEARD A LOUD POP THEN A THUMP LIKE SOMETHING FALLING ON THE BACK FLOOR AND HITTING THE SIDE OF THE CAR. THOUGHT, AT FIRST IT WAS THE ITEMS IN MY BACK CARGO SPACE RISING UP AND FALLING AS IF I HIT A SPEED BUMP TOO FAST. I WAS ONLY TURNING ONTO ANOTHER ROAD WHEN I HEARD THE LOUD NOISE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A PLACE THAT GAVE FREE ESTIMATES AND THEY DISCOVERED THE DRIVERS SIDE SWAY BAR BOLT HAD BROKE OFF. THEY SAID IT WAS FROM RUSTING AND IT FINALLY GAVE. WAS RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE BOTH SIDES. NOT HAPPY AS I ALREADY PUT MUCH MONEY INTO THIS CAR AFTER I BOUGHT IT 3 YEARS AGO.

HAD THE FIX FOR THE 3RD RECALL OF THE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS IN JUNE 2014. BOTH SUSPENSION ARMS NOW ENCASED IN EPOXY AND WARNING LABELS APPLIED. RESULT OF POORLY ENGINEERED FIX IS THE INABILITY TO MAINTAIN REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITHOUT FULL REPLACEMENT OF BOTH SUSPENSION ARMS ON EVERY ALIGNMENT. TOYOTA'S FIX HAS CREATED UNDUE BURDEN OF COST ON OWNER TO MAINTAIN PROPER ALIGNMENT OR FOREGO ALIGNMENT AND HAVE RAPID WEAR OF TIRES DUE TO MISALIGNMENT RESULTING IN ADDED EXPENSE OF NEEDING TO REPLACE TIRES MORE OFTEN IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SAFE DRIVING. SEARCH OF THE INTERNET IS FINDING OTHER OWNERS HAVING SAME PROBLEM, I.E., BEARING THE COST FOR TOYOTA'S POOR INITIAL DESIGN AND POORLY THOUGHT OUT RECALL FIX.

I CONTACTED TOYOTA DIRECTLY AND WAS TOLD THERE IS A REMEDY BUT A SHORTAGE OF PARTS, AND TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO BE PUT ON THE WAITING LIST. REALLY? I'VE ALREADY WAITED 18 MONTHS. I DRIVE ON THE INTERSTATE EVERY DAY AND HEAR GRINDING NOISES COMING FROM THE BACK OF MY CAR.

AFTER SECOND RECALL ON REAR SUSPENSION THAT OCCURRED IN NOVEMBER 2016, I HAD TO REPLACE MY TIRES ABOUT 20K MILES PREMATURELY BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE WEAR ON INSIDE RIM. WHEN I WENT TO HAVE IT ALIGNED, I WAS TOLD THAT THE PARTS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED TO ALIGN THEM HAD STICKERS ON THEM IDENTIFYING THEM AS HAVING BEEN PART OF THE RECALL AND SAYING THAT THEY ARE NOW NON ADJUSTABLE. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM BECAUSE I MUST HAVE DRIVEN OVER A CURB OR A POTHOLE BEFORE THE EPOXY HAD SET IN ORDER FOR THE CAR TO COME OUT OF ALIGNMENT. SO APPARENTLY NOW IF I DRIVE OVER A POTHOLE, INSTEAD OF A >$100 ALIGNMENT BILL, I WILL HAVE A $1000 BILL TO REPLACE THE REAR SUSPENSION. UNACCEPTABLE.

TOYOTA WANTS TO REPLACE MY REAR SUSPENSION ARMS, ALIGN MY WHEELS AND THE ENCASE ARMS IN EPOXY. THIS WILL PREVENT ANY FUTURE ALIGNMENTS TO MY CAR WITHOUT HAVING TO REPLACE THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM. SOMETHING THAT WAS DONE ON THE LAST RECALL OF THE FRONT END. HOWEVER THIS TIME THEY ARE REFUSING TO DO THE SAME THING. " THIS IS OBVIOUSLY UNACCEPTABLE, AS ENCASING THEM IN EPOXY WILL NEGATE ANY ABILITY TO ALIGN THE SUSPENSION FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. IF THIS IS OCCURRING ON THIS MODEL HOW MANY OTHERS ARE IDENTICAL, IF NO OTHER MODEL HAS ISSUE, THEN ISSUE NEW PARTS THAT HAVE THOSE DESIGN ASPECTS INCORPORATED.

A ROD IN THE RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION FAILED WHILE DRIVING. MY MECHANIC INFORMED ME IT WAS PART REPLACED IN A SAFETY RECALL, AND THAT THE LEFT SIDE PART WAS NEAR FAILURE AS WELL. THIS RECALL OCCURRED IN 20124 AND IS LABELED CSJ. MY MECHANIC RECOMMENDED I CONTACT TOYOTA. TOYOTA TOLD ME THERE WAS NO FURTHER ACTION ON THIS RECALL AND THE RECALL REPLACEMENT WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY HAD NO INTEREST IN THE SAFETY ASPECT; THEY DID NOT SEEM CONCERNED THAT PARTS ON BOTH SIDES HAD WERE FAILING AND THAT THIS MIGHT BE A SAFETY HAZARD FOR OTHERS.

I LOOKED AT ALL THE COMPLAINTS ALREADY FILED AND I HAVE THE SAME THING. MY MECHANIC AT A PRIVATE CAR SERVICE PLACE COULD NOT ALIGN MY TIRES BECAUSE THERE WAS A PERMANENT FIX PUT IN PLACE DURING A RECALL NOTICE THAT I RECEIVED BACK IN 2014. MY MECHANIC CALLED TOYOTA DEALER AND ASKED WHAT COULD BE DONE AND WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTA COULD REPLACE THE ARMS FOR $1,500. MY MECHANIC SAID HE COULD DO A RETRO FIT FOR $100 WHICH IS WHAT I TOLD HIM TO DO. MY MECHANIC WAS REALLY DISGUSTED ABOUT THE WAY THIS WAS HANDLED. HE SAID I WAS REALLY LUCKY THAT THE WEAR ON MY TIRES HAD NOT CAUSED ME AN ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY THAT I HAPPENED TO NOTICE THAT THE INSIDE RIM OF MY TIRES WAS WORN ON ALL 4 TIRES AND WENT TO THE SERVICE DEALER.

2008 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO REAR SUSPENSION ARM RUST AND FAILURE RECALL. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO PERFORM AN ALIGNMENT. HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO GET THE REAR SUSPENSION IN SPECIFICATION BECAUSE SUSPENSION ARMS WERE BENT. THE CONSUMER RECEIVED TWO SECOND OPINION, AND WAS INFORMED THE ARMS WERE NOT BENT. AT THIS TIME TOYOTA TIGHTENED THE CONTROL ARMS TO THE CORRECT TORQUE AND I BELIEVE COMPLETED ALIGNMENT. ABOUT 1 YR LATER, ON JAN.17, 2014 (78,847) MILES, THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS WHERE REPLACED, ALIGNMENT WAS DONE, AND EPOXY WAS APPLIED TO THE BOLTS FOR A PERMANENT FIX APPROVED BY TOYOTA. WHEN HAVING MY BRAKES REPLACED AT TOYOTA DEALER ON MAY 17, 2015 (101,475) MILES, THEY INFORMED ME MY REAR ALIGNMENT WAS OUT SLIGHTLY. I WAS TOLD THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS IS TO HAVE THE SAME JOB DONE, AS WAS DONE IN JANUARY 2014, AT A COST OF APPROX. $900.00. I WAS TOLD I MUST HAVE HIT A POT HOLE?? THIS WAS A TOYOTA RECALL FOR A DEFECT ON THEIR PART WITH THEIR PARTS. OBVIOUSLY, THE PERMANENT FIX DIDN'T WORK. I GUESS THEY WOULD EXPECT ME TO PAY EVERY TIME MY VEHICLES REAR COMES OUT OF ALIGNMENT TO PAY $900.00. THE REAR SUSPENSION WHEEL NUTS GAVE UP, WHICH CAUSED THE ENTIRE CAR GO TO THE DITCH. MY WIFE AND MY TWO KIDS WAS ON THE CAR, AND LUCKILY THEY GET OUT AND SAFELY STOPPED THE CAR. ALIGNMENT ON REAR WHEELS CANNOT BE PERFORMED BECAUSE OF SAFETY RECALL PERFORMED BY TOYOTA ON MY 2008 RAV4. THE RECALL WAS TO CORRECT A SAFETY ISSUE ON THE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS. THE REMEDY FOR THIS ISSUE DOES NOT ALLOW FOR ANY ADJUSTMENT TO CORRECT OUT OF ALIGNMENT ON THE REAR OF VEHICLE. THIS IS AN ABSURD CORRECTION OF A PROBLEM. WHY AREN'T ALL 2006-2011 RAV4 OWNERS UP IN ARMS ABOUT THE INABILITY TO ALIGN THE REAR OF THEIR VEHICLES? TODAY, 2/2/15 (3 MONTHS AND 2100 MILES LATER) IT IS NOW NOT WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS AT -1*52. I COMPLAINED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE FIX TO THE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARM WAS A PERMANENT FIX AND THE CAR'S REAR ALIGNMENT CAN NO LONGER BE CHANGED BECAUSE OF THE FIX. MY WIFE AND I HAVE CALLED THIS NUMBER MULTIPLE TIMES AND HAVE BEEN TRANSFERRED SEVERAL TIMES BUT REACHED NOWHERE. WE HAVE LEFT MULTIPLE MESSAGES BUT DON'T RECEIVE ANY PHONE CALL BACK FROM THEM. MY WIFE EVEN WENT THERE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT BUT THEY SIMPLY TOLD HER THAT THEY DON'T HAVE OPENING. THIS IS REGARDING A SAFETY RECALL FOR OUR CAR. I RECEIVED AN "URGENT SAFETY RECALL" FROM TOYOTA SOMETIME JAN - APRIL 2014, REGARDING "REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS (NO 1), ONE OF SEVERAL RECALL NOTICES I'VE RECEIVED SINCE OWNING THIS VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WHERE I CANNOT GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP, BECAUSE THE AFFECTED PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE WHEN I CALLED IN LATE MAY AND AGAIN TODAY. ADDITIONALLY, THE TIRES BECAME WORN PREMATURELY AND DAMAGED WITHIN FIVE WEEKS. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO PERFORM AN ALIGNMENT BECAUSE THE EPOXY HAD TO BE REMOVED PRIOR TO MAKING THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT WAS OFFERED A GOODWILL REPAIR BY THE MANUFACTURER, WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY REPLACE THE REAR ARMS HOWEVER, SHE WOULD ASSUME THE REPAIR COST OF THE ALIGNMENT AND THE EPOXY KIT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL FOUR NEW TIRES WERE PURCHASED. ALSO, NO REPAIRS COULD BE MADE TO THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE EPOXY WAS REMOVED. A SECOND RECALL SERVICE WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE AND THE REAR ARMS WERE REPLACED AS WELL AS EPOXY BEING ADDED TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 141,448.

AFTER MY CAR RECEIVED THE FIRST RECALL SERVICE (EARLY 2014) FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION, ABOUT 5000 MILES LATER I BEGAN TO HEAR NOISES AT FREEWAY SPEEDS FROM THE PASSENGER REAR TIRE AREA. NOT LONG AFTER THIS NOISE STARTED, I RECEIVED THE (MAILED FROM TOYOTA) SECOND RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE BACK SUSPENSION. THIS WAS IN SEPT 2013. EACH MONTH I CALL TOYOTA FOR THE SECOND RECALL SERVICE AND THEY NEVER "HAVE THE PARTS NECESSARY" FOR THE SECOND RECALL SERVICE. EACH TIME THERE IS NO "IDEA" WHEN THESE PARTS WILL BE IN. BEFORE THE START OF A 2000 MILE ROAD TRIP, I HAD AN OIL CHANGE AND COMPLAINED TO THE TOYOTA DEALER ABOUT A KNOCKING COMING FROM THE RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION. I WAS INFORMED THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE. WHILE DRIVING ALONG A HIGHWAY, I LOST TOTAL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, SWERVING IN ALL LANES OF TRAFFIC, AND ENDED UP DRIVING OFF THE ROAD - LUCKILY THERE WERE NO CARS AROUND OR I WOULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I RECEIVED A "INTERIM" RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA STATING THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM AND THAT FAILURE OF THE REAR TIE ROD COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. THEY INSTRUCTED OWNERS TO CALL ONLY IF THEY EXPERIENCED ANY STRANGE NOISES COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I DID NOTICE THAT RECENTLY ESPECIALLY WHEN BACKING UP THAT I WOULD HEAR A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I CALLED AND THEY SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE DAY AFTER I SCHEDULED MY VEHICLE TO BE LOOKED AT THE REAR SUSPENSION ARM NO. 1 SEPARATED WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY 4 LANE HIGHWAY. THE VIN WAS ELIGIBLE; HOWEVER THE DEALER REFUSED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE BECAUSE A DEFECT WAS NOT PRESENT DURING THE INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE DEFECTIVE TIRES WERE NOT REPLACED. AT AROUND 9:30 AM ON JULY 8, I WAS ON I-15 IN S. UTAH WHEN MY RIGHT REAR TIE ROD FAILED. VERY SCARY AND I WAS LUCKY I DID NOT END UP ROLLED OVER IN THE DITCH, HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE, OR GET HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. I HAD NO IDEA WHY MY CAR WAS SO SUDDENLY OUT OF CONTROL. I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT I HAD BLOWN A FRONT WHEEL. THERE WAS NO PREVIOUS WARNING, SUCH AS A SHIMMY OR VIBRATION OR ANY STEERING ISSUES AT ALL. I ASKED THE TOW TRUCK TO TAKE ME TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHICH WAS ABOUT 50 MILES AWAY. HOWEVER, HE CONVINCED ME THAT IT WAS SIMPLE TO REPLACE THE TIE ROD AND SINCE MY RAV4 WAS A 2008, AFTERMARKET PARTS WOULD BE EASY TO GET FROM NAPA. IT WAS A SUNDAY, SO I ENDED UP GETTING THE CAR DROPPED OFF AT GOODYEAR IN CEDAR CITY, SINCE I WOULD NEED AN ALIGNMENT AFTER THE NEW TIE ROD WAS PUT IN. MY CAR IS ONLY LIKE 2 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE PROBLEM WITH THE SHOCKS BEFORE AT LIKE 20K MILES ONLY. TOYOTA HAD FIXED MY LEFT REAR SHOCKS ONCE BEFORE TOO.
