Steering becomes very hard to control with no slack and in the wheel and occasionally it feels like you hit ice and sliding when you change lanes, happens on dry paved road without warning. On August 10 2022 I was pulling slowly into a parking spot with foot lightly on brake to control forward motion car attempted to surge /accelerate . I stepped firmly on brake and since car was nearly stopped I put it in to park. RPM's went up dramatically and then car reverted to normal rpms. I estimate that the entire process.I estimate that the entire process took place in about 30 seconds or less. I immediately took vehicle to the Toyota dealer and they presumably checked it out and found no problems with vehicle. They "deemed it accidental accelerator pedal engagement by customer" which it was definitely not! A similar situation occurred about 3 months earlier. That time I was pulling slowly into traffic and suddenly car tried to accelerate. I pressed firmly on brake pedal and acceleration stopped. Entire event was very brief seconds and I ignored it as a possible anomaly not requiring attention. I reported that to dealer as well when I took it in for the 10 August incident.

I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND ENTERING A FREEWAY RAMP TO ANOTHER FREEWAY IN A TURN AND I LET MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND THE THROTTLE STUCK AND ACTUALLY MY CAR BEGAN TO SPEED UP ON ITS OWN! MY FOOT WAS NOT THE GAS AT THE TIME I LET IT FOR A SEC AND THAN IT WAS LIKE I SLAMMED ON THE GAS GOING INTO THE TURN ON THE RAMP IT SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME ITS THE FIRST SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPEN TO ME. IT SPED UP FROM 65 TO AROUND 68 AND THAN IT WAS OFF TO THE RACES SO I HIT GAS PEDAL AND THAN THE BREAKS AND IT STARTED TO SLOW DOWN I WAS AT THE TURN OF THE RAMP WITCH DIDNT HELP IT WAS REALLY BAD FOR A SECOND I WAS LIKE WHAT THE HELL AND WHEN I NOTICED I MADE SURE MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE GAS AND THAN IT ACCELERATED EVEN MORE!!!

I HAD BEEN DRIVING APP. 10 MINUTES IN SNOW COVERED ROAD CONDITIONS WHEN I WAS APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WITH TRAFFIC STOPPED FOR A RED LIGHT. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKE TO EASE INTO A STOP, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. I WAS IN THE CENTER LANE WITH STOPPED VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. I HAD TO EXERT HARD FORCE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO FINALLY BRING MY VEHICLE TO A STOP. THE ENGINE WAS AT LEAST OVER 4000RPMS ON THE TACHOMETER. WHEN TRAFFIC STARTED MOVING AGAIN, I EASED OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SLOWLY APPLIED GAS AND EASED OVER IN TO THE RIGHT(CURB) LANE. AFTER COMPLETING A 5 BLOCK DOWNHILL DRIVE IN SECOND GEAR WITH LITTLE USE OF EITHER THE ACCELERATOR OR THE BRAKE, I THEN BRAKED AS I TURNED INTO MY GARAGE IN ORDER TO PARK MY VEHICLE. AS I ENTERED MY GARAGE AND WHILE STILL BRAKING AND AT SLOWING SPEED THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD VIOLENTLY. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED HEAVY BRAKE PRESSURE AND UP SHIFTED IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE OUT OF GEAR. MY BRAKING MAY HAVE SLOWED, BUT DID NOT STOP, THE VEHICLE'S FORWARD ACCELERATION. WHEN I PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK, THE WHEELS LOCKED, FORWARD PROGRESS STOPPED (JUST IN FRONT OF THE BACK WALL OF MY GARAGE), AND I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF USING THE IGNITION SWITCH. I WAS STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT AT ABOUT 4:00 PM WITH MY FOOT FULLY ON THE BRAKE. WHILE WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO CHANGE, THE CAR WENT INTO A HIGH IDLE. I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL FIRMLY, BUT THE CAR WAS LURCHING, TRYING TO ACCELERATE. I PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND IT MADE A HORRIBLE NOISE. IT STAYED IN HIGH IDLE FOR SEVERAL MORE SECONDS, BUT THEN SEEMED TO KICK ITSELF OUT OF THAT IDLE. I THOUGHT THE CAR MAY HAVE DIED. THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, SO I GENTLY PUT IT INTO DRIVE (AGAIN THINKING THAT IT MAY HAVE DIED), BUT IT WAS STILL RUNNING, SO I DROVE ACROSS THE INTERSECTION, WENT TO A PARKING LOT, AND CALLED THE DEALER. THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID THAT I SHOULD HAVE THE CAR TOWED IN (AT MY EXPENSE), WHICH WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME. I CALLED THE TOYOTA 800 NUMBER AND THEY ALSO SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR ANY OF THE EXPENSES. THEY SAID THAT IF SOMETHING WAS FOUND WRONG WITH THE CAR, THEY WOULD REIMBURSE ME. I DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT NIGHT. THE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO KEEP THE CAR UNTIL THE REGIONAL MANAGER COULD COME, WHICH WOULD BE SEVERAL DAYS. THEY CALLED ME THE NEXT AFTERNOON TO SAY THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAD RUN ALL TESTS, AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR, AND THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE RAV 4 HAVING THIS ISSUE. THEY SAID THEY COULD KEEP THE CAR UNTIL THE REGIONAL MANAGER COULD COME, WHICH WAS NOW ESTIMATED TO BE 2-3 WEEKS. THEY SAID HE WOULD RUN THE EXACT SAME TESTS ON THE VEHICLE AS THEY HAD RUN. I WENT AND PICKED UP THE VEHICLE. I WENT INTO THE DEALERSHIP YESTERDAY AND MET WITH THE SERVICE AND SALES MANAGERS. THEY ADVISED ME THAT THOUGH THEY WERE NOT SAYING THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE ME ABOUT THE INCIDENT, THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, SO THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO, EXCEPT TO HELP ME GET OUT OF MY LEASE AND INTO ANOTHER TOYOTA VEHICLE. I WAS STOPPING FOR A RED LIGHT ON PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY IN SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA AT THE CORNER OF FIRST STREET WHEN I NOTICED IT WAS DIFFICULT TO APPLY THE BRAKE, AND THE CAR DID NOT APPEAR TO WANT TO STOP. I APPLIED THE BRAKE MORE FORCEFULLY AND WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO STOP IN THE LEFT HAND TURN LANE, HOWEVER THE CAR KEPT LURCHING FORWARD AS IF IT WANTED TO BREAK FREE OF THE BRAKE. HAVING HEARD THE WIDESPREAD PUBLICITY REGARDING THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM IN TOYOTA VEHICLES, AND HAVING PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM ON ONE OCCASION OVER A YEAR EARLIER, I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE THE ISSUE. I PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY REVVED UP TO AN ALARMING RATE. I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION IN PANIC BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO LOOK AT THE TACHOMETER. HOWEVER, JUDGING BY THE SOUND AND LATER EXPERIMENTATION WITH REVVING WHILE PARKED, I BELIEVE THE RPM MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE 4000-5000 RANGE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I WAS PARTICULARLY SHAKEN BY THIS EVENT BECAUSE I HAD ALREADY HAD THE RECALL SERVICE PERFORMED THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY INTENDED TO ADDRESS THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE. THIS RECALL SERVICE WAS PERFORMED MAY 10, 2011 AT DESERT TOYOTA IN TUCSON, ARIZONA. I HAD EXPERIENCE THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE ONCE BEFORE, BUT IT WAS NOT NEARLY AS DRAMATIC. I DO NOT RECALL THE DETAILS, BUT IT WAS IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA IN EARLY 2011 AND MY MEMORY IS THAT TAPPING THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS RESTORED THE CAR'S OPERATION TO NORMAL FAIRLY QUICKLY. WITH THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED, THE ENGINE REVED IMMEDIATELY TO AROUND 6000 RPM WHEN STARTED. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE WITHOUT SHIFTING OUT OF PARK, GOT OUT OF THE CAR, AND VISUALLY CHECKED THE FLOORMAT. IT WAS NOT TOUCHING THE THROTTLE PEDAL AND THE THROTTLE PEDAL DID NOT APPEAR TO BE DEPRESSED. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 1 MINUTE I STARTED THE ENGINE A SECOND TIME AND THE SAME THING OCCURRED. I THEN WAITED APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES, PUMPED THE THROTTLE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES, THEN STARTED THE VEHICLE A THIRD TIME. THIS TIME THE VEHICLE STARTED NORMALLY (ENGINE IDLING). I THEN DROVE HOME WITHOUT FURTHER REVING ISSUES AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY REOCCURENCE SINCE THE INCIDENT DATE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE THE NEXT DAY AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A FLOORMAT ISSUE, AND MY DRIVERSIDE FLOORMAT WAS REMOVED BY THE DEALERSHIP. I DISAGREE WITH THIS ASSESSMENT. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT BEFORE I HAD THE REVING ISSUE UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, MY LAST INTERACTION WITH THE VEHICLE WAS TO HAVE MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE GAS PEDAL AS I WAS STEERING THE CAR INTO A PARKING SPACE, WHEN I WAS USING ONLY THE BRAKE PEDAL TO MODERATE MY SPEED, WITH NO THROTTLE PEDAL PRESSURE BEING APPLIED BY ME, AND WITH THE ENGINE IDLING, AS IS NORMAL. DO NOT SEE HOW THIS COULD BE A RESIDUAL STUCK THROTTLE PEDAL ISSUE WHEN I RETURNED TO MY AUTOMOBLE AND STARTED THE ENGINE TO DRIVE AWAY. ON A PUBLIC MAIN STREET TRAVELING 35-45 MPH, STARTED TO BRAKE TO STOP FOR A LIGHT CHANGING FROM YELLOW TO RED. AS THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV TO 5000 RPM. THE BRAKES WERE HOLDING BACK THE CAR, BUT THE ACCELERATION WAS PERSISTENT. THE CAR BARELY STOPPED BEFORE ENTERING THE INTERSECTION, BUT THE ENGINE REMAINED AT WHAT APPEARED TO BE FULL THROTTLE. I SHIFTED THE STOPPED VEHICLE INTO PARK ON THIS AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE/TRANSAXLE MADE A SIGNIFICANT "BANG" AS IT WAS SHIFTED, THE ENGINE STOPPED REVVING AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SHOT BACK TOWARD MY LEG HITTING MY ANKLE. AT NO TIME DID MY RIGHT FOOT LEAVE THE BRAKE PEDAL. IN FACT, I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE WITH ALL MY STRENGTH TO COMPLETE THE STOP. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED BY FAMILY MEMBERS. IT WAS MY FIRST DIRECT EXPERIENCE WITH IT AND THE VEHICLE IS JUST OVER A YEAR OLD. IT HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALER FOR THIS REASON AND RECEIVED A RECALL UPGRADE SEVERAL MONTHS AGO DURING A ROUTINE FREE MAINTENANCE VISIT. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA DIRECTLY TO TERMINATE MY LEASE ON THIS AND ANOTHER EXACT SAME MAKE/MODEL/YEAR LEASED THE SAME DAY. I FEEL THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT FIXED THE ISSUES FROM 2010 AND THAT ADJUSTMENTS TO THE FLOOR MATS AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARE NOT ADDRESSING WHAT IS REALLY WRONG. MY 2010 TOYOTA RAV4 WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES. THE CAR SLOWLY BEGAN ACCELERATING DESPITE NORMAL PRESSURE BEING APPLIED TO THE BRAKES, AND THEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE BEGAN REVVING LOUDLY AND THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE MORE QUICKLY. THE CAR ACCELERATED TO PERHAPS A FEW MILES AN HOUR INTO THE INTERSECTION BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO STOP IT BY APPLYING HEAVY PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES AND ALSO APPLYING THE PARKING BRAKE. AFTER I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV INCREASINGLY LOUDLY FOR SEVERAL MORE SECONDS (WITH OBVIOUS POWER THAT I COULD EASILY FEEL TRYING TO OVERCOME THE BRAKES I WAS APPLYING) UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE INCIDENT DID NOT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. BEING IN A BUSY AND DANGEROUS INTERSECTION, I DECIDED TO RESTART THE CAR AND DRIVE IT WITH EXTREME CAUTION TO A SAFE AREA TO PARK. WHEN RESTARTED, THE CAR OPERATED NORMALLY AND PRESENTED NO FURTHER PROBLEMS. THE CAR'S AIR CONDITIONING AND SATELLITE RADIO WERE OPERATING AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE CLEAR AND SUNNY, AND THE ROADS WERE DRY. THE CAR DOES HAVE A RUBBER ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MAT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, WHICH WAS SECURED BY HOOKS INSTALLED BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR. THE EDGE OF THE FLOOR MAT IS SEVERAL INCHES AWAY FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHEN IT IS FULLY DEPRESSED, AND THE MAT ITSELF WILL NOT PHYSICALLY MOVE OR SLIDE EVEN WHEN PURPOSEFULLY TRYING TO MOVE IT WITH FORCE. I'M ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THAT IT DID NOT MOVE OR OTHERWISE INTERFERE WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THIS IS THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. AFTER THE INCIDENT, I DROVE THE CAR WITH EXTREME CARE TO MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP (AND EXPERIENCED NO FURTHER PROBLEMS), WHERE IT IS NOW BEING HELD FOR INSPECTION. THE CAR'S MILEAGE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT WAS APPROXIMATELY 6,200 MILES. IT WAS ALSO SERVICED BY TOYOTA SEVERAL MONTHS AGO IN RESPONSE TO THE RECALL RELATING TO UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. *TR

I BOUGHT THE 2010 TOYOTA RAV4 THIS JULY. THE CAR WAS FINE UNTIL TODAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2010. TODAY AT 11:45 AM, I WAS BRAKING AS I APPROACHED THE RED LIGHT GOING AT 25MPH. WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I PRESSED THE BRAKE EVEN HARDER, THE CAR JUMPED THE LIGHT, AND EVEN THOUGH THE CAR DID SLOWED, I HAD TO SLAM IN ORDER TO COME TO A COMPLETE HALT. I THEN PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE. ON SEPTEMBER 1 I WAS DRIVING IN A CONGESTED AREA APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WITH STOPPED TRAFFIC. AS I WAS APPLYING MY BRAKES I SUDDENLY FELT MY 2010 TOYOTA RAV4 LURCH FORWARD - AT FIRST I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND, BUT A QUICK GLANCE IN MY REARVIEW MIRROR INDICATED THE CAR BEHIND ME WAS STILL AT A SAFE DISTANCE. I QUICKLY TURNED OFF MY RADIO TO HEAR MY ENGINE ROARING AS I WAS CONTINUING TO APPLY THE BRAKES. I THEN PUT THE RAV4 IN NEUTRAL WHILE THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO ROAR. ONCE IN NEUTRAL, THE RAV4 CAME TO A STOP. I THEN DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR SEVERAL TIMES AND THE ENGINE SETTLED DOWN. AS I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION I WAS TRAVELING AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES THE RAV 4 WAS SLOWLY COMING TO A STOP UNTIL I FELT THE CAR LURCH FORWARD. ONCE I BEGAN APPLYING THE BRAKES I DID NOT TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL, NOR DID I APPLY ANY PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR. IN ADDITION, MY CARPET MAT WAS SEVERAL INCHES AWAY FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AT ALL TIMES. AFTER THE CONTACT WAS STRUCK, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ABNORMALLY ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE DESPITE HIS ATTEMPTS IN ABRUPTLY APPLYING THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE DROVE OVER SEVERAL CURBS AND PROCEEDED TO ACCELERATE UP A HILL. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE BUT COULD NOT BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP UNTIL ALL FOUR TIRES WERE FLAT. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. AT APPROXIMATELY 5:00 PM ON JULY 19TH, 2010, OUR TOYOTA RAV 4 (MODEL YEAR 2010 MILEAGE 6450) EXPERIENCED AN INCIDENT OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. DRIVING HOME WITH 4 MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY, WE APPROACHED AN INTERSECTION AND THE DRIVER BEGAN TO APPLY THE BRAKE. THE ROADWAY WAS CROWDED, SO OUR SPEED WAS FORTUNATELY MINIMAL (APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH). WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY BEGAN TO REV AT A HIGH RATE, THE DRIVER SAID THE CAR WAS NOT RESPONDING WELL TO THE BRAKE AND WE MAY NOT STOP IN TIME AS WE APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION. INSTINCTIVELY, I LOOKED AT THE DRIVER'S FOOT TO SEE IF THERE WAS SOME PROBLEM WITH HIM HITTING THE GAS PEDAL, BUT COULD CLEARLY SEE BOTH FEET AND ONLY THE BRAKE BEING APPLIED. THE DRIVER PUMPED THE BRAKE, LIFTING HIS FOOT FROM THE BRAKE AND REAPPLYING; WE JOLTED FORWARD HE LIFTED HIS FOOT FROM THE BRAKE OF THE REVVING CAR AND THEN REAPPLIED THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SLOWED AND RETURNED TO A NORMAL IDLE AND WE WERE ABLE TO STOP WITHOUT HITTING ANYONE. WE DID NOT FILE A POLICE REPORT, BUT CONTACTED THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING MORNING AND WERE INSTRUCTED TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR INSPECTION THE FOLLOWING DAY. NOT SURPRISINGLY, AS THEY APPEAR INCAPABLE OF DETECTING THE PROBLEM WITH THEIR DIAGNOSTICS, NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND AND WE WERE ASKED TO RECLAIM THE CAR A FEW DAYS LATER. WE TOLD THE DEALERSHIP THAT WE CONSIDER THIS LEASED CAR TO BE UNSAFE AND DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE CAR AND WISHED TO RETURN IT AS IT IS CLEARLY DEFECTIVE. 4 MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY WITNESSED THE EVENT AND NO ONE IS GETTING IN THE CAR AGAIN. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP'S CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THEY ARE ONLY DEALER, THEY ARE NOT THE MANUFACTURERS AND WE HAD TO ADDRESS ANY CONCERNS REGARDING A RETURN TO THE MANUFACTURER, IN THEIR OPINION IT CHECKED OUT FINE. THE CAR HAD ALREADY BEEN SERVICED BY THE DEALER SEVERAL MONTHS PRIOR, TO ADDRESS THE RAV 4 RECALL FOR THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM. CLEARLY IN OUR CASE THEIR FIX DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR

AFTER HAVING HAD TWO EVENTS OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN AN 2007 TOYOTA RAV4, THE DEALER, METRO TOYOTA, TALKED US UNTO TRADING IN THE 2007, FOR A BRAND NEW 2010 RAV4, AFTER ASSURING US THAT THERE WERE NO SIMILAR COMPLAINTS WITH THE 2010 MODEL. WE DROVE THIS CAR FOR ABOUT 230 MILES, WHEN ON JUNE 20 ,2010, A MILE AFTER EXITING THE FREEWAY, WITH MY WIFE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, I WAS COMING UP TO A RED LIGHT,GOING DOWN A SLIGHT SLOPE,ON THE ROAD,WHEN THE CAR ENGINE SURGED. I PUT THE GEAR IN NEUTRAL, DROVE THE CAR PARALLER AND NEAR SOMEBODY'E DRIVEWAY, PUT THE CAR IN PARK, AND WAS PREPARING TO GO KNOCK ON THE DOOR OF THE HOMEOWNER TO ASK HIM/HER TO COME AND WITNESS THE,RPMS, WHEN THE CAR SURGING STOPPED. I CAREFULLY DROVE THE CAR HOME. I DID NOT CALL THE DEALER THAT EVENING. THE NEXT DAY, I WAS GOING TO A NEARBY GROCERY, PREPARING TO GET INTO A LEFT TURNING LANE, APPROACHING A RED LIGHT, AGAIN GOING DOWN A SLIGHT INCLINE ON THE ROAD, MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, WHEN I FELT THE ENGINE REV UP STRONGLY. I PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKE, PUT THE GEAR IN NEUTRAL, LIFTED UP THE HAND BRAKE, AND A GOT OUT OF THE CAR FOR A WHILE HOPING TO SPOT A POLICE CAR OR HAVE SOMEONE ELSE COME AND WITNESS THIS TERRIBLE EVENT. SEEING NO ONE WILLING TO STOP, I GOT BACK IN THE CAR, AGAIN PRESSED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, BUT THE RPMS REMAINED ABOVE 5000. AFTER WAITING ONE MORE MINUTE, THE SPEED OF THE ENGINE CAME DOWN TO NORMAL, I PICKED UP THE REQUIRED ITEMS AT THE GROCERY STORE, AND RETURNED TO MY HOME NEARBY. I CALLED THE DEALER, THEY SENT A MAN WHO TOOK THE CAR TO SERVICE. THE CAR WAS THERE FOR OVER THREE WEEKS. THEIR ANSWER WAS THAT THE CAR CHECKED OK, THEY ATTEMPTED NO REPAIR. I REFUSED TO AGAIN DRIVE THIS CAR ON THE ROAD. I ENDED UP BUYING A SIMILAR CAR OF ANOTHER MAKE. THIS AND THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT IN THE 2007 RAV 4 HAS COST US OVER 13,000 DOLLARS . *TR

ON SUNDAY, JUNE 27 2010, WE WERE TRAVELING DOWN A CROWDED CANYON IN OUR 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. (WE PREVIOUSLY BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN TO OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP PURSUANT TO THE SAFETY RECALL.) MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING WHILE I WAS SEATED BESIDE OUR TODDLER IN THE BACK SEAT. ALL OF A SUDDEN IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMEBODY FLOORED THE ACCELERATOR. MY HUSBAND BECAME ALARMED AS HE NOTICED THE RPMS IMMEDIATELY RAMPED UP. WE LURCHED FORWARD. MY HUSBAND'S FOOT WAS NOT EVEN ON THE ACCELERATOR. FORTUNATELY, SINCE MY HUSBAND WAS ABOUT TO BRAKE, WE WERE ABLE TO NARROWLY AVOID A COLLISION WITH THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF US. WE CONTACTED OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO INSPECT THE NEW TOYOTA. THEY COULDN'T IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT, BUT THEY DID INDICATE THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN A FLOOR MAT PROBLEM. WE EXPLAINED THAT THE ACCELERATOR DID NOT SEEM STUCK AND THAT WE WERE TRAVELING AT AN EXTREMELY SLOW RATE OF SPEED AND THEN UNINTENTIONALLY ACCELERATED. WE CONTINUED TO BE CONCERNED AND SO WE CONTACTED TOYOTA. THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE DEVICE INSTALLED PURSUANT TO THE SAFETY RECALL WAS INTENDED TO ASSIST THE ACCELERATOR IN RETURNING TO AN IDLE POSITION. HOWEVER, AS WE EXPLAINED, THE ACCELERATOR WAS IN AN IDLE POSITION WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED. WE CONTINUE TO BE SCARED TO DEATH TO DRIVE OUR NEW TOYOTA RAV4. I AM SURPRISED I DID NOT REAR END THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I DROVE CAREFULLY TO THE ROCHESTER TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, JUST MINUTES AWAY. I SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER. THIS VEHICLE IS ONE INVOLVED IN THE CURRENT TOYOTA RECALL. I HAD THE ACCELERATOR REPAIR MADE ON MARCH 5, 2010. I HAD NOT EXPERIENCED ANY ACCELERATOR PROBLEM BEFORE TODAY. I EXPLAINED TO THE MANAGER MY CONCERN THAT THE TRUE PROBLEM WITH UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED, THUS MY PROBLEM OCCURRED DESPITE THE PRIOR REPLACEMENT OF MY PEDAL. AS PER DEALER, THEY DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR AND WHEN I ASKED THEM CAN THEY TELL ME IF THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE THEY TOLD ME THAT TOYOTA CAN NOT MAKE THOSE GUARANTEES. HE PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND THAT DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING. THE DRIVER TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN BACK ON AND IT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN AGAIN. THE DRIVER THEN TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND ON AGAIN AND IT BEGAN TO DRIVE NORMAL. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 1,786.

TL* WHILE TEST DRIVING A 2010 TOYOTA RAV 4, IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT, THE ENGINE BEGAN REVVING AT A RAPID PACE. HE THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE TO RESUME NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER, IN WHICH HE NOTIFIED THE SALES MANAGER OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
